The Series vs. Predators Tonight the Penguins and Nashville Predators meet for the second and final time this regular season, and the only time in Pittsburgh. The Predators claimed a 5-1 home victory over Pittsburgh on Oct. 22, as Viktor Arvidsson and Kevin Fiala each had two goals and P.K. Subban and Filip Forsberg had two assists each. Nashville scored four goals in the second period of that game, and Predators’ goaltender Juuse Saros made 34 saves. . . Pittsburgh had won seven of its last eight games against Nashville prior to that October loss, allowing a total of just 13 goals in those eight games. . . The Penguins are 4-1-1 in their last six home games against the Predators, including a victory in their last home game against them on March 31, 2016 (5-2). Phil Kessel had two goals and Kris Letang and Nick Bonino each had a goal and an assist in that game. . . Former Penguin James Neal had a goal and an assist in that Nashville loss and also fired a shot off Marc-Andre Fleury’s mask that led to a concussion and marked Fleury’s last start of the regular season. . . to Nashville since the 2003-04 season, which included a 9-4 loss here in Pittsburgh on March 4, 2004. Pittsburgh allowed a team-record six power play goals in that game. . . Pittsburgh has scored first in eight of its last 11 games against the Predators. . . Patric Hornqvist played the first 363 games of his NHL career with the Predators, scoring 106 goals. He had 58 goals in his first 186 games with the Penguins. . . The Penguins have killed 21 of 23 Nashville power plays in the last six games between the teams here in Pittsburgh. . . Sidney Crosby, who missed the Penguinsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; game in Nashville earlier this season, has one goal in his last seven games against the Predators but has eight points in that span. . . Evgeni Malkin had points in seven straight games against Nashville (4+7) before being held off the scoresheet in Nashville back in October. . . Pittsburgh is 11-10-1 with two ties in 24 all-time games against Nashville.

The Penguins This is Pittsburghâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first game after the NHL All-Star Game in Los Angeles last weekend. The Penguins are 23-12-6 all-time in their first game after the All-Star Game and have won seven straight. . . Pittsburgh will host Columbus on Feb. 3 and then travel to St. Louis for a game the following night before returning home to host Calgary on Feb. 7. . . continued on page 8

Conor Sheary was arguably the hottest goal-scorer in the league after scoring twice in a 5-1 home win over Boston on Jan. 22, giving him nine goals in his last nine games and 17 on the season. . . Matt Murray had allowed just three goals in his last three starts after the victory over Boston and before the Penguins hosted St. Louis on Jan. 24. . . Pittsburgh had scored 24 goals in its last four games before facing the Blues. The Penguins were averaging a leaguebest 3.63 goals per game at that point. The highestscoring team in Pittsburgh history was the 1995-96 team, which averaged 4.41 goals per game. . . After the victory over the Bruins on Jan. 22, Crosby and Malkin were tied for second place in the NHL scoring race with 54 points, two behind the Oilers’ Connor McDavid. . . The last time teammates finished 1-2 in the scoring race was in 2012-13 with Tampa Bay’s Martin St. Louis and Steven Stamkos. . . Defenseman Brian Dumoulin was hoping to return to the lineup last week after suffering a broken jaw, while Kris Letang was hoping to return soon from a lower body injury, and Matt Cullen remained out with a broken foot. . . The 5-1 win over the Bruins stretched the Penguins’ streak of points earned in consecutive home games to 14 (13-0-1), matching the second-longest such streak (13-0-1 in 1990-91). The team record is 20 (12-0-8), set in 1974-75. . . Malkin had points in seven straight games (6+5), his longest streak of the season, before facing the Blues on Jan. 24. . . Eric Fehr recorded his 200th NHL point in a 7-1 road win over Carolina on Jan. 20 – the Penguins’ biggest offensive output ever in a road game against Carolina. 8

What is your favorite memory of Penguins hockey? I think my most favorite memory was seeing Mario Lemieux play his first game for the Penguins. Everything after that is just gravy for me. What motivated you to become a season ticket holder? Seeing them win the Cups in 1991 and 1992 just made me want to be able to see them in person more than a couple of games a year. Initially, I split a season with another person who had tickets, and then a few years later I got the tickets in my own name.

