The Series vs. Lightning
VS
The Penguins and Tampa Bay Lightning meet this evening as Pittsburgh resumes its 2016-17 schedule following its bye week. The Penguins have not played since hosting Montreal on New Year’s Eve. . . This is the second meeting of the teams this season, as the Penguins earned a 4-3 road victory over Tampa Bay on Dec. 10. Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby scored two goals each in that victory, Crosby tying the game early in the third period and Malkin winning it just over three minutes later — with both goals coming on the power play. Phil Kessel and Kris Letang had three assists each and Matt Murray made 20 saves in goal. Jonathan Drouin scored twice for Tampa Bay. . . This is the first meeting of the teams here in Pittsburgh since the Penguins’ Game Seven victory over the Lightning in the Eastern Conference Finals last spring. . . The last regular season

game between the teams here in Pittsburgh was also an afternoon game, a 4-2 Tampa Bay victory last Feb. 20 that snapped its nine-game losing streak here. Ben Bishop made 37 saves in that game while Matt Carle had a goal and an assist. . . The Penguins are 12-3-0 in their last 15 regular season home games against the Lightning. . . Tampa Bay swept the three-game series against the Penguins last season, scoring 15 goals in the process. That marked the first time the Penguins were winless in a season series against Tampa Bay since 2006-07 (0-2-2) and was also their first series loss to the Lightning since that time. . . The teams’ final meeting this season is here on March 3. . . Pittsburgh is 46-31-5 with five ties all-time against the Lightning, including a mark of 27-10-3 with three ties here at home. . . Malkin has 16 goals in his last 15 regular season games against Tampa Bay and points in each of his last 13 games against the Lightning (15-15-30).
The Penguins Next up for Pittsburgh is a three-game road trip to face the Capitals, Senators and Red Wings, followed by a home game against Washington on Jan. 16. . . Through games on Dec. 29, the Penguins were second overall in the NHL at 24-8-5, including a 16-2-2 mark for 34 points through 20 home games before facing Montreal here on New Year’s Eve. That matched the number of home points won through 20 games continued on page 8

in 1995-96 (17-3-0). . . At that point, Sidney Crosby was tied with Edmonton’s Connor McDavid for the NHL scoring lead with 42 points and was leading the NHL in goals with 26. Evgeni Malkin was third in scoring, one point behind, while Phil Kessel was eighth, six points back. . . The Penguins beat Carolina here, 3-2, on Dec. 28 in the first home game in team history to be played without a penalty being called. It was the second such game in team history, the first coming March 22, 1969 at St. Louis. . . Marc-Andre Fleury earned the victory against Carolina in relief of injured Matt Murray, giving Fleury just his second career win in relief. . . The Penguins were an NHL-leading 7-7-1 when trailing after two periods before facing Montreal. . . Justin Schultz was leading all NHL defensemen in scoring in the month of December with six goals and 17 points in 14 games before the Penguins’ final game of the month. Schultz was also ranked fifth among all players at plus-22 for the season at that point. . . Defenseman Chad Ruhwedel scored his first NHL goal in a 5-2 victory at New Jersey on Dec. 23, his 35th NHL game and second with the Penguins. . . Pittsburgh was 9-0-1 in its last 10 home games before hosting Montreal, its last regulation loss coming to the Rangers on Nov. 21 (2-5). The longest streak of points in consecutive home games in team history is 20, set by the 1974-75 team. . . The Penguins were 6-1-0 in the last seven home games in which they trailed after two periods.

Season Ticket Holder
SPOTLIGHT
With whom do you attend Penguins home games? My husband. We met because of a Penguins game 10 years ago. When I first got tickets, we were just friends. I became a season ticket holder because of him and I have loved every minute! We have so many friends we go with and we all sit together.
Erin Weber Hometown: North Huntingdon, PA Season Ticket Location: Section 204

Penguins Season Ticket Holder
What is your earliest memory of Penguins hockey? It was all new to me. The intensity and action really amazed me. The strength and endurance of this sport is intense. I really enjoyed watching the Penguins play and enjoyed all the excitement from the fans around me. I remember cow bells too. My friends are the ones who started that in D9. What motivated you to become a season ticket holder? Honestly, I fell for someone who is truly Erin and her husband, Chris at a game. one of the biggest Penguins fans and had already been a season ticket holder for years. He got me hooked on both him and the Penguins! We now have four season tickets combined. What lesser known Penguins player (past or present) has left a lasting impression on you? What did he do to make that impression? I’d have to say one of my favorites is Billy Guerin. I was just drawn to him and his demeanor. I really enjoyed watching him play and enjoy seeing him now in his new role with the organization. It’s so nice to see former players still want to be a part of the team. continued on page 15

Erin and Chris posing with Geno. continued from page 13
What is the most unique keepsake in your personal collection of Penguins memorabilia? I was able to get a picture with the Cup the last two times with my kids. It’s such a huge deal and I was just so excited to share that experience with them. They don’t know the significance of that yet, but they will someday. Erin and Chris at an away game in Buffalo. What is your favorite memory from the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoff run? My husband and I met due to the Penguins 10 years ago, and this playoff season we got married. I knew the entire season they were going to win the Cup because we were getting married and that we may have to miss a playoff game for our honeymoon. We did miss going to a playoff game, but we watched it in Vegas. That was my favorite memory this playoff run…and to have our son and baby girl with us watching that final game!
In your eyes, what makes the Pittsburgh Penguins, or hockey in general, great? The players are truly great guys and it’s a wonderful organization. I really respect that and I am very proud of our Penguins. I love that they do so much good and there are always nice things said and good articles written. You don’t always see that and hockey in general is that way. 15

