GAME

NOTES By: Bob Grove

THE SERIES [VS] SHARKS

The Penguins and San Jose Sharks meet here at CONSOL Energy Center in Games One and Two of the 2016 Stanley Cup Final. Games Three and Four will be played in San Jose on June 4 and June 6, with Game Five if necessary set here on June 9. A Game Six would be played in San Jose on June 12, and a Game Seven would be played here on June 15. . . This is the Penguins’ fifth appearance in the Final and the Sharks’ first. . . The Penguins got here by beating the New York Rangers in five games in the first round, the Washington Capitals in six games in the second round and the Tampa Bay Lightning in seven games in the Eastern Conference Final. . . The Sharks reached the Cup Final by defeating the Los Angeles Kings in five games in the first round, the Nashville Predators in seven games in the second round and the St. Louis Blues in six games in the Western Conference Final. . . Thus both teams had played 18 games prior to the start of this series. . . Penguins’ coach Mike Sullivan began his NHL career by playing three seasons with the Sharks from 1991 to 1994. He played in 171 games for San Jose. . . San Jose defenseman Paul Martin played for the Penguins for five seasons, ending in 2015, while Sharks’ forward Nick Spaling played here last season. . . These continued on page 14

13

continued from page 13

teams have played 35 regular season games against each other, with the Penguins going 14-14-4 with three ties. But Pittsburgh has won only five of its last 23 games against the Sharks after beginning its history against them by going 9-1-0 with two ties in the initial 12 meetings. . . When the Penguins earned a 5-1 victory in San Jose on Dec. 1, it snapped a 12-game winless streak in San Jose in which they went 0-9-2 with one tie. It was more than 18 years between wins for the Penguins in San Jose, on the calendar the longest road winless streak against any team in Pittsburgh history. . . The teams have split their last six games, with each team counting a shootout victory in that span. . . San Jose is 2-for-24 on the power play in its last seven games against Pittsburgh. . . San Jose’s Joe Thornton has 15 goals and 47 points in 42 career games against the Penguins, a 1.11 points-per-game performance. The only active player averaging more points per game against Pittsburgh is Dallas’ Jason Spezza (1.17). . . These are the two highest-scoring teams in the Stanley Cup playoffs and the only teams averaging more than 3.0 goals per game.

THE PENGUINS

Pittsburgh’s previous Cup Final appearances were in 1991, a six-game victory over the Minnesota North Stars; in 1992, a four-game win over the Chicago Blackhawks; in 2008, a six-game loss to the Detroit Red Wings; and in 2009, a seven-game victory over the Red Wings. . . continued on page 16

continued from page 14

Pittsburgh is trying to become the ninth team in NHL history to win four or more Stanley Cups, joining Montreal, Toronto, Detroit, Boston, Chicago, Edmonton, the New York Rangers and the New York Islanders. . . Should this series go seven games, the Penguins will play 25 games in this post-season, the most in one playoff year in their history. . . Over the last 15 seasons, the Penguins are tied with Chicago, Detroit and New Jersey for the most appearances in the Cup Final (three). . . The Penguins’ Game Seven win over Tampa Bay in the Eastern Conference Final was their first Game Seven win on home ice in 21 years since beating Washington, 3-0, in 1995. . . Each of the Penguins’ three previous Stanley Cup championships were won with a coach behind the bench who did not coach the team the previous season, and Sullivan is hoping to make it four. Should the Penguins win the 2016 Cup, it would mark the second straight time Pittsburgh won the Cup after changing coaches in mid-season. . . Pittsburgh is 7-3 at home in these playoffs and 5-3 on the road. . . Matt Cullen (Carolina 2006) is hoping for his second Stanley Cup. . . The Penguins have never won the Cup on home ice.

Q & A SPOTLIGHT DO YOU REMEMBER WHERE YOU WERE WHEN THE PENGUINS WON THE CUP IN ‘91, ‘92 OR ‘09? “In 1991, I was part of a local community theater production. I was listening Nick Stratigos, his wife Cindy and backstage and got yelled children Melina, Lizzy and Erik. at for being too loud when the Penguins scored their eight goals! In 1992, I was sick as a dog on a couch watching the game. In 2009, I was in my living room with my young children. My son said ‘Daddy, there are only 6.5 seconds left. Don’t worry, the game is over.’” — Nick Stratigos, Section 217, Season Ticket Holder Since 1990

“I was in a friend’s family room watching the clinching game versus the North Stars in ‘91. I worked for JCPenney then, and was the Men’s Merchandiser in Monroeville. After the win, I had to get to the South Side to a graphics t-shirt print shop to pick up the Cup Champion shirts for my store. I probably made a dozen trips that day, hauling about 60-70 dozen shirts per trip. . . in a Corolla!” — Jim Dougherty, Section 221, Season Ticket Holder Since 2005

