WITH WHOM DO YOU ATTEND PENGUINS HOME GAMES? I attend most games with my 11-year-old son, Mikey. HAVE YOU EVER ATTENDED A PENGUINS AWAY GAME? IF SO, WHERE? My son and I have gone to every outdoor game the Penguins have played, including the original Winter Classic in Buffalo, the Winter Classic in Pittsburgh and the Stadium Series in Chicago. I’ve also attended away games in Carolina and Detroit (2009 playoffs with my son), Florida and New Jersey (1999 playoffs), Philadelphia (1997 playoffs for Mario’s last game), Tampa Bay and Washington (2001 playoffs). AS A SEASON TICKET HOLDER, WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST CHERISHED PENGUINS MEMORY? I wasn’t a season ticket holder then, but Game One of the Stanley Cup Final against Chicago in 1992 was the most incredible game I’ve ever attended. I’ve never felt an arena more excited than during that game; the building was literally shaking. continued on page 6

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m also a hockey official, working everything from little kids games through college games. Finally, I help coach multiple teams because my son and daughter both play hockey. My son plays on three different teams. We are very much a hockey family!

THE SERIES [VS] RANGERS

Tonight the Penguins and New York Rangers meet here in Game Three of their Eastern Conference playoff series. The teams played Games One and Two in New York last Thursday and Saturday, and Game Four is set for CONSOL Energy Center on Wednesday. . . This is the sixth all-time playoff series between Pittsburgh and New York, with the Penguins winning four of the five previous series. The only New York victory came in the second round last spring, when the Rangers rallied from a 3-1 deficit to the win the series in Game Seven here. . . Pittsburghâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s playoff victories over New York came in 1989 (4-0 in the first round), 1992 (4-2 in the second round), 1996 (4-1 in the second round) and 2008 (4-1 in the second round). . . The only playoff opponent the Penguins have faced more often than the Rangers is the Washington Capitals (eight times). . . This is the first time the Penguins have faced the Rangers in the opening round since 1989. . . When this series began, Pittsburgh had won 19 of the 27 all-time playoff games against New York. The Penguins are 10-5 in 15 home playoff games against the Rangers, who won three of the four games here last spring. continued on page 10

Three of those five losses were by one goal, including a pair of overtime losses. . . Pittsburgh is 4-1 in Game Threes vs. New York, the only loss coming here in 1992 (5-6, OT) in the only Game Three to be played in Pittsburgh prior to this one. . . The Rangers won the Presidents’ Trophy as the NHL’s best team during the regular season, earning 113 points to finish three ahead of Montreal. When New York won its first Presidents’ Trophy in 1992, the Rangers were eliminated by the Penguins. . . The Rangers won the regular season series against Pittsburgh, going 3-0-1 in four meetings. The Penguins’ only victory was a 3-2 shootout win here on Nov. 15 when Dan Boyle’s apparent shootout goal was waived off and the Penguins rallied to win. The Penguins have only one regulation victory in their last 10 regular season games against New York, winning three other games in shootouts. . . Pittsburgh is 6-1-1 in its last eight regular season home games against the Rangers, the only regulation loss coming in the last meeting here on Jan. 18 (5-2 New York win).

Pittsburgh earned its ninth consecutive playoff berth, the NHL’s second-longest active streak next to Detroit (24), with a 2-0 victory in Buffalo on April 11. Marc-Andre Fleury recorded his league-leading 10th shutout while Brandon Sutter scored two goals. . . This is the first openinground playoff series the Penguins began on the road since 2007, when they fell to Ottawa in five games. . . Pittsburgh began these playoffs with a 167-144 record in 311 all-time playoff games, and the Penguins are 90-67 in 157 all-time home playoff games. Pittsburgh has lost six of its last nine home playoff games . . . The Penguins have lost each of the last five home playoff games that went to overtime; their last such win here was in Game Three against Washington in 2009, when Kris Letang scored at 11:23 for a 3-2 victory. . . Letang is likely out for the season, although the Penguins were hoping to have defenseman Christian Ehrhoff back at some point in this series. . . Sidney Crosby began this series ranked third all-time among Pittsburgh playoff scorers with 41 goals and 114 points in 95 games, while Evgeni Malkin was fourth with 42 goals and 111 points in 96 games. . . When the series opened, Crosby had one goal and nine points in 12 career playoff games against New York, while Malkin had seven goals and 14 points in 12 post-season games against the Rangers. . . At the start of this series, Fleury was 7-5 in his career against the Rangers in the playoffs, with the Penguins scoring a total of five goals in his five losses. . . 2015 NCAA FROZEN FOUR

BOSTON — Only in New England could a Frozen Four come down to a Bill Buckner-esque moment and, perhaps, to Divine Providence. Both conspired to turn the 2015 NCAA Championship Game in the favor of the underdog Providence Friars in what became a 4-3 upset of Boston University. Or so it seemed. BU was leading 3-2 midway through the third period on April 11 at TD Garden when a dump-in from center ice that should have been harmless was inexplicably caught and then dropped by Terriers goalie Matt O’Connor. The puck trickled between O’Connor’s legs and into the BU net. The Friars scored again 2:19 later and were on their way to becoming the NCAA’s third first-time champion in the last four seasons, following in the skate strides of Minnesota-Duluth (2011), Yale (2013) and Union (2014). Their story was as remarkable as that game-tying goal is destined to remain unforgettable in the all-time ranks of such happenings, but Boston’s Frozen Four was about so much more:

THE COMBATANTS North Dakota and Boston University arrived with a combined 43 Frozen Four appearances and 12 national championships, and with a combined 21 NHL draft choices on their rosters. That latter total didn’t include BU center Jack Eichel, the presumed first- or second-overall selection in the upcoming NHL continued on page 24

Entry Draft and the first freshman to lead the nation in scoring (67 points) since Maine’s Paul Kariya (100 in 1992-93). Providence and NebraskaOmaha, the matchup in the first semifinal, showed up with a combined 14 NHL selections, including Penguins 2013 thirdround pick Jake Guentzel, Nebraska-Omaha’s leading scorer. More than two-thirds of the NHL’s teams (21 of 30) have prospects competing, led by Calgary and Chicago (four each). The Mavericks were a first-time participant in the Frozen Four. Providence was there for the first time since 1985, when it was led, in part, by defenseman Peter Taglianetti, who won a couple of Stanley Cups with the Penguins in an NHL career which ended in 1994-95. Tags’ son Jon is now an assistant equipment manager with the Penguins. Yeah, it’s been a while for the Friars.

