THE NHL By: Mike Prisuta
JACK ATTACK: Sabres C Jack Eichel became the first Buffalo rookie to post a four-point game since 2010 when he produced two goals and two assists in a 6-3 win on Dec. 26 at Boston. The last Sabres’ rookie to register a four-point night was Tyler Myers (1+3) on March 10, 2010. Eichel, 19, became the second-youngest Sabres player to produce a four-point game (Phil Housley, 18, on Oct. 17, 1982 against Edmonton). 10
NO STREAKING: The Capitals didn’t lose consecutive games in compiling a 26-6-2 record through 34 games (the Stars were the only other NHL team that could make that same claim). Washington went 8-0 following a loss and outscored opponents 28-12 in those eight games. The Caps also held opponents to two or fewer goals in seven of those contests and scored a power-play goal in six of those eight games.

FRONT-RUNNERS: Minnesota’s 18-10-6 effort through 34 games included a 16-3-2 mark when scoring the first goal of a game, a 10-1-1 record when leading after the first period and a 12-0-1 showing when ahead after 40 minutes.
MILESTONE ‘W’: The Red Wings’ 4-2 victory over Calgary on Dec. 20 was Detroit’s 800th regular-season win at Joe Louis Arena.
MAKING IT COUNT: Rangers RW Mats Zuccarello had tallied all 15 of his goals and 28 of his 30 points through New York’s first 36 games when the Rangers had led by a goal, were tied or trailed by a goal.
OH, DID HE?: Stars D Johnny Oduya appeared in his 700th NHL game on Dec. 26, a 3-2 shootout loss to the Blues. Oduya produced 165 points (35+130) over parts of 10 NHL seasons with New Jersey, Atlanta/Winnipeg, Chicago and Dallas on the way to 700 career games.
FIND ’EM WHERE YOU CAN: The Bruins’ 23-man roster on Dec. 27 included just six home-grown products (players drafted by Boston). The Bruins had 10 players who had been acquired in trades, six that had been signed as free agents and one that had been claimed off waivers.

NOTES By: Bob Grove
THE SERIES [VS] ISLANDERS
On Jan. 2 the Penguins open their 2016 schedule with a game against the New York Islanders, the first meeting of the season against their Metropolitan Division rivals. This is the latest in a season the Penguins and Islanders have had their first meeting since the 2000-01 season, when their initial game was on Jan. 12. . . Pittsburgh has lost four consecutive games to New York (0-3-1) since a 3-1 win here on Oct. 18, 2014; the Penguins have not dropped five straight against the Islanders since Feb. 1-Dec. 23, 1986. . . Prior to this losing streak, Pittsburgh had won eight of its last nine games against New York. . . During this four-game losing streak, the Penguins have had only five power play chances while the Islanders have had just seven. . . Pittsburgh has lost two straight home games to New York and has not dropped three straight here since a four-game skid Dec. 19, 1992 through Feb. 10, 1994. . . Patric Hornqvist, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin each had six points in the series against New York last season to lead the Penguins, while Kyle Okposo led the Islanders with six points. Okposo had four goals in a 6-3 victory on Long Island last Jan. 16 . . . Pittsburgh is 111-96-7 with 22 ties all-time against the Islanders, including a 63-40-3 mark with 14 ties at home. The teams’ next game is in Brooklyn on March 8. continued on page 14

THE SERIES [VS] BLACKHAWKS
On Jan. 5 the Penguins begin a home-and-home series with the defending Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks, against whom they have lost five of their last seven games (2-1-4). They meet again Jan. 6 in Chicago . . . This is the first home-and-home series between the teams in almost 37 years; the Penguins won here, 5-1, on Feb. 24, 1979 before earning a 2-2 tie in Chicago the next night. The only sweep by either team in the five previous home-and-home sets came during the first one in November, 1968 when the Hawks earned a 6-5 win here and a 6-4 win at home. . . The Penguins are 4-2-4 in their last 10 regular-season games against the defending Cup champions. . . The Hawks swept the series last season, earning a 3-2 home shootout win on Jan. 21 and a 2-1 road shootout win on Feb. 15. Excluding goals awarded for a shootout win, Chicago has scored four goals in its last three games against the Penguins. . . Pittsburgh has earned points in 15 of its last 16 home games against the Hawks (10-1-2 with three ties), a period covering almost 25 years. The only regulation loss in that span came on Feb. 22, 1997 (2-5). . . The Penguins are 44-64-4 with 17 ties all-time against Chicago, including a 32-23-2 mark with seven ties at home. continued on page 16

