KID CANES: Through 33 games the Hurricanes had gotten 60.7 percent of their goals (48 of 79) from players 23-years of age or younger. LW Jeff Skinner (23) had a team-leading 14 goals and D Justin Faulk (23) was second with 12. Skinner’s total included a pair of hat tricks that upped his career total of three-goal games to four, third in Carolina history.

All 12 of Faulk’s goals had been scored on the power play, the first time in NHL history that a player’s first 12 goals of a season had been man-advantage tallies.
CAPITAL GAINS: Washington G Braden Holtby’s 7-3 victory over the Rangers on Dec. 20 was his NHLleading 21st of the season and improved Holtby to 13-0-1

over his last 15 games with a 1.91 goals-against average and a .938 save percentage. Holtby reached the 20-win mark on Dec. 16 and in doing so became the first Capitals’ goalie to make it to the 20-win plateau in a season before any other NHL netminder since Al Jensen in 1983-84.
WILD DECEMBER:
posted a franchise-best record of 24-7-2 through 33 games thanks in part to an NHL-high 113 goals. The Stars were leading the NHL in points (50), wins (24), goals-per-game average (3.42) and empty-net goals (11), and were leading the Western Conference with six short-handed goals (tied for third overall) through 33 games.
PAYING THE PRICE: The Flyers were second in the NHL in hits (1,008) and seventh in blocked shots (499) while posting a 14-12-7 record through their first 33 games.

Minnesota hosted Dallas on Dec. 21 with an NHLleading six shutouts after a run of three in eight games. The Wild were tied for the league lead with 12 goals against in the month of December at that juncture, and had allowed just 10 goals in regulation in 27 regulation periods.

THE SERIES [VS] MAPLE LEAFS
Tonight the Penguins face the Toronto Maple Leafs for the third and final time this season. Pittsburgh has won both previous games: 2-1 here on Oct. 17 behind goals 39 seconds apart by Evgeni Malkin and Olli Maatta and 26 saves by Marc-Andre Fleury, and 4-0 on Oct. 31 in Toronto as Fleury made 21 saves for the shutout. Eric Fehr and Matt Cullen scored their first goals in a Pittsburgh uniform in the Oct. 31 game, which was the first for Fehr this season after off-season elbow surgery. It was also the first of two short-handed goals Fehr would score in as many games. . . The Penguins have won seven consecutive games against the Maple Leafs, their longest win streak ever against Toronto. Pittsburgh’s last loss to the Leafs came in Toronto on Oct. 26, 2013 (1-4). The last time the Penguins lost consecutive games in regulation to Toronto was Jan. 31 and Feb. 14, 2009, the latter being the final game behind the Pittsburgh bench for Michel Therrien. . . Fleury’s injury paved the way for Matt Murray to make his first NHL start in a 2-1 home loss to Carolina on Dec. 19 and earn his first NHL victory Dec. 21 in the 5-2 win over Columbus. DO YOU REMEMBER WHERE YOU WERE WHEN THE PENGUINS WON THE CUP IN ‘91, ‘92 OR ‘09? In ’91, I was in Oban, Scotland on a motorcycle tour. In ’92, I was ready to head to the airport when I heard it was closed off. I was not happy. In ’09, I did not go to Detroit and I’ve never forgiven myself. I’ve even seen the Cup lifted by the Devils in New Jersey, but not by the Penguins. WHICH TEAM/ARENA WOULD YOU LIKE TO VISIT FOR A PENGUINS GAME AND WHY? Any of the original six arenas. I’ve been to Chicago Stadium, the Olympia and Maple Leaf Gardens. Montreal has to be the place for hockey though. IN YOUR EYES, WHAT MAKES THE PITTSBURGH PENGUINS, OR HOCKEY IN GENERAL, GREAT? We moved to Pittsburgh in 1973, one of the big reasons was NHL hockey. Hockey, at any level, is the best game ever — speed, collisions and team play. I was lucky enough to play on one championship team in our “Over 40” league. It really brought home just how important “TEAM” is to this glorious game.