Aside from on-ice action, what do you enjoy most about attending Penguins games? Meeting up with all the great Penguins’ fans and developing lasting friendships with them thanks to games. What lesser known Penguins player (past or present) has left a lasting impression on you? What did he do to Maureen with her nephew Sean and Marc-Andre make that impression? Fleury at the 2016 Fan Fest. Shean Donovan was at a DICK’s Sporting Goods, and I took a nephew who was a hockey player to get his autograph. It wasn’t busy so he actually spent over half an hour talking to my nephew about hockey. He was just so interested and I thought that was incredible. continued on page 15

I took my nephew to the next home game after the autograph signing, and we went down closer to the ice to see practice. As Donovan was coming off the ice he actually recognized my nephew and said hello to him. My nephew was so excited, and I never forgot that. What is the most unique keepsake in your personal collection of Penguins memorabilia? I have a whole room full of Penguins memorabilia, but I love my game-used Marty Straka signed stick. He was also one of my favorites when he played. What has been your favorite off-ice Penguins event to attend and why? I think meeting Ron Francis at an autograph signing event at the car show in Pittsburgh. He was by far my favorite player, and to meet him in person was even better than I expected. He was the most wonderful and sincere person. What is your favorite memory from the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoff run? Obviously, every game was so much fun to watch but I think for me it was when Sid handed the Cup to Trevor Daley knowing about the situation with Trevorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mom. It just told me all I needed to know about how great Sid is. As far as my favorite game, I would say eliminating Washington with the OT goal by Nick Bonino. In your eyes, what makes the Pittsburgh Penguins, or hockey in general, great? The players are just wonderful human beings and to me the sport is the best going. The action and everything about it is just great. I love all sports, but hockey to me is head and shoulders above every other one. 15

G Henrik Lundqvist became the first goalie in NHL history to win at least 20 games in his first 12 seasons in the league when he shut out the Red Wings, 1-0, on Jan. 22. Lundqvist joined Martin Brodeur and Tony Esposito among goalies who had won 20 or more games for 12 straight seasons at any point in their careers. Brodeur did it from 1995-96 through 2007-08 and Esposito from 1969-70 through 1980-81. Teams had combined to score at least 10 goals 34 times in 706 games this season (4.8 percent). That occurred only 3.2 percent of the time in 1,320 games last season (39 times). Columbus’ 7-6 overtime win on Jan. 22 at Ottawa made it four consecutive days that a team had scored at least seven goals (Washington on Jan. 19, the Penguins on Jan. 20 and Edmonton on Jan. 21), the first time that had happened since Nov. 17-20, 2010.

The Capitals’ seven-goal outburst on Jan. 19 against St. Louis (in a 7-3 victory) coupled with their 8-7 overtime loss to the Penguins on Jan. 16 marked the first time Washington had scored seven in two consecutive games since Feb. 11-13, 1993.

Vancouver C Henrik Sedin became the first player in franchise history to reach 1,000 career points (233-767—1,000) with a goal in the Canucks’ 2-1 win over the Panthers on Jan. 20. Sedin joined Mats Sundin (564-785—1,349), Daniel Alfredsson (444-713—1,157) and Nicklas Lidstrom (264-878— 1,142) among Swedish-born players to reach the 1,000-point milestone.

MARIO LEMIEUX Co-Owner/Chairman

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in the National Hockey League, added a new line to his Hall of Fame career last season: Two-time champion owner. The Penguins claimed the Cup for the second time since Lemieux and partner Ron Burkle bought the team out of bankruptcy in 1999. It gave him four Stanley Cups overall, including two as a player in 1991 and 1992. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice – including 10 straight playoff appearances and four conference final appearances in the past nine seasons, in addition to the two Cups. The Penguins entered the 2016-17 season having sold out every game for nineplus seasons while setting new standards for television ratings, corporate sales and social media. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open the arena in August, 2010. The facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. RON BURKLE Co-Owner

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing, technology and distribution industries, is in his 18th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports, leading the team to Stanley Cup championships in 2009 and 2016. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. PPG Paints Arena is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh, including NCAA basketball and hockey. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for nine-plus seasons and consistently ranked among the most fan-friendly and community-minded teams in the NHL and all of pro sports. The Penguins have earned 10 straight playoff berths and reached the conference finals four times in the past nine years, in addition to the two Stanley Cups. The team’s solid foundation of ownership has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign many of the team’s core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Stanley Cupchampion Penguins, overseeing all aspects of the team’s operation. JIM RUTHERFORD Executive Vice President & General Manager

