Season Ticket Holder
SPOTLIGHT
With whom do you attend Penguins home games? Family and friends. I take my younger son to the home opener and my older son to Shirts Off Our Backs. My fiancée gets to go to the second game and the next to last game, plus others. What is your earliest memory of Penguins hockey? The Toronto Maple Leafs in the Penguins’ first season. My dad got tickets and took me and my brothers to the game. I remember being in the Civic Arena for the first time, watching the scoreboard, and Toronto tying us 4-4 with 25 seconds left in the game. I took a big maple leaf from home to crumble during the game. What motivated you to become a season ticket holder? I have always loved the game. I play, ref and used to coach. When I got out of school and could afford the tickets, I started going to games every year. Then in 1982, I decided to take the plunge and get season tickets. The rest, as they say, is history, including four Stanley Cups!

34 YEAR Penguins Season Ticket Holder
Jeff and his fiancée Linda with the Stanley Cup.
Aside from on-ice action, what do you enjoy most about attending Penguins games? The game is my passion of course. I love it. The atmosphere of being in the building with the fans and experiencing the highs and lows together, and the beer and nachos don’t hurt either. continued on page 15

What lesser known Penguins player (past or present) has left a lasting impression on you? What did he do to make that impression? Mike Bullard. Unfortunately, his time with the Penguins didn’t end very well. My seats were against the glass at the time, and the glass was still low. Even when fans were booing Bullard, I was cheering for him over the glass. When the game ended, he grabbed the puck, skated over and tossed it to me. It was a unique opportunity for a player and a fan to connect. What is the most unique keepsake in your personal collection of Penguins memorabilia? Back in the early/mid 80’s there was a guy that hung over the boards with a rubber chicken and taunted the opposing team. That was me. I kept that chicken till the neck was dry rotted and fell apart. My brother felt so bad the chicken died, he bought me a small replacement. I smile every time I look at it. What is your favorite memory from the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoff run? How exhausted and drained, including a major headache, I was after Game Six against the Capitals. The third period was so emotional. I can only imagine how I would have felt if we would have lost, and of course, watching Sidney Crosby and the team skate with the Cup around the ice. I was up till 2:00AM watching the post-game coverage and was up for work and off to Harrisburg at 6:00AM. In your eyes, what makes the Pittsburgh Penguins, or hockey in general, great? There is no other game like it. As much respect as I have for the other sports, and as great as those athletes are, hockey players do it from a 1/8 steel blade. Nothing like it! 15

The unofficial first half of the 2016-17 season was characterized by competitive balance. At the All-Star break, 24 of the league’s 30 teams were within six points of a playoff spot, and the top 10 teams in the overall standings were separated by a mere nine points. All four divisions were likewise tight. The top four teams in the Metropolitan Division were separated by nine points. The second-through-sixth teams in the Atlantic Division were separated by eight points. The third-through-sixth teams in the Central Division were separated by six points. And the top three teams in the Pacific Division were separated by one point.

It’s the first time that’s happened in Toronto since 1952-53, when Gord Hannigan (17), George Armstrong (14), Ron Stewart (13) and Eric Nesterenko (10) became the first four rookies in franchise history to all score at least 10 goals in a season.

MARIO LEMIEUX Co-Owner/Chairman
Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in the National Hockey League, added a new line to his Hall of Fame career last season: Two-time champion owner. The Penguins claimed the Cup for the second time since Lemieux and partner Ron Burkle bought the team out of bankruptcy in 1999. It gave him four Stanley Cups overall, including two as a player in 1991 and 1992. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice – including 10 straight playoff appearances and four conference final appearances in the past nine seasons, in addition to the two Cups. The Penguins entered the 2016-17 season having sold out every game for nineplus seasons while setting new standards for television ratings, corporate sales and social media. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open the arena in August, 2010. The facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. The Penguins ownership group, local labor organizations and members of the Pittsburgh business community honored Lemieux in 2012 with a statue to commemorate his career and contributions to the city and the region. Appropriately named “Le Magnifique,” the statue, by nationally-acclaimed sculptor Bruce Wolfe, can be seen outside of PPG Paints Arena. For full bio, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

