The Series vs. Washington

The Penguins tonight begin a celebration of 50 years on the ice, and their fourth Stanley Cup championship, as the defending champs open the 2016-17 regular season at PPG Paints Arena against the rival Washington Capitals. Pittsburgh defeated the Capitals in six games in the Eastern Conference semifinals last spring, clinching the series here on May 10 with a 4-3 victory on Nick Bonino’s VS overtime goal at 6:32. That gave the Penguins eight victories in nine all-time playoff series against Washington. Pittsburgh defeated the Capitals on the way to each of its four Stanley Cups. . . Pittsburgh has never lost a season opener played against Washington (4-0-0), the most recent coming on Oct. 5, 1990 in Washington (7-4). That game marked the NHL debut of Jaromir Jagr and saw Kevin WSH Stevens set an NHL record for points in an opener (2+4) and linemate John Cullen tie the NHL mark for assists in an opener (5). Both records were standing at the start of this season. . . The continued on page 6

continued from page 5

Penguins also won season openers over Washington in 1988 (6-4), 1986 (5-4) and 1975 (4-2), with only the 1986 game coming here in Pittsburgh. . . At least one Pittsburgh player has recorded multiple goals in each of the last three season openers against the Capitals: Stevens and Mark Recchi in 1990 (2 each), Randy Cunneyworth in 1988 (2) and Cunneyworth again in 1986 (3). . . The Penguins went 3-2-0 against the Capitals last season, with Sidney Crosby (1+3) and Tom Kuhnhackl (1+3) sharing the series scoring lead for the Penguins while John Carlson (1+3) and Nicklas Backstrom (1+3) led the Capitals. Pittsburgh has won this series in four of the last five seasons. . . The teams were a combined 3-for-34 on the power play in their five regular season meetings last season, the Penguins going 1-for-18 (Justin Schultz). . . Pittsburgh has won only six of its last 17 regular season home games against the Capitals (6-9-2). . . Alexander Ovechkin has scored more goals against the Penguins (27) than any other active player. He has 46 career points against Pittsburgh, fewer than only Joe Thornton and Jason Spezza (47 each), Eric Staal (48) and Patrik Elias (70) among active players. . . Crosby is 19-36-55 in 38 career regular season games against Washington, while Evgeni Malkin is 11-34-45 in 32 career games against the Caps. . . These teams play next on Nov. 16 in Washington.

The Penguins are 22-20-6 all-time in season openers and had won four straight before falling in Dallas last Oct. 8 (0-3). They are 25-14-9 all-time in home openers, including a mark of 11-9-4 when that home opener also serves as the season opener. Pittsburgh has won just seven of its last 19 home openers. . . Goaltender Matt Murray was diagnosed in late September with a broken hand suffered in the World Cup of Hockey and was expected to miss three to six weeks. . . Marc-Andre Fleury has started 11 season openers, including 10 straight — both team records. The last opener to have someone else in the Pittsburgh goal was in 2005 (Jocelyn Thibault). Tom Barrasso started 10 openers for the Penguins. . . Pittsburgh plays six of its first eight games at home and will host Anaheim on Saturday and Colorado next Monday before playing in Montreal on Oct. 18. . . The Penguins are 142-83-5 with 16 ties (.619) all-time in the regular season as defending Cup champions, including 7-10-0 with one tie against the Capitals. . . The last two times the Penguins began a season as defending champs, they roared from the gate: 9-1-0 in their first 10 games in 2009-10 and 8-0-2 in their first 10 games in 1992-93. The only regulation loss in those 20 games came here against Phoenix (0-3) on Oct. 7, 2009. . . Excluding shortened seasons, this is the latest date for a season opener in Penguins’ history. The Penguins have opened on Oct. 12 three times (1977, 1973 and 1968). . . Crosby was named MVP of the World Cup after leading Team Canada to the championship in Toronto on Sept. 29. He had three goals and 10 points in six games. . . Bryan Rust was recovering from injury for most of the early portion of training camp. . . Tristan Jarry became just the second Penguins’ goaltender in 34 years to record a preseason shutout (Fleury, 2014) when he stopped 30 shots in a 2-0 win at Chicago on Sept. 28. Fleury followed with a 1-0 shutout of the Hawks here two days later. 8

STH SPOTLIGHT What is your favorite memory from the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoff run? “Game Six against Washington. It was the strangest sequence of events I think I’ve ever seen. Up 3-0 and positive we’d win, to the three consecutive delay-of-game penalties and being convinced we’d lose. Then Bones’ goal and the pure elation that came with it.” Joshua Weston, Pittsburgh, 1st Year as STH

