THE SERIES Tonight the Penguins host the New York Rangers for the first time this season. Pittsburgh has played twice in New York already this campaign, winning 6-3 on Jan. 20 and 3-0 on Jan. 31; the season series will end with a home-and-home set April 3 in New York and April 5 here. . . The Penguins have won six consecutive games against New York since a 3-1 loss here to the Rangers on Jan. 6, 2012, outscoring New York, 25-8, during this streak. Pittsburgh’s longest winning streak against New York is seven, accomplished from Jan. 18, 2009 through Jan. 25, 2010 — a streak snapped with a 3-2 home overtime loss on Feb. 12, 2010. . . Pittsburgh is 16-5-2 in its last 23 regular-season games against the Rangers, limiting the Blueshirts to two or fewer goals in 11 of those 23. . . The Penguins know something about earning early leads against the Rangers, as they’ve scored the first goal in eight consecutive games against them and 11 of the last 13. . . The Rangers have won five of the last seven games between these teams that were decided in overtime. Nine of the last 11 games between the teams decided in overtime were played here in Pittsburgh. . . The Penguins have won each of their past two home games against New York after dropping the previous five (0-3-2). Pittsburgh has points in 18 of its last 21 home games continued on page 8

against New York (14-3-4). . . Pittsburgh has been held to two or fewer goals in six of its last seven home games against New York, the only exception coming in the last game played here on April 5 last season. Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin each had one goal and one assist in a 5-3 victory that night. . . Letang has points in each of his last six games against New York (2+6), while Pascal Dupuis has points in five straight against the Rangers (2+3). . . Neal has three goals this season against New York. . . Pittsburgh is just 1-for-19 on the power play in its last six home games against the Rangers, although it has managed only three power-play chances in its last two home games against them. . . Pittsburgh is 111-109-23-8 all-time against the Rangers, including a 58-48-14-4 mark at home.
THE PENGUINS Sidney Crosby has points in 16 consecutive games against New York (10+19) since being blanked here against the Rangers on Jan. 18, 2009. Each of his last 11 points in that streak have come via assists, as he has gone nine consecutive games without a goal against them. His last goal against New York came on Feb. 12, 2010, when he scored twice. . . Since being blanked in his first home game against the Rangers on Nov. 12, 2005, Crosby has points in 18 of 19 home games he’s played against them (13+23). . . Evgeni Malkin missed the Penguins’ 6-1 home victory over the New York Islanders last Sunday with an upper-body injury suffered March 8 in Toronto, a game the Penguins won in a shootout, 5-4. Malkin was expected to miss one to two weeks. . . When Chris Kunitz had two goals and three points in a 5-4 win in Philadelphia on March 7, it left him tied for third in NHL scoring and with a goal in five straight games — the longest such streak of his career — along with points in a careerbest seven straight games.

He was kept off the scoresheet in the win over the Maple Leafs, then recorded the first five-point game of his career and his fourth career hat trick with the Penguins in the win over the Islanders . . . Crosby had five assists, matching a career high, in the win over the Islanders as his line with Kunitz and Dupuis accounted for 12 points. . . Pittsburgh will host Boston tomorrow afternoon and then host Washington on Tuesday before facing the Islanders on the road next Friday.
Going into this week, the Rangers’ Brad Richards was one of just 15 active players averaging a point-per-game or better against the Penguins in their career. He has eight goals and 36 points in 35 games against Pittsburgh. . . This game closes a four-game road trip for the Rangers, who played in Winnipeg on Thursday night. New York began the trip with a 4-1 victory in Washington last Sunday and then faced Buffalo on Tuesday night. . . The Rangers will return home to host Carolina on Monday. . . New York defenseman Marc Staal, brother of former Penguin Jordan Staal, is out indefinitely after being struck in the eye with a deflected puck last week. He is expected to make a full recovery. . . New York had won four straight games before falling at home to Ottawa, 3-2, on March 8, but responded with the win over the Capitals, in which Brian Boyle scored his first goal of the season.

The First Ever ES Hybrid. 40 MPG EPA-Estimated.* At first glance, it’s a bold statement of style. Read between the lines, however, and you’ll discover that the first ever ES Hybrid doesn’t merely make a statement, it backs it up. Take, for instance, the sleek, sculpted appearance. It’s not just for show—the aerodynamic design boosts fuel efficiency up to an EPA-estimated 40 MPG.* And while the hand-stitched panels and precision-crafted interior make a stunning first impression, the available next-generation technologies in connectivity elevate the conversation. Ultimately, the 2013 ES Hybrid not only sends a message—it’s sure to build a following.

PLAYERS SERVE GUESTS AT SKATES & PLATES CHARITY GALA
By: Wes Crosby
It’s customary for the Penguins to serve wicked wrist shots, pinpoint passes and earth-shattering body checks against opposing players. But the players traded in their sweaters and sticks for tuxedos and bowties on March 5 to serve dinner at the team’s annual Skates & Plates Charity Gala presented by Trib Total Media at CONSOL Energy Center. The gala benefitted the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, the Mario Lemieux Foundation and the Western Pennsylvania chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Since its inception in 1986, the event has raised over $5.75 million for local children’s

charities that focus on medical research. “It’s something that as players, we really enjoy doing,” first-time server Tanner Glass said. “Giving back is a big part of our life away from the game, so events like this are really important.” Penguins general manager Ray Shero said he considers the gala the team’s “best event” and said the players enjoy it just as much as the guests. “It gives our players the chance to mingle with our fans,” Shero said. “They have a great time, they’re interacting with everybody. So it’s a great night for them. They’re serving people and collecting tips for great causes.” The players, wearing long-tailed tuxedos with white vests and bowties, were each responsible for a table or two where they served salads, entrees and beverages. They competed to earn the most tips of the evening, which are collected for the event charities. Bragging rights for the highest tips were captured by defenseman Robert Bortuzzo, with a close second place finish by forward Pascal Dupuis. While coach Dan Bylsma cracked a few jokes during his pre-meal speech, he also drove home how unique this event is to the local community. “What other place could you have visited last night and watched Evgeni Malkin score a miraculous goal; then, the next night you have Evgeni serve you wine, tell you jokes, flash his smile and show his personality while serving dinner?” Bylsma asked. A unique experience indeed.

