WE’RE HERE FOR THE HOCKEY.
LET’S GO PENS
IS PROUD TO BE A PITTSBURGH-BASED BRAND.
AROUND THE NHL BY: MIKE PRISUTA
SHUTOUT SHARK: San Jose
goaltender Alex Stalock put together a franchiserecord shutout streak in January. Stalock’s run of not allowing a goal in 178:55 from Jan. 5-27 bested the mark of 171:18 established by Evgeni Nabokov in January of 2009.
THE HARD WAY:
The Flyers blanked the Kings 2-0 on Feb. 1 despite being out-shot 35-13. The 13 shots tied the franchise record for fewest in a game (Dec. 11. 1990 in a 4-1 loss at Washington) and set a franchise record for fewest shots in a Philadelphia win. The shutout of LA was the second in three games for Philadelphia goaltender Steve Mason, an effort that lowered his goals-against average to 1.35 and upped his save percentage to .975 over his last three outings, and one that improved his record to 19-7-5 in his last 31 appearances (since Nov. 2).
SHOOTOUT STRUGGLES:
New Jersey’s shootout loss on Jan. 16 at Colorado was the Devils’ NHLrecord 12th consecutive shootout setback dating back to March 15, 2013. Included in that string
of futility was New Jersey tying the NHL record for consecutive shootout attempts without a goal at 20 (Tampa Bay, 2009).
FINDING THE NET:
The Blackhawks’ 33-10-4 record through 47 games was highlighted by Chicago scoring an NHL-best 195 goals and averaging an NHL-best 3.42 goals per game. The Blackhawks also lead the NHL in games with five or more goals scored (20) and were one of four teams that had not been shut out at that juncture (St. Louis, Anaheim, Colorado).
RED-HOT RED WING: Detroit
forward Gustav Nyquist scored a goal in four consecutive games from Jan. 20-26, the longest such run by a Red Wings player this season. Only Anaheim’s Corey Perry (seven games), St. Louis’ Alex Steen (six), St. Louis’ Jaden Schwartz (six), Tampa Bay’s Steven Stamkos (six), San Jose’s Patrick Marleau (five) and the Rangers’ Rick Nash (five) had longer streaks in the NHL this season. Nyquist’s streak was snapped on Jan. 28 at Philadelphia, but he bounced back with four more goals in his next two games, including a hat trick on Feb. 1 at Washington.

COMMUNITY UPDATE PENGUINS HOST SPECIAL GUESTS AT ANNUAL CHILDREN’S CHARITIES PRACTICE & LUNCHEON On Tuesday, January 14, the Pittsburgh Penguins hosted some very special guests during the team’s annual Children’s Charities Practice & Luncheon at CONSOL Energy Center . The organization treated children from several different local charities to front row seats during the Penguins’ morning skate, as well as a meet-and-greet luncheon with the team after practice in the arena’s Lexus Club . Thirty families from Make-A-Wish Greater Pennsylvania and West Virginia, The Children's Home of Pittsburgh & Lemieux Family Center and The Children’s Institute of Pittsburgh attended the event, which has been a team function for the last 27 years . During the Penguins practice and throughout the meal, the children and their families had a blast as they received some additional entertainment from team mascot Iceburgh, as well as Chippo the Clown who made balloon animals for the kids and Hearts who painted faces . It was a fun day for each of the families and a break from the more serious issues that each family faces every day . Diane Mastramico, mother of special guest Rocco, attended the event and enjoyed the opportunity with her family . “Last week, we came to the hockey game with Mario Lemieux and then we got invited to come today for the practice and the continued on page 26

lunch,” Mastramico said . “My son is excited to meet all the players … My son is the hockey fan, we weren’t avid hockey fans, but he really got us interested .” At the luncheon, players trickled in after showering, but injured players Vitale and Paul Martin were some of the first to show up . Martin said that the atmosphere of the event gives players a lot to take away from it all . “I just think the most important thing is when you just connect with a kid,” Martin explained . “You get to spend some time and talk to them, talk about their favorite players . You can tell how much it means to them and that’s what we get out of it . Being able to spend time with them is the most important thing .” Each family departed the luncheon with smiles on their families and hopefully feeling a little lighter after an opportunity to enjoy something together, without the daily stresses and concerns .

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER
Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 15th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including seven straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past six years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Known as Le Magnifique, Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario and his wife, Nathalie, and their four children live in Sewickley. For full bios, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

RON BURKLE CO-OWNER
Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 15th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for six-plus seasons. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/ Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award. DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT
David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Penguins, overseeing every aspect of the team’s operations. Since Morehouse was named President in April, 2007, the Penguins have reshaped their image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010. He reports directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. An emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.based NHL, NBA and MLB teams in local television ratings during the 2012-13 season. The Penguins’ rating of 12.66 was the highest achieved by any U.S.-based NHL, NBA or MLB team on a regional sports network since 2002. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins led all U.S.-based NHL teams in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales. Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of the organization’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids ages 5-7 each year. The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He and his wife, Vanessa, have four children and live in Sewickley Heights.

RAY SHERO
EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT & GENERAL MANAGER
Ray Shero has established himself as one of the premiere NHL general managers during his tenure with the Penguins. Shero, an active member with USA Hockey and a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group, will serve as associate general manager for Team USA at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Shero, who is in his eighth season as Pittsburgh’s GM, has transformed a franchise that missed the playoffs from 2002-06 into a perennial championship contender, including two Stanley Cup Final appearances and a Cup title in 2009. Shero, who was named general manager of the Penguins in May, 2006, arrived with a firm, forward-thinking managerial style that incorporates cutting-edge methods of technology, player relations, prospect development and salary cap management. His father, Hall of Famer Fred Shero, played for the NY Rangers (1947-50) and coached the Philadelphia Flyers for seven seasons. Fred and Ray Shero are one of the few father-son tandems to have their names on the Cup. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. He twice led the team in scoring and was named team captain on two occasions. He graduated in 1984 as one of the top-10 scorers in school history. Shero, who was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1982 NHL Draft, spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. In 2008-09, Bylsma penned one of the most remarkable starts to a head coaching career in NHL history. He began the season in his first head coaching job, with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League, and finished the year by raising the Stanley Cup. Bylsma was promoted to Pittsburgh on Feb. 15, 2009, inspiring an 18-3-4 run in the final 25 games to climb from 10th to fourth place and home-ice advantage in the opening round. Bylsma joined the Penguins organization as assistant coach with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in 2006. Two seasons later he was promoted to WBS head coach in 2008-09. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-04. He was a member of Anaheim’s 2003 Western Conference championship team. Whether it’s providing exclusive behind-the-scenes access to a pre-season trip to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point or audio from the team bench during an Evgeni Malkin hat trick, In The Room gives fans a unique perspective on the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Emmy-nominated, all-access television show, which debuted during the 2011-12 season, can be seen on ROOT SPORTS in Pittsburgh and the NHL Network, in addition to pittsburghpenguins.com. New episodes air on or around the 15th of each month. “The idea of doing our own show developed because of the success of HBO’s 24/7, Road to the Winter Classic,’” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse. “We got a lot of positive feedback from our fans about the unbelievable access to players and coaches. Now, with In The Room, we can continue to show fans a side of the team and the sport that they’ve never seen before.” continued on page 62