For twenty-three seasons, the Pittsburgh Penguins have honored high school hockey players from the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League with Player of the Month awards. The PIHL Players of the Month for December were Sean Weber of West Allegheny High School and Cole Stayduhar of Shaler Area High School. Sean Weber, a senior forward for the West Allegheny Indians, had nine goals and eight assists in just five games. Weber scored the gamewinning goal in overtime against Montour on Nov. 2 in a matchup of undefeated teams. Weber also had four three-point games in a row to start the month and five points in the final game of November. The West Allegheny Indians are currently leading the Western Conference in the Varsity A division with an undefeated record of 11-0. Cole Stayduhar, a senior forward for the Shaler Area Titans, is described as a team leader through his work ethic and character. He had five goals and four assists in three games. Stayduhar had a hat trick, two assists, and two power play goals in an 8-6 win over Pine-Richland on November 16. He is currently amongst the top five scorers in the Varsity AAA division in the PIHL. The last time Trevor Daley was traded, it wasn’t a smooth transition. Last season, Daley had 16 goals and 22 assists for Dallas. His average ice time was 22:52. He was a major player for the Stars. Then the 5-foot-11, 195-pound defenseman was swapped to defending Stanley Cup champ Chicago. His role diminished and his ice time plummeted: Just 14:45 on average. No goals and six assists in 29 games. The Blackhawks are caked with top-flight defensemen, namely Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook and Niklas Hjalmarsson. Said Daley, “I don’t know that I got the opportunity to even know that I couldn’t fit into the system.” Better luck in Pittsburgh. Daley was traded to the Penguins in exchange for defenseman Rob Scuderi on Dec. 14. “I kind of knew something was going to happen pretty soon,” said Daley upon arrival. “I want to say I was prepared for it, but I don’t think you’re ever prepared for it. When you do get the call, you’re like, ‘OK. Now what do I do?’ “But I was excited. I’ve got a family back in Chicago. I leave that stuff to the wife, and I just come and play hockey.” Daley made his Penguins debut in a 3-0 loss at Boston on Dec. 16. He had a goal and an assist in his first three games with Pittsburgh, netting his first goal as a Penguin in a 6-2 home loss to Boston on Dec. 18. Daley shoots left. He has good mobility and puck skills, and is comfortable playing on either side. Daley should be a good fit for the Penguins. “They want to get the puck up the ice as soon as possible. Most teams are like that,” Daley said. “[In Chicago], the defensemen were always up in the play and joining the attack. You need as many guys in the offense as possible, to try to score, and vice-versa: You need everyone in the defensive zone to help out. “I hope to be involved at both ends of the ice: Good offensively, and good defensively.” Daley, 32, admitted he doesn’t “know too much about the [Eastern Conference]. It’s my first time in the East.” But he hopes for a quick, smooth transition. “You don’t want it to take too long,” Daley said. “Try to make it as quick as possible. I’m obviously pretty excited to be here, and a lot of these guys are excited to have some new faces around here. continued on page 31

“It’s kind of a fresh start. I know [Sidney Crosby] a little bit. But it’s so easy. The day you show up in a hockey dressing room, you have 22 new friends. The guys have been great.” The Penguins want what Daley does. Said GM Jim Rutherford, “We like Trevor because he can skate and move the puck. That’s something we’ve talked about trying to improve, our back end. He can certainly do that.” Daley hopes to “just go out and play [my] game. Have some fun. Sometimes you forget how much fun it is out there. We get to play hockey for a living. That’s pretty cool.” Daley spent 11 seasons with Dallas, making his NHL debut in 2003-04. He had 67 goals and 164 assists in 756 games with the Stars. He set career highs in both goals and assists last season, his final campaign with Dallas. Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, has been co-owner of the Penguins since 1999. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including nine straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past eight years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open CONSOL Energy Center in August, 2010. The facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in technology, retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, has been co-owner of the Penguins for 16 years. David Morehouse is chief executive officer and president of the Penguins, overseeing all aspects of the team’s operation. The Penguins have become one of the NHL’s strongest business entities during his tenure — selling out every game for eight-plus seasons, setting new standards for corporate sales and television ratings and increasing their focus on innovative youth marketing. Morehouse joined the team as a consultant on the arena project in 2004 and was named team president in April 2007. He was given the additional responsibilities of chief executive officer in August 2010. Under his leadership, the Penguins have reshaped their strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, community interaction, corporate outreach and cutting-edge technology. Beyond that, the Penguins have led all U.S.-based NHL teams in local television ratings for six-straight seasons and rank among the league leaders in social media followers, website traffic and merchandise sales. Jim Rutherford is in his second season as executive vice president and general manager of the Penguins. During his first year, the Penguins qualified for their ninth-consecutive postseason berth despite playing a majority of the final two months without arguably the team’s top-three defensemen. Rutherford spent the previous 20 years as GM of the Carolina Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers franchise from 1994-2014 where he was a key architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team. In addition to his general manager duties, he also served 20 years as president of Carolina/Hartford, taking the post in 1994. In his role as president/GM, Rutherford oversaw operations on both the hockey and business sides of the organization. He helped spearhead the efforts to bring the 2004 NHL Draft and 2011 NHL All-Star Game to Raleigh. Over the course of his executive career, Rutherford has won multiple awards, including The Hockey News‘ Executive of the Year in 2002 and ’06. Additionally, he was voted by his NHL general management peers as Sporting News Executive of the Year in 2006. Before his 21 years in the NHL, Rutherford was recognized as the 1987 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Executive of the Year, and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Executive of the Year in back-to-back years with the Windsor Spitfires in 1987 and ’88. He oversaw a Spitfires team that won the OHL championship in 1988 and earned a berth in the Memorial Cup. In addition to his time with Hartford/Carolina, Rutherford also spent over 30 years working with Compuware Sports Corporation, overseeing the purchase of Windsor in 1984 and bringing the first American-based OHL franchise to Detroit in 1989. Rutherford played 13 years as a goaltender in the NHL, appearing in 457 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit. Selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round (10th overall) in the 1969 NHL Draft, he represented Canada at the 1977 and ’79 World Championships.

Jason Botterill is in his second season as associate general manager after being promoted from assistant general manager on June 6, 2014. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 39, spent the previous five years as the Penguins assistant GM from 2009-14, and the two years prior to that as the team’s director of hockey administration beginning in 2007-08 where he was a key architect of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team. Before joining the Penguins, Botterill worked for NHL Central Registry and as a scout for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the first round (20th overall) in 1994 NHL Draft and played in 88 NHL games for Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo before his career was cut short due to injury. He also suited up for 393 career minor-league games in the American and International Hockey Leagues, tallying 257 career points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four years of college hockey at the University of Michigan and helped lead the Wolverines to an NCAA title in 1996. Botterill represented Canada in three straight World Junior Championships from 1994-96, winning gold medals all three years. Following his playing career, he received his MBA from his alma mater, the University of Michigan.