AROUND THE NHL By Mike Prisuta
IT WORKED BEFORE: Buffalo’s 6-10-1 start cost head coach Lindy Ruff his job and necessitated a rare in-season change behind the bench. The Sabres hadn’t made such a move since Dec. 11, 1991, when John Muckler replaced Rick Dudley after the Sabres had won just nine of their first 28 games (9-15-4). Muckler directed Buffalo to a 22-22-8 record the rest of the way in 1991-92 and the Sabres qualified for the playoffs. HOME SWEET HOME: Anaheim’s 10-1-0 start at home was the best in franchise history. The Ducks’ 10-game winning streak at home heading into Sunday night’s hosting of St. Louis was the longest in the NHL this season. At 17-3-3 overall the Ducks were also off to the best start in franchise history, bettering their 15-2-6 start in 2006-07.
THIRD-PERIOD MAGIC: The first eight goals scored by the Rangers’ Rick Nash this season were scored in third periods. That made Nash the second player in NHL history to have scored his first eight goals in a season in such a fashion. Rangers teammate Arron Asham had done so with the Islanders in 2003-04. ZERO TOLERANCE: The Capitals’ Braden Holtby registered Rick Nash his third shutout of the season on March 2, a 3-0 blanking of Winnipeg. That was at least one more shutout than Washington’s team leader had in that department in 23 of the Capitals’ 37 previous seasons.
LATE-GAME HEROICS: Magnus Paajarvi led Edmonton with two game-winning goals through the Oilers’ first 24 games. Both were scored with less than 3:50 remaining in regulation. 24

FLOODGATES ARE OPEN: Giving up goals in bunches has been a problem at times in Philadelphia this season. The Flyers surrendered four goals in 14:48 during a 5-4 loss to the Penguins on March 7, and then followed that up by coughing up three goals to the Bruins in 2:18 during a 3-0 loss to Boston on March 9.

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN
Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 14th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including six straight playoff appearances and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. The Penguins entered the 2012-13 season having sold out 254 straight games while setting new standards for local television ratings, merchandise sales, website traffic and social media. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open CONSOL Energy Center in August, 2010. The sparkling facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America and hosted such national events as the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Second and Third Rounds and the 2012 NHL Draft. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. An immaculately gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranks eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. The Penguins ownership group, local labor organizations and members of the Pittsburgh business community honored Lemieux in 2012 with a statue to commemorate his career and contributions to the city and the region. Appropriately named “Le Magnifique,” the statue, by nationally-acclaimed sculptor Bruce Wolfe, can be seen outside of the Trib Total Media gate at CONSOL Energy Center. Mario and his wife, Nathalie, and their four children live in Sewickley.

RON BURKLE CO-OWNER
Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 14th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh — including the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four, coming in April, 2013. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for five-plus seasons and consistently rank among the most fan-friendly and community-minded teams in the NHL and all of pro sports. The Penguins reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009 and won the Cup in ‘09. The team’s solid foundation of ownership has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign many of the team’s young core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year — leading to six straight playoff berths. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award.

DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT
David Morehouse has established himself as one of the most dynamic senior executives in the National Hockey League. Since being named President of the Penguins in April, 2007, Morehouse has reshaped the team’s image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010, and oversees every aspect of the Penguins’ operations, reporting directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. Under Morehouse’s leadership, the Penguins quickly developed a new commitment to innovative fan outreach — including an annual event where players personally deliver season tickets to fans’ homes and a special preseason game where all 18,000 tickets are distributed free to local youth. His emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.-based NHL and NBA teams in local television ratings during the 2011-12 season. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins led all U.S.-based NHL teams in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales. Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of Morehouse’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids aged 5-7 each year. The Penguins have sold out every game for five-plus seasons, a streak that had reached 254 games before the start of the 2012-13 season. They also have sold out all suites for four-plus seasons and actually increased capacity at CONSOL Energy Center by 300 seats (to 18,387) after the arena’s inaugural season in 2010-11. Morehouse himself was named 2011 CEO Communicator of the Year by the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. Morehouse attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Vanessa, have four children and live in Sewickley Heights.

Shero, 50, who is in his seventh season as Pittsburgh’s GM, has transformed a franchise that missed the playoffs from 2002-06 into a perennial championship contender, including two Stanley Cup Final appearances and a Cup title in 2009. Shero, who was named general manager of the Penguins in May, 2006, arrived in Pittsburgh with a firm, forward-thinking managerial style that incorporates cutting-edge methods of technology, player relations, prospect development and salary cap management. Shero’s efforts have secured the Penguins’ long-term stability and competitiveness with his masterful maneuvering of the salary cap — the Penguins ranked No. 3 out of 122 pro sports franchises in spending efficiency according to Bloomberg Business Week — and multi-year signings of the team’s core players: Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Brooks Orpik, Kris Letang, and James Neal. Shero’s riskiest and boldest move paid off with hockey’s highest prize. With the Penguins needing a jolt of life late in the 2008-09 season, he promoted Wilkes-Barre/Scranton head coach Dan Bylsma to Pittsburgh. Bylsma led a turnaround that resulted in a championship in ’09. Bylsma also won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s “Most Outstanding Coach” in ’11. Shero cut his administrative teeth during 14 seasons as an assistant general manager with the Nashville Predators (1998-06) and Ottawa Senators (1993-98). Shero, a native of St. Paul, Minn., was raised in a hockey family filled with tradition. His father, Fred Shero, played for the NY Rangers (1947-50) and coached the Philadelphia Flyers for seven seasons. Fred won back-to-back Stanley Cups as head coach of the Flyers in 1974 and ’75 and also served as general manager of the Rangers for three years (1978-80), leading the club to the Stanley Cup Final in 1979. The Sheros are one of the few father-son tandems to have their names on the Cup. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. He twice led the team in scoring and was named team captain on two occasions. He graduated in 1984 as one of the top-10 scorers in school history. Shero, who was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1982 NHL Draft, spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. Shero is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.

JASON BOTTERILL ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER
Jason Botterill is in his fourth full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position in May, 2009, by GM Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockey-related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top minor-league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 36, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins; his responsibilities included salary cap management, professional and amateur scouting and overseeing prospect development. Botterill’s avant-garde approach and understanding of the salary cap has been a major asset for the Penguins. Before joining the Pittsburgh organization, he worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars. Botterill, a native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, was a firstround draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in the 1994 NHL Draft and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo. He also played 393 career games in the AHL and IHL, recording 127 goals and 257 points. Following his playing career, he returned to the University of Michigan to earn his MBA. Jason and his wife, Andrea, and their daughter, Alisa, reside in Pittsburgh.