MARIO LEMIEUX Co-Owner/Chairman
Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in the National Hockey League, added a new line to his Hall of Fame career last season: Two-time champion owner. The Penguins claimed the Cup for the second time since Lemieux and partner Ron Burkle bought the team out of bankruptcy in 1999. It gave him four Stanley Cups overall, including two as a player in 1991 and 1992. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice – including 10 straight playoff appearances and four conference final appearances in the past nine seasons, in addition to the two Cups. The Penguins entered the 2016-17 season having sold out every game for nineplus seasons while setting new standards for television ratings, corporate sales and social media. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open the arena in August, 2010. The facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. The Penguins ownership group, local labor organizations and members of the Pittsburgh business community honored Lemieux in 2012 with a statue to commemorate his career and contributions to the city and the region. Appropriately named “Le Magnifique,” the statue, by nationally-acclaimed sculptor Bruce Wolfe, can be seen outside of PPG Paints Arena. For full bio, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

PPG
RON BURKLE Co-Owner
Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing, technology and distribution industries, is in his 18th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports, leading the team to Stanley Cup championships in 2009 and 2016. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. PPG Paints Arena is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh, including NCAA basketball and hockey. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for nine-plus seasons and consistently ranked among the most fan-friendly and community-minded teams in the NHL and all of pro sports. The Penguins have earned 10 straight playoff berths and reached the conference finals four times in the past nine years, in addition to the two Stanley Cups. The team’s solid foundation of ownership has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign many of the team’s core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award. DAVID MOREHOUSE Chief Executive Officer & President
David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Stanley Cupchampion Penguins, overseeing all aspects of the team’s operation. The Penguins have become one of the NHL’s strongest business entities during his tenure — selling out every game for nine-plus seasons, setting new standards for television ratings and corporate sales and increasing their focus on innovative youth marketing. Morehouse joined the team as consultant on the new arena project in 2004 and was named team president in April 2007. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer just as the new arena was opening in August 2010. Under his leadership, the Penguins have reshaped their strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, community interaction, corporate outreach and cutting-edge technology, while maintaining a high level of performance on the ice. A strong commitment to fan outreach includes an annual event where players personally deliver season tickets to fans’ homes and a special preseason game were all 18,000 tickets are distributed free to local youth. Morehouse also was a driving force behind the new UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, which opened in August 2015. It is the first facility to combine hockey with a world-class medical center and sports performance complex. Morehouse joined the Penguins following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill — as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He is a native of the Pittsburgh neighborhood of Beechview.

JIM RUTHERFORD Executive Vice President & General Manager
Jim Rutherford enters his third year as Penguins executive vice president and general manager fresh off the greatest season of his managerial career. During the course of the 2015-16 campaign, Rutherford transformed the Penguins into Stanley Cup champions, thanks in large part to his acquisitions of Phil Kessel, Nick Bonino, Trevor Daley and Carl Hagelin, plus the promotion of Mike Sullivan to head coach in December of 2015. When the Penguins defeated the San Jose Sharks to win the franchise’s fourth Stanley Cup on June 12, 2016, Rutherford became the first GM in the post-1967 Expansion Era to manage multiple teams to Cup victories, having also done so with Carolina in 2006. As a reward for quick, on-the-fly re-shaping of the Penguins’ roster, Rutherford won the NHL General Manager of the Year Award for his work in ’15-16. Rutherford spent the previous 20 years as GM of the Carolina Hurricanes/ Hartford Whalers franchise from 1994-2014, where he was a key architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team. In addition to his general manager duties, he also served 20 years as president of Carolina/Hartford, taking the post in 1994. In his role as president/GM, Rutherford oversaw operations on both the hockey and business sides of the organization. Over the course of his executive career, Rutherford has won multiple awards, including The Hockey News‘ Executive of the Year in 2002 and ’06. Additionally, he was voted by his NHL general management peers as Sporting News ‘Executive of the Year’ in 2006. Before his 22 years in the NHL, Rutherford was recognized as the 1987 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Executive of the Year, and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Executive of the Year in back-to-back years with the Windsor Spitfires in 1987 and ’88. He oversaw a Spitfires team that won the OHL championship in 1988 and earned a berth in the Memorial Cup. Rutherford played 13 years as a goaltender in the NHL, appearing in 457 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit. He was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round (10th overall) of the 1969 NHL Draft. For full bio, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

JASON BOTTERILL Associate General Manager
Jason Botterill enters this third season as associate general manager having assisted GM Jim Rutherford in making numerous personnel moves over the last year that resulted in the Penguins winning the Stanley Cup in 2016, the second championship Botterill has helped build during his tenure in Pittsburgh. As associate GM, Botterill advises Rutherford on all hockey-related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. During the summer of 2015, Botterill played a leading role in hiring Mike Sullivan as head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League. Following a hot start to the season with WB/S, Sullivan was eventually promoted to Pittsburgh and helped guide the Penguins to the Stanley Cup victory. In addition to his duties in Pittsburgh, Botterill serves as the GM of WB/S, which has made the playoffs all seven years he has overseen the team, including back-to-back berths in the Eastern Conference Final in 2013 and ‘14. Prior to his promotion, Botterill spent the previous five years as the Penguins assistant GM from 2009-14, and the two years prior to that as the team’s director of hockey administration beginning in 2007-08 where he was a key architect of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team. Botterill was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the first round (20th overall) in 1994 NHL Draft and played in 88 NHL games for Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo before his career was cut short due to injury. He also suited up for 393 career minor-league games in the American and International Hockey Leagues, tallying 257 career points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four years of college hockey at the University of Michigan and helped lead the Wolverines to an NCAA title in 1996. Botterill represented Canada in three straight World Junior Championships from 1994-96, winning gold medals all three years. Following his playing career, he received his MBA from his alma mater, the University of Michigan.

