GAME NOTES By: Bob Grove

THE SERIES Tonight the Penguins will be looking to win a third consecutive home game against the Capitals for the first time in more than five years as Washington makes its final regular-season visit to Pittsburgh this season. Pittsburgh snapped an eight-game home losing streak against the Capitals (0-7-1) with a 4-3 overtime win Jan. 22 last season, then followed that with a 5-2 victory here on Feb. 7, as Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin each had a goal and two assists and the Penguins went three-for-four on the power play. . . In two games this season against the Capitals, the Penguins are 5-for-7 on the power play (71.4 percent. That’s a special teams turnaround for Pittsburgh, which was 2-for-27 (7.4 percent) on the power play in its previous eight games against Washington. . . The Penguins earned a 6-3 road victory over the Capitals in the first game between the teams this season on Feb. 3. . . Before its eight-game home drought against Washington, Pittsburgh had won seven straight home games against the Capitals, the last win coming on Dec. 27, 2007. . . The Penguins have allowed only 12 goals in their last five home games against Washington. . . The Capitals are just 2-for-14 on the power play (14.2 percent) in their last five games against the Penguins, although they have a way of finding power-play production when they play in

Pittsburgh; they’re 9-for-21 (42.8 percent) in their last eight games here. . . Tonight marks the 200th regular-season game between the teams. Pittsburgh is 95-83-16-5 all-time against Washington, including 54-35-7-2 at home. . . Each of Alexander Ovechkin’s last six goals against the Penguins has been scored here in Pittsburgh. He has been held without a goal in six of his last 10 games against the Penguins and has 21 goals and 39 points in 30 career games against Pittsburgh. . . Crosby has 14 goals and 41 points in 24 career games against the Capitals, while Malkin has nine goals and 34 points in 22 career games against them.

THE PENGUINS This game closes a three-game homestand for Pittsburgh, which hosted the New York Rangers on Saturday and Boston on Sunday. . . Chris Kunitz had goals in a career-high five straight games before being stopped in Toronto on March 9, ending his bid to become the 10th Pittsburgh player to record a goal in six straight. That list includes Mario (nine times, including a team-record 12-game stretch to start the 1992-93 season), Jaromir Jagr (five times), Paul Gardner, Mike Bullard, Jean Pronovost (three times), Pierre Larouche, Malkin (twice), Crosby and Petr Nedved. . . James Neal had a goal in four straight games before playing Boston here last week. . . Pittsburgh has two days off after this game and then plays on the road against the New York Islanders before returning home Sunday to host Philadelphia and kick off a season-long five-game homestand that also features games against Montreal, Winnipeg, the Islanders and Buffalo . . . Heading into last Thursday’s game in Toronto, Dan Bylsma had the second-best road winning percentage in NHL history among coaches whose teams had played at least 100 road games. Bylsma’s Pittsburgh teams were

87-48-16 in 151 regularseason road games, earning 62.9 percent of possible points. The only coach with a better record was Tom Johnson of Boston, whose Bruins teams went 63-27-12 in 102 road games, earning 67.6 percent of possible points. . . Brandon Sutter has a flair for the dramatic. After scoring the overtime winner at Montreal on March 2, Sutter scored goals 3:24 apart in the final six minutes to give the Penguins a 3-2 home victory over Boston on March 12.

This game begins a four-game road trip for the Capitals, who hosted Buffalo on Sunday and will play in Winnipeg both Thursday and Friday and then face the Rangers in New York. Washington is in a stretch of 11 games where its plays nine times on the road. . . The Capitals had lost three straight games after Carolina goaltender Justin Peters stopped 26 shots for a 4-0 shutout over Washington on March 12. . . That game was the start of a home-and-home series with the first-place Hurricanes, who at that point were 10 points ahead of the fourth-place Capitals in the Southeast Division. Washington was seven points out of a playoff berth in the Eastern Conference after that loss. . . Mike Ribeiro was leading the Capitals with 28 points, including a team-high 19 assists, while Nicklas Backstrom had three goals and 21 points.

The First Ever ES Hybrid. 40 MPG EPA-Estimated.* At first glance, it’s a bold statement of style. Read between the lines, however, and you’ll discover that the first ever ES Hybrid doesn’t merely make a statement, it backs it up. Take, for instance, the sleek, sculpted appearance. It’s not just for show—the aerodynamic design boosts fuel efficiency up to an EPA-estimated 40 MPG.* And while the hand-stitched panels and precision-crafted interior make a stunning first impression, the available next-generation technologies in connectivity elevate the conversation. Ultimately, the 2013 ES Hybrid not only sends a message—it’s sure to build a following.

PLAYERS SERVE GUESTS AT SKATES & PLATES CHARITY GALA

By: Wes Crosby

It’s customary for the Penguins to serve wicked wrist shots, pinpoint passes and earth-shattering body checks against opposing players. But the players traded in their sweaters and sticks for tuxedos and bowties on March 5 to serve dinner at the team’s annual Skates & Plates Charity Gala presented by Trib Total Media at CONSOL Energy Center. The gala benefitted the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, the Mario Lemieux Foundation and the Western Pennsylvania chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Since its inception in 1986, the event has raised over $5.75 million for local children’s

charities that focus on medical research. “It’s something that as players, we really enjoy doing,” first-time server Tanner Glass said. “Giving back is a big part of our life away from the game, so events like this are really important.” Penguins general manager Ray Shero said he considers the gala the team’s “best event” and said the players enjoy it just as much as the guests. “It gives our players the chance to mingle with our fans,” Shero said. “They have a great time, they’re interacting with everybody. So it’s a great night for them. They’re serving people and collecting tips for great causes.” The players, wearing long-tailed tuxedos with white vests and bowties, were each responsible for a table or two where they served salads, entrees and beverages. They competed to earn the most tips of the evening, which are collected for the event charities. Bragging rights for the highest tips were captured by defenseman Robert Bortuzzo, with a close second place finish by forward Pascal Dupuis. While coach Dan Bylsma cracked a few jokes during his pre-meal speech, he also drove home how unique this event is to the local community. “What other place could you have visited last night and watched Evgeni Malkin score a miraculous goal; then, the next night you have Evgeni serve you wine, tell you jokes, flash his smile and show his personality while serving dinner?” Bylsma asked. A unique experience indeed.