PPG
RON BURKLE Co-Owner
Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing, technology and distribution industries, is in his 18th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports, leading the team to Stanley Cup championships in 2009 and 2016. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. PPG Paints Arena is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh, including NCAA basketball and hockey. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for nine-plus seasons and consistently ranked among the most fan-friendly and community-minded teams in the NHL and all of pro sports. The Penguins have earned 10 straight playoff berths and reached the conference finals four times in the past nine years, in addition to the two Stanley Cups. The team’s solid foundation of ownership has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign many of the team’s core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award. DAVID MOREHOUSE Chief Executive Officer & President
David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Stanley Cupchampion Penguins, overseeing all aspects of the team’s operation. The Penguins have become one of the NHL’s strongest business entities during his tenure — selling out every game for nine-plus seasons, setting new standards for television ratings and corporate sales and increasing their focus on innovative youth marketing. Morehouse joined the team as consultant on the new arena project in 2004 and was named team president in April 2007. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer just as the new arena was opening in August 2010. Under his leadership, the Penguins have reshaped their strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, community interaction, corporate outreach and cutting-edge technology, while maintaining a high level of performance on the ice. A strong commitment to fan outreach includes an annual event where players personally deliver season tickets to fans’ homes and a special preseason game were all 18,000 tickets are distributed free to local youth. Morehouse also was a driving force behind the new UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, which opened in August 2015. It is the first facility to combine hockey with a world-class medical center and sports performance complex. Morehouse joined the Penguins following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill — as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He is a native of the Pittsburgh neighborhood of Beechview.

JIM RUTHERFORD Executive Vice President & General Manager
Jim Rutherford enters his third year as Penguins executive vice president and general manager fresh off the greatest season of his managerial career. During the course of the 2015-16 campaign, Rutherford transformed the Penguins into Stanley Cup champions, thanks in large part to his acquisitions of Phil Kessel, Nick Bonino, Trevor Daley and Carl Hagelin, plus the promotion of Mike Sullivan to head coach in December of 2015. When the Penguins defeated the San Jose Sharks to win the franchise’s fourth Stanley Cup on June 12, 2016, Rutherford became the first GM in the post-1967 Expansion Era to manage multiple teams to Cup victories, having also done so with Carolina in 2006. As a reward for quick, on-the-fly re-shaping of the Penguins’ roster, Rutherford won the NHL General Manager of the Year Award for his work in ’15-16. Rutherford spent the previous 20 years as GM of the Carolina Hurricanes/ Hartford Whalers franchise from 1994-2014, where he was a key architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team. In addition to his general manager duties, he also served 20 years as president of Carolina/Hartford, taking the post in 1994. In his role as president/GM, Rutherford oversaw operations on both the hockey and business sides of the organization. Over the course of his executive career, Rutherford has won multiple awards, including The Hockey News‘ Executive of the Year in 2002 and ’06. Additionally, he was voted by his NHL general management peers as Sporting News ‘Executive of the Year’ in 2006. Before his 22 years in the NHL, Rutherford was recognized as the 1987 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Executive of the Year, and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Executive of the Year in back-to-back years with the Windsor Spitfires in 1987 and ’88. He oversaw a Spitfires team that won the OHL championship in 1988 and earned a berth in the Memorial Cup. Rutherford played 13 years as a goaltender in the NHL, appearing in 457 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit. He was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round (10th overall) of the 1969 NHL Draft. For full bio, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

JASON BOTTERILL Associate General Manager
Jason Botterill enters this third season as associate general manager having assisted GM Jim Rutherford in making numerous personnel moves over the last year that resulted in the Penguins winning the Stanley Cup in 2016, the second championship Botterill has helped build during his tenure in Pittsburgh. As associate GM, Botterill advises Rutherford on all hockey-related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. During the summer of 2015, Botterill played a leading role in hiring Mike Sullivan as head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League. Following a hot start to the season with WB/S, Sullivan was eventually promoted to Pittsburgh and helped guide the Penguins to the Stanley Cup victory. In addition to his duties in Pittsburgh, Botterill serves as the GM of WB/S, which has made the playoffs all seven years he has overseen the team, including back-to-back berths in the Eastern Conference Final in 2013 and ‘14. Prior to his promotion, Botterill spent the previous five years as the Penguins assistant GM from 2009-14, and the two years prior to that as the team’s director of hockey administration beginning in 2007-08 where he was a key architect of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team. Botterill was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the first round (20th overall) in 1994 NHL Draft and played in 88 NHL games for Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo before his career was cut short due to injury. He also suited up for 393 career minor-league games in the American and International Hockey Leagues, tallying 257 career points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four years of college hockey at the University of Michigan and helped lead the Wolverines to an NCAA title in 1996. Botterill represented Canada in three straight World Junior Championships from 1994-96, winning gold medals all three years. Following his playing career, he received his MBA from his alma mater, the University of Michigan.