Bill Guerin capped his second season as the Penguins assistant general manager by earning the first Stanley Cup championship of his executive career in 2015-16. Guerin’s responsibilities as assistant general manager include serving as a liaison between the players and management. Guerin was Pittsburgh’s player development coach from 2011-14, where he was instrumental in helping develop the Penguins’ minor league, junior and college prospects, including Tom Kuhnhackl, Bryan Rust and Conor Sheary, who all played huge roles in the 2016 championship run. Originally drafted by New Jersey in the first round (5th overall) of the 1989 NHL Draft, Guerin won two Stanley Cups (Pittsburgh, 2009; New Jersey, 1995) and spent 18 seasons in the NHL — including his final two with the Penguins. Guerin, a four-time NHL All-Star, tallied 429 career goals and 856 points in 1,263 career NHL games, including five 30-goal and two 40-goal seasons. MIKE SULLIVAN Head Coach
Mike Sullivan led the Penguins to one of the greatest in-season turnarounds in franchise history during his first year as head coach in 2015-16, a journey that resulted in a Stanley Cup victory against the San Jose Sharks on June 12, 2016. Adhering to Sullivan’s advice to ‘Just Play’, the Penguins ended the regular season with the secondbest record in the Eastern Conference and fourth-best mark in the league, in large part because of a 14-2 run to conclude the regular season. By leading the Penguins to the franchise’s fourth Cup, Sullivan became just the sixth American-born head coach to win the Stanley Cup. Prior to being promoted to Pittsburgh, Sullivan spent the first two-plus months of the 2015-16 season as the head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins. During his 23-game tenure in WB/S, his club went 18-5, which was good enough for first place in the Atlantic Division. Sullivan’s club also had a franchise-best 11-game winning streak. A native of Marshfield, Massachusetts, Sullivan began his coaching career in 2002-03, starting the season as head coach of the AHL’s Providence Bruins before joining the NHL’s Bruins as an assistant coach late in the year. He was promoted to head coach of the NHL Bruins at age 35 in 2003-04, winning a Northeast Division crown in the first of his two years at the helm. Sullivan served as an NHL assistant coach for seven-consecutive years from 2007-14 with Tampa Bay, the NY Rangers and Vancouver. In addition to his professional coaching experience, Sullivan has coached the United States three times internationally, including the 2016 World Cup of Hockey when he was an assistant coach. He was the head coach at the 2007 World Championship and an assistant coach at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turino, Italy. During the 2014-15 season, Sullivan was a member of the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks player development staff. Sullivan’s 11-year NHL career began with the expansion San Jose Sharks in 1991-92 and included stops in Calgary, Boston and Arizona. Sullivan played four years of collegiate hockey at Boston University from 1986-90, serving as the Terriers captain as a senior. Sullivan represented the U.S. as a player at the 1988 World Junior Championship. For full bio, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

RICK TOCCHET Assistant Coach
Rick Tocchet is in his third season as an assistant coach of the Penguins. In his current role, Tocchet works closely with the team’s speedy and dynamic forward group, which had eight players reach double figures in points during the 2016 playoffs, a key reason Pittsburgh was able to win the franchise’s fourth Stanley Cup, the first Cup win of Tocchet’s coaching career. Tocchet was hired as an assistant coach by Tampa Bay in July 2008 and was elevated to interim head coach on Nov. 14 of that year. He was named head coach following the ‘08-09 season, where he remained in that position until 2010. Tocchet began his coaching career as an assistant with the Colorado Avalanche for two years (2002-04) before spending one season (‘05-06) with the Phoenix Coyotes. A veteran of 18 NHL seasons, including parts of three seasons with the Penguins from 1992-94, Tocchet won a Stanley Cup championship with Pittsburgh in 1992. The four-time NHL All-Star (1989, ‘90, ‘91, ‘93) played 1,144 career NHL games and totaled 440 goals, 952 points and 2,972 penalty minutes in his NHL career. Tocchet was originally drafted by Philadelphia in the sixth round (125th overall) of the 1983 NHL Draft.
JACQUES MARTIN Assistant Coach
Jacques Martin stepped back behind the Penguins’ bench for a second tour of duty as an assistant coach in December 2015, playing a crucial role in the team’s Stanley Cup win, the first championship of Martin’s lengthy NHL career. Martin, who enters his fourth season in the Pittsburgh organization, presides over the Penguins’ defensemen and penalty killing unit in his current role. He was instrumental in Kris Letang hitting career highs in all offensive categories in 2015-16. Martin’s PK unit finished with the fifth-best success rate in the NHL. Martin has over 25 years of NHL experience as a general manager, head coach and assistant coach with Pittsburgh, Montreal, Florida, Ottawa, Colorado/Quebec, Chicago and St. Louis. He won 613 games and made 12 playoff appearances in 17 seasons as an NHL head coach. He won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s ‘most outstanding coach’ with Ottawa in 1999 and was a finalist for the award on three other occasions. Martin won gold medals as an assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2002 Olympics and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. He was also an assistant coach on the 2006 Canadian Olympic Team.