The first-ever episode of In The Room in 2011 chronicled Sidney Crosby’s return to the lineup after missing more than 60 games due to injury. The show’s staff followed Evgeni Malkin to Russia to witness his off-season workouts in his home country, and documented a unique oneon-one workout session between coach Bylsma and Kris Letang. Season Two showcased the dedication and human side of a hockey player. Joe Vitale said goodbye to his wife and kids before a road trip, and two former NHL captains, Jarome Iginla and Brenden Morrow, said goodbye to their old teams as Ray Shero acquired them prior to the trade deadline. Chatter on the bench between James Neal and Malkin during a game highlighted their unique relationship, and the highs and lows of a long postseason run were revealed. The current season began with a trip to West Point. Lessons in leadership, teamwork and sacrifice were stressed — ideals that the 2013-14 Penguins would build upon. each win to the player who has best exemplified those traits. Tanner Glass was mic’d up during a fight, as was Pascal Dupuis — when he pulled out his own tooth! “We’re able to do this because of the tremendous cooperation of the Penguins players, coaches and hockey operations staff,” said Leo McCafferty, executive producer of In The Room. “Obviously, at times, you have to get lucky. We had a microphone on Geno when he scored a hat trick. We had a mic on Pascal when he pulled out his tooth. But it’s given us an opportunity to take fans where they’ve never been before. The best part is, we never know what we’re going to come across next.”

Designed to sell remaining game-day inventory, the American Eagle Student Rush program provides the Pittsburgh Penguins an opportunity to introduce new fans to the game of hockey at a discounted rate. #ASKGIBBONS TWITTER Q&A
BRIAN GIBBONS @KATEGERSTER If you could play with anyone in the NHL past or present, who would it be? #AskGibbons “I don’t know, maybe Tony Amonte. He was my favorite player growing up and was a family friend and used to play street hockey with us when we were little, me and my brothers. He’s someone I’ve always looked up to and I think he would be someone that I want to play with from the past.” @EQUESTRIAN66 What is your gameday routine like? #AskGibbons “It’s pretty simple. Get up, eat breakfast, pregame skate, grab lunch — usually chicken and pasta — and nap for as long as I can before I have to get to the rink for the game.” @_TAYLORP What was it like scoring your first NHL goal in your first game? #AskGibbons “It was awesome. It was special obviously. I didn’t see it go in right away so I didn’t want to celebrate — you know if it didn’t go in, I’d look like an idiot — but it was an important goal. After we won the game I was able to enjoy it a little bit more and I was happy that it was a goal that helped the team win.” @JILLIAN_PAIGE58 What was your favorite thing about playing in Wilkes-Barre? #AskGibbons “I think the guys on the team. Ever since I’ve been there, there’s been a few guys who have been there every year like Zach Sill and Paul Thompson and Phil Samuelsson, guys who I’ve become very close with and hang out with in the summer and always keep in contact with. They’re friendships that will last a lifetime so I think the guys that have been in the room have been the best part.” @BABYBLUEEYES50558 What’s it like to be on a team with so many former Boston College players such as yourself? #AskGibbons “It’s cool. When you leave college, you never know if you’re going to see these guys again, never mind play with them. And you know, a lot of people don’t get that chance. They ask questions about coaches and teachers and stuff and see if it’s still the same way. It’s a good way to bond when you’re coming up and you don’t really know anyone. It’s a common connection that helps.” 97

ELITE 2014 PEE-WEE QUEBEC TOURNAMENT
This February, during the NHL Olympic break, the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite Hockey Program will be sending a team to the 55th Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament 2014, from February 12th to 23rd at the Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec. The Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament is known as the most important minor hockey tournament in the world, grouping young hockey players (11 and 12 years old). About 2,200 young hockey players from 15 countries come to Quebec to participate in the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament. This Tournament takes place during a period of 12 days with crowds totaling around 200,000 fans, every year. This extraordinary event, very popular, was founded in 1960 and has never ceased to grow in importance. The members of this team will not only be a part of a great tournament but will follow in the footsteps of some of the greatest hockey players of all time. Many stars from the National Hockey League have passed through this Tournament: Brad Park, Guy Lafleur, Marcel Dionne, Gilbert Perrault, Mark Howe, Wayne Gretzky, Sylvain C么t茅, Eric Lindros, among many others including Penguins owner Mario Lemieux. continued on page 102

continued from page 101
“When we first broached the subject of going to Québec with the team and parents at the beginning of the season, they were obviously very excited. As the season has progressed and we have gotten closer to the Québec International Tournament, the team has become much more excited about the chance to play in such an exciting event.” Team Business manager Tim Krock said, “The tournament has a very rich tradition, and I think that the boys really do understand that. We are very grateful to have this opportunity, and it is in large part a reality due to the generosity of the Pittsburgh Penguins, DICK’S Sporting Goods, and GNC.” This year, the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite is sending up their Pee-Wee Major team (2001 birth years) to compete in this year’s tournament. The team will be coached by Mike Schall and former Penguin and three-time Stanley Cup Winner, Mark Recchi. Thanks to GNC, this team will travel to this tournament that will feature the best Pee-Wee hockey teams from around the world and promises to be a competitive and fun atmosphere for this Pens Elite team. Pittsburgh will be well represented not only with talent, but with awesome uniforms. Going back into the archives, this team will be wearing the old school black/yellow sweaters that the Pittsburgh Penguins wore back in the early 90’s. The Pittsburgh Penguins, Pittsburgh Penguins Elite and GNC would like to wish this team the best of luck as they venture north of the border and look to find success in such a prestigious tournament.

