AROUND THE NHL RANGERS GAIN ONE BUT LOSE ANOTHER On the same night that captain Chris Drury returned to the lineup after missing 31 contests with two separate breaks in the same finger, the New York Rangers lost alternate captain Ryan Callahan to a broken left hand on Dec. 14 against the Penguins. The forward, ranked second on the team with 23 points, suffered the injury after blocking a shot from the stick of Penguins’ Ryan Callahan defenseman Kris Letang early in the first period. The Rangers, who won the game, 4-1, did not provide a timeline for his return. Prior to the injury, Callahan ranked first among NHL forwards with 40 blocked shots and was second in the league with 128 hits. “I just feel really bad for him,” Drury said, who logged 14:32 of ice time in the game. “He is a huge part of our team and he’s having a great year. It’s hard to see a guy like that go down. It’s not a good feeling.”

LINDBACK SPURRING PREDATORS’ STREAK As of Dec. 16, the Nashville Predators were 7-0-2 in their last nine contests, with their last regulation loss coming on Nov. 26. The red-hot Predators have been bolstered by the superior goaltending of rookie Anders Lindback, who assumed starting duties after star netminder Pekka Rinne suffered a left knee injury on Dec. 3. Lindback, 22, posted a 5-0-1 record from Anders Lindback Dec. 4 to Dec. 15 and has allowed just seven goals in five starts. During that stretch, he earned two-consecutive shutouts, starting by making 22 saves in a 3-0 whitewash of the Florida Panthers on Dec. 11. He followed that up with an outstanding 28-save performance in a 5-0 blanking of the New York Islanders on Dec. 13.

Henrik and Daniel Sedin are repeating their stellar offensive performances of last season, where the two finished the season ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in team scoring for the Vancouver Canucks. Daniel paces this year’s squad with 15 goals, 21 assists and 37 points, while Henrik trails his brother with five goals, 31 assists (good for first in the league) and 36 points. Their combined 71-point total is the most among Western Conference teammates so far this season and has helped Vancouver to a 17-8-4 record and 38 points as of Dec. 16. 8

RON BURKLE Ron Burkle has now added a new arena — Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center — to his tremendous list of accomplishments in the business world. Burkle, widely recognized as one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 12th season as co-owner of the Penguins. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his role in negotiations for the new arena deal. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League and the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy. He has received numerous awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year and the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year award.

MARIO LEMIEUX Mario Lemieux will always be remembered for the magic he created on the ice, but one of the crowning achievements of his remarkable business career came this season — the opening of CONSOL Energy Center, home of the Penguins and Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue. Even before the reality of CONSOL Energy Center, Lemieux and coowner Ron Burkle had turned the Penguins into a premier NHL franchise. The Penguins have been named No. 1 in Fan Relations by ESPN the Magazine, sold out a team-record 166 straight games, sold out every suite for three straight seasons and established records for local television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits. Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVPs trophies and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP, in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $8 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario, his wife Nathalie and their four children live in Sewickley. For extended bios please visit pittsburghpenguins.com 10

DAVID MOREHOUSE Pittsburgh native David Morehouse was named CEO of the Penguins in September and leads the team into an exciting new era at CONSOL Energy Center. Morehouse had served as team president since 2007, overseeing ticket sales, marketing, corporate sales, communications and brand development, as well as representing the team in corporate relations and governmental affairs. Under his leadership the Penguins have become one of the top organizations in professional sports — ranked No. 1 in Fan Relations and No. 5 overall as a franchise among 122 pro teams in North America by ESPN The Magazine. As team president, Morehouse implemented a brand strategy that featured a new commitment to marketing, fan interaction and community outreach, as well as a targeted focus on the team’s young fan demographic. Morehouse grew up in the Beechview section on Pittsburgh. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University, and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Vanessa, have three children and live in Bell Acres. For extended bios please visit pittsburghpenguins.com

RAY SHERO Ray Shero, 48, was named GM of the Pittsburgh Penguins on May 25, 2006. His fresh ideas and calm but firm management style helped transform the Penguins from a team that did not qualify for the playoffs in 2005-06 to one that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2007-08 and won the Cup in 2008-09. One of his first acts as GM was to declare a goal of building a team that could compete for championships on a yearly basis. He revamped the team’s hockey operations staff and structure, upgraded professional and amateur scouting, added a team operations director and opened new lines of communication with the business side of the organization. Ray built his hockey sense and managerial style during 14 seasons as an NHL assistant general manager — six with the Ottawa Senators and eight with the Nashville Predators. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University and was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1982. He spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. The native of St. Paul, Minn. is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.