SEASON TICKET HOLDER SPOTLIGHT
SEAN ROGAN
WITH WHOM DO YOU ATTEND PENGUINS HOME GAMES? I share a package with my friend, Roy. We met during Grad School at The University of Pittsburgh and became friends. We bought student rush tickets and went to games back at the Igloo.
Hometown: Pittsburgh, PA Season Ticket Location: 104, W, 5-6 First Season as a Penguins Season Ticket Holder: 2006
PAST OR PRESENT, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE IN-GAME ENTERTAINMENT FEATURE? Truth be told, I’m not much of an in-game entertainment guy. The game itself is my entertainment. That being said, if I had to pick, it would be the Hulk Hogan “Malkamania” goal call since it means the Penguins scored. continued on page 20

WHAT LESSER KNOWN PENGUINS PLAYER (PAST OR PRESENT) HAS LEFT A LASTING IMPRESSION ON YOU? WHAT DID HE DO TO MAKE THAT IMPRESSION? As student rushers, I have very fond memories of The Great Dick Tarnstrom. I was also in the building for Nils Ekman’s sub five-minute hat trick. That was something I knew at the time I might never see again. WHAT IS THE MOST UNIQUE KEEPSAKE Sean as a child participating in Mario’s hockey camp IN YOUR PERSONAL COLLECTION OF PENGUINS MEMORABILIA? I attended Mario Lemieux’s hockey camp when I was 11- or 12-years old. His dad and brother came into the locker room, and the only thing I had in my gear bag was an iron-on t-shirt graphic of Mario. I had Mario, his brother Alain and their dad sign it. I don’t suspect there are many of those floating around! WHAT PENGUINS RELATED STORY DO YOU RETELL MOST OFTEN? It would have to be that I was in attendance for Mario’s four goal performance in the All-Star Game at the Igloo. DO YOU REMEMBER WHERE YOU WERE WHEN THE PENGUINS WON THE CUP IN ‘91, ‘92 OR ‘09? I can recall exactly where I was for all three Penguins Cup wins. In ’91, I was 10-years old and my dad and I would go to our cottage almost every weekend. We didn’t have a TV at the time, so we listened to the radio by a campfire. And since we won in ’91, we had to repeat the same process again the following year for the ’92 Cup. For the ’09 Cup, well, I was a little older. I watched and celebrated on the South Side. All three are nights that I will never forget. WHICH TEAM/ARENA WOULD YOU LIKE TO VISIT FOR A PENGUINS GAME AND WHY? I’d like to catch a game in Nashville. It seems like a fantastic and energetic crowd!

PENGUINS ELITE ORGANIZATION HOST ANNUAL
MID-WINTER CLASSIC By Ashley Roseman and Heather Schrecengost
The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite Organization and the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex played host to the Mid-Winter Classic on December 18-20. The tournament consisted of 42 teams in five different birth years, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006. The tournament had teams come from near and far including teams from Florida, Toronto and Chicago for this year’s event. The Penguins Elite organization was well represented in the tournament as they had two teams at each age level with their Elite and Black teams participating. In the 2002 division, the Chicago Fury capped off a 5-1 weekend by beating the Pittsburgh Selects in the Championship game of the 10 team division. The Fury snuck past North Pittsburgh 3-2 in the semifinals before taking home the championship in convincing fashion with a 7-1 win. The 2003 division had an all Pittsburgh final as the Penguins Elite took home the championship beating the Penguins Elite Black team by a score of 4-3. The Penguins Elite posted an impressive 6-0 record over the course of the tournament. In the 2004 division, the Florida Alliance Elite captured the title after trouncing the Chicago Fury 9-0. The Alliance went 5-1 on the weekend with their only loss coming from the Whitby Wildcats. The Philadelphia Little Flyers proved to be too much in the 2005 division as they went undefeated over the weekend with a 6-0 record, allowing only five goals against in the process. The Little Flyers defeated the Florida Alliance Elite in the championship by a score of 6-0. The Penguins Elite took home their second championship of the weekend as they beat the Florida Alliance 8-2 in the Championship Game of the 2006 division. The 2006 Penguins Elite posted an impressive 5-0 record throughout the tournament. For more information and results for other Penguins Elite and Penguins Elite Black teams throughout the season, please follow them at pittsburghpenguinselite.com