In 2008-09, Bylsma penned Dan Bylsma earned one of the most remarkable starts the 2011 Jack to a head coaching career in NHL history. RULES OF THE GAME PRESENTED BY
BOARDING
BOARDING To check or push a defenseless opponent in such a manner that causes the opponent to hit or impact into the boards dangerously or violently.
T:8.5”
B:8.75”
S:8.5”
-
The player applying the check needs to ensure his opponent is not in a defenseless position and if so, must avoid contact.
-
The player with the puck needs to avoid placing himself in a dangerous and defenseless position.
-
Any unnecessary contact with a player playing the puck on an obvious “icing” or “off-sides” play that does not impact boards should be treated as “charging.”
DELAY OF GAME A player may be penalized when, in the opinion of the Referee, is delaying the game in any matter. (Normally six conditions) 1.) Player or goaltender intentionally shoots or throws the puck out
of the playing area.
2.) A defensive player or goaltender in the defensive zone shoots the
puck directly (without being deflected) over the glass.
3.) A player or goaltender intentionally knocks the net’s goalpost off
its moorings, which stops the play.
4.) The goaltender plays the puck out of the trapezoid behind the net. 5.) The goaltender freezes the puck rather than passing it to a team-
mate when no player on the opposing team is within sufficient distance to apply offensive pressure.
6.) Any skater other than the goaltender who uses their hands to
make the puck unplayable.

INTERFERENCE INTERFERENCE
BODY POSITION: Body position will be determined as the player skating in front of or beside his opponent, traveling in the same direction. - A player who is behind an opponent, who does not have the puck, may not use his stick, body or free hand in order to restrain his opponent. POSSESSION OF THE PUCK: The last player to touch the puck, other than the goaltenders, will be considered the player in possession. RESTRAIN: The actions of a player or goaltender who does not have body position, but instead uses illegal means to impede an opponent who is not in possession of the puck. PICK: The action of a player or goaltender who checks an opponent who is not in possession of the puck and is unaware of the impending check/hit. FREE HAND: When a free hand is used to hold, pull, tug, grab or physically restrain an opponent from moving freely, this must be penalized as holding.
STICK: A player who does not have body position on his opponent, who used his stick to impede or prevent his opponent from moving freely on the ice shall be assessed a hooking penalty.
OFF-SIDES Players of the attacking team must not precede the puck into the attacking zone. (Two determining factors) 1.) One of a player’s skates is not in contact with or behind the blue
line of the attacking zone before the puck enters that zone.
2.) The puck must completely cross the edge of the blue line nearest
the attacking zone to be considered inside the attacking zone.
The act of using the stick in a manner that enables a player to restrain an opponent.
-
When a player is checking another in such a way that there is only stick-tostick contact, such action is not to be penalized as hooking.

GET A BEHIND THE SCENES LOOK AT THE ARENA
Tickets for CONSOL Energy Center’s tours draw visitors of all ages and interests who want to see more of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ home and the city’s newest, greenest entertainment facility. CONSOL Energy Center tours, presented by Bayer MaterialScience, walk visitors through areas of the building that fans might not get to see when they attend a game or other entertainment. For example, on the PNC Legends Level more than $1 million worth of artwork, done in collaboration with James Gallery of Pittsburgh, is on display. It includes large wall murals, 10 PNC Legendary Moments shadowboxes and photography featuring Pittsburgh Penguins players. Tours provide guests with an exclusive look at all seating levels of CONSOL Energy Center, as well as the First Niagara, Captain Morgan and Lexus clubs, a Canadian Party Suite, select locker rooms and more. Based on events taking place in the building, Suite 66 and the Visitor’s Hockey Locker Room are shown when available. These areas are of interest to many people but not ordinarily accessible to most visitors. One of the other features included in the tours is the centerpiece PensVision, measuring nearly 25’ wide and 15’ high and 70,000 pounds. With true High Definition resolution along with enhanced contrast and brightness, the screens redefine the arena video experience for Penguins fans. Just below the center-ice scoreboard there are two, 360 degree LED ribbon boards. These are a first of their kind in Pittsburgh. The scoreboard and LED ribbon boards combined cost a total of $8 million. Throughout CONSOL Energy Center there are over 800 flat-screen TVs. They are used to display messages to fans, keep fans in the game while away from

