The Series vs. Detroit On Dec. 3, the Penguins and Detroit Red Wings meet here for the first game between the teams this season. Pittsburgh swept the three-game series against Detroit last season, earning 5-2 and 7-2 road victories and a 6-3 home victory last Feb. 18. The Penguins outscored the Red Wings, 16-3, in the second and third periods of those games. . . Phil Kessel led Pittsburgh with eight points in the series last season, including three goals, while Kris Letang and Nick Bonino each had six points. . . Since the Penguins defeated the Red Wings in the 2009 Stanley Cup Final, Pittsburgh has gone 9-3-2 in 14 regular season games against Detroit. . . This game marks the Red Wingsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; 75th regular season game here in Pittsburgh, where the Penguins are 5-2-0 in their last seven games against them. . . Pittsburgh has had its problems on the power play when playing the Wings at home, where the Penguins are 3-for-47 (6.3 percent) over their last 14 meetings here. . . The teams next meet in Detroit on January 14, the Penguinsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; last game at Joe Louis Arena barring a playoff meeting between the teams. The Series vs. Ottawa On Dec. 5, the Penguins host the Ottawa Senators for the first time this season. The Penguins swept the Senators in their threegame series last season, earning 2-0 and 6-5 victories here and a 5-3 win in Ottawa. Sidney Crosby had a natural hat trick in the Penguinsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; home victory, a game which also saw him establish a career high by scoring a goal in his eighth straight home game . . . Pittsburgh is 9-1-2 in its last 12 regular season games against Ottawa, the only regulation loss in that span coming in Ottawa on Dec. 23, 2013 (0-5). . . The Penguins are 8-1-1 in their last 10 home games against the Senators, the only regulation loss coming on Jan. 10, 2012 (1-5). . . Pittsburgh has scored first in nine of its last 12 games against Ottawa. . . Crosby has 14 goals and 36 points in 32 career games against Ottawa, while Evgeni Malkin has 19 goals and 33 points in 31 games against the Senators. . . The Penguins Pittsburgh plays six of its first eight December games — and 10 of its 15 games this month — here at PPG Paints Arena. . . The Penguins were fourth in the NHL’s overall standings through 22 games and just five points off the pace of No. 1 Montreal. . . Helping them to get there was a dramatic 4-3 shootout victory here over New Jersey on Nov. 26, the first time in 24 years Pittsburgh rallied from a deficit after two periods to beat the Devils. Crosby scored the tying goal with Matt Murray pulled for an extra attacker with 14 seconds to play, and Kris Letang got the only goal of the shootout. Letang has more shootout goals (23) and shootout-deciding goals (13) than any defenseman in NHL history. . . Crosby’s goal gave him a league-high 15 in his first 16

games this season. . . Murray made 27 saves in that game and at that point was 14-0-0 in the last 14 regular season games he had started and finished. . . Defenseman Steve Oleksy made his Penguins debut in the win over New Jersey, picking up an assist as well. . . Jake Guentzel, who had two goals in his NHL debut Nov. 21 here against the Rangers, had three goals and four assists in his first four NHL games. . . Malkin had three assists in the win over New Jersey and joined Phil Kessel as the leading scorers for the Penguins with 21 points through 22 games. 8

What is your earliest memory of Penguins hockey? My earliest memory was my dad teaching me how to shoot a puck in the driveway, talking to me about how Mario would drop his shoulder or make certain moves to fake out the goaltender. I also remember my first hockey game was in Long Island, watching Paul Coffey score on the power play on a slapshot I could barely see!

What motivated you to become a season ticket holder? My dad moved back to Pittsburgh from Florida and we wanted to be able to share the games together. Aside from on-ice action, what do you enjoy most about attending Penguins games? I love the relationships I’ve built with some of the fans around me. There are some of us that have been together for a long time, and that “hockey family” is a big part of my life. What lesser known Penguins player (past or present) has left a lasting impression on you? What did he do to make that impression? Brooks Orpik isn’t really a lesser known player, but he was my favorite player from the post lockout teams. He did all the work that most fans don’t recognize — retrieving the puck, blocking shots, clearing the front of the net. I taught my son about how the most important jobs in hockey are usually the ones that don’t get recognized, but that is what defines a good teammate. My son has worn 44 in youth hockey because of how he learned those lessons from Orpik. continued on page 15