FROZEN FOUR THURSDAY Guentzel, 5-foot-10 and 167 pounds, scored again for Nebraska-Omaha, cutting a 2-0 Providence lead in half midway through the third period. But Guentzel’s team-leading 14th goal and team-leading 39th point turned out to be all the Mavericks managed in what became a 4-1 loss. In the nightcap, North Dakota had 14 draftees, including firstround brothers Jordan Schmaltz (defenseman, St. Louis, 2012) and Nick Schmaltz (forward, Chicago, 2014) leading the charge on a team that appeared in its second consecutive Frozen Four and its eighth since last winning a championship in 1999-00. But BU had Eichel. And Eichel has hands, hockey sense, battle level, reach, skating ability and vision all on display as advertised while scoring twice (the second time into an empty net) and assisting once in what became a 5-3 victory. continued on page 26

FROZEN FOUR FRIDAY College hockey’s major award winners were highlighted on an off day for the two remaining teams. The Mike Richter Award (best goaltender) went to North Dakota’s Zane McIntyre, who just got beat by BU. The Spencer Penrose Award (coach of the year, announced on Wednesday) went to Minnesota State’s Mike Hastings, who lost as the No. 1 overall seed to No. 16-seed RIT in the Midwest Regional semifinals. None of this boded well for Eichel, who won The Hobey Baker Award (college hockey’s Heisman Trophy). The Derek Hines Unsung Hero Award went to goaltender P.J. Musico of Penn State, a first for Pennsylvania’s third-year Division I program.

CHAMPIONSHIP SATURDAY Legendary former BU coach Jack Parker was interviewed during a break in the action as a part of ESPNU’s broadcast of the BU-Providence title tilt and was asked about Eichel. “He’s got a little Mario Lemieux in him,” Parker offered. It isn’t a ridiculous comparison given Eichel’s size (6-2, 194), the way he skates and protects the puck, and the way he takes on double-teams and comes out on the other side with the puck. But against Providence even that wasn’t enough. Friars first-round pick Mark Jankowski (center, 2012, Calgary) tied the game at 2-2 early in the second, a precursor to Kyle McKenzie tying the game at 3-3 on the center-ice miracle shot in the third. The eventual game-winning goal was scored off the stick of Providence junior winger Brandon Tanev, whose brother Chris is with the Vancouver Canucks. Tanev’s tally was an eventual heartbreaker for first-year BU Director of Hockey Operations Scott Young (43 regular-season games and 17 playoff encounters with the Cup-winning Penguins in 1991). The Friars’ triumph made a national champion out of junior forward Brooks Behling (Mt. Lebanon). See you next year in Tampa.

Here’s a look at the key players on the Rangers roster heading into Round One of the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

HENRIK LUNDQVIST | G Although Lundqvist missed 25 games over a two-month span with a vascular injury after taking a puck to the throat, the netminder still managed to reach the 30-goal mark for the ninth year in a row. The 2012 Vezina Trophy winner returned on March 28 and quickly shook off any rust, winning five of seven starts to close out the season. In addition to Lundqvist, the Rangers also have Cam Talbot to add depth to the net. He gained experience when Lundqvist was out, posting a 16-4-3 record with five shutouts. Overall, Talbot has a .926 save percentage and a 2.21 goals against average.

RICK NASH | LW Nash has been thriving in the Big Apple ever since Columbus traded him to the Rangers back in 2012. The elite goal scorer had his best season in that area this year, finishing with 42 tallies in 79 games — which ranked third in the NHL behind only Alex Ovechkin and Steven Stamkos. While Nash can always be depended on for offensive fire, the big forward has developed into a defensively reliable player as well — which is exemplified with his four shorthanded goals. continued on page 30

DERICK BRASSARD | C Like Nash, Brassard is a former Blue Jacket who has excelled in New York City. The 27-year-old has developed into a top center and finished the regular season with career highs in goals (19) and points (60). Compare that to last year’s 45 and you’ve got a big difference. He’s been a threat on the manadvantage, as Brassard finished the regular season leading the Rangers in power-play assists and points. He’s been dominant against the Penguins and was a big reason the Rangers won in seven games last year, as Brassard finished with four goals and seven points in that series.

MATS ZUCCARELLO | RW After a tough start to the regular season where he dealt with a contract dispute and had a slow first half, Zuccarello got hot after the All-Star break and finished fifth on the team with 49 points. In addition to adding scoring depth, the forward brings a physical presence to his game even though he checks in at just 5-foot-7. He makes up for his lack of size with his work ethic. Zuccarello’s line with Derick Brassard and Rick Nash has been one of the most consistent for the Rangers all season.

RYAN MCDONAGH | D Earning the “C” on his sweater at the start of this season, the 25-year-old Minnesota native had a new leadership role to shoulder. And he thrived in it, as his Rangers finished the regular season as the top team in the NHL. McDonagh does it all for the Rangers. He eats a lot of minutes while playing in all situations, and can be a shutdown defender while also contributing offense. McDonagh, who skates on the first power-play unit and the top shorthanded D pairing, finished the regular season ranked first among team defensemen with 33 points.

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 16th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including eight straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past seven years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Known as Le Magnifique, Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in technology, retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 16th season as co-owner of the Penguins. Jim Rutherford is in his first season as the Penguins GM after being hired on June 6, 2014. Rutherford spent the previous 20 years as GM of the Carolina Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers franchise from 1994-2014 where he was a key architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team. In addition to his general manager duties, he also served 20 years as president of Carolina/Hartford, taking the post in 1994. In his role as president/GM, Rutherford oversaw operations on both the hockey and business sides of the organization. He helped spearhead the efforts to bring the 2004 NHL Draft and 2011 NHL All-Star Game to Raleigh. Over the course of his executive career, Rutherford has won multiple awards, including The Hockey News ‘Executive of the Year’ in 2002 and ’06. Additionally, he was voted by his NHL general management peers as Sporting News ‘Executive of the Year’ in 2006. Before his 20 years in the NHL, Rutherford was recognized as the 1987 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) ‘Executive of the Year’, and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) ‘Executive of the Year’ in back-to-back years with the Windsor Spitfires in 1987 and ’88. He oversaw a Spitfires team that won the OHL championship in 1988 and earned a berth in the Memorial Cup. In addition to his time with Hartford/Carolina, Rutherford also spent over 30 years working with Compuware Sports Corporation, overseeing the purchase of Windsor in 1984 and bringing the first American-based OHL franchise to Detroit in 1989. Rutherford played 13 years as a goaltender in the NHL, appearing in 457 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit. JASON BOTTERILL ASSOCIATE GENERAL MANAGER