USSI JOKINE
PENGUINS PROFILE:
JUSSI JOKINEN BY: MARK MADDEN
Can a pass be too good? That notion certainly got tested Jan. 22 when the Penguins beat Montreal 5-1 at CONSOL Energy Center. The first period was nearing its midway point when Evgeni Malkin blew by a defenseman at the Montreal blue line, sucked two more Canadiens his way, caught goaltender Carey Price leaning, then slipped an exquisite backhand pass across the slot to Jussi Jokinen. Wide-open net. No drama… except in Jokinen’s mind. “You have a little bit too much time,” Jokinen said, smiling. “You think, ‘What if I miss this puck?’ You don’t want to mess it up.” Jokinen didn’t. He buried Malkin’s feed for his 14th goal of the season, then netted his 15th in the second period off another great dish, this time by Olli Maatta. The victory was a solid bounce-back performance by the Penguins, who had been trounced 5-1 by lowly Florida just two days before on CONSOL Energy Center ice. It also continued a hot streak for Jokinen, giving him eight goals in eight games. After 53 games, Jokinen had 15 goals and 21 assists. Jokinen is particularly productive at home: Since joining the Penguins at last season’s trade deadline, he scored 14 goals in his first 30 games at CONSOL Energy Center. Jokinen, 30, has really re-established his career since coming to Pittsburgh. continued on page 111
109
continued from page 109
“You’re pretty excited when you get traded to a team like this, with all the firepower they had last year,” Jokinen said after the Penguins had vanquished Montreal. “But you don’t know what your role is going to be. I was in [Sidney Crosby’s] spot on the first line, and had a pretty good regular season. In the playoffs, I played fourth line and was out of the lineup a little bit, too. “Coming into this season, I knew there was a spot open with Malkin and [James] Neal. That was my goal, to get that spot. I got it in training camp.” Consistency has brought chemistry, or perhaps it’s the other way around. Maybe mere opportunity has been the key factor for Jokinen, who flourished playing in the top six last April while Crosby was hurt, but languished in the post-season. Skating with elite players like Malkin and Neal sure doesn’t hurt. “We have found great chemistry,” Jokinen said. “They’re great players. It’s fun to play with those guys.” The home loss to Florida was a low point in a season which has mostly seen the Penguins run roughshod. The win over a good Montreal team provided redemption. “We were really solid in every area,” Jokinen said. “The PP was strong. The power play was much better. Five-on-five we were really solid. The coaches should be happy with how we played. That’s the

response we were looking for.” Jokinen and Maatta will both represent Finland in the Sochi Olympics. Jokinen’s second goal vs. Montreal came when Maatta faked an opponent to the ice, skated forward, then whipped a cross-ice pass to Jokinen for a one-timer. “Olli has been playing great for us all season,” Jokinen said. “I know he can make those passes. He had his head up, and made a great pass. “If you ask any goalie, if you can one-time the puck, it’s always harder to stop. Guys are making good plays and good passes to me, so every time you can one-time the puck, that’s your goal.” Jokinen’s first goal vs. Montreal gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead. The Pens scored first in 30 of their first 53 games, posting an incredible 27-2-1 record in those contests. “It’s so much easier to play with the lead,” Jokinen said. “The other team has to take some chances, so you get two-on-ones, three-on-twos, stuff like that.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

GYMNASTICS LEGENDS DESCRIBE THRILL OF UPCOMING NATIONALS
When the 2014 P&G Gymnastics SPONSORED LOCALLY BY Championships come to Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center in August, there will be two special fans cheering on competitors in the four-day event. Bela Karolyi, one of the world’s most successful gymnastics coaches, and Carly Patterson, 2004 All-Around Olympic Gold medalist, visited Pittsburgh to check out the venue and to talk about the significance of this event which is being held for the first time in Pittsburgh. The 2014 P&G Gymnastics Championships, USA Gymnastics’ national championships, showcase the country’s best male and female gymnasts. It also will determine the U.S. champions and the U.S. national team for the junior and senior elite levels. BELA KAROLYI The nationals also traditionally serve as part of the selection process for the U.S. Team for the World Championships. Simone Biles and Sam Mikulak are the reigning women’s and men’s U.S. all-around champions, respectively. The 2014 schedule will be: • Thursday, Aug. 21 – women’s gymnastics, juniors and seniors • Friday, Aug. 22 – men’s gymnastics, juniors and seniors • Saturday, Aug. 23 – women’s gymnastics, juniors and seniors • Sunday, Aug. 24 – men’s gymnastics, juniors and seniors. continued on page 133

“Wow! What a beautiful arena,” Karolyi says of CONSOL Energy Center on his first visit to the venue. “What an excellent place to perform.” Patterson agrees, “CONSOL Energy Center looks like a great place. I’m excited to be here.” Karolyi says, “I’ll be here rooting and encouraging all of the participants to do their best.” The long-time coach and influential figure in gymnastics, Karolyi now has snowy white hair, and his passion for gymnastics and his signature mustache are as vibrant as ever. Making a round of Pittsburgh media to promote the upcoming P&G Gymnastics Championships, Karolyi talked about the significance of the championships, his career and the future, as well as the rich history of gymnastics. “We could have a world changer here in Pittsburgh with the world medalists who will be here,” Karolyi says. The standards of gymnastics are higher than ever before, according to Karolyi who says that people will not be able to imagine the spectacular athletic CARLY PATTERSON performances that they will see at the 2014 championships. “It will be a great moment in Pittsburgh gymnastics,” he says, adding, “Who knows who will make history? There could be another Nadia [Comaneci] or Gabby [Douglas].” “It will be inspiring,” he says. “The P&G Gymnastics Championships are a unique opportunity to see the best in the world,” Karolyi says. Patterson, who has experienced some great moments in gymnastics history herself, shares this view. “It’s an exciting time for the sport,” she says, pointing out that the 2014 championship will draw the likes of 2012 Olympic Team Gold Medalists Kyla Ross and McKayla Maroney, and Biles. “It is the biggest competition of the year,” says Carly pointing out that the best gymnasts in the nation, juniors and seniors will come to Pittsburgh to compete for the country’s highest honors in the sport. For local gymnasts and fans of the sport, Patterson says, “You’re lucky when it comes to your city. We will have the best in the United States, boys and girls, competing. It’s the chance to enjoy your sport firsthand and to see world class athletes in your backyard.” continued on page 134