PENGUINS PROFILE
CONOR
SHEARY By: Mark Madden
28
Rookie winger Conor Sheary was involved with both Penguins goals when they hosted Boston on Feb 18: His first NHL goal, and his first NHL assist. But the Bruins scored six times and the Penguins lost, 6-2. The defeat was the Penguins’ fourth straight. “Bittersweet’s a good word,” said Sheary, 23. “We’re not winning right now, so it’s kind of tough in the room. But obviously, I was glad to get a goal.” The 5-foot-9, 161-pound mighty mite made his NHL debut two nights prior at Boston. Sheary got to work with a pretty good center during his salad days with the Penguins, namely captain Sidney Crosby. “Playing with a guy like that, you’re going to want to give him the puck because you know he can make plays,” Sheary said. “I just try to stick to my own game and play hard. He’s going to find me and, hopefully, I can find him. “I’m not trying to change my game too much. But it’s obviously different having him as my center.” Sheary had six goals and 19 assists in 24 games with the Penguins’ Wilkes-Barre/Scranton farm club this year before joining the Penguins. Last season, his first full campaign as a pro, saw him pile up 20 goals and 25 assists in 58 games for the WB/S Penguins. Sheary has been a great playoff performer for Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton: 23 points in 23 games. It didn’t take long for the UMass-Amherst product to ascertain that there’s a big difference between the American Hockey League and the NHL. “I can’t really pinpoint one specific thing — just the size and speed of the guys at this level is a big step from what it was [in the AHL],” Sheary said. “Everyone is just that much faster.” The Massachusetts native isn’t big and, Sheary admits, “Size has always been a problem for me. I use my speed as my asset and try to beat bigger guys like that, and not let them get in my way.” Sheary had a solid collegiate career: 38 goals and 66 assists in 138 games for UMass-Amherst. He was team captain as a senior (2013-14). Sheary’s first NHL goal happened in the blink of an eye: Crosby picked up a loose puck behind the Boston net and quickly slipped a pass to Sheary right in front, who promptly deposited the puck continued on page 31

behind Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask. “I saw the puck behind the net, and I just tried to find a soft area,” Sheary said. “I kind of lost myself in the weeds behind their defense, and obviously it worked out.” When Crosby’s involvement with his first-ever NHL goal was discussed, Sheary said, “That’s going to be a pretty good memory.” Penguins coach Mike Sullivan previously coached Sheary in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. He liked Sheary’s performance in the disappointing home loss to Boston. “Conor can play that give-and-go game down low in the corners,” Sullivan said. “That’s one of Sid’s strengths. Conor can certainly help him there. He scores a goal, he was on the puck, he was quick to pucks, and he helps create turnovers. He’s a good player. “He’s got hockey sense that we can play him up and down the lineup. He can play on a checking line, and we can play him with one of the top players.” Sheary feels like playing for Sullivan gives him a bit of an edge. “Because he was my coach down in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, he has a little bit of trust in me.” Sheary said. “He knows how I can play, and I think he thinks I can play at that level. I’m just going to bring my own game and hopefully it works out.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN
Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, has been co-owner of the Penguins since 1999. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including nine straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past eight years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open CONSOL Energy Center in August, 2010. The facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. The Penguins ownership group, local labor organizations and members of the Pittsburgh business community honored Lemieux in 2012 with a statue to commemorate his career and contributions to the city and the region. Appropriately named “Le Magnifique,” the statue, by nationally-acclaimed sculptor Bruce Wolfe, can be seen outside the Trib Total Media gate at CONSOL Energy Center. RON BURKLE CO-OWNER
Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in technology, retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, has been co-owner of the Penguins for 16 years. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they became one of the most outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. The Penguins reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009 and won the Cup in ‘09. The team’s ownership has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign many of the team’s young core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year — leading to nine straight playoff berths, and three appearances in the conference finals in the past eight years. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award. DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT
David Morehouse is chief executive officer and president of the Penguins, overseeing all aspects of the team’s operation. The Penguins have become one of the NHL’s strongest business entities during his tenure — selling out every game for eight-plus seasons, setting new standards for corporate sales and television ratings and increasing their focus on innovative youth marketing. Morehouse joined the team as a consultant on the arena project in 2004 and was named team president in April 2007. He was given the additional responsibilities of chief executive officer in August 2010. Under his leadership, the Penguins have reshaped their strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, community interaction, corporate outreach and cutting-edge technology. Beyond that, the Penguins have led all U.S.-based NHL teams in local television ratings for six-straight seasons and rank among the league leaders in social media followers, website traffic and merchandise sales. A strong commitment to fan outreach includes an annual event where players personally deliver season tickets to fans’ homes and a special preseason game were all 18,000 tickets are distributed free to local youth. Morehouse also was a driving force behind the new UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, which opened in August. It is the first facility to combine hockey with a world-class medical center and sports performance complex. Morehouse joined the Penguins following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill — as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