MIKE BALES Goaltending Coach Mike Bales has established himself as one of the NHL’s top goaltending coaches during his first three seasons with the team. During the Penguins’ 2016 Stanley Cup championship drive, Pittsburgh used three goaltenders who thrived under his tutelage, including rookie Matt Murray, whose 15 playoff wins equaled the NHL rookie record. Under Bales’ guidance, Marc-Andre Fleury has compiled two of the finest seasons of his career. During the 2014-15 campaign, Fleury established a franchise record with 10 shutouts, a figure that led the entire NHL. Bales began his Penguins’ career as the team’s goaltending development coach from 2011-13. Bales, a native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, spent 18 seasons playing professionally from 1992-2010, including stints in the NHL with Boston and Ottawa. LEMIEUX’S TEXTS HELPED INSPIRE
2009 PENGUINS Jason Seidling
By 2009, Penguins’ Hall of Fame owner Mario Lemieux was three years into his second and final retirement. But that didn’t stop Lemieux from playing a key role in Pittsburgh’s seven-game defeat of the Detroit Red Wings in that year’s Stanley Cup Final. In the late hours of June 6, 2009, nothing seemed further away for the Penguins than a third Stanley Cup. That evening, the high-powered Red Wings steamrolled Pittsburgh, 5-0, chasing Marc-Andre Fleury from the cage. The win put the Wings ahead in the series 3-2. From the outside, it appeared history was repeating itself. Just one year earlier, the Red Wings lifted the Stanley Cup on Mellon Arena ice following Game Six. They looked well on their way to doing so again. But in the Penguins’ darkest hour, it was Lemieux who stepped up. At a time when most owners would stay away, Lemieux came down to the Penguins’ dressing room at Joe Louis Arena and exuded a confidence in his group. “We probably just talked quickly about the game,” captain Sidney Crosby remembered. “I think it wasn’t a happy mood, but we all felt confident and calm about everything. Him coming down and showing that probably just solidified it.” continued on page 66

General manager Ray Shero thanked Lemieux for his support on the plane ride the chance of is is h T “ home, and received this text: ze your a lifetime to realis and win “See you Monday. We are a family, in this together. childhood dream Play We don’t need anyone the Stanley Cup. you who’s only with us win without fear, and l! or tie. Let’s forget about will be successfur ice.” tonight. We will win Tuesday See you at cente and win the Cup Friday.” ~ Mario Lemieux Naturally, the Penguins went out and won Game Six, 2-1, forcing a deciding Game Seven back at ‘The Joe’ on June 12. Lemieux wasn’t done inspiring his club. On the morning of Game Seven, Penguins’ players and coaches awoke to the following message from their iconic owner: “This is the chance of a lifetime to realize your childhood dreams and win the Stanley Cup. Play without fear, and you will be successful! See you at center ice.” “Just to get that, just breeding confidence among the group, that was something we probably needed more than we thought,” Crosby said. “Having lost the year before, we knew we were close again. And I think it gave us that extra boost of confidence to know he was that confident.” Max Talbot and Marc-Andre Fleury made sure those ‘childhood dreams’ were realized. Talbot became a Pittsburgh folk hero for life, scoring both of the Pengiuns’ goals, and Fleury made a dramatic, Cup-clinching diving save at the buzzer, propelling the Penguins to a 2-1 victory. The Penguins were Stanley Cup champions. It was time to fulfill Lemieux’s prophecy and meet him at center ice. “Yeah that was very cool, to have Sid search me out on the ice and give me the Cup, that was an incredible moment,” Lemieux said in the Penguins’ 50th anniversary documentary. “He was living with us at the time, and for both of us to be on the ice, achieving our dream and lifting the Stanley Cup together was a great moment.” 66

MID-WINTER CLASSIC BRINGS
NATIONAL TALENT TO PITTSBURGH
The December 16 weekend marked the second annual MidWinter Classic at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. In addition to being the last weekend before the holiday season, the tournament was also the fourth national tournament of the season held by the second-year facility. This year’s Mid-Winter Classic boasted over 50 teams, across five birth years of competition. From New Jersey to St. Louis, the dedication of these tier one programs was on full display as each team progressed through nearly 100 games combined for the weekend. Most notably three Penguins Elite teams captured championships on top of their already successful seasons. The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite captured the 2003, 2005, and 2007 divisions, while competing against teams from Chicago, Detroit, and Buffalo. In the 2004 division, the Connecticut Oilers beat the St. Louis Jr. Blues. Honourable mentions are extended to the Jr. Sabres and Chicago Fury. The 2006 birth year also showcased impressive teams, with Team Montgomery edging Team Virtua 3-2 in overtime to take the championship. With Pittsburgh programs taking championships across three birth years, there is more excitement and higher expectations than ever for the players, community, and participating programs. Looking back, this city has never seen a high level of talent in such large numbers here for one weekend. For the second year in a row, the area has grown the game at both the tier one and tier two levels, as shown in our tournament numbers and year-after-year success. Building on that success has led the city to five active NHL players, numerous AHL players, countless NCAA commitments, USHL and NAHL players, and the growth of the high-level prospects across the nation. Looking forward, the city’s trajectory looks to rival the programs of Chicago, Detroit, and Buffalo, while establishing itself as the next best Mid-American hockey hub. 70

