SEASON TICKET HOLDER SPOTLIGHT

MICHAEL LEONARD

Hometown: Pittsburgh, PA Season Ticket Location: 118, G, 11-12 First Season as a Penguins Season Ticket Holder: 2006

WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO BECOME A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS SEASON TICKET HOLDER? When my Aunt Kim babysat me growing up, we would watch hockey and bake apple pies. My name being Michael, she would use Mike Lange’s signature “Michael Michael Motorcycle” goal call from time to time. After I graduated college in 2004, I was working the four to midnight shift. I attended many student rush games back when Milan Kraft, Rico Fata and Kris Beech were leading the black and gold. I told my then fiancée, Lisa, that I wanted to get Penguins season tickets. The day I accepted a new eight to four job, I purchased a half season to the Penguins. WITH WHOM DO YOU ATTEND PENGUINS HOME GAMES? I go to Penguins games with many people, but my wife, Lisa, is the main person. Of course, my Aunt Kim that introduced me to hockey attends several games with me each year. She likes the old guys like Gary Roberts and Billy Guerin. HAVE YOU EVER ATTENDED A PENGUINS AWAY GAME? I have seen the Penguins play several places. They are undefeated on the road when I am in attendance. I keep trying to get someone to pay for me to go on the road to watch the team. I have my tickets to see them in California this year against the Ducks and Kings. continued on page 6

5

continued from page 5

AS A SEASON TICKET HOLDER, WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST CHERISHED PENGUINS MEMORY? The moment I remember most is what some have dubbed “The Shift.” Brooks Orpik laid out several Red Wings during the 2008 Stanley Cup Final right in front of where my seats were. The crowd went nuts.

Michael and his wife, Lisa.

DO YOU OWN PITTSBURGH PENGUINS MEMORABILIA OR CONSIDER YOURSELF TO BE A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS MEMORABILIA COLLECTOR? I collect as many bobbleheads as possible. I have several of them signed by Evgeni Malkin, Mark Recchi, Marc-Andre Fleury, Jordan Staal and Colby Armstrong. My most prized possession is an autographed picture of Jaromir Jagr taken in Kladno in the uniform of the team he owns. My Aunt Kim has several autographed pictures of all the great Czech Penguins players. My grandmother was friends with a Czech lady, Vera, that used to babysit my mother and aunts. Vera was friends with Jagr’s mother. AS A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS SEASON TICKET HOLDER, WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE PROMOTIONAL GIVEAWAY AND/OR EVENT? I always enjoy Shirts Off Our Backs. My Aunt Kim usually goes with me. I have an agreement with her that if I get picked for one of her old guys, she can go on the ice and get the jersey from the player. However, she will still give me the jersey to keep. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE IN-GAME ENTERTAINMENT FEATURE? It is probably a tie between the cowbell and Cotton-Eyed Joe. No matter how many times the crazy guy with the beard is shown he is funny to watch.

GAME

NOTES By: Bob Grove

THE SERIES [VS] BLUE JACKETS

This afternoon the Penguins host the Columbus Blue Jackets for the second and final time this season. The teams played here just 10 days ago, when Brandon Dubinsky’s short-handed goal with 2:17 remaining gave the Jackets a 2-1 victory. Scott Hartnell and Evgeni Malkin had traded goals earlier in the game. . . Columbus also defeated the Penguins, 4-3 in a shootout, in Columbus on Dec. 13. Kris Letang had two goals in the final 13 minutes of that game, forcing overtime with a goal at 19:49. . . The Penguins had won six consecutive regular season games against Columbus prior to those two games and are 10-2-2 in their last 14 regular season games against the Jackets. . . The teams will conclude the season series in Columbus on April 4, another afternoon game. . . Sidney Crosby, who missed the first game against Columbus this season with the mumps, was held off the scoresheet for the first time in 11 games against the Jackets in the Feb. 19 matchup. He has five goals and 17 points in 12 career games against Columbus. . . Columbus has missed on 13 straight continued on page 10

regular season power play chances here in Pittsburgh since Fedor Tyutin beat Marc-Andre Fleury on Feb. 6, 2009. . . Fleury has allowed six goals in his last four regular season starts against Columbus. . . The Feb. 19 game also featured a fight between Dubinsky and Crosby, the seventh fight of Crosby’s career and first since he dropped the gloves against the Flyers’ Claude Giroux in the 2012 playoffs. . . Pittsburgh has lost two of the three shootouts between the teams, all of which have taken place in Columbus. . . Malkin has points in all nine career games against Columbus (4+7), with all four goals coming here in Pittsburgh. . . Dubinsky has 10 goals and 23 points in 39 career games against the Penguins. . .Tyutin assisted on both Jackets’ goals in the win here last month. . . The Penguins are 14-5-2 all-time against Columbus, including a 7-3-0 mark here at home. . . The Jackets were hoping to have injured goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky back in the lineup for this game. He was injured in late January.

THE PENGUINS

The Penguins have played only one game in the last six days coming into this afternoon’s game. After posting back-to-back wins in St. Louis (4-2) Feb. 21 and here against Florida (5-1) Feb. 22, the Penguins’ only game was at Washington last Wednesday. They will have two days off after this game and then begin a four-game road trip that takes them to Colorado (March 4), Anaheim (March 6), Los Angeles (March 7) and San Jose (March 9). Pittsburgh’s next home game is March 12 against Edmonton. . . The Penguins play 15 games continued on page 13