JIM RUTHERFORD
EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT & GENERAL MANAGER
Jim Rutherford is in his second season as executive vice president and general manager of the Penguins. During his first year, the Penguins qualified for their ninth-consecutive postseason berth despite playing a majority of the final two months without arguably the team’s top-three defensemen. Rutherford spent the previous 20 years as GM of the Carolina Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers franchise from 1994-2014 where he was a key architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team. In addition to his general manager duties, he also served 20 years as president of Carolina/Hartford, taking the post in 1994. In his role as president/GM, Rutherford oversaw operations on both the hockey and business sides of the organization. He oversaw a Spitfires team that won the OHL championship in 1988 and earned a berth in the Memorial Cup. Rutherford played 13 years as a goaltender in the NHL, appearing in 457 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit. Sullivan has 13 years of coaching experience at the professional level. He served two seasons as the Boston Bruins head coach from 2003-06. Sullivan also spent 11 years as an NHL player from 1991-2002. He was promoted to head coach of the NHL Bruins at age 35 in 2003-04, winning a Northeast Division crown in the first of his two years at the helm. As the head coach in Providence, Sullivan compiled a record of 41-17-9-4 (.669 pct.) in 71 games before his promotion to Boston. Sullivan served as an NHL assistant coach for seven-consecutive years from 2007-14 with Tampa Bay, the NY Rangers and Vancouver. In addition to his professional coaching experience, Sullivan has twice coached the United States internationally. He was the head coach at the 2007 World Championship and an assistant coach at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turino, Italy. During the 2014-15 season, Sullivan was a member of the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks player development staff. Sullivan’s 11-year NHL career began with the expansion San Jose Sharks in 1991-92 and included stops in Calgary, Boston and Arizona. A penalty-kill specialist, Sullivan recorded 54 goals (16 shorthanded) and 136 points in 709 NHL games. Sullivan was drafted by the New York Rangers in the fourth round (69th overall) of the 1987 NHL Draft. He played four years of collegiate hockey at Boston University from 1986-90, serving as the Terriers captain as a senior. Whether it’s listening in on coach Mike Sullivan’s pregame speech, hearing mic’d up Penguins players talking on the bench or traveling to Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, with Sidney Crosby as he trains for the upcoming season, In The Room delivers unique, unprecedented coverage of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The show has won back-to-back Emmy Awards as the best sports series in the Mid-Atlantic region in both 2014 and 2015. “The idea of doing our own show developed because of the success of HBO’s 24/7 Road to the Winter Classic in 2010-11,” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse. “We got a lot of positive feedback from our fans about the unbelievable access to players and coaches. With In The Room, we can continue to show fans a side of the team they’ve never seen before.”

PLAYERS BRIGHTEN HOLIDAYS FOR PATIENTS AT CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
On December 17, Penguins players donned Santa hats and made their annual holiday visit to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC spreading cheer and making the patient’s hospital stay a little brighter during the holiday season. Visiting each floor of the hospital, players distributed plush holiday penguins, Kindle Fire tablets and Amazon gift cards, team calendars and blankets to the patients. Players stopped by each room, meeting the children and their families, taking photos and signing autographs. Smiles were in abundance among the patients and the players as the Penguins continued a team tradition started back in the early 1980s.

GET TO KNOW:
SCOTT WILSON By Michelle Crechiolo
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED PLAYING? When my sister was born I got a present from her in the hospital (laughs). It was a pair of skates. I put them on in the hospital and I was just walking around. My mom used to take me to the local rink and I would just skate for hours. WHO WERE YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCES ON AND OFF THE ICE? My dad. He’s a serious guy but he taught me to just relax and have your funny moments. One of his best friends, Steve Ludzik, played for Chicago for a while. He was always around too, so he was always giving me advice and stuff and that helped me a lot. WHO DO YOU MODEL YOUR STYLE OF PLAY AFTER? I’ve been told multiple times [Chris] Kunitz. Every year that I’ve been here they’ve kind of wanted me to model my game after him. He likes to shoot the puck but is physical and aggressive too. WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE MUSICAL ARTISTS? I’m a country guy. I like Eric Church. Saw a concert of his this year. WHAT MOVIE COULD YOU WATCH OVER AND OVER? I could watch Dumb and Dumber eight times a day. ARE THERE ANY TV SHOWS THAT YOU WATCH? I just got through all of Friends, and then one of my favorites of all time is King of Queens. DO YOU HAVE ANY PETS? I have a Portuguese water dog named Macie at home. That’s the same dog as the Obamas’. We had it first, though (laughs). WHO WERE YOUR FAVORITE PRO TEAMS GROWING UP? The Leafs and the Cleveland Browns. I don’t really watch that much football but whenever it’s on TV at home my dad is always watching the Browns, so I just kind of got into watching them. Him and his dad used to go down to Cleveland and watch the Browns, that was their yearly thing. I don’t know why they picked the Browns, but it’s passed down from generation to generation, I guess.