What is the most unique keepsake in your personal collection of Penguins memorabilia? My most unique piece is a button from the memorial service for Badger Bob. It has his trademark phrase on it, and I have worn it on my game hat ever since I got it. It’s always a great day for hockey. What has been your favorite off-ice Penguins event to attend and why? The Stanley Cup pictures in 2009. We waited in line for five plus hours, but four of those hours were inside the Igloo. The beer stands were open, and my hockey family and I enjoyed them. When we got to the Cup, we had 60 seconds to touch it, take pictures, whatever we wanted (no picking it up). Such a great experience and well worth the wait! What is your favorite memory from the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoff run? I have two (tied). The overtime goal by Bonino to eliminate the Capitals was the best moment at home. I thought the building was going to fall down. The other was flying to San Jose with my dad and brother and seeing the win in Game Six, and then hanging out with [Tom] Kuhnhackl’s dad afterwards and having a drink with him. In your eyes, what makes the Pittsburgh Penguins, or hockey in general, great? Penguins hockey is about speed, scoring, and excitement. We’ve been blessed with some of the greatest scorers in league history, and that makes every night at the rink one that holds potential for something special.

The NHL celebrated Founders Day on Nov. 26 in recognition of the National Hockey League being formed on Nov. 26, 1917 in Montreal, following the suspension of operations of the National Hockey Association of Canada Limited (NHA). The first NHL games were played on Dec. 19, 1917.

Kings C Jeff Carter scored in overtime to push Los Angeles past Chicago, 2-1, on Nov. 26. It was Carter’s leagueleading sixth game-winning goal of the season and it made him the first players in Kings’ history to score four game-winners in a span of five games.

The Coyotes earned at least a point for the 25th consecutive game against the Oilers (21-0-4) with a 2-1 win on Nov. 27.

Nov. 25 marked the conclusion of the first quarter of the 2016-17 campaign (312 games played of a scheduled 1,230, 25.37 percent). The first quarter featured 194 games (62.2 percent) that had either been tied or featured a one-goal margin entering the third period and 150 games (48.1 percent) that ended up being decided by one goal. Additionally, 132 games (42.3 percent) saw the winning team overcome a deficit at some point. In 31 of those, the winning team was able to mount a multi-goal comeback (10 teams by coming back from multi-goal deficits in the third period).

MARIO LEMIEUX Co-Owner/Chairman

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in the National Hockey League, added a new line to his Hall of Fame career last season: Two-time champion owner. The Penguins claimed the Cup for the second time since Lemieux and partner Ron Burkle bought the team out of bankruptcy in 1999. It gave him four Stanley Cups overall, including two as a player in 1991 and 1992. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice – including 10 straight playoff appearances and four conference final appearances in the past nine seasons, in addition to the two Cups. The Penguins entered the 2016-17 season having sold out every game for nineplus seasons while setting new standards for television ratings, corporate sales and social media. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open the arena in August, 2010. The facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. RON BURKLE Co-Owner

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing, technology and distribution industries, is in his 18th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports, leading the team to Stanley Cup championships in 2009 and 2016. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. It is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh, including NCAA basketball and hockey. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for nine-plus seasons and consistently ranked among the most fan-friendly and community-minded teams in the NHL and all of pro sports. The Penguins have earned 10 straight playoff berths and reached the conference finals four times in the past nine years, in addition to the two Stanley Cups. The team’s solid foundation of ownership has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign many of the team’s core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Stanley Cupchampion Penguins, overseeing all aspects of the team’s operation. The Penguins have become one of the NHL’s strongest business entities during his tenure– selling out every game for nine-plus seasons, setting new standards for television ratings and corporate sales and increasing their focus on innovative youth marketing. JIM RUTHERFORD Executive Vice President & General Manager

Jim Rutherford enters his third year as Penguins executive vice president and general manager fresh off the greatest season of his managerial career. During the course of the 2015-16 campaign, Rutherford transformed the Penguins into Stanley Cup champions, thanks in large part to his acquisitions of Phil Kessel, Nick Bonino, Trevor Daley and Carl Hagelin, plus the promotion of Mike Sullivan to head coach in December of 2015. When the Penguins defeated the San Jose Sharks to win the franchise’s fourth Stanley Cup on June 12, 2016, Rutherford became the first GM in the post-1967 Expansion Era to manage multiple teams to Cup victories, having also done so with Carolina in 2006. As a reward for quick, on-the-fly re-shaping of the Penguins’ roster, Rutherford won the NHL General Manager of the Year Award for his work in ’15-16. Rutherford spent the previous 20 years as GM of the Carolina Hurricanes/ Hartford Whalers franchise from 1994-2014, where he was a key architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team. In addition to his general manager duties, he also served 20 years as president of Carolina/Hartford, taking the post in 1994. In his role as president/GM, Rutherford oversaw operations on both the hockey and business sides of the organization. Over the course of his executive career, Rutherford has won multiple awards, including The Hockey News‘ Executive of the Year in 2002 and ’06. Additionally, he was voted by his NHL general management peers as Sporting News ‘Executive of the Year’ in 2006. Before his 22 years in the NHL, Rutherford was recognized as the 1987 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Executive of the Year, and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Executive of the Year in back-to-back years with the Windsor Spitfires in 1987 and ’88. He oversaw a Spitfires team that won the OHL championship in 1988 and earned a berth in the Memorial Cup. Rutherford played 13 years as a goaltender in the NHL, appearing in 457 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit. JASON BOTTERILL Associate General Manager