“In 2009, I was watching Game Seven with my family, or at least the beginning of it. As the minutes ticked down, I started to realize the ramifications of the situation. I looked over at my family with a few minutes to go and they were sleeping. Are you kidding me? My wife saw me sitting there sweating and not moving and asked what was wrong. I told her, ‘It was Game Seven, that is all I should have to say.’ When the final whistle blew, I jumped up and there was no one to celebrate with, so I ran over and jumped into the wall and yelled. I woke everyone up, but at least they knew we won the Cup.” — Mike Lyons, Section 210, Season Ticket Holder Since 1997 continued on page 20

“I watched the ‘91 and ‘92 games at home. Game Seven of the ‘09 Cup actually happened on the same night of my daughter’s high school graduation! We had updates throughout the first two periods, but made it home to watch the third. I stayed up Joe Crawford and his wife on the ice with Mario Lemieux in 2002. all night and went to work on Saturday morning. Afterwards, I went to the Igloo to buy some swag and a bunch of players were there buying stuff as well — including Sid, who came out with the Cup. It was so awesome!” — Joe Crawford, Section 122, Season Ticket Holder Since 2003 “In ‘91 and ‘92 I was a kid and was forced to go to bed, so I listened to it on the radio at an undetectable volume. In ’09, I had a vacation scheduled with my girlfriend’s family that took place during Games Five-Seven. Knowing there could still be a Game Seven, I told my girlfriend that I might leave vacation early for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. She balked at the idea, and we refrained from talking about it. We watched Game Six from a tiki bar in Florida. After the Penguins won to tie the series at 3-3, I looked at her and she just defiantly shot back a ‘NO.’ For the next three hours, I did my best to persuade her to leave her family vacation early with me for Game Seven. (She was a Penguins fan too, but her degree of fandom had not yet reached those levels). Unselfishly, she reluctantly agreed to ride with me from the Gulf of Mexico to the Canadian border, in less than 24 hours. We met my brother in Detroit, coming off of one hour of sleep, and made it to the game with 30 minutes to spare! It was definitely the most memorable experience I’ve ever had.” — Robert Schmidt, Section 231, Season Ticket Holder Since 2005

“In 1991, I was at a party for my little sister’s baptism. In 2009, I was on a mission trip, but I remember running around telling everyone we won and playing Queen’s ‘We are the Champions.’” — Joseph Carpini, Section 234, Season Ticket Holder Since 2005

THROUGH SUMMER MONTHS By Roberto Bagnato

The arrival of spring and warmer weather typically means the beginning of summer sports and activities and the end of hockey season. At the UMPC Lemieux Sports Complex, hockey is played 365 days a year with the arrival of spring signaling the start of the Penguins Selects season. The Selects teams first held tryouts in early April with some of Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania’s top youth talent making the final cut. In total, 14 teams of players were selected for the following divisions and age groups: 2009 MITE Elite and AAA

2005 Peewee Elite and AAA

2008 MITE Elite and AAA

2004/2005 Peewee Female

2007 Squirt Elite and AAA

2004 Peewee Elite

2006/2007 Squirt Female

2003 Bantam Female

2006 Squirt Elite and AAA Over a seven week period, the players are conditioned with 10 hours of on-ice practice focusing on skill development led by experienced head, assistant and goalie coaches. Additionally, the players also undergo 10 off-ice dryland training sessions where speed, stamina and endurance are worked on. Collectively, these sessions work towards improving the individual skill of each player while also working on team concepts and competencies. The on-ice and off-ice training sessions are put to the test during each team’s culminating tournament. The 2004-07 boys’ teams will be competing in the North American Spring Showcase Tournament on June 3-5, 2016 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The boys will be competing against 300 of North America’s strongest teams in the AA, AAA, and ELITE divisions. Meanwhile, the girls’ teams will also be heading to Toronto on May 20-22, 2016 to compete in the Victoria Day Spectacular. Congratulations to all Penguins Selects players for making their respected teams! Good luck at your final tournaments in Toronto!

PENGUINS PROFILE

BRYAN

RUST By: Mark Madden

28

Even after winger Bryan Rust netted a late third-period breakaway to seal a necessary victory in Game Six of the Eastern Conference Final at Tampa Bay on May 24, he still considered himself an “energy guy.” “My breakaway percentage is now one-for-10,” Rust said, laughing. “So I’m still relied upon more for my energy.” Rust was exaggerating — a little. When it comes to breakaways, Rust’s hands can betray what his skates have earned. But the rookie from Pontiac, MI, has had a dandy playoff regardless of his conversion rate when he’s one-on-one with the goalie. After 16 post-season games, he had three goals and three assists to go along with a plus-8 mark. And when he really needed to net a breakaway, Rust did. Rust’s Game Six goal with 2:08 left in regulation stanched a furious Lightning comeback which saw them cut a 3-0 deficit to 3-2 with two third-period tallies. Rust’s goal was followed by a Nick Bonino empty-netter. The final was 5-2, Penguins. A pass by Chris Kunitz got Rust behind Tampa Bay’s defense. He deked, went forehand and deposited the puck behind Lightning goalie Andrei Vasilevsky. “[Kunitz] saw me the whole way,” Rust said. “By the time I yelled, the pass was already on its way. I saw the weak-side defenseman wasn’t there, so I just decided to take off. “I’ve had enough breakaways this year to realize that shooting hasn’t been working for me. So I listened to our pre-scouting a little bit, and tried to deke hard to his glove side.” Rust’s joy after scoring was evident. Relief for everyone wearing a Penguins sweater quickly followed. “They had come back, and there were only two minutes left in the game,” said Rust, 24. “It kind of relaxed guys a little bit. We didn’t want to let up the last two minutes, but you could take a deep breath.” Rust was quick to credit one of his fellow rookies, goaltender Matt Murray. Murray made 29 stops to grab the victory. “He played great,” Rust said. “He made a lot of huge saves to keep it under control in the third, and also in the first two periods. It was good to have him to calm everybody down. “We knew that they were going to come hard [in the third period], and that we had to respond. We were bending a little bit, but we didn’t break.” continued on page 31

