THREE RIVERS CLASSIC PREVIEW:
RMU
By: Mike Prisuta
It’ll be a different Robert Morris team that shows up to play Penn State at the CONSOL Energy Center in the third-annual Three Rivers Classic The Colonials have appeared in the tournament twice previously and won the inaugural event with a 1-0 victory over then-No 5 Miami in December of 2012 But this time they’ll report for work on Dec 29 against the Nittany Lions as a program with NCAA Tournament experience, a distinction RMU earned last season by winning the Atlantic Hockey Association postseason tournament and securing the program’s first invitation to the NCAAs 16-team championship field “We’d had some huge wins in our previous years,” head coach Derek Schooley assessed “We swept Miami when they were No 1 [in January of 2010] We’d beaten Boston University, Notre Dame But you can only go so far with signature wins You had to do it in the playoffs “You just always wondered when we would be able to get it done All the good things we had done, that was the big monkey on our back It was good to get it off It was good to go to the NCAA Tournament and experience that “Now, it gives us the drive to want more I think our guys want to be there all the time We want to be constantly in the discussion as a premier team [in the AHA] Every year we get deeper, bigger, stronger and faster We want to continue to do that “Now, our goal is to get there and not just be there for a quick game against the No 1 team and out ” continued on page 24

continued from page 23
RMU’s NCAA Tournament experience last spring consisted of a 7-3 loss to No. 1-seed Minnesota at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota, in the NCAA West Regional semifinal. The Colonials’ response was to open this season by tying the program Every year we get record with a nine-game deeper, bigger, stronger unbeaten streak (7-0-2) and faster. We want to and by fashioning an 8-1-3 record through their first continue to do that. 12 games. Derek Schooley RMU achieved a No. 17 ranking in the uscho.com Top 20 after sweeping RIT on Oct. 31-Nov. 1, the all-time highest designation in the 11-year history of the program. And the Colonials carried a No. 20 ranking into a 5-5 tie and a 6-0 victory over American International on Nov. 21-22. Robert Morris and Penn State will be joined at the Three Rivers Classic on Dec. 29-30 by Colgate (No. 6 in the Nov. 17 USCHO.com Top 20) and Western Michigan. RMU’s captain is senior winger Cody Wydo, the leading returning goal scorer in the nation entering this season with 65 career goals after registering 31 goals and 54 points in 2013-14. Wydo’s eight goals and 18 points through 12 games this season had him tied for No. 4 nationally in points per game (1.50). The Colonials also boasted two goaltenders ranked in the Top 20 nationally in goals-against average through their first 12 games (sophomore Dalton Izyk, No. 8, 1.72, and junior Terry Shafer, No. 18, 1.95). But the team is as identifiable by its work ethic as it is its skill level, and as recognizable for blocked shots and back-checking as it is timely goals and clutch saves. “Our compete level has been outstanding,” Schooley said. “Everything we’ve been doing has been done through hard work. The base and the foundation of our game have really taken us to a new level. “The [AHA] Final Four in Rochester [N.Y.] was on our bucket list but we’ve crossed that off. The NCAA Tournament was on our bucket list. Now, it’s consistency and making it farther, making it to the second round, making it to the Frozen Four.” continued on page 26

The Colonials are chasing more modest goals initially, such as an AHA regular-season championship and a first-round bye in the conference playoffs But along the way Schooley can appreciate how far the program has already come When he arrived at RMU to prepare for the school’s Division I start-up season in 2004-05, he took up residence in an office at the Charles L Sewall Center, the school’s basketball facility The office contained a desk, a chair and a phone but no computer “It was a nice chair,” Schooley remembered “You could hear the basketballs bouncing around 3 p m when it was time for basketball practice, and that really got in the way of recruiting calls because 3 p m is when kids get out of school and practices are done for junior teams So you’re trying to make recruiting calls and you hear basketballs bouncing off the walls and squeaking sneakers and whistles blowing “I talked to a recruit one time and at the end of the conversation he gave me, ‘Well, it was real nice talking to you Mr Morris ’” Things have changed since then “People know who we are,” Schooley said

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN
Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 16th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including eight straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past seven years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Known as Le Magnifique, Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario and his wife, Nathalie, and their four children live in Sewickley.

RON BURKLE CO-OWNER
Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in technology, retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 16th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for seven-plus seasons. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/ Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award.

DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT
David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Penguins, overseeing every aspect of the team’s operations. Since Morehouse was named President in April, 2007, the Penguins have reshaped their image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010. He reports directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. An emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, has enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.-based NHL teams in local television ratings for five straight seasons. In 2012-13, the Penguins’ rating of 12.66 was the highest achieved by any U.S.-based NHL, NBA or MLB team on a regional sports network since 2002. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins rank among the NHL leaders in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales. Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of the organization’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids ages 5-7 each year. The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He and his wife, Vanessa, have four children and live in Sewickley Heights. For full bios, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 40th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. The cities of Pittsburgh and Philadelphia are both honored to host the second annual NHL Youth Cup December 12-14. The 2014-15 tournament will include one event for each Major birth year (2000, 2002 & 2004) to be hosted by Pittsburgh and one event for each Minor birth year (2001, 2003 & 2005) to be hosted by Philadelphia. The event, presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods, will feature AAA youth hockey programs affiliated with the Carolina Hurricanes, Buffalo Sabres, New York Rangers, New York Islanders, Philadelphia Flyers, Nashville Predators, Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins. Some of the premiere talent playing at the AAA level will compete again for the start of this wonderful tradition amongst NHL-affiliated hockey programs across North America that will continue to grow from year to year. “We think it was a great opportunity for young players in all six age groups to play in an elite-level tournament with other NHL-affiliated programs so early in the season,” said David Morehouse, CEO and President of the Pittsburgh Penguins. “The Penguins Elite program, with generous support from the NHL, was proud to host three age groups and welcome them to Pittsburgh.” All games in Pittsburgh will be held at RMU Island Sports Center over the weekend. For more information please visit NHLYouthCup.com. 87
Thanksgiving in Pittsburgh has yet another busy hockey schedule as the Ninth Annual Pittsburgh Girls Thanksgiving Classic will be played November 28th – 30th. A total of 69 teams and approximately 1,200 participants will be here in Pittsburgh to play hockey over the holiday break. Games will consistently be played over the weekend at RMU Island Sports Center, Iceoplex at Soutpointe, BladerunnersWarrendale and Mt. Lebanon. The classic will be played on the Tier 1 and Tier 2 levels, and has age divisions ranging from U10 up to U19s. The reach of this tournament is evident in that 36 of the 69 teams are from Canada. Pittsburgh is quickly becoming a hot bed for hockey and an arena to showcase women’s hockey across the continent. “This annual Thanksgiving Classic is a great opportunity for our Penguins Elite teams to be able to host such a large hockey tournament in Pittsburgh where younger girls get the chance to compete against some of the best in the area”, says Pittsburgh Penguins Elite Director of Operations Kathy Pippy. “Ten years ago there were no girls’ programs in the region, and today, with the support of the Pittsburgh Penguins and DICK’S Sporting Goods we have grown to develop girls’ teams U10 up to U19. The future is very bright for girls’ hockey in Pittsburgh!” The Thanksgiving tournament continues to grow from year to year and is becoming a great holiday tradition in our area. It also serves as a great platform to showcase our elite women amateur hockey players in the area.

THE RUSH Introduced in the mid 1990’s, the American Eagle Student Rush Program is one of the most popular and well known marketing initiatives of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Designed to sell remaining game-day inventory, the American Eagle Student Rush program provides the Pittsburgh Penguins an opportunity to introduce new fans to the game of hockey at a discounted rate. With many past Student Rush participants now attending games as Pittsburgh Penguins Season Ticket Holders, the program has been successful in developing a long-term relationship with young, active Pittsburghers. During the 2014-15 season, an estimated 200 American Eagle Student Rush tickets will be made available for each regular season home game at CONSOL Energy Center. Eligible students have access to purchase these tickets through an exclusive, day of game, online pre-sale. To receive pre-sale information, students can text RUSH to 32623 to register for the American Eagle Student Rush Mobile Club. Each pre-game text also includes the opportunity to win two free tickets to the next home game! In addition to the 200 tickets offered each game, several games have been designated special Student Rush nights. For these games, at least 500 tickets will be available online! For more information on the American Eagle Student Rush program, the terms and conditions and a schedule of special Student Rush nights, scan the code at the top of the page or visit pittsburghpenguins.com/studentrush. Whether it’s providing exclusive behind-the-scenes access to Coach Mike Johnston’s first training camp or audio from mic’d-up game nights with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, In The Room will once again give fans a unique perspective on the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Emmy award-winning, all-access television show, which debuted during the 2011-12 season, can be seen on ROOT SPORTS in Pittsburgh and the NHL Network, in addition to pittsburghpenguins.com. “The idea of doing our own show developed because of the success of HBO’s 24/7, Road to the Winter Classic in 2010-11,” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse. “We got a lot of positive feedback from our fans about the unbelievable access to players and coaches. With In The Room, we can continue to show fans a side of the team and the sport that they’ve never seen before.” The first-ever episode of In The Room in 2011 chronicled Crosby’s return to the lineup after missing more than 60 games due to injury. The show’s staff followed Malkin to Russia to witness his off-season workouts in his home country, and documented a unique workout session with Kris Letang. continued on page 107