BILL GUERIN ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER
Bill Guerin is in his second season as assistant general manager after serving as Pittsburgh’s player development coach from 2011-14. Guerin’s responsibilities as assistant general manager include serving as a liaison between the players and management. As the Penguins’ player development coach, Guerin was instrumental in helping develop the Penguins’ minor league, junior and college prospects. Originally drafted by New Jersey in the first round (5th overall) of the 1989 NHL Draft, Guerin won two Stanley Cups (Pittsburgh, 2009; New Jersey, 1995) and spent 18 seasons in the NHL — including his final two with the Penguins. Guerin’s leadership and on-ice performance after being acquired at the NHL trade deadline was a key in Pittsburgh’s ’09 title. Guerin, a four-time NHL All-Star, tallied 429 career goals and 856 points in 1,263 career NHL games, including five 30-goal and two 40goal seasons. Karmanos assists GM Jim Rutherford in all aspects of hockey operations. Before joining Pittsburgh, Karmanos spent 15 years as an executive for the Carolina Hurricanes from 1998-2013, serving various roles with Carolina, including executive director of hockey operations and vice president/assistant general manager under Rutherford. Karmanos played four years of college hockey at Harvard University from 1992-96, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors. In 1994, Karmanos represented Team USA at the World Junior Championships, compiling three points (1G-2A) in seven games. After graduating, Karmanos attended training camp with the Penguins in 1996 and played pro hockey for two seasons before his career was cut short due to an eye injury. MIKE SULLIVAN HEAD COACH
Mike Sullivan was named the 22nd head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins on Dec. 12, 2015. Prior to being promoted to Pittsburgh, Sullivan, 47, spent the first two-plus months of the 2015-16 season as the head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. During his 23-game tenure in WB/S, his club went 18-5, which was good enough for first place in the Atlantic Division. Sullivan’s club also had a franchise-best 11-game winning streak. Sullivan has 13 years of coaching experience at the professional level. He served two seasons as the Boston Bruins head coach from 2003-06. Sullivan also spent 11 years as an NHL player from 1991-2002. A native of Marshfield, Massachusetts, Sullivan began his coaching career in 2002-03, starting the season as head coach of the AHL’s Providence Bruins before joining the NHL’s Bruins as an assistant coach late in the year. He was promoted to head coach of the NHL Bruins at age 35 in 2003-04, winning a Northeast Division crown in the first of his two years at the helm. As the head coach in Providence, Sullivan compiled a record of 41-17-9-4 (.669 pct.) in 71 games before his promotion to Boston. Sullivan served as an NHL assistant coach for seven-consecutive years from 2007-14 with Tampa Bay, the NY Rangers and Vancouver. In addition to his professional coaching experience, Sullivan has twice coached the United States internationally. He was the head coach at the 2007 World Championship and an assistant coach at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turino, Italy. During the 2014-15 season, Sullivan was a member of the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks player development staff. Sullivan’s 11-year NHL career began with the expansion San Jose Sharks in 1991-92 and included stops in Calgary, Boston and Arizona. A penalty-kill specialist, Sullivan recorded 54 goals (16 shorthanded) and 136 points in 709 NHL games. Sullivan was drafted by the New York Rangers in the fourth round (69th overall) of the 1987 NHL Draft. He played four years of collegiate hockey at Boston University from 1986-90, serving as the Terriers captain as a senior. RICH TOCCHET ASSISTANT COACH
Rick Tocchet is in his second season as an assistant coach of the Penguins. In his current role, Tocchet works closely with the team’s forwards. Tocchet was hired as an assistant coach by Tampa Bay in July, 2008 and was elevated to interim head coach on Nov. 14 of that year. He was named head coach following the ‘08-09 season, where he remained in that position until 2010. Tocchet began his coaching career as an assistant with the Colorado Avalanche for two years (2002-04) before spending one season (‘05-06) with the Phoenix Coyotes. A veteran of 18 NHL seasons, including parts of three seasons with the Penguins from 1992-94, Tocchet won a Stanley Cup championship with Pittsburgh in 1992. The four-time NHL All-Star (1989, ‘90, ‘91, ‘93) played 1,144 career NHL games and totaled 440 goals, 952 points and 2,972 penalty minutes in his NHL career. Tocchet was originally drafted by Philadelphia in the sixth round (125th overall) of the 1983 NHL Draft.
JACQUES MARTIN ASSISTANT COACH
Assistant coach Jacques Martin enters his third season in the Penguins organization. In his current role, he oversees the club’s defensemen and its penalty killing unit. Martin spent last year as a senior advisor to Penguins GM Jim Rutherford, and the season before that as an assistant coach. Martin has over 25 years of NHL experience as a general manager, head coach and assistant coach with Pittsburgh, Montreal, Florida, Ottawa, Colorado/Quebec, Chicago and St. Louis. He won 613 games and made 12 playoff appearances in 17 seasons as an NHL head coach. He won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s ‘most outstanding coach’ with Ottawa in 1999 and was a finalist for the award on three other occasions. Martin won gold medals as an assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2002 Olympics and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. He was also an assistant coach on the 2006 Canadian Olympic Team.

