GAME NOTES By: Bob Grove
THE SERIES The Penguins and Montreal Canadiens, two teams which entered the final month of the season battling for the top spot in the Eastern Conference, meet tonight here at CONSOL Energy Center for the final time in the regular season. . . Pittsburgh won the first game of the series, a wild 7-6 decision in Montreal on March 2 that saw Brandon Sutter score 52 seconds into overtime — a victory that spawned a 15-game winning streak, matching the second-longest in NHL history. . . The Canadiens made their first visit to Pittsburgh on March 26, and Sidney Crosby scored late in the second period while Marc-Andre Fleury and Tomas Vokoun combined for 37 saves in a 1-0 victory, the 13th win in the Penguins’ streak. Fleury left after two periods with a sore neck, and the shared shutout was the fourth in Pittsburgh history and the second in three seasons (Fleury and Brent Johnson shared a 3-0 home shutout of the NY Islanders on Feb. 2, 2011). It also was the first Penguins’ home shutout victory over Montreal since Les Binkley made 33 saves in a 4-0 win on March 3, 1971. . . Pittsburgh has gone 69:58 without allowing Montreal a goal. . . The Penguins have earned points in six consecutive games against the Canadiens (5-0-1), matching the longest such streak in team history. Their last regulation loss to Montreal was here on March 12, 2011, a 3-0 loss in which Carey Price made 26 saves for the Canadiens’ first road shutout of the Penguins in more than seven years. . . Pittsburgh is 6-1-2 in its last nine games against Montreal and 11-3-2 in its last 16 games against the Habs continued on page 8

. . . Since Crosby joined the Penguins, they are 18-8-4 in 30 games against Montreal. . . Pittsburgh has lost three of its last four shootouts against the Canadiens. . . Montreal is just 1-for-35 (2.8 percent) in its last 10 games against the Penguins, the lone goal coming here Jan. 20 last season by Andrei Kostitsyn. . . The Penguins are 1-for-22 (4.5 percent) on the power play in their last seven games against the Canadiens. . . Each of the last five games in this series has been decided by a single goal. . . Pittsburgh is 56-108-23-7 all-time against the Canadiens, including a 37-45-13-2 mark at home.
THE PENGUINS This is Pittsburgh’s first game following a three-game road trip that ended Saturday night in Florida. The Penguins had a three-day break following that game, but tonight’s game begins a stretch of playing three games in four nights. The Penguins will play in Boston on Friday night and then return home to host the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday in the first Saturday night home game of the season. It will also mark the Penguins’ first Saturday night home game since Jan. 7, 2012 against New Jersey. . . After that the Penguins will play only one more home game, also a Saturday night home date April 27 against Jordan Staal and the Carolina Hurricanes. . . The three-game road trip just concluded by the Penguins began April 9 in Carolina, where Beau Bennett and Evgeni Malkin scored 13 seconds apart in the third period to erase a 3-2 deficit and send the Penguins on to a 5-3 victory. That clinched the Atlantic Division title for the Penguins, the seventh division title in their history. . . The Penguins’ NHL-

record run of 10 consecutive shootout goals was snapped April 5 here against the New York Rangers in Pittsburgh’s 2-1 victory. The final goal in that streak was by Jussi Jokinen, who was playing his first game in a Pittsburgh uniform. He had also scored the lone Penguins’ goal in regulation, becoming the first player since Alexei Ponikarovsky to score a goal in his Pittsburgh debut. Jokinen, acquired for a seventh-round 2013 draft pick from Carolina, had 31 career shootout goals at that point, one behind leaders Zack Parise and Pavel Datsyuk among active players.
Montreal hosted Philadelphia on Monday night and will return home after tonight’s game to face the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday and Washington on Saturday before finishing the season with three road games. . . The Canadiens also hosted Washington on April 9, a game in which they allowed goals 1:46 apart in the second period and fell, 3-2. The next night, Boston’s win over New Jersey pushed the Bruins ahead of Montreal and into first place in the Northeast Division. . . The Canadiens lost defenseman Alexei Emelin for the season to a knee injury suffered April 6. . . Lars Eller had both Montreal goals in the loss to Washington . . . Montreal signed backup goaltender Peter Budaj to a two-year contract extension last week. . . Michael Ryder, acquired from Dallas earlier this season, was leading Montreal with 16 goals through 39 games. He and P.K. Subban shared the team scoring lead with 32 points.

The First Ever ES Hybrid. 40 MPG EPA-Estimated.* At first glance, it’s a bold statement of style. Read between the lines, however, and you’ll discover that the first ever ES Hybrid doesn’t merely make a statement, it backs it up. Take, for instance, the sleek, sculpted appearance. It’s not just for show—the aerodynamic design boosts fuel efficiency up to an EPA-estimated 40 MPG.* And while the hand-stitched panels and precision-crafted interior make a stunning first impression, the available next-generation technologies in connectivity elevate the conversation. Ultimately, the 2013 ES Hybrid not only sends a message—it’s sure to build a following.

COMMUNITY UPDATE
PENGUINS FANS PROVIDE A HUGE ASSIST FOR THE ANIMAL RESCUE LEAGUE SHELTER & WILDLIFE CENTER The Pittsburgh Penguins and Walgreens partnered to host the team’s second pet supplies collection before the Penguins-Rangers game at CONSOL Energy Center on Friday, April 5 and Penguins fans provided a huge assist to help their four-legged friends. The pet supplies collection benefitted the Animal Rescue League Shelter & Wildlife Center and donations of pet toys, treats, dry kitten or puppy food abounded. Fans also made monetary donations to help the Animal Rescue League continue their mission to assist animals in our area. The Animal Rescue League Shelter & Wildlife Center strives to provide temporary shelter, food, medical attention and comfort to all abandoned, neglected and injured animals brought to them by the community; to restore lost animals to their owners or seek new homes for them, and educate the public about humane care of animals with continued on page 22

a goal of reducing overpopulation. They also work to rehabilitate and release injured and orphaned wildlife and to provide educational programs to regional residents to help foster an appreciation for conservation and a harmonious existence between humans and wildlife. The Penguins Wives Association, Pittsburgh Penguins Booster Club, and representatives from the Animal Rescue League Shelter & Wildlife Center accepted more than 710 pet supplies and $2,225 from fans. Penguins partner Walgreens also committed its resources to ensure that the pet supplies collection would be a resounding success by accepting donations at Walgreens stores in the western Pennsylvania region, as well as stores in Ohio and West Virginia. Walgreens shoppers and Penguins fans were able to donate pet supplies until April 13. The Pittsburgh Penguins would like to thank each fan and animal lover who contributed to our pet supplies collection at CONSOL Energy Center or a local Walgreens store. It is with your support that we can help the Animal Rescue League Shelter & Wildlife Center continue to care for our furry friends and we applaud your generosity.