Jason Botterill enters this third season as associate general manager having assisted GM Jim Rutherford in making numerous personnel moves over the last year that resulted in the Penguins winning the Stanley Cup in 2016, the second championship Botterill has helped build during his tenure in Pittsburgh. As associate GM, Botterill advises Rutherford on all hockey-related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. During the summer of 2015, Botterill played a leading role in hiring Mike Sullivan as head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League. Following a hot start to the season with WB/S, Sullivan was eventually promoted to Pittsburgh and helped guide the Penguins to the Stanley Cup victory. In addition to his duties in Pittsburgh, Botterill serves as the GM of WB/S, which has made the playoffs all seven years he has overseen the team, including back-to-back berths in the Eastern Conference Final in 2013 and ‘14. Prior to his promotion, Botterill spent the previous five years as the Penguins assistant GM from 2009-14, and the two years prior to that as the team’s director of hockey administration beginning in 2007-08 where he was a key architect of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team. Botterill was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the first round (20th overall) in 1994 NHL Draft and played in 88 NHL games for Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo before his career was cut short due to injury. He also suited up for 393 career minor-league games in the American and International Hockey Leagues, tallying 257 career points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four years of college hockey at the University of Michigan and helped lead the Wolverines to an NCAA title in 1996. Botterill represented Canada in three straight World Junior Championships from 1994-96, winning gold medals all three years. Following his playing career, he received his MBA from his alma mater, the University of Michigan.

BILL GUERIN Assistant General Manager

Bill Guerin capped his second season as the Penguins assistant general manager by earning the first Stanley Cup championship of his executive career in 2015-16. Guerin’s responsibilities as assistant general manager include serving as a liaison between the players and management. Guerin was Pittsburgh’s player development coach from 2011-14, where he was instrumental in helping develop the Penguins’ minor league, junior and college prospects, including Tom Kuhnhackl, Bryan Rust and Conor Sheary, who all played huge roles in the 2016 championship run. Originally drafted by New Jersey in the first round (5th overall) of the 1989 NHL Draft, Guerin won two Stanley Cups (Pittsburgh, 2009; New Jersey, 1995) and spent 18 seasons in the NHL — including his final two with the Penguins. Guerin’s leadership and on-ice performance after being acquired at the NHL trade deadline was a key in Pittsburgh’s ’09 title. Guerin, a four-time NHL All-Star, tallied 429 career goals and 856 points in 1,263 career NHL games, including five 30-goal and two 40-goal seasons. He was elected to the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 2013.

JASON KARMANOS Vice President Of Hockey Operations

Jason Karmanos begins his third season as the Penguins vice president of hockey operations having won the Stanley Cup for the second time in his executive career, after originally winning a championship with Carolina in 2006. Karmanos assists GM Jim Rutherford in all aspects of hockey operations as one of the leaders in the Penguins’ implementation of advance statistics and analysis. Before joining Pittsburgh, Karmanos spent 15 years as an executive for the Carolina Hurricanes from 1998-2013, serving various roles with Carolina, including executive director of hockey operations and vice president/assistant general manager under Rutherford. Karmanos played four years of college hockey at Harvard University from 199296, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors. In 1994, Karmanos represented Team USA at the World Junior Championships, compiling three points (1G-2A) in seven games. After graduating, Karmanos attended training camp with the Penguins in 1996 and played pro hockey for two seasons before his career was cut short due to an eye injury.