Penguins Profile:
STEVE OLEKSY AND CHAD RUHWEDEL
Mark Madden As 2017 approached, the Penguins were unusually healthy. That didn’t last. In pro hockey, it never does. Kris Letang got hurt in the Dec. 14 game against Boston. Trevor Daley was injured in the Dec. 16 game vs. Los Angeles. That’s lots of good minutes lost on defense. Next man up, as the saying goes. The next men up were Steve Oleksy and Chad Ruhwedel. Both spent time with the Penguins’ Wilkes-Barre/Scranton farm club this season. Both played major college hockey. Both went undrafted. Both have limited NHL experience. For them, a decimated depth chart spelled opportunity. Each certainly made the most of it when the Penguins beat visiting New Jersey on Dec. 23. Ruhwedel netted his first NHL goal in the 4-1 victory, while Oleksy got in a knock-down, drag-out brawl with the Devils’ Miles Wood. Oleksy, 30, doesn’t mind dropping the mitts: He fought the previous night in Columbus, too. Oleksy’s fight with Wood started when the Penguins’ Ian Cole aggressively kept ex-Penguin Beau Bennett away from the net. Wood took exception, and Oleksy cut him off. “[Wood] came around the net pretty hot,” said the 6-foot, 190-pound Oleksy. “I thought he was going to go after Ian, so it was an opportunity for me to step in there. “Any time there are guys going hard to the net, we want to make sure they pay a price. We want to protect our goalie. I’d Chad rather be the one doing it than Ian Cole.” RUHWEDEL Coach Mike Sullivan was pleased with Oleksy’s performance, saying, “He’s an inspiring guy. He plays the game so hard. He wears his emotion on his sleeve. He sticks up for his teammates. continued on page 79

“Steve is just a great teammate. That’s one of the reasons he’s here. He’s a great character guy. He’s all in.” Oleksy, a Michigan product, played college hockey at Lake Superior State. Prior to joining the Penguins’ system last season, he played 62 games with Washington. Ruhwedel, meanwhile, zipped home a wrist shot from the right point with 39 seconds left in the second period to give the Penguins a 3-1 lead. Ruhwedel’s goal was the first of his NHL career. Before signing with the Penguins this past off-season, Ruhwedel played 33 games with Buffalo. “It’s been a while, and it feels good to get that first [NHL] goal out of the way,” said Ruhwedel (5-11, 191). “It gave us a little insurance, and then Horny [Patric Hornqvist] gave us a little more insurance in the third. It was a good win.” Ruhwedel, 26, absorbs life with the Penguins one game at a time. “I’m just going to take what’s given to me,” Ruhwedel said. “Do my best. I’m sure I’ll get what I earn. It’s an honest organization, and I’m just going to play my game.” Ruhwedel hails from San Diego. He played collegiately at UMass-Lowell. He feels the Penguins’ up-tempo style suits him. “[The Penguins] are offensive and fast-paced, and that’s the kind of hockey I like to play,” Ruhwedel said. “With a couple big-name guys who log a lot of minutes out, it opens up some opportunity. You just go out there, take what you’re given and play hard.” Unfortunately for the Penguins, the opportunities for Oleksy and Ruhwedel won’t dry up anytime soon. Defenseman Brian Dumoulin took a puck to the face during the Penguins’ 5-2 win at New Jersey on Dec. 27, and will be out 4-6 weeks with a broken jaw. Oleksy played 10 games for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this season, posting a goal and three assists. As of Dec. 27, he had one assist in five games with Pittsburgh. Ruhwedel suited up 26 times for the WB/S Penguins, registering three goals and 10 helpers. He had one goal and one assist in his first three NHL games this season. Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

The home of the Pittsburgh Penguins, formerly known as CONSOL Energy Center since the facilities inception in 2010, will now be known as PPG Paints Arena. “It’s exciting to be the first to be able to say welcome to the PPG Paints Arena,” Penguins president and CEO David Morehouse said. “We’re very excited to announce this partnership with PPG. “PPG is a part of Pittsburgh’s history. It’s ingrained in the fabric of Pittsburgh. With this arena it will allow them to protect and beautify the world.” PPG, which is also the official paint supplier of the Penguins, signed a 20-year agreement with the team for the naming rights to the multipurpose arena, which was the key structure in keeping the Penguins in Pittsburgh in perpetuity. “We’re very proud of this day,” PPG vice president of corporate and government affairs Bryan Iams said. “It’s always a great day for hockey, and it’s a great day for PPG.” Various companies approached the Penguins with an interest in the building naming rights, in case an opportunity were ever to present itself. But PPG took things to the next level. After PPG made a strong offer, the team approached CONSOL Energy, whose business priorities were changing. continued on page 91