29

continued from page 29

Rust gets in fast and hard on the forecheck. Penguins’ assistant general manager Bill Guerin likes his aggressiveness. “You can play safe, and that will be fine,” Guerin said. “That’s good right off the hop. But, eventually, what do you do? What do you bring to the table? I think Bryan knows he’s capable of making plays. He’s capable of putting up a goal here or there, or making a nice pass. He’s capable of that. I think he knows that. And he does it at the right times.” Rust stirs the pot, too. He often draws the ire of foes, and instigates them into taking the odd penalty. “I didn’t think I was that big of a deal to have somebody maybe take some liberties with me or try and get under my skin as I’m trying to get under his skin,” Rust said. “It’s definitely kind of fun to be a part of a thing like that.” Rust had four goals, seven assists and a plus-1 mark in 41 regular-season games for the Penguins. But Rust’s biggest goal of the campaign — and his career — was undoubtedly his Game Six dagger vs. the Lightning. “It’s up there, if not at the top of the list,” said the 5-foot-11, 192-pound University of Notre Dame product. “For sure.”

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, has been co-owner of the Penguins since 1999. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including ten straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past eight years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open CONSOL Energy Center in August, 2010. The facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. The Penguins ownership group, local labor organizations and members of the Pittsburgh business community honored Lemieux in 2012 with a statue to commemorate his career and contributions to the city and the region. Appropriately named “Le Magnifique,” the statue, by nationally-acclaimed sculptor Bruce Wolfe, can be seen outside the Trib Total Media gate at CONSOL Energy Center. RON BURKLE CO-OWNER

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in technology, retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, has been co-owner of the Penguins for more than 16 years. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they became one of the most outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. The Penguins reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009 and won the Cup in ‘09. The team’s ownership has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign many of the team’s young core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year — leading to ten straight playoff berths, and three appearances in the conference finals in the past eight years. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award. DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT

David Morehouse is chief executive officer and president of the Penguins, overseeing all aspects of the team’s operation. The Penguins have become one of the NHL’s strongest business entities during his tenure — selling out every game for eight-plus seasons, setting new standards for corporate sales and television ratings and increasing their focus on innovative youth marketing. Morehouse joined the team as a consultant on the arena project in 2004 and was named team president in April 2007. He was given the additional responsibilities of chief executive officer in August 2010. Under his leadership, the Penguins have reshaped their strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, community interaction, corporate outreach and cutting-edge technology. Beyond that, the Penguins have led all U.S.-based NHL teams in local television ratings for six-straight seasons and rank among the league leaders in social media followers, website traffic and merchandise sales. A strong commitment to fan outreach includes an annual event where players personally deliver season tickets to fans’ homes and a special preseason game were all 18,000 tickets are distributed free to local youth. Morehouse also was a driving force behind the new UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, which opened in August, 2015. It is the first facility to combine hockey with a world-class medical center and sports performance complex. Morehouse joined the Penguins following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill — as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

MIKE SULLIVAN HEAD COACH

Mike Sullivan was named the 22nd head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins on Dec. 12, 2015. Prior to being promoted to Pittsburgh, Sullivan, 47, spent the first two-plus months of the 2015-16 season as the head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. During his 23-game tenure in WB/S, his club went 18-5, which was good enough for first place in the Atlantic Division. Sullivan’s club also had a franchise-best 11-game winning streak. Sullivan has 13 years of coaching experience at the professional level. He served two seasons as the Boston Bruins head coach from 2003-06. Sullivan also spent 11 years as an NHL player from 1991-2002. A native of Marshfield, Massachusetts, Sullivan began his coaching career in 2002-03, starting the season as head coach of the AHL’s Providence Bruins before joining the NHL’s Bruins as an assistant coach late in the year. He was promoted to head coach of the NHL Bruins at age 35 in 2003-04, winning a Northeast Division crown in the first of his two years at the helm. As the head coach in Providence, Sullivan compiled a record of 41-17-9-4 (.669 pct.) in 71 games before his promotion to Boston. Sullivan served as an NHL assistant coach for seven-consecutive years from 2007-14 with Tampa Bay, the NY Rangers and Vancouver. In addition to his professional coaching experience, Sullivan has twice coached the United States internationally. He was the head coach at the 2007 World Championship and an assistant coach at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turino, Italy. During the 2014-15 season, Sullivan was a member of the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks player development staff. Sullivan’s 11-year NHL career began with the expansion San Jose Sharks in 1991-92 and included stops in Calgary, Boston and Arizona. A penalty-kill specialist, Sullivan recorded 54 goals (16 shorthanded) and 136 points in 709 NHL games. Sullivan was drafted by the New York Rangers in the fourth round (69th overall) of the 1987 NHL Draft. He played four years of collegiate hockey at Boston University from 1986-90, serving as the Terriers captain as a senior. Sullivan represented the U.S. as a player at the 1988 World Junior Championship. For full bio, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

