The Series vs. Toronto The Penguins and Toronto Maple Leafs meet here tonight for the first, and only time this season, here in Pittsburgh. Their next meeting is in Toronto on Dec. 17, where they will also play on April 8. . . The Penguins have not lost a season series to the Leafs since going 1-3-0 against them in 2008-09. . . Pittsburgh went 2-0-1 against Toronto last season, winning here on Oct. 17 (2-1) and in Toronto on Oct. 31 (4-0) before losing here last Dec. 30 (2-3 SO). The Penguins had beaten Toronto seven straight games before that shootout loss — the Penguins’ longest winning streak against the Leafs. . . The Leafs haven’t won consecutive games here since Dec. 20, 2008 (7-3) and Dec. 27, 2009 (4-3). . . Pittsburgh has killed 19 straight penalties against the Leafs since Tyler Bozak beat Marc-Andre Fleury in Toronto on Oct. 11, 2014. . . Pittsburgh is 11-2-1 in its last 14 games against Toronto when scoring first. . . Pittsburgh was off to an 8-2-2 start after 12 games this season before beginning a three-game homestand this week against the Oilers, Wild and Leafs. That left them three points behind Montreal in the NHL’s overall standings. . . Despite missing the first six games of the season, Crosby took over the NHL’s goal-scoring lead with eight on Nov. 5 by scoring twice in the Penguins’ 5-0 win in San Jose. It was the best goal output of his career in the opening six games of a season. . . Crosby had points in 14 straight regular season games dating back to last season (13+6) and 26 of his last 27 (19+20) before facing the Oilers here on Nov. 8. His most productive 27-game stretch saw him go 26+26 from Oct. 30-Dec. 28, 2010. . . Conor Sheary returned from an eye injury Nov. 5 at San Jose and had two assists to give him five points in five games this season. . . Carl Hagelin matched a career high with three points (all assists) in the win over San Jose. . . Matt Murray had won nine consecutive decisions over two seasons after stopping 32 shots in San Jose for his second career regular season shutout. The longest win streaks by a Pittsburgh goaltender are 14 by Tom Barrasso in 1992-93 and 11 by Marc-Andre Fleury in 2010-11. . . During their 3-0-1 road trip that ended last week, the Penguins killed 12 of 14 penalties. . . Pittsburgh was 5-0-1 at home this season before hosting Edmonton, and the Penguins had gone 21-4-1 in their past 26 regular season home games at that point. Pittsburgh had produced a power play goal in each of the last eight home games in that stretch, going 11-for-28 (39.2 percent) . . . The Penguins outshot their opponents just four times in the opening 12 games. . . Pittsburgh begins a three-game road trip Wednesday in Washington and also plays the Islanders and Sabres before returning home to face Tom the Rangers on Nov. 21.

With whom do you attend Penguins home games? My wife and children, ages seven and 11 What motivated you to become a season ticket holder? I became a big fan of the team in the late 1980s, and it really took off with the Cup years in the early 1990s. My uncle shared front row seats behind the goal, so he would bring me to some games each year. When I went to college, I started with a partial season ticket plan and would make the trip from Erie to see games.

Aside from on-ice action, what do you enjoy most about attending Penguins games? I just like being in the arena, full of other fans. My kids love going to the Kids’ Zone. We live a good drive away, so I enjoy the time we have being there. What is the most unique keepsake in your personal collection of Penguins memorabilia? I have a large thick cardboard WTAE Penguins poster with the schedule and team photo from the 1968-69 season. It Josh, his wife Cathy, and their children Alex and Magen, celebrating the 2016 Stanley Cup win belonged to my late uncle, with a family photo shoot. Ron Ramsey, who was a huge Penguins fan from those early years. What non-Penguins player do you enjoy seeing on PPG Paints Arena ice? I still like to see our old buddy, Jaromir Jagr, when he returns to Pittsburgh. Even though there are some mixed feeling there, I was a huge Jagr fan when he was a Penguin and can’t help but be impressed that he’s still playing at such a high level. What has been your favorite off-ice Penguins event to attend and why? I remember the old season ticket holderonly autograph events at the Civic Arena. That’s when I had the chance to meet Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr, Tom Barrasso and all the greats from those first two Cup teams.