MIKE SULLIVAN Head Coach

Mike Sullivan led the Penguins to one of the greatest in-season turnarounds in franchise history during his first year as head coach in 2015-16, a journey that resulted in a Stanley Cup victory against the San Jose Sharks on June 12, 2016. Adhering to Sullivan’s advice to ‘Just Play’, the Penguins ended the regular season with the secondbest record in the Eastern Conference and fourth-best mark in the league, in large part because of a 14-2 run to conclude the regular season. By leading the Penguins to the franchise’s fourth Cup, Sullivan became just the sixth American-born head coach to win the Stanley Cup. Prior to being promoted to Pittsburgh, Sullivan spent the first two-plus months of the 2015-16 season as the head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins. During his 23-game tenure in WB/S, his club went 18-5, which was good enough for first place in the Atlantic Division. Sullivan’s club also had a franchise-best 11-game winning streak. A native of Marshfield, Massachusetts, Sullivan began his coaching career in 2002-03, starting the season as head coach of the AHL’s Providence Bruins before joining the NHL’s Bruins as an assistant coach late in the year. He was promoted to head coach of the NHL Bruins at age 35 in 2003-04, winning a Northeast Division crown in the first of his two years at the helm. Sullivan served as an NHL assistant coach for seven-consecutive years from 2007-14 with Tampa Bay, the NY Rangers and Vancouver. In addition to his professional coaching experience, Sullivan has coached the United States three times internationally, including the 2016 World Cup of Hockey when he was an assistant coach. He was the head coach at the 2007 World Championship and an assistant coach at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turino, Italy. During the 2014-15 season, Sullivan was a member of the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks player development staff. Sullivan’s 11-year NHL career began with the expansion San Jose Sharks in 1991-92 and included stops in Calgary, Boston and Arizona. Sullivan played four years of collegiate hockey at Boston University from 1986-90, serving as the Terriers captain as a senior. RICK TOCCHET Assistant Coach

Rick Tocchet is in his third season as an assistant coach of the Penguins. In his current role, Tocchet works closely with the team’s speedy and dynamic forward group, which had eight players reach double figures in points during the 2016 playoffs, a key reason Pittsburgh was able to win the franchise’s fourth Stanley Cup, the first Cup win of Tocchet’s coaching career. Tocchet was hired as an assistant coach by Tampa Bay in July, 2008 and was elevated to interim head coach on Nov. 14 of that year. He was named head coach following the ‘08-09 season, where he remained in that position until 2010. Tocchet began his coaching career as an assistant with the Colorado Avalanche for two years (2002-04) before spending one season (‘05-06) with the Phoenix Coyotes. A veteran of 18 NHL seasons, including parts of three seasons with the Penguins from 1992-94, Tocchet won a Stanley Cup championship with Pittsburgh in 1992. The four-time NHL All-Star (1989, ‘90, ‘91, ‘93) played 1,144 career NHL games and totaled 440 goals, 952 points and 2,972 penalty minutes in his NHL career. Tocchet was originally drafted by Philadelphia in the sixth round (125th overall) of the 1983 NHL Draft.

JACQUES MARTIN Assistant Coach

Jacques Martin stepped back behind the Penguins’ bench for a second tour of duty as an assistant coach in December 2015, playing a crucial role in the team’s Stanley Cup win, the first championship of Martin’s lengthy NHL career. Martin, who enters his fourth season in the Pittsburgh organization, presides over the Penguins’ defensemen and penalty killing unit in his current role. He was instrumental in Kris Letang hitting career highs in all offensive categories in 2015-16. Martin’s PK unit finished with the fifth-best success rate in the NHL. Martin has over 25 years of NHL experience as a general manager, head coach and assistant coach with Pittsburgh, Montreal, Florida, Ottawa, Colorado/Quebec, Chicago and St. Louis. He won 613 games and made 12 playoff appearances in 17 seasons as an NHL head coach. He won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s ‘most outstanding coach’ with Ottawa in 1999 and was a finalist for the award on three other occasions. Martin won gold medals as an assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2002 Olympics and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. He was also an assistant coach on the 2006 Canadian Olympic Team.