MARIO LEMIEUX Co-Owner/Chairman

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in the National Hockey League, added a new line to his Hall of Fame career last season: Two-time champion owner. The Penguins claimed the Cup for the second time since Lemieux and partner Ron Burkle bought the team out of bankruptcy in 1999. It gave him four Stanley Cups overall, including two as a player in 1991 and 1992. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice – including 10 straight playoff appearances and four conference final appearances in the past nine seasons, in addition to the two Cups. The Penguins entered the 2016-17 season having sold out every game for nineplus seasons while setting new standards for television ratings, corporate sales and social media. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open the arena in August, 2010. The facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. The Penguins ownership group, local labor organizations and members of the Pittsburgh business community honored Lemieux in 2012 with a statue to commemorate his career and contributions to the city and the region. Appropriately named “Le Magnifique,” the statue, by nationally-acclaimed sculptor Bruce Wolfe, can be seen outside the arena. For full bio, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

RON BURKLE Co-Owner

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing, technology and distribution industries, is in his 18th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports, leading the team to Stanley Cup championships in 2009 and 2016. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. It is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh, including NCAA basketball and hockey. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for nine-plus seasons and consistently ranked among the most fan-friendly and community-minded teams in the NHL and all of pro sports. The Penguins have earned 10 straight playoff berths and reached the conference finals four times in the past nine years, in addition to the two Stanley Cups. The team’s solid foundation of ownership has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign many of the team’s core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Stanley Cupchampion Penguins, overseeing all aspects of the team’s operation. The Penguins have become one of the NHL’s strongest business entities during his tenure– selling out every game for nine-plus seasons, setting new standards for television ratings and corporate sales and increasing their focus on innovative youth marketing. Morehouse joined the team as consultant on the new arena project in 2004 and was named team president in April 2007. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer just as the new arena was opening in August 2010. JIM RUTHERFORD Executive Vice President & General Manager

Jim Rutherford enters his third year as Penguins executive vice president and general manager fresh off the greatest season of his managerial career. During the course of the 2015-16 campaign, Rutherford transformed the Penguins into Stanley Cup champions, thanks in large part to his acquisitions of Phil Kessel, Nick Bonino, Trevor Daley and Carl Hagelin, plus the promotion of Mike Sullivan to head coach in December of 2015. When the Penguins defeated the San Jose Sharks to win the franchise’s fourth Stanley Cup on June 12, 2016, Rutherford became the first GM in the post-1967 Expansion Era to manage multiple teams to Cup victories, having also done so with Carolina in 2006. As a reward for quick, on-the-fly re-shaping of the Penguins’ roster, Rutherford won the NHL General Manager of the Year Award for his work in ’15-16. Rutherford spent the previous 20 years as GM of the Carolina Hurricanes/ Hartford Whalers franchise from 1994-2014, where he was a key architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team. In addition to his general manager duties, he also served 20 years as president of Carolina/Hartford, taking the post in 1994. In his role as president/GM, Rutherford oversaw operations on both the hockey and business sides of the organization. Over the course of his executive career, Rutherford has won multiple awards, including The Hockey News‘ Executive of the Year in 2002 and ’06. Additionally, he was voted by his NHL general management peers as Sporting News ‘Executive of the Year’ in 2006. Before his 22 years in the NHL, Rutherford was recognized as the 1987 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Executive of the Year, and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Executive of the Year in back-to-back years with the Windsor Spitfires in 1987 and ’88. He oversaw a Spitfires team that won the OHL championship in 1988 and earned a berth in the Memorial Cup. Rutherford played 13 years as a goaltender in the NHL, appearing in 457 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit. He was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round (10th overall) of the 1969 NHL Draft. For full bio, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

JASON BOTTERILL Associate General Manager

Jason Botterill enters this third season as associate general manager having assisted GM Jim Rutherford in making numerous personnel moves over the last year that resulted in the Penguins winning the Stanley Cup in 2016, the second championship Botterill has helped build during his tenure in Pittsburgh. As associate GM, Botterill advises Rutherford on all hockey-related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. During the summer of 2015, Botterill played a leading role in hiring Mike Sullivan as head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League. Following a hot start to the season with WB/S, Sullivan was eventually promoted to Pittsburgh and helped guide the Penguins to the Stanley Cup victory. In addition to his duties in Pittsburgh, Botterill serves as the GM of WB/S, which has made the playoffs all seven years he has overseen the team, including back-to-back berths in the Eastern Conference Final in 2013 and ‘14. Prior to his promotion, Botterill spent the previous five years as the Penguins assistant GM from 2009-14, and the two years prior to that as the team’s director of hockey administration beginning in 2007-08 where he was a key architect of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team. Botterill was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the first round (20th overall) in 1994 NHL Draft and played in 88 NHL games for Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo before his career was cut short due to injury. He also suited up for 393 career minor-league games in the American and International Hockey Leagues, tallying 257 career points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four years of college hockey at the University of Michigan and helped lead the Wolverines to an NCAA title in 1996. Botterill represented Canada in three straight World Junior Championships from 1994-96, winning gold medals all three years. MIKE SULLIVAN Head Coach