In 2016, just as with 2009, our family was out-of-state for much of the Final series. Although we wanted the Penguins to win the Cup at home in Game Five, it was more meaningful for us for them to win it like they did in Game Six, June 12, our wedding anniversary. So, for the past two Stanley Cups, the Penguins have won the Cup on our anniversary while we were watching in a hotel! In your eyes, what makes the Pittsburgh Penguins, or hockey in general, great? Hockey is such a great sport — the athleticism, the artistry, the skill. Few other sports require as much from the players as hockey does. As for the Penguins, this team has been magical ever since Mario Lemieux was drafted. While he’s the gold standard and best ever, the Penguins have always had a commitment to high-skilled talent. We’ve been blessed to see many of the greatest players of all time skate for the Penguins over the years, and the tradition certainly continues today with Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury and others. I can’t think of a better way to spend a wintry Saturday night than at a Penguins game.

POWER RANGERS: New York’s 5-2 win over Winnipeg on Nov. 6 was the Rangers’ 10th victory in 13 tries, which tied the franchise record for wins through the first 13 games of a season (1990-91 and 2008-09). It was also New York’s fifth consecutive win and marked the first time the Rangers had scored at least five goals in at least five consecutive games since Dec. 26, 1978– Jan. 14, 1979 (nine games).

PENGUINS’ MISERY IN PHILLY SURPASSED: Anaheim’s 4-1 win over Calgary on Nov. 6 was the Ducks’ 24th consecutive home win over the Flames dating back to April 4, 2004 (Calgary is 0-19-5 at Anaheim in that time). That surpassed the NHL-record 23 consecutive times the Flyers beat the Penguins at the Spectrum in Philadelphia from Feb. 17, 1980–Jan. 29, 1987.

It’s already been a season of achievement for Blackhawks RW Marian Hossa. He became the fourth active player to reach 1,100 career points with an overtime goal in a 4-3 win over the Stars on Nov. 6 in Chicago. Hossa’s two goals in a 4-0 win over Colorado on Nov. 3 had moved him past Peter Bondra and made Hossa the all-time goal-scoring leader among Slovakian-born NHL players (504). Hossa had netted his 500th career goal in a 7-4 win over Philadelphia on Oct. 18.

OVIE AT IT IN OT AGAIN:

Capitals LW Alex Ovechkin scored at 3:21 of overtime to help Washington beat Winnipeg, 4-3, on Nov. 3. It was Ovechkin’s 91st career game-winning goal, which tied Wayne Gretzky, Mark Recchi and Mike Gartner for 19th place on the NHL’s all-time list. Ovechkin’s 18 career goals in overtime rank second to Jaromir Jagr (19) in NHL history.

MARIO LEMIEUX Co-Owner/Chairman

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in the National Hockey League, added a new line to his Hall of Fame career last season: Two-time champion owner. The Penguins claimed the Cup for the second time since Lemieux and partner Ron Burkle bought the team out of bankruptcy in 1999. It gave him four Stanley Cups overall, including two as a player in 1991 and 1992. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice – including 10 straight playoff appearances and four conference final appearances in the past nine seasons, in addition to the two Cups. The Penguins entered the 2016-17 season having sold out every game for nineplus seasons while setting new standards for television ratings, corporate sales and social media. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open the arena in August, 2010. The facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. RON BURKLE Co-Owner

