SEASON TICKET HOLDER SPOTLIGHT
SUSAN BODZIACH
Hometown: Pittsburgh, PA Season Ticket Location: 212, A, 7-9 First Season as a Penguins Season Ticket Holder: 1986
WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO BECOME A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS SEASON TICKET HOLDER? My brother and I were both interested in hockey after the USA won the gold medal in 1980. Then with the drafting of Mario Lemieux, our interest was even higher! At draft time, I was 12 and my brother almost 15. In 1986, I went on a bus trip with my mom and my aunt and uncle. My uncle and I always used to play cards together. On the bus trip, he told me if I won, he would buy my brother and me season tickets. And, as luck would have it (or a little cheating from my uncle), I won and he followed through with the season tickets. We sat in section A27 back at the Igloo, until we both graduated from college and my Dad said it was time to pay for our own tickets. Now we sit in Section 212 at CONSOL Energy Center and my husband has joined us as season ticket holders. WHAT CURRENT PLAYER OR TEAM IS YOUR FAVORITE PENGUINS OPPONENT? WHY? I like Henrik Lundqvist. I admire his style and think he is a great person. continued on page 6

HAVE YOU EVER ATTENDED A PENGUINS AWAY GAME? Yes — Toronto, Buffalo, Colorado, Washington and Detroit (night of the Stanley Cup win). DO YOU HAVE ANY UNIQUE PRE OR POSTGAME RITUALS WHEN ATTENDING A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS GAME? Nope, although during the 2009 Susan along with her husband Paul and her brother Bob in Detroit during the Cup season, my husband 2009 Stanley Cup Final insisted that he had to eat a chili dog with onions before each of the elimination games that the Penguins played in that playoff year. And, it always worked!! AS A SEASON TICKET HOLDER, WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST CHERISHED PENGUINS MEMORY? Wow. Not just one memory — Mario Lemieux’s coming out of retirement game, winning Game Six against Boston in 1991 to head to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time and seeing the Stanley Cup win in Detroit in 2009. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO WEAR OR BRING TO A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS GAME? My Penguins sock monkey DO YOU OWN PITTSBURGH PENGUINS MEMORABILIA OR CONSIDER YOURSELF TO BE A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS MEMORABILIA COLLECTOR? I own several sticks that I received from various players as a child. My proudest one is a Mario Lemieux stick that I won at a season ticket holder event prior to the 1991 season. And, I was able to get all of the signatures from the Cup team that year on the stick. DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE PLACE TO EAT AT CONSOL Energy Center? Burgatory AS A PITTSBURGH PENGUINS SEASON TICKET HOLDER, WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE PROMOTIONAL GIVEAWAY AND/ OR EVENT? I love the sock monkey and the garden gnomes.

NOTES By: Bob Grove
THE SERIES [VS] RANGERS
On Jan. 18, the Penguins face the New York Rangers in the fourth and final game this season between the teams. Henrik Lundqvist made 33 saves in a 5-0 shutout victory over Pittsburgh in New York on Nov. 11, and four days later the Penguins claimed a 3-2 home shootout victory when Dan Boyle’s apparent shootout winner was waived off, setting the stage for Brandon Sutter to score and Marc-Andre Fleury to stop Rick Nash for the victory. The last meeting came Dec. 8 in New York, where Evgeni Malkin and Steve Downie scored 24 seconds apart in the final five minutes to forge a tie before the Rangers won in overtime, 4-3, on a Kevin Klein goal. . . Pittsburgh is 3-1-2 in its last six games against New York. . . Five of the last eight games between the teams was decided after regulation, with Pittsburgh winning three of those (all by shootout). . . The Penguins are 6-0-1 in their last seven home games against New York in the regular season, their last regulation loss to the Rangers here coming on Jan. 6, 2012 (1-3). In each of those six home wins, the Penguins have held the Rangers to two or fewer goals. . . Pittsburgh is 7-1-0 in its last eight home afternoon games against New York. continued on page 10

THE SERIES [VS] BLACKHAWKS
On Jan. 21, the Penguins host the Chicago Blackhawks for the only time this season. The teams play in Chicago on Feb. 15. . . This is the first meeting of the teams since Pittsburgh earned a 4-1 victory here last March 30. Sidney Crosby had two goals in that game. . . The Penguins are 4-2-1 in their last seven games against Chicago, the only regulation loss coming in the NHL Stadium Series game at Soldier Field last March 1 (1-5). . . Chicago has scored first in nine of the last 14 games between the teams. . . The Penguins are 7-0-1 with two ties in their last 10 home games against Chicago, their last regulation loss to the Hawks here coming almost 18 years ago on Feb. 22, 1997 (2-5). Pittsburgh is also 10-1-1 with three ties in its last 15 home games against Chicago. The Hawks have scored first in nine of those 15. . . In the last six games here between the teams, both power plays have stuggled — Pittsburgh 1-for-20 and Chicago 1-for-15. . . Crosby has played only four games against Chicago (2+2), while Malkin has played five (2+4). . . Among active players with at least 20 career points vs. Pittsburgh, former Penguin Marian Hossa is sixth in points-per-game (44 points in 41 games, 1.07). continued on page 13