JASON BOTTERILL Jason Botterill enters his second full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position on May 22, 2009 by general manager Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockeyrelated matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top-minor league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 34, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins. Before joining Pittsburgh, Botterill worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was a first-round draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in 1994 and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four seasons at the University of Michigan, where he earned his MBA, and helped lead the Wolverines to the NCAA title in 1996. He also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in 1994, 1995 and 1996, helping his team win gold medals in all three tournaments. He resides in Pittsburgh along with his wife, Andrea. For extended bios please visit pittsburghpenguins.com 14

DAN BYLSMA In just one-plus seasons behind the bench, Dan Bylsma has already become one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history. After being promoted to Penguins head coach in February 2009, Bylsma, 40, directed the team to its third Stanley Cup in franchise history — a feat previously accomplished by legendary coaches “Badger” Bob Johnson and Scott Bowman. In the process Bylsma became the 14th rookie head coach, and just the fourth in the past 50 years, to capture the Stanley Cup. Of those 14, only Montreal’s Al MacNeil (1970-71) took over mid-season. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons as a right winger with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-2004. He played 429 NHL regular-season games, recording 19 goals and 62 points, and also played in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final with Anaheim. Bylsma was an assistant coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for two seasons from 2006-08 and was named head coach at the start of the 2008-09 season. He went 35-16-1-2 in 54 games with WB/S before being promoted to Pittsburgh. He played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son and reside in the North Hills.

TONY GRANATO Tony Granato, 46, begins his second season on the Penguins’ coaching staff. Granato, among his many responsibilities, works with the Penguins’ forwards and penalty killing units. He oversaw the NHL’s ninth-ranked penalty killing group with an 84.1-percent success rate, and second best on the road at 85.3 percent. Prior to joining the Penguins, Granato spent six seasons behind the bench for the Colorado Avalanche and served two stints as Avalanche head coach from 2002-04 and 2008-09. Granato compiled a 215-104-17-16 record and led Colorado to a Northwest Division title in 2003. Granato played 13 seasons in the NHL with the NY Rangers, Los Angeles and San Jose. In 1997, he was the recipient of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for overcoming a near career-ending brain injury. In 773 career games, the feisty forward posted 248 goals, 492 points and 1,425 penalty minutes. He appeared in 79 career postseason games and helped lead Los Angeles to a Stanley Cup Final berth in 1993. Granato played four years at the University of Wisconsin and was inducted into the Badgers’ Hall of Fame in 2000. Granato also played for the U.S. National team in 1987-88 and represented his country in the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary. Tony and his wife, Linda, are the parents of four children and reside in the South Hills. For extended bios please visit pittsburghpenguins.com 16

TODD REIRDEN Todd Reirden, 39, joined Pittsburgh’s coaching staff on July 31, 2010 after coaching with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins the previous two seasons. Reirden, an NHL defenseman for parts of five seasons, works closely with the team’s defensemen. Reirden, completed his first full season as WB/S head coach in 200910, leading a young and inexperienced team to an impressive 41-34-2-3 record, finishing third in the East Division, and a berth in the Calder Cup playoffs. Prior to joining the Penguins organization, Reirden spent one season as an assistant coach with the Bowling Green Falcons (CCHA) — his alma mater. He was a teammate of Bylsma’s during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons at Bowling Green. Selected by New Jersey in the 12th round (242nd overall) of the 1990 NHL Enrty Draft, Reirden played professionally for 13 seasons, retiring after the 2006-07 campaign with Graz EC of the Austrian Hockey League. He appeared in 183 NHL games with Edmonton, St. Louis, Atlanta and Phoenix, recording 46 points (11+35) and 181 penalty minutes. Todd and his wife, Shelby, have one son.