Jason Botterill is in his first season as associate general manager after being promoted from assistant general manager on June 6, 2014. As associate GM, Botterill assists GM Jim Rutherford on all hockey-related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also serves as GM of the Penguins’ top minorleague affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League (AHL). The WB/S Penguins have made the playoffs all five years he has overseen the team, including back-to-back berths in the Eastern Conference Final (2013 and ‘14). Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 38, spent the previous five years as the Penguins assistant GM from 2009-14, and the two years prior to that as the team’s director of hockey administration beginning in 2007-08 where he was a key architect of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team. Before joining the Penguins, Botterill worked for NHL Central Registry and as a scout for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the first round (20th overall) in 1994 NHL Draft and played in 88 NHL games for Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo before his career was cut short due to injury. He also suited up for 393 career minorleague games in the American and International Hockey Leagues, tallying 257 career points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four years of college hockey at the University of Michigan and helped lead the Wolverines to an NCAA title in 1996. Botterill represented Canada in three straight World Junior Championships from 1994-96, winning gold medals all three years. TOM FITZGERALD ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER

Tom Fitzgerald is in his first season as assistant general manager after spending the previous five seasons as the Penguins assistant to the GM from 2009-14. Fitzgerald’s duties include monitoring Penguins’ prospects playing in college, junior hockey, Europe and with the club’s American Hockey League affiliate Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Additionally, he advises GM Jim Rutherford on all personnel decisions. Fitzgerald was named interim assistant coach of the Penguins on Feb. 15, 2009 and helped the club win its third Stanley Cup championship four months later. He began his executive career as the Penguins player development coach in 2007-08. Drafted in the first round (17th overall) by the New York Islanders in the 1986 NHL Draft, Fitzgerald played 17 seasons in the NHL, appearing in 1,097 career games where he recorded 329 career points (139G-190A). He has represented his country nationally three times — once with Team USA at the 1987 World Junior Championship and twice in the World Championships (1989, ’91).

BILL GUERIN ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER

Bill Guerin is in his first season as assistant general manager after serving as Pittsburgh’s player development coach from 2011-14. Guerin’s responsibilities as assistant general manager include serving as a liaison between the players and management. As the Penguins player development coach, Guerin was instrumental in helping develop the Penguins’ minor league, junior and college prospects. Originally drafted by New Jersey in the first round (5th overall) of the 1989 NHL Draft, Guerin won two Stanley Cups (Pittsburgh, 2009; New Jersey, 1995) and spent 18 seasons in the NHL — including his final two with the Penguins. Guerin’s leadership and on-ice performance after being acquired at the NHL trade deadline was a key in Pittsburgh’s ’09 title. Guerin, a four-time NHL All-Star, tallied 429 career goals and 856 points in 1,263 career NHL games, including five 30-goal and two 40-goal seasons. He was elected to the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 2013.

Jason Karmanos is in his first season as the vice president of hockey operations after being named to his current position on June 12, 2014. MIKE JOHNSTON HEAD COACH

Mike Johnston is in his first season as head coach of the Penguins after being named to his position on June 25, 2014. Johnson had spent the past six years as the general manager/head coach of the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League (WHL) from 2008-13, where he helped turn Portland into a Canadian Hockey League powerhouse and perennial contender. Under Johnston’s guidance, Portland made four straight WHL Championship berths (2010-14), winning the WHL championship and earning a Memorial Cup berth in 2012-13. During that time his team won four straight conference championships. Johnston’s teams are known for their offensive prowess — during his six seasons with Portland, his team’s goals for total rose each year from 176 in 2008-09 to a league-leading 338 in ‘13-14. Johnston also served two NHL stints as assistant/associate coach of the Vancouver Canucks (1999-06) and associate coach of the Los Angeles Kings (2006-08). With Johnston’s help, Vancouver made four straight trips to the postseason and won the Northwest Division crown in 2003-04. He has represented his country multiple times internationally, including serving as assistant coach of Canada’s 1998 Olympic Team. As an assistant/associate coach for Team Canada, he has won five medals (2 gold; 2 silver; 1 bronze) at the World Championships and two gold medals at the World Junior Championships. Among the players he has coached with Canada are Jonathan Toews, Ryan Getzlaf, Chris Kunitz, Martin Brodeur, Jarome Iginla, Rob Blake and Martin St. Louis. Johnston has authored three books with former NHL player Ryan Walter: “Simply the Best: Insights and Strategies from Great Hockey Coaches”, “Simply the Best: Players on Performance” and “Hockey Plays and Strategies”. RICK TOCCHET ASSISTANT COACH

Rick Tocchet is in his first season as an assistant coach of the Penguins. Tocchet was hired as an assistant coach by Tampa Bay in July, 2008 and was elevated to interim head coach on Nov. 14 of that year. He was named head coach following the ‘08-09 season, where he remained in that position until 2010. Tocchet began his coaching career as an assistant with the Colorado Avalanche for two years (2002-04) before spending one season (‘05-06) with the Phoenix Coyotes. A veteran of 18 NHL seasons, including parts of three seasons with the Penguins from 1992-94, Tocchet won a Stanley Cup championship with Pittsburgh in 1992. The 4-time NHL All-Star (1989, ‘90, ‘91, ‘93) played 1,144 career NHL games and totaled 440 goals, 952 points and 2,972 penalty minutes in his NHL career. GARY AGNEW ASSISTANT COACH

Gary Agnew is in his first season as an assistant coach with the Penguins. Prior to joining Pittsburgh, Agnew was an assistant coach for the St. Louis Blues for two seasons from 2012-14, helping the Blues win the fifth-most games in the NHL during that span (81). Agnew spent four years as an assistant coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets from 2006-10, where he helped the Blue Jackets earn a postseason berth for the first time in franchise history in 2008-09. As head coach of the American Hockey League’s Syracuse Crunch from 2000-06, Agnew won a franchise-record 220 games, and he led Syracuse to its first-ever division title in 2001-02. He also has 14 years of coaching experience in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), including 11 as a head coach. He has won over 350 career OHL games with London (1989-94, ‘97-00), Kingston (1994-97) and Oshawa (2011-12). Agnew was named OHL Coach of the Year twice — in 1993 and ’98. MIKE BALES GOALTENDING COACH

Mike Bales is in his second season as the Penguins goaltending coach after serving the previous two seasons as the teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s goaltending development coach from 2011-13. Under his guidance, Marc-Andre Fleury won 39 games in 2013-14 and tied his career high by recording five shutouts. Bales was also key to Jeff Zatkoffâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s development in his first NHL season where he posted a 12-6-2 record, 2.61 GAA and .912 save percentage. Bales, a native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, spent 18 seasons playing professionally from 1992-2010, including stints in the NHL with Boston and Ottawa. Bales also saw action with teams in the AHL, IHL, Germany, Sweden and Northern Ireland. He was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the fifth round (105th overall) of the 1990 NHL Draft. Before turning pro, Bales played three collegiate seasons with Ohio State University of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) from 1989-92. TRAVIS WILLIAMS CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

Travis Williams is in his fourth season as chief operating officer of the Penguins, overseeing finance, legal affairs, technology, business development and arena operations while reporting directly to CEO/president David Morehouse. Williams joined the Penguins in 2008 as senior vice president of business affairs/general counsel and oversaw the construction and development of CONSOL Energy Center — bringing the project to completion on time and under budget. He is the organization’s liaison with building manager AEG Facilities and works closely with AEG on all arena-related events and initiatives. In recent years, CONSOL Energy Center has hosted such national events as the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Second and Third Rounds, the 2012 NHL Draft, the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four and the 2014 U.S. Gymnastics Championships. Williams also is the Penguins’ point man on the development of the former Civic Arena site and the construction of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry. Williams graduated from Penn State University and received a Juris Doctorate from Duquesne University, summa cum laude. He lives in Nevillewood with his wife, Nichole, and their six children.