THE PENGUINS
Crosby scored his seventh career overtime goal Jan. 10 at Montreal to give the Penguins a 2-1 victory over the Canadiens. It was his first OT goal since Dec. 3, 2013 at the Islanders. . . Malkin had a goal and assist against Montreal and was three points behind NHL scoring leader Jakub Voracek of Philadelphia at that point. . . The Jan. 21 game here against Chicago is Pittsburgh’s last before the All-Star break. The Penguins will host Winnipeg on Jan. 27 in their first game after the break, then travel to Washington the next night to start a stretch in which they will play seven of nine games on the road. . . Crosby and Malkin will represent the Penguins at the All-Star Game on Jan. 25 in Columbus. . . The Pittsburgh penalty kill ranked second in the NHL at 88.2 percent after the Montreal victory, which saw the Penguins kill all four Canadiens’ power plays. At that point the Penguins were 37-for39 over their last 11 games (94.8 percent). . . The Penguins had only 10 regulation losses at the midway point of the season, their fewest in an 82-game season since Crosby joined the team. Only Nashville (nine) had fewer at that point. . . Christian Ehrhoff led the Penguins with a plus-15 through the first half of the season.

RENEWED
OPTIMISM By: Mike Prisuta
The New Year has brought to the Penguins a renewed optimism and enthusiasm, and has delivered to the locker room a lighter, brighter mood. Victories such as the 2-1 overtime triumph the Penguins earned on Jan. 10 in Montreal will do that for a hockey team. So will reinforcements. “Yeah, it picks everyone up when guys start to get back,” captain Sidney Crosby observed. “You definitely feed off that, the guys’ energy that are back in [the lineup], and seeing some familiar faces, too. “It was a bit of a grind there in December, missing so many bodies.” The “grind” Crosby referenced included the man-games-lost-toinjury count climbing to 176 in advance of the road win in Montreal. But the Penguins had also witnessed of late a parade of players making their way back to active duty, from defenseman Kris Letang on Dec. 12, to winger Kris Kunitz on Dec. 20, to winger Beau Bennett on Dec. 31, to winger Steve Downie on Jan. 2, to defenseman Paul Martin and winger Zach Sill on Jan. 7. Those returns were uplifting for the rest of the team as well as for the returnees. “It’s tough when you see a teammate hurt and you see how that affects them,” Crosby continued. “It’s tough on everyone, too, you feel for the guy. continued on page 24

“I think with guys starting to come back and now definitely with the guys who have come up [from AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton], I think they feel pretty comfortable now, too. So they’re starting to get more and more involved. “All that combined, guys’ spirits are pretty high.” In addition to getting players back who had been unavailable, the Penguins also got one who had been playing elsewhere. Winger David Perron was acquired from Edmonton on Jan. 2 in exchange for forward Rob Klinkhammer and a 2015 first-round draft pick — a transaction that likewise energized the locker room and the troops. “With our dressing room I’d like to think that everyone feels pretty welcome right away,” Crosby explained. “I think we all do our best to make sure that’s the case. “It’s good the guys come in here pretty excited for the opportunity to play here, which is nice, too. They’re excited and that can bring a boost to your team, too. That enthusiasm, that excitement; [Perron] has brought that.” In addition to providing an emotional boost, the returning players allowed Mike Johnston to deploy his players on the ice in the manner he’d prefer. That had to brighten the head coach’s mood. “We’d like to have those three centers,” Johnston explained, referencing Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Brandon Sutter. “Whenever we can run with the three centers, that’s our strength and we have to play with our strength.

“And now we can with some bodies coming back.” Another perceived strength is a deep and talented collection of defensemen, one that’s enhanced on several levels when Martin is in uniform rather than street clothes. “He adds veteran experience,” Johnston We’re definitely observed. “He’s a key penalty killer, a key powerwelcoming back play guy. You look at the guys. That should minutes; he’s normally around 22 minutes a night give us a boost. so he’s a valuable member Sidney Crosby of our defense. “He just gives us an experienced, poised guy back there. He can play against top guys [on the opposition], so we often use him in that situation.” Martin wasn’t on the ice for the Crosby power-play goal that beat Montreal in overtime on Jan. 10. But of the players that were (Crosby, Kunitz, Letang and Malkin), only Malkin had been an every-game staple this season. Such stability clearly pays dividends at even strength as well as on special teams. And the Penguins emerged from their victory over the Canadiens anticipating more reinforcements arriving down the road. They were still without forwards Blake Comeau, Patric Hornqvist and Pascal Dupuis and defenseman Olli Maatta through regular-season game No. 41. So the anticipation heading into January was that there would be even more happy returns. “I’d like to get some concrete lines,” Johnston said. “It’s been sort of juggling lines every night just because of the injuries and players coming in and out of the lineup.” Added Crosby: “We’re definitely welcoming back guys. That should give us a boost.”

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN
Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 16th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including eight straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past seven years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Known as Le Magnifique, Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario and his wife, Nathalie, and their four children live in Sewickley.

RON BURKLE CO-OWNER
Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in technology, retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 16th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for seven-plus seasons. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/ Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award.

DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT
David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Penguins, overseeing every aspect of the team’s operations. Since Morehouse was named President in April, 2007, the Penguins have reshaped their image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010. He reports directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. An emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, has enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.-based NHL teams in local television ratings for five straight seasons. In 2012-13, the Penguins’ rating of 12.66 was the highest achieved by any U.S.-based NHL, NBA or MLB team on a regional sports network since 2002. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins rank among the NHL leaders in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales. Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of the organization’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids ages 5-7 each year. The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He and his wife, Vanessa, have four children and live in Sewickley Heights. For full bios, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

He is the organization’s liaison with building manager AEG Facilities and works closely with AEG on all arena-related events and initiatives. In recent years, CONSOL Energy Center has hosted such national events as the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Second and Third Rounds, the 2012 NHL Draft, the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four and the 2014 U.S. Gymnastics Championships. Williams also is the Penguins’ point man on the development of the former Civic Arena site and the construction of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry. Williams graduated from Penn State University and received a Juris Doctorate from Duquesne University, summa cum laude. He lives in Nevillewood with his wife, Nichole, and six children.
DAVID PEART SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT, SALES
David Peart is in his fifth full season as Senior Vice President of Sales and Service, overseeing all local revenue generating departments for the team including business partnerships, corporate sales, premium seating, ticket sales, broadcasting, and concession and merchandise sales strategy. Under his direction, the Penguins created the team’s Founding Partner Program at CONSOL Energy Center and launched one of the most comprehensive fan engagement initiatives in sports. In 2014, Peart was awarded the InStadium Experience Innovation Award presented by Sports and Entertainment Alliance in Technology for his work with the Penguins’ PensPoints loyalty program. Peart has held senior-level positions with the San Francisco 49ers, Houston Texans, Dallas Stars and Texas Rangers. The Kennedy Township native is a graduate of Point Park University, where he is a member of the Board of Trustees. He and his wife, Julie, have two children.

MIKE LANGE
PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER
One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 40th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.
PHIL BOURQUE
PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK COLOR ANALYST
Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 12th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has cohosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

Grove wrote Pittsburgh Penguins: The Official History of the First 30 Years in 1997 and has contributed game notes to GOAL Magazine inserts or IceTime programs for every Pittsburgh home game since 1986. He was also a contributor to the second edition of Total Hockey and to The Game I’ll Never Forget. He is a senior writer covering hockey for the Pittsburgh Sports Report and also hosts Bob Grove’s Hot Stove on Penguins Radio 24/7.

NOTES
Chicago was 5-4-0 in its past nine games after hosting the Minnesota Wild on Jan. 11, a 4-1 victory in which Marian Hossa, Bryan Bickell and Brad Richards each had one goal and one assist. That left Chicago two points behind Nashville in the Central Division after playing five games in eight days. . . Tonight’s game is the first of seven straight road games for the Hawks, whose next home game is Feb. 9 against Arizona . . . Pittsburgh native Brandon Saad had 12 goals and 28 points in his first 43 games.

LITTLE PENGUINS LEARN TO PLAY
EQUIPMENT PICK-UP 2015 The start of the New Year brought with it the equipment distribution to 1,000 kids who signed up for this year’s Little Penguins Learn to Play Hockey program. Thanks to Sidney Crosby, DICK’S Sporting Goods and Reebok, all kids who signed up received free head-to-toe hockey equipment. All participants had the ability to pick up their equipment at 13 area DICK’S Sporting Goods stores. This year brought a new surprise to the event however, as 50 equipment boxes at random had a golden ticket placed in them. Those fortunate enough to receive one of these boxes get to skate at CONSOL Energy Center for a special on-ice clinic February 18th. This season is the seventh season of the Little Penguins Learn to Play Hockey program and to date have provided 6,200 sets to children looking to play hockey in the area. At the ages of 10 and under, Pittsburgh continues to lead the country with a 120% growth rate each year in hockey participation. For more information please visit pittsburghpenguins.com

Whether it’s providing exclusive behind-the-scenes access to Coach Mike Johnston’s first training camp or audio from mic’d-up game nights with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, In The Room will once again give fans a unique perspective on the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Emmy award-winning, all-access television show, which debuted during the 2011-12 season, can be seen on ROOT SPORTS in Pittsburgh and the NHL Network, in addition to pittsburghpenguins.com. “The idea of doing our own show developed because of the success of HBO’s 24/7, Road to the Winter Classic in 2010-11,” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse. “We got a lot of positive feedback from our fans about the unbelievable access to players and coaches. With In The Room, we can continue to show fans a side of the team and the sport that they’ve never seen before.” The first-ever episode of In The Room in 2011 chronicled Crosby’s return to the lineup after missing more than 60 games due to injury. The show’s staff followed Malkin to Russia to witness his off-season workouts in his home country, and documented a unique workout session with Kris Letang. continued on page 107

Last season’s content ranged from Pascal Dupuis pulling his own tooth on the bench — which became a social media sensation — to Paul Martin providing all access to his Olympic experience in Sochi. Other highlights included the players’ video game marathon on a long flight to Vancouver; Zach Sill’s memorable on-ice exchanges with the Toronto Maple Leafs; and Olli Maatta’s pre-Olympic shopping trip. “We’re able to do this because of the tremendous cooperation of the Penguins players, coaches and hockey operations staff,”
said Leo McCafferty, executive producer of In The Room. “Obviously, at times, you have to get lucky. We once had a microphone on Geno when he scored a hat trick. We had a mic on Pascal when he pulled out his tooth. But it’s given us an opportunity to take fans where they’ve never been before. The best part is, we never know what we’re going to come across next.”