AROUND THE NHL By Mike Prisuta

MAKING HIS MARK: Florida winger Jonathan Huberdeau joined a select group by scoring 12 goals in his first 25 NHL games. The only other active NHL players who can claim having done that as rookies are Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin of the Penguins, Alex Ovechkin of the Capitals and Teemu Selanne of the Ducks. Huberdeau also managed to make a little Panthers history by becoming the first Florida player to score on two penalty shots in one season. AHEAD FOR NOW: Tampa Bay’s Martin St. Louis registered an assist on March 7 against Winnipeg and moved ahead of Tampa Bay teammate Vincent Lecavalier for the all-time Tampa Bay scoring lead. When the Lightning played the Panthers on March 12 St. Louis held an 865-862 lead over Lecavalier in career points. Only Joe Thornton of San Jose (954) and Jarome Iginla of Calgary (896) had scored more points than St. Louis since the 2000-01 season, St. Louis’ first full NHL season.

MARLEAU MILESTONE: The Sharks’ Patrick Marleau scored his 400th career goal on March 10 at Colorado. Marleau became the 30th player in NHL history to score his first 400 goals for the same team. STILL STINGY: St. Louis led the NHL in fewest shots allowed per game at 23.3 through the Blues’ first 25 games. St. Louis also led the league in that category last season and finished second in 2010-11.

IT HAD BEEN A WHILE: The Bruins’ 16-3-3 start was Boston’s best record through the first 22 games of a season since the 1929-30 Bruins went 19-3-0. STREAKING BLUE JACKETS:

Columbus had won five consecutive games heading into a March 12 meeting with Vancouver. No Blue Jackets players had been hotter than goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, who went 4-0-0, with a 0.77 goals-against average and a .972 save percentage, from March 4-10. Sergei Bobrovsky

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 14th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including six straight playoff appearances and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. The Penguins entered the 2012-13 season having sold out 254 straight games while setting new standards for local television ratings, merchandise sales, website traffic and social media. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open CONSOL Energy Center in August, 2010. The sparkling facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America and hosted such national events as the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Second and Third Rounds and the 2012 NHL Draft. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. An immaculately gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranks eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. The Penguins ownership group, local labor organizations and members of the Pittsburgh business community honored Lemieux in 2012 with a statue to commemorate his career and contributions to the city and the region. Appropriately named “Le Magnifique,” the statue, by nationally-acclaimed sculptor Bruce Wolfe, can be seen outside of the Trib Total Media gate at CONSOL Energy Center. Mario and his wife, Nathalie, and their four children live in Sewickley.

RON BURKLE CO-OWNER

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 14th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh — including the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four, coming in April, 2013. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for five-plus seasons and consistently rank among the most fan-friendly and community-minded teams in the NHL and all of pro sports. The Penguins reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009 and won the Cup in ‘09. The team’s solid foundation of ownership has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign many of the team’s young core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year — leading to six straight playoff berths. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award.

DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT

David Morehouse has established himself as one of the most dynamic senior executives in the National Hockey League. Since being named President of the Penguins in April, 2007, Morehouse has reshaped the team’s image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010, and oversees every aspect of the Penguins’ operations, reporting directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. Under Morehouse’s leadership, the Penguins quickly developed a new commitment to innovative fan outreach — including an annual event where players personally deliver season tickets to fans’ homes and a special preseason game where all 18,000 tickets are distributed free to local youth. His emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.-based NHL and NBA teams in local television ratings during the 2011-12 season. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins led all U.S.-based NHL teams in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales. Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of Morehouse’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids aged 5-7 each year. The Penguins have sold out every game for five-plus seasons, a streak that had reached 254 games before the start of the 2012-13 season. They also have sold out all suites for four-plus seasons and actually increased capacity at CONSOL Energy Center by 300 seats (to 18,387) after the arena’s inaugural season in 2010-11. Morehouse himself was named 2011 CEO Communicator of the Year by the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. Morehouse attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Vanessa, have four children and live in Sewickley Heights.

RAY SHERO

EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT & GENERAL MANAGER

Ray Shero has established himself as one of the premiere general managers in the National Hockey League. Shero, 50, who is in his seventh season as Pittsburgh’s GM, has transformed a franchise that missed the playoffs from 2002-06 into a perennial championship contender, including two Stanley Cup Final appearances and a Cup title in 2009. Shero, who was named general manager of the Penguins in May, 2006, arrived in Pittsburgh with a firm, forward-thinking managerial style that incorporates cutting-edge methods of technology, player relations, prospect development and salary cap management. Shero’s efforts have secured the Penguins’ long-term stability and competitiveness with his masterful maneuvering of the salary cap — the Penguins ranked No. 3 out of 122 pro sports franchises in spending efficiency according to Bloomberg Business Week — and multi-year signings of the team’s core players: Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Brooks Orpik, Kris Letang, and James Neal. Shero’s riskiest and boldest move paid off with hockey’s highest prize. With the Penguins needing a jolt of life late in the 2008-09 season, he promoted Wilkes-Barre/Scranton head coach Dan Bylsma to Pittsburgh. Bylsma led a turnaround that resulted in a championship in ’09. Bylsma also won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s “Most Outstanding Coach” in ’11. Shero cut his administrative teeth during 14 seasons as an assistant general manager with the Nashville Predators (1998-06) and Ottawa Senators (1993-98). Shero, a native of St. Paul, Minn., was raised in a hockey family filled with tradition. His father, Fred Shero, played for the NY Rangers (1947-50) and coached the Philadelphia Flyers for seven seasons. Fred won back-to-back Stanley Cups as head coach of the Flyers in 1974 and ’75 and also served as general manager of the Rangers for three years (1978-80), leading the club to the Stanley Cup Final in 1979. The Sheros are one of the few father-son tandems to have their names on the Cup. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. He twice led the team in scoring and was named team captain on two occasions. He graduated in 1984 as one of the top-10 scorers in school history. Shero, who was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1982 NHL Draft, spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. Shero is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.