MIKE BALES GOALTENDING COACH

Mike Bales is in his third season as the Penguins goaltending coach after serving the previous two seasons as the team’s goaltending development coach from 2011-13. Under his guidance, Marc-Andre Fleury has compiled two of the finest seasons of his career. During the 2014-15 campaign, Fleury established a franchise record with 10 shutouts, a figure that led the entire NHL. When he was in his role as goaltending development coach, Bales helped lead the scouting efforts that led to Pittsburgh choosing reigning AHL Goaltender of the Year Matt Murray and 2013 second-round pick Tristan Jarry. Bales, a native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, spent 18 seasons playing professionally from 1992-2010, including stints in the NHL with Boston and Ottawa. Bales also saw action with teams in the AHL, IHL, Germany, Sweden and Northern Ireland. He was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the fifth round (105th overall) of the 1990 NHL Draft. Before turning pro, Bales played three collegiate seasons with Ohio State University of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) from 1989-92. Whether it’s listening in on coach Mike Sullivan’s pregame speech, meeting to Carl Hagelin at the airport the night he was traded to Pittsburgh, getting a tour of Beau Bennett’s childhood home, or traveling to Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, with Sidney Crosby as he trains for the upcoming season, In The Room delivers unique, unprecedented coverage of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The show has won back-to-back Emmy Awards as the best sports series in the Mid-Atlantic region in both 2014 and 2015. “The idea of doing our own show developed because of the success of HBO’s 24/7 Road to the Winter Classic in 2010-11,” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse. “We got a lot of positive feedback from our fans about the unbelievable access to players and coaches. With In The Room, we can continue to show fans a side of the team they’ve never seen before.”

SPRING

THRILLS By: Jason Seidling

“[Phil] Kessel was our main target,” Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford told the media gathered in the visiting locker room at CONSOL Energy Center shortly before dinner on July 1 of last year’s offseason. “When you look at his goal-scoring ability and his speed, that was the ideal player we were looking for.” Heading into the Stanley Cup Final, nobody can question those words. Kessel has been Pittsburgh’s most dangerous goal-scoring threat through the first three rounds, and has put himself at the forefront of the Conn Smythe Trophy debate should the Penguins go on to defeat the San Jose Sharks here in the Stanley Cup Final. “He traded for me, and I’m happy to be here,” Kessel said when asked about Rutherford following a Game Three defeat of Tampa Bay in the Eastern Conference Final. “I’ve never been this far, so it’s been a great experience.” The 2016 postseason experience continues to go further and further, and get better and better, thanks in large part to the big goals Kessel has delivered. In Round Two against Washington, Kessel opened the scoring in what proved to be the series-clinching Game Six victory by tallying the first two goals of the night. Hours later, with the Penguins looking as if they might squander what was a 3-0 lead, Kessel helped end the series by combining with Carl Hagelin to set up Nick Bonino for the overtime winner. continued on page 78

77

continued from page 77

When the Penguins eliminated the New York Rangers in the fifth game of the opening round, Kessel made sure an early push by the Rangers came up futile, as he had a goal and an assist in the opening period to wash away two New York goals. The Penguins ended up 6-3 victors, erasing their tormentors from the previous two playoff runs. “[The pucks are] going in and it’s nice,” Kessel said after collecting two points (1+1) in Game Three against Tampa Bay to extend his playoff career-long point streak to six games. “It’s a lot of fun and it’s the best time of the year. It’s really very enjoyable.” Goals aren’t the only thing Kessel has provided the Penguins here in the playoffs. He’s also been a menace on the forecheck alongside fellow speedster Hagelin. And he’s also come back several times deep into the defensive zone to eliminate scoring chances in the slot. His most memorable defensive play came in Game Three versus the Lightning when he broke up Jonathan Drouin’s pass attempt, hustled to the ensuing loose puck in the neutral zone, sped past Tampa Bay’s star blueliner Victor Hedman and fired a shot off the pad of Andrei Vasilevskiy that Hagelin converted into a goal on the rebound. “You can define competitiveness in different ways, and what I’ve grown to appreciate about Phil is his competitiveness, especially down the stretch here in the playoffs when the stakes are high,” head coach Mike Sullivan said. “He’s played extremely well for us. I think he’s been receptive to our coaching message. We all have areas of our game where we have strengths and weaknesses. With all of our players, we try to improve our overall games in whatever areas that we can. Phil is no different. We try to challenge him to improve his overall game, and I think he’s been receptive to that.”