PENGUINS DEVELOPING AMATEUR
HOCKEY PLAYERS AT UPMC LEMIEUX SPORTS COMPLEX By Joseph Guzy
The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry isn’t just the new practice rink of the Penguins. The young hockey players in Pittsburgh are the real owners of this first-class facility. “Everybody thinks it’s just for the Penguins,” said Matt Herr, Executive Director of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. “But anyone can come here and sign up. You can come here and work with our staff. Then you can go into the weight room and train with Gary Roberts. Then maybe next year you can even play for Penguins Elite.” The creation of the player pool for Penguins Elite, Western Pennsylvania’s premier AAA amateur hockey organization, also comes from the new facility with the Penguins Mite skating and skills program. “The Mite development program is four to six-year-olds and then six to eight-year-olds,” Herr said. “And all those players can all play on Penguins Elite.” The facility has so much more to offer in addition to the Mite Development League. They also have the Penguins Hockey School, which offers year-round leagues, camps and clinics. Power skating clinics are run by Max Ivanov, a well-known power skating instructor and skill development coach who works with Evgeni Malkin. Ty Hennes, a former standout player for Boston College, leads the skills sessions. And goalie training for players of all levels are run by Mike Chiasson, a former QMJHL goalie with the Rimouski Oceanic who played four years at Acadia University in Nova Scotia. continued on page 95
93
TRIB PERM
continued from page 93
All in all, the goal is to produce better hockey players. According to Herr, the most important part of their development program is pushing kids to take their own path. “We want these kids to be able to go on their own and be able to develop their own game while having fun,” Herr said. “You watch all the great players, the guys that are creative and can score. “Half of Sidney Crosby’s skill is his thinking of the game. We want to encourage that with all of our players that come through here.” Perhaps the best place for young hockey players to do that is at the GNC Skills Development Center inside the facility. Herr calls it the “Dave and Buster’s of hockey.” It features a RapidShot system referred to as “the batting cage for hockey players,” three RapidHands puck-handling training stations and a 60-foot resistance skating lane. “Kids have their swipe card with $20.00 on it, and Mom can sit and drink a latte while reading her book in the lobby and the kid can stickhandle and shoot,” Herr said. “It’s a key component because our big theme is that we can work with you all you want but in the end, you have to take ownership of your development.” For more information on all of these programs, visit UPMCLemieuxSportsComplex.com

THE RUSH Introduced in the mid 1990’s, the Pittsburgh Penguins Student Rush Program is one of the most popular and well known marketing initiatives of the team. Designed to sell remaining game day inventory, the Student Rush program provides the Pittsburgh Penguins an opportunity to introduce new fans to the game of hockey at a discounted rate. With many past Student Rush participants now attending games as Pittsburgh Penguins Season Ticket Holders, the program has been successful in developing a long-term relationship with young, active Pittsburghers. During the 2015-16 season, an estimated 200 Student Rush tickets will be made available for each regular season home game at CONSOL Energy Center. Eligible students have access to purchase these tickets through an exclusive, day of game, online pre-sale. To receive pre-sale information, students can text RUSH to 32623 to register for the Student Rush Mobile Club. Each pre-game text also includes the opportunity to win two free tickets to the next home game! In addition to the 200 tickets offered each game, several games have been designated special Student Rush nights. For these games, at least 500 tickets will be available online! For more information on the Pittsburgh Penguins Student Rush program, the terms and conditions and a schedule of special Student Rush nights, scan the code at the top of the page or visit pittsburghpenguins.com/studentrush. HOCKEY
ETIQUETTE 101 Our goal? To create an awesome game experience for all fans! Help make that happen by remembering the following: 1.
DO NOT ENTER OR EXIT THE SEATING AREA DURING PLAY! Hockey is fast — and goals can be missed in an instant. Fans moving through rows and up aisles can block the view of an entire seating area. Wait until the whistle blows to make your move. HINT #1: The red light above the penalty boxes is lit for TV timeouts. TV timeouts occur at the first whistle stops inside the 14:00, 10:00, and 6:00 minute mark of each period, EXCEPT following an icing call or goal. When the light comes on, this is your chance to make a dash to the restroom or your seats!
T:8.5”
B:8.75”
S:7.5”
HINT #2: The concourse TVs now feature a countdown clock during the intermissions, smart huh? Thank the season ticket holders for recommending this awesome idea! 2.
NO LEANING! We know you are into the game, but leaning creates a ripple effect, affecting the view of the fans in the rows behind you. Sit back so all can enjoy the game!
3.
KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE PUCK! Pucks can hurt when they enter the seating area!
4.
CONSOL Energy Center is a non-smoking facility; smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, is prohibited.
5.
It’s hard to like fans of the opposing team, we get it. However, we think it is pretty cool that they chose to come to our building. Be aware of children sitting around you and let the guys on the ice do the talking!
6.
Cheer, clap and let the players know you are here! Hockey is the best sport to watch live — have fun!