Mike Sullivan led the Penguins to one of the greatest in-season turnarounds in franchise history during his first year as head coach in 2015-16, a journey that resulted in a Stanley Cup victory against the San Jose Sharks on June 12, 2016. Adhering to Sullivan’s advice to ‘Just Play’, the Penguins ended the regular season with the secondbest record in the Eastern Conference and fourth-best mark in the league, in large part because of a 14-2 run to conclude the regular season. By leading the Penguins to the franchise’s fourth Cup, Sullivan became just the sixth American-born head coach to win the Stanley Cup. Prior to being promoted to Pittsburgh, Sullivan spent the first two-plus months of the 2015-16 season as the head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins. During his 23-game tenure in WB/S, his club went 18-5, which was good enough for first place in the Atlantic Division. Sullivan’s club also had a franchise-best 11-game winning streak. A native of Marshfield, Massachusetts, Sullivan began his coaching career in 2002-03, starting the season as head coach of the AHL’s Providence Bruins before joining the NHL’s Bruins as an assistant coach late in the year. He was promoted to head coach of the NHL Bruins at age 35 in 2003-04, winning a Northeast Division crown in the first of his two years at the helm. Sullivan served as an NHL assistant coach for seven-consecutive years from 2007-14 with Tampa Bay, the NY Rangers and Vancouver. In addition to his professional coaching experience, Sullivan has coached the United States three times internationally, including the 2016 World Cup of Hockey when he was an assistant coach. He was the head coach at the 2007 World Championship and an assistant coach at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turino, Italy. During the 2014-15 season, Sullivan was a member of the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks player development staff. Sullivan’s 11-year NHL career began with the expansion San Jose Sharks in 1991-92 and included stops in Calgary, Boston and Arizona. Sullivan played four years of collegiate hockey at Boston University from 1986-90, serving as the Terriers captain as a senior. Sullivan represented the U.S. as a player at the 1988 World Junior Championship. For full bio, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

RICK TOCCHET Assistant Coach

Rick Tocchet is in his third season as an assistant coach of the Penguins. In his current role, Tocchet works closely with the team’s speedy and dynamic forward group, which had eight players reach double figures in points during the 2016 playoffs, a key reason Pittsburgh was able to win the franchise’s fourth Stanley Cup, the first Cup win of Tocchet’s coaching career. Tocchet was hired as an assistant coach by Tampa Bay in July, 2008 and was elevated to interim head coach on Nov. 14 of that year. He was named head coach following the ‘08-09 season, where he remained in that position until 2010. Tocchet began his coaching career as an assistant with the Colorado Avalanche for two years (2002-04) before spending one season (‘05-06) with the Phoenix Coyotes. A veteran of 18 NHL seasons, including parts of three seasons with the Penguins from 1992-94, Tocchet won a Stanley Cup championship with Pittsburgh in 1992. The four-time NHL All-Star (1989, ‘90, ‘91, ‘93) played 1,144 career NHL games and totaled 440 goals, 952 points and 2,972 penalty minutes in his NHL career. Tocchet was originally drafted by Philadelphia in the sixth round (125th overall) of the 1983 NHL Draft.

JACQUES MARTIN Assistant Coach

Jacques Martin stepped back behind the Penguins’ bench for a second tour of duty as an assistant coach in December 2015, playing a crucial role in the team’s Stanley Cup win, the first championship of Martin’s lengthy NHL career. Martin, who enters his fourth season in the Pittsburgh organization, presides over the Penguins’ defensemen and penalty killing unit in his current role. He was instrumental in Kris Letang hitting career highs in all offensive categories in 2015-16. Martin’s PK unit finished with the fifth-best success rate in the NHL. Martin has over 25 years of NHL experience as a general manager, head coach and assistant coach with Pittsburgh, Montreal, Florida, Ottawa, Colorado/Quebec, Chicago and St. Louis. He won 613 games and made 12 playoff appearances in 17 seasons as an NHL head coach. He won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s ‘most outstanding coach’ with Ottawa in 1999 and was a finalist for the award on three other occasions. Martin won gold medals as an assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2002 Olympics and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. He was also an assistant coach on the 2006 Canadian Olympic Team.