“Between the three of us we were able to put this deal together,” Morehouse said. “It’s truly a great collaborative effort between our staff, PPG staff and CONSOL Energy staff to pull this together.” PPG Paints will not only have its name across the building’s spine, but it will appear all throughout - fan entrances, roof, signage, center ice, dasher boards, etc. PPG will also have a presence in the team’s UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry. PPG had already worked with the Penguins upon the construction of the arena, providing the paint throughout the building. “We’ve helped the Pittsburgh Penguins protect and beautify this building since the arena opened in 2010,” PPG executive vice president Viktor Sekmakas said. “We consulted the Penguins as they chose paint colors used throughout the arena when it was being designed. Our coatings and products protect the building’s structural steel from rust and ultraviolet exposure.” PPG Paints Arena was the first NHL building to earn an LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, thanks in part to PPG. PPG, which has been in operation for more than 130 years, is headquartered in Pittsburgh with reach to over 70 countries around the world. “It’s a company that we want to be partners with,” Morehouse said. “It’s a long-time Pittsburgh company from the 1880s. We’re happy to partner with an iconic brand like PPG.” While CONSOL Energy will no longer own the naming rights to the arena, the company and team still have a strong partnership for the next 14 years. “We knew from our close relationship with CONSOL Energy that their business priorities were changing,” Morehouse said. “We talked to them about transitioning some of the things we were doing for them to be more community and employee-engagement oriented. “We want to thank CONSOL Energy, who’s been a great partner of ours. CONSOL Energy has been with us for about eight years, for the last six as the naming right’s partner of this building. They helped us build this building. Without a relationship with CONSOL Energy it would have been difficult to have the revenues we needed to generate in order to have this new arena built.” 91

Pittsburgh obtained Mullen from the Calgary Flames on June 16, 1990, adding to a roster which would win two Stanley Cups in the next two seasons. One of Mullen’s most impressive feats was scoring four goals in back-toback games during the 1991-92 season, becoming the first Penguin to do so. On Feb. 7, 1995 against the Florida Panthers, Mullen became the first American-born player to record 1,000 or more points. Just two years later, Mullen become the first American-born player to score 500 goals on March 14, 1997 against the Colorado Avalanche. The Hall of Famer, who also served as an assistant coach for the Penguins, ranks 13th in team history with 153 career goals and is tied for 10th with 22 game-winning goals. 93

Penguins’ Rookie of the Year (1970)
CA
Pos: C
Years Played for Penguins:
1969-70
Other Teams: None
Briere was taken by Pittsburgh 26th overall in the 1969 NHL Draft. The Malartic, Quebec native led the Penguins in assists (32) in his first and only NHL season. During the 1970 playoffs, Briere had a team-leading eight points (5G-3A), with three of his five goals being game-winners. On April 12, 1970, the centerman scored eight minutes into overtime to give the Penguins a 3-2 victory over the California Golden Seals in Game Four of the second round. After an incredible rookie season, Briere was injured in an auto accident and later passed away at just 21 years old. Today the Penguins’ Rookie of the Year award is named after Briere and his tremendous impact on Pittsburgh. Briere’s No. 21 is also one of only two numbers retired by the franchise along with Mario Lemieux’s No. 66. 95

In 2015, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and the Allegheny Intermediate Unit introduced the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation (PFF) STEAM Lending Library to schools districts in Allegheny County. This oneof-a-kind, first in the nation, program has given students the opportunity to explore technology that they may have never had access to otherwise. Stressing the importance of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math) learning in the region, the Library gives teachers the opportunity to borrow technology to use in their classrooms. The PPF STEAM Lending Library contains nearly 1,000 items, and to date, has impacted educators from 40 schools districts in Allegheny County.
Entering its third year, Tablets in Education has provided elementary students in 11 counties the opportunity to enhance their education through technology. Since its inception in 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation has donated over 3,900 Kindle Fire tablets to over 200 school districts and special needs programs in the region; impacting over 100,000 students. Along with the support from the Allegheny Intermediate Unit, Tablets in Education continues to change the way students in our region learn. MIKE LANGE Penguins Radio Network Play-by-Play Announcer
One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 42nd season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.
PHIL BOURQUE Penguins Radio Network Color Analyst
Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 14th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey. 111
JOSH GETZOFF Radio Broadcast Host and PensTV Host

HOCKEY ETIQUETTE 101 Our goal? To create an awesome game experience for all fans! Help make that happen by remembering the following: 1.
DO NOT ENTER OR EXIT THE SEATING AREA DURING PLAY! Hockey is fast — and goals can be missed in an instant. Fans moving through rows and up aisles can block the view of an entire seating area. Wait until the whistle blows to make your move. HINT #1: The red light above the penalty boxes is lit for TV timeouts. TV timeouts occur at the first whistle stops inside the 14:00, 10:00, and 6:00 minute mark of each period, EXCEPT following an icing call or goal. When the light comes on, this is your chance to make a dash to the restroom or your seats! HINT #2: The concourse TVs feature a countdown clock during the intermissions. Smart, huh? Thank the season ticket holders for recommending this awesome idea!
118
2.
NO LEANING! We know you are into the game, but leaning creates a ripple effect, affecting the view of the fans in the rows behind you. Sit back so all can enjoy the game!
3.
Keep your eyes on the puck! Pucks can hurt when they enter the seating area!
4.
PPG Paints Arena is a non-smoking facility; smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, is prohibited.
5.
It’s hard to like fans of the opposing team, we get it. However, we think it is pretty cool that they chose to come to our building. Be aware of children sitting around you and let the guys on the ice do the talking!
6.
Cheer, clap and let the players know you are here! Hockey is the best sport to watch live — have fun!