AROUND THE NHL LONG TIME COMING: Steve Sullivan’s latest tour of duty with the Devils began with a long-awaited bang. Sullivan, re-acquired from Phoenix prior to the NHL trade deadline, scored a goal for New Jersey on April 8, his first for the Devils since Feb. 15, 1997. Sullivan became the 24th player to be Steve Sullivan re-acquired by and see action for New Jersey. And the 16 years and 45 days he logged between Devils appearances marked the third-longest such streak in NHL history, behind Brendan Shanahan’s 17 years, 294 days (New Jersey) and Randy Cunneyworth’s 16 years, 325 days (Buffalo). SEEING RUBBER: The Bruins visited New Jersey on April 10 having allowed 40 or more shots against in three of their previous four games, the first time that had happened since March of 2006. That was part of a run that saw Boston surrender the first two goals in a game in five of eight games. That was something the Bruins had done nine times through their first 38 games this season. The Bruins’ record in those contests was 3-3-3.
WIN THE CLOSE ONES: Toronto’s 22-13-4 record through 39 games included an 11-3-0 record in one-goal decisions (non-shootout games). The Maple Leafs were 12-17-0 in one-goal, non-shootout games a season ago. PENALTY-KILLING CRITICAL: Colorado’s 12-22-5 mark through 39 games was mostly about penalty killing. The Avalanche went 10-6-2 in that span when not allowing an opponent a power-play goal, 2-15-3 when the opposition scored with the man-advantage and 0-1-1 when not facing a short-handed situation. LOVES THE WORK: Phoenix 17-16-6 record through 39 games saw goaltender Mike Smith once again establish that he’s at his best when busy. Smith improved his Phoenix numbers when facing 30 or more shots to 31-12-9 with a 2.18 goals-against average, and his career totals under those circumstances to 63-36-23 with a 2.47 GAA. 24

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN
Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 14th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including six straight playoff appearances and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. The Penguins entered the 2012-13 season having sold out 254 straight games while setting new standards for local television ratings, merchandise sales, website traffic and social media. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open CONSOL Energy Center in August, 2010. The sparkling facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America and hosted such national events as the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Second and Third Rounds and the 2012 NHL Draft. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. An immaculately gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranks eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. The Penguins ownership group, local labor organizations and members of the Pittsburgh business community honored Lemieux in 2012 with a statue to commemorate his career and contributions to the city and the region. Appropriately named “Le Magnifique,” the statue, by nationally-acclaimed sculptor Bruce Wolfe, can be seen outside of the Trib Total Media gate at CONSOL Energy Center. Mario and his wife, Nathalie, and their four children live in Sewickley.

RON BURKLE CO-OWNER
Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 14th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh — including the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four, coming in April, 2013. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for five-plus seasons and consistently rank among the most fan-friendly and community-minded teams in the NHL and all of pro sports. The Penguins reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009 and won the Cup in ‘09. The team’s solid foundation of ownership has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign many of the team’s young core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year — leading to six straight playoff berths. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award.

DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT
David Morehouse has established himself as one of the most dynamic senior executives in the National Hockey League. Since being named President of the Penguins in April, 2007, Morehouse has reshaped the team’s image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010, and oversees every aspect of the Penguins’ operations, reporting directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. Under Morehouse’s leadership, the Penguins quickly developed a new commitment to innovative fan outreach — including an annual event where players personally deliver season tickets to fans’ homes and a special preseason game where all 18,000 tickets are distributed free to local youth. His emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.-based NHL and NBA teams in local television ratings during the 2011-12 season. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins led all U.S.-based NHL teams in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales. Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of Morehouse’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids aged 5-7 each year. The Penguins have sold out every game for five-plus seasons, a streak that had reached 254 games before the start of the 2012-13 season. They also have sold out all suites for four-plus seasons and actually increased capacity at CONSOL Energy Center by 300 seats (to 18,387) after the arena’s inaugural season in 2010-11. Morehouse himself was named 2011 CEO Communicator of the Year by the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. Morehouse attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Vanessa, have four children and live in Sewickley Heights.

Shero, who was named general manager of the Penguins in May, 2006, arrived in Pittsburgh with a firm, forward-thinking managerial style that incorporates cutting-edge methods of technology, player relations, prospect development and salary cap management. Shero’s efforts have secured the Penguins’ long-term stability and competitiveness with his masterful maneuvering of the salary cap — the Penguins ranked No. 3 out of 122 pro sports franchises in spending efficiency according to Bloomberg Business Week — and multi-year signings of the team’s core players: Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Brooks Orpik, Kris Letang, and James Neal. Shero’s riskiest and boldest move paid off with hockey’s highest prize. With the Penguins needing a jolt of life late in the 2008-09 season, he promoted Wilkes-Barre/Scranton head coach Dan Bylsma to Pittsburgh. Bylsma led a turnaround that resulted in a championship in ’09. Bylsma also won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s “Most Outstanding Coach” in ’11. Shero cut his administrative teeth during 14 seasons as an assistant general manager with the Nashville Predators (1998-06) and Ottawa Senators (1993-98). Shero, a native of St. Paul, Minn., was raised in a hockey family filled with tradition. His father, Fred Shero, played for the NY Rangers (1947-50) and coached the Philadelphia Flyers for seven seasons. Fred won back-to-back Stanley Cups as head coach of the Flyers in 1974 and ’75 and also served as general manager of the Rangers for three years (1978-80), leading the club to the Stanley Cup Final in 1979. The Sheros are one of the few father-son tandems to have their names on the Cup. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. He twice led the team in scoring and was named team captain on two occasions. He graduated in 1984 as one of the top-10 scorers in school history. Shero, who was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1982 NHL Draft, spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. Shero is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.