RULES OF THE GAME PRESENTED BY

BOARDING

BOARDING To check or push a defenseless opponent in such a manner that causes the opponent to hit or impact into the boards dangerously or violently.

T:8.5”

B:8.75”

S:8.5”

-

The player applying the check needs to ensure his opponent is not in a defenseless position and if so, must avoid contact.

-

The player with the puck needs to avoid placing himself in a dangerous and defenseless position.

-

Any unnecessary contact with a player playing the puck on an obvious “icing” or “off-sides” play that does not impact boards should be treated as “charging.”

DELAY OF GAME A player may be penalized when, in the opinion of the Referee, is delaying the game in any matter. (Normally six conditions) 1.) Player or goaltender intentionally shoots or throws the puck out

of the playing area.

2.) A defensive player or goaltender in the defensive zone shoots the

puck directly (without being deflected) over the glass.

3.) A player or goaltender intentionally knocks the net’s goalpost off

its moorings, which stops the play.

4.) The goaltender plays the puck out of the trapezoid behind the net. 5.) The goaltender freezes the puck rather than passing it to a team-

mate when no player on the opposing team is within sufficient distance to apply offensive pressure.

6.) Any skater other than the goaltender who uses their hands to

make the puck unplayable.

INTERFERENCE INTERFERENCE

BODY POSITION: Body position will be determined as the player skating in front of or beside his opponent, traveling in the same direction. - A player who is behind an opponent, who does not have the puck, may not use his stick, body or free hand in order to restrain his opponent. POSSESSION OF THE PUCK: The last player to touch the puck, other than the goaltenders, will be considered the player in possession. RESTRAIN: The actions of a player or goaltender who does not have body position, but instead uses illegal means to impede an opponent who is not in possession of the puck. PICK: The action of a player or goaltender who checks an opponent who is not in possession of the puck and is unaware of the impending check/hit. FREE HAND: When a free hand is used to hold, pull, tug, grab or physically restrain an opponent from moving freely, this must be penalized as holding.

STICK: A player who does not have body position on his opponent, who used his stick to impede or prevent his opponent from moving freely on the ice shall be assessed a hooking penalty.

OFF-SIDES Players of the attacking team must not precede the puck into the attacking zone. (Two determining factors) 1.) One of a player’s skates is not in contact with or behind the blue

line of the attacking zone before the puck enters that zone.

2.) The puck must completely cross the edge of the blue line nearest

the attacking zone to be considered inside the attacking zone.

The act of using the stick in a manner that enables a player to restrain an opponent.

-

When a player is checking another in such a way that there is only stick-tostick contact, such action is not to be penalized as hooking.

TOURS AVAILABLE

GET A BEHIND THE SCENES LOOK AT THE ARENA

Tickets for CONSOL Energy Center’s tours draw visitors of all ages and interests who want to see more of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ home and the city’s newest, greenest entertainment facility. CONSOL Energy Center tours, presented by Bayer MaterialScience, walk visitors through areas of the building that fans might not get to see when they attend a game or other entertainment. For example, on the PNC Legends Level more than $1 million worth of artwork, done in collaboration with James Gallery of Pittsburgh, is on display. It includes large wall murals, 10 PNC Legendary Moments shadowboxes and photography featuring Pittsburgh Penguins players. Tours provide guests with an exclusive look at all seating levels of CONSOL Energy Center, as well as the First Niagara, Captain Morgan and Lexus clubs, a Canadian Party Suite, select locker rooms and more. Based on events taking place in the building, Suite 66 and the Visitor’s Hockey Locker Room are shown when available. These areas are of interest to many people but not ordinarily accessible to most visitors. One of the other features included in the tours is the centerpiece PensVision, measuring nearly 25’ wide and 15’ high and 70,000 pounds. With true High Definition resolution along with enhanced contrast and brightness, the screens redefine the arena video experience for Penguins fans. Just below the center-ice scoreboard there are two, 360 degree LED ribbon boards. These are a first of their kind in Pittsburgh. The scoreboard and LED ribbon boards combined cost a total of $8 million. Throughout CONSOL Energy Center there are over 800 flat-screen TVs. They are used to display messages to fans, keep fans in the game while away from

their seats along with displaying the menus at the concession stands throughout the arena. On the FedEx Level, just above the American Eagle Gate, sits the World’s Largest Goalie Mask. The idea of James Gallery, it was painted by renowned artist David Arrigo, who has painted masks for several NHL goaltenders. The display is presented by Bayer MaterialScience and features “The Science of Sport” kiosks showcasing the science behind sports including how a hockey puck moves on ice. The Goalie mask, which is 9.5 feet high by 8 feet wide by 12 feet deep and weighs in between 700-800 lbs, features the celebration of fans and players after a goal is scored. The materials used to construct the mask are protected by a high-performance polyurethane coating containing raw materials produced by Bayer MaterialScience. This basecoat serves as the foundation for both the white background and the artist’s colors. A final polyurethane clearcoat over the artwork provides additional protection and durability. Also part of the tour is the Highmark Kid’s Zone — an interactive play area that offers both educational and recreational activities for children of all ages. The Highmark Kid’s Zone includes four Wii consoles, videos and trivia, faceoff and puck games, along with a replica of the famous Sidney Crosby dryer. Located further down the hall is the Highmark Wall of Champions. The Highmark Wall of Champions is two stories tall and contains the official jerseys of all PIHL (Pittsburgh Interscholastic Hockey League) teams, regional high schools as well as select other amateur teams in the region. “The tour highlights the environmentally friendly components of the building which qualified CONSOL Energy Center to become the first NHL Arena to receive LEED Gold Certification,” says David Peart, Vice President, Pittsburgh Penguins. “The tours allow us to highlight our continuing efforts toward improving the environment, which are detailed on 12 different plaques located throughout the building,” says Mr. Peart. PITTSBURGH PENGUINS FOUNDATION

HEADS UP PITTSBURGH

KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE

In 2012, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation expanded the HEADS UP Pittsburgh free baseline concussion testing program to include youth athletes ages 10-14 in all sports. Since the program started in 2011, over 3,400 youth hockey players have been tested along with 1,500 athletes representing 12 other sports. The program originally began with youth hockey players only. Testing took place at UPMC Sports Medicine on the South Side, as well as at four Community College of Allegheny County locations — Boyce, North, South and West Hills Center. “Our original youth hockey testing program in 2011 was a tremendous success because it touched thousands of young players and created increased awareness about concussion safety,” said Dave Soltesz, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. “Based on our mission to actively promote physical well being among young people in the community, it was an easy decision to expand the program to other sports beyond hockey.” While athletes are being tested, their parents meet with UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program staff to learn about “HEADS UP Pittsburgh.” Certified athletic trainers from the UPMC Sports Concussion Program supervise the program and testing. MAY 25, 1991 STANLEY CUP CLINCHER With an 8-0 victory over the Minnesota North Stars, the Penguins become Stanley Cup champions for the first time in their 24-year history.