in March. . . Malkin and Patric Hornqvist had two goals each in the victory over Florida, Hornqvist getting one goal on the power play. . . The NHL trade deadline is tomorrow. . . After the victory over Florida defenseman Rob Scuderi was just two games away from his 700th NHL game. . . Crosby began last week just three points behind Chicago’s Patrick Kane for the NHL scoring lead, while Malkin was just six points off the lead. . . Letang was eighth in the NHL in average ice time per game (25:31) and shared the NHL scoring lead among defensemen with Calgary’s Mark Giordano (47 points). . . After the win over the Panthers, Crosby was leading all forwards in points-per-game at 1.09, while Letang was leading all defensemen in the same statistic (0.87). . . Pittsburgh had allowed two or fewer goals in seven of its last 10 games before facing the Capitals. Fleury had allowed two or fewer goals in seven consecutive starts at that point. . . Fleury lost his bid for a ninth shutout this season when Scottie Upshall of Florida scored with 7:37 left, marking the 13th time in Fleury’s career that he lost a shutout in the final eight minutes of regulation. . . The Penguins were hoping to have defenseman Christian Ehrhoff back in the lineup this week. Ehrhoff had missed 12 games with a concussion before Pittsburgh played in Washington. . . Pittsburgh had attempted more shots than its opponent in 11 of the last 15 games (+101) before facing Washington.

ANOTHER STEP

FORWARD By: Mike Prisuta

Perhaps the defining characteristic of the 2014-15 Robert Morris Colonials was revealed when the clinching of the first conference championship in the program’s 11-year NCAA Division I history was embraced with a celebration that fell noticeably short of elation. The Colonials secured the Atlantic Hockey Conference regularseason title with a 4-3 victory on Feb. 20 at RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology Tigers.) RMU rallied from a 3-1 deficit and then broke a 3-3 third-period tie with 10 seconds remaining in regulation on captain Cody Wydo’s 19th goal of the season. Not long thereafter, the Colonials continued looking ahead. “The bench was extremely excited when Wydo scored that goal,” head coach Derek Schooley acknowledged. “And I think our [postgame] embrace around the goaltender was a little longer, maybe. “Guys knew what we had accomplished and they were happy with it. I congratulated them and basically told them what an accomplishment it was. But then we talked about how this didn’t accomplish our ultimate goal of making the NCAA Tournament and about how we still have games to play.” continued on page 24

23

continued from page 23

The Colonials played their final two regular-season games on Friday night at Niagara University and on Saturday night at the RMU Island Sports Center’s 84 Lumber Arena against those same Purple Eagles. And now their pursuit of that ultimate goal begins in earnest. To qualify for a second consecutive NCAA Tournament, Robert Morris will have to win Atlantic Hockey’s playoff tournament, as it did last season. The league title this season earned for the Colonials a firstround bye this weekend and then a best-of-three, second-round series on March 13–15 at home. After that, hopefully, it’ll be on to Rochester, N.Y., and the AHC Final Four, being held on March 20–21 at Blue Cross Arena. The team that wins two games there will secure the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA’s 16-team championship event. Emerging with the conference tournament crown and earning the program’s first NCAA Tournament bid last season changed the expectations at Robert Morris, but not the ultimate goals. “It’s our expectation to win our league and get to the [NCAA] Tournament every year,” junior Zac Lynch, of Shaler, maintained. Steps taken toward that end this season included an overall record of 21-6-5 entering that final regular-season weekend against Niagara. The 21 wins established a program single-season record for RMU, which had been ranked No. 19 in the USCHO.com Top 20 prior to the title-clinching series at RIT. continued on page 26

RMU was also fourth in the nation in wins prior to the regularseason concluding home-and-home series with Niagara (behind Michigan Tech’s 24, Minnesota State’s 23 and North Dakota’s 22) and fourth nationally in winning percentage (.734). The accomplishments in the second half of last season and this season have changed perceptions of, as well as expectations for, a program that had gone 38-12-8 from We really got used Jan. 4, 2014 through 32 games this season. to winning and that’s “Six years ago I would something you don’t go and talk to recruits and say, ‘Hey, I’m from want to give up. Robert Morris,’ and the Chase Golightly common question from coaches and players was, ‘Are you guys Division I?’” associate head coach Matt Nicholson reported. “You’d kind of have to bite your tongue and reply ‘yes, we are.’ “Now, everyone knows.” Especially RMU’s players, who will enter the postseason this season bolstered by a collective confidence the likes of which the program hasn’t previously experienced. “We’re just overall an outstanding team,” Lynch said. “From having two goaltenders [Dalton Izyk and Terry Shafer] that could be starters on any team stepping in every night; our freshmen came in ready to play, they really filled in as go-to guys right off the bat on defense and on offense. “Our depth is tough to beat. I would hate to play us. Lines one through four and all of our ‘D’ pairs are tough to play against.” No wonder this season’s AHC regular-season title was perceived as merely another step forward on RMU’s journey. “I think going as far as we did last year, guys really got a taste for it,” defenseman Chase Golightly said. “We really got used to winning and that’s something you don’t want to give up. “After you know how fun it is to win like that you want to keep that rolling so I think we came back with the mentality that we were going to win right off the bat. You can never get satisfied with winning and it just kind of rolled through that.” The Colonials’ expectation is that the fun is just getting started.

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 16th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including eight straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past seven years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Known as Le Magnifique, Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario and his wife, Nathalie, and their four children live in Sewickley.

RON BURKLE CO-OWNER

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in technology, retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 16th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for seven-plus seasons. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/ Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award.

DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT

David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Penguins, overseeing every aspect of the team’s operations. Since Morehouse was named President in April, 2007, the Penguins have reshaped their image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010. He reports directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. An emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, has enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.-based NHL teams in local television ratings for five straight seasons. In 2012-13, the Penguins’ rating of 12.66 was the highest achieved by any U.S.-based NHL, NBA or MLB team on a regional sports network since 2002. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins rank among the NHL leaders in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales. Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of the organization’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids ages 5-7 each year. The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He and his wife, Vanessa, have four children and live in Sewickley Heights. For full bios, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

Making a splash!