JASON BOTTERILL ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER
Jason Botterill is in his fourth full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position in May, 2009, by GM Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockey-related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top minor-league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 36, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins; his responsibilities included salary cap management, professional and amateur scouting and overseeing prospect development. Botterill’s avant-garde approach and understanding of the salary cap has been a major asset for the Penguins. Before joining the Pittsburgh organization, he worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars. Botterill, a native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, was a firstround draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in the 1994 NHL Draft and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo. He also played 393 career games in the AHL and IHL, recording 127 goals and 257 points. Following his playing career, he returned to the University of Michigan to earn his MBA. RULES OF THE GAME PRESENTED BY
BOARDING
BOARDING To check or push a defenseless opponent in such a manner that causes the opponent to hit or impact into the boards dangerously or violently.
T:8.5”
B:8.75”
S:8.5”
-
The player applying the check needs to ensure his opponent is not in a defenseless position and if so, must avoid contact.
-
The player with the puck needs to avoid placing himself in a dangerous and defenseless position.
-
Any unnecessary contact with a player playing the puck on an obvious “icing” or “off-sides” play that does not impact boards should be treated as “charging.”
DELAY OF GAME A player may be penalized when, in the opinion of the Referee, is delaying the game in any matter. (Normally six conditions) 1.) Player or goaltender intentionally shoots or throws the puck out
of the playing area.
2.) A defensive player or goaltender in the defensive zone shoots the
puck directly (without being deflected) over the glass.
3.) A player or goaltender intentionally knocks the net’s goalpost off
its moorings, which stops the play.
4.) The goaltender plays the puck out of the trapezoid behind the net. 5.) The goaltender freezes the puck rather than passing it to a team-
mate when no player on the opposing team is within sufficient distance to apply offensive pressure.
6.) Any skater other than the goaltender who uses their hands to
make the puck unplayable.

INTERFERENCE INTERFERENCE
BODY POSITION: Body position will be determined as the player skating in front of or beside his opponent, traveling in the same direction. - A player who is behind an opponent, who does not have the puck, may not use his stick, body or free hand in order to restrain his opponent. POSSESSION OF THE PUCK: The last player to touch the puck, other than the goaltenders, will be considered the player in possession. RESTRAIN: The actions of a player or goaltender who does not have body position, but instead uses illegal means to impede an opponent who is not in possession of the puck. PICK: The action of a player or goaltender who checks an opponent who is not in possession of the puck and is unaware of the impending check/hit. FREE HAND: When a free hand is used to hold, pull, tug, grab or physically restrain an opponent from moving freely, this must be penalized as holding.
STICK: A player who does not have body position on his opponent, who used his stick to impede or prevent his opponent from moving freely on the ice shall be assessed a hooking penalty.
OFF-SIDES Players of the attacking team must not precede the puck into the attacking zone. (Two determining factors) 1.) One of a player’s skates is not in contact with or behind the blue
line of the attacking zone before the puck enters that zone.
2.) The puck must completely cross the edge of the blue line nearest
the attacking zone to be considered inside the attacking zone.
The act of using the stick in a manner that enables a player to restrain an opponent.
-
When a player is checking another in such a way that there is only stick-tostick contact, such action is not to be penalized as hooking.

GET A BEHIND THE SCENES LOOK AT THE ARENA
Tickets for CONSOL Energy Center’s tours draw visitors of all ages and interests who want to see more of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ home and the city’s newest, greenest entertainment facility. CONSOL Energy Center tours, presented by Bayer MaterialScience, walk visitors through areas of the building that fans might not get to see when they attend a game or other entertainment. For example, on the PNC Legends Level more than $1 million worth of artwork, done in collaboration with James Gallery of Pittsburgh, is on display. It includes large wall murals, 10 PNC Legendary Moments shadowboxes and photography featuring Pittsburgh Penguins players. Tours provide guests with an exclusive look at all seating levels of CONSOL Energy Center, as well as the First Niagara, Captain Morgan and Lexus clubs, a Canadian Party Suite, select locker rooms and more. Based on events taking place in the building, Suite 66 and the Visitor’s Hockey Locker Room are shown when available. These areas are of interest to many people but not ordinarily accessible to most visitors. One of the other features included in the tours is the centerpiece PensVision, measuring nearly 25’ wide and 15’ high and 70,000 pounds. With true High Definition resolution along with enhanced contrast and brightness, the screens redefine the arena video experience for Penguins fans. Just below the center-ice scoreboard there are two, 360 degree LED ribbon boards. These are a first of their kind in Pittsburgh. The scoreboard and LED ribbon boards combined cost a total of $8 million. Throughout CONSOL Energy Center there are over 800 flat-screen TVs. They are used to display messages to fans, keep fans in the game while away from