MIKE BALES Goaltending Coach Mike Bales has established himself as one of the NHL’s top goaltending coaches during his first three seasons with the team. During the Penguins’ 2016 Stanley Cup championship drive, Pittsburgh used three goaltenders who thrived under his tutelage, including rookie Matt Murray, whose 15 playoff wins equaled the NHL rookie record. Under Bales’ guidance, Marc-Andre Fleury has compiled two of the finest seasons of his career. During the 2014-15 campaign, Fleury established a franchise record with 10 shutouts, a figure that led the entire NHL. Bales began his Penguins’ career as the team’s goaltending development coach from 2011-13. Bales, a native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, spent 18 seasons playing professionally from 1992-2010, including stints in the NHL with Boston and Ottawa. Bales also saw action with teams in the AHL, IHL, Germany, Sweden and Northern Ireland. He was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the fifth round (105th overall) of the 1990 NHL Draft. Before turning pro, Bales played three collegiate seasons with Ohio State University of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) from 1989-92. TRAVIS WILLIAMS Chief Operating Officer Travis Williams is in his ninth season as a senior executive with the Penguins, currently serving as Chief Operating Officer and overseeing finance, legal affairs, technology, business development and arena operations. He also assists CEO David Morehouse in the day-to-day management of the business. In addition, Williams serves as the Penguins’ point man on the development of the former Civic Arena site and oversaw the construction of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry. Williams joined the Penguins in 2008 as Senior Vice President of Business Affairs/ General Counsel. One of his first responsibilities was to guide the construction and development of the new arena — bringing the project to completion on time and under budget. He now serves as the team’s liaison with building manager AEG Facilities, working closely with AEG on all arena-related events, including major concerts and national-level sporting events. Previously, Williams had been a partner at Reed Smith LLP, where he specialized in mergers and acquisitions, investment management, commercial lending and general corporate matters. SCHULTZ CONTINUES CAREER

Last February, the Pittsburgh Penguins bought low on one-time phenom Justin Schultz, acquiring the smooth-skating blueliner from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for a 2016 third-round pick. The move was seen by many as a low-risk, high-reward addition by general manager Jim Rutherford. Nine months later, the Penguins continue to reap the rewards of adding Schultz. By now, everybody knows how effortlessly Schultz fit into Pittsburgh’s lineup during the stretch run, and then during the final two rounds of the playoffs, when he seamlessly replaced Trevor Daley as the Penguins marched to a Stanley Cup win. The performance of Schultz during that three-month period would have been enough to consider the deal with Edmonton a rousing success. This season, Schultz, very quietly and steadily, continues to swing that pendulum even further into Pittsburgh’s favor. While his offensive totals haven’t quite matched what Schultz produced last year, both the eye test and some defensive metrics show a player much more refined in his overall game than at any previous point in his career. Through the first 22 games of the season, Schultz produced five assists, but more impressively, he had been a plus or even player in 19 of his first 22 games, including 15 of his past continued on page 66

His plus-6 might not knock your socks off, but it was tied for the team lead among blueliners with Olli Maatta, and only Conor Sheary (plus-7) had a higher total among all Pittsburgh players. In 40 regular-season games since joining the Penguins, Schultz is a plus-13; compared to a minus-78 total in 248 contests with Edmonton from 2013-16. For the most part during his Pittsburgh tenure, Schultz has been a mainstay on the third pairing, but his solid work in his own zone earned him a spot in the club’s top-four during a 4-3 shootout victory over New Jersey on November 26. That night, Schultz slid up to partner with Trevor Daley in place of Brian Dumoulin, who was given a night off to “hit the reset button” according to head coach Mike Sullivan. Sullivan added following that game that he’s able to make decisions like bumping up Schultz and re-arranging the forward units because Pittsburgh’s depth includes a lineup littered with skaters capable of helping in any role. “When we make those kinds of decisions, we hope they’ll be productive and help us win,” Sullivan said. That’s all Schultz has done in a black-and-gold sweater, be productive and help his team win. He’s played a combined 55 regular-season and postseason contests here, and the Penguins have won 38 of them (69 percent). Between those numbers and the Stanley Cup win in June, I’d say Schultz is more than doing his part to maintain the Penguins continue along their winning ways.

PITTSBURGH STYLE The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite girls played host to this past weekends Thanksgiving Classic presented by DICKâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S Sporting Goods. This tournament is set-up so that top-level teams from the US and Canada are able to compete against one another. The games were played at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, as well as, the Robert Morris University Island Sports Center and the Baierl Ice Complex. The Penguins Elite teams showed extremely well, proving that the game of hockey in Pittsburgh is continuing to grow. The Penguins had seven teams that were involved in this tournament ranging from U10 up to U19. The U10 girls are still in the process of learning the ins and outs of hockey, which is perfect because the Thanksgiving Classic allows for great development. The girls put up a great fight in this tournament, battling some of the top teams in North America. The U12 and U14 Penguins Elite girls also played very well, making it to the championship games. Unfortunately, they each fell in the final games, but provided great competition for the other teams participating. Every game in each of these two divisions was played to the final whistle. The girls laid it all on the line and competed to the end. Even though it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t the result they wanted, they became a better overall team and will certainly learn from these experiences. The U16 Penguins Elite girls were crowned champions in the tier one bracket, while showing their dominance with 30 goals for and only six goals against in five games played. During the semi-final and final games, they proved that they were the best team in the division. They beat the Exton Elite squad in the semis 7-2 and owned the final game 4-0 against a very strong Selects Academy squad. The U19 girls came up just short in the semi-final game, after showing that they are a solid all-around team. They provided each other with a will and determination that is second to none. This team has been here before, so they know exactly what they need to accomplish during the coming weeks in preparation for their next games.