their seats along with displaying the menus at the concession stands throughout the arena. On the FedEx Level, just above the American Eagle Gate, sits the World’s Largest Goalie Mask. The idea of James Gallery, it was painted by renowned artist David Arrigo, who has painted masks for several NHL goaltenders. The display is presented by Bayer MaterialScience and features “The Science of Sport” kiosks showcasing the science behind sports including how a hockey puck moves on ice. The Goalie mask, which is 9.5 feet high by 8 feet wide by 12 feet deep and weighs in between 700-800 lbs, features the celebration of fans and players after a goal is scored. The materials used to construct the mask are protected by a high-performance polyurethane coating containing raw materials produced by Bayer MaterialScience. This basecoat serves as the foundation for both the white background and the artist’s colors. A final polyurethane clearcoat over the artwork provides additional protection and durability. Also part of the tour is the Highmark Kid’s Zone — an interactive play area that offers both educational and recreational activities for children of all ages. The Highmark Kid’s Zone includes four Wii consoles, videos and trivia, faceoff and puck games, along with a replica of the famous Sidney Crosby dryer. Located further down the hall is the Highmark Wall of Champions. The Highmark Wall of Champions is two stories tall and contains the official jerseys of all PIHL (Pittsburgh Interscholastic Hockey League) teams, regional high schools as well as select other amateur teams in the region. “The tour highlights the environmentally friendly components of the building which qualified CONSOL Energy Center to become the first NHL Arena to receive LEED Gold Certification,” says David Peart, Vice President, Pittsburgh Penguins. “The tours allow us to highlight our continuing efforts toward improving the environment, which are detailed on 12 different plaques located throughout the building,” says Mr. Peart. PITTSBURGH PENGUINS FOUNDATION
HEADS UP PITTSBURGH
KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE
In 2012, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation expanded the HEADS UP Pittsburgh free baseline concussion testing program to include youth athletes ages 10-14 in all sports. Since the program started in 2011, over 3,400 youth hockey players have been tested along with 1,500 athletes representing 12 other sports. The program originally began with youth hockey players only. Testing took place at UPMC Sports Medicine on the South Side, as well as at four Community College of Allegheny County locations — Boyce, North, South and West Hills Center. “Our original youth hockey testing program in 2011 was a tremendous success because it touched thousands of young players and created increased awareness about concussion safety,” said Dave Soltesz, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. “Based on our mission to actively promote physical well being among young people in the community, it was an easy decision to expand the program to other sports beyond hockey.” While athletes are being tested, their parents meet with UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program staff to learn about “HEADS UP Pittsburgh.” Certified athletic trainers from the UPMC Sports Concussion Program supervise the program and testing. Introduced in the mid 1990’s, the American Eagle Student Rush Program is one of the most popular and well known marketing initiatives of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Designed to sell remaining game-day inventory, the American Eagle Student Rush program provides the Pittsburgh Penguins an opportunity to introduce new fans to the game of hockey at a discounted rate. Based upon the positive feedback the organization has received from current season ticket holders who were one-time Student Rush participants, the program has been successful in developing a long-term relationship with young, active Pittsburghers. During the 2012-13 season, at least 200 American Eagle Student Rush tickets will be made available for each regular season home game at CONSOL Energy Center. To avoid long waits outside during the winter months, the organization will host online pre-sales for most games. To receive pre-sale information, students can text RUSH to 32623 to register for the American Eagle Student Rush Mobile Club. Each pregame text includes the opportunity to win two free tickets to the next home game! In addition to the 200 tickets offered each game, several special Student Rush nights will be held. At least 500 student rush tickets will be available for these select games at the American Eagle Gate. Music, prizes and giveaways will also be provided courtesy of American Eagle Outfitters. EATON GOES BACK TO THE FUTURE
By: Sam Kasan
“IT FEELS GREAT. IT’S A GREAT ORGANIZATION, FIRST CLASS. TO BE BACK TO SEE ALL THE FAMILIAR FACES AND BE A PART OF A WINNING TEAM, I’M EXCITED TO BE BACK.” ~ Mark Eaton
The Penguins are going “Back to the Future” with defenseman Mark Eaton playing the role of Marty McFly. Pittsburgh signed their former employee to a one-year contract Feb. 25 and he has found his way into the team’s lineup. Eaton had been with the team for the past week on a non-roster tryout basis. Apparently, Penguins management and coaches liked what they saw from the veteran. “What a difference a month has made, going from not playing to signing with Pittsburgh,” said Eaton, who won a Stanley Cup with the Penguins in 2009. “It’s been a whirlwind. It’s the game you love and you’d do anything for it. “It feels great. It’s a great organization, first class. To be back to see all the familiar faces and be a part of a winning team, I’m excited to be back.” Eaton played his first game (since returning) with the Penguins on March 2 in Montreal, a 7-6 overtime win for Pittsburgh. He played his first game in Pittsburgh on March 4 in a 4-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning at CONSOL Energy Center. “It felt good to get back in there,” Eaton said. “A lot of emotions beforehand, first continued on page 113

game this year and back in a Penguins uniform. The nerves were there. But all the emotions I’ve been through before, it’s business as usual.” The Penguins know what to expect when Eaton is in the lineup. He is still the same type of player from his Penguins days — four seasons from 2006-10 — a steady, positionally-sound, defensive defenseman. “They know what they’re getting with me,” Eaton said. “I’m just going to work hard and contribute anyway that I can.” Eaton is in the twilight of his NHL career, which has spanned 12 seasons and four cities (Philadelphia, Nashville, Pittsburgh and Long Island). At this juncture, Eaton is elated to be a part of the team, and for one final run at championship glory. After arriving for his first non-roster practice with the Penguins a week prior to being signed, Eaton jokingly told the media, “I just want to play. I would play for free, but I don’t think that’s allowed.” It isn’t about the money. Or the fame. It’s only about the love of the game. continued on page 114

continued from page 113
It’s that attitude and mentality that makes Eaton such a valuable commodity among the team. He’s a player that has done and experienced it all — including a Stanley Cup title in ’09 and a frustrating Cup defeat in ’08. Eaton loves the game and his enthusiasm, work ethic and veteran wisdom will rub off on his teammates, especially the younger players like Beau Bennett, Simon Despres and Robert Bortuzzo. “Whatever is asked of me, I’m willing to do,” Eaton said. “Competition is always healthy. If I can push those guys and make them better, help them out along the way, whatever it takes.” Eaton’s work ethic has always been his biggest asset. He isn’t the biggest defenseman at 6-foot-1, 215 pounds. He isn’t the fastest player, nor the flashiest, nor the most physical. But Eaton’s been able to overcome everything for a fruitful NHL career. So it should be no surprise he worked his way from a tryout with WB/S to a roster spot with Pittsburgh to a role in the Penguins lineup. And now he’s got a new life with a new team — a new-old team. For Eaton, this is a new beginning, not the end of the road. Roads? Where he’s going, he doesn’t need roads.

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS FOUNDATION
PROJECT POWER PLAY Project Power Play represents a group of partners; The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, Highmark, the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County, who are focused on building 12 multi-sport dek hockey rinks to encourage physical activity and provide accessibility to hockey facilities for youth. The first two rinks in the City of Pittsburgh are located at Banksville Park on Crane Avenue and at Lewis Park in Hazelwood adjacent to the YMCA, both opened at the end of 2012. Over the next three years, 10 more rinks will be constructed as part of the $2.1 million project. Project Power Play funding comes from Highmark which is committing $1.5 million and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation which is providing $600,000. Additional contributions come from the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and the local municipalities, which are providing land for the rinks, as well as maintenance, lighting and other support. Dave Soltesz, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation says, “The Foundation’s mission includes creating opportunities for youth that stress physical fitness, teamwork and sportsmanship. The dek hockey rinks and related programs will serve youth in the region, fulfill the Foundation’s mission to encourage youth fitness, and help to make hockey a more accessible sport. These are the best dek hockey rinks anywhere,” Soltesz says. “You have to see it to believe it.” The facilities, 155’ x 75’, are multi-sport courts and each includes a premier dasherboard system like those used in the NHL, players’ benches, penalty box, scorer’s table, goals at each end, and start-up dek hockey equipment. Each facility will have nine access gates, including handicap access via the service gate. Black vinyl fences enclose each facility. Soltesz says, “We are proud of our sport. We are proud of our region, and we are proud to put these types of facilities in the communities.”

