SPOTLIGHT

What is your earliest memory of Penguins hockey? “Winning the Cup in 1991. I was a sophomore in college and came home from school in mid-May and the town was in full playoff mode. It was so much fun! We would sneak into bars to party and watch the games (but don’t tell my dad)!” Anne Zacharias, Pittsburgh, 5 Years as STH

“Participating in an intermission shootout when I was 11 years old. I got to meet Pierre Mike Gedeon and his daughter, Katie Larouche in the hallway by the locker room as I was putting on my goalie equipment.” Mike Gedeon, Pittsburgh, 20 Years as STH

“Attendng my first game at the Civic Arena in 1967 vs. the Oakland Seals with my dad. I was hooked for life. I also remember listening to Jim Forney, Mike Lange and Terry Shiffaur on radio broadcasts and watching Sam Nover on Channel 11 during televised games.” Dean Ponterio, Pittsburgh, 10 Years as STH

“Waking up each morning asking my mom about the Penguins game the night before. I was probably three or four years old and only allowed to watch the first period.” Mike Clark, Pittsburgh, 2 Years as STH

“I believe it was in 1987 or 1988 when I was flipping through the radio dial and heard Mike Lange describing a game. My mom told me it was like the indoor Spirit soccer game, but on ice. A few days later, a game was on TV. I watched it and was hooked for life!” Jennifer Bordone, Pittsburgh, 26 Years as STH continued on page 15

“Game Seven in 1993 vs. the New York Islanders. This was my first game to see and it was a heartbreaker. We were down 3-1 late in the game, when Ronnie Francis and Rick Tocchet scored to send it to overtime. It felt like nothing could go wrong and we would win for sure. Unfortunately, David Volek had other plans for us.” David Dillman, New Alexandria, 12 Years as STH

“When my dad was stationed in Hawthorne, Nevada from 1970-73, I would listen to weak AM radio broadcasts of the California Golden Seals when the Penguins played them. The signal would fade in and out, but I enjoyed trying to follow and learn the game. I was curious about hockey, and was helped by Peter Puck to learn the nuts and bolts of the game. I couldn’t wait for the time I would get to see the Penguins in person.” Robert Sullivan, Lower Burrell, 1st Year as STH

“My husband and I were at the game in 1979 when the Penguins first went to black and gold uniforms. It was our third or fourth date! But…the 1989 playoffs and Mario’s performance against the Flyers is what really got me interested!” Michael and Arlene Losak

During all Penguins home games, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation hosts a 50/50 RAFFLE. From the raffle, one lucky winner goes home with 50 percent of that night’s collection. The remainder of the proceeds are distributed to local 501c3 charities through a grant process.

During the 2015.16 Penguins season, the Foundation was able to help more local charities than ever before!

TICKET PRICES 3 FOR $5 10 FOR $10 40 FOR $20

n $1.2 million donated back into the community n Over 100 local 501c3 organizations received grants n The highest pot of the season topped $135,065 Help us have another record breaking year! Find a mobile seller in green aprons on the concourse or stop by one of the seven 50/50 kiosks for your chance to win BIG! MARIO LEMIEUX Co-Owner/Chairman

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in the National Hockey League, added a new line to his Hall of Fame career last season: Two-time champion owner. The Penguins claimed the Cup for the second time since Lemieux and partner Ron Burkle bought the team out of bankruptcy in 1999. It gave him four Stanley Cups overall, including two as a player in 1991 and 1992. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice – including 10 straight playoff appearances and four conference final appearances in the past nine seasons, in addition to the two Cups. The Penguins entered the 2016-17 season having sold out every game for nineplus seasons while setting new standards for television ratings, corporate sales and social media. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open the arena in August, 2010. The facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. The Penguins ownership group, local labor organizations and members of the Pittsburgh business community honored Lemieux in 2012 with a statue to commemorate his career and contributions to the city and the region. Appropriately named “Le Magnifique,” the statue, by nationally-acclaimed sculptor Bruce Wolfe, can be seen outside the arena. For full bio, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

RON BURKLE Co-Owner

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing, technology and distribution industries, is in his 18th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports, leading the team to Stanley Cup championships in 2009 and 2016. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. It is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh, including NCAA basketball and hockey. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for nine-plus seasons and consistently ranked among the most fan-friendly and community-minded teams in the NHL and all of pro sports. The Penguins have earned 10 straight playoff berths and reached the conference finals four times in the past nine years, in addition to the two Stanley Cups. The team’s solid foundation of ownership has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign many of the team’s core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award. DAVID MOREHOUSE Chief Executive Officer & President