Since 2012, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered to build a total of 12 dek hockey rinks for local communities through their unique Project Power Play program. Project Power Play is a $2.3 million initiative that was designed to build one dozen dek rinks in Pittsburgh and the surrounding communities over a four-year period. To support the program, Highmark provided $1.5 million in funding. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation also provided funding for the project. The City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and surrounding communities provided the land as well as maintenance services, lighting and additional support. The rinks are multi-purpose courts and are suitable for hockey and other sports; including, soccer and lacrosse. All rink sites were chosen based on a community’s need for this type of facility and a local commitment to develop youth programming. Citiparks and local athletic associations continue to program the rinks, with the assistance from the Penguins organization.

REVIEW
Mike Prisuta
As they readied to turn the calendar from 2016 to 2017 there was much to like about the Penguins’ collective game, including an aspect they’d prefer to have to rely upon as infrequently as possible. n The Penguins were second in the NHL overall through 35 games with a record of 22-8-5, good for 49 points. n They’d scored an NHL-best 52 goals in December through their first 12 games in the month. n They’d fashioned a 9-1-2 record through those first 12 December tests, a record that trailed only Columbus (11-0-0) and Minnesota (10-0-1) in 2016’s final month. n They’d won 26 of their last 36 games against Metropolitan Division competition (26-9-1). n And they’d won 51 times in 51 tries over the past two seasons when leading after two periods, including a record of 12-0-0 when ahead after 40 minutes this season.

The Penguins had done all of that, in part, because of their ability to bounce back immediately from performances that fall short of measuring up to their established standard. The most recent example of that characteristic was in action prior to a Dec. 27 visit to New Jersey had been a 4-1 victory over the Devils on Dec. 23. That performance had been in response to a 7-1 loss on Dec. 22 at Columbus. It was nothing less than what head coach Mike Sullivan had anticipated, given the makeup of his team. “Once again I’ll give credit to our leadership group,” Sullivan said. “We trust this group of players, they always respond the right way. They’re a proud group and they have high expectations of one another. “It starts there, with ‘Sid’ (captain Sidney Crosby) and ‘Geno’ (Evgeni Malkin) and Phil Kessel and ‘Cully’ (Matt Cullen) and Chris Kunitz, (Patric) Hornqvist. These guys, they’re good pros. I think they lead the charge there when it comes to making sure we respond the right way.” The response against the Devils was the fourth the Penguins had mustered up in four tries this season when such a bounce-back effort had been required. They followed up a 4-0 loss on Oct. 18 at Montreal, their first in regulation this season, with a 3-2 win over San Jose on Oct. 20. continued on page 167

They lost, 7-1, on Nov. 16 at Washington but came back to beat the New York Islanders, 3-2 in overtime, on Nov. 18. And they followed up a 6-2 loss on Nov. 25 at Minnesota with a 4-3 shootout victory over New Jersey on Nov. 26. That ability to respond as necessary had been a factor in the Penguins not having lost consecutive games in regulation through 35 games. Only three times in that span had the Penguins lost back-to-back games — Nov. 17-18 (4-3 to Colorado in overtime, 4-0 at Montreal), Nov. 19-21 (2-1 at Buffalo in a shootout, 5-2 to the New York Rangers) and Dec. 16-17 (1-0 to Los Angeles in overtime, 2-1 at Toronto in overtime). The tone in such situations is often set by Crosby, and that’s something Crosby often manages to accomplish long before he scores a goal. “I don’t know if you guys have noticed, we tend to start him a fair amount,” Sullivan joked with the media recently. “One of the reasons we do is because he usually wins the opening face-off and we usually grab momentum right off the bat, he’s that dynamic of a player. I just think it’s another indication of his leadership. “He’s a driven guy. He’s the heartbeat of this team. And when he plays the game the way he’s playing it right now he’s inspiring to the group.” The Penguins are a confident group because of Crosby’s inspiration and leadership, and because of what they’ve achieved individually and collectively previously. They know what it takes in a myriad of situations and especially when the previous effort has been representative of less than their collective best. “We have a good team, we know it,” Sullivan said. “When we play the game Sidney the right way we can play CROSBY with anybody.” 167

OPERATION SHOEBOX
BRIGHTENING THE HOLIDAYS FOR SENIORS Staff members from all departments of the Penguins’ organization donated beautifully wrapped shoebox presents for the Christmas holiday to the senior residents at Concordia of Franklin Park in Sewickley. Over 50 shoebox gifts were collected by the Penguins Foundation as team staffers filled their empty shoeboxes with a continued on page 179

variety of gifts suited towards the seniors’ lifestyle at Concordia. Shoe box gifts were filled with newly purchased items including comforters, slippers, socks, stationary, books, games, lotions, candy, cookies and holiday ornaments. Each box was marked for either a male or female as all gifts were anonymous. Dec. 19 marked the ninth consecutive year that Penguins front office personnel have delivered shoebox gifts to senior living facilities in the Pittsburgh area, making the holidays a little brighter for those missing family and friends.
Operation Shoebox was a huge success and a great time was had by all! 179