Of all the coatings, paints and stains we’ve made in our 130-year history, two colors stand out among the rest: Black and Gold. Our Pittsburgh roots run deep, and so does our commitment to giving back to the place we call home. And because we bring innovative coatings and glass products to CONSOL Energy Center, we’re proud to be a part of every game. To see what other winning color formulas we’re bringing to the surface, visit ppg.com.

MIKE LANGE

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 40th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

PHIL BOURQUE

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK COLOR ANALYST

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 12th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has cohosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

61

BOB GROVE

STUDIO HOST — PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK

After a 17-year career as the Penguins beat writer for the Washington Observer-Reporter, Bob Grove joined the team’s radio broadcasts in 1998 as a frequent studio host/co-host and is now in his seventh season as full-time host of the pre- and post-game broadcasts and intermissions on the Penguins Hockey Network. Grove wrote Pittsburgh Penguins: The Official History of the First 30 Years in 1997 and has contributed game notes to GOAL Magazine inserts or IceTime programs for every Pittsburgh home game since 1986. He was also a contributor to the second edition of Total Hockey and to The Game I’ll Never Forget. He is a senior writer covering hockey for the Pittsburgh Sports Report and also hosts Bob Grove’s Hot Stove on Penguins Radio 24/7.

STEVE KOLBE

PENGUINS RADIO 24/7 HOST— PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK

Steve Kolbe enters his second season with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Kolbe spent 14 seasons (1997-2011) as the play-by-play broadcaster for the Washington Capitals, broadcasting over 1,100 games. His voice has been heard internationally on the NHL Network, XM Radio, NHL Radio, and ESPN. Kolbe broadcast the Stanley Cup Finals in 1998 and the NHL Winter Classic in 2011, and he was featured on the NHL Network’s documentary Voices in 2008. A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Kolbe has over 25 years of broadcasting experience, and most recently has been a co-host of the Mid-Atlantic Sports Report on MASN (Mid Atlantic Sports Network) as well as talk show host for Major League Baseball coverage and NHL insider on CBS Radio 105.7 in Baltimore. CONSOL Energy Center IN FIFTH YEAR TO PRESENT

HMK

MORE TOP TOURS, EVENTS By: Pam Thompson

PERM

CONSOL Energy Center — now in its fifth year of hosting entertainment for every sort of audience — will present more top tours and banner sporting events in the future. The New Year will bring the Maroon 5 World Tour 2015 and the Second and Third Rounds of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship to CONSOL Energy Center. The Pittsburgh arena’s reputation for hosting major sporting events will continue. The Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Basketball Championship will be contested in CONSOL Energy Center in 2017, the A-10 announced in September. Bernadette V. McGlade, A-10 Commissioner, says, “The opportunity to rotate our championship within the A-10 footprint is exciting. She adds that CONSOL Energy Center is a state-of-the-art venue with great fan amenities and a successful history of hosting NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship events. Commenting on the significance of having a facility like CONSOL Energy Center in the community, Craig Davis, President and CEO of VisitPITTSBURGH, says: “Pittsburgh is at the top of its game when it comes to sports, and CONSOL has been the linchpin for our success in attracting national events such as USA Gymnastics P&G Championships, NCAA Men’s Frozen Four and NCAA Men’s Basketball Championships. Combined with Penguins games and the fact that it is a top-performing concert venue in terms of sales, this building and AEG have been invaluable in terms of providing visibility and economic impact to the Pittsburgh region. “ Davis adds, “Sports events are an ever-growing opportunity within the tourism industry. The market segment is 25 percent of our convention sales team’s bookings. Having CONSOL Energy Center is key to the arsenal of facilities we can offer when bidding on large sporting events in our region.” continued on page 76

There is no limit

Home of the to the types of Pittsburgh Penguins and entertainment the Pittsburgh Power, and concerts at CONSOL Energy CONSOL Energy Center Center. has annually hosted the Three Rivers Classic of men’s collegiate hockey, the second annual CCM/ USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game in 2013, and the NHL Draft in 2012. In addition to sporting events, well over 300 performances took place at CONSOL Energy Center in its first four Paul McCartney years of operation. Leading the eclectic parade of entertainers performing for CONSOL Energy Center audiences, Paul McCartney, the inaugural act on August 18, 2010, sold out his first show so quickly that a second performance was added for the next night. After winning five Grammy Awards earlier this year, McCartney came back to CONSOL Energy Center in July with his universally acclaimed “Out There” tour and played for another sold-out crowd. In his most recent appearance, McCartney sang and played his way through his ambitious set list and two encores, performing some 40 songs with dedications to his wife, Nancy, his late wife, Linda, the civil rights demonstrators of the ‘60s, his dad and Ringo Starr for their birthdays that coincided with the concert, as well as John Lennon and George Harrison. There is no limit to the types of entertainment and concerts appearing on CONSOL Energy Center stages. Concerts — rock, pop, doo wop, Christian, country and more — have included One Direction, Lady Gaga, Donnie and Marie Osmond, Foo Fighters, Casting Crowns, Katy Perry, Barry Manilow, Black Keys, Carrie Underwood, Drake, the “Justins” — Bieber and Timberlake, Arcade Fire, Wiz Khalifa, Bruno Mars, Usher, Miley Cyrus, Michael Bublé, Andre Rieu, Hillsong United, Josh Groban, TobyMac, New Kids on the Block, Chris Tomlin and Celtic Woman. 6th annual readers’ survey named CONSOL Energy Center the best NHL arena. • It won the National “Hall of Headlines” award from Venues Today magazine. • Its Box Office was nominated for “Box Office of the Year” by the International Ticketing Association. • The Master Builders’ Association (MBA) top prize for Best New Construction in the category over $10 Million was awarded to PJ Dick Incorporated for its role as construction manager on CONSOL Energy Center. • On the environmental front, CONSOL Energy Center was a nominee for the Sustainability Award at the International Business Awards in Barcelona, Spain in 2011. • The building won the Green Power: Turn It On! Award from PennFuture. • CONSOL Energy Center was honored as the most innovative energy efficient glass project in Glass Magazine’s Crystal Achievement Awards. CONSOL Energy Center claims the most comfortable seating arrangement in the NHL — seats up to 24 inches wide, with an accompanying increase in legroom. The center also provides ADA accessibility, family restrooms and guest services locations on all seating levels, as well as 12 escalators — that’s 10 more than at the Civic Arena. In addition to entertainment and sporting events, the arena’s main floor, suites, dining facilities and common areas are used for fundraisers and countless private functions. This year, CONSOL Energy Center hosted the Hillman Cancer Center Gala for the fourth time. It is the venue for the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation’s annual signature fundraisers -- Skates & Plates and the Wine Tasting Gala. The venue also has hosted the Pens Foundation’s scholarship winners and students attending its Explorer Series, CONSOL Energy’s Community All-Stars recognition programs, and Check Your Heart screenings. All of these activities contribute to making CONSOL Energy Center a busy Elton John place all year round.