SCOUTING THE

SHARKS By: Ashley Vesci

Here’s a look at the key players on the Sharks roster heading into the 2016 Stanley Cup® Final.

MARTIN JONES | G The Sharks acquired Martin Jones from the Los Angeles Kings last summer for a first-round draft pick, and it’s a move that’s paid off. The 26-year-old has been solid for San Jose in his first season with the club. During the regular season, Jones started in 65 games for the Sharks and earned 37 wins — which ranked third among all NHL goaltenders in that category. Luckily for the Sharks, Jones has carried that success into the postseason. Entering the series, he led the NHL in playoff wins with 12 and shutouts with three — and two of those shutouts came back-to-back on May 17 and May 19 versus the St. Louis Blues.

JOE PAVELSKI | C Joe Pavelski has done an excellent job of leading the Sharks in the postseason, not only as team captain — but also as their top point producer. During the regular season, Pavelski finished second on the team with 78 points while his 38 goals were the most on the team and fifth-best in the NHL. As good as he was in the regular season, Pavelski has been even more impressive in the playoffs. Through the first three rounds, he led the NHL in goals with 13 and ranks second on the team in points with 22.

91

continued from page 91

LOGAN COUTURE | C Right up there with Pavelski in the NHL and team point race is Logan Couture. Unfortunately, Couture had to miss a large portion of the regular season after undergoing surgery for a fractured tibia, but he has made a tremendous comeback. During the regular season, the Sharks went 32-15-5 with Couture vs. 14-15-1 without him. Entering the series with Pittsburgh, Couture led the NHL in postseason points with 24 (8+16) and was coming off an incredible performance in Game Seven against St. Louis where he finished with a goal and two assists.

BRENT BURNS | D Brent Burns may be the most dynamic player on San Jose’s roster. Burns’ 27 goals during the regular season led all NHL blueliners and he broke several franchise records for defensemen. Burns, who measures out at 6-foot-5 and 230 pounds, established new highs for goals, assists (48) and points (75) in a single season and became the first Sharks defensemen to score a goal in four consecutive games. Burns has seen just as much success in the postseason, leading all NHL defensemen with six goals, 14 assists and 20 points through three rounds.

JOE THORNTON | C At 36 years old and in his 11th season as a San Jose Shark, Joe Thornton has finally made it to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in his career. The man nicknamed ‘Jumbo Joe’ and his brilliant playmaking skills have helped the team to get to where they are. He finished the regular season tied for fourth in the NHL in points with a career-high 82, while his 63 assists ranked second in the league. Thornton has been just as dynamic in the postseason. Heading into the final round, his 15 assists were second in the NHL just behind his teammate Couture.

AROUND THE NHL

By: Mike Prisuta

PETE AND RE-PETE:

San Jose advanced to the first Stanley Cup Final in franchise history after missing the playoffs in 2014-15. The last NHL team to achieve such a turnaround was New Jersey in 2011-12. Both pulled it off under head coach Pete DeBoer, who was in his first year with each team on each occasion.

LOGAN’S RUN: Logan

Couture had a goal and two assists in San Jose’s series-clinching, 5-2 win over St. Louis in Game Six of the Western Conference Final. It was Couture’s third three-point game of the postseason and all three occurred in series-winning games. He became the third player in NHL history to record three such games in a postseason (Jari Kurri, 1985; Wayne Gretzky (1985, 1988 and 1993).

CALIFORNIA DREAMIN’:

A Californiabased team has advanced to the Stanley Cup Final for the third time in the past five seasons (Los Angeles, 2012 and 2014) and for the fourth time in the last seven seasons (Anaheim, 2007).

SEVEN AGAIN: The

Penguins’ Game Seven victory over the Lightning was the fifth Game Seven of the 2016 postseason and the second straight in an Eastern Conference Final. The Lightning defeated the New York Rangers in Game Seven last season. The Penguins appeared in a Game Seven for the sixth time in their last eight playoff seasons.

HOME SWEET HOME: Home

teams improved to 97-69 all-time in Game Sevens (.584) with the Penguins’ victory over the Lightning (3-2 in 2016).

FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING:

Tampa Bay’s Anton Stralman suffered the first Game Seven loss of his career (7-1) when the Lightning lost to the Penguins. The only players in NHL history with more Game Seven victories than Stralman and the Penguins’ Carl Hagelin (7-1) are Brad Richards, Glenn Anderson and Ray Bourque (eight each).

HOCKEY

ETIQUETTE 101 Our goal? To create an awesome game experience for all fans! Help make that happen by remembering the following: 1.