their seats along with displaying the menus at the concession stands throughout the arena. On the FedEx Level, just above the American Eagle Gate, sits the World’s Largest Goalie Mask. The idea of James Gallery, it was painted by renowned artist David Arrigo, who has painted masks for several NHL goaltenders. The display is presented by Bayer MaterialScience and features “The Science of Sport” kiosks showcasing the science behind sports including how a hockey puck moves on ice. The Goalie mask, which is 9.5 feet high by 8 feet wide by 12 feet deep and weighs in between 700-800 lbs, features the celebration of fans and players after a goal is scored. The materials used to construct the mask are protected by a high-performance polyurethane coating containing raw materials produced by Bayer MaterialScience. This basecoat serves as the foundation for both the white background and the artist’s colors. A final polyurethane clearcoat over the artwork provides additional protection and durability. Also part of the tour is the Highmark Kid’s Zone — an interactive play area that offers both educational and recreational activities for children of all ages. The Highmark Kid’s Zone includes four Wii consoles, videos and trivia, faceoff and puck games, along with a replica of the famous Sidney Crosby dryer. Located further down the hall is the Highmark Wall of Champions. The Highmark Wall of Champions is two stories tall and contains the official jerseys of all PIHL (Pittsburgh Interscholastic Hockey League) teams, regional high schools as well as select other amateur teams in the region. “The tour highlights the environmentally friendly components of the building which qualified CONSOL Energy Center to become the first NHL Arena to receive LEED Gold Certification,” says David Peart, Vice President, Pittsburgh Penguins. “The tours allow us to highlight our continuing efforts toward improving the environment, which are detailed on 12 different plaques located throughout the building,” says Mr. Peart. PITTSBURGH PENGUINS FOUNDATION
HEADS UP PITTSBURGH
KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE
In 2012, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation expanded the HEADS UP Pittsburgh free baseline concussion testing program to include youth athletes ages 10-14 in all sports. Since the program started in 2011, over 3,400 youth hockey players have been tested along with 1,500 athletes representing 12 other sports. The program originally began with youth hockey players only. Testing took place at UPMC Sports Medicine on the South Side, as well as at four Community College of Allegheny County locations — Boyce, North, South and West Hills Center. “Our original youth hockey testing program in 2011 was a tremendous success because it touched thousands of young players and created increased awareness about concussion safety,” said Dave Soltesz, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. “Based on our mission to actively promote physical well being among young people in the community, it was an easy decision to expand the program to other sports beyond hockey.” While athletes are being tested, their parents meet with UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program staff to learn about “HEADS UP Pittsburgh.” Certified athletic trainers from the UPMC Sports Concussion Program supervise the program and testing. Introduced in the mid 1990’s, the American Eagle Student Rush Program is one of the most popular and well known marketing initiatives of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Designed to sell remaining game-day inventory, the American Eagle Student Rush program provides the Pittsburgh Penguins an opportunity to introduce new fans to the game of hockey at a discounted rate. Based upon the positive feedback the organization has received from current season ticket holders who were one-time Student Rush participants, the program has been successful in developing a long-term relationship with young, active Pittsburghers. During the 2012-13 season, at least 200 American Eagle Student Rush tickets will be made available for each regular season home game at CONSOL Energy Center. To avoid long waits outside during the winter months, the organization will host online pre-sales for most games. To receive pre-sale information, students can text RUSH to 32623 to register for the American Eagle Student Rush Mobile Club. Each pregame text includes the opportunity to win two free tickets to the next home game! In addition to the 200 tickets offered each game, several special Student Rush nights will be held. At least 500 student rush tickets will be available for these select games at the American Eagle Gate. Music, prizes and giveaways will also be provided courtesy of American Eagle Outfitters. DUPUIS’ VALUE IS PRICELESS By: Wes Crosby
The Penguins are notorious for having a litany of offensive powerhouses. From arguably the two best players in the world — Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin — to a 40-goal scorer in James Neal and all the way to the newly-acquired future Hall of Famer Jarome Iginla. But there’s one name that has been a vital part to Pittsburgh’s scoring depth the past two seasons who rarely gets the recognition his fellow sharpshooters enjoy. That name is Pascal Dupuis. When Dupuis was traded to the Penguins from the Atlanta Thrashers on Feb. 9, 2008, he was seen as a complimentary player that would spend the bulk of his time on the third or fourth line helping to shut down the opposition’s top players. The 12-year veteran fit into that role during his first few years in Pittsburgh, but has since drastically upped his offensive production while becoming an integral part of the team’s top line. Dupuis scored a career-high 25 goals and 59 points in 2011-12 and had an NHL-best and career-long 17-game scoring streak, totaling 22 points (10G-12A). His streak ended due to the end of the regular season.
“He’s a guy you enjoy being on a line with,” linemate Chris Kunitz said. “His on-ice play obviously speaks for itself with his goal production and his work ethic.” continued on page 113

This year he has continued to excel next to Kunitz and, for much of the season, Sidney Crosby before the Penguins captain suffered a broken jaw on March 30. Dupuis shies away from an explanation for the rise in his production other than giving a majority of the credit to his linemates. “It’s playing with Sid, it’s playing with Kuni,” Dupuis said. “I’m playing the same game I used to play. Maybe the lockout helped a little bit with creating chemistry. We all three stayed here and worked on that tight, 3-on-3, down-low stuff. Maybe that part of my game was something I had to work on. “I was always an okay skater skating down the ice, but that tight area kind of game, if there was one good thing about the lockout it was that it gave me time to refine that part of my game.” That refinement has become evident while looking at his score sheet this season. Right now Dupuis already has 18 goals in 39 games entering Tuesday’s tilt with the Hurricanes. Projected across a full-82 game season, Dupuis would be on pace for about 38 goals — well above his previous high of 25 from last season. But while his production has increased during his time in Pittsburgh, Dupuis has always been one of the Penguins’ most dependable players, missing just two games over the past four seasons. Now in his sixth season with Pittsburgh, Dupuis said he thinks he has established himself as a leader in the locker room, helping to guide his younger teammates. “You know your way around,” Dupuis said. “You know what the system looks like because you’ve played in it for so long. You know what the coaching staff’s expecting from everybody and yourself as well, so you can probably help the new guys coming in. Even in practices and drills with them, you try to step in line and let them know what the drill’s going to be.” Kunitz, who has experienced a similar offensive spark — earning a career-high 61 points last season and has been even more lethal this campaign — has been Dupuis’ teammate for the past five

seasons. While he thinks Dupuis’ talent is unquestionable, Kunitz said his personality is his brightest asset. “He’s a guy that can make a somber room pretty happy,” Kunitz said. “He can make it upbeat with his sense of humor and his ability to give guys smiles. In the locker room, he means a lot to the team. “Ever since I’ve been here, he’s a guy that’s killed penalties, has been able to go on power plays, had to be on checking lines at some points and go back up to the first line. He’s very versatile in everything he does and it shows that that’s who you are, a leader in the room.” Dupuis is the Penguins’ version of a chameleon, meaning he can be plugged into virtually any role and blend seamlessly with the players surrounding him. He was a fundamental piece to the club even before his 59-point breakout season. The 34-year-old Quebec native has enjoyed the most productive years of his career while in Pittsburgh. Instead of taking full credit for his success, he heaped praise on the city for allowing him and his family to feel welcome over the past six years. “It’s all about comfort,” Dupuis said. “The family, wife and kids feel great, feel at home in Pittsburgh and that’s half the battle right there. You know your family is happy and you go to the rink and just have to worry about playing the game. “I used to say that’s half the battle,” Dupuis jokingly added, “but I kind of realized it’s really probably 80 percent of it.”

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS FOUNDATION
PROJECT POWER PLAY Project Power Play represents a group of partners; The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, Highmark, the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County, who are focused on building 12 multi-sport dek hockey rinks to encourage physical activity and provide accessibility to hockey facilities for youth. The first two rinks in the City of Pittsburgh are located at Banksville Park on Crane Avenue and at Lewis Park in Hazelwood adjacent to the YMCA, both opened at the end of 2012. Over the next three years, 10 more rinks will be constructed as part of the $2.1 million project. Project Power Play funding comes from Highmark which is committing $1.5 million and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation which is providing $600,000. Additional contributions come from the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and the local municipalities, which are providing land for the rinks, as well as maintenance, lighting and other support. Dave Soltesz, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation says, “The Foundation’s mission includes creating opportunities for youth that stress physical fitness, teamwork and sportsmanship. The dek hockey rinks and related programs will serve youth in the region, fulfill the Foundation’s mission to encourage youth fitness, and help to make hockey a more accessible sport. These are the best dek hockey rinks anywhere,” Soltesz says. “You have to see it to believe it.” The facilities, 155’ x 75’, are multi-sport courts and each includes a premier dasherboard system like those used in the NHL, players’ benches, penalty box, scorer’s table, goals at each end, and start-up dek hockey equipment. Each facility will have nine access gates, including handicap access via the service gate. Black vinyl fences enclose each facility. Soltesz says, “We are proud of our sport. We are proud of our region, and we are proud to put these types of facilities in the communities.”