She recalls watching championship performances when she was a young gymnast herself and says that it was inspiring and motivational to her to see high caliber gymnasts vying for top honors. Besides designating gymnastics new national champions and recognizing the individuals’ years of work to hone their performances, Karolyi says, it is “the moment” that is the dream of many young athletes. “Kids are working 8-10 years to get to the national championships.” Karolyi says that for young gymnasts who dream of being champions, the JAKE DALTON impact of witnessing a live competition for national honors can impress and motivate them. “It is the life-time chance to see athletes perform at this level,” he says. “Thousands of kids will come and go home dreaming,” Karolyi says. “Let’s embrace this competition and give kids the opportunity to get inspired. People will be glad that they did,” he says. What attracts Karolyi to the sport of gymnastics? “It’s unique and beautiful,” he says. Floor exercise is his favorite part of gymnastic competition. He calls it a showcase of athletic ability and strength combined with music, dance and expression. “It’s a beautiful combination” he says. When she was competing, Patterson says, “Yes, beam was always my favorite event and to have a dismount named after me that is still one of the hardest dismounts you can do makes me really proud of that. My favorite part of competition now is just watching all the young talent getting better and better and doing so well. It is so nice to sit back and relax and enjoy my sport in a different light, especially knowing that I achieved my ultimate goal in gymnastics.” Discussing what it takes to make a champion, Karolyi says, “The element of performance is needed in addition to the mental element, the drive, soul and feelings.” Mental strength, high difficulty performance and attitude are all necessary to success, he says. Patterson says that excellence in gymnastics teaches and exacts “dedication, commitment and lots of hard work.” Its lessons have relevance for her now as she pursues a college degree from Texas Women’s University and a career in public speaking. On her rise to the top of the world of women’s gymnastics, Patterson laughs and says, “Looking at early videos, no one would have expected it.” continued on page 137

Known as one of the world’s most successful gymnastics coaches and a leader in the sport, Karolyi had a somewhat ironic career as a gymnast. He has produced 28 Olympians, nine Olympic champions, 15 world champions, 12 European champions and six U.S. national champions and says that he struggled in the sport as an athlete in college. “I thought who in the world created this crazy sport.” It was a required study in his physical education training. He says that he was almost “kicked out” of the university over the gymnastics test. His wife Marta, herself a world renowned gymnastics coach, played a crucial role in his gymnastics career. “I met a young lady. She was a great gymnast. We shared a dream together,” he says. Of her gymnastics career, Patterson says, “It was just one of those things that was meant to be.” She confirms that when she attended her cousin’s gymnastics-themed birthday party, “I fell in love with it. My cousin was not a gymnast. She just had her party there.” Laughing, Patterson adds, “She says that I owe her.” Entering the sport at age six, Patterson became the top gymnast in the world in a decade. As a Level 10 gymnast in 2000, she watched Elite gymnasts at a competition and says, “I knew then that I wanted to be like those girls. I knew that I had four SHAWN JOHNSON years to work my butt off to be ready.” “In 2000 a lot happened. I went Elite from Level 10,” Patterson says. She also remembers dealing with her family’s move to another city and having to change gym’s which she says turned out to be a blessing. “I had to keep an eye on the end goal, stay healthy and keep working,” she says. In the 2003 World Championships, she won 2nd in the All-Around competition, and a year later, she became the U.S. National Co-Champion, and went on to be the first American woman to take the Olympic Gold for the All-Around in 20 years. continued on page 138

Patterson says that gymnasts have a “special connection” whether they are Olympians or beginners in their first year. To all of the gymnasts who share the dream of being the best, Patterson says, “Gymnastics is such a great sport. Even if you don’t go to the Olympics or get a scholarship, it’s a great foundation, develops motor skills and teaches a lot about your body.” She adds, “Be proud just to be a gymnast. You are doing something that not everyone can do.” Asked about the future of the sport of gymnastics, Karolyi says, “There have been crucial moments in the history of gymnastics when I’ve thought ‘This is the most intense and highest performance of human capacity’.” He cites as examples performances by Nadia Comaneci and Mary Lou Retton. Comaneci is the only gymnast to ever score perfect 10 in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal. In 1984 at the Olympics in Los Angeles, the energetic and physical performance of Mary Lou Retton earned her the all-around gymnastics championship. “The sport is ever developing in difficulty, the components, dance and music. I don’t believe there is a limit now,” Karolyi says. JOHN OROZCO On this topic, Patterson says, “I have already seen the sport of gymnastics rise so much after the 2004 Olympics and it has been great to watch. I only see good things for the future and for our country to keep dominating like we have been!” Citing Retton’s “lovely personality” and “fiery performance,” Karolyi says, “Mary Lou turned the page on gymnastics toward making it the nation’s number one sport.” He points out that women’s gymnastics is the most watched sport in the country. Karolyi calls Retton, “Mary Lou, my sunshine of my coaching career.” He says that unlike some youngsters who were quiet and perhaps intimidated by his coaching style, Retton was bubbly and enthusiastic and enjoyed every second of training and competing. Looking ahead to the next Olympic Games in 2016, Karolyi says, “We are going to try to make it. We will probably retire after 2016,” he says noting that he and his wife have been involved in the sport for some 50 years. “We deserve to retire,” he says, and then after a moment’s pause he adds, “We will never stop contributing as much as we can.”