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 40th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK COLOR ANALYST

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 12th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

After a 17-year career as the Penguins beat writer for the Washington Observer-Reporter, Bob Grove joined the team’s radio broadcasts in 1998 as a frequent studio host/co-host and is now in his seventh season as full-time host of the pre- and post-game broadcasts and intermissions on the Penguins Hockey Network. Grove wrote Pittsburgh Penguins: The Official History of the First 30 Years in 1997 and has contributed game notes to GOAL Magazine inserts or IceTime programs for every Pittsburgh home game since 1986. He was also a contributor to the second edition of Total Hockey and to The Game I’ll Never Forget. He is a senior writer covering hockey for the Pittsburgh Sports Report and also hosts Bob Grove’s Hot Stove on Penguins Radio 24/7.

Steve Kolbe enters his second season with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Kolbe spent 14 seasons (1997-2011) as the play-by-play broadcaster for the Washington Capitals, broadcasting over 1,100 games. His voice has been heard internationally on the NHL Network, XM Radio, NHL Radio, and ESPN. Kolbe broadcast the Stanley Cup Finals in 1998 and the NHL Winter Classic in 2011, and he was featured on the NHL Network’s documentary Voices in 2008. A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Kolbe has over 25 years of broadcasting experience, and most recently has been a co-host of the Mid-Atlantic Sports Report on MASN (Mid Atlantic Sports Network) as well as talk show host for Major League Baseball coverage and NHL insider on CBS Radio 105.7 in Baltimore. Kolbe is a 1989 graduate of Michigan State University and earned a B.A. in telecommunications.

Here’s a look back at your 2014-15 Pittsburgh Penguins:

CHANGES Jim Rutherford took over as Penguins general manager on June 6, 2014. He had spent the previous 20 years as general manager of the Hartford/Carolina franchise and was the architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team. Before he moved to the business side of hockey, Rutherford played as a goaltender in the NHL for 13 seasons — including three seasons with the Penguins. Bill Guerin was named assistant general manager that same day. The former Penguins forward, who helped the team win the Stanley Cup in 2009, had spent the previous three seasons as the Penguins player development coach. Guerin brought youth and energy with him as well as a passion for the team. Rutherford and his staff gave the team a makeover from top to bottom, starting with the coaches. Mike Johnston, who had spent the past six years as head coach/GM of the Western Hockey League’s Portland Winterhawks, was named Penguins head coach on June 25. Rick Tocchet and Gary Agnew were named assistants. All three coaches brought previous NHL coaching experience to the table. When it came to the players, there was a lot of turnover. The Penguins lost a number of guys from last season’s roster, including James Neal, Jussi Jokinen, Tanner Glass, Lee Stempniak, Joe Vitale, Brooks Orpik, Matt Niskanen and Deryk Engelland. continued on page 78

Other players who took the ice for the Penguins during the regular season but were later traded were Marcel Goc, Rob Klinkhammer and Zach Sill. That means many of the players on the team the Penguins are fielding this postseason are donning black and gold for the first time in their careers. Or for the second, if you’re talking about Ben Lovejoy, who was reacquired from Anaheim at the trade deadline. They are forwards Blake Comeau, Steve Downie, Patric Hornqvist, Maxim Lapierre, David Perron, Nick Spaling and Daniel Winnik; defensemen Ian Cole, Christian Ehrhoff and Derrick Pouliot; and goalie Thomas Greiss.

NOTABLE INJURIES

Talented young blueliner Olli Maatta just couldn’t catch a break this season. First, he underwent shoulder surgery on May 22 and worked incredibly hard all summer to rehab so that he would be ready for opening night on Oct. 8 — which he was. Unfortunately, on Nov. 4 Maatta had to undergo a surgical procedure to remove a cancerous tumor from his thyroid gland. He made a fast recovery, rejoining the lineup just two weeks after the surgery. But Maatta was yet again knocked out of the lineup as quickly as he bounced back. In December, he was diagnosed with the mumps, from which he recovered.

But while all of this was going on, the 20-year-old was dealing with another shoulder injury. He spent about a month trying to rehab it so he could avoid going under the knife again, but ended up needing season-ending surgery on Jan. 14. Meanwhile, Pascal Dupuis — who has long been a solid brick in the Penguins foundation — was diagnosed with a blood clot in his lung in November. He has been ruled out for the rest of the season. The clot developed in his leg and moved to his lung and is the second one that he has developed. Last January he was also diagnosed with a blood clot shortly after he suffered torn ligaments in his knee. He spent months on blood thinners while recovering from the surgery and rehabilitating before getting cleared to return to the lineup in October. And the most unusual affliction to plague the Penguins — and the NHL as a whole — was the mumps. Maatta, Greiss, Downie, Sidney Crosby and Beau Bennett were all diagnosed during December and January. Altogether the Penguins had a total of 343 man-games lost.

FLOWER BLOOMS Franchise goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury was named the Penguins’ MVP after a terrific season. “[Flower]’s play has just been unbelievable,” defenseman Kris Letang said. Fleury — who signed a four-year contract extension a few weeks before he turned 30-years old back in November — won 34 games, finished first in the NHL with 10 shutouts and played in his second All-Star Game back in January. continued on page 80

He earned career win No. 300 on Nov. 24 vs. Boston, becoming the third-youngest (29 years, 361 days) and third-fastest (547 games) goaltender in league history to reach the milestone. The netminder recorded back-to-back shutouts on Oct. 30Nov. 1 and Feb. 4-6 as well as a 165:06 minute shutout sequence from Feb. 1-11. He was the backbone of the team at the tail end of the season in particular, working overtime with just five defensemen in front of him for a number of games and even starting a back-to-back set against the Islanders and Sabres as the Penguins fought to earn their ninth consecutive playoff berth — which they did on the strength of Fleury’s 28-save blanking of Buffalo. His dependability on the ice transferred into the room. Fleury was awarded the Player’s Player Award by his teammates, an honor that goes to “the player they feel exemplifies leadership for the team both on and off of the ice and who is dedicated to teamwork.”