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS FOUNDATION
PensFIT
In a first-of-its-kind program, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation is providing free floor hockey equipment to more than 250 elementary and middle schools in Allegheny County. The program, known as PensFIT, got its start on Friday, November 9 when Penguins alum Phil Bourque delivered the first set of equipment to Neil Armstrong Middle School in Bethel Park. The equipment for each school retails at more than $1,000 and includes goals, sticks, stick bags, hockey balls, goalie equipment and a storage bag. In addition to providing student workbooks and instructional manuals, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation will offer a seminar at CONSOL Energy Center for the schools’ physical education teachers – hosted by the Penguins’ coaching staff and team alumni. PensFIT is designed as a three-year initiative to assist elementary schools in providing new opportunities for physical education classes. The long-term goal is to supply free equipment to 600 elementary and middle schools in 10 counties. Schools from surrounding counties will be added during the second year of the program. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation has teamed up with corporate partner FedEx Ground on delivery of the equipment. FedEx Ground will provide shipping to the schools free of charge.

WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON
PENGUINS
Joining the American Hockey League for its inaugural season in 1999-00, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have established themselves as one the most successful franchises in the league. After posting a 23-43-9-5 record in its first season of play and missing the playoffs, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton enjoyed one of the biggest turnarounds in league history as the team made it to its first-ever Calder Cup Final appearance in 2001. Though they would fall to the Saint John Flames in six games, the Penguins would carry on a tradition of success both on and off the ice. In total, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton has appeared in the Calder Cup Final three times and reached the playoffs in 11 out of 13 seasons, including 10 consecutive postseason berths — tied for the longest active streak in the AHL. The 1999-00 season saw the Penguins sellout 26 games their inaugural season. The following year Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton set the league record by selling out the entire season (40-games) en route to a streak BRAD THIESSEN of 144 consecutive sellouts that still stands today as an AHL record. The AHL-affiliate to the Pittsburgh Penguins since its inception, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton has helped develop former draft picks such as Marc-Andre Fleury, Brooks Orpik, Tyler Kennedy and Joe Vitale. Ten former Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins lifted the Stanley Cup when Pittsburgh defeated Detroit in seven games in 2009. continued on page 150

The Penguins have also seen many of their coaches rise up the ranks with Dan Bylsma and Todd Reirden manning the bench in Pittsburgh, Michel Therrien in Montreal, Todd Richards in Columbus and Mike Yeo in Minnesota. The 2010-11 season marked one for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton history books. Under the guidance of first-year head coach John Hynes, the SIMON DESPRES Penguins went 58-21-0-1 to claim their first-ever Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy as AHL regular-season champions. In the process, Hynes won the Louis A.R. Pieri Award as the AHL’s Outstanding Coach, while the team set records for wins in a season (58), points ZAC SILL in a season (117), and fewest losses in a season (21). Goaltender Brad Thiessen joined Dany Sabourin as the team’s second recipient of the Aldege “Baz” Bastien Memorial Award. Now in their 14th season of play, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have amassed more wins (450) and points (987) than any other team in the league over the last ten years.

MIKE LANGE
PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER
One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 36th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM “The X” and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

ATI – INVESTING IN PITTSBURGH’S FUTURE… Committed to Maintaining American Leadership in Manufacturing Mission-Critical Metallics® ATI is building an advanced Hot Rolling and Processing Facility (HRPF) in Brackenridge, PA. This project, just outside Pittsburgh, will be the most powerful hot rolling facility in the world for manufacturing nickel-based alloys, titanium, specialty alloys, zirconium and stainless steel sheet and plate. At a cost of $1.1 billion, the HRPF is among the largest industrial projects currently underway in the United States. When the HRPF is completed in 2014, ATI will have invested nearly $4.4 billion in new, advanced manufacturing capabilities and asset acquisitions since 2004. These investments have been in Western Pennsylvania, Utah, North Carolina, Ohio, Wisconsin, California, Oregon, Alabama and Massachusetts. ATI believes that Pittsburgh, Western Pennsylvania and the United States must be in the vanguard of global manufacturing and that the American worker can compete with anyone given the best products, tools and technologies.

The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program presented by Dick’s Sporting Goods will feature 13 teams playing at the AAA level — eight boys teams and five girls teams. “Part of our overall vision of supporting local youth hockey has been to create an elite Pittsburgh Penguins youth program that would attract top players in different age groups, offering an excellent environment to develop skills, teach teamwork and compete against top teams from other areas,” said David Morehouse, CEO and President of the Pittsburgh Penguins. “The Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) and Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL) do such a great job of growing the game here, and there are a number of good amateur programs. But we thought it made sense to have a AAA program directly affiliated with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

LITTLE PENGUINS LEARN TO PLAY HOCKEY
Sidney Crosby and his family wanted to help parents introduce their children to the game of hockey — and to do it without having to incur a prohibitive up-front cost. The result is the Little Penguins Learn to Play Hockey program. This generous donation and tremendous, one-of-a-kind opportunity allows children, aged 4-8, to receive free head-to-toe hockey equipment and 10 sessions of on-ice instruction. The 2012-13 season will be the fifth consecutive year for the Little Penguins program, which continues to grow. Last season twenty-three rinks hosted the program, which includes four girls-only locations. Since the program began during the 2008-2009 season more than 3,200 children have been introduced to hockey through this program. This season, 1,000 participants aged 4-8 will receive free gear and learn the game. Thanks to the combined efforts of Sidney Crosby, the Pittsburgh Penguins, Penguins Foundation, Reebok, and Dick’s Sporting Goods, all participants receive full sets of Reebok SC87 equipment, including skates, stick, helmet, gloves, pants, shoulder pads, shin pads, elbow pads, and an equipment bag, as well as an official Little Penguins jersey and helmet stickers. After four highly successful seasons, the program sells out quickly. During the pre-registration period, parents may view information regarding participating rinks, starting dates, number of sessions, and times of instructional sessions, which are listed on the Penguins’ website. For participant convenience, registration will occur online at pittsburghpenguins.com. “We were both excited and amazed by the reaction to the Little Penguins program in previous seasons, and we’re happy to be able to

offer the program again for another year,” Crosby said. “The goal is to continue to create opportunities for more kids in the Pittsburgh area to take up hockey. With the Little Penguins program, they can receive head-to-toe hockey equipment and learn the game in a fun and organized way.” “It’s a tribute to Sid and his family that they want to reach out and create this incredible opportunity for children in the Pittsburgh area,” said Penguins CEO and President David Morehouse. “One of their goals was to help parents by providing free head-to-toe hockey equipment to properly equip their children. The Penguins are honored to join Reebok and Dick’s Sporting Goods in supporting Sid and this great program.”