DECEMBER 27, 2000 THE COMEBACK

Sidney Crosby became the youngest player in NHL history at 18 years, 253 days to record 100 points in a season on April 17, 2006. Crosby collected three assists against the New York Islanders to reach the century mark in front of a hometown crowd of 17,084 fans.

JOIN THE RUSH!

TM

Introduced in the mid 1990’s, the American Eagle Student Rush Program is one of the most popular and well known marketing initiatives of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Designed to sell remaining game-day inventory, the American Eagle Student Rush program provides the Pittsburgh Penguins an opportunity to introduce new fans to the game of hockey at a discounted rate. Based upon the positive feedback the organization has received from current season ticket holders who were one-time Student Rush participants, the program has been successful in developing a long-term relationship with young, active Pittsburghers. During the 2012-13 season, at least 200 American Eagle Student Rush tickets will be made available for each regular season home game at CONSOL Energy Center. To avoid long waits outside during the winter months, the organization will host online pre-sales for most games. To receive pre-sale information, students can text RUSH to 32623 to register for the American Eagle Student Rush Mobile Club. Each pregame text includes the opportunity to win two free tickets to the next home game! In addition to the 200 tickets offered each game, several special Student Rush nights will be held. At least 500 student rush tickets will be available for these select games at the American Eagle Gate. Music, prizes and giveaways will also be provided courtesy of American Eagle Outfitters. For more information on the American Eagle Student Rush program and a schedule of upcoming Student Rush nights, scan the code at the top of the page or visit pittsburghpenguins.com/studentrushÂ

BEHIND THE SCENES WITH THE PENGUINS速 ON AND OFF THE ICE

MAKING CHRIS-TORY By: Sam Kasan

Sidney Crosby. Steven Stamkos. Ryan Getzlaf. Jeff Carter. Chris Kunitz? When Kunitz woke up on the morning of March 11, he found his name among the NHL leader board in several categories: points, goals and plus/minus rating. The Penguins winger ranked third in the NHL scoring race with 36 points, sat second (tied) in goals with 17, and topped the league with a plus-21 rating. “That’s unchartered territory for me,” Kunitz joked. If the Penguins were playing a normal 82-game season, Kunitz would have been on pace for 54 goals, 60 assists and 114 points. Kunitz, 33, had his biggest night of the season on March 10 against the New York Islanders. He scored three goals for his fourth-career hat trick, and added to assists for a new career-high five-point game. The Penguins fans celebrated the hat trick by throwing sock monkey puppets on the ice (the promotional giveaway item of the night). “The puck seems to be going in the net,” he said. “Hopefully, it keeps going.” continued on page 113

It isn’t that surprising to see Kunitz scoring goals with such success. After all, he is a five-time 20-goal scorer. What is a little surprising is the way he’s scoring his goals. Kunitz plays a physical and fast brand of hockey. He’s a guy that likes to get his hands dirty around the net and in the blue paint. He picks up a lot of his goals on rebounds and in net-front battles. But lately he’s also been scoring goals off of odd-man rushes and from the perimeter — an area where snipers prefer to shoot. “We see [Kunitz] at the net so often, we see him around the cage an awful lot and that’s more typical of his type of goals,” head coach Dan Bylsma said. “We don’t view him as a sniper or just a shooter. He has scored a few more recently. I think some of it is Sidney finding him in those high areas, that high one-time pass and Chris has converted several times.” Crosby, Kunitz’s longtime linemate, said part of their line’s production is the result of knowing each other so well and their similar mindsets. “Every night as a centerman you know he’s going to be physical, create loose pucks, be around the net,” Crosby said. “It’s much easier continued on page 114

to read off of those plays when you know where a guy will be. The more you play with a guy, you know what to expect. Kunitz is pretty easy to read. He’s up and down the wing, goes hard to the net, in on the forecheck. “We like to attack. We have that same mentality. When there’s openings or open ice, we both know we’re going for it.” Like a true teammate, Kunitz likes to give the credit for his scoring boom to playing alongside the best player in the NHL. “’Sid’ draws a lot of attention to him,” Kunitz said. “It’s getting behind guys and finding areas, we’ve scored a couple third-man high goals when people turn and focus on him. “I attribute all or most of my success to playing with him.” And while Kunitz enjoys seeing his name among Crosby, Stamkos, Getzlaf and Carter, he is much more interested in getting two points for his team than himself. “It’s rewarding and nice to get some wins,” Kunitz said. “[Winning] feels better than points.” That said, he doesn’t mind the points. “We’re having a lot of fun,” he said. “When you come back to the bench smiling, that’s a good thing.” Kunitz has been smiling a lot this season.