Guerin was Pittsburgh’s player development coach from 2011-14, where he was instrumental in helping develop the Penguins’ minor league, junior and college prospects, including Tom Kuhnhackl, Bryan Rust and Conor Sheary, who all played huge roles in the 2016 championship run. Originally drafted by New Jersey in the first round (5th overall) of the 1989 NHL Draft, Guerin won two Stanley Cups (Pittsburgh, 2009; New Jersey, 1995) and spent 18 seasons in the NHL — including his final two with the Penguins. MIKE SULLIVAN Head Coach
Mike Sullivan led the Penguins to one of the greatest in-season turnarounds in franchise history during his first year as head coach in 2015-16, a journey that resulted in a Stanley Cup victory against the San Jose Sharks on June 12, 2016. Adhering to Sullivan’s advice to ‘Just Play’, the Penguins ended the regular season with the secondbest record in the Eastern Conference and fourth-best mark in the league, in large part because of a 14-2 run to conclude the regular season. By leading the Penguins to the franchise’s fourth Cup, Sullivan became just the sixth American-born head coach to win the Stanley Cup. Prior to being promoted to Pittsburgh, Sullivan spent the first two-plus months of the 2015-16 season as the head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins. During his 23-game tenure in WB/S, his club went 18-5, which was good enough for first place in the Atlantic Division. Sullivan’s club also had a franchise-best 11-game winning streak. A native of Marshfield, Massachusetts, Sullivan began his coaching career in 2002-03, starting the season as head coach of the AHL’s Providence Bruins before joining the NHL’s Bruins as an assistant coach late in the year. He was promoted to head coach of the NHL Bruins at age 35 in 2003-04, winning a Northeast Division crown in the first of his two years at the helm. Sullivan served as an NHL assistant coach for seven-consecutive years from 2007-14 with Tampa Bay, the NY Rangers and Vancouver. In addition to his professional coaching experience, Sullivan has coached the United States three times internationally, including the 2016 World Cup of Hockey when he was an assistant coach. He was the head coach at the 2007 World Championship and an assistant coach at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turino, Italy. During the 2014-15 season, Sullivan was a member of the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks player development staff. Sullivan’s 11-year NHL career began with the expansion San Jose Sharks in 1991-92 and included stops in Calgary, Boston and Arizona. Sullivan played four years of collegiate hockey at Boston University from 1986-90, serving as the Terriers captain as a senior. Sullivan represented the U.S. as a player at the 1988 World Junior Championship. For full bio, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

RICK TOCCHET Assistant Coach
Rick Tocchet is in his third season as an assistant coach of the Penguins. In his current role, Tocchet works closely with the team’s speedy and dynamic forward group, which had eight players reach double figures in points during the 2016 playoffs, a key reason Pittsburgh was able to win the franchise’s fourth Stanley Cup, the first Cup win of Tocchet’s coaching career. Tocchet was hired as an assistant coach by Tampa Bay in July 2008 and was elevated to interim head coach on Nov. 14 of that year. He was named head coach following the ‘08-09 season, where he remained in that position until 2010. Tocchet began his coaching career as an assistant with the Colorado Avalanche for two years (2002-04) before spending one season (‘05-06) with the Phoenix Coyotes. A veteran of 18 NHL seasons, including parts of three seasons with the Penguins from 1992-94, Tocchet won a Stanley Cup championship with Pittsburgh in 1992. The four-time NHL All-Star (1989, ‘90, ‘91, ‘93) played 1,144 career NHL games and totaled 440 goals, 952 points and 2,972 penalty minutes in his NHL career. Tocchet was originally drafted by Philadelphia in the sixth round (125th overall) of the 1983 NHL Draft.
JACQUES MARTIN Assistant Coach
Jacques Martin stepped back behind the Penguins’ bench for a second tour of duty as an assistant coach in December 2015, playing a crucial role in the team’s Stanley Cup win, the first championship of Martin’s lengthy NHL career. Martin, who enters his fourth season in the Pittsburgh organization, presides over the Penguins’ defensemen and penalty killing unit in his current role. He was instrumental in Kris Letang hitting career highs in all offensive categories in 2015-16. Martin’s PK unit finished with the fifth-best success rate in the NHL. Martin has over 25 years of NHL experience as a general manager, head coach and assistant coach with Pittsburgh, Montreal, Florida, Ottawa, Colorado/Quebec, Chicago and St. Louis. He won 613 games and made 12 playoff appearances in 17 seasons as an NHL head coach. He won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s ‘most outstanding coach’ with Ottawa in 1999 and was a finalist for the award on three other occasions. Martin won gold medals as an assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2002 Olympics and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. He was also an assistant coach on the 2006 Canadian Olympic Team.