GILLES MELOCHE Former NHL goaltender Gilles Meloche is in his fifth season as the Penguins’ full-time goaltending coach and 25th with the organization. Meloche has been instrumental in developing Marc-Andre Fleury into a Stanley Cup-winning netminder. Meloche served as a Penguins scout from 1989-2006 and also doubled as a goaltending coach/consultant during much of that time. He was also part of the staff when the Penguins won Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992. A native of Montreal, Quebec, Meloche spent 18 seasons as an NHL goaltender with Chicago, California, Cleveland, Minnesota and Pittsburgh. He played the final three seasons of his career in Pittsburgh following a 1985 trade. Meloche appeared in 788 NHL games during his career, posting a record of 270-351-131 with a 3.64 goals-against average. In 45 career playoff games, he posted a 21-19 record and a 3.48 goals-against average. Gilles and his wife, Sophie, reside in Pittsburgh. His son, Eric, is a pro player who was a member of the Penguins organization from 2000-04.

OUR NEW HOME CONSOL Energy Center opened in August, 2010 as Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue — home of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins as well as other professional and collegiate sports, concerts, children’s shows, skating shows and more. It replaces the old Civic Arena/ Mellon Arena, which had operated since 1961 and was home of the Penguins from their inception in CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for 1967. It was the oldest arena in the the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins. National Hockey League. “CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins,” said David Morehouse, CEO of the hockey team. “With open concourses, comfortable seating, cutting-edge technology, a state-of-the-art scoreboard and sound system, and an extensive array of food and beverage options, it is a spectacular symbol for the Pittsburgh of the 21st century.” CONSOL Energy Center was completed on time and under budget, thanks to the combined efforts of architectural firms Populous and Astorino; the owner’s representative, ICON; the construction company, PJ Dick/Hunt; and the excellent construction workers and skilled trade workers of Western Pennsylvania. The new arena seats 18,087 for hockey, 19,000 for basketball and almost 20,000 for concerts. It is a green building and is the first NHL arena to attain LEED Gold certification. Even before its doors had opened, CONSOL Energy Center landed commitments from shows that would have bypassed the old arena — the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament first and second rounds, the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four, and back-to-back concerts by music legend Paul McCartney. McCartney, who first played Pittsburgh with the Beatles in 1964 but hadn’t performed here since 1990, christened the new arena with a grand opening concert on August 18, 2010. In its first season of operation, CONSOL Energy Center also will be home to the Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League — bringing indoor football back to the city for the first time in almost 20 years. A funding plan for the new arena project was completed in March, 2007, thanks to the combined efforts of Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, among others. The Sports & Exhibition Authority owns the building on behalf of the city and county, and the Penguins have the lease. The new arena is managed by SMG, with Jay Roberts serving as general manager.

COMMUNITY UPDATE TOYS, TOYS, AND MORE TOYS: PENGUINS FANS LEND A HELPING HAND THIS HOLIDAY SEASON The Pittsburgh Penguins returned this season with their annual Toys for Tots Holiday Toy Drive. The Penguins joined with the U.S. Marine Corps to collect toys and cash on Monday, Dec. 6 and Wednesday, Dec. 8. Fans were encouraged to bring new, unwrapped toys or make monetary donations at CONSOL Energy Center gates until 10 minutes into the first period. Contributions were accepted by the wives and girlfriends of Penguins’ players and members of the Booster Club. Every fan that donated was eligible to win autographed Penguins memorabilia. Thanks to the generosity of all the fans in attendance, the 2010 Toys for Tots Holiday Toy Drive raised $7,105 and 1,941 toys for underprivileged children this holiday season. The Penguins organization has sponsored a holiday toy drive every season since 1992. All of the money raised will be used by the Toys for Tots program to purchase additional toys for needy children. Those toys, along with the toys collected at this year’s drive, will be distributed throughout the city before the holidays.

STAY TUNED FOR THE STARKIST SHOOTOUT SEMI-FINALS IN JANUARY. You can also view this and previously shown competitions at pittsburghpenguins.com.