Eric Fehr is a man of many trades. Not only is the 31-year-old a forward for the Pittsburgh Penguins; he’s also a father, a co-author, a former rival, and a Stanley Cup Champion. Fehr was chosen 18th overall in the 2003 NHL Draft by Washington, playing nine years for the Capitals over two stints. At the end of the 2014-15 season, Fehr became a free agent — signing a threeyear contract with Pittsburgh and crossing enemy lines. “It wasn’t an easy decision to make,” Fehr said. “I’ve been on the other side of that rivalry for a lot of years and there’s been some big battles and heated competition, but playing against this team I knew what the Penguins were capable of and thought it would be a good opportunity for me to join them.” As a member of the Penguins, the Winkler, Manitoba native scored 14 points during the 2015-16 regular season and came through with three clutch goals in the Stanley Cup playoffs, including the game-winner against his former team in Game Two of the second round. “It felt really good,” Fehr smiled. “I was really nervous for that series. You want to win that one. It meant a lot to me to get through that series. Just to be a part of it, it’s something I’ll never forget. A lot of it is because how good the hockey was, but also because of how badly you want to win it and the nerves that come into play.” Nerves aside, Fehr and the Penguins made it past the Capitals and took down the Tampa Bay Lightning, before finally defeating the San Jose Sharks to bring the Stanley Cup back to Pittsburgh. “I didn’t have a whole lot of time to think and when it came to me I was just thinking, ‘I hope it’s not too heavy to throw over my head,’” Fehr laughed, remembering Phil Kessel handing him the Cup. “When I got it and got to do the little skate with it, it was pretty special. It was a lot of years of hard work paying off in one moment.” While Fehr may have lifted the Stanley Cup effortlessly, a family picture with trophy didn’t go quite as smoothly. About 30 seconds after placing his daughter Elle into the Cup, she began to cry. “That one is on me,” Fehr said. “I took off her headphones when she went into the Cup and she got scared with all the noise. She was probably happy for 18 and a half hours in the day and for the 30 seconds she was crying they caught it on national television. Fehr is trying to carry the momentum from his playoff explosion into the 2016-17 season. As of Nov. 28, Fehr had two goals and two assists, including the game-winner on Oct. 25 against Florida. However, the forward is still looking to improve — particularly on his penalty killing abilities. “We take a lot of pride in our penalty kill,” Fehr said. “We want to be at the top of the league in our penalty kill and that’s definitely something I try to specialize in. That’s something I take a lot of pride in and something I want to improve on.” Another aspect of Fehr’s game he wants to improve is something his father tried to make a top priority growing up. “My dad always made me do a couple laps around the rink before I was allowed to touch the puck,” Fehr said. “That’s something I will always remember. He always wanted us to be working on our skating abilities. He probably should’ve made me do more laps, because skating isn’t my strong suit. He definitely had good intentions.” As Fehr focuses on his hockey career, his idea for a second children’s book remains on the backburner. “It takes a lot of time and effort to write a book and everything that comes with it,” Fehr said of writing a sequel to his 2014 book, The Bulliest Dozer. “Writing a book and getting it published is tough enough in itself, but then you have a lot of appearances that come with it. I really want to, but we’ll see if I have time for it.” The plot for his second book remains a mystery, but Fehr was willing to give out some vague details. “It’s the same characters, but a different main character,” Fehr said with a smile. While Fehr has worn many hats throughout his 11-year career in the NHL, he is now relishing in being a Penguin and calling Pittsburgh home. “It’s been awesome,” Fehr said of his time in Pittsburgh thus far. “It’s been a great experience for me, I can’t say enough about how friendly everyone is. It feels a lot like back home. Nobody seems to be in a hurry, the people are very friendly and they even let you into lanes when you’re driving. I think that stands out to me the most, just how friendly everyone is and it helps me make Pittsburgh home.” 79