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing, technology and distribution industries, is in his 18th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports, leading the team to Stanley Cup championships in 2009 and 2016. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. It is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh, including NCAA basketball and hockey. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for nine-plus seasons and consistently ranked among the most fan-friendly and community-minded teams in the NHL and all of pro sports. The Penguins have earned 10 straight playoff berths and reached the conference finals four times in the past nine years, in addition to the two Stanley Cups. The team’s solid foundation of ownership has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign many of the team’s core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Stanley Cupchampion Penguins, overseeing all aspects of the team’s operation. The Penguins have become one of the NHL’s strongest business entities during his tenure– selling out every game for nine-plus seasons, setting new standards for television ratings and corporate sales and increasing their focus on innovative youth marketing. Morehouse joined the team as consultant on the new arena project in 2004 and was named team president in April 2007. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer just as the new arena was opening in August 2010. Under his leadership, the Penguins have reshaped their strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, community interaction, corporate outreach and cutting-edge technology, while maintaining a high level of performance on the ice. A strong commitment to fan outreach includes an annual event where players personally deliver season tickets to fans’ homes and a special preseason game were all 18,000 tickets are distributed free to local youth. Morehouse also was a driving force behind the new UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, which opened in August 2015. JIM RUTHERFORD Executive Vice President & General Manager

Jim Rutherford enters his third year as Penguins executive vice president and general manager fresh off the greatest season of his managerial career. During the course of the 2015-16 campaign, Rutherford transformed the Penguins into Stanley Cup champions, thanks in large part to his acquisitions of Phil Kessel, Nick Bonino, Trevor Daley and Carl Hagelin, plus the promotion of Mike Sullivan to head coach in December of 2015. When the Penguins defeated the San Jose Sharks to win the franchise’s fourth Stanley Cup on June 12, 2016, Rutherford became the first GM in the post-1967 Expansion Era to manage multiple teams to Cup victories, having also done so with Carolina in 2006. As a reward for quick, on-the-fly re-shaping of the Penguins’ roster, Rutherford won the NHL General Manager of the Year Award for his work in ’15-16. Rutherford spent the previous 20 years as GM of the Carolina Hurricanes/ Hartford Whalers franchise from 1994-2014, where he was a key architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team. In addition to his general manager duties, he also served 20 years as president of Carolina/Hartford, taking the post in 1994. In his role as president/GM, Rutherford oversaw operations on both the hockey and business sides of the organization. Over the course of his executive career, Rutherford has won multiple awards, including The Hockey News‘ Executive of the Year in 2002 and ’06. Additionally, he was voted by his NHL general management peers as Sporting News ‘Executive of the Year’ in 2006. Before his 22 years in the NHL, Rutherford was recognized as the 1987 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Executive of the Year, and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Executive of the Year in back-to-back years with the Windsor Spitfires in 1987 and ’88. He oversaw a Spitfires team that won the OHL championship in 1988 and earned a berth in the Memorial Cup. Rutherford played 13 years as a goaltender in the NHL, appearing in 457 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit. JASON BOTTERILL Associate General Manager

Jason Botterill enters this third season as associate general manager having assisted GM Jim Rutherford in making numerous personnel moves over the last year that resulted in the Penguins winning the Stanley Cup in 2016, the second championship Botterill has helped build during his tenure in Pittsburgh. As associate GM, Botterill advises Rutherford on all hockey-related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. During the summer of 2015, Botterill played a leading role in hiring Mike Sullivan as head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League. Following a hot start to the season with WB/S, Sullivan was eventually promoted to Pittsburgh and helped guide the Penguins to the Stanley Cup victory. In addition to his duties in Pittsburgh, Botterill serves as the GM of WB/S, which has made the playoffs all seven years he has overseen the team, including back-to-back berths in the Eastern Conference Final in 2013 and ‘14. Prior to his promotion, Botterill spent the previous five years as the Penguins assistant GM from 2009-14, and the two years prior to that as the team’s director of hockey administration beginning in 2007-08 where he was a key architect of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team. Botterill was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the first round (20th overall) in 1994 NHL Draft and played in 88 NHL games for Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo before his career was cut short due to injury. He also suited up for 393 career minor-league games in the American and International Hockey Leagues, tallying 257 career points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four years of college hockey at the University of Michigan and helped lead the Wolverines to an NCAA title in 1996. Botterill represented Canada in three straight World Junior Championships from 1994-96, winning gold medals all three years. Following his playing career, he received his MBA from his alma mater, the University of Michigan.