REFLECTING ON THE

MIRACLE ON ICE By Michelle Crechiolo

Fans across the country celebrated the sport of hockey during the eighth It has been Annual Hockey Weekend Across an incredible America, which began on Friday, 35 years... Feb. 20 with the theme of Wear Your Favorite Jersey, continued on Saturday Mike Eruzione with Try Hockey and concluded Sunday, Feb. 22 with Celebrate Local Hockey Heroes. It was a fun three days, but it’s crazy to think that events like Hockey Weekend Across America may not exist if it weren’t for the Miracle on Ice that took place 35 years ago. “It has been an incredible 35 years from my standpoint,” said the captain of Team USA, Mike Eruzione. “I think where hockey has come now, I’ve said many times — in ’80 we might have opened the door and today’s players have knocked the door down. It’s great to see the success of our programs going into tournaments as one of the favorites, not just a country that has a chance. We’re a country that can compete at the level of all the world powers, men and women, so it’s great to see.” On Sunday, Feb. 22, 1980, the U.S. Olympic men’s hockey team — which consisted of a bunch of college kids handpicked by legendary USA Hockey head coach Herb Brooks — shocked the world by beating the Soviet Union, 4-3, at the tournament in Lake Placid. It’s one of the greatest upsets in all of sports history, as the Americans had been given virtually no chance against the mighty Russians, a veteran team — a machine — who had dominated international hockey for years and had beaten Team USA, 10-3, in an exhibition game the week before. It was a moment that meant so much to a country who was looking for something to feel good about, as they were in the midst of a lengthy hostage crisis in Iran and an oil shortage that forced the government to ration gas. “All across the United States, people come up to me with a story to tell,” Eruzione said. “It’s usually, ‘I remember where I was when Kennedy was assassinated, I remember where I was when the Challenger blew up, I remember where I was on 9-11 and then I remember where I was when we won.’” The story continues at pittsburghpenguins.com

Whether it’s providing exclusive behind-the-scenes access to Coach Mike Johnston’s first training camp or audio from mic’d-up game nights with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, In The Room will once again give fans a unique perspective on the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Emmy award-winning, all-access television show, which debuted during the 2011-12 season, can be seen on ROOT SPORTS in Pittsburgh and the NHL Network, in addition to pittsburghpenguins.com. “The idea of doing our own show developed because of the success of HBO’s 24/7, Road to the Winter Classic in 2010-11,” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse. “We got a lot of positive feedback from our fans about the unbelievable access to players and coaches. With In The Room, we can continue to show fans a side of the team and the sport that they’ve never seen before.” The first-ever episode of In The Room in 2011 chronicled Crosby’s return to the lineup after missing more than 60 games due to injury. The show’s staff followed Malkin to Russia to witness his off-season workouts in his home country, and documented a unique workout session with Kris Letang. continued on page 107

Last season’s content ranged from Pascal Dupuis pulling his own tooth on the bench — which became a social media sensation — to Paul Martin providing all access to his Olympic experience in Sochi. Other highlights included the players’ video game marathon on a long flight to Vancouver; Zach Sill’s memorable on-ice exchanges with the Toronto Maple Leafs; and Olli Maatta’s pre-Olympic shopping trip. “We’re able to do this because of the tremendous cooperation of the Penguins players, coaches and hockey operations staff,”

said Leo McCafferty, executive producer of In The Room. “Obviously, at times, you have to get lucky. We once had a microphone on Geno when he scored a hat trick. We had a mic on Pascal when he pulled out his tooth. But it’s given us an opportunity to take fans where they’ve never been before. The best part is, we never know what we’re going to come across next.”

In 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine expanded the Heads UP Pittsburgh concussion awareness program to include a free flexibility kit to the first 2,000 participants in the new testing period that began on June 16. KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE Free cognitive baseline testing was available on a first-come, first-served basis for athletes ages 10-14. For athletes under 10 years of age, a Pediatric version of the test was available at a minimal cost. Community College of Allegheny County once again served as host to testing at its Boyce, North, South and West Hills Center campuses along with UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side. Community College of Beaver County joined the initiative as a new site for testing and education. The entire testing process takes about one hour. Certified athletic trainers from UPMC Sports Medicine supervise the program and testing. While the athletes are being tested, parents meet with the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion staff to learn about the Heads UP Pittsburgh program and how to handle concussions if they occur. Heads UP Pittsburgh, the first program of its kind and a blueprint copied by other NHL organizations, began in 2011 with baseline testing and parental education programs for youth hockey players. In 2012, the Penguins Foundation expanded the program to include athletes of all sports ages 10 to 14. Since the program’s inception, over 13,000 athletes have been tested and over 33,000 people educated. For more information, please visit the Penguins Foundation website at pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org.