The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, scheduled to open in Cranberry in the summer of 2015, will feature two sheets of ice and serve as the Penguins’ official practice rink — but, as Penguins CEO David Morehouse said, “it will be much more than a hockey rink.” The complex will be the first medical facility in the country to focus specifically on hockey-relating training, rehab and injury prevention. “It will be a one-of-a-kind, world-class facility right here in Cranberry,” Morehouse said. UPMC will build the 180,000 square foot facility at an estimated cost of $70 million. The complex will offer expert care in orthopaedics, concussion management, physical and occupational therapy, imaging and sports-performance training. “The facility that we are planning here will comprise almost 50,000 square feet of clinical space for world-class orthopaedic and therapy programs,” said Liz Condordia, UPMC executive vice president. continued on page 143

The Elite programs, both boys and girls, are finding tremendous success on the ice as the U18 boys and U14 girls were Tier 1 Elite League Champions this past year. The U14 girls were also bronze medalists at the USA Hockey National Championships. In the National Championships all three eligible boys teams (Midget Major, U14, U16) reached quarterfinals. “Our goal is to make Pittsburgh Penguins Elite the best AAA hockey program in the country,” said David Morehouse, CEO and President of the Pittsburgh Penguins. “But it isn’t just about winning games and championships. is one of the largest girls’ tournaments in the US. “DICK’S Sporting Goods is thrilled to be the title sponsor of the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program. At DICK’S we believe sports matter and are committed to helping young athletes achieve their goals of playing at the highest level,” said Lauren Hobart, DICK’S Sporting Goods Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. “Our involvement with the Penguins Elite program is a great opportunity for us to support the growth of youth hockey in our hometown of Pittsburgh.” A tribute to the program’s success has been the players who have moved on to compete in college hockey across the country. This past year, the program has graduated eight girls to NCAA Division-III schools and two girls to Division-I (Syracuse, Boston College) totaling 13 girls currently playing Division-I college hockey. On the boys side, several Division-I commitments have occurred over the past 12 months, including Dartmouth, Ohio State and Miami (Ohio). The Elite boys programs have 47 former players currently competing in either college or junior programs. The boys teams practice and play home games at RMU Island Sports Center. The girls teams practice and play home games at both RMU Island Sports Center and Shadyside Academy. Both boys and girls also hold practices and games at the CONSOL Energy Center.

HEADS UP PITTSBURGH During the Summer of 2013, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine expanded their KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE concussion awareness program to include a free neck-strengthening kit during the new testing period. To date, over 8,000 youth athletes have been tested through the Heads Up Pittsburgh Program. Free Neurocognitive Baseline Testing was available for athletes age 10-14 at four Community College of Allegheny County campus locations — Boyce, North, South and the West Hills Center. Testing also took place at the UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side. In an unprecedented move to provide precautions and exercises that could reduce concussions, the first 2,000 participants during that time also received a free neck-strengthening kit. Experts believe this device will help to cut down the number of youthathlete concussions. Those participants that signed up at UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side and the CCAC North campus were also eligible to have their neck strength tested and be part of an ongoing UPMC research project. “We want to make the game safer for all young athletes. As a possible answer, we added the neck strengthening kit. Recently published research indicates that there is a direct correlation with improved neck strength and the reduction of concussions,” said Dave Soltesz, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. If you are interested in donating to the Heads Up Pittsburgh program or for more information, please visit the Penguins Foundation website at pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org or contact us at info@pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.com . 152 136

HOCKEY IS FOR EVERYONE For years Western Pennsylvania youth sports have been dominated by the likes of football, basketball and baseball. Recently however, the region has begun to see a change in preference and participation in sports. Hockey is rapidly becoming the most popular and fastest growing sport in the area. Success seen with the Pittsburgh Penguins on the NHL ice has surely created a demand and a certain excitement around the game, however the popularity of hockey goes well beyond the wins and world class talent the Penguins possess. A genuine love for the game is starting to sweep the area. Kids are beginning to play hockey at younger and younger ages thanks to the Little Penguins: Learn to Play Hockey program. This program will allow 1,000 kids, ages 4-8, to receive free headto-toe gear all thanks to the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and DICK’S Sporting Goods. Since it began in 2008-09 over 4,200 have been introduced to hockey through this program. The Penguins have also teamed up with the DICK’S Sporting Goods, Trib Total Media and the YMCA to create the YMCA Jr. Penguins program which introduces children to the sport through ball hockey. To this point well over 3,100 children have learned and participated in organized ball hockey at local YMCAs. Recently the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered together for Project PowerPlay, which will build 12 continued on page 156 140

dek hockey rinks throughout Allegheny County over a three-year period and allow local residents to play dek hockey for free. Dek hockey is becoming a great way to learn and play hockey without having ice, and was also vital in the development of current Penguins forward Beau Bennett who grew up in sunny California. On top of partnering with the Pennsylvania Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL), the Penguins and the Penguins Foundation have looked to support various hockey programs around the Pittsburgh area. The Steel City Icebergs is an adaptive ice hockey program for both children and adults with developmental disabilities such as autism, down syndrome and traumatic brain injuries. The Pittsburgh Mighty Penguins is a local sled hockey team, which is an internationally recognized event in the Paralympic games. The Mighty Penguins registered three teams on its roster that include youth, junior and adult players. Pittsburgh Ice (Inclusion Creates Equality) provides children, who may not otherwise have the opportunity, to play ice hockey at no cost and experience such a great game. Defending the Blue Line is a nonprofit organization created by soldiers with the spirit of keeping hockey alive for the children of our nation’s military heroes. It ensures that children of military members are afforded every opportunity to participate in the game of hockey by providing free equipment, hockey camps and financial assistance. 140 156

The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, Highmark, the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County began Project Power Play in the summer of 2012 to build two new dek hockey rinks at Banksville Park and Lewis Park in Phase 1 of a three-year plan. By 2014, 12 facilities in the Pittsburgh area will house new dek hockey rinks and the goal of this project is to introduce children to the game at the grass roots level and give them a free venue to play, while keeping them active and having fun. The facilities, 155’ x 75’, are multi-sport courts and each includes a premier dasherboard system like those used in the NHL, players’ benches with shelter, penalty box, scorer’s table, scoreboard, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment. If you are interested in donating to the Project Power Play program or for more information, please visit the Penguins Foundation website at pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org or contact us at info@pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.com . 159 143