BEHIND THE BENCH WITH COACH DAN TIPS FOR YOUTH HOCKEY PLAYERS
SKATE, SKATE, SKATE No matter what level you are playing, skating is everything when it comes to hockey. However, skating isn’t just about being able to move backwards or forwards. Change of direction is critical when your team is on the transition from defense to offense, or vice versa. That makes being able stop, turn or pivot on a dime and quickly accelerate out of a start position as much a key to being a good skater as straight-ahead speed. Work hard to improve your skating when you can!
THE IMPORTANCE OF PASSING Pay attention to your passing. Nothing moves the puck up ice quicker than a tape-to-tape pass. A good passing team is able to maintain possession of the puck for long stretches, putting itself in position to generate more offense. What separates the great passers from the good ones is not only are they able to deliver the puck to a teammate when he or she is wide open, but they are able to use the boards and make area passes to teammates in traffic. “Practice perfect passing.”

GET TO THE NET Everybody has probably heard the saying ‘good things happen when you go to the net.’ There is a good reason for that — everything happens there. When you have a chance to shoot, get the puck on net. You also have to make sure that you physically go to the net so that way you are there for tips, rebounds and screens — all plays that lead directly to goals.
WORK HARD AND HAVE FUN We all want to be the best players we can be and help our team win each time we step on the ice. The easiest way to achieve this — WORK HARD EVERY TIME you step on the ice because work ethic is a huge key to being a successful hockey player. Just as important as working hard is ENJOYING THE GAME. Hockey is just that — a game — which means it is something we do to entertain ourselves. When you are having fun on the ice, chances are good that you are playing your best.
DID I MENTION HOW IMPORTANT SKATING IS?

PITTSBURGH BECOMING A HOCKEY HOTBED

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania might not have a fancy nickname like ‘Hockeytown’, nor is it located in “The State of Hockey” — which is one of Minnesota’s unofficial nicknames for those of you scoring at home — but over the last decade, the ‘Steel City’ has cemented its status as one of the rising hotbeds of the hockey universe. Less than a decade ago, that statement would have been nearly impossible to believe. As the sweltering summer heat swept through our region in 2005, 2005 NHL DRAFT the NHL was in the final stages of wrapping up a lockout that cost the league the entire ’04-05 campaign. Locally, the Penguins were coming off a NHL-worst 58-point season in the year preceding the lockout, and local amateur hockey numbers were in sharp decline. Those fortunes changed with the fortuitous bounce of a ping-pong ball on July 22, 2005 — a stoke of luck that delivered wonderkid Sidney Crosby to the black-and-gold. In the blink of an eye, Evgeni Malkin joined the fold and the duo quickly transformed an up-andcoming team into Stanley Cup champions by 2009. The on-ice and box office success achieved by the Penguins since the arrival of Crosby and Malkin has increased hockey’s profile in Pittsburgh tenfold. Before Crosby’s debut in October 2005, Pittsburgh didn’t have much of a presence within the hockey world outside of legendary Hall of Fame owner Mario Lemieux, who was winding down his illustrious career. Sure, Upper St. Clair native Ryan Malone was coming off an impressive 22-goal rookie campaign with his hometown team, RYAN MALONE and Plum’s R.J. Umberger was set to

make an NHL roster for the first time with the cross-state rival Philadelphia Flyers. But at the time, despite the talents each displayed, both seemed more like exceptions rather than trendsetters. While Malone, who helped the Penguins reach the Cup Final in ’08 before departing R.J. UMBERGER to the Tampa Bay Lightning, and Umberger continue to produce annually on hockey’s grandest stage, the next generation of Pittsburgh-born and trained players continues to make their mark on the hockey world. The dramatic improvement of the Pittsburgh amateur hockey pipeline was showcased at the 2011 NHL Draft in St. Paul, Minnesota, when four of the first 64 selections — J.T. Miller (NY Rangers, 1st round, 15th overall); John Gibson (Anaheim; 2nd round; 39th overall); Brandon Saad (Chicago, 2nd round, 43rd overall); and Vince Trocheck (Florida; 3rd round; 64th overall) — each grew up playing their youth hockey within the local amateur hockey ranks. With his selection at No. 15 overall, Miller became the highest-drafted player ever from the Pittsburgh region, edging out Umberger, who was taken 16th overall by Vancouver in 2001. Gibson was the second goaltender taken in the ’11 draft. Saad, who slipped a bit on draft day after being considered a top-five talent earlier that year, became the first of the quartet to reach the NHL when he made the Blackhawks’ ’1112 opening-night roster. He appeared in two BRANDON SAAD regular-season and two playoff contests with the Hawks, while in between starring for the Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). As good as Saad and Gibson were last year — and First and Third-Team All-OHL honors, respectively, indicate both enjoyed fine seasons — neither was the best Pittsburgh-born player in the OHL.

That honor went to London Knights goaltender — and Wexford native — Michael Houser, who like the four players drafted in ’11 is an alum of the Pittsburgh Hornets ‘AAA’ program. Houser put together one of the finest junior seasons ever while leading the Knights to an OHL playoff championship and a runner-up finish at the Memorial Cup. Houser, who signed an entry-level contract with the Florida Panthers organization during the summer, was named the Canadian Hockey League’s ‘Goaltender of the Year’, won the OHL’s ‘Goaltender of the Year’ award and he became just the third American to win the OHL Most Outstanding Player award after posting a 46-15-0-1 record, 2.47 goals-against average and a .925 save percentage. His 46 wins tied the OHL record. Although Team USA had a disappointing showing at the 2012 World Junior Championship, it is impressive to note that of the 23 players who comprised the Americans’ roster, four (17%) hailed from Western Pennsylvania — Saad, Miller, Gibson and defenseman Stephen Johns, a defenseman from the University of Notre Dame who was selected by Chicago in the second round (60th overall) of the 2010 NHL Draft. This April, the 2013 Frozen Four — college hockey’s version of March Madness — will come to CONSOL Energy Center. If recent Frozen Fours are any indication, there is a good chance somebody from the 412 or 724 area code will factor heavily into determining a champion. That’s because each of the last three winners — Boston College in 2012 and ’10, and Minnesota-Duluth in ’11 — have been buoyed by local contributors. Leading the charge for Boston College at the ’12 Frozen Four was a pair of Mt. Lebanon Blue Devil alums — starting netminder Parker Milner and defenseman Patrick Wey. On their way to leading the Eagles to the title, both players were named to the Northeast Regional All-Tournament Team. Wey, who was drafted by the Washington Capitals in the fourth round (115th overall) of the 2009 NHL Draft, and Milner also played continued on page 183