MIKE BALES Goaltending Coach Mike Bales has established himself as one of the NHL’s top goaltending coaches during his first three seasons with the team. During the Penguins’ 2016 Stanley Cup championship drive, Pittsburgh used three goaltenders who thrived under his tutelage, including rookie Matt Murray, whose 15 playoff wins equaled the NHL rookie record. Under Bales’ guidance, Marc-Andre Fleury has compiled two of the finest seasons of his career. During the 2014-15 campaign, Fleury established a franchise record with 10 shutouts, a figure that led the entire NHL. Bales began his Penguins’ career as the team’s goaltending development coach from 2011-13. Bales, a native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, spent 18 seasons playing professionally from 1992-2010, including stints in the NHL with Boston and Ottawa. 2016: ‘THE YEAR OF SID’

© Getty Images

Jason Seidling

Penguins fans will always remember 2016 as the year the franchise added a fourth Stanley Cup to its arsenal. But 2016 was important for another reason — the return of Sidney Crosby to his standing as the undisputed best player in the game. To be fair, that’s not a title that Crosby ever really relinquished. Anyone who felt otherwise was really just judging him against the impossible standards Crosby had set during his first decade in the league. Crosby’s renaissance coincided with the hiring of Mike Sullivan last December. From that point to the end of the regular season, no NHL player tallied more points than Crosby’s 66, and only Washington’s Alex Ovechkin (36 goals) scored more goals than Crosby (30 goals). During the Stanley Cup playoffs, Crosby fulfilled his legacy by willing his club to a second championship. He did so with an all-around excellence that resulted in him claiming the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. Crosby was at his best during Pittsburgh’s decisive Game Six victory on June 12 in San Jose, setting up Kris Letang’s Cup-clinching goal in the second period, before making a key block in the waning seconds to sniff out any chance the Sharks had to come back. In between those plays, he was simply the best player on the ice. continued on page 66

But his work wasn’t done that magical night in San Jose. Last month, Crosby added to his already Hall of Fame worthy resume by captaining Team Canada to a World Cup of Hockey championship. During the three-week tournament, Crosby might have reached a level even higher than where he performed during the second half of last season. When all was said and done, Crosby took home tournament MVP honors after leading all players in assists (7), points (10) and plus/minus (+8). Amazingly, those gaudy numbers don’t tell half the story of just how dominant he was. “I don’t think much about that company, I just think about serial winners, and that’s what he is, he just wins,” Team Canada coach Mike Babcock told a group of reporters, which included NHL.com’s Dan Rosen, not long after Canada’s win. “Sid’s unbelievable. He’s great to be around. I’ve been real lucky, I’ve been around him now three times and we win every time.” By taking home tournament MVP honors, Crosby joined all-time greats Bobby Orr and Wayne Gretzky as the only players to be named MVP of the NHL regular season, NHL playoffs and the Canada/World Cup. The best news for Penguins fans is you get the feeling that Crosby is just warming up. When the puck drops tonight on the 2016-17 regular season, it will do so with Crosby needing just 62 points to reach the 1,000-point plateau. Only two players, franchise icon Mario Lemieux and two-time Stanley Cup champion Jaromir Jagr, have compiled 1,000 points entirely as Penguins. The level Crosby is playing right now, it won’t surprise anyone if he reaches that milestone before the calendar flips to 2017.

USHL Fall Classic Kicks-Off

HISTORIC 50TH PENGUINS SEASON

Ryan Vilella and Spencer Nicol The USHL Fall Classic tournament was held at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex over the Sept. 16-18 weekend. A total of 10 USHL teams, including the U18 Team USA, and over 200 junior players participated in the opening event of the season. In addition 16 of the top Bantam Major 2002 teams in the country played in front of USHL scouts for the first time. The USHL is the top league within the United States that allows junior players to gain more knowledge and playing experience as they advance towards a professional or collegiate career. The USHL has earned this spot as a result of producing the most NHL draftees in 2016 of any other junior league. This tournament gives all players, including those from the Penguins Elite, a great opportunity to learn what it takes to take your game to the next level. Many current NHL players have graduated from the USHL to play professionally, including: Jack Eichel, Joe Pavelski, Max Pacioretty, and Johnny Gaudreau. The 2002 bantams that participated in the weekend are eligible to be tenured by USHL teams in the next couple of years. This year is crucial in a player’s development, as many scouts and colleges begin to recruit and watch these 14 year old players all season long. With the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite playing host, great young Pittsburgh talent was on display. The tournament had over 200 scouts in attendance ranging from NHL, junior, and college, placing these youngsters in the perfect position, in the perfect city, to advance their careers. As shown by that weekend, the hockey community in Pittsburgh continues to evolve and produce talented players. With a state of the art facility, the Penguins look to lead the charge in creating the strongest hockey community Western Pennsylvania has ever seen. 70