Last season’s content ranged from Pascal Dupuis pulling his own tooth on the bench — which became a social media sensation — to Paul Martin providing all access to his Olympic experience in Sochi. Other highlights included the players’ video game marathon on a long flight to Vancouver; Zach Sill’s memorable on-ice exchanges with the Toronto Maple Leafs; and Olli Maatta’s pre-Olympic shopping trip. “We’re able to do this because of the tremendous cooperation of the Penguins players, coaches and hockey operations staff,”
said Leo McCafferty, executive producer of In The Room. “Obviously, at times, you have to get lucky. We once had a microphone on Geno when he scored a hat trick. We had a mic on Pascal when he pulled out his tooth. But it’s given us an opportunity to take fans where they’ve never been before. The best part is, we never know what we’re going to come across next.”

In 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine expanded the Heads UP Pittsburgh concussion awareness program to include a free flexibility kit to the first 2,000 participants in the new testing period that began on June 16. KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE Free cognitive baseline testing was available on a first-come, first-served basis for athletes ages 10-14. For athletes under 10 years of age, a Pediatric version of the test was available at a minimal cost. Community College of Allegheny County once again served as host to testing at its Boyce, North, South and West Hills Center campuses along with UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side. Community College of Beaver County joined the initiative as a new site for testing and education. The entire testing process takes about one hour. Certified athletic trainers from UPMC Sports Medicine supervise the program and testing. While the athletes are being tested, parents meet with the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion staff to learn about the Heads UP Pittsburgh program and how to handle concussions if they occur. Heads UP Pittsburgh, the first program of its kind and a blueprint copied by other NHL organizations, began in 2011 with baseline testing and parental education programs for youth hockey players. In 2012, the Penguins Foundation expanded the program to include athletes of all sports ages 10 to 14. Since the program’s inception, over 13,000 athletes have been tested and over 33,000 people educated. For more information, please visit the Penguins Foundation website at pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org.

HOCKEY IS FOR
EVERYONE For years Western Pennsylvania youth sports have been dominated by the likes of football, basketball and baseball. Recently however, the region has begun to see a change in preference and participation in sports. Hockey is rapidly becoming the most popular and fastest growing sport in the area. Success seen with the Pittsburgh Penguins on the NHL ice has surely created a demand and a certain excitement around the game, however the popularity of hockey goes well beyond the wins and world class talent the Penguins possess. A genuine love for the game is starting to sweep the area. Kids are beginning to play hockey at younger and younger ages thanks to the Little Penguins: Learn to Play Hockey program. This program will allow 1,000 kids, ages 4-8, to receive free head-to-toe gear all thanks to the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and DICK’S Sporting Goods. Since it began in 2008-09 over 5,200 have been introduced to hockey through this program. The Penguins have also teamed up with the DICK’S Sporting Goods, Trib Total Media and the YMCA to create the YMCA Jr. Penguins program which introduces children to the sport through ball hockey. Each year, over 3,100 children participate in organized ball hockey at local YMCAs. Recently the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered together for Project PowerPlay, which will build 12 dek hockey rinks throughout Allegheny County over a threeyear period and allow local residents to play dek hockey for free. Dek hockey is becoming a great way to learn and play hockey without having ice, and was also vital in the development of current Penguins forward Beau Bennett who grew up in sunny California. continued on page 129