smaller roles on Boston College’s ’10 championship squad. In between BC’s victories, Plum native Kenny Reiter helped backstop the University of Minnesota-Duluth to a Frozen Four championship over Michigan in ’11 — meaning the winning netminder from the past two national champions has come from Pittsburgh. Young players across our area from mites to high school players to stars at the college and junior level strive each day to become permanent NHL fixtures like Malone and Umberger. Dylan Reese, Mike Weber and Matt Bartkowski are three young defensemen with a sprinkle of NHL experience who appear poised to make that leap in the coming years. The elder statesman of the group is Reese, who like Malone hails from Upper St. Clair and is joining his hometown team this season. Prior to signing with Pittsburgh during the offseason, Reese has played a combined 74 NHL games with the New York Islanders over the past three seasons. Cranberry native Weber has the most experience of the three, suiting up for 132 games with the Buffalo Sabres entering the ’12-13 campaign. A punishing defender, Weber is probably most notorious to DYLAN REESE fans in these parts for not being afraid to mix it up physically with Crosby and Malkin in recent matchups against them. Bartkowski made the opening-night roster for the then-defending Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins last season. The previous spring, he participated in Boston’s march to the Cup as a member of the team’s taxi squad. Ironically, each of Bartkowski’s first three NHL games during the ’10-11 season came at CONSOL Energy Center. As you can see, hockey is alive and well in Pittsburgh at all levels — and that’s without us mentioning the vastly-improved Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL) and the numerous players slated to join the college and junior ranks this coming season. Thanks to the on-ice success of the Penguins translating throughout the local community to children of all ages, hockey is only going to continue growing in these parts well into the future.

YOUTH HOCKEY UPDATE
LOCAL PRODUCTS SAAD AND MILLER PRODUCING IN NHL By: Brian Zagorac
For years, Western Pennsylvania has been regarded as a factory for producing football stars. It may be time for a changing of the guard, however, as two highlytouted, local hockey prospects are making names for themselves on the biggest stage. Brandon Saad (Gibsonia, PA) of the Chicago Blackhawks BRANDON SAAD and J.T. Miller (East Palestine, OH) of the New York Rangers have cemented themselves in the National Hockey League this season after being regarded as top prospects in their respective organizations. Saad and Miller are also both products of the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite amateur hockey organization presented by Dick’s Sporting Goods, formerly known as the Pittsburgh Hornets. Saad, drafted in the second round and 43 overall in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, played his junior hockey with the Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League. Playing mostly on a line with superstar forwards Jonathan Toews and Marion Hossa, Saad has recorded four goals and four assists this season with Chicago while dressing in all

but one game. The twenty-year-old left winger made his NHL debut for the Blackhawks last season, recording an assist in two games. J.T. Miller made his NHL debut this year for New York on February 5. Miller was the highest ever drafted Pittsburgh-born and trained player when he was selected 15 overall by the Rangers in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. The two-way center has recorded two goals and two assists in thirteen games played this season. Miller, 19, is continuing his successful hockey year; as he was an alternate captain for Team USA at the 2013 World Juniors in Ufa, Russia that went on to win the gold medal. He followed that up by being the youngest player selected to the American Hockey League All-Star game in January. Miller was one of four Western PA natives to represent Team USA at the World Juniors this past winter. He was joined by goaltender and Anaheim Ducks prospect John Gibson (Pittsburgh), Washington Capitals forward prospect Riley Barber (Pittsburgh) and Florida Panthers draft pick Vincent Trocheck (Pittsburgh). Gibson, drafted in the second round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, was named Tournament Most Valuable Player for his stellar play in net. All four are products of the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite amateur organization. J.T. MILLER

PENS PROFILE
MARK EATON By: Mark Madden
MADDEN
When defenseman Mark Eaton journeyed back to Pittsburgh, bus travel was involved. More than seven hours at one stretch, in fact. Eaton was without a contract when the NHL lockout finally ended. When no big-league teams came calling, He inked a minor-league tryout pact with the Penguins on Jan. 23, joining their American Hockey League farm club in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Eaton played six games with the WB/S Penguins. AHL teams don’t travel by chartered flight. They travel primarily by bus. “The longest [bus ride] was to Norfolk,” said Eaton, 35. “Over seven hours. That will test out your back.” And your mettle. But Eaton’s desire and skill won out. He signed a deal with the Penguins on Feb. 25, rejoining the team with whom he’d previously spent four season. Eaton originally joined the Penguins for the 2006-07 season, leaving the Nashville Predators via free agency. He helped the Pens win the Stanley Cup in 2009. Eaton signed with the New York Islanders after the 2009-10 campaign. The 6-foot-2, 212-pound spent two years with the Islanders. He played 34 games with the Islanders last season, registering three assists. Eaton got off to a good start upon his return to the Penguins, helping them win four straight games. He was plus-4 in a 6-1 home victory over the Islanders on March 10. “I don’t feel too bad,” he said after the first home win of his second Penguins’ go-round, a 4-3 victory over Tampa Bay on March 4. “Hockey’s hockey. I’ve played it long enough. Any time you’re lacking in game condition, you can make up for it by thinking the game and just trying to be in the right spot. “I’m just looking to get better every practice and every game.” That’s going to be easier in Pittsburgh. Eaton thrived under coach Dan Bylsma during his previous tenure. “There’s no question it helps,” Eaton said of the familiarity. “It takes away the factor of overloading my thinking. I already know the systems pretty well. Being able to not have to think out there and just continued on page 203