Defenseman Olli Maatta had an atypical reaction when time expired at the end of Game Six at San Jose and the Penguins had won the Stanley Cup. “It was pretty empty,” Maatta said. “It was so much fun playing those games, and just living in that moment. You’re playing in the Stanley Cup playoffs, and playing in the Stanley Cup Final – and it’s just over. “It’s an empty feeling. You’ve accomplished what you wanted, but you don’t really realize what you’ve done.” If things haven’t truly sunk in with Maatta by now, no matter – it’s time to begin the pursuit again. Since October of 2014, Maatta has been plagued by thyroid cancer, two shoulder surgeries and the mumps. He played just 20 games in 2014-15, but bounced back to skate in 67 regular-season contests last season, followed by 18 playoff tilts. Maatta, 22, had six goals and 13 assists and was plus-27 during the regular season, adding seven assists and a plus-5 mark during the postseason. “It’s a hard grind,” said Maatta, reflecting on the playoffs. “Everyone who’s been there knows it. It takes a lot from you, and a lot from the team. But now we know that, and we’re ready for it, and we’re even more dangerous than we were last year. “You put in 100 percent every game. There are no games off. It’s so hard to win in the playoffs. You put your body on the line. You block shots. You take hits. You give hits. That’s what playoff hockey is.” Maatta prepared for the season with [finally] a healthy summer of training and a regular shift for Finland in the World Cup of Hockey at Toronto. continued on page 79

Finland was a disappointing 0-3, scoring just once. But the experience helped Maatta. “We weren’t on the same page, and that showed,” Maatta said. “We couldn’t score a goal. It wasn’t a good tournament for us. We’re all disappointed, but it’s behind us. We’re all looking forward to the NHL season. “For sure [I’m more ready]. You get six pretty hard games [including three pre-tournament games]. They’re fast-paced, and I think it really helps. But at the same time, it’s a short summer. It’s challenging when you have to be ready and in top shape so early. But I think it gives you a bit of an advantage.” Maatta wants to improve his “skating, for sure. The game is a lot of skating and speed now. If I want to be a better player, that’s one thing I can get better at.” Just keeping up with his defense partner would be a good start in that regard. Maatta is often paired with lightning-fast Kris Letang. “[Letang] is an elite defenseman in this league,” Maatta said. “I don’t think he gets enough credit for his defensive play. “He wants to be up in the play. He’s really active offensively. But he’s really good defensively, too. He’s reliable. So you try to build up chemistry. Just make sure you’re there for him, because he’s going to be there for you.” Penguins coach Mike Sullivan is optimistic that Maatta will keep improving. “He played top-four minutes most of [last] year for us as a 21-year-old. I think that speaks volumes for how the coaching staff feels about him as a player and a person,” Sullivan said. “He’s got great hockey sense. He’s very competitive. “But we believe Olli has a great opportunity to grow to another level as well. We’re constantly striving to get better, and as young as Olli is, we think his game can get to another level.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

Pittsburgh chose Bathgate in the 1967 Expansion Draft, and the Winnipeg native suited up for the Penguins’ first NHL game on Oct. 11, 1967 at the Civic Arena versus Montreal. The future Hall of Famer had the distinction of scoring the first goal in franchise history, coming against netminder Rogie Vachon, in front of a crowd of 9,307. Bathgate went on to record 59 points (20G-39A) in 74 games during the franchise’s inaugural season. He later returned to the Penguins for the 1970-71 campaign, which would be the last of his storied 17-season NHL career. 89

Guerin arrived in Pittsburgh at the trade deadline in March 2009, using his experience and leadership to help lead the Penguins to the franchise’s third Stanley Cup just 14 weeks later. He made such an impact that Sidney Crosby handed him the trophy first. During that run, the Massachusetts native recorded the game-winning goal in overtime against Philadelphia in Game Two of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals at Mellon Arena. Guerin retired as a Penguin in December 2010 after 18 seasons in the NHL. After his playing days, he joined the Penguins as a player development coach from 2011-14 before getting promoted to his current position of assistant general manager.

Two iconic brands.

ONE INCREDIBLE HOME.

Sam Kasan The home of the Pittsburgh Penguins, formerly known as CONSOL Energy Center since the facilities inception in 2010, will now be known as PPG Paints Arena. “It’s exciting to be the first to be able to say welcome to the PPG Paints Arena,” Penguins president and CEO David Morehouse said. “We’re very excited to announce this partnership with PPG. “PPG is a part of Pittsburgh’s history. It’s ingrained in the fabric of Pittsburgh. With this arena it will allow them to protect and beautify the world.” PPG, which is also the official paint supplier of the Penguins, signed a 20-year agreement with the team for the naming rights to the multipurpose arena, which was the key structure in keeping the Penguins in Pittsburgh in perpetuity. “We’re very proud of this day,” PPG vice president of corporate and government affairs Brian Iams said. “It’s always a great day for hockey, and it’s a great day for PPG.” Various companies approached the Penguins with an interest in the building naming rights, in case an opportunity were ever to present itself. But PPG took things to the next level. After PPG made a strong offer, the team approached CONSOL Energy, whose business priorities were changing. continued on page 95