In 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation embarked on a new venture, Tablets in Education. This innovative, new program combined the latest in tablet technology with educational apps and content. With the assistance of the Allegheny Intermediate Unit (AIU3), 60 schools in Allegheny County were selected to participate in the first year of the program; distributing 1,200 Kindle Fire HDX 7 tablets to local schools. Each school enrolled in Tablets in Education received 20 Kindle Fire HDX 7 tablets, a mobile charging station and 20 shock resistant covers. Each device was then loaded with over 50 educational apps, books and specialized content. These apps were carefully selected with the assistance of Common Sense Media and the professionals at the AIU3, providing more than $100,000 worth of content. The devices are designed to be utilized for unique educational programs, extended learning programs and programs for children with disabilities. The technology utilized in Tablets in Education is designed to enhance a child’s academic achievement while continuing to support their social development and relationships with adults and peers through the most critical years of an adolescent’s growth and development. A portion of the funding for this new program was made possible by contributions through the EITC (Educational Improvement Tax Credit) program. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation would like to acknowledge the following organizations for their contributions to Tablets in Education: Kindle Education, B.M. Kramer, Common Sense Media, PNC, CONSOL Energy, Trumbull, Northwest Savings Bank, AE Foundation, PPG and Consolidated Graphic Communications.

ICEBURGH A delight for children of all ages, Iceburgh — the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins not only provides fans with exciting game entertainment but this large, energetic bird can also be seen at a multitude of community events and elementary schools throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. Iceburgh arrived on the scene in 1992 and is a staple at all team events. During Penguins’ home games, fans most definitely notice the antics of Iceburgh leading sections of fans in cheers, greeting young children on the concourse or displaying his athleticism on-ice between periods. In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture Sudden Death. He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh wasted no time getting acquainted with his new home at CONSOL Energy Center in September of 2010. You can find Iceburgh sliding down stair banisters, dancing in the stands and tossing t-shirts to fans. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and recently performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. In addition to his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game, Iceburgh makes annual appearances at the Mascot Olympics held in Orlando, FL. If you would like to request an Iceburgh appearance at your next event, please complete the online form by visiting the community section of pittsburghpenguins.com.

Forward • 1st Round, 22nd Overall Kapanen, the son of former NHL player Sami Kapanen, was the No. 1-ranked European prospect entering the 2014 NHL Draft by Central Registry. During the 2013-14 season, he played professionally for KalPa of the Finnish Elite League where he and Sami were teammates. Beyond the Numbers: Both Kasperi and his father were selected in the NHL Draft by current Penguins GM Jim Rutherford. Sami Kapanen was chosen in the fourth round (87th overall) in the 1995 Draft.
SAM LAFFERTY
Forward • 4th Round, 113th Overall A native of Hollidaysburg, Pa., which is located just outside of Altoona, Lafferty played amateur hockey for the Altoona Trackers of the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL). A graduate of Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts, Lafferty is currently playing college hockey at Brown University. Beyond the Numbers: Although Lafferty’s favorite player growing up was Sidney Crosby, if he had to pick a current Penguins player that he emulates his game after, it would be Brandon Sutter because he is a “responsible, two-way player.” continued on page 153

ANTHONY ANGELLO
Forward • 5th Round, 145th Overall Last season, as a rookie forward with the Omaha Lancers of the United States Hockey League (USHL), Angello placed second among team rookies with 11 goals, while his shooting percentage (14.7%) ranked third overall on the squad. He plans to attend college at Cornell University. Beyond the Numbers: It should come as no surprise that Angello will be attending an Ivy League school because last season he was the co-recipient of the USHL Scholar Athlete Award.
JADEN LINDO
Forward • 6th Round, 173rd Overall As a rookie with the Ontario Hockey League’s Owen Sound Attack in 2012-13, Lindo was named his team’s rookie of the year. Before he suffered a season-ending knee injury last February, he was rated the 96th-best North American prospect by Central Registry. Beyond the Numbers: When Lindo skated for the Toronto Marlboros Minor Midget AAA team in 2011-12, he was teammates with current Erie Otters forward Connor McDavid, who many project to be the top pick in the 2015 NHL Draft.
JEFF TAYLOR
Defenseman • 7th Round, 203rd Overall Helped the Union College Dutch of the ECAC capture the 2014 NCAA Frozen Four National Championship, notching an assist in the semifinal game of the Frozen Four. Taylor led all Union rookie blueliners in scoring with 16 points. Beyond the Numbers: Last season Jeff was named to the ECAC All-Rookie Team as an 18-year-old true freshman.