MIKE LANGE
PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER
One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 41th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

Heads UP Pittsburgh is a first of its kind program that has served as the blueprint for other NHL and professional sports organizations since KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE its creation in 2010. Heads UP Pittsburgh is a partnership with UPMC Sports Medicine and funded by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. The purpose of the program is to reduce the amount of concussions in youth sports by providing free baseline concussion testing to young athletes, developing educational initiatives for athletes, parents, coaches, officials, teachers and pediatricians and finally support research projects. The results are quite impressive, since 2011 the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine have been able to: Baseline tests over 17,000 athletes, ages seven to 14 in 30 different sports Our staffs have educated over 45,000 people about concussions and sports related injuries 50,000 educational brochures were distributed at baseline test sites, pediatrician offices, schools and local rinks The Foundation funded over 4,000 neck strengthening kits with protocols to develop neck strength in young players From the neck strengthening program 500+ athletes became involved in a concussion research project Addressing other sport injuries the Foundation provided 3,000 free Duraband flexibility kits Next year we will introduce a new pediatric version of the baseline test targeted at seven to nine year-old players. Through your support of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation events we continue to grow our programs dealing with physical well-being for the young people of our region. For more information about Heads UP Pittsburgh and testing locations, visit our website at pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org.

THE FIRST
OF MANY By: Joseph Guzy
Matt Murray was off to a 12-4 start with the Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins when Marc-Andre Fleury approached Pittsburgh Penguins coaching staff with concussion symptoms after practice on Dec. 15. It came as no surprise that Murray’s phone rang soon after. Before the call came, Murray had been busy following up an award-winning rookie year in the American Hockey League, where he won the Aldege “Baz” Bastien Memorial Award for the AHL’s best goaltender, the Dudley (Red) Garrett Memorial Award for AHL Rookie of the Year and — in tandem with Jeff Zatkoff — the Harry Holmes Memorial Award for the AHL team with fewest goals allowed. The accolades come as no surprise with Murray posting an AHL-best goals-against average (1.58) and save-percentage (.941) over the 2014-15 season. What the awards didn’t capture was arguably Murray’s biggest statement of his first full professional season. The Thunder Bay, Ontario native set the AHL shutout streak record, not allowing a goal in 304 minutes and 11 seconds — beating the previous record of 268:17 set by Barry Brust of the Abbotsford Heat in 2012 by nearly 36 minutes. Murray stopped 130 consecutive shots over the streak for four straight shutouts. But in the midst of posting an AHL-second best GAA (1.84) and tied for first save-percentage (.938) to start his second season in the AHL, Murray had to pick up the phone. It was the Pittsburgh Penguins on the other end after all. continued on page 131

“It’s pretty exciting,” Murray said after receiving the news. “It’s pretty overwhelming at the same time. I don’t really know what to feel, it hasn’t really sunk in yet. Kind of been non-stop since I got the call. But once I get a second to take it in and really realize what happened, I’ll be able to relax a little bit and be a little bit more comfortable.” It was a well-deserved call, as Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan — who had spent the first part of the season with Murray in WB/S before coming to Pittsburgh — called him the best goalie in the AHL. “He’s got a calm demeanor that gives confidence to his team,” Sullivan said. “He’s mature beyond his years and he’s a very competitive kid.” Murray made his NHL debut in the Penguins’ 2-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Dec. 19. Though his nameplate and jersey had been in the locker room for over four days, it wasn’t until 1:53 into the first period that Murray was officially welcomed to the big leagues — making his first save against Hurricanes forward Victor Rask. It wasn’t an ideal situation for the rookie netminder, as the Hurricanes were given three power plays in the first 15 minutes and converted two of them. But after that, Murray settled in and didn’t allow a goal for the final 45 minutes of play to keep his team in the game. “It’s kind of hard to see the good in things right now,” Murray said of his debut. “It’s pretty frustrating, but it was a very exciting day for me. Unfortunately, it didn’t go the way I planned, but I was proud of how I played.” Just 48 hours later, Murray would have another shot at his first NHL victory in a Metropolitan Division showdown with the Columbus Blue Jackets. continued on page 132