PROJECT POWER PLAY Project Power Play represents a group of partners; The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, Highmark, the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County, who are focused on building 12 multi-sport dek hockey rinks to encourage physical activity and provide accessibility to hockey facilities for youth. The first two rinks in the City of Pittsburgh are located at Banksville Park on Crane Avenue and at Lewis Park in Hazelwood adjacent to the YMCA, both opened at the end of 2012. Over the next three years, 10 more rinks will be constructed as part of the $2.1 million project. Project Power Play funding comes from Highmark which is committing $1.5 million and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation which is providing $600,000. Additional contributions come from the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and the local municipalities, which are providing land for the rinks, as well as maintenance, lighting and other support. Dave Soltesz, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation says, “The Foundation’s mission includes creating opportunities for youth that stress physical fitness, teamwork and sportsmanship. The dek hockey rinks and related programs will serve youth in the region, fulfill the Foundation’s mission to encourage youth fitness, and help to make hockey a more accessible sport. These are the best dek hockey rinks anywhere,” Soltesz says. “You have to see it to believe it.” The facilities, 155’ x 75’, are multi-sport courts and each includes a premier dasherboard system like those used in the NHL, players’ benches, penalty box, scorer’s table, goals at each end, and start-up dek hockey equipment. Each facility will have nine access gates, including handicap access via the service gate. Black vinyl fences enclose each facility. Soltesz says, “We are proud of our sport. We are proud of our region, and we are proud to put these types of facilities in the communities.”

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS FOUNDATION

PensFIT

In a first-of-its-kind program, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation is providing free floor hockey equipment to more than 250 elementary and middle schools in Allegheny County. The program, known as PensFIT, got its start on Friday, November 9 when Penguins alum Phil Bourque delivered the first set of equipment to Neil Armstrong Middle School in Bethel Park. The equipment for each school retails at more than $1,000 and includes goals, sticks, stick bags, hockey balls, goalie equipment and a storage bag. In addition to providing student workbooks and instructional manuals, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation will offer a seminar at CONSOL Energy Center for the schools’ physical education teachers – hosted by the Penguins’ coaching staff and team alumni. PensFIT is designed as a three-year initiative to assist elementary schools in providing new opportunities for physical education classes. The long-term goal is to supply free equipment to 600 elementary and middle schools in 10 counties. Schools from surrounding counties will be added during the second year of the program. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation has teamed up with corporate partner FedEx Ground on delivery of the equipment. FedEx Ground will provide shipping to the schools free of charge.

WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON

PENGUINS

Joining the American Hockey League for its inaugural season in 1999-00, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have established themselves as one the most successful franchises in the league. After posting a 23-43-9-5 record in its first season of play and missing the playoffs, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton enjoyed one of the biggest turnarounds in league history as the team made it to its first-ever Calder Cup Final appearance in 2001. Though they would fall to the Saint John Flames in six games, the Penguins would carry on a tradition of success both on and off the ice. In total, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton has appeared in the Calder Cup Final three times and reached the playoffs in 11 out of 13 seasons, including 10 consecutive postseason berths — tied for the longest active streak in the AHL. The 1999-00 season saw the Penguins sellout 26 games their inaugural season. The following year Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton set the league record by selling out the entire season (40-games) en route to a streak BRAD THIESSEN of 144 consecutive sellouts that still stands today as an AHL record. The AHL-affiliate to the Pittsburgh Penguins since its inception, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton has helped develop former draft picks such as Marc-Andre Fleury, Brooks Orpik, Tyler Kennedy and Joe Vitale. Ten former Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins lifted the Stanley Cup when Pittsburgh defeated Detroit in seven games in 2009. continued on page 150

continued from page 150

The Penguins have also seen many of their coaches rise up the ranks with Dan Bylsma and Todd Reirden manning the bench in Pittsburgh, Michel Therrien in Montreal, Todd Richards in Columbus and Mike Yeo in Minnesota. The 2010-11 season marked one for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton history books. Under the guidance of first-year head coach John Hynes, the SIMON DESPRES Penguins went 58-21-0-1 to claim their first-ever Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy as AHL regular-season champions. In the process, Hynes won the Louis A.R. Pieri Award as the AHL’s Outstanding Coach, while the team set records for wins in a season (58), points ZAC SILL in a season (117), and fewest losses in a season (21). Goaltender Brad Thiessen joined Dany Sabourin as the team’s second recipient of the Aldege “Baz” Bastien Memorial Award. Now in their 14th season of play, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have amassed more wins (450) and points (987) than any other team in the league over the last ten years.

MIKE LANGE

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 36th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM “The X” and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

PHIL BOURQUE

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK COLOR ANALYST

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his eighth season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for WPXI-TV’s coverage of Penguins hockey.

ATI – INVESTING IN PITTSBURGH’S FUTURE… Committed to Maintaining American Leadership in Manufacturing Mission-Critical Metallics® ATI is building an advanced Hot Rolling and Processing Facility (HRPF) in Brackenridge, PA. This project, just outside Pittsburgh, will be the most powerful hot rolling facility in the world for manufacturing nickel-based alloys, titanium, specialty alloys, zirconium and stainless steel sheet and plate. At a cost of $1.1 billion, the HRPF is among the largest industrial projects currently underway in the United States. When the HRPF is completed in 2014, ATI will have invested nearly $4.4 billion in new, advanced manufacturing capabilities and asset acquisitions since 2004. These investments have been in Western Pennsylvania, Utah, North Carolina, Ohio, Wisconsin, California, Oregon, Alabama and Massachusetts. ATI believes that Pittsburgh, Western Pennsylvania and the United States must be in the vanguard of global manufacturing and that the American worker can compete with anyone given the best products, tools and technologies.

The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program presented by Dick’s Sporting Goods will feature 13 teams playing at the AAA level — eight boys teams and five girls teams. “Part of our overall vision of supporting local youth hockey has been to create an elite Pittsburgh Penguins youth program that would attract top players in different age groups, offering an excellent environment to develop skills, teach teamwork and compete against top teams from other areas,” said David Morehouse, CEO and President of the Pittsburgh Penguins. “The Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) and Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL) do such a great job of growing the game here, and there are a number of good amateur programs. But we thought it made sense to have a AAA program directly affiliated with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