PENGUINS PROFILE
NICK
SPALING By: Mark Madden
Penguins Coach Mike Johnston likes to pair forwards in sets of two. In mid-November, his three sets were Sidney Crosby-Chris Kunitz, Evgeni Malkin-Patric Hornqvist, and Brandon Sutter-Beau Bennett. Everyone else floats. Nick Spaling floated to a prime spot. Spaling, 26, was manning left wing on a line with Malkin and Hornqvist. Not bad for somebody who has spent much of his career doing bottom-six duty. “[Spaling is] a real versatile player,” Johnston said. “I had him on right wing, left wing and center [in the preseason.] “He’s very good on faceoffs. He’s not a guy that sometimes plays center and struggles with draws. He’s very good in the faceoff circle. With his versatility and penalty-killing ability, he’s a guy that you can move throughout your lineup.” Spaling was ready for his big opportunity. “Obviously, I’ve never played with anyone quite like Geno before,” Spaling said. “It’s exciting for me. But I know I can’t change the way I play the game. I’m just going to keep doing the same things I do, keeping it simple the whole time, so that he always knows where I am. continued on page 162

“You can’t just change the way you play the game because of who you’re out there with. That’s how mistakes happen.” Spaling had three goals and four assists in his first 20 games this season, posting a mark of plus-4. The Ontario native considers versatility a strength. But… “If you ask any forward, he’d love to be a top six,” Spaling said. “I’d like to fit in wherever they have space, but top six is better. “The more playing time you get, the better you feel out there. You’re more part of the game. I don’t mind playing either role.” Malkin spent the beginning of the season playing right wing, then centered Pascal Dupuis and Blake Comeau before moving between Hornqvist and Spaling.
162
Malkin described Hornqvist and Spaling as “two really good players,” then played perhaps his best game of the season Nov. 15 at home vs. the New York Rangers, getting a goal and assist in a 3-2 shootout victory. Spaling assisted on Malkin’s second-period goal, which tied the game 2-2. Spaling, as noted, doesn’t change his game depending on his linemates. But he understands that circumstances dictate. “It’s about playing your game and contributing what the team needs,” said the 6-foot-1, 201-pounder. “There are differences in the roles, and what you’re doing. “The bottom six tends to do a lot more penalty-kill, stuff like that. The top six gets more power-play time and a lot more offensive opportunities. They’re relied on to score goals. The bottom six plays defensively and shuts down the other team. “I definitely want to bring energy to the team. Get things going. Bring the spark. Get the team excited.” Spaling had 13 goals and 19 assists for Nashville last season, both career highs. He and Hornqvist came to Pittsburgh in an off-season trade for James Neal. “I want to keep growing offensively,” Spaling said. “As you get older and [spend time] in the league, your confidence grows. So going forward, it’s definitely a part of the game I want to grow in, and contribute more offensively.” Spaling goes to the net as often as possible. “I’ll take [goals] any way I can get ‘em,” Spaling said. “I had a variety of goals last year. A bunch of different goals. “But I definitely like to be around the [blue] paint. For me, a typical goal would be somewhere around the net, in tight. Getting rebounds and second chances.” Spaling was selected by Nashville in the second round of the 2007 NHL Draft. Getting traded was a shock. “Obviously, with [Nashville] being my first organization, it’s a lot of emotion,” Spaling said. “It’s tough to leave a place where you started your career. At the same time, you’re excited, especially coming to a team like Pittsburgh. “There was talk about me getting traded. When I got the call, and I found out it was Pittsburgh, it was kind of a relief, and then I got excited. I think any player would be happy to get a chance to play in Pittsburgh.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