MIKE BALES GOALTENDING COACH
Mike Bales is in his third season as the Penguins goaltending coach after serving the previous two seasons as the team’s goaltending development coach from 2011-13. Under his guidance, Marc-Andre Fleury has compiled two of the finest seasons of his career. During the 2014-15 campaign, Fleury established a franchise record with 10 shutouts, a figure that led the entire NHL. When he was in his role as goaltending development coach, Bales helped lead the scouting efforts that led to Pittsburgh choosing reigning AHL Goaltender of the Year Matt Murray and 2013 second-round pick Tristan Jarry. Bales, a native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, spent 18 seasons playing professionally from 1992-2010, including stints in the NHL with Boston and Ottawa. Bales also saw action with teams in the AHL, IHL, Germany, Sweden and Northern Ireland. He was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the fifth round (105th overall) of the 1990 NHL Draft. Before turning pro, Bales played three collegiate seasons with Ohio State University of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) from 1989-92. Travis Williams is in his eighth season as a senior executive with the Pittsburgh Penguins, currently serving as chief operating officer and overseeing finance, legal affairs, technology, business development and arena operations. He also assists CEO David Morehouse in the day-to-day management of the business. In addition, Williams serves as the Penguins’ point man on the development of the former Civic Arena site and oversaw the construction of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry. Williams joined the Penguins in 2008 as senior vice president of business affairs/legal counsel. One of his first responsibilities was to guide the construction and development of the team’s new arena, CONSOL Energy Center — which was completed on time and under budget. He now serves as the team’s liaison with building manager AEG Facilities, working closely with AEG on all arena-related events, including major concerts and national-level sporting events. Previously, Williams has been a partner at Reed Smith LLP, where he specialized in mergers and acquisitions, investment management, commercial lending and general corporate matters. During his 12 years at Reed Smith, Williams also represented several sports franchises, regional sports networks and other sports-related businesses. A native of Indianapolis, he graduated from Penn State and received a Juris Doctorate from Duquesne University, summa cum laude. While at Duquesne, he was a member of the Duquesne Law Review and the Duquesne Business Law Journal.

Terry Kalna is in his first season as senior vice president of sales and broadcasting following an 18-year career in motorsports management. Kalna, 39, a native of Greensburg, oversees corporate sales, partnership activation, ticket sales and premium sales in addition to the Penguins Radio Network. He also is the primary contact with ROOT SPORTS, the Penguins’ local television rightsholder. Kalna spent the previous eight years as managing director of International Speedway Corporation, a sister company to NASCAR that operates 13 racetracks across the country — including Daytona, Talladega, Darlington and Richmond. Kalna also has deep connections to hockey. He has been a member of USA Hockey’s Marketing Council since 2011 and recently earned his USA Hockey Level 5 coaching certification. He played youth hockey in Greensburg and for the Amateur Penguins before moving on to prep school hockey at Tabor Academy and Cranbrook Kingswood School. He graduated from Hobart College in 1998 with degrees in economics and history.

During all Penguins home games, the 3 FOR $5 Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation will host 10 FOR $10 a 50/50 RAFFLE. From the raffle, one lucky fan will go home with 50 percent of 40 FOR $20 the night’s collection. The remainder of the proceeds will be distributed to local 501c3 charities through a grant process. During the 2014-15 Penguins season, the Foundation donated more than $760,000 to over 80 local 501c3 charities with the funds raised from the 50/50 RAFFLE. PENGUINS AND US MARINE CORPS SUPPORT
TOYS FOR TOTS
The Penguins organization held its annual Toys for Tots toy collection prior to the team’s home games on Friday, December 11 and Monday, December 14. Penguins Booster Club members and the Central Catholic High School Inline Hockey team worked alongside members of the Marine Corps, collecting new unwrapped toys and cash donations that the Marines used to purchase toys for underprivileged children in the Pittsburgh region. In addition to the game day collections, the Penguins Foundation teamed up with 96.1 KISS Radio’s Stuff A Bus program by holding an online Toys for Tots donation opportunity for fans. The online program generated more than $18,000 for the Penguins’ overall Toys for Tots effort this season. The game day toy collection has been a team tradition since 1992. All fans who made a donation at the games were eligible to win autographed Penguins prizes. Over the past decade, Penguins fans have donated over 18,300 toys and $81,000 at the Penguins annual toy drives, making the holiday brighter for so many local children and their families.