LITTLE PENGUINS LEARN TO PLAY HOCKEY

Sidney Crosby and his family wanted to help parents introduce their children to the game of hockey — and to do it without having to incur a prohibitive up-front cost. The result is the Little Penguins Learn to Play Hockey program. This generous donation and tremendous, one-of-a-kind opportunity allows children, aged 4-8, to receive free head-to-toe hockey equipment and 10 sessions of on-ice instruction. The 2012-13 season will be the fifth consecutive year for the Little Penguins program, which continues to grow. Last season twenty-three rinks hosted the program, which includes four girls-only locations. Since the program began during the 2008-2009 season more than 3,200 children have been introduced to hockey through this program. This season, 1,000 participants aged 4-8 will receive free gear and learn the game. Thanks to the combined efforts of Sidney Crosby, the Pittsburgh Penguins, Penguins Foundation, Reebok, and Dick’s Sporting Goods, all participants receive full sets of Reebok SC87 equipment, including skates, stick, helmet, gloves, pants, shoulder pads, shin pads, elbow pads, and an equipment bag, as well as an official Little Penguins jersey and helmet stickers. After four highly successful seasons, the program sells out quickly. During the pre-registration period, parents may view information regarding participating rinks, starting dates, number of sessions, and times of instructional sessions, which are listed on the Penguins’ website. For participant convenience, registration will occur online at pittsburghpenguins.com. “We were both excited and amazed by the reaction to the Little Penguins program in previous seasons, and we’re happy to be able to

offer the program again for another year,” Crosby said. “The goal is to continue to create opportunities for more kids in the Pittsburgh area to take up hockey. With the Little Penguins program, they can receive head-to-toe hockey equipment and learn the game in a fun and organized way.” “It’s a tribute to Sid and his family that they want to reach out and create this incredible opportunity for children in the Pittsburgh area,” said Penguins CEO and President David Morehouse. “One of their goals was to help parents by providing free head-to-toe hockey equipment to properly equip their children. The Penguins are honored to join Reebok and Dick’s Sporting Goods in supporting Sid and this great program.”

BEHIND THE BENCH WITH COACH DAN TIPS FOR YOUTH HOCKEY PLAYERS

SKATE, SKATE, SKATE No matter what level you are playing, skating is everything when it comes to hockey. However, skating isn’t just about being able to move backwards or forwards. Change of direction is critical when your team is on the transition from defense to offense, or vice versa. That makes being able stop, turn or pivot on a dime and quickly accelerate out of a start position as much a key to being a good skater as straight-ahead speed. Work hard to improve your skating when you can!

THE IMPORTANCE OF PASSING Pay attention to your passing. Nothing moves the puck up ice quicker than a tape-to-tape pass. A good passing team is able to maintain possession of the puck for long stretches, putting itself in position to generate more offense. What separates the great passers from the good ones is not only are they able to deliver the puck to a teammate when he or she is wide open, but they are able to use the boards and make area passes to teammates in traffic. “Practice perfect passing.”

GET TO THE NET Everybody has probably heard the saying ‘good things happen when you go to the net.’ There is a good reason for that — everything happens there. When you have a chance to shoot, get the puck on net. You also have to make sure that you physically go to the net so that way you are there for tips, rebounds and screens — all plays that lead directly to goals.

WORK HARD AND HAVE FUN We all want to be the best players we can be and help our team win each time we step on the ice. The easiest way to achieve this — WORK HARD EVERY TIME you step on the ice because work ethic is a huge key to being a successful hockey player. Just as important as working hard is ENJOYING THE GAME. Hockey is just that — a game — which means it is something we do to entertain ourselves. When you are having fun on the ice, chances are good that you are playing your best.

DID I MENTION HOW IMPORTANT SKATING IS?

PITTSBURGH BECOMING A HOCKEY HOTBED

continued on page 178

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania might not have a fancy nickname like ‘Hockeytown’, nor is it located in “The State of Hockey” — which is one of Minnesota’s unofficial nicknames for those of you scoring at home — but over the last decade, the ‘Steel City’ has cemented its status as one of the rising hotbeds of the hockey universe. Less than a decade ago, that statement would have been nearly impossible to believe. As the sweltering summer heat swept through our region in 2005, 2005 NHL DRAFT the NHL was in the final stages of wrapping up a lockout that cost the league the entire ’04-05 campaign. Locally, the Penguins were coming off a NHL-worst 58-point season in the year preceding the lockout, and local amateur hockey numbers were in sharp decline. Those fortunes changed with the fortuitous bounce of a ping-pong ball on July 22, 2005 — a stoke of luck that delivered wonderkid Sidney Crosby to the black-and-gold. In the blink of an eye, Evgeni Malkin joined the fold and the duo quickly transformed an up-andcoming team into Stanley Cup champions by 2009. The on-ice and box office success achieved by the Penguins since the arrival of Crosby and Malkin has increased hockey’s profile in Pittsburgh tenfold. Before Crosby’s debut in October 2005, Pittsburgh didn’t have much of a presence within the hockey world outside of legendary Hall of Fame owner Mario Lemieux, who was winding down his illustrious career. Sure, Upper St. Clair native Ryan Malone was coming off an impressive 22-goal rookie campaign with his hometown team, RYAN MALONE and Plum’s R.J. Umberger was set to

make an NHL roster for the first time with the cross-state rival Philadelphia Flyers. But at the time, despite the talents each displayed, both seemed more like exceptions rather than trendsetters. While Malone, who helped the Penguins reach the Cup Final in ’08 before departing R.J. UMBERGER to the Tampa Bay Lightning, and Umberger continue to produce annually on hockey’s grandest stage, the next generation of Pittsburgh-born and trained players continues to make their mark on the hockey world. The dramatic improvement of the Pittsburgh amateur hockey pipeline was showcased at the 2011 NHL Draft in St. Paul, Minnesota, when four of the first 64 selections — J.T. Miller (NY Rangers, 1st round, 15th overall); John Gibson (Anaheim; 2nd round; 39th overall); Brandon Saad (Chicago, 2nd round, 43rd overall); and Vince Trocheck (Florida; 3rd round; 64th overall) — each grew up playing their youth hockey within the local amateur hockey ranks. With his selection at No. 15 overall, Miller became the highest-drafted player ever from the Pittsburgh region, edging out Umberger, who was taken 16th overall by Vancouver in 2001. Gibson was the second goaltender taken in the ’11 draft. Saad, who slipped a bit on draft day after being considered a top-five talent earlier that year, became the first of the quartet to reach the NHL when he made the Blackhawks’ ’1112 opening-night roster. He appeared in two BRANDON SAAD regular-season and two playoff contests with the Hawks, while in between starring for the Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). As good as Saad and Gibson were last year — and First and Third-Team All-OHL honors, respectively, indicate both enjoyed fine seasons — neither was the best Pittsburgh-born player in the OHL.