On Sunday, October 10, sixteen youth hockey teams from the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) in the Squirt age group (age 9 - 10) participated in a shootout competition at CONSOL Energy Center. The event was videotaped to be shown in episodes at Penguins home games. The first round of competition featured heats between two teams striving to advance to the next round. Sixteen teams fielded five skaters shooting against the opposing team’s goalie. After each team competition, an individual shooter and goaltender squared off against the opposing team’s individual tandem for a one-on-one competition. Each winning team and pair of individuals advanced to the next round of eight teams/tandems. The format repeated as teams and individual pairs advanced through the quarter-final heats to move on to the semi-finals. Robust competition marked the semi-final round for teams and individual tandems. The remaining two teams and individual tandems then had to “leave it all on the ice” in vying for the championship. Early in the second intermission of each Penguins home game the various heats in the competition will be featured. Enjoy each episode.

Now it’s hockey’s time. Earlier this year, HBO and NHL executives brainstormed ways that would enable “24/7” to chronicle and showcase the intensity and excitement that is unique to the NHL. It wasn’t long before the two sides agreed that the perfect fit for the all-access series would be the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic and the featured stars would be the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Washington Capitals. The exclusive HBO Sports presentation 24/7 PENGUINS/CAPITALS: ROAD TO THE NHL WINTER CLASSIC debuts Wednesday, Dec. 15 at 10:00 p.m. with an immediate encore at 11:00 p.m., and follows the two clubs simultaneously, chronicling the highs and lows of the intense December schedule. Noted HBO Sports President Ross Greenburg, “Taking our reality series ‘24/7’ into the world of the National Hockey League is a perfect fit. The ‘24/7’ franchise is fashioned on larger-than-life personalities, engaging storylines and unrestricted access. With Sidney Crosby leading the Penguins and Alex Ovechkin leading the Capitals, we have all the ingredients for a dynamic show that will take viewers deep inside professional hockey and set the stage for the Winter Classic.” Ensuing episodes of 24/7 PENGUINS/ CAPITALS: ROAD TO THE NHL WINTER CLASSIC debut on subsequent Wednesdays – Dec. 22 and 29 and Jan. 5 – at 10:00 p.m., with an immediate encore play at 11:00 p.m. All four episodes will have multiple replay dates on HBO, and the series will also be available on HBO On Demand®.

I feel

.

Ask a grieving child how they’re feeling and you may get a lot of answers. Or none at all. For many, finding the words to express their feelings can be difficult. But while finding the right words may not be easy, finding the right place to turn to for help can be. At the Caring Place, we’re here when grieving children need someone to listen, to talk, or to just sit and be. For more information about one of our peer support groups or to volunteer, call us today.

THE PENGUINS GAME VAULT FEBRUARY 7, 1995 • PENGUINS 7, PANTHERS 3 CIVIC ARENA Throughout the 1990s the Pittsburgh Penguins were notorious for establishing scoring records and setting personal milestones on what felt like a nightly basis. On February 7, 1995, it was future Hall of Famer Joe Mullen’s turn to shine in the spotlight. Mullen became the first American-born player in National Hockey League history to record 1,000 points when he assisted on John Cullen’s second period goal. Mullen later added a pair of goals to go along with his two assists for a fourpoint night that led the Penguins to a 7-3 shellacking of the Florida Panthers at the Civic Arena. Pittsburgh didn’t take long to find the back of the net, striking just 1:18 minutes into the contest. Markus Naslund, who was filling in for the suspended Luc Robitaille on the top line next to Ron Francis and Jaromir Jagr, beat John Vanbiesbrouck to make it 1-0 in favor of the Penguins. Later in the period, Mullen, who entered the contest two points shy of 1,000, moved one step closer to history when he and Cullen combined to set up Sandstrom for his sixth goal of the year, a tally which gave Sandstrom goals in four straight games, to Joe Mullen became the first American-born player in National Hockey League history put the Penguins ahead 2-0. to record 1,000 points on Feb. 7, 1995. Fans barely had time to get back to their seats following the first intermission when Mullen delivered the historic moment everyone came to see just 28 seconds into the second period. Mullen began the play in his own zone, working the puck ahead to defenseman Grant Jennings, who sprung Cullen into the Florida zone. Cullen quickly deposited a shot behind Vanbiesbrouck, allowing Mullen to become the 42nd player in league history to reach the 1,000-point mark. Mullen’s magical night didn’t stop there, as he scored the first of his two second-period goals just minutes later to stake the Penguins to a commanding 4-0 advantage. Enforcer Jim McKenzie and Martin Straka also scored for the Penguins during the middle frame to complete the scoring for Pittsburgh. The trio of Mullen (2G-2A), Cullen (1G-2A) and Sandstrom (1G-2A) combined for 10 points as the Penguins improved to 8-0-1 during a stretch which saw them open the season with a 13-game unbeaten streak (12-0-1).