DUPUIS BLOOD CLOT
BIGGER THAN HOCKEY By: Sam Kasan
It was a tough scene, one that the Pittsburgh Penguins have been a part of on too many occasions the past few years. Pascal Dupuis, fighting back the tears in his eyes and looking dismayed, stood in the media room while the team announced that he was diagnosed with a blood clot in his lung and would be out for at least six months while on blood thinners. “I just didn’t want to believe it,” Dupuis said. “It’s not a great situation to be in, but that’s the card that I’ve been dealt.” This is the same Dupuis that has been a part of the Penguins’ heart and soul since the team acquired him in a trade back in February of 2008. This is the same Dupuis that yanked a tooth out of his mouth in the middle of a game, never missing a shift. This is the same Dupuis that lost half of last season after tearing his ACL and MCL in a freak accident in Ottawa. This is the same Dupuis that worked vigilantly for nine months to return to the ice, and was off to a tremendous start to the season with six goals and 11 points in 16 games. This is the same Dupuis that was struck by a shot in the back of the neck in a game just a week later and lost feeling in his extremities, was taken off the ice on stretcher only to return to the lineup the following contest.
174
But this time it’s different. There’s a real possibility that Dupuis may not play hockey again. “It’s hard for me to answer that question right now,” he said. This is about more than hockey. This is about Dupuis’ life. Though most Penguins fans think of Dupuis as a hockey player, most of his teammates and friends think of him as a father and husband. Dupuis and his wife, Carole-Lyne, have three daughters — Maeva, Zoe and Lola — and one son — Kody. “I’m only thinking about his family right now, what they’re going through,” defenseman Kris Letang said. Letang is no stranger to bizarre health concerns. At the age of 26, Letang, arguably the finest conditioned athlete on the Penguins, suffered a stroke last season. Since then he’s been trying to raise awareness and encouraging people seek medical help if they experience any symptoms regardless of their age. On Sunday, Letang was co-chair of the 2014 Pittsburgh Heart Walk at Heinz Field. And who was there to support him in his efforts? Dupuis and his family, of course. A day later he felt discomfort in his chest. After a battery of tests, the clot was identified. On Sunday, Dupuis stood behind Letang to show his support. On Wednesday it was Letang standing behind Dupuis. “I’m just trying to be here for him and support him the best we can,” Letang said. “It’s unfair, happening to a guy like that. Just bad luck. “I speak for myself, he’s always been there for me since the day he joined the team. He’s been a [role] model, older-guy that I looked at. He’s a great guy in the dressing room. Everybody loves him. He’s one of our big leaders. The least we could do was to be here.” Letang was joined by Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Sidney Crosby and Chris Kunitz. The five team leaders stood off to the side during the press conference. All wanted to be there for their teammate and friend. continued on page 177

continued from page 175
The rest of the Penguins team were only notified of Dupuis’ situation 15 minutes before the media conference began. Otherwise, there’s no doubt that every single player on the Penguins’ roster would have been in that room for Dupuis. Dupuis’ leadership, character and personality were missed last season after he suffered his knee injury. Dupuis’ absence will be felt once again this time around. “[He’s] the guy on the planes and hanging out at dinner, making fun of situations when we aren’t feeling as confident as we need to as a group,” Kunitz said. “That’s the friendship part of what Duper brings to the team, the leadership stuff.” There are moments when something happens that transcends the sport of hockey. This is one of those moments, where life reminds us of its fragility. Unfortunately for the Penguins, there have been constant reminders. Crosby suffered through two seasons with a concussion and head injuries. Tomas Vokoun was diagnosed with a blood clot in September, 2013. Letang suffered from a stroke in January. And just two weeks ago Olli Maatta had a cancerous tumor surgically removed from his neck. And now Dupuis. Dupuis has battled through so much in the past year. There’s no doubt that Dupuis will battle through this situation. And as long as his health permits, Dupuis will fight his way, once again, back into the Penguins lineup. “He’s strong,” Sidney Crosby said. “I’m sure he’ll find a way to get through it.”

THREE BRITS MAKE PILGRIMAGE TO PENGUINS’ GAMES By: Joey Sykes
When asked about their favorite sport, the typical Brit would usually respond saying they enjoy rugby, cricket or soccer (O.K. football). But Simon Brown, Phil Lee and James Bird aren’t typical Brits. They enjoy ice hockey, primarily Pittsburgh Penguins ice hockey. Brown, 30, Lee, 23, and Bird, 24, are some of the Penguins’ biggest fans that hail from across the pond. Over the past years, they have followed the team in the standings and throughout the postseason. Now the trio is getting to experience firsthand what it’s like to see their favorite club play live. “It was up and down then up and down again,” Brown said. “But it really has been a fun trip. I am happy to have come with these guys. It’s an experience like no other.” The men are in town till November 30 scoping out the local Pittsburgh scene, but their mainly here to see their beloved Pens in action against the New York Islanders, Carolina Hurricanes and Toronto Maple Leafs. It’s a pretty interesting story as to how the three ended up as friends. Brown, who currently lives in Spain, has been an avid hockey fan since he was a kid when he was playing NHLPA ’93 on the Sega Genesis. When it came to him picking a team in the game, Brown liked that there was a club named after his favorite animal, which was the tuxedo-clad bird. Stemming from his love of video games, Brown first met Lee while playing another NHL video game online, which is where they would befriend Bird too. After getting to know each other over the course of a few months, the three decided a trip to Pittsburgh should happen. “I met them online playing in the EA Sports Hockey League and it was funny that all three of us liked the Penguins being from England,” Bird said. “After a while we all just came to a consensus that we should go to a game.” The three are also a part of the British Penguins Fan Club, which is a social-media based group for fans of the U.K. Brown, who just turned 30, was wearing his British Penguins Fan Club hoodie. So far, Lee seems to have enjoyed his trip the ‘Burgh as well. “I love it here,” Lee said. “Coming through the tunnel and seeing the skyline was wonderful. The people are so nice and everyone seems to enjoy talking to you. It’s definitely something I’ll never forget.”