“Between the three of us we were able to put this deal together,” Morehouse said. “It’s truly a great collaborative effort between our staff, PPG staff and CONSOL Energy staff to pull this together.” PPG Paints will not only have its name across the building’s spine, but it will appear all throughout — fan entrances, roof, signage, center ice, dasher boards, etc. PPG will also have a presence in the team’s UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry. PPG had already worked with the Penguins upon the construction of the arena, providing the paint throughout the building. “We’ve helped the Pittsburgh Penguins protect and beautify this building since the arena opened in 2010,” PPG executive vice president Viktor Sekmakas said. “We consulted the Penguins as they chose paint colors used throughout the arena when it was being designed. Our coatings and products protect the building’s structural steel from rust and ultraviolet exposure.” PPG Paints Arena was the first NHL building to earn an LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, thanks in part to PPG. PPG, which has been in operation for more than 130 years, is headquartered in Pittsburgh with reach to over 70 countries around the world. “It’s a company that we want to be partners with,” Morehouse said. “It’s a long-time Pittsburgh company from the 1880s. We’re happy to partner with an iconic brand like PPG.” While CONSOL Energy will no longer own the naming rights to the arena, the company and team still have a strong partnership for the next 14 years. “We knew from our close relationship with CONSOL Energy that their business priorities were changing,” Morehouse said. “We talked to them about transitioning some of the things we were doing for them to be more community and employee-engagement oriented. “We want to thank CONSOL Energy, who’s been a great partner of ours. CONSOL Energy has been with us for about eight years, for the last six as the naming right’s partner of this building. They helped us build this building. Without a relationship with CONSOL Energy it would have been difficult to have the revenues we needed to generate in order to have this new arena built.” 95

In 2015, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and the Allegheny Intermediate Unit introduced the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation (PFF) STEAM Lending Library to schools districts in Allegheny County. This oneof-a-kind, first in the nation, program has given students the opportunity to explore technology that they may have never had access to otherwise. Stressing the importance of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math) learning in the region, the Library gives teachers the opportunity to borrow technology to use in their classrooms. The PPF STEAM Lending Library contains nearly 1,000 items, and to date, has impacted educators from 40 schools districts in Allegheny County.

Entering its third year, Tablets in Education has provided elementary students in 11 counties the opportunity to enhance their education through technology. Since its inception in 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation has donated over 3,900 Kindle Fire tablets to over 200 school districts and special needs programs in the region; impacting over 100,000 students. Along with the support from the Allegheny Intermediate Unit, Tablets in Education continues to change the way students in our region learn. MIKE LANGE Penguins Radio Network Play-by-Play Announcer

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 42nd season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

PHIL BOURQUE Penguins Radio Network Color Analyst

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 14th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey. 111

JOSH GETZOFF Radio Broadcast Host and PensTV Host

Josh Getzoff is in his second season as a radio broadcast host and PensTV host with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He joins the Penguins after spending the previous two years as the sports director for FOX Champaign in Champaign, Illinois. While in Champaign, Getzoff covered the University of Illinois and Big Ten athletics, local high school athletics, and various professional teams in the region. In June of 2015, he was named the Television Sportscaster of the Year by the Illinois Broadcasters Association. In addition to his time in Illinois, Getzoff has also worked as a sports anchor/reporter at WENY-TV and radio update anchor at 1410 WELM ESPN Radio in Elmira, New York, and served as a member of the on-site production team during NBC’s coverage of Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia. He is a graduate of Ithaca College’s Roy H. Park School of Communications in Ithaca, New York.

HOCKEY ETIQUETTE 101 Our goal? To create an awesome game experience for all fans! Help make that happen by remembering the following: 1.

DO NOT ENTER OR EXIT THE SEATING AREA DURING PLAY! Hockey is fast — and goals can be missed in an instant. Fans moving through rows and up aisles can block the view of an entire seating area. Wait until the whistle blows to make your move. HINT #1: The red light above the penalty boxes is lit for TV timeouts. TV timeouts occur at the first whistle stops inside the 14:00, 10:00, and 6:00 minute mark of each period, EXCEPT following an icing call or goal. When the light comes on, this is your chance to make a dash to the restroom or your seats! HINT #2: The concourse TVs feature a countdown clock during the intermissions. Smart, huh? Thank the season ticket holders for recommending this awesome idea!

118

2.

NO LEANING! We know you are into the game, but leaning creates a ripple effect, affecting the view of the fans in the rows behind you. Sit back so all can enjoy the game!

3.

Keep your eyes on the puck! Pucks can hurt when they enter the seating area!

4.

The arena is a non-smoking facility; smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, is prohibited.

5.

It’s hard to like fans of the opposing team, we get it. However, we think it is pretty cool that they chose to come to our building. Be aware of children sitting around you and let the guys on the ice do the talking!

6.

Cheer, clap and let the players know you are here! Hockey is the best sport to watch live — have fun!