SUCCESS BREEDS SUCCESS Although the Penguins-Capitals rivalry has become a white-hot, forward Mark Letestu isn’t so sure the ill will has translated down to the two organizations’ respective AHL affiliates: the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and the Hershey Bears. “It might have translated up,” Letestu said. It’s that competitive whenever the AHL Penguins and Bears get together, as they will at the CONSOL Energy Center on Dec. 30. The game is part of a double-header that will also include an opening matchup between Robert Morris and 2010 NCAA Frozen Four participant RIT and help the Penguins celebrate Winter Classic Week in advance of the much-anticipated Pens-Caps clash on Jan. 1 at Heinz Field. Letestu is part of a significant Penguins contingent that worked its way up to the NHL through Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. In at least one respect he still hasn’t left. “We don’t like Hershey and they don’t like us,” Letestu said. Hershey has won the last two Calder Cup championships. And yes, Letestu referred to the WilkesBarre/Scranton Penguins as “we.” “It’s quite the rivalry down there,” he added. The AHL arrangement, meanwhile, has been quite beneficial to the NHL Penguins. Their AHL prospects play the NHL Penguins’ system, which often makes for a smoother transition upon promotion. And the Penguins’ last two head coaches, Michel Therrien and Mark Letestu made his way to the Dan Bylsma, arrived directly from Wilkes-Barre NHL through Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. /Scranton. “As I get a little older and more removed from Wilkes-Barre I see how important the organizational aspect of it is,” Bylsma said. “The situation for the players, the fact they play the system, how we are committed to putting players there and having them grow in our organization, the development we have with our coaches, the development of coaches, the continuity is remarkable and really an asset to the Pittsburgh organization. “It’s done from up here with [Penguins general manager] Ray Shero and the leadership we have here but it’s also done with the leadership we have down there in Wilkes-Barre with the coaches and the staff we have down there.”

IF SUCCESS BREEDS SUCCESS, THE AHL PENGUINS ARE CERTAINLY HOLDING UP THEIR END. J

They’ve qualified for the playoffs in nine of their first 11 seasons, including the last eight in succession, the longest current streak in the AHL. continued on page 99

FOR QUESTIONS CALL: That success has either helped to inspire a passionate and loyal fan base or has Karen Newman 214-891-5875 resulted, at least in part, from the intense support the AHL Penguins regularly receive.

Either way, it creates an experience that resonates with the players. “Wilkes-Barre’s the best,” said defenseman Ben Lovejoy. “I feel like I grew up there. I look back and watch how they’re doing like I do my college team. I loved playing there. “Obviously, it’s great to be in the NHL, but if you’re going to be in the AHL that’s certainly the spot you want to be.” Lovejoy identified the fan support as “probably the best part” of the Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton experience. “You go to the game every night and you see the same passionate people who have been cheering for them now for 11 years,” he said. “They love you there. They’re so into their hockey and they’re really passionate about their hockey The Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup winning team players and their hockey team. included 10 Wilkes-Barre/Scranton alumni. “We’re not celebrities but they know who we are around town and they go above and beyond to make us feel at home.” On Dec. 30, fans of the NHL Penguins fans will have a chance to respond in kind and in all likelihood get a head start on supporting players who will eventually call the CONSOL Energy Center home on a much more permanent basis. “I loved my time there,” Letestu said. “The coaching I had down there was excellent. It definitely prepared me for my experience here. But the building, the community, the fans, it’s a good place to be in the American league, second to none I would think. “We play the exact same system. We practice the same, go about playing games the same way, it really does prepare you. Everything they do down there is so that when you do make the next step and come to this level you can be successful here in Pittsburgh.” Mike Prisuta is the sports director for WDVE-FM and the sports anchor for “Jim, Randy & the DVE Morning Show.”