DO NOT ENTER OR EXIT THE SEATING AREA DURING PLAY! Hockey is fast — and goals can be missed in an instant. Fans moving through rows and up aisles can block the view of an entire seating area. Wait until the whistle blows to make your move. HINT #1: The red light above the penalty boxes is lit for TV timeouts. TV timeouts occur at the first whistle stops inside the 14:00, 10:00, and 6:00 minute mark of each period, EXCEPT following an icing call or goal. When the light comes on, this is your chance to make a dash to the restroom or your seats!

T:8.5”

B:8.75”

S:7.5”

HINT #2: The concourse TVs now feature a countdown clock during the intermissions, smart huh? Thank the season ticket holders for recommending this awesome idea! 2.

NO LEANING! We know you are into the game, but leaning creates a ripple effect, affecting the view of the fans in the rows behind you. Sit back so all can enjoy the game!

3.

KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE PUCK! Pucks can hurt when they enter the seating area!

4.

CONSOL Energy Center is a non-smoking facility; smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, is prohibited.

5.

It’s hard to like fans of the opposing team, we get it. However, we think it is pretty cool that they chose to come to our building. Be aware of children sitting around you and let the guys on the ice do the talking!

6.

Cheer, clap and let the players know you are here! Hockey is the best sport to watch live — have fun!

NICK BONINO

2015.16 REGULAR

SEASON RECAP By: Ashley Vesci and CJ Harvey

Here’s a look back at your 2015-16 Pittsburgh Penguins:

BIG ADDITIONS Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford was busy this past summer. His biggest move came when he acquired superstar winger Phil Kessel from Toronto (along with forward Tyler Biggs and defenseman Tim Erixon) in exchange for forwards Kasperi Kapanen and Nick PHIL KESSEL Spaling, defenseman Scott Harrington and a 2016 thirdround draft pick. Rutherford also made a couple of key transactions late in July, starting when he acquired forward Nick Bonino and defenseman Adam Clendening (later traded to Anaheim) and a 2016 secondround draft pick in exchange for forward Brandon Sutter and a 2016 third-round pick. Rutherford then agreed to terms with forward Eric Fehr on a three-year contract. Those moves — paired with the departures of other players including Paul Martin, Christian Ehrhoff, Blake Comeau, Steve Downie and Daniel Winnik — means the Penguins looked very different heading into this year.

SUPER DUPER One player they lost during the course of the season was a very special one. On Dec. 8, the Pittsburgh hockey community was sad to learn that Pascal Dupuis had announced that he is no longer able to play hockey due to health issues. continued on page 126

PASCAL DUPUIS

continued from page 125

On Dec. 23, 2013, Dupuis tore his ACL and MCL in a game against the Ottawa Senators, and he was forced to miss the remainder of the season. It was discovered during rehab that Dupuis developed a blood clot in his knee, and he was put on blood thinners. Dupuis worked extremely hard to be able to return to the lineup the following season, but after just 16 games it was discovered that the blood clot had traveled to his lung. He was forced to continue taking blood thinners and was unable to participate in the rest of the season. He attempted one last comeback to start the 2015-16 season, but after being forced to leave the ice on Nov. 6 and Dec. 1 for health reasons, he made the decision to step away from the game. Dupuis made his NHL debut in 2000 with the Minnesota Wild, and he went on to play in 871 NHL games — earning a total of 409 points (190G-219A). Dupuis was traded to Pittsburgh in 2007 as part of the Marian Hossa deal, and went on to play nine seasons with the Penguins — winning the Stanley Cup with them in 2009. He was awarded the first-ever Dapper Dan Courage Award on Feb. 17. This award is given to a Pittsburgh-area athlete who demonstrates a willingness to always preserve and serves as an inspiration to his teammates.

COACHING CHANGE Despite their stacked roster, Pittsburgh underachieved through the opening months of the season. While they had a 15-10-3 record, their offense and compete level was lacking. MIKE A team loaded with offensive talent SULLIVAN ranked 27th in the league in offense, while the power play was tied for 26th. That’s when Rutherford decided to make a coaching change. On Dec. 12, Mike Sullivan — who was in his first season as head coach of Pittsburgh’s American Hockey League affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/ continued on page 129

Scranton, leading his team to an 18-5 record and first place in the Atlantic Division — replaced Mike Johnston as head coach of the Penguins. Sullivan’s job was clear: make the Penguins fulfill their potential. To do that, he wanted them to play a certain way and mold an identity built on certain characteristics: speed; compete; resilience. Sullivan knew that it would take time to build that identity. He preached to his players not to focus on the result, but focus on the process. It took some time, but the Penguins finally began to fulfill that identity. After losing their first four games under Sullivan, the team began to turn it around. They bought into Sullivan’s approach and got rewarded. They began scoring in bunches, playing strong defensively and displaying an incredible resiliency in games — particularly when they got down. They got hot going into the All-Star break, continued to gain momentum following it and peaked during the month of March — where they put together a six-game win streak. Most importantly, the Penguins climbed from outside of the playoff picture into a postseason berth.