BILL GUERIN Assistant General Manager

Bill Guerin capped his second season as the Penguins assistant general manager by earning the first Stanley Cup championship of his executive career in 2015-16. Guerin’s responsibilities as assistant general manager include serving as a liaison between the players and management. Guerin was Pittsburgh’s player development coach from 2011-14, where he was instrumental in helping develop the Penguins’ minor league, junior and college prospects, including Tom Kuhnhackl, Bryan Rust and Conor Sheary, who all played huge roles in the 2016 championship run. Originally drafted by New Jersey in the first round (5th overall) of the 1989 NHL Draft, Guerin won two Stanley Cups (Pittsburgh, 2009; New Jersey, 1995) and spent 18 seasons in the NHL — including his final two with the Penguins. Guerin’s leadership and on-ice performance after being acquired at the NHL trade deadline was a key in Pittsburgh’s ’09 title. Guerin, a four-time NHL All-Star, tallied 429 career goals and 856 points in 1,263 career NHL games, including five 30-goal and two 40-goal seasons. He was elected to the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 2013.

JASON KARMANOS Vice President Of Hockey Operations

Jason Karmanos begins his third season as the Penguins vice president of hockey operations having won the Stanley Cup for the second time in his executive career, after originally winning a championship with Carolina in 2006. Karmanos assists GM Jim Rutherford in all aspects of hockey operations as one of the leaders in the Penguins’ implementation of advance statistics and analysis. Before joining Pittsburgh, Karmanos spent 15 years as an executive for the Carolina Hurricanes from 1998-2013, serving various roles with Carolina, including executive director of hockey operations and vice president/assistant general manager under Rutherford. Karmanos played four years of college hockey at Harvard University from 199296, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors. In 1994, Karmanos represented Team USA at the World Junior Championships, compiling three points (1G-2A) in seven games. After graduating, Karmanos attended training camp with the Penguins in 1996 and played pro hockey for two seasons before his career was cut short due to an eye injury.

MIKE SULLIVAN Head Coach

Mike Sullivan led the Penguins to one of the greatest in-season turnarounds in franchise history during his first year as head coach in 2015-16, a journey that resulted in a Stanley Cup victory against the San Jose Sharks on June 12, 2016. Adhering to Sullivan’s advice to ‘Just Play’, the Penguins ended the regular season with the secondbest record in the Eastern Conference and fourth-best mark in the league, in large part because of a 14-2 run to conclude the regular season. By leading the Penguins to the franchise’s fourth Cup, Sullivan became just the sixth American-born head coach to win the Stanley Cup. Prior to being promoted to Pittsburgh, Sullivan spent the first two-plus months of the 2015-16 season as the head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins. During his 23-game tenure in WB/S, his club went 18-5, which was good enough for first place in the Atlantic Division. Sullivan’s club also had a franchise-best 11-game winning streak. A native of Marshfield, Massachusetts, Sullivan began his coaching career in 2002-03, starting the season as head coach of the AHL’s Providence Bruins before joining the NHL’s Bruins as an assistant coach late in the year. He was promoted to head coach of the NHL Bruins at age 35 in 2003-04, winning a Northeast Division crown in the first of his two years at the helm. Sullivan served as an NHL assistant coach for seven-consecutive years from 2007-14 with Tampa Bay, the NY Rangers and Vancouver. In addition to his professional coaching experience, Sullivan has coached the United States three times internationally, including the 2016 World Cup of Hockey when he was an assistant coach. He was the head coach at the 2007 World Championship and an assistant coach at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turino, Italy. During the 2014-15 season, Sullivan was a member of the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks player development staff. Sullivan’s 11-year NHL career began with the expansion San Jose Sharks in 1991-92 and included stops in Calgary, Boston and Arizona. Sullivan played four years of collegiate hockey at Boston University from 1986-90, serving as the Terriers captain as a senior. RICK TOCCHET Assistant Coach