PENS PROFILE PAUL MARTIN

Paul Martin played wide receiver for Elk River, Minn., High School’s football team. He performed well enough to make the prestigious All-Metro team in 1999. Arizona Cardinals superstar receiver Larry Fitzgerald made the same team the very next season. If Martin had achieved such in Western Pennsylvania, football would have been his future. But in hockey-mad Minnesota, his path was equally clear. Martin was named Minnesota’s Mr. Hockey in 2000, an honor given annually to the state’s best scholastic player. He played hockey at the University of Minnesota, helping the Gophers win NCAA hockey titles in 2002 and 2003. New Jersey’s second-round draft choice in 2000, Martin debuted with the Devils in 2003. He spent six seasons with New Jersey, then signed with the Penguins as a free agent this past summer. Paul Martin has never regretted No regrets, obviously, about choosing choosing hockey over football. hockey. It was an easy decision, “especially for me,” said Martin, who downplays his football ability: “I was all right.” He’s more than “all right” on the ice. Martin was selected to the U.S. team for last winter’s Vancouver Olympics, but didn’t play because of a broken arm that limited him to 22 NHL games last season. He had three goals and 11 assists in his first 32 games as a Penguin, going plus-8. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Martin prospered in New Jersey’s rigid trapping system. But he says adjusting to the Penguins’ more offensive-minded style hasn’t been too difficult. “It hasn’t been bad,” said Martin, 29. “It’s a couple different systematic things. The guys have been good about it, and now we’re well-adjusted. I’ve switched partners a couple times, but in this league you should be able to play with anyone. So it’s good.” Indeed, Martin has settled in alongside fellow first-year Penguin Zbynek Michalek to form a formidable defense tandem. The Martin-Michalek pairing played a big part as the Penguins assembled a 12-game winning streak from Nov. 17–Dec. 11. Martin allowed that he has more freedom in Pittsburgh: “The defensemen here are allowed to be more aggressive getting up the ice and making plays. But the system isn’t continued on page 117

that different [from New Jersey]. I thought it would be, too — more different than it has been. But it’s mostly small things in the defensive zone. For the most part, it’s the same concept. “You have to take care of your own zone first when you’re a defenseman, especially in New Jersey. So you take that with you and try to improve within the new system.” The Penguins lost, 3-2, at Philadelphia on Dec. 14 to end their 12-game winning streak, the second-best in club history and tied for eighth-best in NHL history. The Penguins made it two losses in a row by bowing, 4-1, at home against the New York Rangers on Dec. 15. The Penguins nonetheless had the second-most points in the NHL at the conclusion of play Dec. 15. Martin was hardly panicked by the twin defeats. “Those are important points,” said Martin, referring to the 12 Martin has quarterbacked the Penguins’ consecutive victories. “Every win power play for much of the season. you can get is big. We let some points get away early in the year. Then we figured out how to win. We haven’t played bad these last couple games. We just had a couple letdowns. “You don’t get complacent. But you can get comfortable in what you’re doing. You have to go back and change a couple things.” Martin has quarterbacked the Penguins’ power play for much of the season, doing so throughout the 12-game win streak. The Penguins’ PP went 9-for-38 during that span. “It feels pretty good,” Martin said of the power play. “We’re moving the puck well and getting chances. That’s what you ask for: Create movement and get pucks to the net — get your opportunities that way. The goals, hopefully, come from that.” The Penguins play the Washington Capitals at Heinz Field in the NHL’s annual Winter Classic on Jan. 1. As a Minnesota guy, Martin looks forward to the experience. “It’s going to be fun,” Martin said, beaming. “It brings me back to a kid growing up in Minnesota, on the pond or on the outdoor rink — that’s when it’s the most fun, when it’s pure. You’re just out there skating around. It’s going to bring back a lot of good memories.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