In 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine expanded the Heads UP Pittsburgh concussion awareness program to include a free flexibility kit to the first 2,000 participants in the new testing period that began on June 16. KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE Free cognitive baseline testing was available on a first-come, first-served basis for athletes ages 10-14. For athletes under 10 years of age, a Pediatric version of the test was available at a minimal cost. Community College of Allegheny County once again served as host to testing at its Boyce, North, South and West Hills Center campuses along with UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side. Community College of Beaver County joined the initiative as a new site for testing and education. The entire testing process takes about one hour. Certified athletic trainers from UPMC Sports Medicine supervise the program and testing. While the athletes are being tested, parents meet with the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion staff to learn about the Heads UP Pittsburgh program and how to handle concussions if they occur. Heads UP Pittsburgh, the first program of its kind and a blueprint copied by other NHL organizations, began in 2011 with baseline testing and parental education programs for youth hockey players. In 2012, the Penguins Foundation expanded the program to include athletes of all sports ages 10 to 14. Since the program’s inception, over 13,000 athletes have been tested and over 33,000 people educated. For more information, please visit the Penguins Foundation website at pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org.

HOCKEY IS FOR
EVERYONE For years Western Pennsylvania youth sports have been dominated by the likes of football, basketball and baseball. Recently however, the region has begun to see a change in preference and participation in sports. Hockey is rapidly becoming the most popular and fastest growing sport in the area. Success seen with the Pittsburgh Penguins on the NHL ice has surely created a demand and a certain excitement around the game, however the popularity of hockey goes well beyond the wins and world class talent the Penguins possess. A genuine love for the game is starting to sweep the area. Kids are beginning to play hockey at younger and younger ages thanks to the Little Penguins: Learn to Play Hockey program. This program will allow 1,000 kids, ages 4-8, to receive free head-to-toe gear all thanks to the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and DICK’S Sporting Goods. Since it began in 2008-09 over 5,200 have been introduced to hockey through this program. The Penguins have also teamed up with the DICK’S Sporting Goods, Trib Total Media and the YMCA to create the YMCA Jr. Penguins program which introduces children to the sport through ball hockey. Each year, over 3,100 children participate in organized ball hockey at local YMCAs. Recently the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered together for Project PowerPlay, which will build 12 dek hockey rinks throughout Allegheny County over a threeyear period and allow local residents to play dek hockey for free. Dek hockey is becoming a great way to learn and play hockey without having ice, and was also vital in the development of current Penguins forward Beau Bennett who grew up in sunny California. continued on page 129

In 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation embarked on a new venture, Tablets in Education. This innovative, new program combined the latest in tablet technology with educational apps and content. With the assistance of the Allegheny Intermediate Unit (AIU3), 60 schools in Allegheny County were selected to participate in the first year of the program; distributing 1,200 Kindle Fire HDX 7 tablets to local schools. Each school enrolled in Tablets in Education received 20 Kindle Fire HDX 7 tablets, a mobile charging station and 20 shock resistant covers. Each device was then loaded with over 50 educational apps, books and specialized content. These apps were carefully selected with the assistance of Common Sense Media and the professionals at the AIU3, providing more than $100,000 worth of content. The devices are designed to be utilized for unique educational programs, extended learning programs and programs for children with disabilities. The technology utilized in Tablets in Education is designed to enhance a child’s academic achievement while continuing to support their social development and relationships with adults and peers through the most critical years of an adolescent’s growth and development. A portion of the funding for this new program was made possible by contributions through the EITC (Educational Improvement Tax Credit) program. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation would like to acknowledge the following organizations for their contributions to Tablets in Education: Kindle Education, B.M. Kramer, Common Sense Media, PNC, CONSOL Energy, Trumbull, Northwest Savings Bank, AE Foundation, PPG and Consolidated Graphic Communications.

ICEBURGH A delight for children of all ages, Iceburgh — the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins not only provides fans with exciting game entertainment but this large, energetic bird can also be seen at a multitude of community events and elementary schools throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. Iceburgh arrived on the scene in 1992 and is a staple at all team events. During Penguins’ home games, fans most definitely notice the antics of Iceburgh leading sections of fans in cheers, greeting young children on the concourse or displaying his athleticism on-ice between periods. In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture Sudden Death. He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh wasted no time getting acquainted with his new home at CONSOL Energy Center in September of 2010. You can find Iceburgh sliding down stair banisters, dancing in the stands and tossing t-shirts to fans. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and recently performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. In addition to his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game, Iceburgh makes annual appearances at the Mascot Olympics held in Orlando, FL. If you would like to request an Iceburgh appearance at your next event, please complete the online form by visiting the community section of pittsburghpenguins.com.