David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Stanley Cupchampion Penguins, overseeing all aspects of the team’s operation. The Penguins have become one of the NHL’s strongest business entities during his tenure– selling out every game for nine-plus seasons, setting new standards for television ratings and corporate sales and increasing their focus on innovative youth marketing. Morehouse joined the team as consultant on the new arena project in 2004 and was named team president in April 2007. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer just as the new arena was opening in August 2010. Under his leadership, the Penguins have reshaped their strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, community interaction, corporate outreach and cutting-edge technology, while maintaining a high level of performance on the ice. A strong commitment to fan outreach includes an annual event where players personally deliver season tickets to fans’ homes and a special preseason game were all 18,000 tickets are distributed free to local youth. Morehouse also was a driving force behind the new UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, which opened in August 2015. It is the first facility to combine hockey with a world-class medical center and sports performance complex. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. JIM RUTHERFORD Executive Vice President & General Manager

Jim Rutherford enters his third year as Penguins executive vice president and general manager fresh off the greatest season of his managerial career. During the course of the 2015-16 campaign, Rutherford transformed the Penguins into Stanley Cup champions, thanks in large part to his acquisitions of Phil Kessel, Nick Bonino, Trevor Daley and Carl Hagelin, plus the promotion of Mike Sullivan to head coach in December of 2015. When the Penguins defeated the San Jose Sharks to win the franchise’s fourth Stanley Cup on June 12, 2016, Rutherford became the first GM in the post-1967 Expansion Era to manage multiple teams to Cup victories, having also done so with Carolina in 2006. As a reward for quick, on-the-fly re-shaping of the Penguins’ roster, Rutherford won the NHL General Manager of the Year Award for his work in ’15-16. Rutherford spent the previous 20 years as GM of the Carolina Hurricanes/ Hartford Whalers franchise from 1994-2014, where he was a key architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team. In addition to his general manager duties, he also served 20 years as president of Carolina/Hartford, taking the post in 1994. In his role as president/GM, Rutherford oversaw operations on both the hockey and business sides of the organization. Over the course of his executive career, Rutherford has won multiple awards, including The Hockey News‘ Executive of the Year in 2002 and ’06. Additionally, he was voted by his NHL general management peers as Sporting News ‘Executive of the Year’ in 2006. Before his 22 years in the NHL, Rutherford was recognized as the 1987 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Executive of the Year, and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Executive of the Year in back-to-back years with the Windsor Spitfires in 1987 and ’88. He oversaw a Spitfires team that won the OHL championship in 1988 and earned a berth in the Memorial Cup. Rutherford played 13 years as a goaltender in the NHL, appearing in 457 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit. He was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round (10th overall) of the 1969 NHL Draft. For full bio, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

JASON BOTTERILL Associate General Manager

Jason Botterill enters this third season as associate general manager having assisted GM Jim Rutherford in making numerous personnel moves over the last year that resulted in the Penguins winning the Stanley Cup in 2016, the second championship Botterill has helped build during his tenure in Pittsburgh. As associate GM, Botterill advises Rutherford on all hockey-related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. During the summer of 2015, Botterill played a leading role in hiring Mike Sullivan as head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League. Following a hot start to the season with WB/S, Sullivan was eventually promoted to Pittsburgh and helped guide the Penguins to the Stanley Cup victory. In addition to his duties in Pittsburgh, Botterill serves as the GM of WB/S, which has made the playoffs all seven years he has overseen the team, including back-to-back berths in the Eastern Conference Final in 2013 and ‘14. Prior to his promotion, Botterill spent the previous five years as the Penguins assistant GM from 2009-14, and the two years prior to that as the team’s director of hockey administration beginning in 2007-08 where he was a key architect of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team. Botterill was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the first round (20th overall) in 1994 NHL Draft and played in 88 NHL games for Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo before his career was cut short due to injury. He also suited up for 393 career minor-league games in the American and International Hockey Leagues, tallying 257 career points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four years of college hockey at the University of Michigan and helped lead the Wolverines to an NCAA title in 1996. Botterill represented Canada in three straight World Junior Championships from 1994-96, winning gold medals all three years. Bill Guerin capped his second season as the Penguins assistant general manager by earning the first Stanley Cup championship of his executive career in 2015-16. Guerin’s responsibilities as assistant general manager include serving as a liaison between the players and management. Guerin was Pittsburgh’s player development coach from 2011-14, where he was instrumental in helping develop the Penguins’ minor league, junior and college prospects, including Tom Kuhnhackl, Bryan Rust and Conor Sheary, who all played huge roles in the 2016 championship run. Originally drafted by New Jersey in the first round (5th overall) of the 1989 NHL Draft, Guerin won two Stanley Cups (Pittsburgh, 2009; New Jersey, 1995) and spent 18 seasons in the NHL — including his final two with the Penguins. MIKE SULLIVAN Head Coach