SIDSATIONAL The competition for the Art Ross trophy down the final stretch of the season was a tight one. Sidney Crosby, John Tavares and Alex Ovechkin were all at the top of the pack. POWER PLAY The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE completed four more dek hockey rinks for local communities in 2014 as their first-of-its-kind Project Power Play program entered its third year. The new rinks are located in Graham Park in Cranberry Township, Settlerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cabin in Robinson, Renzie Park in McKeesport and North Park in McCandless. Project Power Play is a $2.3 million initiative designed to build 12 dek hockey rinks in Pittsburgh and surrounding communities over a four-year period. Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield is leading the way by providing $1.5 million in funding, with the Penguins Foundation contributing $800,000. The rinks are multi-purpose courts measuring 155 feet by 75 feet. They include a premier dasher board system, scoreboard, player benches covered by metal shelters, a penalty box, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment. Project Power Play was introduced in 2012, with the first two rinks being built in Banksville Park and Lewis Park in Hazelwood. Four more rinks were added in 2013 at Brookline Memorial Park, Hosanna House Sherwood Event Center in Wilkinsburg, Riverside Park in Oakmont and Richland Community Park. The City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and surrounding communities are providing the land as well as maintenance services, lighting and additional support. Two more rinks will be built in 2015, bringing the total to 12.

FORMAT

The NHL playoffs are division-based with an added wild-card system. There are 16 total postseason berths, eight for each conference. That means the Western Conference has 14 teams competing for eight playoff spots while the Eastern Conference has 16 teams competing for eight playoff spots. The top three teams in the Metropolitan Division and the top three teams from the Atlantic Division fill the first six spots. The remaining two spots (Nos. 7 and 8) are filled by the wild-card teams, who are the next two highest-placed finishers in each conference based on regular-season points and regardless of division. That means the Metropolitan Division could send five teams to the playoffs while the Atlantic sends three; or vice versa. Or they could each send four. Regardless, after the NHL’s realignment that went into effect for the 2013-14 season, the playoffs are now heavily based on divisional standings. So while the wild-card system makes it possible to play a team outside of the division in the opening round, it’s more likely that clubs will be playing the first two rounds against divisional foes. NHL.com explained the seeding best… “The seeding of the wild-card teams within each divisional playoff will be determined on the basis of regular-season points. The division winner with the most points in the conference will be matched against the wild-card team with the fewest points; the division winner with the second-most points in the conference will play the wild-card team with the second fewest points. The teams finishing second and third in each division will play in the first round of the playoffs. The winners of each series will play for berths in the conference championship series.”

Heads UP Pittsburgh, the first program of its kind and a blueprint copied by other NHL organizations, began in 2011 with baseline testing and parental education programs for youth hockey players. In 2012, the Penguins Foundation expanded the program to include athletes of all sports ages KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE 10 to 14. Since the programâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inception, over 13,000 athletes have been tested and over 33,000 people educated. In 2013 and 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine expanded the Heads UP Pittsburgh concussion awareness program to include a free neck strengthening kit and flexibility kit, respectively, to the first 2,000 participants during the testing periods. The new testing period for 2015 will begin in June. This year, we will be opening up the testing with the pediatric version for kids ages 6-9 years old. Free cognitive baseline testing will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Community College of Allegheny County once again will serve as host to testing at its Boyce, North, South and West Hills Center campuses along with UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side. Community College of Beaver County also joined the initiative as a new site for testing and education. The entire testing process takes about one hour. Certified athletic trainers from UPMC Sports Medicine supervise the program and testing. While the athletes are being tested, parents meet with the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion staff to learn about the Heads UP Pittsburgh program and how to handle concussions if they occur. HOCKEY IS FOR

EVERYONE For years Western Pennsylvania youth sports have been dominated by the likes of football, basketball and baseball. Recently however, the region has begun to see a change in preference and participation in sports. Hockey is rapidly becoming the most popular and fastest growing sport in the area. Success seen with the Pittsburgh Penguins on the NHL ice has surely created a demand and a certain excitement around the game, however the popularity of hockey goes well beyond the wins and world class talent the Penguins possess. A genuine love for the game is starting to sweep the area. Kids are beginning to play hockey at younger and younger ages thanks to the Little Penguins: Learn to Play Hockey program. This program will allow 1,000 kids, ages 4-8, to receive free head-to-toe gear all thanks to the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and DICKâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S Sporting Goods. Since it began in 2008-09 over 5,200 have been introduced to hockey through this program. Recently the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered together for Project PowerPlay, which will build 12 dek hockey rinks throughout Allegheny County over a threeyear period and allow local residents to play dek hockey for free. In 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation embarked on a new venture, Tablets in Education. This innovative, new program combined the latest in tablet technology with educational apps and content. With the assistance of the Allegheny Intermediate Unit (AIU3), 60 schools in Allegheny County were selected to participate in the first year of the program. In 2015, we expanded the program to the outlying counties and distributed Kindle Fire HD 7 tablets to over 60 additional schools. Each school enrolled in Tablets in Education received 20 Kindle Fire HD 7 tablets, a mobile charging station and 20 shock resistant covers. Each device was then loaded with over 50 educational apps, books and specialized content. In Phase 2 of the program, FedEx Ground generously donated $25,000 to be used toward apps geared towards Science and Technology. Apps are selected with the assistance of Common Sense Media and the professionals at the AIU3, providing more than $100,000 worth of content. The devices are designed to be utilized for unique educational programs, extended learning programs and programs for children with disabilities. The technology utilized in Tablets in Education is designed to enhance a childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s academic achievement while continuing to support their social development and relationships with adults and peers through the most critical years of an adolescentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s growth and development. A portion of the funding for this program was made possible by contributions through the EITC (Educational Improvement Tax Credit) program. ICEBURGH A delight for children of all ages, Iceburgh — the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins — not only provides fans with exciting game entertainment but this large, energetic bird can also be seen at a multitude of community events and elementary schools throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. Iceburgh arrived on the scene in 1992 and is a staple at all team events. During Penguins’ home games, fans most definitely notice the antics of Iceburgh leading sections of fans in cheers, greeting young children on the concourse or displaying his athleticism on-ice between periods. In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture Sudden Death. He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh wasted no time getting acquainted with his new home at CONSOL Energy Center in September of 2010. You can find Iceburgh sliding down stair banisters, dancing in the stands and tossing t-shirts to fans. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and recently performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. In addition to his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game, Iceburgh makes annual appearances at the Mascot Olympics held in Orlando, FL. Now in its third season, Pittsburgh Penguins Elite is one of the country’s premier youth hockey organizations. The funding provided by DICK’S Sporting Goods and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation has reduced player participation fees by nearly 35% annually. In addition, DICK’S Sporting Goods provides FREE game jerseys and socks, practice jerseys and socks, pant shells, warmups and equipment bags to players each season. After becoming the oldest player to score multiple goals What Would (two) in a playoff game at 41 Gary Roberts Do? years, 322 days in the Penguins’ 4-0 win over the Senators in Game One of the 2008 Eastern Conference quarterfinals, Gary Roberts threw a huge hit on an opposing player with 12 seconds left in regulation and was tossed from the remainder of the game after a scrum ensued. As he skated off, Roberts was surrounded by four Senators players and tried to fight all of them from the runway — much to the delight of the home crowd, who showered him with chants of “GA-RY! GA-RY!” as he eventually went to the locker room, yelling the whole way there. At that point in his career, Roberts was already legendary throughout the hockey community for his work ethic, commitment and dedication to his training and nutrition (as well as his veteran leadership), but his performance that night elevated him to cult hero status here in Pittsburgh. There were even bracelets made emblazoned with the letters WWGRD, which stands for “What Would Gary Roberts Do?” The phrase became legendary as well, so much so that Roberts jokingly referenced it after it was announced on March 11 that he would be returning to Pittsburgh to lead the Sports Performance Center at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry. continued on page 153