MIKE LANGE
PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER
One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 39th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

HERE’S HOW REALIGNMENT AFFECTS PITTSBURGH’S SCHEDULE…
In total, the Penguins will play regular-season games this season — 30 against their seven fellow Metropolitan Division foes; 24 games against the eight teams from the Atlantic Division; and 28 games against the 14 teams from the Western Conference.
Pittsburgh will play five games against the Philadelphia Flyers (3 home; 2 away) and Columbus Blue Jackets (2 home; 3 away), and four games (2 home; 2 away) against the other five Metropolitan Division teams.
The Penguins will play three games each against the eight teams in the Atlantic division — either two at home and one away or once at home and twice away. Teams that the Penguins will play twice at home and once away are Buffalo, Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. Pittsburgh will play Boston, Detroit, Florida and Tampa Bay just once at home.
And finally, for the first time since the 1997-98 season, the Penguins will play each of the 14 Western Conference teams once at home and once on the road. 178 continued on page 162

METROPOLITAN DIVISION
The pre-realignment Atlantic Division was known for being one of toughest and most competitive divisions in the NHL, as it was not uncommon to see all five teams battling until the end to make the playoffs every year (and usually at least three advancing). Plus, the gap between the first-place team and the last-place team tended to be relatively small, especially compared to the gaps in other divisions. It also had some of the most intense rivalries, starting with the legendary, hate-filled and bitter one between cross-state teams Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. And there was no love lost between the Penguins and any of the other teams in the division, either. It doesn’t look like the new Metropolitan Division will be any friendlier. All of the rivalries from the former Atlantic Division, of course, will stay intact. The Capitals are already a current rival of Pittsburgh with all of the star power and history, and now that they’ll see more of each other we can only speculate as to how much more intense that will become. And there’s also more juicy potential for dislike to build between the Penguins and both the Hurricanes and Blue Jackets. continued on page 164 181

NEW ADDITIONS: COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS
The main reason Pittsburgh and Columbus could develop an exciting rivalry is the short distance between them. All seven of the Penguins’ Metropolitan Division opponents are within driving distance, but Columbus is by far the closest at just under three hours away. A lot of Penguins fans made the trip to Columbus the last time Pittsburgh played there on Dec. 4, 2010, with an influx of black and gold jerseys in the stands at the game. And with five games between the teams (three in Columbus, two in Pittsburgh) this season — including a home-and-home series on Nov. 1-2 — fans from both teams will venture into enemy territory to support their clubs. Call them destination rivals, if you will, with the added element of fan travel. WASHINGTON CAPITALS
The Penguins and the Capitals already have one of the NHL’s marquee rivalries. They clashed in the 2011 Winter Classic at Heinz Field, on a few Super Bowl Sundays and had an epic playoff battle in 2009 when Pittsburgh defeated Washington in seven games during the conference semifinals on its way to winning the Stanley Cup. Now that the two 164 180
teams (just a four-hour drive apart) are in the same division and will play each other four times this season — including a home-and-home series on March 10-11 — it could become even more intense. Pittsburgh and Washington developed such a strong rivalry because of star power. The Penguins have Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin while the Capitals have Alex Ovechkin. They are the three biggest superstars in the league and have been battling for individual honors (in addition to team glory in their playoff series) since Ovechkin broke into the NHL during the 2005-06 season. It’s always exciting to watch when they all go head-to-head. The Penguins-Capitals rivalry flared up in the 90s when the two teams met seven times in 11 years — with the Penguins winning in six of those series. That hatred has been carried over during the Ovechkin-Crosby/Malkin era. And it should only get hotter as the teams enter the same division.

CAROLINA HURRICANES
Pittsburgh’s rivalry with Carolina may not be as developed as it is with Washington, but it could get there. If it does, we’d bet it’s because of the Jordan Staal — Brandon Sutter trade. Staal, who played his first six NHL seasons with Pittsburgh, was a key member of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team and was part of the successful three-center model with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. But Staal wanted to play with his brother Eric, so the Penguins traded Jordan to Carolina at the 2012 NHL Draft for Sutter and prospects Brian Dumoulin and Derrick Pouliot. Staal signed a 10-year, $60-million deal with the Hurricanes a few days later. Staal came to Pittsburgh just once in his first season with Carolina, in the final game of the regular season. The sellout crowd at CONSOL Energy Center gave him an extended standing ovation as a tribute played on the video board, and Staal was emotional as he stood up and acknowledged the fans he had played in front of for his first six seasons. But now that that’s over and done with, don’t expect things to remain as friendly and cordial as they are now. Staal is an important part of Penguins history, but not their present or future. He’s a competitive guy, and the Hurricanes expect a lot from him. He’ll want to do everything he can to lead his team to success in the future, including beating his former team whenever possible. continued on page 168 184

PLAYOFFS
Realignment doesn’t just affect the regular season; it affects the postseason as well. The playoffs are now division-based and with an added wild-card system. The number of total playoff spots, 16, remains the same — eight for each conference. That means the Western Conference will have 14 teams competing for eight playoff spots, while the Eastern Conference will have 16 teams competing for eight playoff spots. It will likely end up being a tighter race for Pittsburgh and the rest of the Eastern Conference. The top three teams in the Metropolitan Division and the top three teams from the Atlantic Division will fill the first six spots. The remaining two spots (Nos. 7 and 8) will be filled by the wild-card teams, who are the next two highest-placed finishers in each conference based on regular-season points and regardless of division. That means the Metropolitan Division could send five teams to the playoffs while the Atlantic sends three; or vice versa. Or they could each send four. Regardless, the playoffs are now heavily based on divisional standings while before, only the division winner got a guaranteed spot in the playoffs. EASTERN CONFERENCE TOP

NHL.com explained the seeding best… “The seeding of the wild-card teams within each divisional playoff will be determined on the basis of regular-season points. The division winner with the most points in the conference will be matched against the wild-card team with the fewest points; the division winner with the second-most points in the conference will play the wild-card team with the second fewest points. The teams finishing second and third in each division will play in the first round of the playoffs. The winners of each series will play for berths in the conference championship series.” So while the wildcard system makes it possible to play a team in the opening round of the playoffs outside of the division, it’s more likely that teams will be playing the first two rounds against divisional foes. And we’ve seen first-hand the last few years just how intense that can be.