MVP AND NORRIS Sidney Crosby had just five points in October and ranked tied for 148th in the NHL scoring race at the end of that month. However, he resorted back to his usual dominant self under Sullivan. The captain keyed Pittsburgh’s second-half turnaround and was named team MVP as a result. Crosby was the NHL’s leading scorer since Dec. 12 with 66 points (30G-36A). Overall, Crosby finished third in league scoring with 85 points (36G-49A), including a league-best 21 points in March when he was continued on page 131

named the NHL’s ‘First Star’ of the month. Crosby had points in 15 of 16 games in March, helping the Penguins go 12-4 during their busiest stretch of the campaign. At the other end of the rink, Kris Letang also had a slow start with just one goal in his first 24 games. But by the end of April, he had career highs in goals (16), assists (51) and points (67) and made a serious case for the Norris Trophy as the league’s best defenseman. What’s even more impressive is that his engine doesn’t seem to stop as he averaged the fourthhighest ice time in the NHL (26:56 minutes per game). He hit the 30-minute mark five times in his last 13 regular-season games.

SCOTT WILSON

YOUNG GUNS Other crucial contributors to Pittsburgh’s second-half turnaround were Bryan Rust, Tom Kuhnhackl and Scott Wilson. The three Penguins draft picks were sparks for the bottom-two forward lines, bringing speed, energy and a blue-collar approach while chipping in offensively as well. As a result, they all earned two-year, one-way contract extensions. In total, 12 players who began the season with Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton of the American Hockey League either made the permanent jump to Pittsburgh — including more youngsters in Conor Sheary, Derrick Pouliot and Oskar Sundqvist — or provided a positive cameo appearance. continued on page 132

continued from page 131

MIDSEASON ACQUISITIONS Rutherford made a few key midseason trades, starting when the Penguins traded Rob Scuderi to Chicago for Trevor Daley on Dec. 14. Daley immediately began thriving on Pittsburgh’s blue line, bringing mobility and puck-moving ability. His best game of the year was on March 20, when he scored and dished out two assists in a 6-2 win over Washington. But the Penguins really started sprinting after they acquired speedster Carl Hagelin from Anaheim for David Perron and Adam Clendening on Jan. 14. Hagelin was immediately exceptional. He earned an assist in four of his first five games with the team, but really hit his stride down the stretch when he recorded 19 points in his last 20 games. Of the 10 total goals he scored with the Penguins, six were game-winners. Justin Schultz was the Penguins’ final acquisition. Edmonton traded him to Pittsburgh for a third-round draft pick on Feb. 27, and the defenseman fit right in with the Penguins’ style of play. He finished the season with eight points (1G-7A) and a plus-7 in 18 games with Pittsburgh after recording 10 points (3G-7A) and a minus-22 in 45 games with Edmonton.

EMBRACE THE MOMENT By: Mike Prisuta

They arrived at their first Stanley Cup Final since 2009 on tenacity as well as talent, on effort as much as execution, and on grit in addition to greatness. But mostly, the Penguins got here together. “It’s a good group of guys that want to keep playing hockey,” winger Eric Fehr maintained as the Penguins prepared to face a potential elimination game in Game Six of the Eastern Conference Final at Tampa Bay. “We know what we have to do to be better, we come up with a good game-plan and we do it together. We’re a whole team, we like to roll four lines, we like to use all six ‘D,’ use both goalies. “I think we’ve done a great job of getting everybody involved and I think that makes our team a real tough team to play against.” The Penguins were as tough to play against as they needed to be in extending their season with a had-to-have-it victory on May 24 at Tampa, and again in the Game Seven at CONSOL Energy Center two nights later that delivered the conference championship and punched the Penguins’ ticket to the Final. Just as they had been in the first two rounds against the New York Rangers and the Washington Capitals. Just as the Penguins have come to believe they would be and will be when necessary. “We just believe in each other here,” winger Phil Kessel insisted. “Everyone believes in everyone. We have a great group here and we’re just trying to battle as hard as we can for the next guy. I think we’ve always believed in here. continued on page 143

“I think we’re a confident group and I think if we play our hockey we’re a real good team.” The Penguins have been able to get to their game and play it throughout the playoffs. It didn’t matter when they dropped a game at home to the Rangers and went to New York having ceded (temporarily, as it turned out) home-ice advantage. It didn’t matter when they fell in overtime in the series opener against the Capitals. It didn’t matter when the Lightning waltzed into CONSOL Energy Center and grabbed a quick one-game-to-none lead. And it really didn’t matter when the Lightning pushed the Penguins to the brink of elimination with an overtime triumph on the road in Game Five. The Penguins stayed strong in their belief in themselves and each other and they stayed in the moment, which has been head coach Mike Sullivan’s suggested course all along. “I just told them to embrace the moment,” Sullivan said after Game Six in Tampa Bay, the one that could have ended the Penguins’ season. “These are the types of circumstances where you have an opportunity to write your own story, and that’s what we wanted to do. There are certain things that go on out there that you can’t control. But what you can control is your attitude, your determination, your work ethic, your never-say-die mindset, and I think this group has it. I think continued on page 144