Jim Rutherford enters his third year as Penguins executive vice president and general manager fresh off the greatest season of his managerial career. During the course of the 2015-16 campaign, Rutherford transformed the Penguins into Stanley Cup champions, thanks in large part to his acquisitions of Phil Kessel, Nick Bonino, Trevor Daley and Carl Hagelin, plus the promotion of Mike Sullivan to head coach in December of 2015. When the Penguins defeated the San Jose Sharks to win the franchise’s fourth Stanley Cup on June 12, 2016, Rutherford became the first GM in the post-1967 Expansion Era to manage multiple teams to Cup victories, having also done so with Carolina in 2006. As a reward for quick, on-the-fly re-shaping of the Penguins’ roster, Rutherford won the NHL General Manager of the Year Award for his work in ’15-16. Rutherford spent the previous 20 years as GM of the Carolina Hurricanes/ Hartford Whalers franchise from 1994-2014, where he was a key architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team. In addition to his general manager duties, he also served 20 years as president of Carolina/Hartford, taking the post in 1994. In his role as president/GM, Rutherford oversaw operations on both the hockey and business sides of the organization. Over the course of his executive career, Rutherford has won multiple awards, including The Hockey News‘ Executive of the Year in 2002 and ’06. Additionally, he was voted by his NHL general management peers as Sporting News ‘Executive of the Year’ in 2006. Before his 22 years in the NHL, Rutherford was recognized as the 1987 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Executive of the Year, and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Executive of the Year in back-to-back years with the Windsor Spitfires in 1987 and ’88. He oversaw a Spitfires team that won the OHL championship in 1988 and earned a berth in the Memorial Cup. Rutherford played 13 years as a goaltender in the NHL, appearing in 457 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit. JASON BOTTERILL Associate General Manager

Jason Botterill enters this third season as associate general manager having assisted GM Jim Rutherford in making numerous personnel moves over the last year that resulted in the Penguins winning the Stanley Cup in 2016, the second championship Botterill has helped build during his tenure in Pittsburgh. As associate GM, Botterill advises Rutherford on all hockey-related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. During the summer of 2015, Botterill played a leading role in hiring Mike Sullivan as head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League. Following a hot start to the season with WB/S, Sullivan was eventually promoted to Pittsburgh and helped guide the Penguins to the Stanley Cup victory. In addition to his duties in Pittsburgh, Botterill serves as the GM of WB/S, which has made the playoffs all seven years he has overseen the team, including back-to-back berths in the Eastern Conference Final in 2013 and ‘14. Prior to his promotion, Botterill spent the previous five years as the Penguins assistant GM from 2009-14, and the two years prior to that as the team’s director of hockey administration beginning in 2007-08 where he was a key architect of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team. Botterill was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the first round (20th overall) in 1994 NHL Draft and played in 88 NHL games for Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo before his career was cut short due to injury. He also suited up for 393 career minor-league games in the American and International Hockey Leagues, tallying 257 career points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four years of college hockey at the University of Michigan and helped lead the Wolverines to an NCAA title in 1996. Botterill represented Canada in three straight World Junior Championships from 1994-96, winning gold medals all three years. Following his playing career, he received his MBA from his alma mater, the University of Michigan.

BILL GUERIN Assistant General Manager

Bill Guerin capped his second season as the Penguins assistant general manager by earning the first Stanley Cup championship of his executive career in 2015-16. Guerin’s responsibilities as assistant general manager include serving as a liaison between the players and management. Guerin was Pittsburgh’s player development coach from 2011-14, where he was instrumental in helping develop the Penguins’ minor league, junior and college prospects, including Tom Kuhnhackl, Bryan Rust and Conor Sheary, who all played huge roles in the 2016 championship run. Originally drafted by New Jersey in the first round (5th overall) of the 1989 NHL Draft, Guerin won two Stanley Cups (Pittsburgh, 2009; New Jersey, 1995) and spent 18 seasons in the NHL — including his final two with the Penguins. Guerin’s leadership and on-ice performance after being acquired at the NHL trade deadline was a key in Pittsburgh’s ’09 title. Guerin, a four-time NHL All-Star, tallied 429 career goals and 856 points in 1,263 career NHL games, including five 30-goal and two 40-goal seasons. He was elected to the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 2013.