Even though the Blue Jackets forward Alexander Wennberg was able to one-time a bouncing puck behind Murray just under six minutes into the game, Murray shut the door in the second period to give the Penguins a chance to respond. They did. With power-play goals from Evgeni Malkin and David Warsofky bookending two beautiful tallies from Phil Kessel, the Penguins finished the second period up 4-1 and went on to win the game 5-2. The victory ended the team’s five-game winless stretch and gave Sullivan his first win as head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins. “I think I made a couple of saves when I needed to,” Murray said. “I didn’t have to be spectacular to win the game. I think I was there when I needed to be. We got the win. That’s what matters. I’m excited to get my first win out of the way for sure.” Though he already had an NHL start under his belt just two days prior, it was a bit easier for Murray to compare new challenges to those he faced in the AHL after a victory. “It’s just a huge step up in every aspect really,” Murray said. “Guys are bigger, faster, stronger. I think for me, with the improved shots I have to be a little bit more aggressive, maybe a little bit better with my play reading. That’ll come with experience. I think the more I play the more comfortable I’ll feel.” Despite his cool and calm demeanor, Murray didn’t shy away from showing a little excitement about the accomplishment of his first NHL victory. “It’s something I’ve been dreaming about for a long time,” Murray said. “It was unfortunate that I couldn’t get it in my first game there [against the Carolina Hurricanes]. I’m pretty glad to get it out of the way. “Hopefully, it’s the first of many.”

Since 2010 the Penguins have been the most injury-ravaged team in the NHL. Night after night, year after year, Pittsburgh’s stars have fallen victim to breaks, tears, strains and more. That rhetoric began to change this season, as the Penguins stayed relatively healthy for much of the first two months. But the Penguins’ luck ran out as the holiday season drew nearer. Beginning when Pascal Dupuis had to step away from hockey on Dec. 8, and continuing with injuries to Kris Letang and Beau Bennett, Pittsburgh’s lineup quickly became depleted. Then came the one loss everyone said the Penguins couldn’t overcome. Marc-Andre Fleury was diagnosed with a concussion Dec. 15, shelving the club’s best player over the past year and a half indefinitely. Initially, the fear that the Penguins would struggle minus Fleury proved prophetic, as the first three games without him all ended in losses, sending Pittsburgh spiraling down the standings. Who was going to step up and save the Penguins’ playoff hopes? Why none other than Matt Murray, the reigning AHL goaltender and rookie of the year. Murray’s first start on Nov. 19 against Carolina ended with Pittsburgh’s fifth-straight loss, but more importantly than the result was Murray stopping the final 18 shots he faced after two of the first eight pucks he saw ended up in the net behind him. “It was a very exciting day for me,” Murray said. “Unfortunately it didn’t go as planned. I was proud of how I played. continued on page 144

“I was proud of how I was able to bounce back after letting those two early goals in.” Feeling confident with a start under his belt, Murray earned his first NHL victory against Columbus on Dec. 21, making 22 saves in the Penguins’ 5-2 win in the final game before the holiday break. Head coach Mike Sullivan tabbed Murray again in the first postholiday contest in Minnesota on Dec. 26. The rookie answered the bell, making 14 of his 25 saves in the third period, enabling his teammates to scratch out a 3-1 victory and establish a modest two-game winning streak, Pittsburgh’s first such winning stretch in exactly a month. “These types of games can be challenging when the puck is in the other end the whole time,” Murray said. “They came pretty hard, but we were able to get some really big saves from Matt,” captain Sidney Crosby said. Three games into Murray’s NHL career his goals-against average (1.68) and save percentage (.934) resembled the impressive marks he’d posted in his brief AHL tenure (careers marks of 1.66 and .940, respectively). As we’ve learned throughout the years, you don’t know how long Fleury’s concussion will linger. He could be back by the time you read this. Or his absence could stretch well into the New Year. In the meantime, the Penguins hope their goaltender of the future can continue to be the goaltender of the present as Murray helps the team weather the storm as they search for a consistent winning formula.