Since 2012, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered to build a total of 12 dek hockey rinks for local communities through their unique Project Power Play program. Project Power Play is a $2.3 million initiative that was designed to build one dozen dek rinks in Pittsburgh and the surrounding communities over a four-year period. To support the program, Highmark provided $1.5 million in funding. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation also provided funding for the project. The City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and surrounding communities provided the land as well as maintenance services, lighting and additional support. The rinks are multi-purpose courts and are suitable for hockey and other sports; including, soccer and lacrosse. All rink sites were chosen based on a community’s need for this type of facility and a local commitment to develop youth programming. Citiparks and local athletic associations continue to program the rinks, with the assistance from the Penguins organization.

Embracing the

CHALLENGE

Mike Prisuta The raising of the banner and the dropping of the puck against Washington commence for the Penguins the quest to accomplish something that might be even tougher to achieve than what they managed last season. Win the Stanley Cup again. There hasn’t been a repeat champion in the NHL since the Detroit Red Wings in 1996-97 and 1997-98. The Penguins are one of 10 teams that has unsuccessfully defended a title since (Tampa Bay didn’t get a chance to since there was no season in 2004-05). Dallas, Colorado, Carolina, Anaheim and Boston are also in that group. New Jersey (two times), Detroit (two times), Los Angeles (two times) and Chicago (three times) have failed with multiple opportunities to repeat. “History just says it’s tough to do,” acknowledged Penguins center Matt Cullen. That said, the Penguins intend to approach and attack the task enthusiastically. And to Cullen that would constitute a significant first step. “You have to be hungry to go after it right away because you enter the season with a target on your back,” he said. “We have to improve if we expect to win it [again]. In this

league you can’t ever sit back and feel like you’re good enough because the league passes you by pretty quick. I think we have a group that kind of understands that and is motivated to get back to where we were. “It’s so hard to win in our league, there are so many good teams. Obviously, we really like our group and we’re pretty fortunate we have almost the entire group back. You come off playing a lot of hockey, it’s a challenge to kind of refresh and get your body back to where it needs to be and maybe more importantly get your mind back where it needs to be. I think we have a pretty good group, we have a lot of leaders in our group. I think it’s a challenge we’re looking forward to.” Assistant coach Rick Tocchet, likewise, envisions the Penguins as potentially being better than they were in the second half of last season and in the postseason. But at the outset of this season, at least, Tocchet maintains the focus should be on performance rather than results. “We played at a pretty high level in the playoffs,” he said. “Every series, I thought, and obviously I’m biased, but we were in control in a lot of the series. This team, does it have another level? Sure. “I’m sure there are certain guys that think they can have a better year, and there’s certain guys, they hope they have the same year. If you have that, the team should be pretty explosive. “But it’s so far down the road, that stuff. You just try to get better every day. I know it’s a cliche but that’s kind of the way we, our mantra last year, just shut up and play.” continued on page 151

149

continued from page 149

It’s a challenge that’s being embraced by the coaches as well as the players. “A lot of it is your mindset and your attitude going to the rink every day and making sure that we create the right environment for these guys to continue to inspire them,” head coach Mike Sullivan said. “I think we’re very fortunate, we’ve really got a quality dressing room, we believe that. I think our coaching staff works hard to keep things fresh, to challenge these players in different ways. “I’ve always been a believer that there’s a fine line between repetition and monotony. As a coaching staff that’s one of the challenges we’re faced with in an NHL schedule. Repetition is really important for us as far as creating instinctive habits but monotony is not a good thing. Because when that sets in, that, I think, is when the game becomes work. We work hard as a coaching staff to try to introduce fresh drills, different ideas or concepts, how we use our video, so were on the right side of that line where we’re getting the right repetitions but we’re not falling into the monotony stage.” That’s one of the stages that can trip a team up on the way to a second consecutive Cup. “Yeah, it’s tough,” defenseman Ian Cole allowed. “It’s a really short summer, not a lot of time to get back in shape. There are quite a few factors in making it so tough. “I think everyone on this team is excited about the opportunity, for sure.”

SUMMER STICKS

Kicks-Off the 2016-17 Season

On September 20, the Penguins organization welcomed in a new hockey season by hosting its 29th Annual Summer Sticks Golf Classic presented by UPMC at Allegheny Country Club. The event funds the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation’s scholarship programs. With the tournament’s overwhelming success and the strong support of UPMC, Foundation scholarships have increased to a record 44 awarded over the past two seasons. continued on page 163

A Penguins tradition for decades, the scramble-style tournament featured the players, coaches and team management enjoying a day of golf while raising valuable funds for the scholarship program. Twenty-one students from Pittsburgh Public Schools and Allegheny County were awarded 2016 scholarships and honored at a luncheon at the PPG Paints Arena before they continued their individual career paths as college freshmen this fall.