JASON KARMANOS Vice President Of Hockey Operations

Jason Karmanos begins his third season as the Penguins vice president of hockey operations having won the Stanley Cup for the second time in his executive career, after originally winning a championship with Carolina in 2006. Karmanos assists GM Jim Rutherford in all aspects of hockey operations as one of the leaders in the Penguins’ implementation of advance statistics and analysis. Before joining Pittsburgh, Karmanos spent 15 years as an executive for the Carolina Hurricanes from 1998-2013, serving various roles with Carolina, including executive director of hockey operations and vice president/assistant general manager under Rutherford. Karmanos played four years of college hockey at Harvard University from 1992-96, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors. In 1994, Karmanos represented Team USA at the World Junior Championships, compiling three points (1G-2A) in seven games. After graduating, Karmanos attended training camp with the Penguins in 1996 and played pro hockey for two seasons before his career was cut short due to an eye injury.

MIKE SULLIVAN Head Coach

Mike Sullivan led the Penguins to one of the greatest in-season turnarounds in franchise history during his first year as head coach in 2015-16, a journey that resulted in a Stanley Cup victory against the San Jose Sharks on June 12, 2016. Adhering to Sullivan’s advice to ‘Just Play’, the Penguins ended the regular season with the secondbest record in the Eastern Conference and fourth-best mark in the league, in large part because of a 14-2 run to conclude the regular season. By leading the Penguins to the franchise’s fourth Cup, Sullivan became just the sixth American-born head coach to win the Stanley Cup. Prior to being promoted to Pittsburgh, Sullivan spent the first two-plus months of the 2015-16 season as the head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins. During his 23-game tenure in WB/S, his club went 18-5, which was good enough for first place in the Atlantic Division. Sullivan’s club also had a franchise-best 11-game winning streak. A native of Marshfield, Massachusetts, Sullivan began his coaching career in 2002-03, starting the season as head coach of the AHL’s Providence Bruins before joining the NHL’s Bruins as an assistant coach late in the year. He was promoted to head coach of the NHL Bruins at age 35 in 2003-04, winning a Northeast Division crown in the first of his two years at the helm. Sullivan served as an NHL assistant coach for seven-consecutive years from 2007-14 with Tampa Bay, the NY Rangers and Vancouver. In addition to his professional coaching experience, Sullivan has coached the United States three times internationally, including the 2016 World Cup of Hockey when he was an assistant coach. He was the head coach at the 2007 World Championship and an assistant coach at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turino, Italy. During the 2014-15 season, Sullivan was a member of the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks player development staff. Sullivan’s 11-year NHL career began with the expansion San Jose Sharks in 1991-92 and included stops in Calgary, Boston and Arizona. Sullivan played four years of collegiate hockey at Boston University from 1986-90, serving as the Terriers captain as a senior. RICK TOCCHET Assistant Coach

Rick Tocchet is in his third season as an assistant coach of the Penguins. In his current role, Tocchet works closely with the team’s speedy and dynamic forward group, which had eight players reach double figures in points during the 2016 playoffs, a key reason Pittsburgh was able to win the franchise’s fourth Stanley Cup, the first Cup win of Tocchet’s coaching career. Tocchet was hired as an assistant coach by Tampa Bay in July 2008 and was elevated to interim head coach on Nov. 14 of that year. He was named head coach following the ‘08-09 season, where he remained in that position until 2010. Tocchet began his coaching career as an assistant with the Colorado Avalanche for two years (2002-04) before spending one season (‘05-06) with the Phoenix Coyotes. A veteran of 18 NHL seasons, including parts of three seasons with the Penguins from 1992-94, Tocchet won a Stanley Cup championship with Pittsburgh in 1992. The four-time NHL All-Star (1989, ‘90, ‘91, ‘93) played 1,144 career NHL games and totaled 440 goals, 952 points and 2,972 penalty minutes in his NHL career. Tocchet was originally drafted by Philadelphia in the sixth round (125th overall) of the 1983 NHL Draft.