AROUND THE NHL By: Mike Prisuta
NEVER TWO LATE: The Panthers picked an appropriate time to score their fastest two goals of the season. Florida got extra-attacker goals from C Rocco Grimaldi at 19:17 of the third period and from C Nick Bjugstad at 19:29 in what eventually became a 3-2 shootout loss on Nov. 22 at Nashville. The Panthers’ lastminute magic marked just the fourth time since 2006 that a team was able to score twice in the final minute of regulation to tie a game.
CONSISTENT IN PHILLY: Flyers RW Jakub Voracek amassed an NHL-leading 29 points through Philadelphia’s first 19 games (7+22). Voracek had a point in every game in which the Flyers weren’t shut out (Oct. 21 at Chicago, Nov. 19 at the New York Rangers).
THE OLD COLLEGE TRY: Minnesota’s roster this season includes 11 players who played college hockey: D Keith Ballard (Minnesota, 2001-04), D Stu Bickel (Minnesota, 2007-08), C Ryan Carter (Minnesota State, 2004-06), C Charlie Coyle (Boston University, 2010-11), RW Justin Fontaine (Minnesota-

Duluth, 2007-11), C Erik Haula (Minnesota, 2010-13), LW Zach Parise (North Dakota, 200204), D Nate Prosser (Colorado College, 2006-10), D Ryan Suter (Wisconsin, 2003-04), LW Thomas Vanek (Minnesota, 2002-04) and LW Jason Zucker (Denver, 2010-12).
RECORDTYING ISLES: The Islanders tied a franchise record by winning 14 of their first 20 games (14-6-0). New York also accomplished the feat in 1976-77, 1977-78, and 1987-88. This year’s 14-of-20 start included an 8-1-0 record in 1-goal games (3-1-0 in regulation) and a mark of 12-1-0 when scoring at least three goals (including shootout winners).
RELIABLE RANGER: LW Rick Nash (13+7) had points in 14 of the Rangers’ first 19 games. Nash emerged from that span first in the NHL in games with a goal (11), second in even-strength goals (10), third in goals (13), tied for third in takeaways (21) and tied for 10th in even-strength points (25). Nash is only player in the NHL with an active streak of 10 consecutive 20-goal seasons.

PENGUINS AND FANS HELP TO
SCORE AGAINST HUNGER FOR THANKSGIVING The 23rd annual Score Against Hunger Food Drive presented by CONSOL Energy took place on November 1 before the Pittsburgh Penguins faced the Buffalo Sabres at the CONSOL Energy Center. Fans were encouraged to open their hearts, pantries and wallets to make a difference in the fight against hunger. Food and monetary donations were accepted by the Penguins Booster Club at all CONSOL Energy Center gates prior to the start of the game. The Score Against Hunger Food Drive presented by CONSOL Energy benefitted the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and food donations will be distributed to needy people within our region. 2 million pounds of food every month through their network of member agencies and direct distribution programs, such as soup kitchens, shelters, after school programs and Meals on Wheels. As a result of Penguins fans generosity, this year’s drive produced over 971 pounds of food and $1,420 in cash donations. Since 1992, the team’s food drives have collected over 36,970 pounds of food and more than $34,400. After practice on November 20, three Penguins players continued an eightyear tradition by distributing turkeys, plus a variety of vegetables, to 100 deserving families at the Hill House’s Kaufmann Auditorium in the Hill District. American-born players Beau Bennett, Paul Martin and Rob Scuderi happily volunteered to distribute food and make the Thanksgiving holiday a little brighter for many families in our community. Each family was preselected by the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank to receive a turkey, potatoes (regular and sweet), stuffing, yams, carrots and cranberry sauce to make their Thanksgiving meal complete. The Pittsburgh Penguins, Penguins Foundation and CONSOL Energy extend their sincere thanks and gratitude to all fans who contributed to the ongoing success of the team’s annual food drive and helped to make this Thanksgiving holiday brighter for many local families.