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS FOUNDATION
PensFIT
In a first-of-its-kind program, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation is providing free floor hockey equipment to more than 250 elementary and middle schools in Allegheny County. The program, known as PensFIT, got its start on Friday, November 9 when Penguins alum Phil Bourque delivered the first set of equipment to Neil Armstrong Middle School in Bethel Park. The equipment for each school retails at more than $1,000 and includes goals, sticks, stick bags, hockey balls, goalie equipment and a storage bag. In addition to providing student workbooks and instructional manuals, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation will offer a seminar at CONSOL Energy Center for the schools’ physical education teachers – hosted by the Penguins’ coaching staff and team alumni. PensFIT is designed as a three-year initiative to assist elementary schools in providing new opportunities for physical education classes. The long-term goal is to supply free equipment to 600 elementary and middle schools in 10 counties. Schools from surrounding counties will be added during the second year of the program. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation has teamed up with corporate partner FedEx Ground on delivery of the equipment. FedEx Ground will provide shipping to the schools free of charge.

RECCHI, BURKE NAMED TO PENGUINS’ ALL-TIME TEAM
MARK RECCHI
Mark Recchi and Dr. Charles “Chip” Burke will be named to the Pittsburgh Penguins’ All-Time Team in a ceremony before tonight’s game against the Montreal Canadiens. Team owner Mario Lemieux will make a special presentation to Recchi and Burke. The Penguins’ fourth-round draft pick out of Kamloops in 1988, Recchi scored 154 goals and 385 points in 389 games over three different stints in Pittsburgh. He led the team in scoring in the 1990-91 regular season, recording 40 goals and 113 points in 78 games — then added 10 goals and 34 points in 24 playoff games on Lemieux’s right wing as the Penguins captured their first Stanley Cup. He ranks 11th all-time in goals, 13th in points, and ninth in game-winning goals (22) in Penguins’ history. Recchi played 1,652 games in a 22-year NHL career with the Penguins, Philadelphia, Montreal, Carolina, Atlanta, Tampa Bay and Boston. He retired in 2011 after registering 577 goals and 956 assists for 1,533 points. He also won Stanley Cups with Carolina and Boston. Recchi lives in Pittsburgh and is involved with the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite youth hockey program. continued on page 128

WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON
PENGUINS
Joining the American Hockey League for its inaugural season in 1999-00, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have established themselves as one the most successful franchises in the league. After posting a 23-43-9-5 record in its first season of play and missing the playoffs, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton enjoyed one of the biggest turnarounds in league history as the team made it to its first-ever Calder Cup Final appearance in 2001. Though they would fall to the Saint John Flames in six games, the Penguins would carry on a tradition of success both on and off the ice. In total, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton has appeared in the Calder Cup Final three times and reached the playoffs in 11 out of 13 seasons, including 10 consecutive postseason berths — tied for the longest active streak in the AHL. The 1999-00 season saw the Penguins sellout 26 games their inaugural season. The following year Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton set the league record by selling out the entire season (40-games) en route to a streak BRAD THIESSEN of 144 consecutive sellouts that still stands today as an AHL record. The AHL-affiliate to the Pittsburgh Penguins since its inception, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton has helped develop former draft picks such as Marc-Andre Fleury, Brooks Orpik, Tyler Kennedy and Joe Vitale. Ten former Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins lifted the Stanley Cup when Pittsburgh defeated Detroit in seven games in 2009. continued on page 150

The Penguins have also seen many of their coaches rise up the ranks with Dan Bylsma and Todd Reirden manning the bench in Pittsburgh, Michel Therrien in Montreal, Todd Richards in Columbus and Mike Yeo in Minnesota. The 2010-11 season marked one for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton history books. Under the guidance of first-year head coach John Hynes, the SIMON DESPRES Penguins went 58-21-0-1 to claim their first-ever Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy as AHL regular-season champions. In the process, Hynes won the Louis A.R. Pieri Award as the AHL’s Outstanding Coach, while the team set records for wins in a season (58), points ZAC SILL in a season (117), and fewest losses in a season (21). Goaltender Brad Thiessen joined Dany Sabourin as the team’s second recipient of the Aldege “Baz” Bastien Memorial Award. Now in their 14th season of play, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have amassed more wins (450) and points (987) than any other team in the league over the last ten years.

MIKE LANGE
PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER
One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 36th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM “The X” and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

ATI – INVESTING IN PITTSBURGH’S FUTURE… Committed to Maintaining American Leadership in Manufacturing Mission-Critical Metallics® ATI is building an advanced Hot Rolling and Processing Facility (HRPF) in Brackenridge, PA. This project, just outside Pittsburgh, will be the most powerful hot rolling facility in the world for manufacturing nickel-based alloys, titanium, specialty alloys, zirconium and stainless steel sheet and plate. At a cost of $1.1 billion, the HRPF is among the largest industrial projects currently underway in the United States. When the HRPF is completed in 2014, ATI will have invested nearly $4.4 billion in new, advanced manufacturing capabilities and asset acquisitions since 2004. These investments have been in Western Pennsylvania, Utah, North Carolina, Ohio, Wisconsin, California, Oregon, Alabama and Massachusetts. ATI believes that Pittsburgh, Western Pennsylvania and the United States must be in the vanguard of global manufacturing and that the American worker can compete with anyone given the best products, tools and technologies.