Mike Sullivan led the Penguins to one of the greatest in-season turnarounds in franchise history during his first year as head coach in 2015-16, a journey that resulted in a Stanley Cup victory against the San Jose Sharks on June 12, 2016. Adhering to Sullivan’s advice to ‘Just Play’, the Penguins ended the regular season with the secondbest record in the Eastern Conference and fourth-best mark in the league, in large part because of a 14-2 run to conclude the regular season. By leading the Penguins to the franchise’s fourth Cup, Sullivan became just the sixth American-born head coach to win the Stanley Cup. Prior to being promoted to Pittsburgh, Sullivan spent the first two-plus months of the 2015-16 season as the head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins. During his 23-game tenure in WB/S, his club went 18-5, which was good enough for first place in the Atlantic Division. Sullivan’s club also had a franchise-best 11-game winning streak. A native of Marshfield, Massachusetts, Sullivan began his coaching career in 2002-03, starting the season as head coach of the AHL’s Providence Bruins before joining the NHL’s Bruins as an assistant coach late in the year. He was promoted to head coach of the NHL Bruins at age 35 in 2003-04, winning a Northeast Division crown in the first of his two years at the helm. Sullivan served as an NHL assistant coach for seven-consecutive years from 2007-14 with Tampa Bay, the NY Rangers and Vancouver. In addition to his professional coaching experience, Sullivan has coached the United States three times internationally, including the 2016 World Cup of Hockey when he was an assistant coach. He was the head coach at the 2007 World Championship and an assistant coach at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turino, Italy. During the 2014-15 season, Sullivan was a member of the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks player development staff. Sullivan’s 11-year NHL career began with the expansion San Jose Sharks in 1991-92 and included stops in Calgary, Boston and Arizona. Sullivan played four years of collegiate hockey at Boston University from 1986-90, serving as the Terriers captain as a senior. Sullivan represented the U.S. as a player at the 1988 World Junior Championship. For full bio, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

RICK TOCCHET Assistant Coach

Rick Tocchet is in his third season as an assistant coach of the Penguins. In his current role, Tocchet works closely with the team’s speedy and dynamic forward group, which had eight players reach double figures in points during the 2016 playoffs, a key reason Pittsburgh was able to win the franchise’s fourth Stanley Cup, the first Cup win of Tocchet’s coaching career. Tocchet was hired as an assistant coach by Tampa Bay in July, 2008 and was elevated to interim head coach on Nov. 14 of that year. He was named head coach following the ‘08-09 season, where he remained in that position until 2010. Tocchet began his coaching career as an assistant with the Colorado Avalanche for two years (2002-04) before spending one season (‘05-06) with the Phoenix Coyotes. A veteran of 18 NHL seasons, including parts of three seasons with the Penguins from 1992-94, Tocchet won a Stanley Cup championship with Pittsburgh in 1992. The four-time NHL All-Star (1989, ‘90, ‘91, ‘93) played 1,144 career NHL games and totaled 440 goals, 952 points and 2,972 penalty minutes in his NHL career. Tocchet was originally drafted by Philadelphia in the sixth round (125th overall) of the 1983 NHL Draft.

JACQUES MARTIN Assistant Coach

Jacques Martin stepped back behind the Penguins’ bench for a second tour of duty as an assistant coach in December 2015, playing a crucial role in the team’s Stanley Cup win, the first championship of Martin’s lengthy NHL career. Martin, who enters his fourth season in the Pittsburgh organization, presides over the Penguins’ defensemen and penalty killing unit in his current role. He was instrumental in Kris Letang hitting career highs in all offensive categories in 2015-16. Martin’s PK unit finished with the fifth-best success rate in the NHL. Martin has over 25 years of NHL experience as a general manager, head coach and assistant coach with Pittsburgh, Montreal, Florida, Ottawa, Colorado/Quebec, Chicago and St. Louis. He won 613 games and made 12 playoff appearances in 17 seasons as an NHL head coach. He won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s ‘most outstanding coach’ with Ottawa in 1999 and was a finalist for the award on three other occasions. Martin won gold medals as an assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2002 Olympics and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. He was also an assistant coach on the 2006 Canadian Olympic Team.

During the Penguins’ 2016 Stanley Cup championship drive, Pittsburgh used three goaltenders who thrived under his tutelage, including rookie Matt Murray, whose 15 playoff wins equaled the NHL rookie record. Under Bales’ guidance, Marc-Andre Fleury has compiled two of the finest seasons of his career. During the 2014-15 campaign, Fleury established a franchise record with 10 shutouts, a figure that led the entire NHL. Bales began his Penguins’ career as the team’s goaltending development coach from 2011-13. Bales, a native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, spent 18 seasons playing professionally from 1992-2010, including stints in the NHL with Boston and Ottawa. KUNITZ QUIETLY MOVES UP