Rick Tocchet is in his third season as an assistant coach of the Penguins. In his current role, Tocchet works closely with the team’s speedy and dynamic forward group, which had eight players reach double figures in points during the 2016 playoffs, a key reason Pittsburgh was able to win the franchise’s fourth Stanley Cup, the first Cup win of Tocchet’s coaching career. Tocchet was hired as an assistant coach by Tampa Bay in July, 2008 and was elevated to interim head coach on Nov. 14 of that year. He was named head coach following the ‘08-09 season, where he remained in that position until 2010. Tocchet began his coaching career as an assistant with the Colorado Avalanche for two years (2002-04) before spending one season (‘05-06) with the Phoenix Coyotes. A veteran of 18 NHL seasons, including parts of three seasons with the Penguins from 1992-94, Tocchet won a Stanley Cup championship with Pittsburgh in 1992. The four-time NHL All-Star (1989, ‘90, ‘91, ‘93) played 1,144 career NHL games and totaled 440 goals, 952 points and 2,972 penalty minutes in his NHL career. Tocchet was originally drafted by Philadelphia in the sixth round (125th overall) of the 1983 NHL Draft.

JACQUES MARTIN Assistant Coach

Jacques Martin stepped back behind the Penguins’ bench for a second tour of duty as an assistant coach in December 2015, playing a crucial role in the team’s Stanley Cup win, the first championship of Martin’s lengthy NHL career. Martin, who enters his fourth season in the Pittsburgh organization, presides over the Penguins’ defensemen and penalty killing unit in his current role. He was instrumental in Kris Letang hitting career highs in all offensive categories in 2015-16. Martin’s PK unit finished with the fifth-best success rate in the NHL. Martin has over 25 years of NHL experience as a general manager, head coach and assistant coach with Pittsburgh, Montreal, Florida, Ottawa, Colorado/Quebec, Chicago and St. Louis. He won 613 games and made 12 playoff appearances in 17 seasons as an NHL head coach. He won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s ‘most outstanding coach’ with Ottawa in 1999 and was a finalist for the award on three other occasions. Martin won gold medals as an assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2002 Olympics and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. He was also an assistant coach on the 2006 Canadian Olympic Team.

MIKE BALES Goaltending Coach Mike Bales has established himself as one of the NHL’s top goaltending coaches during his first three seasons with the team. During the Penguins’ 2016 Stanley Cup championship drive, Pittsburgh used three goaltenders who thrived under his tutelage, including rookie Matt Murray, whose 15 playoff wins equaled the NHL rookie record. Under Bales’ guidance, Marc-Andre Fleury has compiled two of the finest seasons of his career. During the 2014-15 campaign, Fleury established a franchise record with 10 shutouts, a figure that led the entire NHL. Bales began his Penguins’ career as the team’s goaltending development coach from 2011-13. Bales, a native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, spent 18 seasons playing professionally from 1992-2010, including stints in the NHL with Boston and Ottawa. Bales also saw action with teams in the AHL, IHL, Germany, Sweden and Northern Ireland. He was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the fifth round (105th overall) of the 1990 NHL Draft. Before turning pro, Bales played three collegiate seasons with Ohio State University of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) from 1989-92. TRAVIS WILLIAMS Chief Operating Officer Travis Williams is in his ninth season as a senior executive with the Penguins, currently serving as Chief Operating Officer and overseeing finance, legal affairs, technology, business development and arena operations. He also assists CEO David Morehouse in the day-to-day management of the business. In addition, Williams serves as the Penguins’ point man on the development of the former Civic Arena site and oversaw the construction of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry. Williams joined the Penguins in 2008 as Senior Vice President of Business Affairs/ General Counsel. One of his first responsibilities was to guide the construction and development of the new arena — bringing the project to completion on time and under budget. He now serves as the team’s liaison with building manager AEG Facilities, working closely with AEG on all arena-related events, including major concerts and national-level sporting events. Previously, Williams had been a partner at Reed Smith LLP, where he specialized in mergers and acquisitions, investment management, commercial lending and general corporate matters. TERRY KALNA Senior Vice President of Sales and Broadcasting