The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program presented by Dick’s Sporting Goods will feature 13 teams playing at the AAA level — eight boys teams and five girls teams. “Part of our overall vision of supporting local youth hockey has been to create an elite Pittsburgh Penguins youth program that would attract top players in different age groups, offering an excellent environment to develop skills, teach teamwork and compete against top teams from other areas,” said David Morehouse, CEO and President of the Pittsburgh Penguins. “The Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) and Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL) do such a great job of growing the game here, and there are a number of good amateur programs. But we thought it made sense to have a AAA program directly affiliated with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

LITTLE PENGUINS LEARN TO PLAY HOCKEY
Sidney Crosby and his family wanted to help parents introduce their children to the game of hockey — and to do it without having to incur a prohibitive up-front cost. The result is the Little Penguins Learn to Play Hockey program. This generous donation and tremendous, one-of-a-kind opportunity allows children, aged 4-8, to receive free head-to-toe hockey equipment and 10 sessions of on-ice instruction. The 2012-13 season will be the fifth consecutive year for the Little Penguins program, which continues to grow. Last season twenty-three rinks hosted the program, which includes four girls-only locations. Since the program began during the 2008-2009 season more than 3,200 children have been introduced to hockey through this program. This season, 1,000 participants aged 4-8 will receive free gear and learn the game. Thanks to the combined efforts of Sidney Crosby, the Pittsburgh Penguins, Penguins Foundation, Reebok, and Dick’s Sporting Goods, all participants receive full sets of Reebok SC87 equipment, including skates, stick, helmet, gloves, pants, shoulder pads, shin pads, elbow pads, and an equipment bag, as well as an official Little Penguins jersey and helmet stickers. After four highly successful seasons, the program sells out quickly. During the pre-registration period, parents may view information regarding participating rinks, starting dates, number of sessions, and times of instructional sessions, which are listed on the Penguins’ website. For participant convenience, registration will occur online at pittsburghpenguins.com. “We were both excited and amazed by the reaction to the Little Penguins program in previous seasons, and we’re happy to be able to

offer the program again for another year,” Crosby said. “The goal is to continue to create opportunities for more kids in the Pittsburgh area to take up hockey. With the Little Penguins program, they can receive head-to-toe hockey equipment and learn the game in a fun and organized way.” “It’s a tribute to Sid and his family that they want to reach out and create this incredible opportunity for children in the Pittsburgh area,” said Penguins CEO and President David Morehouse. “One of their goals was to help parents by providing free head-to-toe hockey equipment to properly equip their children. The Penguins are honored to join Reebok and Dick’s Sporting Goods in supporting Sid and this great program.”

BEHIND THE BENCH WITH COACH DAN TIPS FOR YOUTH HOCKEY PLAYERS
SKATE, SKATE, SKATE No matter what level you are playing, skating is everything when it comes to hockey. However, skating isn’t just about being able to move backwards or forwards. Change of direction is critical when your team is on the transition from defense to offense, or vice versa. That makes being able stop, turn or pivot on a dime and quickly accelerate out of a start position as much a key to being a good skater as straight-ahead speed. Work hard to improve your skating when you can!
THE IMPORTANCE OF PASSING Pay attention to your passing. Nothing moves the puck up ice quicker than a tape-to-tape pass. A good passing team is able to maintain possession of the puck for long stretches, putting itself in position to generate more offense. What separates the great passers from the good ones is not only are they able to deliver the puck to a teammate when he or she is wide open, but they are able to use the boards and make area passes to teammates in traffic. “Practice perfect passing.”

GET TO THE NET Everybody has probably heard the saying ‘good things happen when you go to the net.’ There is a good reason for that — everything happens there. When you have a chance to shoot, get the puck on net. You also have to make sure that you physically go to the net so that way you are there for tips, rebounds and screens — all plays that lead directly to goals.
WORK HARD AND HAVE FUN We all want to be the best players we can be and help our team win each time we step on the ice. The easiest way to achieve this — WORK HARD EVERY TIME you step on the ice because work ethic is a huge key to being a successful hockey player. Just as important as working hard is ENJOYING THE GAME. Hockey is just that — a game — which means it is something we do to entertain ourselves. When you are having fun on the ice, chances are good that you are playing your best.
DID I MENTION HOW IMPORTANT SKATING IS?

PITTSBURGH BECOMING A HOCKEY HOTBED

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania might not have a fancy nickname like ‘Hockeytown’, nor is it located in “The State of Hockey” — which is one of Minnesota’s unofficial nicknames for those of you scoring at home — but over the last decade, the ‘Steel City’ has cemented its status as one of the rising hotbeds of the hockey universe. Less than a decade ago, that statement would have been nearly impossible to believe. As the sweltering summer heat swept through our region in 2005, 2005 NHL DRAFT the NHL was in the final stages of wrapping up a lockout that cost the league the entire ’04-05 campaign. Locally, the Penguins were coming off a NHL-worst 58-point season in the year preceding the lockout, and local amateur hockey numbers were in sharp decline. Those fortunes changed with the fortuitous bounce of a ping-pong ball on July 22, 2005 — a stoke of luck that delivered wonderkid Sidney Crosby to the black-and-gold. In the blink of an eye, Evgeni Malkin joined the fold and the duo quickly transformed an up-andcoming team into Stanley Cup champions by 2009. The on-ice and box office success achieved by the Penguins since the arrival of Crosby and Malkin has increased hockey’s profile in Pittsburgh tenfold. Before Crosby’s debut in October 2005, Pittsburgh didn’t have much of a presence within the hockey world outside of legendary Hall of Fame owner Mario Lemieux, who was winding down his illustrious career. Sure, Upper St. Clair native Ryan Malone was coming off an impressive 22-goal rookie campaign with his hometown team, RYAN MALONE and Plum’s R.J. Umberger was set to

make an NHL roster for the first time with the cross-state rival Philadelphia Flyers. But at the time, despite the talents each displayed, both seemed more like exceptions rather than trendsetters. While Malone, who helped the Penguins reach the Cup Final in ’08 before departing R.J. UMBERGER to the Tampa Bay Lightning, and Umberger continue to produce annually on hockey’s grandest stage, the next generation of Pittsburgh-born and trained players continues to make their mark on the hockey world. The dramatic improvement of the Pittsburgh amateur hockey pipeline was showcased at the 2011 NHL Draft in St. Paul, Minnesota, when four of the first 64 selections — J.T. Miller (NY Rangers, 1st round, 15th overall); John Gibson (Anaheim; 2nd round; 39th overall); Brandon Saad (Chicago, 2nd round, 43rd overall); and Vince Trocheck (Florida; 3rd round; 64th overall) — each grew up playing their youth hockey within the local amateur hockey ranks. With his selection at No. 15 overall, Miller became the highest-drafted player ever from the Pittsburgh region, edging out Umberger, who was taken 16th overall by Vancouver in 2001. Gibson was the second goaltender taken in the ’11 draft. Saad, who slipped a bit on draft day after being considered a top-five talent earlier that year, became the first of the quartet to reach the NHL when he made the Blackhawks’ ’1112 opening-night roster. He appeared in two BRANDON SAAD regular-season and two playoff contests with the Hawks, while in between starring for the Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). As good as Saad and Gibson were last year — and First and Third-Team All-OHL honors, respectively, indicate both enjoyed fine seasons — neither was the best Pittsburgh-born player in the OHL.