PITTSBURGH TO HOST WORLD’S BEST HOCKEY TALENT IN
WORLD CUP DOUBLE-HEADER By Sam Kasan
Imagine this: A sold out CONSOL Energy Center cheering loudly next September as the opening faceoff is taken between Sidney Crosby…and Evgeni Malkin. That’s a serious possibility as Pittsburgh was selected as one of a chosen few cities by the NHL and NHLPA to host practices and exhibition games for next year’s World Cup of Hockey. The games will feature a double header of Canada-Russia at 7:30PM and North America-Czech Republic at 3:30PM at CONSOL Energy Center on Wednesday, Sept. 14. The best talent in the world will be showcased in Pittsburgh. Canada has won the gold medal in the last two Olympic Games (2010 in Vancouver, 2014 in Sochi). Russia features some of the best players in the game with Malkin and Alex Ovechkin. The ageless Jaromir Jagr could suit up for Czech Republic. And next generational talents Connor McDavid and Jack Eichel will likely represent North America. All four teams will spend the week in Pittsburgh with two practicing at CONSOL Energy Center and the other two at the new state-ofthe-art UPMC Sports Complex in Cranberry. The teams will arrive on Monday, practice Monday and Tuesday and play the double-header on Wednesday. All four teams will hold a final practice on Thursday before heading to the opening ceremonies in Toronto. All NHL markets were able to bid to host training camp or an exhibition game or a pre-competition camps. The Penguins are hoping to have some ancillary events surrounding the games and practices, though plans have yet to be finalized. The World Cup of Hockey will be held in Toronto with eight teams competing for the international hockey championships — Canada, Czech Republic, Finland, Europe, North America (players aged 23 and younger from Canada and U.S.), Russia, Sweden and the United States. Preliminary Round action begins Sept. 17. Training camp for the participating teams will begin Sept. 4-5. Each team will play three exhibition games.

On August 14th, the Pittsburgh Penguins and UPMC opened a brand-new, state-of-the-art practice and medical facility. The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry serves as the official practice home of the Penguins, and is the first medical facility in the country to conduct elite sports medicine research focusing on hockey-related training, rehab and injury prevention. The 185,000-square foot facility includes 54,000 square feet of clinical space, offering expert care in orthopaedics, concussion management, physical and occupational therapy and on-site MRI and x-ray imaging. The complex features two sheets of ice and the Penguins have a locker room and weight room similar to those at CONSOL Energy Center as well as other NHL-style facilities for coaches and players. The two sheets of ice are home to the Penguins Elite youth hockey program in addition to amateur and high school games, adult hockey leagues and instructional camps and clinics. The facility also offers public skating and figure skating and will host community events.

Gary Roberts, the former NHL star who played parts of two seasons with the Penguins, oversees the philosophy and off-ice training regimen at the facility’s Sports Performance Center. He also consults with full-time UPMC staff to create fitness programs that can benefit players at all levels of hockey. Another former NHL player, Matt Herr, serves as executive director of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. An outstanding two-sport athlete at the University of Michigan, Herr was drafted by professional teams in both hockey (Washington Capitals) and baseball (Atlanta Braves). He played 58 NHL games with Washington, Florida and Boston and worked in both prep school hockey and as a regional manager for USA Hockey when his playing days were over. Herr oversees business and hockey operations at the complex and will work with UPMC Sports Medicine and the Sports Performance Center to design an integrated development model for hockey. The sports medicine clinic includes 24 private patient rooms and a physical therapy gym overlooking the Penguins’ practice rink. There also is a dedicated sports performance space including a sprinting track and batting cages.

HOCKEY PLAYERS AT UPMC LEMIEUX SPORTS COMPLEX By Joseph Guzy
The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry isn’t just the new practice rink of the Penguins. The young hockey players in Pittsburgh are the real owners of this first-class facility. “Everybody thinks it’s just for the Penguins,” said Matt Herr, Executive Director of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. “But anyone can come here and sign up. You can come here and work with our staff. Then you can go into the weight room and train with Gary Roberts. Then maybe next year you can even play for Penguins Elite.” The creation of the player pool for Penguins Elite, Western Pennsylvania’s premier AAA amateur hockey organization, also comes from the new facility with the Penguins Mite skating and skills program. “The Mite development program is four to six-year-olds and then six to eight-year-olds,” Herr said. “And all those players can all play on Penguins Elite.” The facility has so much more to offer in addition to the Mite Development League. They also have the Penguins Hockey School, which offers year-round leagues, camps and clinics. Power skating clinics are run by Max Ivanov, a well-known power skating instructor and skill development coach who works with Evgeni Malkin. Ty Hennes, a former standout player for Boston College, leads the skills sessions. And goalie training for players of all levels are run by Mike Chiasson, a former QMJHL goalie with the Rimouski Oceanic who played four years at Acadia University in Nova Scotia. continued on page 95

All in all, the goal is to produce better hockey players. According to Herr, the most important part of their development program is pushing kids to take their own path. “We want these kids to be able to go on their own and be able to develop their own game while having fun,” Herr said. “You watch all the great players, the guys that are creative and can score. “Half of Sidney Crosby’s skill is his thinking of the game. We want to encourage that with all of our players that come through here.” Perhaps the best place for young hockey players to do that is at the GNC Skills Development Center inside the facility. Herr calls it the “Dave and Buster’s of hockey.” It features a RapidShot system referred to as “the batting cage for hockey players,” three RapidHands puck-handling training stations and a 60-foot resistance skating lane. “Kids have their swipe card with $20.00 on it, and Mom can sit and drink a latte while reading her book in the lobby and the kid can stickhandle and shoot,” Herr said. “It’s a key component because our big theme is that we can work with you all you want but in the end, you have to take ownership of your development.” For more information on all of these programs, visit UPMCLemieuxSportsComplex.com