DRAFT CLASS
KASPERI KAPANEN
Forward • 1st Round, 22nd Overall Kapanen, the son of former NHL player Sami Kapanen, was the No. 1-ranked European prospect entering the 2014 NHL Draft by Central Registry. During the 2013-14 season, he played professionally for KalPa of the Finnish Elite League where he and Sami were teammates. Beyond the Numbers: Both Kasperi and his father were selected in the NHL Draft by current Penguins GM Jim Rutherford. Sami Kapanen was chosen in the fourth round (87th overall) in the 1995 Draft.
SAM LAFFERTY
Forward • 4th Round, 113th Overall A native of Hollidaysburg, Pa., which is located just outside of Altoona, Lafferty played amateur hockey for the Altoona Trackers of the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL). A graduate of Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts, Lafferty is currently playing college hockey at Brown University. Beyond the Numbers: Although Lafferty’s favorite player growing up was Sidney Crosby, if he had to pick a current Penguins player that he emulates his game after, it would be Brandon Sutter because he is a “responsible, two-way player.” continued on page 153

ANTHONY ANGELLO
Forward • 5th Round, 145th Overall Last season, as a rookie forward with the Omaha Lancers of the United States Hockey League (USHL), Angello placed second among team rookies with 11 goals, while his shooting percentage (14.7%) ranked third overall on the squad. He plans to attend college at Cornell University. Beyond the Numbers: It should come as no surprise that Angello will be attending an Ivy League school because last season he was the co-recipient of the USHL Scholar Athlete Award.
JADEN LINDO
Forward • 6th Round, 173rd Overall As a rookie with the Ontario Hockey League’s Owen Sound Attack in 2012-13, Lindo was named his team’s rookie of the year. Before he suffered a season-ending knee injury last February, he was rated the 96th-best North American prospect by Central Registry. Beyond the Numbers: When Lindo skated for the Toronto Marlboros Minor Midget AAA team in 2011-12, he was teammates with current Erie Otters forward Connor McDavid, who many project to be the top pick in the 2015 NHL Draft.
JEFF TAYLOR
Defenseman • 7th Round, 203rd Overall Helped the Union College Dutch of the ECAC capture the 2014 NCAA Frozen Four National Championship, notching an assist in the semifinal game of the Frozen Four. Taylor led all Union rookie blueliners in scoring with 16 points. Beyond the Numbers: Last season Jeff was named to the ECAC All-Rookie Team as an 18-year-old true freshman.

PROJECT
POWER PLAY The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE completed four more dek hockey rinks for local communities in 2014 as their first-of-its-kind Project Power Play program entered its third year. The new rinks are located in Graham Park in Cranberry Township, Settler’s Cabin in Robinson, Renzie Park in McKeesport and North Park in McCandless. Project Power Play is a $2.3 million initiative designed to build 12 dek hockey rinks in Pittsburgh and surrounding communities over a four-year period. Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield is leading the way by providing $1.5 million in funding, with the Penguins Foundation contributing $800,000. The rinks are multi-purpose courts measuring 155 feet by 75 feet. They include a premier dasher board system, scoreboard, player benches covered by metal shelters, a penalty box, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment. Project Power Play was introduced in 2012, with the first two rinks being built in Banksville Park and Lewis Park in Hazelwood. Four more rinks were added in 2013 at Brookline Memorial Park, Hosanna House Sherwood Event Center in Wilkinsburg, Riverside Park in Oakmont and Richland Community Park. The City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and surrounding communities are providing the land as well as maintenance services, lighting and additional support. Two more rinks will be built in 2015, bringing the total to 12.

PENGUINS PROFILE
DAVID
PERRON By: Mark Madden
Just after playing his first game as a Penguin, winger David Perron said, “The hockey world is so welcoming. It’s my first day, and I almost feel at home.” Perron certainly looked at home. It took just shy of ten minutes for Perron to score in his Penguins debut, tallying at 9:59 of the first period Jan. 3 against visiting Montreal. Perron took a nifty feed from Sidney Crosby and buried a one-timer from the slot to cut Montreal’s lead to 2-1. The outcome wasn’t ideal: The Penguins lost, 4-1. But Perron made his mark, and his play suggested that better was ahead. The Penguins acquired Perron from Edmonton on Jan. 2, giving this year’s first-round draft pick and bottom-six winger Rob Klinkhammer in return. Perron, who can play the left or right side, immediately slotted in on Crosby’s left wing. Perron broke into the league with St. Louis in 2007. He was the Blues’ first-round draft pick that year, going 26th overall. The 6-foot, 200-pound Quebec native moved to Edmonton after 2012-13 and immediately had a career season, posting 28 goals and 29 assists last campaign. Perron, 26, has never played a game in the minor leagues. He had five goals and 14 assists in 38 games this year with Edmonton. Perron’s goal vs. Montreal made the best of a difficult situation. continued on page 162