No matter what level you are playing, skating is everything when it comes to hockey. However, skating isn’t just about being able to move backwards or forwards. Change of direction is critical when your team is on the transition from defense to offense, or vice versa. That makes being able stop, turn or pivot on a dime and quickly accelerate out of a start position as much a key to being a good skater as straightahead speed. Work hard to improve your skating when you can!
THE IMPORTANCE OF PASSING
Pay attention to your passing. Nothing moves the puck up ice quicker than a tape-totape pass. A good passing team is able to maintain possession of the puck for long stretches, putting itself in position continued on page 184 200

to generate more offense. What separates the great passers from the good ones is not only are they able to deliver the puck to a teammate when he or she is wide open, but they are able to use the boards and make area passes to teammates in traffic. “Practice perfect passing.”
GET TO THE NET
Everybody has probably heard the saying ‘good things happen when you go to the net.’ There is a good reason for that — everything happens there. When you have a chance to shoot, get the puck on net. You also have to make sure that you physically go to the net so that way you are there for tips, rebounds and screens — all plays that lead directly to goals.
WORK HARD AND HAVE FUN
We all want to be the best players we can be and help our team win each time we step on the ice. The easiest way to achieve this — WORK HARD EVERY TIME you step on the ice because work ethic is a huge key to being a successful hockey player. Just as important as working hard is ENJOYING THE GAME. Hockey is just that — a game — which means it is something we do to entertain ourselves. When you are having fun on the ice, chances are good that you are playing your best.

ICEBURGH A delight for children of all ages, Iceburgh — the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins not only provides fans with exciting game entertainment but this large, energetic bird can also be seen at a multitude of community events and elementary schools throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. Iceburgh arrived on the scene in 1992 and is a staple at all team events. During Penguins’ home games, fans most definitely notice the antics of Iceburgh leading sections of fans in cheers, greeting young children on the concourse or displaying his athleticism on-ice between periods. In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture “Sudden Death.” He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh wasted no time getting acquainted with his new home at CONSOL Energy Center in September of 2010. You can find Iceburgh sliding down stair banisters, dancing in the stands and tossing t-shirts to fans. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and recently performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. In addition to his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game, Iceburgh makes annual appearances at the Mascot Olympics held in Orlando, FL. If you would like to request an Iceburgh appearance at your next event, please complete the online form by visiting the community section of pittsburghpenguins.com. 208 192

TEAM USA HAS AN AGENDA BY: MIKE PRISUTA
Dan Bylsma and Team USA are headed to Sochi with an agenda. “Win a gold medal,” Bylsma confirmed. Beyond that, Team USA will have a distinctive approach, one that will dictate how the group intends to function at the Winter Olympics and one that was paramount in the initial selection of the team in the first place. “Our best attribute is that our players play their best against the other teams’ best,” Bylsma said. “We’re not going to have the most skilled team. We’re not going to out-skill them. They’re not going to say ‘that was masterful.’ “Our guys match up best against the other teams’ top players; they’re hard to play against. That’s what out team is going to be right from the first-line center to the fourth-line center to our defense. They’re going to be a tough team to play against. “We’ve talked about skating with our team. We’ve talked about the intelligence we want in our team. But we’re going to be a tough team to play against throughout our lineup.” It’s not an all-star team in the traditional sense. Those excluded from the group include three forwards that entered the first week of February ranked in the top 10 among U.S. players in NHL goals this season (the Islanders’ Kyle Okposo, fourth, 24; Minnesota’s Jason Pominville, tied for sixth, 22; Ottawa’s Bobby Ryan, ninth, 20). continued on page 212

Winnipeg’s Dustin Byfuglien entered the first week of February as the leading scorer among U.S. defensemen this season (12-29-41) and Boston’s Tory Krug was tied for the lead in goals among U.S. defensemen (12). They didn’t make the cut, either. Those that did will be asked to play a distinctive style while proving difficult to play against. It’s one that might prove recognizable to those familiar with what Bylsma often refers to as “Pittsburgh Penguins ice hockey,” but it won’t be an exact duplication of such. “I don’t want to say it’s watered down; we’re going to have seven days to build, starting with the first practice,” Bylsma said. “We won’t be playing exactly how the Pittsburgh Penguins play. The international ice, bigger ice, different aspects of that game we think are going to be important. So, it isn’t just taking off the Penguins logo and put on the USA logo and hand them the booklet. “I think we’re going to be ready. We play Slovakia (Feb. 13), the Russians (Feb. 15) and Slovenia (Feb. 16). Their style of play is significantly different than the North American style, different than the Canadians are going to play, different than the Swiss are going to play, different than we’re going to pay. So we’re initially going to have to be ready continued on page 215

for the international-type of system play from the opposition, it’s going to be different. “I don’t know if it’s fortunate or unfortunate but the first three teams we’ll play will play similar on the big ice.” The goal, as clearly stated, is the gold medal. As for the other contenders, Bylsma is aware he and Team USA aren’t alone in perceiving themselves as worthy of such ambitious expectations. “What I’ve seen is there are four or five and now a sixth country that says they’re going over there to win gold,” Bylsma said. “I’ve seen that from their teams, their own quotes. There’s only one [gold] medal for those six teams that think they can win it. “The Russians, the Canadians say it. The Swiss are going over there with the mindset they can win any game. The Swedes and the Finns, the Czechs, there are lots of teams that have the ability and the look to go on and win in the medal round. I haven’t handicapped it at all. My thinking is we have seven days to get ready to play an elimination game. “Certainly the first three games are important. They get you your seed and they put you in the quarterfinals. But in that first week you’re building your team and you’re building to get ready to be the best team in that elimination game. “We’re going to be a team that thinks we can win every one of our elimination games.” All the way to the gold.
“WHAT I’VE SEEN IS THERE ARE FOUR OR FIVE AND NOW A SIXTH COUNTRY THAT SAYS THEY’RE GOING OVER THERE TO WIN GOLD. I’VE SEEN THAT FROM THEIR TEAMS, THEIR OWN QUOTES. THERE’S ONLY ONE [GOLD] MEDAL FOR THOSE SIX TEAMS THAT THINK THEY CAN WIN IT. ~ Dan Bylsma ~