“Probably the WWGRD bracelets people have,” Roberts laughed when asked why he decided to come back. “My son is still walking around with those things. … How I was treated by the Pittsburgh Penguins organization, the fans and the media during my time as a player truly left a humbling mark on me. I fell in love with the fans and the organization. “Just every opportunity I get to come back to Pittsburgh, I’ve taken it and I’m thrilled to be getting this opportunity to join UPMC and the Sports Performance Center.” Here in Pittsburgh, Roberts will oversee the philosophy and office training regimen at a Sports Performance Center that will focus on hockey but encompass athletes of every sport. He will also consult with the full-time UPMC staff who, along with him, will work personally with players from every echelon of hockey as well as athletes of all ages and levels, including a morning program for business executives. It’s a big coup for UPMC to get the 48-year-old Roberts to be the “name, face and attitude” of the Sports Performance Center, as he developed what he called “a serious passion for preparation” after his career nearly ended at the age of 30 following two neck surgeries. Roberts was out of the league for 18 months before adapting a strict, rigorous new lifestyle that included many changes to his training techniques, strategies and diet and allowed him to return to the NHL and play the game he loved for 12 more years. continued on page 154

After retiring in 2009 after one year with Tampa Bay, Roberts began using that knowledge to train his Lightning teammate Steven Stamkos — who scored 50 goals the following season. From there, his client list grew and he ended up opening the Gary Roberts High Performance Centre in North York, Ontario. He’s become the best in the business, so when Penguins president and CEO David Morehouse and those involved in the hiring process started thinking of who they wanted in that role, Roberts’ name was the first that came to mind. “We thought about who’s the best at this, and it’s Gary Roberts,” Morehouse said. “And when we talked to him, he was interested. In a short period of time, he feels like he played for the Penguins for a long time. He became ingrained in the community here and I think he was happy to come back and have an opportunity to come back. He epitomizes everything we want to bring here to this facility and everything we as the Pittsburgh Penguins organization want to bring to Pittsburgh.” To be clear, Roberts will not be working with the Penguins in any official capacity. His focus will be solely on overseeing the performance training at the Sports Performance Center, which includes the programming, exercise selection, nutrition, and just plain old teaching. Roberts will continue to train individual NHL players and operate his facility outside of Toronto. He’ll spend a lot of time here initially, but once the Sports Performance Center is up and running, Roberts will commute down to Pittsburgh for about one week per month. “I’m in Toronto, but it’s only a five-hour drive for me to come down here so it’s not a big deal,” Roberts said. “It’s a real thrill for me to be part of a facility like this. It’s really coming together. It’s going to be a phenomenal place for people to become better educated, more fit and better prepared for their sport.”

Patric Hornqvist is very much at home in traffic. Hornqvist battles. Whether it’s near the blue paint of the goaltender’s crease, along the wall or in the corner, Hornqvist never stops. “That’s probably one of my strengths,” Hornqvist said after the Penguins beat host Buffalo 2-0 to close out the regular season April 11. “To always go, and always battle. Some nights are better than others. “But that’s the kind of person I am, and now I want to show that in the playoffs, too.” Hornqvist’s efforts at Buffalo helped the Penguins reach the post-season despite losing five straight going into the game with the Sabres. Hornqvist won a puck along the left wall and slid a cross-rink pass to Daniel Winnik, who fed Brandon Sutter for a tap-in at the left post of the Buffalo net. The goal came at 8:26 of the third period, gave the Penguins a 2-0 lead and enabled them to exhale. The Penguins had lost the previous night to the New York Islanders, going down 3-1 at CONSOL Energy Center. “It was really tough mentally,” Hornqvist said. “After the game last night, everybody was down a little bit. But we knew we had a great opportunity here today. continued on page 163

“Not scoring in the first period maybe started getting in our heads a little bit. But I thought we stuck with it really well today. We played the same way all three periods. When we Patric Hornqvist scored that first goal, we got a little relief.” Sutter also scored the Penguins’ first goal at Buffalo, breaking a tension-filled 0-0 tie at 14:23 of the second period. “When we put in that second goal, the bench could breathe a little bit,” Hornqvist continued. “After that, it was just play out the game. “And now, the fun part starts. When the playoffs start, everybody starts at zero. Go in there, and it’s going to be a battle. Everybody knows that.” Hornqvist, 28, has been battling all year. This is the Swedish right winger’s first season with the Penguins. He joined the team in an off-season trade that sent James Neal to Nashville. Hornqvist (5-foot-11, 189 pounds) dealt with his share of injuries. But he played 64 games, compiling 25 goals and 26 assists. He was plus-12. Hornqvist finished the regular season strong, racking up 19 points in his last 20 games. Hornqvist had played in 24 career NHL playoff games (all with the Predators) going into the Penguins’ first-round series with the New York Rangers. He had three goals and five assists. The matchup vs. the Rangers marks the first time the Penguins have been the lower-seeded team in a playoff series since the 2009 Stanley Cup Final against Detroit. But, given the Penguins’ clumsy conclusion to the regular season, the pressure is hardly off. “The knife is not at our head right away,” Hornqvist said. “We get a little relief. We have 3-4 days for rest, and then we get going after it. “Obviously, everything starts at zero when we play the Rangers. We know they have a hell of a team. But we have a good team here, too. “The good thing for us is, it feels like we’ve been in the playoffs for two weeks already. SERIES STORYLINES PENGUINS VS. RANGERS By: Michelle Crechiolo

After the New York Rangers eliminated the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Second Round of last year’s postseason, the two teams are playing each other again this year in the First Round of the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Here are a few of the main storylines to follow as the series progresses:

RANGERS’ DOMINANCE OF NHL In order to advance, the Penguins will have to find a way to win four games against the best team in the NHL. After advancing all the way to the Stanley Cup Final last spring, the Rangers didn’t have the strongest start this fall — going winless in 12 of their first 24 games. But starting with their 4-3 overtime win against the Penguins on Dec. 8, the Rangers started rolling and didn’t stop. They finished with a 53-22-7 mark for a franchise-record 113 points, which earned them their first Presidents’ Trophy since 1994 — which is the same year they went on to win their last Stanley Cup. The reason for the Rangers’ success is their depth in all areas of the game. They’ve always had an excellent defense backstopped by world-class netminder Henrik Lundqvist and strengthened with the additions of Keith Yandle and Dan Boyle, but this year their offense has been just as elite as the Rangers finished the regular season ranked third in the NHL in that category. Their first line has

driven their production, as Rick Nash, Derick Brassard and Mats Zuccarello have been together for the majority of the year and have developed chemistry together. And unfortunately for the Penguins, those three players have dominated them over the last year.