they believe in one another. I think they sincerely care about each other and they play hard for one another. “And I think when you have that dynamic on a team where not only are they playing with one another but more importantly they’re playing for each other, that’s a pretty neat thing to watch. And we’ve witnessed this with this group for a couple of months now. “I’ve said this before, they’re a privilege to coach because of how they go about their business each and every day. And I know that we had a determined group (in Game Six against the Lightning), they had a certain mindset going into this that we’re going to leave it all out there and do everything we can to try to bring this back to Pittsburgh, and that’s what we did. “From their coach, it certainly is rewarding to watch them play as hard as they did tonight.” And with the togetherness that has the Penguins one more series victory from the Cup, one more series triumph from walking together forever. “I think we have confidence in the whole group no matter who it needs to be to step up,” captain Sidney Crosby assessed. “Everyone contributes in their own way. You don’t have to do anything special, you just need to do your job; that’s gotten us this far.”

MURRAY AUTHORS

HISTORIC RUN By: Sam Kasan

Matt Murray began the 2015-16 season as the starting goaltender for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League. He very well may end the year by hoisting the Stanley Cup as a Pittsburgh Penguin. Regardless of what the future holds, Murray has orchestrated one of the greatest stories in NHL history during his meteoric playoff rise that has the Penguins competing for their fifth Stanley Cup Final title in franchise history. The thought that someone so young — Murray turned 22 years old just a week ago — could handle the pressure and championship dreams of an entire franchise and city may seem outrageous. But head coach Mike Sullivan wasn’t the least bit surprised. “That’s part of his DNA,” Sullivan said. “He has a calming influence. He doesn’t get rattled. If he lets a goal in he just continues to compete. That’s an attribute that takes usually years to acquire that. To have it at such a young age is impressive. “One of his biggest strengths is his ability to stay in the moment and not get overwhelmed by the circumstances surrounding him.” The rookie netminder took over the team late in the regular season after starter Marc-Andre Fleury suffered his second concussion of the season. Murray won seven straight games with a 2.02 goals-against average, a .927 save percentage and one shutout to finish the season and helped Pittsburgh lock up the second seed in the Metropolitan Division and home-ice advantage in Round One of the playoffs. continued on page 155

Murray suffered his own injury in the final game of the regular season in Philadelphia and was forced to miss a week of action. The Thunder Bay, Ontario native returned to the lineup in Game Three of the First Round against the New York Rangers, making his NHL postseason debut in the hostile environment of Madison Square Garden. Murray coolly turned aside 16 shots in Pittsburgh’s 3-1 win to take a 2-1 series advantage. He followed that up by batting a perfect 31-for-31 in Game Four to record his first career postseason shutout, becoming the first rookie goalie in Pittsburgh history to post a playoff blanking. Murray’s reward for topping future Hall of Famer Henrik Lundqvist and the Rangers was a showdown against the President’s Trophy-winning Washington Capitals and likely Vezinawinner as NHL goalie of the year Braden Holtby. Murray shined brightest in Game Three against Washington, making a career-high 47 saves to preserve the Pittsburgh victory. After the Penguins upset arguably the best team in the league, even their captain Alex Ovechkin gave the credit to Murray for winning the series. Murray became the first rookie goaltender to win a playoff series against the President’s Trophy-winning team since Calgary’s Mike Vernon upset Edmonton in 1986. But Murray’s run didn’t come without its share of adversity. In Game Four against the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Eastern Conference Final, Murray was pulled for the third period after allowing four goals on 30 shots. continued on page 157

Murray then watched Game Five from the Penguins’ bench as Fleury made his first start of the postseason. But just because Murray didn’t play in the game — a 4-3 overtime loss — that wasn’t a sign that he was being benched. “[The media] always insinuates that when someone doesn’t play they get benched,” Sullivan said. “That wasn’t the case at all. “Matt played a lot of hockey. He played a lot of games. This is a battle. You’re playing every other night. If it was the regular season we wouldn’t play our starting goaltender that many games in a row. As a young goaltender sometimes that’s a tough load to carry. We felt it was the right time for Marc to get an opportunity to get back in the game.” Murray handled the situation, as he has every situation during the entire run, with aplomb. “That’s out of my control,” Murray said. “That’s 100 percent coach’s decision. He’ll make a decision that he thinks gives us the best chance to win. “My job isn’t to worry about his decision. My job is to be ready if my name is called. If my name is called to go out and play my heart out and compete.” Murray’s name was called just one day later. The coaching staff turned back to the neophyte for Game Six with the Penguins’ season on the line and facing elimination. In perhaps the most important two starts of his career, Murray was his usual calming influence and led the Penguins from the brink of elimination to the glory of a Cup Final return. On May 25, Murray celebrated his 22nd birthday. On May 26, Murray celebrated his first career Eastern Conference championship and berth in the Stanley Cup Final. What more can he do for an encore? One thing is certain, he isn’t resting on his laurels. “I just take things as they come,” Murray said. “I focus on staying in the moment.”