Franchise Leaderboards

When then-general manager Ray Shero struck a multi-player deal with the Anaheim Ducks on Feb. 26, 2009, it was widely assumed that Pittsburgh had acquired a high-upside forward who could spend the better part of the next decade flanking the club’s elite centermen, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. Eight years, two Stanley Cup championships, four 20-goal seasons and 360 points later, that assumption has proved correct, albeit not necessarily unfolding the way it was originally expected. On that winter afternoon in 2009, Shero dealt from his surplus of offensiveminded blueliners, exchanging Ryan Whitney for a pair of wingers, gritty and feisty Chris Kunitz, and junior scoring star Eric Tangradi. The expectation was Kunitz, who won a Stanley Cup with the Ducks in 2007, would step in immediately on the wing for a couple of years, with Tangradi then complementing Crosby and Malkin well into the future. Tangradi, in large part because of a gruesome injury suffered while playing junior, never fulfilled his offensive expectations. But the fact that he never panned out didn’t cripple the Penguins, mainly because Kunitz quickly established himself as both a short- and long-term solution on Pittsburgh’s top lines. “When I got traded it was quite a shock to me,” Kunitz told reporters recently following a practice at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. continued on page 66

“I think back to one guy I said goodbye to, Scott Niedermayer. He said that it ‘might be the best thing for your career.’ I can always look back and think that those words of wisdom came from him. It worked out in the end.” The move to Pittsburgh more than worked out, both for Kunitz and for the team. During his time wearing ‘black and gold’, Kunitz has put together an impressive run that ranks him among the best players to ever skate for the Penguins. On October 15, playing against the Ducks, Kunitz became just the 18th player in franchise history to appear in 500 games with the team. In that same contest, he helped set up Conor Sheary’s go-ahead goal, which gave Kunitz his 200th assist as a Penguin. Kunitz has compiled those lofty numbers by spending much of his time in Pittsburgh on Crosby’s left wing. When Crosby missed the better part of a year with concussion issues between 2011 and ’12, Kunitz shifted to Malkin’s line, and helped the Russian pivot capture a scoring title in 2012. Why has Kunitz been so effective skating with either star, whose playing styles differ immensely? “I’ve always been a guy who gets in on the forecheck and causes disruption,” Kunitz described. “I don’t carry the puck too often. I like to give to guys who do. Fortunately we’ve had a lot of guys here who do.” Kunitz isn’t done jumping up Pittsburgh’s all-time leaderboards. Heading into a home meeting with Colorado on October 17, he needed just four goals to rank among the top-10 goal scorers in club history. Continuing to skate alongside Crosby and Malkin, Kunitz figures to get those tallies sooner rather than later.

Mighty Penguins First Annual

SLED FACEOFF CHALLENGE

Spencer Nicol On October 7, 2016, the Pittsburgh area’s biggest sled hockey program hosted their first tournament at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. The Mighty Penguins organization marks this as a major milestone for the program’s goals and initiatives for the future of sled hockey in the steel city. 11 teams, across three divisions, competed over the weekend in what would be the first of many Mighty Penguins tournaments. The Novice, Junior, and Intermediate divisions all played games on the same ice as the championship Pittsburgh Penguins, and saw a world-class facility first hand. There is really no other sport like sled hockey in North America. It combines traditional hockey skills, upper body strength, and provides much more difficult obstacles to navigate. Not to mention that players use two sticks and push themselves up and down the ice with those same arms. This seems like no easy task, but these players are used to challenges and take on these speed bumps in full stride. The Mighty Penguins have only showed fans the tip of the iceberg this October allowing them to see that anything is possible with the right attitude and proper preparation. Pittsburgh is a deeply rooted hockey community that can contribute so much to an organization that deserves the world. The Mighty Penguins are an integral part of that hockey community, providing a fun and competitive atmosphere for those players who wouldn’t have had the chance to play otherwise. In the future, the Mighty Penguins hope to establish a greater base for sled hockey in Pittsburgh. Their program rivals some of the best cities in North America and aims to create a more central hub for competition. In addition, partnering with teams like the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite and the Central Catholic Vikings has helped spread awareness and gain support for the outstanding players and staff. The organization believes there is much untapped potential in Pittsburgh, and is always looking to expand the game they love even further. For information on the programs please visit mightypenguins.com or send an email to info@penguinssledhockey.org.