DEPLETED BLUE LINE HANDLING NYR’S DEPTH A Penguins blue line that’s already been without Olli Maatta since November and has had to play with just five guys on numerous occasions down the stretch may be forced to play the majority of the series without top-four defensemen Kris Letang and Christian Ehrhoff. As if that wasn’t a big enough challenge, the Penguins are facing a team whose scoring depth has burned them over the past year. The Rangers get contributions from all four of their lines, which is critical at this time of year. Head coach Alain Vigneault and his players pointed to that as the biggest reason for their run to the Stanley Cup Final last spring. While star players like Nash and Martin St. Louis are always players to watch, it’s actually Brassard who has been the biggest thorn in the Penguins’ side as the 27-year-old center entered the series with an active eight-game point streak against Pittsburgh dating back to the beginning of last season — not to mention he finished with four goals and seven points in their seven-game series last year. The Penguins will have to figure out a way to contain those guys and the rest of the Rangers’ attack if they want to win this series, and that’s not going to be easy to do. But the Penguins can be confident knowing they have Marc-Andre Fleury between the pipes as he has been terrific all season long. The 30-year-old netminder is now in his prime as a goaltender and has been the Penguins’ MVP through everything they’ve dealt with this season — especially down the stretch playing behind an incredibly depleted blue line. He’s never been more calm, steady and consistent and has been a rock back there, which is huge for the Penguins. continued on page 177

LUNDQVIST Rangers fans saw the season flash before their eyes when franchise netminder Henrik Lundqvist took a puck to the throat in the second period of a game against Carolina on Jan. 31. But while he ended up missing 25 games over two months with a vascular injury, the 31-year-old netminder returned on March 28 against Boston. He rounded back into form over the last two weeks of the season, finishing the year with wins in five of his next six games. Lundqvist, who won the Vezina Trophy in 2012 and has been a finalist four times, is obviously an elite goaltender in the league who has built an incredible reputation. But heading into last year’s playoffs, the majority of his success had been in the regular season as Lundqvist had yet to win the Stanley Cup or even reach a Final. Well, he certainly answered any questions about his big-game ability as Lundqvist led his team to the Final last season. And while the Rangers fell in five games to the Los Angeles Kings, Lundqvist did his part — standing on his head and coming up with the big saves when his team needed them — to get them there, as the Penguins found out the hard way in Game Seven. Lundqvist is definitely a tough opposing netminder for the Penguins to draw the way they struggled to produce down the stretch, but as captain Sidney Crosby put it, “It’s no secret this time of year you’re going to have to really fight to get to the front of the net and any team you’re playing at this point is going to have good goaltending, you don’t get this far without it.”

This year, his mask features a “mean flower” in honor of his last name and nickname. “The flower was my idea,” said Stephane Bergeron, the mask’s artist. “Marc-Andre always likes to participate in the design also, so the big ‘Pittsburgh’ on the jawline was his idea. “For Marc-Andre, I can tell because I’ve known him for a while, his design is very, very important. Each detail is there for a reason.” Fleury has a few consistent illustrations each season. On the back, there are the initials of his four late grandparents, a Stanley Cup to commemorate the one he won in 2009 and an etching of his daughter’s name, Estelle, in pink letters. His nickname “Flower” is also scripted on one of the petals on the front of the mask. There’s a cluster of symbols on one side of the rear that include a fleur-de-lis, the symbol of Quebec. Behind it is the Canadian maple leaf. Fleury has been working with the Quebec-based Bergeron and his company, Griffe Originale, for 15 years. “Sometimes we try to come up with new ideas and new stuff to do,” Fleury said. “So more sketches, more designs, so sometimes it takes a while. But now I’m kind of running out of ideas so it goes pretty quick.” Each mask is a sentimental artifact in its own right. Each one represents a different chapter in a goalie’s hockey career. “Since maybe peewee I’ve kept all my masks,” Fleury said. “I have some here in Pittsburgh at my house and some in Montreal too. Not everybody [does it]. When I was younger, another kid was doing it so I started doing it too and I just thought it was a neat idea. A new souvenir to add.”

OVIE AGAIN: The Caps’ Alex Ovechkin scored 41 of his NHL-leading 53 goals in the final 55 games of the regular season on the way to his third consecutive Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy and the fifth of his career. Ovechkin also led the league with a career-high and franchiserecord 25 power-play goals. FINISHING KICK: Jamie Benn of Dallas captured his first Art Ross Trophy and the first in Minnesota North Stars/Dallas Stars history with a stretch run that included 10 points (5+5) in his last three games. Benn completed a four-point effort in the regular-season finale

AN NHL FIRST: Ottawa became the first team to reach the playoffs despite facing a 14-point deficit for qualification at any point of a season. The Senators got there in large part thanks to a 23-4-4 record over their final 31 regular-season games. SHINING IN FLORIDA: Jaromir Jagr closed with 18 points (6+12) in 20 games with the Panthers. Jagr exited the season ranked fourth on the NHL’s all-time points list (1,802), fifth in all-time goals (722) and sixth on the league’s all-time assists list (1,080). He also extended his NHL record for gamewinning goals to 129. The trio of Jagr, Jonathan Huberdeau (6+15) and Aleksander Barkov (7+8) combined for 54 points in 20 games (19+35) after Jagr was acquired on Feb. 27.