“Obviously, with the last couple of days here, the energy wasn’t as good as I wanted it to be,” Perron said after his debut. “I was running on adrenaline, and trying to push myself as much as possible. I just didn’t have enough tonight. “But it was good to get to know the guys, first game, and I’m really looking forward to building [something] with them.” The goal was the fun part. Perron enthused about Crosby’s dish. “It’s probably the best pass I’ve ever received. Over two sticks,” Perron said. “I had a good portion of the net to put it in, so it felt good.” Perron was on the road with the Oilers when the trade got made. They were scheduled to play in Denver that evening. His journey to Pittsburgh for the next night’s game was frantic, to say the least. “I met with the coaches this afternoon, to go over the system,” Perron said. “The system, I think, is going to fit my game very well. “There’s a lot of speed through the neutral zone, driving to the net and on the forecheck. In the D zone, I really like the way we play, trying to kill the cycle. I think it’s going to be good.” Perron is a Francophone. But, until arriving in Pittsburgh, Perron has only had one Francophone teammate in the NHL: Edmonton’s Benoit Pouliot. In Pittsburgh, he has four: Simon Despres, Pascal Dupuis, Marc-Andre Fleury and Kris Letang. “That’s another thing different about here,” Perron said. “Those guys have been here for a long time, and it’s fun to have them around.” Assistant coach Gary Agnew is a familiar face: Agnew was a St. Louis assistant during Perron’s tenure with the Blues. The Penguins didn’t have practice or a game on the day after losing to Montreal. After that, the Pens had two days of practice until a scheduled home game vs. Boston. That gave Perron time to catch his breath. “It will certainly be nice,” Perron said. “Tomorrow is a day off. I’m probably going to go around the city and buy some clothes. I’m running low right now.” Perron certainly knows what’s at stake in Pittsburgh. “If you picture something in your head to try to get an opportunity to win the [Stanley] Cup, I can’t see too many chances better than that,” Perron said. “Actually, I don’t think there’s any. So it’s something that I’m extremely lucky and happy to be a part of.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

FIVE THINGS FROM
THE FIRST HALF By: Sam Kasan
The 2014-15 season has reached the halfway mark. With 41 games down, the Penguins had a 25-10-6 record and sat second in the Metro Division — one point behind the NY Islanders. Here’s a cheat sheet looking back at the five most notable things about the first half of the season. NEW ERA
The Penguins ushered in a new era for the team with a change at the top. General manager Jim Rutherford was hired in the summer to return the Penguins to the Promised Land. Rutherford brought in a whole new coaching staff, headed by Mike Johnston. The former Portland (Western Hockey League) bench boss brought a new philosophy and style to the team. Johnston brought aboard assistants Gary Agnew and Rick Tocchet, and retained goaltender coach Mike Bales, to help him lead the club. Under Johnston, the Penguins have implemented an aggressive, puck-possession style of team. The Penguins play together as a tight, five-man unit in all three zones, concentrating on short passes and possession. In the defensive zone, the players collapse more to the net to provide protection and outlets. On the rush, defensemen join — and sometimes lead — to provide another pass option and to create odd-man situations. In the offensive zone, crashing the net has been a point of emphasis.
174
GIST: The new brand of hockey looks much different than the system run in previous years in some ways; in others it’s similar. The Penguins seemed to be getting more and more comfortable with each game. However, they sometimes revert back to old habits at certain times. That’s to be expected considering they’ve only been using the new system for half of a season. Also, injuries (more on that later) have derailed their chance to build a cohesive, consistent lineup. NEW IDENTITY
Over the offseason, the Penguins experienced the most roster upheaval in the last 10 years. Longtime leader Brooks Orpik highlighted a slew of players that left the team either via trade or free agency. Also exiting were James Neal, Matt Niskanen, Jussi Jokinen, Deryk Engelland, Tanner Glass and Joe Vitale, to name a few. The Penguins changed the dynamic of their team with the acquisitions of Patric Hornqvist, Steve Downie, Blake Comeau, Christian Ehrhoff, Nick Spaling and, most recently, David Perron. GIST: The Penguins made an effort to change the identity of their team. GM Rutherford wanted a grittier, more physical team. Rutherford’s personnel moves have accomplished that goal. Downie is a player that lives on the edge — with stints over the line. He’s added a sense of craziness and agitation that the Penguins have been missing. Hornqvist and Perron are gritty players that have great hands and skill. Comeau and Spaling add versatility and depth up front, playing a hard-nosed style. Ehrhoff has been a key, minute-eating piece on the backend. INJURIES (MUMPS)
Injuries are nothing new for the Penguins. This is a team that suffered 529 man-games lost last season, and is somehow remarkably threatening to break the 300-mark again this season. Just 41 games into the year and Pittsburgh has amassed 181 man-games lost. And in odd Pens’ fashion, it’s been of the bizarre variety — whether it’s an unexpected blood clot for Pascal Dupuis, a cancerous tumor of the neck for 20-year-old Olli Maatta or the re-emergence of a 1950s disease like the mumps. The Penguins have already dealt with their share of injury craziness in the past: Tomas Vokoun (blood clot), Kris Letang (stroke), Sidney Crosby (concussion). It’s just been another bizarre continued on page 177

season of a bizarre rash of injuries. At some point things will go back to normal and the team can just deal with broken bones and bruises, right? Or nah? YOUNG D
Over the last several years the Penguins have stockpiled blue chip defensive prospects. And this year, those draft picks are paying dividends. With injuries depleting the defensive corps, Pittsburgh had to dip into the farm system. Youngsters Scott Harrington, Brian Dumoulin and Derrick Pouliot had to step into big roles and play big minutes. Simon Despres, though not much older than the rest, has established himself as one of the most consistent and reliable defenders. Penguins fans have been waiting for years for these young defensemen to take the next step into the NHL, and they finally saw the beginning of that process. MVP