HOCKEY IS FOR

EVERYONE For years Western Pennsylvania youth sports have been dominated by the likes of football, basketball and baseball. Recently however, the region has begun to see a change in preference and participation in sports. Hockey is rapidly becoming the most popular and fastest growing sport in the area. Success seen with the Pittsburgh Penguins on the NHL ice has surely created a demand and a certain excitement around the game, however the popularity of hockey goes well beyond the wins and world class talent the Penguins possess. A genuine love for the game is starting to sweep the area. Kids are beginning to play hockey at younger and younger ages thanks to the Little Penguins: Learn to Play Hockey program. This program will allow 1,000 kids, ages 4-8, to receive free head-to-toe gear all thanks to the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and DICK’S Sporting Goods. Since it began in 2008-09 over 5,200 have been introduced to hockey through this program. The Penguins have also teamed up with the DICK’S Sporting Goods, Trib Total Media and the YMCA to create the YMCA Jr. Penguins program which introduces children to the sport through ball hockey. Each year, over 3,100 children participate in organized ball hockey at local YMCAs. Recently the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered together for Project PowerPlay, which will build 12 dek hockey rinks throughout Allegheny County over a threeyear period and allow local residents to play dek hockey for free. Dek hockey is becoming a great way to learn and play hockey without having ice, and was also vital in the development of current Penguins forward Beau Bennett who grew up in sunny California. continued on page 129

In 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation embarked on a new venture, Tablets in Education. This innovative, new program combined the latest in tablet technology with educational apps and content. With the assistance of the Allegheny Intermediate Unit (AIU3), 60 schools in Allegheny County were selected to participate in the first year of the program; distributing 1,200 Kindle Fire HDX 7 tablets to local schools. Each school enrolled in Tablets in Education received 20 Kindle Fire HDX 7 tablets, a mobile charging station and 20 shock resistant covers. Each device was then loaded with over 50 educational apps, books and specialized content. These apps were carefully selected with the assistance of Common Sense Media and the professionals at the AIU3, providing more than $100,000 worth of content. The devices are designed to be utilized for unique educational programs, extended learning programs and programs for children with disabilities. The technology utilized in Tablets in Education is designed to enhance a child’s academic achievement while continuing to support their social development and relationships with adults and peers through the most critical years of an adolescent’s growth and development. A portion of the funding for this new program was made possible by contributions through the EITC (Educational Improvement Tax Credit) program. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation would like to acknowledge the following organizations for their contributions to Tablets in Education: Kindle Education, B.M. Kramer, Common Sense Media, PNC, CONSOL Energy, Trumbull, Northwest Savings Bank, AE Foundation, PPG and Consolidated Graphic Communications.

ICEBURGH A delight for children of all ages, Iceburgh — the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins not only provides fans with exciting game entertainment but this large, energetic bird can also be seen at a multitude of community events and elementary schools throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. Iceburgh arrived on the scene in 1992 and is a staple at all team events. During Penguins’ home games, fans most definitely notice the antics of Iceburgh leading sections of fans in cheers, greeting young children on the concourse or displaying his athleticism on-ice between periods. In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture Sudden Death. He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh wasted no time getting acquainted with his new home at CONSOL Energy Center in September of 2010. You can find Iceburgh sliding down stair banisters, dancing in the stands and tossing t-shirts to fans. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and recently performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. In addition to his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game, Iceburgh makes annual appearances at the Mascot Olympics held in Orlando, FL. If you would like to request an Iceburgh appearance at your next event, please complete the online form by visiting the community section of pittsburghpenguins.com.

DRAFT CLASS

KASPERI KAPANEN

Forward • 1st Round, 22nd Overall Kapanen, the son of former NHL player Sami Kapanen, was the No. 1-ranked European prospect entering the 2014 NHL Draft by Central Registry. During the 2013-14 season, he played professionally for KalPa of the Finnish Elite League where he and Sami were teammates. Beyond the Numbers: Both Kasperi and his father were selected in the NHL Draft by current Penguins GM Jim Rutherford. Sami Kapanen was chosen in the fourth round (87th overall) in the 1995 Draft.

SAM LAFFERTY

Forward • 4th Round, 113th Overall A native of Hollidaysburg, Pa., which is located just outside of Altoona, Lafferty played amateur hockey for the Altoona Trackers of the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL). A graduate of Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts, Lafferty is currently playing college hockey at Brown University. Beyond the Numbers: Although Lafferty’s favorite player growing up was Sidney Crosby, if he had to pick a current Penguins player that he emulates his game after, it would be Brandon Sutter because he is a “responsible, two-way player.” continued on page 153

ANTHONY ANGELLO

Forward • 5th Round, 145th Overall Last season, as a rookie forward with the Omaha Lancers of the United States Hockey League (USHL), Angello placed second among team rookies with 11 goals, while his shooting percentage (14.7%) ranked third overall on the squad. He plans to attend college at Cornell University. Beyond the Numbers: It should come as no surprise that Angello will be attending an Ivy League school because last season he was the co-recipient of the USHL Scholar Athlete Award.

JADEN LINDO

Forward • 6th Round, 173rd Overall As a rookie with the Ontario Hockey League’s Owen Sound Attack in 2012-13, Lindo was named his team’s rookie of the year. Before he suffered a season-ending knee injury last February, he was rated the 96th-best North American prospect by Central Registry. Beyond the Numbers: When Lindo skated for the Toronto Marlboros Minor Midget AAA team in 2011-12, he was teammates with current Erie Otters forward Connor McDavid, who many project to be the top pick in the 2015 NHL Draft.

JEFF TAYLOR

Defenseman • 7th Round, 203rd Overall Helped the Union College Dutch of the ECAC capture the 2014 NCAA Frozen Four National Championship, notching an assist in the semifinal game of the Frozen Four. Taylor led all Union rookie blueliners in scoring with 16 points. Beyond the Numbers: Last season Jeff was named to the ECAC All-Rookie Team as an 18-year-old true freshman.