PIRHL ALL-STAR GAME LOOKS TO HELP ITS OWN Although it won’t be full of high-profile names like Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin and Steven Stamkos that will headline the 2011 NHL All-Star Game, the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Roller Hockey League (PIRHL) will hold its own All-Star game on Jan. 2 — one day after the 2011 NHL Bridgestone Winter Classic. Similar to the events surrounding the NHL’s All-Star game, the PIRHL will hold a skills competition to complement the game itself. There are 15 divisions, ranging from Elementary School Tier III to Varsity Tier I, and each will have its own game that will be played during the day at the Blade Runners in Harmarville. Prior to the games, the skills competition will match up elementary, middle, junior varsity and varsity players against one another. Last year’s event hosted 220 players and gave each player the opportunity to test their skills against the best in their division. With a chunk of the season already gone, the PIRHL will announce the players that will be selected to this year’s event in the coming month. Like the NHL, which takes the proceeds of the All-Star Game and applies them towards the players’ pension fund, the PIRHL has generously decided to give back to its players as well. For the second straight year, the proceeds of the game will go towards a scholarship fund set up for PIRHL players. The league will select three high school seniors who have, according to the scholarship board, “achieved exemplary academic performance, shown a commitment to community service and have demonstrated the values of sportsmanship promoted by the PIRHL.” In 2009, one $1000 and two $500 scholarships were awarded to three seniors who best fit the criteria of the award and who would attend either a two-year or four-year accredited institution of higher education in the fall of 2010. “We would really like to give out even more this year,” PIRHL president John Hunter said. “It all depends on how many people attend the event, the more people that come out, the more money we will have to give.” Hunter and the rest of the PIRHL hope that with the increasing popularity of inline hockey in the area, the attendance of the All-Star Game will continue to grow as it has in the past. In a league that is closely followed by those that participate in it and sometimes overlooked by the rest of hockey’s most loyal followers, the PIRHL All-Star Game will give its players the chance to showcase their talents and prove that its elite players are just as skilled and deserving of accolades as their ice hockey counterparts. “It’s a nice event and gives players the chance to show off,” said Hunter. “We just hope to have even more in attendance.” For more information please contact Tom Ward at pirhlcommissioner@yahoo.com

On January 1, 2008, in a game for the ages at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, NY, the Penguins and Sabres took to the great outdoors … and the NHL Winter Classic was born. A National Hockey League attendance record setting crowd of 71,217 witnessed as the Penguins prevailed, 2-1. Sidney Crosby’s shootout-winner amid the snowfall turned the final page on the game’s storybook ending. The success of the 2008 NHL Winter Classic led to it becoming an annual event played on New Year’s Day in a different NHL city. Here’s a summary of the matchups and locations for each game.

2010-11 STATISTICS (WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON; AHL): Games Played: 14; Record: 11-2-1; Goals-against average: 2.27; Save percentage: .915 (As of 12/15/10)

Who was your favorite player growing up? I was always a fan of Felix Potvin because of his style and the kind of equipment he wore. I thought it was cool. He also had a cool nickname, ‘Felix the Cat.’ How would you describe your playing style? I’m a positionally sound goalie that tries to be calm in the net. I don’t try to get out of position in there or make too many crazy saves. I like to keep things calm and in control, and I think that’s when I’m playing my best. What was it like going straight from Northeastern University to practicing with the Penguins during the 2009 Stanley Cup Final? It was a pretty cool experience to go from being in class and taking tests to watching the playoffs and being a part of it. Being able to celebrate the Stanley Cup with the team was something you dream about as a kid. Watching Marc-Andre Fleury play and how he handled all the different situations that came up during the playoffs was a great experience for me. What’s been behind Wilkes/Barre Scranton’s successful start? I think our coaching staff has been great for us. They’ve done a great job of leading us and keeping us focused. I think when you’re winning games, you can kind of lose focus on the tasks at hand. But they’ve made sure that we’re working hard towards our goal of winning the Calder Cup and that we’re at our best every night. How do you plan on building off your individual success from last season? I think last year I proved to myself that I could play in the league and be a guy that could be counted on to win games. That was something I wanted to continue coming into this year. John Curry and I have had a good rotation going on this year. We’ve both played equal amounts of time and are pushing each other to play well and be at our best all the time. I think that’s something that’s helped both of us. What has it been like sharing goaltending duties with John Curry? I think we’re both pushing each other. We’re both trying to help the team win. I think the competition between us is a healthy one and one that’s helping out the team right now. 137