Penguins Profile:

KRIS LETANG

Mark Madden

Three-on-three overtime can be difficult. Kris Letang knows exactly when that is. “When you don’t have the puck, it’s hard,” said the Montreal-born defenseman. “When you have the puck, it’s easy. You let the puck work for you. When you don’t have it, it’s pretty hard — the hardest thing to do.” Letang lived that experience in the Penguins’ opener, a 3-2 shootout win over Washington at PPG Paints Arena on Oct. 13. Letang played a game-high 30:40, including 2:42 of the five-minute overtime. The Penguins got outshot 6-2 in overtime. The Capitals had most of the puck. But the Penguins prevailed, thanks in no small part to Letang. Letang converted in the shootout, and his power-play blast was tipped in by Patric Hornqvist at 8:47 of the second period for the Penguins’ first goal of the season. “That’s what he does,” Letang said. “Patric is an intense guy. He plays dirty in front of the net on the power play. It’s a hard job to do.” Letang is an intense guy, too. He had an intense job against Washington, matching up against Capitals winger Alex Ovechkin most of the night. Ovechkin has seven 50-goal seasons, and is a potent combination of speed, strength and finishing ability. But, in the opener, the Penguins held Ovechkin to no points, five shots and a minus-one mark. Much of the credit for that goes to Letang. “He plays against other team’s top players all the time,” said coach Mike Sullivan. “I thought he did a real good job. I don’t think Tanger gets the credit he deserves for his defensive play, and his play away from the puck. “His offense speaks for itself. His numbers are terrific. He quarterbacks the power play. His offense is evident. “But I don’t think he gets nearly the credit he deserves for how good he is defensively. He’s got a quick stick. He’s ultra-competitive. He can be physical when he needs to be, and he defends hard.” continued on page 79 77

The most exhausting part of Letang’s opening-game duty was likely the time he logged in OT. “It’s tough, especially when they’re buzzing around, and they have speed,” Letang said. “You don’t want to commit and get beat. It’s hard. But once you have the puck, it’s their turn to get tired.” The Penguins weren’t shy about attacking when they did have the puck in overtime. “We were trying to make plays,” Letang said. “You don’t want to take a bad-angle shot, and they retrieve the puck and now you’re playing defense in your zone. In overtime, you have to hold onto the puck and try to make a perfect play.” The Capitals made a few of those. But Fleury came up big during three-on-three, especially when he turned aside a point-blank backhand by T.J. Oshie. “I know what [Fleury’s] capable of,” said the 6-foot-1, 201 pound Letang. “He’s a great goaltender, and he played huge for us.” Very rarely does the pre-game threaten to overshadow the actual hockey, but the opener was an exception as the Penguins raised their 2016 Stanley Cup banner. “It’s fun to have the chance to do it in front of our fans,” Letang said. “It was a little bit tough [to start the game], but everybody just needed to get a shift.” Letang, 29, has had a plethora of defensive partners since joining the Penguins as a third-round pick in 2005. He started this season in tandem with Brian Dumoulin. “I’m really comfortable with him,” Letang said.” He’s a good skater, and he’s got a good stick. He plays really well all over the ice.” Letang had 16 goals and 51 assists (both career highs) in 71 games last season. He added three goals and 12 assists in 23 playoff games and netted what proved to be the Stanley Cup-winning goal in Game Six of the Final at San Jose. Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

The Inside Scoop:

WHITE HOUSE VISIT Sam Kasan

It has become customary for the President of the United States of America to invite any professional team that wins its league championship to the White House. Barack Obama continued that tradition by inviting the 2016 Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins for a visit to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue on Oct. 6 to honor them for their title run. The Penguins players, coaches, trainers, management and staff gathered for an 8AM flight from Pittsburgh en route to Washington, D.C. Before arriving at the White House, a quick stop was needed to pick up an old friend — a holy chalice known as the Stanley Cup. With the hardware in tow, the Penguins arrived at the President’s confines a little after 10AM. The group was given a tour of the White House’s East Wing, which featured the Red, Green and Blue Rooms. And then the President himself arrived. President Obama had a private meeting with the owners, coaches and players before everyone came out to join the rest of the media and attendees. With the Penguins players standing behind him, President Obama delivered one of his classic speeches — articulate, charismatic and funny. Regardless of your politics, the President definitely commands the room. I mean, his opening line was: “We are here to celebrate an extraordinary achievement. Phil Kessel is a Stanley Cup champion.” Things only got better from there. “To be able to win and to be able to have this experience, it’s a great opportunity coming here,” captain Sidney Crosby said. “It’s one of those things that after you win it you think of the celebration. But to be able to do this is pretty unique and seems like everyone had a lot of fun with it.”