PROJECT

POWER PLAY The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE completed four more dek hockey rinks for local communities in 2014 as their first-of-its-kind Project Power Play program entered its third year. The new rinks are located in Graham Park in Cranberry Township, Settler’s Cabin in Robinson, Renzie Park in McKeesport and North Park in McCandless. Project Power Play is a $2.3 million initiative designed to build 12 dek hockey rinks in Pittsburgh and surrounding communities over a four-year period. Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield is leading the way by providing $1.5 million in funding, with the Penguins Foundation contributing $800,000. The rinks are multi-purpose courts measuring 155 feet by 75 feet. They include a premier dasher board system, scoreboard, player benches covered by metal shelters, a penalty box, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment. Project Power Play was introduced in 2012, with the first two rinks being built in Banksville Park and Lewis Park in Hazelwood. Four more rinks were added in 2013 at Brookline Memorial Park, Hosanna House Sherwood Event Center in Wilkinsburg, Riverside Park in Oakmont and Richland Community Park. The City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and surrounding communities are providing the land as well as maintenance services, lighting and additional support. Two more rinks will be built in 2015, bringing the total to 12.

PENGUINS PROFILE

MAXIM

LAPIERRE By: Mark Madden

Maxim Lapierre’s checkered past includes a few run-ins with Penguins captain Sidney Crosby. The odd butt-end, even. But when Lapierre was acquired by the Penguins on Jan. 27, he felt like he arrived with a clean slate. “We know what roles we have to play. Sid knows what kind of game I need to bring to my team,” Lapierre said. “Now we’re teammates.” Lapierre initially promised to buy Crosby dinner. He hasn’t yet, but “I will,” Lapierre said, laughing. “To make sure we’re all right for the rest of the season.” Lapierre is no fun to play against. He’s an agitator. That’s why the Penguins got the 6-foot-2, 215-pound center from St. Louis in exchange for Marcel Goc. The Quebec native had two goals and seven assists in 45 games with St. Louis. He had one assist in his first 11 games with the Penguins, assuming mostly fourth-line and PK duty. Perhaps Lapierre’s biggest attribute is his playoff experience. GM Jim Rutherford cited that as one huge reason the Penguins acquired him. continued on page 162

161

continued from page 161

Lapierre, 29, has played 75 NHL playoff games, posting seven goals and eight assists. He helped Montreal get to the 2010 Eastern Conference Final — the Canadiens eliminated the Penguins in the second round — and helped Vancouver reach the 2011 Stanley Cup Final. Lapierre had the only goal in Game Five of that 2011 Stanley Cup Final as Vancouver beat Boston, 1-0. But the Canucks went down in seven games. “Playoff experience is huge,” Lapierre said. “Every year when I go to start the playoffs, I’m less and less nervous. “When you start in the league and go through your first few playoff games, you’re really nervous. You change your game a little bit, or try to do too much. But that ride to the Stanley Cup Final [in 2011] changed everything. “Now I’m really confident in myself when I get into the playoffs. I feel really good about myself. It’s definitely the time of year when I really enjoy playing.” Lapierre says that playoff hockey “is all about the little details. Everyone blocks shots. Finishes checks. Battles on every faceoff. Plays with more passion. It’s more intense. That’s why I love it so much. Even the crowds are more into it.” Lapierre’s game has evolved since he broke into the league. He played a single game with Montreal in 2005-06. He split the next two campaigns between Montreal and the American Hockey League, then became a full-time NHL player with the Canadiens in 2008-09, reaching his career high of 15 goals. “When I came into the league, obviously you want to make a name for yourself,” Lapierre said. “Chip the puck and hit everyone. That was all people were asking me to do at a young age. “Now they want me to play a more mature, defensively responsible game. You change your game every year. But it depends on what team you’re playing for and what the coach wants. Definitely, I’ve added to my game since I was younger.” Lapierre became the latest addition to a strong FrenchCanadian contingent on the Penguins. He joins Simon Despres, Pascal Dupuis, Marc-Andre Fleury, Kris Letang and David Perron. “That’s different,” Lapierre said. “I think it’s a first in my career. It’s always fun. “But it doesn’t matter if you speak French, English or Russian. I always enjoy my time with my teammates. I think I’m lucky. I’m in a great group right now.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

CROSBY SURPRISES LITTLE PENGUINS By: Haley Sawyer

Members of Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program that were invited to watch team practice on Feb. 18 were bummed when they learned that the captain had a maintenance day and wouldn’t be taking the ice. Little did they know he was planning to surprise them during a skate of their own afterward. “She kept looking for him and looking for him,” said Todd Bucci of his five-year-old daughter Gianna. “I said, ‘maybe he’ll come out later. You never know.’ Sure enough, he did. So she’s pretty excited.” Crosby and teammates Marc-Andre Fleury, Nick Spaling, Robert Bortuzzo and Zach Sill joined the group of 36 children for a session on the CONSOL Energy Center ice. “I don’t think they knew we were coming,” Fleury smiled. “I think it’s a great thing Sid does with his partners, and for us, it’s fun to be with him and have some fun with the kids.” “It’s a great program,” Crosby said. “There’s a ton of volunteers that help out, but it’s nice to get a few players out here today. These kids are hopefully enjoying themselves, having the opportunity to play like all of us did at the same age. It was a nice little time here and hopefully they had fun.” A combined effort between Crosby, Reebok, DICK’S Sporting Goods and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation provided free headto-toe equipment to over 1,000 children between the ages of 4-8 this year. Now in its seventh season, the program has introduced over 6,200 players to the sport since its inception in 2008-09 and has