PENGUINS HOCKEY MOM MEMORIES BY: MICHELLE CRECHIOLO
The Penguins held their first-ever Moms’ Trip on their recent twogame, four-day road swing through Los Angeles and Phoenix. A few of the moms were kind enough to share some cute and funny (but not too embarrassing) anecdotes on their sons. Enjoy. LINDA NISKANEN When he was younger, Matt Niskanen needed someone to play goalie for him as he practiced shooting pucks in the basement. And being the dedicated hockey mom that she is, his mother Linda volunteered. “I had a boat cushion for a chest protector and I used my softball glove as a catcher, and we’d shoot until he started hitting it too hard,” Linda laughed, who strapped couch cushions onto her legs for goalie pads. “And then we had to buy the Shooter Tutor and I just stood in the background. He would have been 8, 9 years old. He just started hitting it too hard, so I had to get out of the net. The only equipment I had was a helmet. Everything else was makeshift. It was fun. We had many, many evenings downstairs.” Linda revealed that Matt had been in talks with Mario Lemieux long before he was traded to his team and the owner/legend started signing his paychecks. “He wrote to Mario Lemieux when he was in fourth grade,” Linda said. “He brought a library book home about Mario and he wrote to him and offered a puck if he would send him an autographed photo.

THE PENGUINS HELD THEIR FIRST-EVER MOMS’ TRIP ON THEIR RECENT TWO-GAME, FOUR-DAY ROAD SWING THROUGH LOS ANGELES AND PHOENIX.
And we still have that autographed photo of Mario Lemieux.” So Mario accepted Matt’s offer? “Mm-hmm,” smiled Linda, adding, “Matt sent a puck back.” CONNIE SUTTER Brandon Sutter is known for being a mellow, easygoing and personable teammate. But when he was little, his mother Connie said it was a different story. “He was a little bit of a terror, to be completely honest with you,” Connie laughed. “He had a lot of energy and he didn’t like to sleep a lot, so he was a busy little man. He kept me up a lot of nights.” Fortunately for his poor mother, Brandon grew out of that stage and developed the laidback personality he still has today. “He was always a pretty laidback kid,” she said. “He didn’t love to go to school, we had to work on the school a little bit (laughs). But you know, as he’s gotten older and I’ve watched him grow through hockey, he’s a pretty laidback guy. He doesn’t get too high or too low, and I think that’s a really good quality.” But while Brandon may be laidback, that certainly doesn’t mean he’s quiet. “Whenever I would go to school to the parent-teacher interviews, they’d say, you know, he’s a little chatty,” she laughed. “He’s still a little chatty and I think maybe he gets that a little bit from his mama. He was a pretty fun-loving kid. He liked to have fun.” continued on page 236

MARY ANN VITALE Joe Vitale had health problems in his infancy — he was born with two kidney problems — that created rocky times for his parents Sam and Mary Ann. It was an incredibly frightening period for them. “It was scary to have a baby that’s born and have these unknowns,” she said. “The doctor told us at the time that had they not discovered the problem, he would have had a life expectancy of five. So that’s a scary thing for a mom to face. “Then not knowing when the surgeries were going to end, how long this was going to take, it was a lot. But then he came back stronger, and I always felt that he must have had a purpose. He loves sports, and he developed a passion for hockey mostly by the time he was 10. He did a lot of sports up until then. He did swimming, he did hockey, he did soccer, he did football. He did a lot of them. But he decided that hockey was where he was going to take off and he pursued it. Much more than he did school sometimes [laughs].” Having a big family helped Joe grow and develop as a hockey player. “As a little one, he was the third boy, so he kept up with his two older brothers,” Mary Ann said. “And I think that’s what helped him out with hockey, is that he learned to play with them. Basically he was two years younger than his older brothers and he played with them on the same team, which kind of pushed him a little bit. He was competitive, a hard worker, determined, didn’t like to lose.” That mindset also helped the kid from St. Louis, a city not known for being a traditional hockey market, scratch and claw his way into the NHL. “Coming from St. Louis, there weren’t a lot of people that go all the way into the NHL,” Mary Ann said. “So it’s kind of a surprise. It’s like there’s times that it just doesn’t seem real. He’s worked hard at it and he went through a lot of obstacles and it was a hard road for him. Many times you sit there and you think about [how] it wasn’t going to happen, it was too far out. They used to say in St. Louis it was like finding a needle in a haystack to come out and be able to play at that level. So we were really proud of him and excited he got that far.”

March 21-23, 2014. Round-robin games will be played at Ice Castle. Championship games at CONSOL Energy Center. Every player in the tournament will receive a ticket the Penguins game on Sunday, March 23. Participants in Championships games will sit in Party Suites. • 36 adult hockey teams competing in 4 divisions: A, B, C+, C• 13 Players, including goalie, per team.
BATTLE CAMP Hockey is a physical sport, thus learning and understanding how to use your body to not only control the puck in tight areas but to play physically and strategically without the puck against your opponent is an essential part of a hockey players development. This camp teaches your kid how to Battle along the boards, with the puck and in front of the net. One hour and 10 minutes of instruction during three days.
TUNE-UP FOR TRYOUTS AND TUNE-UP FOR GOALIES This camp provides skill development and power-skating instruction from Cliff Loya and Max Ivanov. All goalies will received instruction from Mike Chiasson and Matt Wynn.
SPRING SKATE/ SKILLS Penguins Hockey Development’s Skate/Skills program provides your player with the extra skill development they need. Half the session is devoted to power skating, while the other half focuses on puck skills.
INSTRUCTIONAL 3-ON-3 Hockey is a game of creating opportunities in small spaces. Big Ice 3-on-3 leagues do not allow players to simulate these situations. This makes it easy for them to develop bad habits. In Penguins Hockey Development’s Cross Ice 3-on-3, the players will play on a third of the ice. This ensures that the puck will always be around them, while forcing them to make quick decisions. Goalies will get plenty of realistic shots, not just breakaway after breakaway.