The Inside Scoop:

PENGUINS RING CEREMONY Michelle Crechiolo

The Penguins received their 2016 Stanley Cup championship rings at a private ceremony on October 10 at Heinz History Center. “It’s kind of like waking up Christmas morning, you’re so excited,” forward Chris Kunitz said. “I think they did a great job with the presentations, the videos. They keep evolving, just like the team did throughout the year. I know everybody’s very excited about what the rings look like and how they turned out. The diamond work, the face of it really looks very classy just like the organization that we play for.” The rings were created by Jostens. “It’s amazing,” goalie Matt Murray said of his new hardware. “It’s a lot bigger than I was expecting, a lot heavier than I was expecting. It’s something you strive for in your hockey career. So it’s a pretty special moment here tonight to be able to share it with everybody.” The night began with a cocktail hour, where the Stanley Cup was set up outside on the terrace with beautiful views of Pittsburgh behind it. After that, the crowd filtered inside for dinner. Two videos were shown – one an emotional highlight video, the other a hilarious blooper reel – before the ceremony officially began. The players didn’t open their ring boxes individually like they did in 2009. This year, they opened them all at once. They won as a group, and they put their rings on as a group with their victory song, Hall and Oates’ “You Make My Dreams Come True,” playing over the speakers. The wives and significant others received rings as well. After that, it was time for everyone to admire their new keepsakes. “We got a lot of good pictures here and it’s a day we’ll never forget, for sure,” Murray said. “It’s just awesome to share it with people.”

In 2015, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and the Allegheny Intermediate Unit introduced the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation (PFF) STEAM Lending Library to schools districts in Allegheny County. This oneof-a-kind, first in the nation, program has given students the opportunity to explore technology that they may have never had access to otherwise. Stressing the importance of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math) learning in the region, the Library gives teachers the opportunity to borrow technology to use in their classrooms. The PPF STEAM Lending Library contains nearly 1,000 items, and to date, has impacted educators from 40 schools districts in Allegheny County.

Entering its third year, Tablets in Education has provided elementary students in 11 counties the opportunity to enhance their education through technology. Since its inception in 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation has donated over 3,900 Kindle Fire tablets to over 200 school districts and special needs programs in the region; impacting over 100,000 students. Along with the support from the Allegheny Intermediate Unit, Tablets in Education continues to change the way students in our region learn. MIKE LANGE Penguins Radio Network Play-by-Play Announcer

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 42nd season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

PHIL BOURQUE Penguins Radio Network Color Analyst

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 14th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey. 111

HOCKEY ETIQUETTE 101 Our goal? To create an awesome game experience for all fans! Help make that happen by remembering the following: 1.

DO NOT ENTER OR EXIT THE SEATING AREA DURING PLAY! Hockey is fast — and goals can be missed in an instant. Fans moving through rows and up aisles can block the view of an entire seating area. Wait until the whistle blows to make your move. HINT #1: The red light above the penalty boxes is lit for TV timeouts. TV timeouts occur at the first whistle stops inside the 14:00, 10:00, and 6:00 minute mark of each period, EXCEPT following an icing call or goal. When the light comes on, this is your chance to make a dash to the restroom or your seats! HINT #2: The concourse TVs feature a countdown clock during the intermissions. Smart, huh? Thank the season ticket holders for recommending this awesome idea!

118

2.

NO LEANING! We know you are into the game, but leaning creates a ripple effect, affecting the view of the fans in the rows behind you. Sit back so all can enjoy the game!

3.

Keep your eyes on the puck! Pucks can hurt when they enter the seating area!

4.

The arena is a non-smoking facility; smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, is prohibited.

5.

It’s hard to like fans of the opposing team, we get it. However, we think it is pretty cool that they chose to come to our building. Be aware of children sitting around you and let the guys on the ice do the talking!

6.

Cheer, clap and let the players know you are here! Hockey is the best sport to watch live — have fun!

Since 2012, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered to build a total of 12 dek hockey rinks for local communities through their unique Project Power Play program. Project Power Play is a $2.3 million initiative that was designed to build one dozen dek rinks in Pittsburgh and the surrounding communities over a four-year period. To support the program, Highmark provided $1.5 million in funding. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation also provided funding for the project. The City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and surrounding communities provided the land as well as maintenance services, lighting and additional support. The rinks are multi-purpose courts and are suitable for hockey and other sports; including, soccer and lacrosse. All rink sites were chosen based on a community’s need for this type of facility and a local commitment to develop youth programming. Citiparks and local athletic associations continue to program the rinks, with the assistance from the Penguins organization.

REMINDERS

to Inspire this Season’s Quest Mike Prisuta

Patric

HORNQVIST

The 2016-17 campaign opened with a welldeserved celebration that recognized the Stanley Cup the Penguins had captured last season and also inspired reminders regarding what’ll they’ll be counting upon in the quest to do it again. Such as:

Winger Patric Hornqvist playing his game: “He’s just a real good player,” head coach Mike Sullivan noted after Hornqvist had scored a goal, forechecked relentlessly and otherwise harassed the Washington Capitals in a 3-2 shootout victory on Oct. 13. “He’s kind of like a bull in a china closet. He goes to the net, plays in the battle areas and he’s good on the boards, he’s hard to play against. He’s frustrating for our opponents because he’s always in the way, he’s in areas all the time. He’s in the goalie’s sight lines, he’s impeding the goalie’s movement. He’s always in the corners battling, grabbing sticks and finishing checks and that’s what he does for our team. “He’s so valuable no matter how we use him or who we use him with. One of the reasons he’s on the first power-play unit is because of those reasons. He does a lot of the thankless jobs that you can’t necessarily quantify on the scoresheet but they help you win.”