JACQUES MARTIN Assistant Coach

Jacques Martin stepped back behind the Penguins’ bench for a second tour of duty as an assistant coach in December 2015, playing a crucial role in the team’s Stanley Cup win, the first championship of Martin’s lengthy NHL career. Martin, who enters his fourth season in the Pittsburgh organization, presides over the Penguins’ defensemen and penalty killing unit in his current role. He was instrumental in Kris Letang hitting career highs in all offensive categories in 2015-16. Martin’s PK unit finished with the fifth-best success rate in the NHL. Martin has over 25 years of NHL experience as a general manager, head coach and assistant coach with Pittsburgh, Montreal, Florida, Ottawa, Colorado/Quebec, Chicago and St. Louis. He won 613 games and made 12 playoff appearances in 17 seasons as an NHL head coach. He won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s ‘most outstanding coach’ with Ottawa in 1999 and was a finalist for the award on three other occasions. Martin won gold medals as an assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2002 Olympics and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. He was also an assistant coach on the 2006 Canadian Olympic Team.

MIKE BALES Goaltending Coach Mike Bales has established himself as one of the NHL’s top goaltending coaches during his first three seasons with the team. During the Penguins’ 2016 Stanley Cup championship drive, Pittsburgh used three goaltenders who thrived under his tutelage, including rookie Matt Murray, whose 15 playoff wins equaled the NHL rookie record. Under Bales’ guidance, Marc-Andre Fleury has compiled two of the finest seasons of his career. During the 2014-15 campaign, Fleury established a franchise record with 10 shutouts, a figure that led the entire NHL. Bales began his Penguins’ career as the team’s goaltending development coach from 2011-13. Bales, a native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, spent 18 seasons playing professionally from 1992-2010, including stints in the NHL with Boston and Ottawa. Bales also saw action with teams in the AHL, IHL, Germany, Sweden and Northern Ireland. He was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the fifth round (105th overall) of the 1990 NHL Draft. Before turning pro, Bales played three collegiate seasons with Ohio State University of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) from 1989-92. TRAVIS WILLIAMS Chief Operating Officer Travis Williams is in his ninth season as a senior executive with the Penguins, currently serving as Chief Operating Officer and overseeing finance, legal affairs, technology, business development and arena operations. He also assists CEO David Morehouse in the day-to-day management of the business. In addition, Williams serves as the Penguins’ point man on the development of the former Civic Arena site and oversaw the construction of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry. Williams joined the Penguins in 2008 as Senior Vice President of Business Affairs/ General Counsel. One of his first responsibilities was to guide the construction and development of the new arena — bringing the project to completion on time and under budget. He now serves as the team’s liaison with building manager AEG Facilities, working closely with AEG on all arena-related events, including major concerts and national-level sporting events. Previously, Williams had been a partner at Reed Smith LLP, where he specialized in mergers and acquisitions, investment management, commercial lending and general corporate matters. Terry Kalna is in his second season as senior vice president of sales and broadcasting following an 18-year career in motorsports management. Kalna, a native of Greensburg, oversees corporate sales, partnership activation, ticket sales and premium sales in addition to the Penguins Radio Network. Chartiers Valley Middle School

Chartiers Valley Middle School’s STEAM classroom kicked off the school year with the Penguin’s Future Goals — Hockey Scholar program for a unit on how math intersects with the real world. Students greatly enjoyed the interactive simulations and game-like environment in which these lessons are taught. One student said, “I enjoy math. I enjoy hockey. It’s nice to see them used together in real life!” Many of the students are avid Penguins fans and this program has built off of that passion to make learning fun. Teachers enjoy the fact that lessons can be self-paced, allowing students who are advanced to go at a faster pace and students who need more time to move without being rushed. The review exams at the end of each section also give students immediate feedback on their learning progress. “I love how Future Goals makes real life connections to show us how math is used in real life settings all over the world,” said another STEAM class student. The Pittsburgh Penguins and the PIHL (Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League) are proud to announce the four high school players who have received Player of the Month honors for the month of December. Each player starred for their respective clubs, and they collectively combined for 46 points (27G6+19A) in 15 total games. Their teams combined for an overall 12-2-1 record over the 15 game span and outscored opponents 95-37. Chris Conway, a senior defenseman from the Bethel Park Black Hawks, led his team in goals (five), assists (seven), and points (12) in December. In a total of four December games, Conway helped Bethel Park achieve a 3-1 record and contributed four power-play goals (PPG) and a game-winning goal (GWG) to the cause. Conway and the Black Hawks team currently sit in a position to make a run in the playoffs. Jared Gerger, a sophomore forward of the Hempfield Spartans, helped his team climb up the standings while posting 11 goals, five assists, and 16 points in five games in December. Gerger finished the month with a five-game goal scoring streak and four-multigoal performances. The Spartans finished December going 4-1 and currently sit two points back from second place. Paul Knerr led the way for Baldwin helping his team secure five of a possible six points in the month of December by going 2-0-1. The senior forward from the Fighting Highlanders posted six points (3G+3A) in three games including a four point performance (2G+2A). Knerr and the Highlanders are poised to make a long playoff run. Nicholas Frantz, a sophomore forward for the Meadville Bulldogs, put up an impressive stat line in the month of December. Frantz tallied 12 points (8G+4A) in three games, including three special teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s goals (two PPG and one shootout goal (SOG)). The Meadville skater picked up two hat tricks and had a whopping seven-point performance helping the Bulldogs go 3-0 in December. The Bulldogs sit at a perfect 15-0-0 record and are top contenders to win the championship. 70