Terry Kalna is in his second season as senior vice president of sales and broadcasting following an 18-year career in motorsports management. Kalna, a native of Greensburg, oversees corporate sales, partnership activation, ticket sales and premium sales in addition to the Penguins Radio Network. He is also the primary contact with ROOT SPORTS, the Penguins’ local television rightsholder. Tonight, another phenom who has taken the NHL by storm, Toronto’s Auston Matthews, plays his first game in the Steel City. While Matthews’ profile isn’t quite at McDavid’s level yet, his overall game is in the same stratosphere as hockey’s ‘Next One’. A native of Scottsdale, Arizona and the top draft pick in last June’s draft, Matthews enjoyed arguably the greatest debut in NHL history, scoring all four of his team’s goals in a 5-4 opening-night loss to the Ottawa Senators. Matthews captured the adulation of the hockey Twitterverse, which included Penguins winger Tom Sestito: @TomSestito23: “Austin Matthews might have more career NHL goals than me before the night is over .....” Twelve games into his NHL career, only Matthews’ teammate, William Nylander, has more points among rookies than Matthews’ 11. His 40-goal pace would make Matthews the first freshman to reach that mark since Alex Ovechkin (52) in 2005-06. A pair of Penguins players who have teamed with Matthews within the last year aren’t surprised to see the 6-foot-3, 216-pound Matthews enjoy such early success. “He is just fearless,” said goalie Matt Murray, who was teammates with Matthews at the World Cup in September. “He doesn’t shy away from continued on page 66

the pressure of being the first-overall pick, or being in Toronto. He likes the spotlight. He has a lot of confidence. “He is a man already physically. He has the hockey sense. His speed is very underrated.” “Whenever he has the puck, he seems like he is a threat, no matter where he is,” said defenseman David Warsofsky, who was teammates with Matthews at the 2016 World Championship last spring. “He makes good decisions with the puck. “I also noticed that he is really good at takeaways, kind of like a (Pavel) Datsyuk. He is always lifting sticks and taking pucks on the backcheck.” Neither the World Cup nor the World Championship marked Matthews’ first foray into professional hockey. Last year, when most 17-year-old Americans were enjoying senior proms, Matthews was starring professionally for the ZSC Lions of the Swiss League, producing 24 goals and 46 points in just 36 games. “I think playing pro overseas before his draft year really helped him out a lot,” Murray said. “He really didn’t need any transition time.” Matthews’ on-ice excellence isn’t limited to his playing skills. Last week, during a clobbering of the Vancouver Canucks, Matthews and fellow freshman sensation Mitch Marner were caught singing Bon Jovi on the Leafs bench during a timeout. If his first month is any indication, Matthews will ensure that someday in the near future, Maple Leafs’ fans’ dreams of ending a Stanley Cup drought that stretches back to 1967 will no longer be ‘Livin’ on a Prayer’.

FAST AND FURIOUS START IN PIHL SEASON After a very successful PIHL season in 2015-2016, the league looks to repeat its streak of good overall competition between all divisions. Just a month into the season and all teams are in full swing. There have been some outstanding performances already in this young season. Jacob Bacik, Jared Schimizzi and Jamie Mauro all have gotten off to a quick start with each leading their divisions in scoring. Class A’s Mauro is leading all goal scorers with 12 goals and 14 total points, while his team, Franklin Regional, has gotten off to an even better start. They have won four games and haven’t lost yet, while only allowing two goals against. Daniel Soltesz has been rock solid in goal playing in every minute thus far, with two shutouts. Class AA’s Schimizzi has already produced a wide gap between him and the second top scorer. He has 22 points in just six games, eleven goals and eleven assists. However, Hampton has gotten off to the best start as a team, going 5-0 with the most goals scored in AA. Kameron Bott and Jacob Mcgee, goalies at Hampton, have both been there to backstop a strong team in front of him. Class AAA’s Seneca Valley has started the 2016-17 season much better than most, especially on the defensive side of the game. Dylan Sloat and Logan Johnson have teamed up by only allowing eight goals in five games, with Sloats league-leading 0.939 save percentage. On the other hand, Upper St. Clair’s Bacik and Stevenson are the top two scorers in AAA. Stevenson is tied for first with six goals in just five games. We are all anticipating an intense upcoming season. The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League has provided the western PA community with great hockey and this year is going to be no different. There is constantly great competition throughout all divisions and this year is going to be no exception. We are lucky to have some amazing athletes participating in our high school leagues, so get out to your nearest rink to take in some quality hockey.