Defenseman Kris Letang playing his game: “He plays against other team’s top players a lot,” Sullivan pointed out. “I don’t think ‘Tanger’ gets the credit he deserves for his defensive play and his play away from the puck. His offense speaks for itself. His numbers are terrific. He quarterbacks the power play. His offense, for me, is evident. 148

“I don’t think he gets nearly the credit he deserves for how good he is defensively. He has a quick stick, he’s ultra competitive, he can be physical when he needs to be and he defends hard. We use him in all the key situations both offensively and defensively. That’s why he logs the minutes he logs. That’s why, for me, he’s one of the top defensemen in the league.”

Finding ways to hold up against physical, “heavy” teams such as the Capitals: “I thought we did a good job of keeping the puck moving and avoiding some of those Brian hits,” defenseman DUMOULIN Brian Dumoulin said. Beyond that, “We’re not the most physical team but I think we’re smart with it, whether it’s stick position or rubbing guys out or getting in the way,” Dumoulin continued. “From us you rarely see a big bonecrushing hit but just the little plays of rubbing guys out and getting in the way benefits us.”

Managing the puck the right way at regular-season speed (which is going to take a little getting used to, apparently): “Sometimes you want to go as hard as you can in preseason but you still don’t quite get up to that game speed, the regularseason game speed,” forward Eric Fehr said. Fehr’s anticipation after the opener was that in “a couple more games” the Penguins were “going to make those small plays” with regularity. “Those are the plays that are missing, chips into space,” he said after the Eric Caps game. “We’re just hanging FEHR onto pucks a little too long.” continued on page 151

our game,” winger Conor Sheary said. “We like to roll four lines. And when we roll four lines, I think that’s when we’re at our best. We expect that throughout the lineup and we have a lot of good players on this team that can play offense.”

Playing ~ Evgeni Malkin the right way (always the No. 1 objective under Sullivan):

“I thought we showed signs of playing the game the right way as we define it,” he said. “We had other moments where we didn’t play quite as smart or as thorough or as diligent (as desired). We showed signs where I thought we got to our game. I think we just need to continue to do that more consistently.”

And, last but not least, turning the page once and for all on the ceremony, celebration and last season’s Cup: Center Evgeni Malkin called the ceremony before the opener “a very special moment, and the “whole summer was special.” Then he added “I hope it’s the last time. “We should forget everything and start the new season, forget 2016 and the Stanley Cup,” Malkin advised. “We need to start to work again and keep going every game.”

TENACIOUS TEAMWORK:

Ken Parme’s Pancreatic Cancer Journey

Ken Parme had always kept in shape by eating right and working out, but in 2012, he began losing weight. He also had chest pain and felt under the weather. His wife of 39 years insisted he visit the doctor, who diagnosed him with diabetes. They figured the pain was from pull-ups, but his wife wasn’t sure. Helena Levitt, MD, a UPMC endocrinologist, confirmed the diabetes diagnosis and ordered a CT scan to find the source of the pain. The CT revealed pancreatic cancer. “That was a diagnosis I never expected to hear,” Ken said. “Fortunately, Dr. Levitt knew Dr. Herbert Zeh and Dr. Nathan Bahary, so she sent me to them.” Ken’s tumor was wrapped around his veins and lying against his aorta. Dr. Bahary ordered chemotherapy to shrink the tumor for Whipple surgery, but chemo wasn’t working fast enough. The oncology team suggested CyberKnife® Radiosurgery, which noninvasively delivers radiation directly to the tumor. At the time of his diagnosis, survival rates were only five percent over a five-year period. Now nearly five years in, Ken considers himself fortunate to still be here. He’s not at 100 percent, but Ken’s able to enjoy what he loves most — writing songs and spending time with family. Together, Ken and his wife wrote a book about pancreatic cancer from each of their perspectives. He’s grateful to his team for taking care of him. “We both knew I was in good hands. Dr. Bahary pushes the envelope, but he’s not reckless. He gives everything a lot of thought,” Ken said. “They keep a close eye. I told Dr. Zeh about a hernia I had, and he said ‘Let me take care of that for you’ because he didn’t trust anyone else to do it. I have the highest regard for them.” 161

PENGUINS IN THE CLASSROOM …

TEACHING STEAM!