In 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation embarked on a new venture in the educational space. Understanding the importance of KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE technology in the classroom, the Foundation developed a one-of-a-kind program that would combine the latest in tablet technology with the ever changing landscape in today’s classroom. This program became Tablets in Education. Since it’s inception, Tablets in Education has provided over 120 schools and educational programs in Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Lawrence, Mercer, Washington and Westmoreland counties with a total of 2,700 Kindle Fire tablets. In 2015, the Foundation purchased over 150,000 apps and specialized content for the program. Along with support of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, educators and administrators have the guidance of the Allegheny Intermediate Unit 3. Creating training and continuing education sessions to optimize the use of the Kindle devices. Seeing the importance of science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics (STEAM), the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation continues to support education in our community. PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER
One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 41th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK COLOR ANALYST
Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 13th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

Josh is in his first season as a Radio Broadcast Host and PensTV Host with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He joins the Penguins after spending the previous two years as the sports director for FOX Champaign in Champaign, Illinois. While in Champaign, Josh covered the University of Illinois and Big Ten athletics, local high school athletics, and various professional teams in the region. In June of 2015, Josh was named the Television Sportscaster of the Year by the Illinois Broadcasters Association. In addition to his time in Illinois, Josh has also worked as a sports anchor/ reporter at WENY-TV and radio update anchor at 1410 WELM ESPN Radio in Elmira, New York, and served as a member of the on-site production team during NBC’s coverage of Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia. He is a graduate of Ithaca College’s Roy H. Park School of Communications in Ithaca, New York.

Heads UP Pittsburgh is a first of its kind program that has served as the blueprint for other NHL and professional sports organizations since KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE its creation in 2010. Heads UP Pittsburgh is a partnership with UPMC Sports Medicine and funded by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. The purpose of the program is to reduce the amount of concussions in youth sports by providing free baseline concussion testing to young athletes, developing educational initiatives for athletes, parents, coaches, officials, teachers and pediatricians and finally support research projects. The results are quite impressive, since 2011 the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine have been able to: Baseline tests over 17,000 athletes, ages seven to 14 in 30 different sports Our staffs have educated over 45,000 people about concussions and sports related injuries 50,000 educational brochures were distributed at baseline test sites, pediatrician offices, schools and local rinks The Foundation funded over 4,000 neck strengthening kits with protocols to develop neck strength in young players From the neck strengthening program 500+ athletes became involved in a concussion research project Addressing other sport injuries the Foundation provided 3,000 free Duraband flexibility kits Next year we will introduce a new pediatric version of the baseline test targeted at seven to nine year-old players. At 16-years old, Olli Maatta left his native Finland to play for the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League. Separating him from his family and friends not just by borders, but an ocean. Adjusting to a different style of play was one thing, but adjusting to an entirely new lifestyle was another. “At first it was a little bit tough,” Maatta said. “I think the worst part was the language. It took awhile to get used to and pick it up a bit. After three months I was fine and really started liking it [in North America].” Certainly the Knight’s success made things easier, finishing the 2011-12 season with an OHL-best record of 49-18-0-1. Maatta was a big factor in their winning ways, scoring 32 points in 58 games while posting a plus-25 rating. In the midst of the Knight’s success, Maatta had the opportunity to represent Finland in the 2012 World Junior Championships. Unfortunately, his debut on the world stage was cut short as he suffered a concussion in the opening game of the tournament. “I think the injury is what it is,” Maatta said. “It really doesn’t change anything. You’re used to it as a hockey player. You know those things are going to happen in the long run.” continued on page 131

At just 21-years old, the Finnish defenseman has already had quite the run. Maatta earned a spot on the Penguins’ 2013-14 roster straight out of training camp as a 19-year-old and never looked back. He took on an increased role with injuries to Kris Letang and Paul Martin, averaging 18:30 of ice time over 78 games while scoring nine goals and 29 points. “I didn’t expect [the increased role],” Maatta said. “It was a lot of fun. I have to thank the coaching staff my rookie year and the rest of the defensemen. The older guys we had like Brooks Orpik, Rob Scuderi and Paul Martin really brought me in and talked to me a lot. They were awesome with me and made it a little bit easier for me to jump in.” Unfortunately, Maatta’s 2014-15 campaign would be cut short. Appearing in just 20 games, Maatta was sidelined with a cancerous tumor, the mumps and a re-injured shoulder. “There’s not a lot you can do with those things,” Maatta said. “It’s not easy but you just have to keep working hard. Just have a positive mindset that you’re going to get through it and get back out there.” After nearly 10 months without playing a game, Maatta had a steady start to the 2015-16 season. Through his first 18 games, he scored two goals and four points with a plus-8 rating. But on Nov. 17, injury struck again. At the halfway point of the Penguins 4-3 victory over Minnesota Wild, Nino Niederreiter hit Maatta into an open door on the Wild bench. It was announced the following morning that Maatta would miss three to four weeks. But just over two weeks later, the budding defenseman came back in a big way. Returning for the Penguins’ west coast road trip on Dec. 5, Maatta matched his point total before his injury in just continued on page 132