That honor went to London Knights goaltender — and Wexford native — Michael Houser, who like the four players drafted in ’11 is an alum of the Pittsburgh Hornets ‘AAA’ program. Houser put together one of the finest junior seasons ever while leading the Knights to an OHL playoff championship and a runner-up finish at the Memorial Cup. Houser, who signed an entry-level contract with the Florida Panthers organization during the summer, was named the Canadian Hockey League’s ‘Goaltender of the Year’, won the OHL’s ‘Goaltender of the Year’ award and he became just the third American to win the OHL Most Outstanding Player award after posting a 46-15-0-1 record, 2.47 goals-against average and a .925 save percentage. His 46 wins tied the OHL record. Although Team USA had a disappointing showing at the 2012 World Junior Championship, it is impressive to note that of the 23 players who comprised the Americans’ roster, four (17%) hailed from Western Pennsylvania — Saad, Miller, Gibson and defenseman Stephen Johns, a defenseman from the University of Notre Dame who was selected by Chicago in the second round (60th overall) of the 2010 NHL Draft. This April, the 2013 Frozen Four — college hockey’s version of March Madness — will come to CONSOL Energy Center. If recent Frozen Fours are any indication, there is a good chance somebody from the 412 or 724 area code will factor heavily into determining a champion. That’s because each of the last three winners — Boston College in 2012 and ’10, and Minnesota-Duluth in ’11 — have been buoyed by local contributors. Leading the charge for Boston College at the ’12 Frozen Four was a pair of Mt. Lebanon Blue Devil alums — starting netminder Parker Milner and defenseman Patrick Wey. On their way to leading the Eagles to the title, both players were named to the Northeast Regional All-Tournament Team. Wey, who was drafted by the Washington Capitals in the fourth round (115th overall) of the 2009 NHL Draft, and Milner also played continued on page 183

smaller roles on Boston College’s ’10 championship squad. In between BC’s victories, Plum native Kenny Reiter helped backstop the University of Minnesota-Duluth to a Frozen Four championship over Michigan in ’11 — meaning the winning netminder from the past two national champions has come from Pittsburgh. Young players across our area from mites to high school players to stars at the college and junior level strive each day to become permanent NHL fixtures like Malone and Umberger. Dylan Reese, Mike Weber and Matt Bartkowski are three young defensemen with a sprinkle of NHL experience who appear poised to make that leap in the coming years. The elder statesman of the group is Reese, who like Malone hails from Upper St. Clair and is joining his hometown team this season. Prior to signing with Pittsburgh during the offseason, Reese has played a combined 74 NHL games with the New York Islanders over the past three seasons. Cranberry native Weber has the most experience of the three, suiting up for 132 games with the Buffalo Sabres entering the ’12-13 campaign. A punishing defender, Weber is probably most notorious to DYLAN REESE fans in these parts for not being afraid to mix it up physically with Crosby and Malkin in recent matchups against them. Bartkowski made the opening-night roster for the then-defending Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins last season. The previous spring, he participated in Boston’s march to the Cup as a member of the team’s taxi squad. Ironically, each of Bartkowski’s first three NHL games during the ’10-11 season came at CONSOL Energy Center. As you can see, hockey is alive and well in Pittsburgh at all levels — and that’s without us mentioning the vastly-improved Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL) and the numerous players slated to join the college and junior ranks this coming season. Thanks to the on-ice success of the Penguins translating throughout the local community to children of all ages, hockey is only going to continue growing in these parts well into the future.

PENS PROFILE

CHRIS KUNITZ By: Mark Madden

MADDEN

Shortly after his line combined for five goals and seven assists in a 6-1 demolition of the New York Islanders on March 10 at CONSOL Energy Center, winger Chris Kunitz said, “It’s fun. But we need to get better.” Which begs this question: How much better can Kunitz, Sidney Crosby and Pascal Dupuis possibly get? Kunitz had three goals and two assists vs. the Isles. Dupuis netted two goals. Crosby had five helpers. As of March 12, Crosby led the NHL in points with 12 goals and 33 assists. Kunitz ranked third with 18 goals and 19 assists. Dupuis weighed in with 11 goals and six assists. “Yeah, we’re having a lot of fun, definitely,” Kunitz allowed. “When you come back to the bench smiling, it’s a good thing. But we’ve still got to go out there every day and work hard. We still try to get better.” Kunitz had a career year last year, piling up personal bests in goals (26) and points (61) while tying his high for assists (35). But, as of March 12, Kunitz was on pace to beat his marks for goals and points despite the NHL’s truncated 48-game schedule. If Team Canada organizers aren’t thinking about the native of Regina, Saskatchewan for next year’s Olympics in Sochi, Russia, they should be. Kunitz, 33, got his hat trick against the Islanders via his usual method: He went hard to the net and steered home pucks from right in front. But he’s scored an inordinate amount of goals on slappers, snappers and one-timers, including his game-winner at Philadelphia on March 7 as the Penguins rallied from a 4-1 deficit to beat the old enemy, 5-4. Kunitz also buried a slap shot 13:42 into the third period to trigger a wild three-goal burst and help the Penguins edge Boston, 3-2, March 12 at CONSOL Energy Center. “I’m not purposely trying to get one-timers and slap shots,” Kunitz said after beating the Islanders. “You try and find the areas that are successful. Tonight, I didn’t really have to shoot the puck. I had a few from the crease and one on a rebound. I go to the net, go to those continued on page 203