SCHOLARSHIPS NOW AVAILABLE The Pittsburgh Penguins continue their efforts to assist high school seniors in the western Pennsylvania area to further their education through their scholarship programs. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation sponsors one Bob Johnson Memorial Scholarship and a maximum of 20 Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation Scholarships annually. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation has expanded its scholarship program for students who attend a Pittsburgh Public School or select school districts within Allegheny County and will award a maximum of 20 scholarships for the 2014-15 school year. Of that number, a minimum of three scholarships will be directed to students from Pittsburgh Public Schools. The scholarships are gifted to high school seniors who have demonstrated academic achievement, community service, and participation in school activities. Each Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation Scholarship is valued at $1,500 for the first year of a studentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s college career, and an additional $1,000 will be awarded for the studentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s second year of college if a 3.0 GPA is maintained and a minimum of 24 credit hours are earned. In 2005, the Pittsburgh Penguins Alumni Association created its $2,000 scholarship for a western Pennsylvania high school senior who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, good citizenship, school and community involvement, and an intense love for the game of hockey. The student should also showcase an on-ice hustle created by achievement beyond his/her talent level. GAME MISCONDUCT PENALTIES A new Game Misconduct category will be created. Clipping, charging, elbowing, interference, kneeing, head-butting and butt-ending move from the general category into the same category as boarding and checking from behind (Physical Fouls), whereby a player who incurs two such game misconducts in this category would now be automatically suspended for one game.

PENALTY SHOT The Spin-O-Rama move, as described in Section 24.2 of the 2013-14 NHL Rule Book, will no longer be permitted either in Penalty Shot situations or in the Shootout.

RULE 38

VIDEO GOAL JUDGE Video review will be expanded in the following areas: * Rule 38.4 (viii) has been modified to allow broader discretion to Hockey Operations to assist the referees in determining the legitimacy of all potential goals (e.g., to ensure they are good hockey goals). The revised Rule will allow Hockey Operations to correct a broader array of situations where video review clearly establishes that a goal or no goal call on the ice has been made in error. The new expanded rule will also allow Hockey Operations to provide guidance to referees on goal and potential goal plays where the continued on page 198

referee has blown his whistle (or intended to blow his whistle) after having lost sight of the puck. * In reviewing Kicked in Goals, Hockey Operations will require more demonstrable video evidence of a distinct kicking motion in order to overrule a goal call on the ice, or to uphold a no goal call on the ice.

RULE 57 TRIPPING

The rule relating to Tripping will be revised to specifically provide that a two minute minor penalty will be assessed when a defending player dives and trips an attacking player with his body/arm/shoulder, regardless of whether the defending player is able to make initial contact with the puck. But, in situations where a penalty shot might otherwise be appropriate, if the defending player dives and touches the puck first (before the trip), no penalty shot will be awarded. (In such cases, the resulting penalty will be limited to a two-minute minor penalty for tripping.)

RULE 76 FACE-OFFS

To curb delay tactics on face-offs after icing infractions, in situations where the defending team is guilty of a face-off violation, following an icing, the defending player who is initially lined up for the face-off will be given a warning, but will be required to remain in the circle to take the face-off. A second face-off violation by the defending team in such situation will result in a two minute minor bench penalty.

RULE 64

DIVING / EMBELLISHMENT The supplementary discipline penalties associated with Rule 64.3 (Diving/Embellishment) will be revised to bring attention to and more seriously penalize players (and teams) who repeatedly dive and embellish in an attempt to draw penalties. * Teams will switch ends prior to the start of overtime in the regular season. * The entire ice surface will undergo a dry scrape prior to the start of overtime in the regular season. * The procedure requiring the head coach to submit a list of the first three shooters in the shoot-out has been eliminated.

RULE 85

PUCK OUT OF BOUNDS There have been further rule changes made relating to face-off location to avoid penalizing teams for plays intended to create bona fide scoring opportunities. Specifically, the following are categories of plays where face-offs will remain in the attacking zone despite the fact that the attacking team was technically responsible for the stoppage in play: Shots at the net by a player on the attacking team where: (i) the shot breaks the glass; (ii) the shot goes off the side of the net and deflects out of play; (iii) the shot goes off the dasher boards or glass and deflects out of play; (iv) the shot is tipped or deflected out of play by a teammate; and (v) the shot becomes wedged in or on the exterior of the goal net. In addition, the following rule change will be enacted for the 2014 preseason and may be continued for the 2014-15 regular season if approved by the League and the NHLPA.

BUILDING INFORMATION ALCOHOL Guests of CONSOL Energy Center must be 21 years of age or older to purchase and/or consume alcoholic beverages. ARAMARK reserves the right to check proof of legal drinking age. There is a maximum of TWO (2) alcoholic beverages per purchase at all concession stands and portable vendors. For Pittsburgh Penguins games, all alcohol sales within the arena will conclude at the beginning of the third period. Individual concerts and events are determined on a show-by-show basis.

ATM MACHINES For the convenience of our fans, ATMs are available in CONSOL Energy Center: First Niagara Bank - Outside section 119 and 230, and in the lobby of the Trib Total Media Gate PNC Bank on PNC Legends Level - Outside of party suite 44 and suite 13

BAGS, BACKPACKS AND PURSES For security purposes, only small personal bags (purses, baby or diaper bags, etc.) will be permitted inside CONSOL Energy Center and all items are subject to search upon entrance. Large bags, coolers, backpacks and sealed packages, including gifts for performers and/or athletes of any kind are not permitted unless otherwise noted on the individual event page.

BANNERS AND SIGNS Banners and signs are permitted for most events, providing they are appropriate, as deemed by building management. Signs must not be commercial in nature or utilize wood, metal or other types of objects for support. They cannot be hung or fastened anywhere in the building or in any way obstruct another guest’s view or building signage.

AUTOMOTIVE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM AAA will have a “Puck Truck” at all Penguins home games. The “Puck Truck” is available to assist patrons that have trouble with their vehicles in CONSOL Energy Center lots only. Fans can call 1.800.AAA.HELP after the start of the third period.

BABY CHANGING STATIONS Baby changing stations are available in all restrooms, located on all seating levels of CONSOL Energy Center.

In return for safe and sober transportation of their group from CONSOL Energy Center, the designated driver will receive a coupon redeemable for a complimentary soft drink during the game.

DOORS OPEN Doors generally open one (1) hour prior to the start of an event at CONSOL Energy Center, including Pittsburgh Penguins games. Please check the individual event page for further information. CONSOL Energy Center has a no re-entry policy; once you leave the building during an event, you will not be permitted to return.

EMERGENCY EVACUATION In the event of an emergency, CONSOL Energy Center staff will utilize the public address (PA) system

FAMILY RESTROOMS Family restrooms are available on all levels of CONSOL Energy Center near sections 106/107, 108, 115, 121, 213, 225, party suite 44 and suite 13.

FIRST AID There are two (2) UPMC First Aid Stations, one on each level of CONSOL Energy Center. UPMC First Aid is located adjacent to the Guest Services office outside section 104 and behind the concession stand at section 232.

FOOD AND BEVERAGES No food or beverages of any kind are permitted to be brought into CONSOL Energy Center. Concession stands located throughout the arena sell a wide variety of food, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. WHEELCHAIRS A limited number of wheelchairs are available for transporting guests that are disabled to their seating location. Guests can be transported from the gates to their seats. If a wheelchair is needed for the duration of the event, guests must supply their own wheelchairs. Wheelchairs cannot be reserved in advance.