Chartiers Valley Middle School

Chartiers Valley Middle School’s STEAM classroom kicked off the school year with the Penguin’s Future Goals — Hockey Scholar program for a unit on how math intersects with the real world. Students greatly enjoyed the interactive simulations and game-like environment in which these lessons are taught. One student said, “I enjoy math. I enjoy hockey. It’s nice to see them used together in real life!” Many of the students are avid Penguins fans and this program has built off of that passion to make learning fun. Teachers enjoy the fact that lessons can be self-paced, allowing students who are advanced to go at a faster pace and students who need more time to move without being rushed. The review exams at the end of each section also give students immediate feedback on their learning progress. “I love how Future Goals makes real life connections to show us how math is used in real life settings all over the world,” said another STEAM class student. Hockey Scholar is a digital resource that provides students an opportunity to experience different aspects of hockey while immersing themselves in problem solving situations involving engineering, math and science. If you’re a 5th-8th grade teacher, learn how to bring Future Goals to your classroom by visiting futuregoals.nhl.com/penguins!

CULLEN’S VETERAN PRESENCE

Invaluable to Penguins Bryanna McDermott

Last summer, Matt Cullen was thinking about hanging up his skates and retiring from the NHL. Nobody would have blamed him either. Cullen has had a long career as a professional hockey player. At that point, he had played 1,212 games over seventeen seasons with seven teams, collecting 626 points and a Stanley Cup with the Carolina Hurricanes. But the Minnesota native, who grew up playing hockey with his brothers on a backyard rink, just wasn’t ready to let the sport he loved go just yet. Cullen felt he had a couple more years left in him, he just needed the right team. That’s when Pittsburgh stepped in and signed the veteran center to a one-year deal on August 6, 2015, reuniting Cullen with ex-Carolina general manager, Jim Rutherford. The deal took just 25 minutes. “I was at home in the summer contemplating being done with the game,” Cullen said. “I’m very happy with how long I’ve been able to play the game and I consider it a real blessing to play as long as I have. I went from feeling that I may be done with the game to talking with Jim and getting the opportunity to play here and try it for another season.” Cullen did more than try. The veteran forward, who will turn 40 on Nov. 2, transcended age to complement the young speed that fueled the Penguins lineup — scoring 16 goals during the 2015-16 regular season. Last season was a tough journey for the Penguins. The team started 0-3 and by December 12, they were a disappointing 15-10-3 and out of playoff contention. As changes were quickly made to the Penguins lineup and coaching staff, Cullen’s veteran experience helped calm the emotions running through the locker room. “It was awesome playing with him,” Tom Kuhnhackl said of Cullen, his linemate throughout the playoffs. “He’s experienced so much. I don’t think he just helped me, he helped all of the young guys feel comfortable around here. He knows what it takes to win and we could see that last year. Every time we needed him he stepped up for us big time.” Cullen had four clutch goals during the playoffs, and was a big reason the Penguins were able to win the Stanley Cup on June 12 in San Jose. “I just couldn’t believe that we were there and it was happening,” Cullen said of winning the Stanley Cup with the Penguins. “It was just a really 172

“It still gives me goosebumps thinking about it. It was just an unbelievable moment.”

special moment for me. I had my entire family waiting in the stands and to be able to see my boys run across the ice after we won it was something I’ll never forget. It still gives me ~ Matt Cullen goosebumps thinking about it. It was just an unbelievable moment.” It was Cullen’s second Stanley Cup win, his first coming in 2006. This time around, in his 18th NHL season, Cullen was able to sit back and enjoy the moment. “Ten years is a long time between Cups,” Cullen said. “That first one, it was a real magical season. I was just at a different point in my life, so for me to go through that experience, it was amazing. It was just a total blur. I think this time I probably appreciated a little more of it as I was going through it and continued on page 175

really soaked in the experience. Obviously having my boys involved in it really added a lot to it and made it totally a different dynamic for me personally.” A lot changed for Cullen in those ten years between Cup wins. Most notably, his sons, Brooks, Wyatt and Joey. Cullen’s boys are his biggest supporters, great scouts and tough critics. “They really are a big part of my career,” Cullen said of his sons. “It adds so much to the game for me. At this point in my career, to see how excited they get about the games and how much it means to them, I get a lot of energy just watching them. They love the game of hockey. Just having them in the locker room and around these guys, it means the world to me.” Cullen’s family is a big part of the reason he decided to rejoin the Penguins for the 2016-17 season. “Pittsburgh feels like home to us,” Cullen said of his family’s love for the city. “And just having my three boys around the rink, they love it here. They love the hockey, the city, they love everything about it. They’re at an age where it’s really fun to see them around the rink and talking to guys like (Sidney Crosby) and all the other guys. It’s just such a unique life experience and to me, as a dad, to give them one more year, one more opportunity to be around it, for me to have them around it, I can’t really give them anything else. “I can’t teach them to screw in a light bulb very well, but I can bring them around the rink and give them this experience. It’s pretty special for a dad.”