PENGUINS STILL LOOKING TO IMPROVE THEIR GAME From Nov. 12 to Dec. 11, the Penguins put together a 14-0-1 record. That’s enough to instill a healthy dose of fear into upcoming opponents. But the real scary part is that the team still wants to improve. “I think we’re honest with each other,” head coach Dan Bylsma said. “And there are certain areas of the game where I think we can get better at.” While the team’s record couldn’t have gotten much better than 14-0-1 over that span, the Penguins are working hard to limit mistakes and keep the puck in their opponent’s offensive zone. “When the team executes that way, we minimize the other team’s chances to have success and we maximize our chances,” Bylsma said. “We call that a 70-30 game and that’s the way we want to play. “I think we are in that mentality where we still need to get better and there are areas we can improve at. I think you see that in our game and our guys’ approach to practice.” It can be challenging for a team that keeps winning to find areas to improve, but Penguins captain Sidney Crosby isn’t one to be easily satisfied. “We know each game is tough, and it’s tough to win every night,” Crosby said. “So we try to prepare accordingly. You just want to keep that going and keep winning as long as you can.” Brooks Orpik said that the team doesn’t plan on becoming content any time soon, not wanting to fall into any bad habits. “Obviously when you’re on a winning streak, you don’t want to change too much,”

The Penguins currently rank in the top five in many categories, including wins (1st).

Orpik said. “But there’s definitely some detailed stuff that can be a little bit better. I don’t think anyone’s getting too complacent because there’s always room to get better.” The Penguins currently rank in the top five of the NHL in many categories, including wins (1st), penalty killing (2nd), goals-against average (3rd) and goals per game (5th). Crosby stands atop the league standings in goals (26) and points (54). To top it off, Kris Letang is one of the NHL’s leaders in plus-minus rating (plus-18). It’s scary to think about what those numbers could look like if the Penguins keep improving, especially with the impending return of Jordan

Jordan Staal hopes to return to the Penguins lineup soon.

Staal to the lineup. The 2010 Selke Trophy finalist for the league’s best defensive forward award broke his hand in November while recovering from offseason foot surgery. He is progressing in his rehabilitation and should return to the Penguins lineup sometime in the next couple of weeks. Staal, who was Pittsburgh’s first-round pick (No. 2 overall) in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, is one of the Penguins’ best two-way forwards and contributes significantly to the team’s penalty kill. But despite his absence, the Penguins killed off 88.2 percent of their opponent’s power play opportunities over their winning streak. Craig Adams said the team will still play the same way once Staal returns. “We haven’t done anything differently except of course miss [Staal],” Craig Adams said. “As far as our system and what we’re trying to do out there, that hasn’t changed. We’ve been without him, but we won’t change anything when he comes back. We’ll just have another good penalty killer.” The team also went without the talents of Evgeni Malkin for four games, as he took some time off to recover from a lower-body injury. Before his injury, the Penguins forward had been a crucial component of the team’s offense, ranking third on the squad with 22 points. In the meantime, the Penguins have been getting contributions from everyone. Sixteen different players scored goals and 21 players notched assists during the 12-game winning streak from Nov. 17 to Dec. 11. “We’ve got some big plays from everyone,” Crosby said. “[Injuries] are something we have to deal with, and we know that. We’re just trying to do our best and make sure that we give ourselves a chance. Knowing [Staal] will be back at some point, hopefully we’re playing good hockey when he’s ready to come back.” With the Penguins recent winning streak, the fact that the team is still getting healthy and improving should be enough to keep Penguins fans happy these holidays.