three games with two goals and four points. His motivation? “Excitement,” Maatta said. “Just getting back out there with the guys.” It’s his excitement and high level of play that has some of the newer faces on the Penguins taking notice. “He’s a great teammate and a great kid who works really hard,” said Trevor Daley, Maatta’s primary defensive partner since being acquired by the Penguins from Chicago on Dec. 14. “He can move the puck really well. I’ve enjoyed playing with him. He’s always supportive out there for me. As a partner, you can’t ask for much more than that.” For Daley, it’s not just Maatta’s play that has stood out — it’s also the skills he already has at such a young age. “It’s impressive, especially as a defenseman,” Daley said. “I was a young defenseman once upon time, a long time ago. It’s always tough coming in as a defenseman and playing a ton of minutes.” It’s not just players who are taking notice either. “Olli has been solid,” head coach Mike Sullivan said. “He can help us with the offense. I think he defends pretty well. As a young defenseman, he’s really established himself as a solid two-way guy.” Despite the positives of a comeback year for Maatta, he doesn’t dwell on personal success. Instead, he’s focusing on the challenge the team has in front of them. “We’re going through a struggle right now,” Maatta said. “There are going to be ups and downs throughout the season. We just have to keep working hard. The answer is in this room. I believe we have the character and the team to do it.”

SPREADING HOLIDAY CHEER AT CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL By Joseph Guzy
Penguins players have been making holiday visits to the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC since the 1970s to meet with children and their families during the holiday season for photos, autographs and, of course, a few gifts. On Dec. 17 they were Santa’s little helpers once again, delivering presents that included Kindle Fires, Amazon gift cards, team calendars, NHL blankets and stuffed penguins to patients. “It’s really important to come and spread that holiday cheer as best we can,” Ian Cole said. “Try to brighten the day of kids going through a really tough time.” The team split into four groups, visiting as many rooms as they could. Two-year-old CJ anxiously waited outside of his room for Sidney Crosby, Kris Letang, David Perron and Adam Clendening. CJ could hardly contain his excitement, to the point that when Perron was showing him the Penguins logo on the blanket, CJ took off running towards another patient. After a nurse brought him back to the players, CJ had quite the one-liner. “I’m back, boys.” As the group made their way around the wing, some players continued on page 144

got ahead which, in Letang’s case, gave him an advantage. Nine-year-old Colin was waiting in his wheelchair with a No. 58 jersey and mini-helmet. Letang offered an autograph, his signature taking up all of the white space on the crest of the jersey. Minutes later, Crosby showed up ready to sign whatever Colin wanted, but there was no space left on the jersey. “I think some of us wanted to sign it too,” Crosby said while Letang looked on with an innocent grin. Luckily, Colin’s family was around with a few more items for the rest of the guys. “It was awesome, so awesome,” Colin’s father James said. “I’m so glad that they do stuff like this. It’s fantastic. Especially for him, it’s going to build his confidence more. Colin is a hockey player himself, in need of that little extra push after getting out of the hospital. “It inspires him because he plays hockey too,” James said. “It’ll make him want to go play again.”

Mike Sullivan arrived from the AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins as a former head coach of the Bruins, as a former assistant with the Bruins, Lightning, Rangers and Canucks, and as a former player with over 700 NHL games on his resume. Given his extensive NHL background, it’s hardly a surprise that Sullivan brought with him an understanding of who he’ll be in his second go-around as an NHL head coach and how he’ll expect the NHL Penguins to play the game. A sampling of Sullivan’s thoughts in the early going of his tenure on: What he’d like the Penguins to look like: “We don’t want to be a team that trades [scoring] chance for [scoring] chance. We have some offensive people but we certainly don’t want to be a team that trades chance for chance. We have to become more difficult to play against by making better decisions with the puck. “I’m a coach that certainly doesn’t want to take the stick out of our players’ hands. I believe in allowing our top guys to act on their instincts and create. But I think we have to do a better job of recognizing circumstances where we really don’t have a lot of puck support or a lot of speed and make better decisions. If we do that we’ll be a more difficult team to play against because we’ll make teams play 200 feet.” continued on page 157

We’ve gotta find a way to free ourselves up to be more instinctive and not press.” Dealing with adversity: “We can’t get discouraged. We just gotta get more determined.” Responding to rough treatment of star players by opponents: “The best response from our standpoint is to make sure we don’t lose our focus. We’re going to play hard. We’re going to play between the whistles. We’re not going to get deterred from the type of game that we have to play in order to try to give our team the best chance to win. “We’re going to play with energy. We’re going to play with emotion. We’re going to push back but we’re going to do it the right way.”

The necessary nightly approach: “We have to come with the energy and the enthusiasm and the inspiration and the focus to play the way we need to play in order to get the result.” What he has on his hands: “We have some real good forwards. I think we have to try to create a game where we can get [the puck] into their hands as quickly as possible. We’ve tried to emphasize coming out of our end zone so that, hopefully, we can play a more efficient game as far as transitioning out of our end zone. I think we have a pretty good understanding of what we have.” On whether he’s a John Tortorella disciple after working as an assistant under Tortorella with the Lightning, Rangers and Canucks: “I learned a lot from ‘Torts’ over the years coaching with him. I think he’s a terrific hockey coach. I would say that our styles are very different because we’re two very different people. “Having said that I really admire his preparation, his organizational skills, his clarity of his convictions and how he wants to play and how he interacts with his players. I’ve grown to admire that over the years watching him. “Do we share some similar philosophies? Yes, but as far as our styles I think we’re two very different people. I think the way we go about our business as far as interacting with our players is different because we’re two different personalities.”