reacting — that helps a lot.” Eaton may not be a legendary figure in Pittsburgh, but he did some impressive things. A defensive defenseman, Eaton exploded offensively in the 2009 playoffs, racking up four goals and three assists in 24 post-season games. Eaton’s four playoff goals tied his career high for an entire NHL regular season. That was then. More recently, Eaton considered retiring: “A week before my first week at Wilkes-Barre, I contemplated hanging ‘em up. So, six weeks later, to be here, I’m glad I gave it a go.” Eaton knows he may be in and out of the lineup. His addition to the Penguins’ roster gave the club eight defensemen. Six usually dress. “You can never have too much depth on defense,” said the Delaware native. “At this point in my career, I know my game and I know what I have to do to stay ready. I can go in and out of the lineup and hopefully not miss a beat. I’ll add whatever they want me to add, whatever I have to do to help the team win.” Eaton figures to pitch in on the penalty-kill, long a personal strength. “I spent a year here with Tony my last year here,” said Eaton, referring to Penguins’ assistant coach Tony Granato, the man in charge of the team’s PK. “I know what he likes. I know what he’s trying to accomplish on the PK. I’ve done it before.” Eaton is back in the saddle. And back on the chartered flight. But he enjoyed his month-long stint with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. “It was good,” said Eaton, who made his NHL debut in 1999-00 with Philadelphia. “A phenomenal AHL place to be. Great facilities, great coaching staff and a great group of kids down there. It couldn’t have been a better transition for me.”
EATON IS BACK IN THE SADDLE. AND BACK ON THE CHARTERED FLIGHT.

MATT COOKE #AskCooke @Lovejizzle Who is your favorite teammate to prank? #AskCooke “Pascal Dupuis. Actually, I take that back. It’s MarcAndre Fleury.” “No, I mean we’re on the same team, but we go after each other. “ @x_penguinn @penguins Any superstitions? #AskCooke #Pens “No, I’m more of a routine guy. If a routine is working I stick with it, if it’s not I change it up.” @ricardohockey87 @penguins What’s your best pregame song? #AskCooke “I have a playlist. I mean, there’s not any certain one. Again, I think that’s part of the routine. When it’s working, you stick with it. When it doesn’t, you change it up a little bit. So, it depends on the mood.” @lolwutcasey @penguins What is your current favorite band? #AskCooke “Like I said, there’s not any one. Kind of got on Chris Tomlin a little bit. But my favorite is Tragically Hip. Local guys that I know personally, so I’m just a fan of them.” @x_penguinn @penguins What’s your favorite sport besides hockey? #AskCooke #Pens “My favorite sport to play besides hockey is golf, but I’ve grown a liking to soccer. My daughter plays it and baseball because my son plays it. The more exposed you become to other games the more you learn the nuances of them and enjoy them. But definitely golf for me.” @Waldschmidt14 @penguins Matt, what’s your favorite thing to do when you aren’t playing hockey? #AskCooke “Spending time with my family. My kids are 8 and 10 and 19, just being able to spend time with them and not focus on hockey, but be a part of their lives is an amazing thing for me.” @MorganHoov7 @penguins How many teeth have you lost due to hockey? #AskCooke “Too many to count.” @knappster11 Matt, what’s your favorite movie? #AskCooke “I got a bunch, but the classic I always go back to is The Shawshank Redemption.

Notre Dame defenseman, Chicago Blackhawks draftee and Wampum, Pa. native Stephen Johns left Ellwood City High School after his sophomore year when the U.S. National Team Development Program came calling, but he made certain to remember his way back home. And after spending his junior and senior years at Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor, Mich., while playing for the NTDP, Johns did what he had to do to — come home. He returned to Ellwood City for “two or three days,” just enough time to graduate. “My grandmother graduated from there and my parents and my older brother,” Johns explained. “I felt like I was following in their footsteps. I have so much pride in where I’m from and I wanted to 2010 NHL DRAFT • STEPHEN JOHNS solidify that. “I was raised to remember your roots and who you are and the values you were raised with, and I couldn’t ask for better. My real home will always be Wampum.” This weekend Johns and the Fighting Irish are at home in South Bend, Ind., hosting a second-round, best-of-three Central Collegiate Hockey Association postseason series against Bowling Green.

The eventual goal is the NCAA Tournament and, ultimately, the Frozen Four. Johns knows the way there, as well, and not just because this year’s NCAA championship will be contested April 11-13, at CONSOL Energy Center. He was a member of Notre Dame’s last Frozen Four participant, in 2010-11, in St. Paul, Minn. That was a team comprised in part of 12 freshmen, a group that included Johns, a second-round pick of the Blackhawks in 2010 and right winger Bryan Rust, a third-round pick of the Penguins in that same 2010 NHL Entry Draft. All 12 of those Frozen Four freshmen are now juniors on a Notre Dame team that finished 21-12-3 overall and second in 2010 NHL DRAFT • BRYAN RUST the CCHA at 17-8-3-2 (the CCHA recognized shootout wins), three points behind first-place Miami. “My freshman year we were a really young team that had a lot of spark and got a few lucky bounces,” Johns recalled. “I think we surprised everyone. “Last year was kind of a letdown year but this year the core of our team, the juniors and seniors, has matured. We’ve matured over these last two years and we know how hard it is to get there and how hard you have to work.” Johns and Rust have been prominent members of Notre Dame’s leadership core.

Johns, 6-foot-4 and 233 pounds, has teamed with Kevin Lind (6-3, 223) to comprise ND’s shutdown pair on defense. In doing so Johns has carved out a reputation for himself as a thumper. How quickly he makes it to the NHL may be determined by the progress he continues to make as a puck-handler and a puckmover. Johns had a career-high 12 assists heading into this weekend’s series against Bowling Green and had matched his career high with 13 points. “I see myself as a shutdown defenseman that intimidates and plays a physical game and is able to shut down the other team’s top line,” Johns said. “If I can pitch in offensively I’ll be happy. “I understand the style I need to play. I’m working on little stuff, footwork, being calm under pressure and making a simple, smart first pass.” Rust (5-11, 202) has enjoyed a breakout season as a junior. After combining for just 11 goals as a freshman and sophomore, Rust had produced career-highs in goals (12), assists (17) and points (29) entering the Bowling Green series. Rust was second among Irish in scoring, just behind linemate Anders Lee (18+16) and just ahead of linemate Jeff Costello (9+17). Johns and Rust are roommates at Notre Dame. A trip to the Frozen Four would be the third in Notre Dame’s hockey history and, for Johns, another homecoming. “My freshman year we had four or five guys from Minnesota and I saw how happy they were playing in front of family and friends on one of the biggest stages in hockey,” Johns said. “I’ve pictured myself coming onto the ice at CONSOL [Energy Center] and seeing my friends and family in the stands. That would be an incredible experience, playing in front of the people that got me to this point. “That would be one of those moments where, obviously, I’d never forget it. I don’t think you can put into words how incredible that could be.”