One player the Penguins have been able to rely on all season has been their goaltender. Marc-Andre Fleury has been the team’s most valuable player. Fleury is having one of the best seasons of his career. His personal-best six shutouts are the most in the NHL, while his 21 wins and 2.16 goals-against average both tied for fifth in the league at the midpoint. Fleury, who received a four-year contract extension in November, has been the team’s rock all year. Without him, who knows where the Penguins would be.

Q&A WITH
SIDNEY CROSBY By: Michelle Crechiolo
The Pittsburgh Penguins officially reached the midway point of their first season under new management, a new coaching staff and with a lot of new players on Jan. 10. We checked in with captain Sidney Crosby to see how the team has adjusted to all of those changes. DO YOU HAVE A BETTER SENSE OF WHAT YOUR IDENTITY IS UNDER THIS NEW COACHING STAFF? You know what, it’s been tough. With so many injuries, it’s tough to necessarily nail that down. But I’d like to think we’re a team that likes to play fast and still with a bit of grit at the same time; we can play a physical game if we need to. But I think our speed and ability to move the puck is probably our biggest strength as a group. YOU MENTIONED THE INJURIES. I DON’T KNOW HOW MUCH OF A FACTOR THAT’S BEEN IN YOU GUYS LEARNING THE SYSTEM, BUT DO YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE IN THE WAY THE COACHES WANT YOU TO PLAY OR IS THAT STILL A WORK IN PROGRESS? Yeah, I think it is. Until you get to that point where you’re really buckled down and you feel that you’re able to smother teams, whether it’s through the neutral zone or in the way we forecheck, I think with so many guys in and out it hasn’t been that easy to nail that stuff down. But it’s still a long season. Still a lot of time left and it’s still a process and you’ve got to continue to work on that stuff. DESPITE EVERYTHING YOU GUYS DEALT WITH IN THE FIRST HALF, YOU’RE STILL HIGH IN THE STANDINGS AND A LOT OF TEAM CATEGORIES. WHAT DOES THAT SAY ABOUT THIS GROUP? I think when you’re challenged like that, when you’re faced with adversity, you want to see how your team responds. We do have a lot of new faces, whether it be guys who came from Wilkes-Barre or guys just added to the team this year. So I think having to go through that and gel together and facing that stuff pretty early was a good test for us. Hopefully, it’s something that can help us further down the road.

AROUND THE NHL By: Mike Prisuta
KILLIN’ IT: The Blackhawks fashioned a 27-13-2 record through 42 games thanks in part to penalty-killing prowess that Chicago didn’t have to rely upon too often. The Blackhawks led the NHL in penalty killing at that juncture (89.0 percent), a pace that was approaching the New Jersey Devils’ NHL-record 89.6 percent success rate achieved in 2011-12. Chicago was averaging an NHL-low 7.7 penalty minutes per game through 42 games. The penalty-killing success was a factor in the Blackhawks allowing just 2.21 goals against per game, the second-best figure in the league.
WHAT’S MY LINE?: The Minnesota Wild used 31 lineups through 40 games. D Charlie Coyle, C Mikko Koivu, RW Nino Niederreiter, RW Jason Pominville and LW Thomas Vanek were the only Wild players to appear in each of Minnesota’s first 40 games.
ONE-GOAL WONDERS: The Anaheim Ducks rode a wave of one-goal
184
success to a mark of 26-9-6 through 41 games, the secondbest first half in franchise history (28-8-5 in 2013-14). Through 41 games Anaheim’s last 10 home victories had each been achieved in onegoal games, which tied an NHL record first set by Colorado in 2010-11 and matched by Nashville this season. The Ducks’ 12 straight overall wins in one-goal games from Oct. 28-Dec. 10 were the most in the NHL since Atlanta reeled off 14 in succession in 2010-11. Anaheim had the NHL’s best record in one-goal games through 41 games (20-0-6) and was the last team that hadn’t lost a one-goal game in regulation.
ROAD WARRIORS: Florida’s 19-11-9 record through 39 games was the second-best in franchise history (20-12-7 in 2011-12) and was fueled in part by success away from home. The Panthers went 6-3-1 over a 10-game road stretch and 10-6-6 overall while earning points in 16 of their first 22 games away from home.