That honor went to London Knights goaltender — and Wexford native — Michael Houser, who like the four players drafted in ’11 is an alum of the Pittsburgh Hornets ‘AAA’ program. Houser put together one of the finest junior seasons ever while leading the Knights to an OHL playoff championship and a runner-up finish at the Memorial Cup. Houser, who signed an entry-level contract with the Florida Panthers organization during the summer, was named the Canadian Hockey League’s ‘Goaltender of the Year’, won the OHL’s ‘Goaltender of the Year’ award and he became just the third American to win the OHL Most Outstanding Player award after posting a 46-15-0-1 record, 2.47 goals-against average and a .925 save percentage. His 46 wins tied the OHL record. Although Team USA had a disappointing showing at the 2012 World Junior Championship, it is impressive to note that of the 23 players who comprised the Americans’ roster, four (17%) hailed from Western Pennsylvania — Saad, Miller, Gibson and defenseman Stephen Johns, a defenseman from the University of Notre Dame who was selected by Chicago in the second round (60th overall) of the 2010 NHL Draft. This April, the 2013 Frozen Four — college hockey’s version of March Madness — will come to CONSOL Energy Center. If recent Frozen Fours are any indication, there is a good chance somebody from the 412 or 724 area code will factor heavily into determining a champion. That’s because each of the last three winners — Boston College in 2012 and ’10, and Minnesota-Duluth in ’11 — have been buoyed by local contributors. Leading the charge for Boston College at the ’12 Frozen Four was a pair of Mt. Lebanon Blue Devil alums — starting netminder Parker Milner and defenseman Patrick Wey. On their way to leading the Eagles to the title, both players were named to the Northeast Regional All-Tournament Team. Wey, who was drafted by the Washington Capitals in the fourth round (115th overall) of the 2009 NHL Draft, and Milner also played continued on page 183

smaller roles on Boston College’s ’10 championship squad. In between BC’s victories, Plum native Kenny Reiter helped backstop the University of Minnesota-Duluth to a Frozen Four championship over Michigan in ’11 — meaning the winning netminder from the past two national champions has come from Pittsburgh. Young players across our area from mites to high school players to stars at the college and junior level strive each day to become permanent NHL fixtures like Malone and Umberger. Dylan Reese, Mike Weber and Matt Bartkowski are three young defensemen with a sprinkle of NHL experience who appear poised to make that leap in the coming years. The elder statesman of the group is Reese, who like Malone hails from Upper St. Clair and is joining his hometown team this season. Prior to signing with Pittsburgh during the offseason, Reese has played a combined 74 NHL games with the New York Islanders over the past three seasons. Cranberry native Weber has the most experience of the three, suiting up for 132 games with the Buffalo Sabres entering the ’12-13 campaign. A punishing defender, Weber is probably most notorious to DYLAN REESE fans in these parts for not being afraid to mix it up physically with Crosby and Malkin in recent matchups against them. Bartkowski made the opening-night roster for the then-defending Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins last season. The previous spring, he participated in Boston’s march to the Cup as a member of the team’s taxi squad. Ironically, each of Bartkowski’s first three NHL games during the ’10-11 season came at CONSOL Energy Center. As you can see, hockey is alive and well in Pittsburgh at all levels — and that’s without us mentioning the vastly-improved Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL) and the numerous players slated to join the college and junior ranks this coming season. Thanks to the on-ice success of the Penguins translating throughout the local community to children of all ages, hockey is only going to continue growing in these parts well into the future.

ICEBURGH A delight for children of all ages, Iceburgh — the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins not only provides fans with exciting game entertainment but this large, energetic bird can also be seen at a multitude of community events and elementary schools throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. Iceburgh arrived on the scene in 1992 and is a staple at all team events. During Penguins’ home games, fans most definitely notice the antics of Iceburgh leading sections of fans in cheers, greeting young children on the concourse or displaying his athleticism on-ice between periods. In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture “Sudden Death.” He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh wasted no time getting acquainted with his new home at CONSOL Energy Center in September of 2010. You can find Iceburgh sliding down stair banisters, dancing in the stands and tossing t-shirts to fans. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and recently performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. In addition to his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game, Iceburgh makes annual appearances at the Mascot Olympics held in Orlando, FL. If you would like to request an Iceburgh appearance at your next event, please complete the online form by visiting the community section of pittsburghpenguins.com.

LOCAL COLLEGE PROGRAMS EXPERIENCE SUCCESSFUL SEASONS By Brian Zagorac
With the addition of Penn State, there are now three NCAA Division I hockey programs within driving distance of Pittsburgh. Also joining this year was the Johnstown Tomahawks — the only Junior A program in Western Pennsylvania. While all four organizations are young, each experienced success on the ice this past season. The Robert Morris Colonials, although losing in the conference tournament, enjoyed one of their best seasons in existence. RMU finished with a record of 20-14-4; the first 20-win season in program history. The record setting mark is a testament to the progress and overall development of the program under Head Coach Derek Schooley (the only head coach in program history). In only their ninth season in existence, RMU finished fifth in the AHA while boasting the conference’s top scorer in Adam Brace and a goalie in Eric Levine who finished in the top five in wins and save percentage. The Colonials will have 21 players returning next season, setting expectations at an all-time high. Mercyhurst (19-17-5) ended their season on a tough note, losing in the Atlantic Hockey Association championship to Canisius College,

7-2. Senior forward Paul Chiasson and junior defenseman Nick Jones were named to the All-Tournament team after the game. The Lakers only lose four seniors for next year’s squad. In their inaugural NCAA Division I season, the Penn State men’s hockey team welcomed new opponents and said goodbye to an old arena. Finishing with a 13-14 record, the Nittany Lions faced more inseason adversity this year than accustomed to, as they were seven-time national champions while playing at the Division I Club level. This season, however, was headlined by victories against some of the top competition in the NCAA. The Nittany Lions recorded wins against future Big Ten rival Ohio State during the Three Rivers Classic at CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh, a 4-2 win against Vermont in front of over 18,000 people at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia and ended the season with a major upset of perennial NCAA title contender Wisconsin with a 3-2 overtime win. The season provided memorable wins for the graduating seniors and established a strong foundation for the program as they transition to the newly formed Big Ten Hockey Conference next year. The Johnstown Tomahawks inaugural season in the North American Hockey League was one for the record books, as well as the hearts and minds of the people of Johnstown. Despite not having a team to fill the historical War Memorial Arena for the past three years, fans flooded the old barn (average attendance of 2,527) when the Tomahawks set up shop — and for good reason, too. Johnstown finished in fifth place in the North Division and made it to the first round of the playoffs. With a record of 27-21-12, the Tomahawks withstood the trials of being a first year organization while sustaining a successful product on the ice. PENN STATE NITTANY LIONS