Skating on a line with Sidney Crosby can be difficult. Your concentration level has to be non-stop. You must be constantly ready to receive the puck. But, when the puck gets there, the situation can definitely get easier. Witness Conor Sheary’s second goal in the Penguins’ 7-1 win at Carolina on Jan. 20. Bryan Rust passed Crosby the puck in the slot. Crosby moved it to Sheary at the right post with an exquisite spinning backhand feed and Sheary hit the empty net, going down to one knee as he shot in unwitting tribute to Crosby. “Sid threw me a behind-the-back no-looker, and I had the whole net to shoot at,” Sheary said. “It was a pretty great pass.” Sheary gets his share of those from Crosby, and does well with them. The 24-year-old Massachusetts native had 15 goals and 16 assists in his first 38 games this season, posting a plus-14 mark in the process. Sheary had four goals and two assists in three games as the Penguins posted three consecutive victories from Jan. 16-20. His biggest goal was the overtime winner in a wild 8-7 home triumph over Washington on Jan. 16. Sheary, 24, is generously listed at 5-foot-8, 175 pounds. But the Massachusetts native plays well in traffic, using his slight frame to invent an edge. “With my size, I can get lower to the ice,” Sheary said. “I try to use my quickness and speed to get around defenders, and when pucks are lower to the ice, I can find them a little quicker than the bigger guys. I try to use that to my advantage.” Sheary’s grit despite lacking size has earned the respect of his teammates. “He’s not a big guy, but he goes to the tough areas in the corners and goes to the net hard,” said Crosby. But Sheary’s main asset, the captain added: “He’s got a lot of speed, and he uses his speed really well.” Said Carl Hagelin, “Sheary is so shifty, and a great skater. You can see how his speed is good with Sid.” Sheary was happy to be scoring, but happier that the Penguins were winning. The three wins Jan. 16-20 came on the heels of a three-game losing streak. Sheary particularly appreciated the road victories Jan. 18 at Montreal (a 4-1 margin) and Jan. 20 at Carolina. continued on page 79

“It’s good to be scoring, especially when you’re winning,” Sheary said after vanquishing the Hurricanes. “These are the two most complete games we’ve played on the road all year, probably. “I think that’s important for our confidence on the road and personally, it’s good that I can score.” The Penguins’ 8-7 win over Washington was crazy. The Penguins trailed 3-0, and then led 5-3 and 7-5 before Sheary finally settled the matter by netting from a goalmouth scramble 34 seconds into extra time. The game-deciding play started with Crosby and Sheary two-on-one. Then, Sheary said, “I was just trying to get it on net and create havoc. It was sitting there in the crease, and Sid and I just whacked at it, and eventually it went in the net. I’m not sure how.” An 8-7 game is rare, as Sheary noted: “It’s been a while, probably since high school, since I’ve seen that many goals scored in a game. I’m sure it was fun for the fans to see, and it was fun for us to play in. Those are exciting games. But we’re glad to get the win in overtime.” Sheary is in his third full season of pro hockey, having joined the Penguins’ farm team at Wilkes-Barre Scranton late in the 2013-14 campaign after concluding his collegiate career at UMass-Amherst. Sheary had seven goals and three assists in 44 NHL games last season, then four goals in six assists in 23 playoff games as the Penguins won the Stanley Cup.