UPCOMING DIAPER DRIVE SUNDAY, FEB. 1 VS. NASHVILLE PREDATORS
The Pittsburgh Penguins and Giant Eagle will team up on February 1 at CONSOL Energy Center for the team’s second annual Diaper Drive sponsored by Giant Eagle. All donations will benefit the Western Pennsylvania Diaper Bank. One in three families in America struggle to afford diapers for their children and not all social assistance programs for lowincome families cover the cost of diapers. Babies need between 6–10 diapers each day and an adequate supply of diapers can cost more than $100 each month per baby for families that are already struggling. Without a clean diaper available, some babies can spend a day or longer in one diaper, leading to potential health and abuse risks. continued on page 190

The Western Pennsylvania Diaper Bank helps to bridge the diaper gap — a lack of a sufficient supply of disposable diapers to ensure babies remain clean, dry and healthy — by providing diapers for babies of families who are most in need. On Sunday, February 1, the wives and girlfriends of Pittsburgh Penguins players and coaches will accept donations of diapers and cash before the Penguins face off against the Nashville Predators. Fans can make donations for the Pittsburgh Penguins Diaper Drive sponsored by Giant Eagle at the American Eagle gate, Trib Total Media gate and Verizon gate from the time gates open until the first period begins. Any fan who makes a donation will receive a PensPoints card and an opportunity to win autographed Penguins memorabilia! All donations will help the Western Pennsylvania Diaper Bank continue its mission to help babies and we encourage each fan to provide an assist for the youngest and most vulnerable members of our community — our children. RULES CHANGES nhl.com
RULE 1.8
RINK - GOALKEEPER’S RESTRICTED AREA The trapezoid will be expanded by two feet from the goal post on both sides of the net.
RULE 23
GAME MISCONDUCT PENALTIES A new Game Misconduct category will be created. Clipping, charging, elbowing, interference, kneeing, head-butting and butt-ending move from the general category into the same category as boarding and checking from behind (Physical Fouls), whereby a player who incurs two such game misconducts in this category would now be automatically suspended for one game.
RULE 24
PENALTY SHOT The Spin-O-Rama move, as described in Section 24.2 of the 2013-14 NHL Rule Book, will no longer be permitted either in Penalty Shot situations or in the Shootout.
RULE 38
VIDEO GOAL JUDGE Video review will be expanded in the following areas: * Rule 38.4 (viii) has been modified to allow broader discretion to Hockey Operations to assist the referees in determining the legitimacy of all potential goals (e.g., to ensure they are good hockey goals). The revised Rule will allow Hockey Operations to correct a broader array of situations where video review clearly establishes that a goal or no goal call on the ice has been made in error. The new expanded rule will also allow Hockey Operations to provide guidance to referees on goal and potential goal plays where the continued on page 198
197
continued from page 197
referee has blown his whistle (or intended to blow his whistle) after having lost sight of the puck. * In reviewing Kicked in Goals, Hockey Operations will require more demonstrable video evidence of a distinct kicking motion in order to overrule a goal call on the ice, or to uphold a no goal call on the ice.
RULE 57 TRIPPING
The rule relating to Tripping will be revised to specifically provide that a two minute minor penalty will be assessed when a defending player dives and trips an attacking player with his body/arm/shoulder, regardless of whether the defending player is able to make initial contact with the puck. But, in situations where a penalty shot might otherwise be appropriate, if the defending player dives and touches the puck first (before the trip), no penalty shot will be awarded. (In such cases, the resulting penalty will be limited to a two-minute minor penalty for tripping.)
RULE 76 FACE-OFFS
To curb delay tactics on face-offs after icing infractions, in situations where the defending team is guilty of a face-off violation, following an icing, the defending player who is initially lined up for the face-off will be given a warning, but will be required to remain in the circle to take the face-off. A second face-off violation by the defending team in such situation will result in a two minute minor bench penalty.
RULE 64
DIVING / EMBELLISHMENT The supplementary discipline penalties associated with Rule 64.3 (Diving/Embellishment) will be revised to bring attention to and more seriously penalize players (and teams) who repeatedly dive and embellish in an attempt to draw penalties. Fines will be assessed to players and head coaches on a graduated scale. continued on page 201

RULE 84 OVERTIME
* Teams will switch ends prior to the start of overtime in the regular season. * The entire ice surface will undergo a dry scrape prior to the start of overtime in the regular season. * The procedure requiring the head coach to submit a list of the first three shooters in the shoot-out has been eliminated.
RULE 85
PUCK OUT OF BOUNDS There have been further rule changes made relating to face-off location to avoid penalizing teams for plays intended to create bona fide scoring opportunities. Specifically, the following are categories of plays where face-offs will remain in the attacking zone despite the fact that the attacking team was technically responsible for the stoppage in play: Shots at the net by a player on the attacking team where: (i) the shot breaks the glass; (ii) the shot goes off the side of the net and deflects out of play; (iii) the shot goes off the dasher boards or glass and deflects out of play; (iv) the shot is tipped or deflected out of play by a teammate; and (v) the shot becomes wedged in or on the exterior of the goal net. In addition, the following rule change will be enacted for the 2014 preseason and may be continued for the 2014-15 regular season if approved by the League and the NHLPA.
RULE 1.9
RINK – FACE-OFF SPOTS AND CIRCLES – ICE MARKINGS/HASH MARKS The hash marks at the end zone circles will be moved from three feet apart to five feet, seven inches apart (international markings).