DRAFT CLASS DANIEL SPRONG
Forward • 2nd round, 46th overall Sprong, who was ranked 20th among North American skaters heading into the 2015 NHL Draft by Central Registry, paced the Charlottetown Islanders of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in goals (39), assists (49) and points (88) for the second straight season in 2014-15. The previous year, Sprong finished second among QMJHL rookies with 68 points (30G-38A-68P) in 67 games en route to being named to the League’s All-Rookie Team. BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Sprong was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands where his father, Hannie, played professional hockey in Holland in the early 1990s. Daniel, who models parts of his game after Ilya Kovalchuk (particularly his shot), hopes to become the first Dutch-born NHL player since Ed Kea. He is a Yankees fan in baseball, Patriots fan in football (though he laughed he may need to change that) and a Cleveland Cavaliers fan in basketball.

BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Simon, the youngest player on the Czech team at the 2015 World Championship, was paired on a line with the team’s most senior member, former Penguin Jaromir Jagr — and the two combined for a goal against France. Simon finished that tournament with six points (1G-5A) in 10 games. Simon also helped his country top Canada at the 2014 World Junior Championship with the game-deciding shootout goal. He has become a Pirates fan since coming to North America.
FREDERICK TIFFELS
Forward • 6th round, 167th overall In 2014-15 Tiffels posted nine goals and 19 points in his freshman season with Western Michigan under Andy Murray, who previously served as the head coach of the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings (1999-2006) and the St. Louis Blues (2006-10). Before joining the Broncos, Tiffels also played one season in the USHL with Cedar Rapids, Fargo and Muskegon. BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Tiffels is a native of Cologne, Germany and he represented his country in the 2014 and ’15 World Junior Championships. He came overseas to play hockey in the USHL and now college. Tiffels is a big soccer fan and follows his hometown club, FC Koln. His favorite player on the team is Lukas Podolski.
NIKITA PAVLYCHEV
Forward • 7th round, 197th overalll Pavlychev, a native of Yaroslavl, Russia, posted 16 points (6G-10A) and 80 penalty minutes in 42 games with Des Moines of the USHL in 2014-15. He has incredible size for a forward at 6-foot-7 and 200 pounds. BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Pavlychev cut his hockey teeth in Pennsylvania with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights, a junior team, then in the Atlantic Junior Hockey League, alongside fellow draft pick Daniel Sprong. Pavlychev has committed to play collegiate hockey this season for Penn State University.

BUILDING INFORMATION ALCOHOL Guests of CONSOL Energy Center must be 21 years of age or older to purchase and/or consume alcoholic beverages. ARAMARK reserves the right to check proof of legal drinking age. There is a maximum of TWO (2) alcoholic beverages per purchase at all concession stands and portable vendors. For Pittsburgh Penguins games, all alcohol sales within the arena will conclude at the beginning of the third period. Individual concerts and events are determined on a show-by-show basis.

BAGS, BACKPACKS AND PURSES For security purposes, only small personal bags (purses, baby or diaper bags, etc.) will be permitted inside CONSOL Energy Center and all items are subject to search upon entrance. Large bags, coolers, backpacks and sealed packages, including gifts for performers and/or athletes of any kind are not permitted unless otherwise noted on the individual event page.
BANNERS AND SIGNS Banners and signs are permitted for most events, providing they are appropriate, as deemed by building management. Signs must not be commercial in nature or utilize wood, metal or other types of objects for support. They cannot be hung or fastened anywhere in the building or in any way obstruct another guest’s view or building signage.
AUTOMOTIVE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM AAA will have a “Puck Truck” at all Penguins home games. The “Puck Truck” is available to assist patrons that have trouble with their vehicles in CONSOL Energy Center lots only. Fans can call 1.800.AAA.HELP after the start of the third period.

EMERGENCY EVACUATION In the event of an emergency, CONSOL Energy Center staff will utilize the public address (PA) system

ENTRANCES AND EXITS There are four (4) points of entry into CONSOL Energy Center: Peoples Gate (Fifth Avenue and Washington Place), Trib Total Media Gate (Centre Avenue Lower Entrance), Verizon Gate (Centre Avenue Upper Entrance), and a private parking garage entrance for suite ticket holders.
FAMILY RESTROOMS Family restrooms are available on all levels of CONSOL Energy Center near sections 106/107, 108, 115, 121, 213, 225, party suite 44 and suite 13.
FIRST AID There are two (2) First Aid Stations presented by UPMC, one on each level of CONSOL Energy Center. First Aid is located adjacent to the Guest Services office outside section 104 and behind the concession stand at section 232.
FOOD AND BEVERAGES No food or beverages of any kind are permitted to be brought into CONSOL Energy Center. Concession stands located throughout the arena sell a wide variety of food, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark Hosanna House/Sherwood Event Center Wilkinsburg have completed a four year Lewis Park Hazelwood $2.3 million initiative. In September 2015, the last North Park McCandless dek rink was completed Paul J. Scuillo II Memorial Park Bloomfield bringing the total Renzie Park McKeesport completed rinks to 12. Richland Community Park Richland Twp. In 2012, the Pittsburgh Riverside Park Oakmont Penguins Foundation and Settler’s Cabin Park Oakdale Highmark created Project South Park Community Park South Park Power Play, to provide athletes with a multipurpose surface to enjoy dek hockey and other sports. Each rink received a dasher board system, scoreboard, player benches, metal shelters, a penalty box, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment.