played a crucial role in the growth of youth hockey, especially in the 10-and-under age group, in western Pennsylvania. Christy Klasnick has experienced that growth firsthand, as four-year-old Tucker is her third son to participate in Little Penguins. She and her husband think it’s tremendous what Crosby and the program have done for families like theirs, considering how expensive it would be to outfit three growing boys in hockey equipment — not to mention the costs and ice bills that would come along with playing for local teams. “My sons were in the inaugural program when it first started years ago, so it’s a great opportunity for kids to participate and get experience with hockey without the financial commitment to know whether or not you really want to go forward with it,” she said. “But it’s so fun I think most kids continue on.” When this year’s participants went to pick up their full sets of Reebok SC87 equipment back in January — including skates, stick, helmet, gloves, pants, shoulder pads, shin pads and elbow pads — randomly selected children discovered “Golden Tickets” to watch Penguins Practice and participate in a special on-ice clinic at CONSOL Energy Center in their equipment bag. They had no idea they would have the chance to skate alongside their idol himself. “It’s awesome,” Bucci said. “That’s all Gianna talked about this morning, was coming down here and getting an opportunity to come out and skate. Then of course to see [Crosby], you could just see it in her eyes that she’s really excited.” continued on page 177

The kids aren’t just given brand-new equipment through the program — they’re given an opportunity to learn the sport. The players receive weekly lessons at 24 participating rinks, including four special programs for girls only. Volunteers at each venue provide on-ice teaching. “With equipment being so expensive and not being easy to find gear and ice time and stuff like that, hopefully this gives them a chance,” Crosby said. “It doesn’t happen without the volunteers and the people spending the time do that. With that, we’re able to create a good program here and give a lot of kids the opportunity to play.” For the lucky skaters at the arena, lessons were taught by Crosby himself. “[This program] is unbelievable,” Ryan Wilson said. “It’s the greatest thing. I wish I had the same experience growing up that [seven-year-old Braxton] did. He loves it. Now he wants to go to all the games. Sidney this, Sidney this, Sidney this — it’s all we hear about all day long. And then to see him and Fleury out here, to get to run around with them, it’s the greatest.” Crosby understands how exciting it is for these kids to have the chance to skate with him, as he remembers what it was like when then-pro players Cam Russell and Don McLean, from his native Nova Scotia, took the time to skate with him back before he was Sidney Crosby, NHL superstar. “I remember how excited I got having the opportunity to see those guys up close, so hopefully those kids felt the same way today with Flower and all the guys that came out,” Crosby said. Maybe the next Sidney Crosby — or Marc-Andre Fleury — was among this group today. “I think if they can smile a bit, have some fun playing hockey, that’s the main thing why we’re here,” Fleury said before adding with a smile, “Make them enjoy the game and hopefully, they can keep playing and steal my job someday.”

OVER THE BOARDS, OVER THE BORDER By: Haley Sawyer

CANADIAN-ISRAELI HOCKEY SCHOOL VISITS PENGUINS “I don’t have words to describe this feeling that I’m feeling right now,” Irad Chen said as he stood in CONSOL Energy Center. “I’m just so excited.” Sixteen-year-old Chen just might be the Pittsburgh Penguins’ No. 1 fan, and he’s not even from North America. “I’ve already [been to] two NHL games, but not Pittsburgh Penguins games, so this one I’m excited for 10 times more,” he said. Chen is a part of the Canada-Israel Hockey School (CIHS), a program formed in 2010 originally designed to bridge the gap between Arab and Jewish children. CIHS is based in Metulla, Israel, a northern city that rests on the border of Lebanon. It’s also the only city in the country with a full-sized hockey rink. Since 2012, the group has traveled to Canada, Finland and the United States, most recently Washington, D.C. “When we wanted to come to Pittsburgh, we just needed to find someone who had a connection to someone who could share our story,” said Mitch Miller, the team’s North American liaison. “As soon as our story was shared, the Penguins were on board and they were happy to help with kids who play hockey.” While visiting the Penguins, the group of 20 CIHS hockey players, age 14-17, had a tour of the locker room, the weight room and shooting room and an invite to the team’s Skate with the Greats event. They also watched a morning skate Thursday and attended Sunday’s game against Florida. They even took part in an intermission shootout during the game.

AROUND THE NHL By: Mike Prisuta

EARLY AND OFTEN: Minnesota reeled off a 12-2-2 run through 16 games in part by scoring the first goal in 13 of those 16 games. The Wild’s 30-21-7 record through 58 games included a 25-6-3 mark when scoring the first goal.

RECORDSETTING ROOKIE: Dallas D John Klingberg’s assist on Feb. 21 against Detroit was his 21st of the season and his 13th point in the Stars’ last 12 games. Klingberg emerged with Stars records (since 1993-94) for goals by a rookie defenseman (10), assists by a rookie defenseman (21) and points by a rookie defenseman (31).

FILLING THE VOID: Buffalo G Michal Neuvirth made 138 saves and posted a goals-against average of 1.93 and a save percentage of .945 in the first four games since the Sabres traded G Jhonas Enroth to Dallas.

184

RANGERS REVIVAL: The Rangers’ 35-16-6 record through 57 games included an NHL-best 24 wins since Dec. 8 and the Blueshirts holding the distinction of being the only NHL team with at least 16 regulation or overtime wins at home and on the road. Special teams had also been a major factor in the Rangers’ resurgence. They went 13-1-1 in the first 15 games in which they outscored their opponent on special teams. A part of that success included short-handed goals; the Rangers were tied for No. 2 in the NHL with eight of those through 57 games and had an NHL-leading 18 since the start of the 2013-14 season.

THREE JACKETS THAT FIT: Columbus got eight goals and 13 points from the line of C Brandon Dubinsky, LW Matt Calvert and RW Cam Atkinson in the threesome’s first five games as a unit. The Blue Jackets went 3-2 in the fivegame stretch with Dubinsky (4+2), Calvert (2+2) and Atkinson (2+1) leading the way.