“I KNOW WHERE TO GO, AND HOW TO GET THERE, AND IF THE PUCK GETS DELIVERED THERE, EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE I CAN WHACK ONE IN.” ~ Brenden Morrow
PENS PROFILE
BRENDEN MORROW Brenden Morrow certainly knew what to do to win friends and influence people upon arriving in Pittsburgh. Acquired from Dallas on March 24, Morrow’s Penguins debut was two nights later at CONSOL Energy Center against Montreal. The Penguins won 1-0 and Morrow spent much of the evening battling Penguins nemesis P.K. Subban. Morrow hit Subban numerous times and baited him into a penalty. “I heard the boo-birds every time he touched the puck, so I figured he was Public Enemy No. 1,” Morrow said, laughing. The 6-foot, 205-pound left wing doesn’t need an excuse to hit someone. Morrow competes hard, giving no quarter and expecting none. Morrow spent 13 seasons (including most of this one) with the Stars. He has won three gold medals with Canada, including at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. He played in the 2000 Stanley Cup Final with Dallas. Morrow isn’t fancy. He knows his role and performs it well. “There are some dirty areas on the ice that not everybody likes to go to, and I’ve made a living from doing it,” said Morrow, 34. “I know where to go, and how to get there, and if the puck gets delivered there, every once in a while I can whack one in. “Be physical, finish your checks, be aggressive — that opens up the ice for the other guys.” Morrow’s adjustment to the Penguins was less than traumatic thanks to some familiar faces.

[Marc-Andre] Fleury from the Canadian Olympic team [in 2010]. I had some good days with them, too. “Some familiar faces helped me with the transition, and were very ~ Brenden Morrow welcoming as well.” It was definitely a jarring adjustment for Morrow, who had never played for another NHL team besides the Stars. “I had [13] years there, and I’ve seen a lot of good players and teammates leave there and have to go through it. I hadn’t experienced it,” Morrow said. “I’d been there over a decade, and my family is back home, but when I walked into that room, and got welcomed, and put on that Penguins jersey, it made the transition easy. “This is a great opportunity and a great team.” Morrow topped 30 goals twice with Dallas, 20 goals seven times. Morrow is versatile: He can be a top-six forward, or grind as part of a third line. He did both during his salad days in Pittsburgh, skating with Evgeni Malkin and James Neal, then Brandon Sutter and Matt Cooke. When Morrow joined the Penguins, they were on a 12-game win streak, extending it to 13 by beating the Canadiens. “So far, so good,” a chuckling Morrow said afterward. “Everyone’s in a good mood. They know where they want to go. “You had two really good teams, and it was a competitive game. Momentum went back and forth. I know for me, personally, it was all adrenaline and caffeine, because there was a whirlwind of emotion going on in my head for the 24 hours leading up to that game. “It was exciting, it was enjoyable, it was a great experience. Hopefully, things settle down now.” Morrow wore No. 10 in Dallas. That was Tanner Glass’ number with the Penguins, but Glass switched to No. 15 and Dustin Jeffrey to No. 17 so Morrow could claim his usual digits. “I wasn’t really that attached to [No. 10], but I’m very appreciative of Tanner and Dustin doing what they did,” Morrow said. “Very classy.”
“THIS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY AND A GREAT TEAM.”

MATT NISKANEN #AskNiskanen @StaalnAdams1127 @penguins Matt what is your favorite part about being in Pittsburgh and the Penguins organization? #AskNiskanen “A lot of things really. I like the city. The organization is first class. I get to play with some of the best players in the world. We have a great group of guys and great fans.” @28_Holly @penguins What was your “Welcome to Pittsburgh” moment? :) #AskNiskanen “My first game was pretty memorable here. It was something to see and to be on the good side of these Pittsburgh fans is a cool feeling and a cool memory for me.” @BrittanyRenkin @penguins What is your favorite television show? #AskNiskanen “Family Guy, by far. Peter Griffin’s awesome. I can’t get enough of him. I watch him a lot. I think I’ve seen every episode now, so I’m hoping they keep coming up with new ones.” @CrosbysStache @penguins How did the first meeting between you and Sidney go after you got traded? #AskNiskanen “It was interesting. I fought him earlier that season and we had a good laugh about it. When I first got here, there obviously wasn’t any animosity about it. It’s not like I did something in that game that he was [ticked] about or the other way around. It was just Sid being a competitor when we did fight. So, we had a good laugh about it and told all the guys in the room the full story. Then, last year when we went back to Dallas, we had that reenactment in the exact same spot, that was pretty funny. We have a good laugh about that.” @heyitsophe Most embarrassing moment? #AskNiskanen “Probably being late to the plane one of my first trips in Dallas. One of my first road trips, all of the veterans are waiting on the plane and I showed up maybe a few minutes before we supposed to take off and kind of held up the show and I got fined and caught a lot of heat from the older players.” @annieohhdee @penguins Batman or Spiderman? #AskNiskanen “Batman, I’m all about Batman. The movies keep getting better and better, so I can’t wait for the next one.”

THE FROZEN FOUR By: Mike Prisuta
They don’t have a national championship banner between them. That makes this season’s Frozen Four qualifiers relative unknowns, but far from undeserving. Quinnipiac, St. Cloud State, Yale and Massachuetts-Lowell may have combined for only one previous Frozen Four appearance (Yale in 1951-52, when it finished third). But what they accomplished in reaching the CONSOL Energy Center to battle for this season’s national championship April 11-13 has been hard-earned and welldeserved. (The champion had not yet been crowned at press time.) Quinnipiac spent a significant portion of the regular season ranked No. 1 in the nation, a position it occupied in the March 25 edition of the uscho.com Top 20 poll. St. Cloud State blasted Notre Dame and Miami by a combined 9-2 in winning its NCAA Regional. Yale went through Minnesota and North Dakota in its regional, two blueblood programs that boast a combined 12 national championships between them (seven for North Dakota and five for Minnesota). And Massachusetts-Lowell this season became the first school not named Boston College, Boston University, Maine or New Hampshire to win Hockey East’s regular-season championship in Hockey East’s 29-year history. So all four belonged.