PENGUINS IN THE CLASSROOM …

TEACHING STEAM!

Chartiers Valley Middle School

Chartiers Valley Middle School’s STEAM classroom kicked off the school year with the Penguin’s Future Goals — Hockey Scholar program for a unit on how math intersects with the real world. Students greatly enjoyed the interactive simulations and game-like environment in which these lessons are taught. One student said, “I enjoy math. I enjoy hockey. It’s nice to see them used together in real life!” Many of the students are avid Penguins fans and this program has built off of that passion to make learning fun. Teachers enjoy the fact that lessons can be self-paced, allowing students who are advanced to go at a faster pace and students who need more time to move without being rushed. The review exams at the end of each section also give students immediate feedback on their learning progress. “I love how Future Goals makes real life connections to show us how math is used in real life settings all over the world,” said another STEAM class student. Hockey Scholar is a digital resource that provides students an opportunity to experience different aspects of hockey while immersing themselves in problem solving situations involving engineering, math and science. If you’re a 5th-8th grade teacher, learn how to bring Future Goals to your classroom by visiting futuregoals.nhl.com/penguins!

MAATTA LOOKING TO GROW HIS GAME Bryanna McDermott When six-year-old Olli Maatta finally convinced his parents to sign him up for a hockey team, he had no idea the career he had ahead of him. Maatta is a winner of two Ontario Hockey League championships, was a first-round NHL draft pick, an Olympic Bronze medalist and, most importantly of all, a Stanley Cup champion. Now just 22 years old, he has beaten cancer, underwent two shoulder surgeries and battled past concussions. But the Finnish defenseman is looking to do more. Last season Maatta tied Trevor Daley for second among Penguins defensemen in goals with six and ranked third among NHL D-men with a plus-27 in just 67 games. He even had seven assists in 18 games during the 2015-16 playoffs, but Maatta is still trying to improve. “Every season you want to get better,” Maatta said. “I want to play big minutes for this team, but it’s not easy when there’s so many good defensemen. Every time you’re out there, you have to prove you can play those big minutes. If you don’t, there’s always someone out there who’s going to take your minutes.” While Maatta may have had an impressive season on the stat sheet, he feels that he could have done better — especially considering he was a healthy scratch for the first three games of the Eastern Conference Final against Tampa Bay. “I don’t think it was a good season at all if it didn’t end the way it did,” Maatta said. “I think the ending is what we wanted, but personally I never really felt that great the whole season and I know I can play a lot better.” In the second round of the playoffs, Maatta was the victim of a late hit by former Penguin Brooks Orpik. The play led to a three-game suspension for the Washington defenseman and an injury for Maatta that kept him out for the same time. The injury slowed him down physically, and it wasn’t until Game Five against the Lightning that Maatta truly felt he tapped into his potential. “I think at the end of the last few games when I got back into the lineup, I felt great,” Maatta said. “That’s the hockey I can play, that’s the hockey I know. I know how good I am, and I need to bring it there every day.” In addition to that, Maatta wants to work on skating and boost his foot speed, something he feels he lacked last season. 172

“I think nowadays the game is focused on speed and skating and that’s a big part of the way we want to play too,” Maatta said. “If I want to get better, that’s one of the biggest things I can improve. If I can get better at that, it’s going to help my game a lot.” The Finland native took a month and a half off after winning the Cup to rest after a rigorous season, but then hit the ice in August with a skating coach back home. “It’s a lot about power and muscle strength in your legs and at the same time it’s a lot of technique,” Maatta said. “There’s a lot of things that go into it. The biggest is probably technique. If you have the technique you can improve your power and foot speed and can take your skating to the next level.” Just because Maatta considered the 2015-16 season a disappointment personally, doesn’t mean winning the Stanley Cup wasn’t an incredible experience. “That’s what you dream about when you’re a kid,” Maatta said. “There’s not a lot of players that have done it, you’re in an elite group now. Nobody can take it away from you. It’s a pretty remarkable thing we accomplished as a team.” Heading into the 2016-17 season, Maatta is looking forward to a bounce-back year thanks to both his training and a newfound confidence. Maatta was one of six Penguins players to compete at the World Cup in September, representing his native Finland. And despite his country’s early exit, the experience gave Maatta some reassurance. “You want to get those big games and it’s a boost of confidence,” Maatta said. “I know I can play hockey; I know I can be good. I can be a big part of this team.” Head coach Mike Sullivan also believes that Maatta can continue playing an essential role for the Penguins as he strives to get better. “He played top-four minutes most of the year for us as a 21-year old,” Sullivan said of Maatta. “I think that speaks volumes for how this coaching staff feels about him as a player and a person. He’s got great hockey sense, he’s very competitive, but we believe that Olli has a great opportunity to grow his game to another level as well.” 175