2014.15 NHL
RULES CHANGES nhl.com
RULE 1.8
RINK - GOALKEEPER’S RESTRICTED AREA The trapezoid will be expanded by two feet from the goal post on both sides of the net.
RULE 23
GAME MISCONDUCT PENALTIES A new Game Misconduct category will be created. Clipping, charging, elbowing, interference, kneeing, head-butting and butt-ending move from the general category into the same category as boarding and checking from behind (Physical Fouls), whereby a player who incurs two such game misconducts in this category would now be automatically suspended for one game.
RULE 24
PENALTY SHOT The Spin-O-Rama move, as described in Section 24.2 of the 2013-14 NHL Rule Book, will no longer be permitted either in Penalty Shot situations or in the Shootout.
RULE 38
VIDEO GOAL JUDGE Video review will be expanded in the following areas: * Rule 38.4 (viii) has been modified to allow broader discretion to Hockey Operations to assist the referees in determining the legitimacy of all potential goals (e.g., to ensure they are good hockey goals). The revised Rule will allow Hockey Operations to correct a broader array of situations where video review clearly establishes that a goal or no goal call on the ice has been made in error. The new expanded rule will also allow Hockey Operations to provide guidance to referees on goal and potential goal plays where the continued on page 198
197
continued from page 197
referee has blown his whistle (or intended to blow his whistle) after having lost sight of the puck. * In reviewing Kicked in Goals, Hockey Operations will require more demonstrable video evidence of a distinct kicking motion in order to overrule a goal call on the ice, or to uphold a no goal call on the ice.
RULE 57 TRIPPING
The rule relating to Tripping will be revised to specifically provide that a two minute minor penalty will be assessed when a defending player dives and trips an attacking player with his body/arm/shoulder, regardless of whether the defending player is able to make initial contact with the puck. But, in situations where a penalty shot might otherwise be appropriate, if the defending player dives and touches the puck first (before the trip), no penalty shot will be awarded. (In such cases, the resulting penalty will be limited to a two-minute minor penalty for tripping.)
RULE 76 FACE-OFFS
To curb delay tactics on face-offs after icing infractions, in situations where the defending team is guilty of a face-off violation, following an icing, the defending player who is initially lined up for the face-off will be given a warning, but will be required to remain in the circle to take the face-off. A second face-off violation by the defending team in such situation will result in a two minute minor bench penalty.
RULE 64
DIVING / EMBELLISHMENT The supplementary discipline penalties associated with Rule 64.3 (Diving/Embellishment) will be revised to bring attention to and more seriously penalize players (and teams) who repeatedly dive and embellish in an attempt to draw penalties. Fines will be assessed to players and head coaches on a graduated scale. continued on page 201

RULE 84 OVERTIME
* Teams will switch ends prior to the start of overtime in the regular season. * The entire ice surface will undergo a dry scrape prior to the start of overtime in the regular season. * The procedure requiring the head coach to submit a list of the first three shooters in the shoot-out has been eliminated.
RULE 85
PUCK OUT OF BOUNDS There have been further rule changes made relating to face-off location to avoid penalizing teams for plays intended to create bona fide scoring opportunities. Specifically, the following are categories of plays where face-offs will remain in the attacking zone despite the fact that the attacking team was technically responsible for the stoppage in play: Shots at the net by a player on the attacking team where: (i) the shot breaks the glass; (ii) the shot goes off the side of the net and deflects out of play; (iii) the shot goes off the dasher boards or glass and deflects out of play; (iv) the shot is tipped or deflected out of play by a teammate; and (v) the shot becomes wedged in or on the exterior of the goal net. In addition, the following rule change will be enacted for the 2014 preseason and may be continued for the 2014-15 regular season if approved by the League and the NHLPA.
RULE 1.9
RINK – FACE-OFF SPOTS AND CIRCLES – ICE MARKINGS/HASH MARKS The hash marks at the end zone circles will be moved from three feet apart to five feet, seven inches apart (international markings).