PENGUINS IN THE CLASSROOM …
TEACHING STEAM!
Chartiers Valley Middle School
Chartiers Valley Middle School’s STEAM classroom kicked off the school year with the Penguin’s Future Goals — Hockey Scholar program for a unit on how math intersects with the real world. Students greatly enjoyed the interactive simulations and game-like environment in which these lessons are taught. One student said, “I enjoy math. I enjoy hockey. It’s nice to see them used together in real life!” Many of the students are avid Penguins fans and this program has built off of that passion to make learning fun. Teachers enjoy the fact that lessons can be self-paced, allowing students who are advanced to go at a faster pace and students who need more time to move without being rushed. The review exams at the end of each section also give students immediate feedback on their learning progress. “I love how Future Goals makes real life connections to show us how math is used in real life settings all over the world,” said another STEAM class student. Hockey Scholar is a digital resource that provides students an opportunity to experience different aspects of hockey while immersing themselves in problem solving situations involving engineering, math and science. If you’re a 5th-8th grade teacher, learn how to bring Future Goals to your classroom by visiting futuregoals.nhl.com/penguins!

HORNQVIST’S
ENERGY DRIVES
PENGUINS Bryanna McDermott
Patric Hornqvist is usually considered a goaltender’s worst nightmare. The 29-year-old is a net-front presence that is not to be reckoned with; however, in his first-ever hockey game, Hornqvist was the goalie. “My first game I played in net because my dad was a goalie when he was younger,” Hornqvist said, laughing as he recalled the memory. “We lost by probably two digits and that was the last game in net for me.” Thankfully, Hornqvist had much more success as a forward. He was taken in the seventh round of the 2005 NHL Draft by Nashville, playing for Djurgården’s J20 team in Sweden before moving to America in 2008 in hopes of making the Predators roster. After six seasons in Nashville, Hornqvist and Nick Spaling were traded to Pittsburgh in exchange for James Neal on June 27, 2014. The exchange gave Pittsburgh a gritty forward willing to put in the work to help his team win. “I think it’s just my personality,” said Hornqvist about his style of play. “I like to be in the scrums and bring energy to the team. We are all very different people on the ice, with both teams, so we all have to bring something different to the game. Obviously that’s what I bring and I’ve been like that my whole life.” Hornqvist’s exuberant personality both on and off the ice was a tremendous asset to the Penguins during the 2015-16 season. Hornqvist had 22 goals and 51 points before adding 13 points (9G-4A) during Pittsburgh’s run to the Stanley Cup. “That was a dream come true,” Hornqvist said. “That’s why we all play. We grow up and love the game. Then we get competitive and we want to play in the NHL. Then we want to win the Stanley Cup. It’s just a dream come true and you want to do it again.” Hornqvist started strong to begin the 2016-17 season. In the first 16 games of the season, he had five goals and 13 points before being sidelined with a concussion on Nov. 16. He missed six games due to the injury, but didn’t skip a beat when returning to the lineup. 188
In his first game back on Nov. 30, he notched an assist and three hits against the Islanders. The next night, Hornqvist posted a power-play goal and an assist in a 6-2 win over Dallas. However, with good times also come the bad. Hornqvist went through a small slump, going scoreless for five games between Dec. 10 and Dec. 20. “Obviously those games I didn’t play as well as I had before,” Hornqvist said. “You’re going to go through those parts of the season. It’s a long season. You just have to get your head on straight and think positive. That’s the hardest thing. We play so many games, and you go through stretches where you play really good and sometimes you don’t play as well. It feels like you’re always doing the same things out there, but the points don’t come as easy. We’re winning games and we’re in a good stretch here. I have to be better and I will be.” Since overcoming his scoring slump by notching a power-play goal against the Rangers on Dec. 20 and being switched to Evgeni Malkin’s line, Hornqvist is feeling better about his play, but still looking to improve. “Lately it’s been a little bit better,” Hornqvist said. “I think when I play with ‘Geno’, we get some chemistry and move the puck around. I think we have to get our offensive time a little longer. When you get longer zone time, then continued on page 191
189
continued from page 189
it creates those second and third chances and spread them out and go from there. Every team is so good defensively. When you come on the rush, they have people back, so you have to make sure you get long attacks and create the scoring chances from there.” As of Dec. 29, Hornqvist had 21 points (8G-13A) in 31 games played this season and is enjoying his time in Pittsburgh, especially being able to play on a team with his best friend and countryman, Carl Hagelin. The two met nearly four years ago while training at a gym in Sweden during the offseason and have been close ever since. “He’s a great guy on and off the ice,” Hornqvist said of Hagelin. “He’s probably my best friend. We haven’t been friends that long, but from the first day I met him I knew we were going to be best friends. We like the same kinds of things, and sometimes it almost feels like we’re the same person. We clicked right away and he will be my good friend for a long time.” With a bolstering personality, passion for the game and his best friend by his side, Hornqvist is ready to take on the rest of the season. 191
Heads UP Pittsburgh is a first of its kind program that has served as a blueprint for other NHL and professional organizations since its creation in 2010. In partnership with UPMC Sports Medicine and funded by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, the program has helped reduce the amount of concussions in youth sports by providing free baseline concussion testing to young athletes.
Since 2011, the Heads UP Pittsburgh has had great results in the youth sports community. n Over 125,000 individual players, coaches, and parents have been impacted by the free baseline testing and educational programs n Athletes in 30+ sports have been tested through funding from the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation n Over 12,000 conditioning aids, including flexibility kits, neck strengthening kits, and core strength balance discs have been distributed n New pediatric version of the baseline test targeted for athletes ages seven to nine is now available