SKATE WITH THE GREATS PRESENTED BY 84 LUMBER By: Haley Sawyer

The blue line at CONSOL Energy Center was never more solidified than on Feb. 18, 2015. It wasn’t players guarding the neutral zone, but rather Penguins fans of all ages. Each was waiting in a long line to have a few moments with head coach Mike Johnston at the Penguins’ fourth annual Skate with the Greats presented by 84 Lumber. “It’s a good time,” said Rachel Spinetti of Butler. “I got to meet a lot of old Penguins players and the opportunity to skate on the ice.” In addition to Johnston, 14 Penguins alumni — including current assistant coach Rick Tocchet — were in attendance at the event. Fans could take the ice or opt for dry land with an autograph session. continued on page 190

“It’s nice to see some of the old, great, vintage players,” said Brad Zwierlein of Bridgeville. “I’ve talked to [Francois] Leroux and [Peter] Taglianetti. Great guys.” “They appreciate us coming out,” Kim Clackson said. “There’s a lot of great fans in Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh has been a great hockey town for a lot of years and it’s fun to get out and mingle with the fans.” Families seize the opportunity as a way of making lasting memories. Zwierlein was accompanied by his wife, three sons and nephew. “We had an awesome time last year, so we brought some friends and family with us this time,” Zwierlein said. Penguins alumni see Skate with the Greats as a way of revisiting old memories with old friends. “Seeing the guys brings back a lot of memories,” Taglianetti said. “We didn’t play in this building, but you see the guys, you hear the stories, you go in the hallway and the Stanley Cup is there with your name on it and we had a chance to see it. It’s a pretty cool event.” The event is one of many Penguins Alumni fundraising efforts. All proceeds from Skate with the Greats presented by 84 Lumber are donated to Penguins Alumni charities. “You don’t get a lot of repeat customers,” Taglianetti said. “It’s growing. It is sold out every year, which is great. We raise a lot of money for charities and it just gives everybody a little flashback down memory lane.”

RULES CHANGES nhl.com

RULE 1.8

RINK - GOALKEEPER’S RESTRICTED AREA The trapezoid will be expanded by two feet from the goal post on both sides of the net.

RULE 23

GAME MISCONDUCT PENALTIES A new Game Misconduct category will be created. Clipping, charging, elbowing, interference, kneeing, head-butting and butt-ending move from the general category into the same category as boarding and checking from behind (Physical Fouls), whereby a player who incurs two such game misconducts in this category would now be automatically suspended for one game.

RULE 24

PENALTY SHOT The Spin-O-Rama move, as described in Section 24.2 of the 2013-14 NHL Rule Book, will no longer be permitted either in Penalty Shot situations or in the Shootout.

RULE 38

VIDEO GOAL JUDGE Video review will be expanded in the following areas: * Rule 38.4 (viii) has been modified to allow broader discretion to Hockey Operations to assist the referees in determining the legitimacy of all potential goals (e.g., to ensure they are good hockey goals). The revised Rule will allow Hockey Operations to correct a broader array of situations where video review clearly establishes that a goal or no goal call on the ice has been made in error. The new expanded rule will also allow Hockey Operations to provide guidance to referees on goal and potential goal plays where the continued on page 198

197

continued from page 197

referee has blown his whistle (or intended to blow his whistle) after having lost sight of the puck. * In reviewing Kicked in Goals, Hockey Operations will require more demonstrable video evidence of a distinct kicking motion in order to overrule a goal call on the ice, or to uphold a no goal call on the ice.

RULE 57 TRIPPING

The rule relating to Tripping will be revised to specifically provide that a two minute minor penalty will be assessed when a defending player dives and trips an attacking player with his body/arm/shoulder, regardless of whether the defending player is able to make initial contact with the puck. But, in situations where a penalty shot might otherwise be appropriate, if the defending player dives and touches the puck first (before the trip), no penalty shot will be awarded. (In such cases, the resulting penalty will be limited to a two-minute minor penalty for tripping.)

RULE 76 FACE-OFFS

To curb delay tactics on face-offs after icing infractions, in situations where the defending team is guilty of a face-off violation, following an icing, the defending player who is initially lined up for the face-off will be given a warning, but will be required to remain in the circle to take the face-off. A second face-off violation by the defending team in such situation will result in a two minute minor bench penalty.

RULE 64

DIVING / EMBELLISHMENT The supplementary discipline penalties associated with Rule 64.3 (Diving/Embellishment) will be revised to bring attention to and more seriously penalize players (and teams) who repeatedly dive and embellish in an attempt to draw penalties. Fines will be assessed to players and head coaches on a graduated scale. continued on page 201

RULE 84 OVERTIME

* Teams will switch ends prior to the start of overtime in the regular season. * The entire ice surface will undergo a dry scrape prior to the start of overtime in the regular season. * The procedure requiring the head coach to submit a list of the first three shooters in the shoot-out has been eliminated.

RULE 85

PUCK OUT OF BOUNDS There have been further rule changes made relating to face-off location to avoid penalizing teams for plays intended to create bona fide scoring opportunities. Specifically, the following are categories of plays where face-offs will remain in the attacking zone despite the fact that the attacking team was technically responsible for the stoppage in play: Shots at the net by a player on the attacking team where: (i) the shot breaks the glass; (ii) the shot goes off the side of the net and deflects out of play; (iii) the shot goes off the dasher boards or glass and deflects out of play; (iv) the shot is tipped or deflected out of play by a teammate; and (v) the shot becomes wedged in or on the exterior of the goal net. In addition, the following rule change will be enacted for the 2014 preseason and may be continued for the 2014-15 regular season if approved by the League and the NHLPA.

RULE 1.9

RINK – FACE-OFF SPOTS AND CIRCLES – ICE MARKINGS/HASH MARKS The hash marks at the end zone circles will be moved from three feet apart to five feet, seven inches apart (international markings).