Matt Murray won a Stanley Cup, and then played for Team North America in the World Cup of Hockey — all before what is technically his rookie season in the NHL. The start of that “rookie season” got delayed when Murray broke his stick (right) hand at the World Cup. But the lanky 6-foot-4, 178-pounder re-entered the crease with a bang Nov. 2, making 32 saves as the Penguins won at Anaheim, 5-1. “It’s a good feeling to get back and get a win in the first one,” Murray said after. “I think my job was pretty easy tonight. The team played extremely well, but I had enough in-tight battles and stuff like that to test my hand in a game situation, and it felt really good. So I’m pretty happy with how it went.” Murray followed that up with 32 saves in a 5-0 shutout at San Jose on Nov. 5. The Penguins were totally dominant in that Stanley Cup Final rematch. Murray had stopped some shots in practice before returning to competitive action. But he was quick to acknowledge that game traffic is a lot heavier. “I felt a little shaky at the start, maybe,” Murray said after beating Anaheim. “I had a little trouble finding pucks through traffic, which is probably the last thing that’s going to come. “In practice, there are maybe one or two guys in your shot lane. But in a game, there’s five or six. So I felt a little bit shaky [handling] traffic, and that’s how that one [goal] got in. I couldn’t pick it up. There were a couple other times I got lucky and they missed the net. I need to be better with that, for sure.” When Murray is at his best, it’s impressive. The 22-year-old native of Thunder Bay, Ontario, was a third-round pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. His first full season of pro hockey was 2014-15, and it was amazing: Murray won the American Hockey League’s rookie of the year and best goaltender awards while leading the AHL in goals-against average (1.58) and save percentage (.941). Last season, Murray played 13 games for the Penguins and 31 for their AHL affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. He appeared locked into the Penguins’ backup role as the Stanley Cup playoffs approached. But starting netminder Marc-Andre Fleury got concussed not long before the post-season started. Murray missed the first two games of the first-round series against the New York Rangers because of injury. But once Murray skated into the blue paint, there was no stopping the Penguins. He went 15-6 with a 2.08 goals-against average and a .923 save percentage as the Penguins won the franchise’s fourth Stanley Cup. continued on page 79

Fleury played this season’s first nine games due to Murray’s injury. Now, with Murray back, the Penguins have the NHL’s top goaltending tandem. The Penguins validated their faith in Murray by giving him a three-year contract extension on Oct. 20. Murray would have been a restricted free agent at season’s end. “I think it’s good for Matt and good for the Penguins to get it done,” said GM Jim Rutherford. “It’s not something now that’s on his mind, being in a contract year. We’re very, very happy to have him in the fold.” Bones have healed. A contract has been signed. So now it’s time to stop the puck. The Ducks out-shot the Penguins 13-6 in the first period of Murray’s season debut. But Murray wasn’t fazed. “It doesn’t matter when the shots come, you’ve got to be ready,” Murray said. “That’s my job: To stop the puck. So I didn’t worry about when [the shots] came.” If his first two games are any indication, Murray will find his form quickly. “A big part of being a goalie is about timing, especially off the rush and off turnover chances, stuff like that,” Murray said after topping Anaheim. “It’s a slow progression. But I felt pretty good with it today, and better and better as the game went on. I thought I played pretty well in the third period. It was a good first game back.” Coach Mike Sullivan was happy after Murray’s debut: “He made some timely saves when he needed to for us. They had some flurries early in the game. When they got their shots, they got them in flurries. Sometimes those next saves off the rebound can be difficult. I thought Matt did a real good job.”