areas, and the puck seems to find me right now.” Eight of Kunitz’ first 18 goals — including two against the Islanders — came on the power play. “The guys were moving around,” Kunitz said of the Penguins’ manadvantage performance vs. the Isles. “We had some good zone time. We won face-offs. We hunted down pucks. We did the things needed to be successful out there and got the momentum in our favor.” Both of Kunitz’ PPGs March 10 came on goalmouth feeds from James Neal, more renowned as a sniper than a playmaker. One came during a 5-on-3. “[Neal’s passes] were really nice,” Kunitz said. “Five-onthree, we practice it a lot. You don’t usually get those passes, but I got good position, and Nealer had good position to throw it to the net and put it on my stick. “The other one, he burst into the zone with speed. I got the puck over to him, and he made a nice play back.” Kunitz’ preferred game plan is a good one: Get Crosby the puck. “Anytime you can get [Crosby] the puck with speed, or anywhere on the ice, it opens up space. It pushes the D back,” Kunitz said. “It lets me create time to get up in the play or go to the net. That’s what you look for when you play with Sid.” After defeating Boston, the Penguins were 19-8 and on a six-game win streak. They led the NHL in goals with 100, and their string of victories included two by 5-4 and one by 7-6. The Pens play highoctane hockey. But will that work in the playoffs when most teams tighten up? “It’s not the perfect remedy,” said the 6-foot, 193-pound Kunitz. “You don’t want to be doing that. We know we can go out there and be offensive, but we have to be responsible in our own end first. When we play with the puck, gain their zone with speed, get the puck behind them and cause turnovers, we’re successful.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

KRIS LETANG #AskLetang @estuarypalomino @penguins How are you adjusting to life as a dad? #AskLetang “It’s been good. I mean, it takes up a lot of your time, but it’s the best thing that’s happened in my life, so I enjoy it.” @sid_the_kid_17 Who is the hardest player to defend in the league? #AskLetang “Except Sid and Geno on our team, I would say Datsyuk or Rick Nash. I think those two guys are tough to defend. Well, Nash has a long reach, he has a big body and he’s tough to move around. Datsyuk is so skilled, he’s quick and he can change direction really fast, so he’s really tough.” @RachelKocik @penguins Would you like to play on the Olympic team next year? #AskLetang #KnowTheFlow “It would be an honor, it would be a very great experience I guess. I’ve never been a part of the Olympics, so it would be a great accomplishment.” @Irishchick073 @penguins Other than hockey what are his other interests? #AskLetang “I mean right now, the baby. Otherwise, sometimes I go watch movies or go shopping here and there. Just enjoying the family life.” @RazorsAndRosary @penguins What’s one thing that you have to have on a road trip? #AskLetang “No, there’s nothing. I mean, I don’t know. Most of the time when I get there I just walk in the city and try to see what’s going on and most of the time I go eat with the guys or go eat in my room, go to bed early and get ready for the game.” @justasoopergirl @penguins If you could share the ice with any legendary player, who would it be and why? #AskLetang #PensTV “Ray Bourque. Probably it would be Ray Bourque or Scott Niedermayer, would be a great defensemen pair. Ray Bourque is probably one of the best defensemen that played the game both ways of the ice and Scott Niedermayer, he’s just, I mean just the way he skates, the way he understands the game, the way he played the game, he was just amazing to watch.”

LOCKDOWN By: Mike Prisuta

It took almost the entire first half of the season for the Penguins to find the mentality and the methodology to defend as well as they attack, but once they managed that the results were obvious. Even to the opposition. That point was driven home to Brooks Orpik by none other than Tampa Bay’s Martin St. Louis, who engaged the Penguins’ defenseman during a late BROOKS ORPIK delay in what was about to become a 4-3 Penguins victory over the Lightning on March 4. “At the end of the game St. Louis came up to me and said, ‘What the [expletive] was going on here tonight? You guys boxed us out at the hash marks when we were trying to get to the net,’” Orpik reported. “I think that’s pretty telling when you hear that from the other team.” That Lightning game had been MARTIN ST. LOUIS preceded by a wild, almost out of control, 7-6 survival in Montreal. And that Montreal slugfest had been preceded by a 4-1 loss at Carolina during which the Hurricanes appeared to have an Easy Pass to the Penguins’ net. And that Carolina debacle had been preceded by a 6-4 loss at Florida in which the Penguins had surrendered four power-play goals. No wonder they finally decided enough was enough. “We’ve been trying to find ourselves and find our game since the start of the year,” winger Matt Cooke maintained. Subsequent victories over the Flyers, Maple Leafs and Islanders in the wake of the impromptu St. Louis critique suggested the Penguins continued on page 218

were finally onto something, not just because of the results but also because of the manner in which they had been achieved. Other than one almost inexplicable bad first period in Philly, the Penguins had maintained their explosiveness but had also been tough to score against. “We’ve made leaps toward the way we can play a game and the way we should play games,” Cooke said. The season’s second half will be about trying to keep that up as much as anything else. “When you get a chance to go you want to go and score goals,” Cooke continued. “But sometimes the responsible play is to put it in behind the defense and force them to go back and wear them out in the offensive zone. We gave up four shots (on March 9) against Toronto in the first period. We gave up four shots against (on March 10) against the Islanders in the first period. “That’s the way we want to play.” Added Orpik: “If you talk about getting to the offensive zone so quick, maybe you start cheating out of the defensive zone. That leads to some chaos.” Ever since last spring’s playoff series against Philadelphia, the Penguins have been trying to avoid chaotic situations. The four games that followed the shootout in Montreal confirmed

the Penguins as capable of doing so, perhaps even as being better suited and better constructed to do so than many might suspect. “A lot of that is the way we execute, manage the puck and play with the puck,” head coach Dan Bylsma explained. “Any time you give a team transition offense, that’s a tough defense to play. You give other teams opportunities that way. “Starting with the second period in Philadelphia we did a much better job for two-and-a half games, a very good job of managing the puck. And we’ve played very well defensively as a result.” It takes individual and collective discipline to pull that off night after night. But if the Penguins can do so they’ll give themselves their best possible chance at postseason success. One of the tasks in the season’s second half will be to do that often enough that opponents eventually are no longer surprised when the Penguins go into lock-down mode. That’s a job Cooke is convinced these Penguins can handle, one that could and perhaps should make them a tough team to handle come playoff time. “I don’t see why not,” he said. “It’s a lot easier to play this way than be back-checking the whole time. “There are great hockey teams out there and it’s not just going to happen, we have to go out and earn it. That’s going to be our challenge the rest of the regular season.”