ICEBURGH Iceburgh, the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins, has been entertaining hockey fans worldwide since 1992. As one of the Penguins’ most popular ambassadors, not to mention one of the NHL’s most beloved mascots, you can find Iceburgh leading cheers, beating drums and dancing in the aisles at every Penguins home game, attending major hockey events around the world, visiting local schools, or just spending time at area hospitals and community events. Iceburgh has even been asked to be a guest of honor at numerous wedding celebrations in recent years! There’s no doubt about it, Iceburgh is one busy Penguin! In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture Sudden Death. He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. Last season, during his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game in Columbus, Iceburgh helped the Eastern Conference mascots defeat the Western Conference by scoring two goals and two assists in the first annual NHL Mascot Showdown while also emerging victorious in the mascot dance competition. To request an Iceburgh appearance at your next community or special event, please complete the online request form by visiting pittsburghpenguins. com and selecting “Iceburgh” under the “Fan Zone” section.

HEADING IN THE
RIGHT DIRECTION By: Mike Prisuta
Jake Guentzel approached the Penguins’ Development Camp last summer as an opportunity to learn a little about himself and his game midway through what he anticipates will be a four-year career at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Guentzel, a third-round pick of the Penguins (77th overall) in 2013, was thinking about becoming an even better college player back in July, not about jumping to the NHL. “For sure,” Guentzel said. “I just want to enjoy it, have some fun with it and continue to grow as a player and a person.” He hit the Christmas break this season seemingly well on his way to checking all of those boxes. Guentzel, a 5-foot-11, 180-pound center, was fifth in the nation in points per game through his first 17 games (10+16, 1.53). And he was a co-captain for a Nebraska-Omaha team that was ranked No. 6 in the nation in the Dec. 14 USCHO.com Top 20 at 12-3-1 overall through 16 games (the Mavericks would go on to sweep Arizona State, playing for the first time this season as an NCAA Division I Independent, in late December). Nebraska-Omaha was fourth in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference at 4-3-1 through eight conference games. “I’m a pass-first guy,” Guentzel had said back at Development Camp. “I have to shoot the puck more. continued on page 157

“I’m trying to strengthen my body and just take over games. I feel like I’m going in the right direction. I just have to keep going.” Guentzel and Nebraska-Omaha went to the Frozen Four at the conclusion of last season for the first time in the school’s 18-year NCAA Division I history. And Guentzel scored Nebraska-Omaha’s only goal in what became a 4-1 loss to Providence, which would go on to win the national championship, in the national semifinals. Guentzel’s tally midway through the third period cut the Providence lead to 2-1. “A special year,” Guentzel assessed. “Obviously, being the first in school history, it was pretty unique to do. Obviously, you want to do whatever it takes to get back.” Guentzel has been doing his part this season. His 1.53 points-per-game average through 17 games represented an increase in production over both his freshman (7+27, 1.09) and sophomore (14+25, 1.08) campaigns. Guentzel had 99 points through his first 90 college games (1.10 per). Guentzel led the Mavericks in assists, points and plus/minus (plus-15) at this season’s Christmas break and was tied for No. 2 in the nation in short-handed goals with three (one behind Robert Morris forward Zac Lynch, of Shaler). continued on page 158
157
continued from page 157
And Guentzel matched a little Nebraska-Omaha history with a two-goal, three-assist, five-point night in a 6-4 win over Ohio State on Nov. 28. He became just the sixth Mavericks player to register a five-point game. He had also helped right winger and linemate Austin Ortega to the No. 2 spot nationally in goals per game (16 in 17, 0.94). Guentzel is one of eight NHL draftees on a Nebraska-Omaha roster that also includes 10 freshmen. Guentzel’s left winger is Fredrik Olofsson, a fourth-round pick of the Blackhawks (98th overall) in 2014. Clearly, Guentzel is at ease on NCAA ice, and he has every reason to be. His brother Ryan played collegiately for Notre Dame and his brother Gabe did the same for Colorado College. And Guentzel’s father Mike is an assistant coach at the University of Minnesota. So Jake Guentzel ought to be comfortable in the classroom and he intends to also make himself right at home in the weight room this season. “If I could put that strength and muscle on I feel like that’s going to help me in the long run,” he said. Guentzel is one of 10 Penguins’ draftees playing college hockey this season, along with: COLLEGE

The previous year, Sprong finished second among QMJHL rookies with 68 points (30G-38A-68P) in 67 games en route to being named to the League’s All-Rookie Team. BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Sprong was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands where his father, Hannie, played professional hockey in Holland in the early 1990s.