Under Bales’ guidance, Marc-Andre Fleury has compiled two of the finest seasons of his career. During the 2014-15 campaign, Fleury established a franchise record with 10 shutouts, a figure that led the entire NHL. Bales began his Penguins’ career as the team’s goaltending development coach from 2011-13. Bales, a native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, spent 18 seasons playing professionally from 1992-2010, including stints in the NHL with Boston and Ottawa. PENGUINS IN THE CLASSROOM …
TEACHING STEAM!
Chartiers Valley Middle School
Chartiers Valley Middle School’s STEAM classroom kicked off the school year with the Penguin’s Future Goals — Hockey Scholar program for a unit on how math intersects with the real world. Students greatly enjoyed the interactive simulations and game-like environment in which these lessons are taught. One student said, “I enjoy math. I enjoy hockey. It’s nice to see them used together in real life!” Many of the students are avid Penguins fans and this program has built off of that passion to make learning fun. Teachers enjoy the fact that lessons can be self-paced, allowing students who are advanced to go at a faster pace and students who need more time to move without being rushed. The review exams at the end of each section also give students immediate feedback on their learning progress. “I love how Future Goals makes real life connections to show us how math is used in real life settings all over the world,” said another STEAM class student. Hockey Scholar is a digital resource that provides students an opportunity to experience different aspects of hockey while immersing themselves in problem solving situations involving engineering, math and science. If you’re a 5th-8th grade teacher, learn how to bring Future Goals to your classroom by visiting futuregoals.nhl.com/penguins!

WOMEN’S HOCKEY TAKES CENTER STAGE The National Women’s Hockey League (NWHL) is coming to Pittsburgh! The second Annual NWHL All-Star Weekend will be held at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex on Feb. 11 – 12 and will consist of two teams, which will be captained by Amanda Kessel of the New York Riveters and Kelley Steadman of the Buffalo Beauts. Both teams will don jerseys in traditional Pittsburgh colors as a representation of the City of Champions and will be branded with the NWHL’s trademark placement of the jersey nameplates on the bottom of the uniform. Kelley Team Kessel will sport Pittsburgh STEADMAN gold jerseys with two-tone black and white sleeves with black stars. Team Steadman’s jerseys will foil Team Kessel’s and will feature a more traditional black jersey with gold accents. Both jerseys will have the 2017 All-Star crest adorning the front. All jerseys will be auctioned off by the MeiGray Group after the All-Star Weekend. The two day event starts on Saturday, Feb. 11 and will feature the two teams competing in the NWHL Skills Showdown. Players will participate in challenges such as shooting accuracy, fastest skater, trick shot, and agility races. The AllStar Game will take place the following day and will showcase a 4-on-4 battle between the top players in the NWHL. Teams will consist of numerous players, of all pedigrees, from former Olympic Champions to recent college standouts. The weekend is an opportunity to showcase the event, the league, and the rapid growth of women’s hockey in the United States. Tickets for the event are on sale now and can either be purchased online at the NWHL website or at www.nwhl.zone/tickets. Tickets are available as a single event ticket or an All-Star Weekend Pass. Penguins Profile:
MATT MURRAY
Mark Madden
Goaltender Matt Murray has supreme confidence in his teammates. “I feel like we always have it under control,” Murray said after making 44 saves to beat visiting Boston, 5-1, on Jan. 22. “No matter what the scenario is, no matter what the score is, I feel like we have a group here that can find a way to win.” Coach Mike Sullivan has the same sort of belief in Murray: “When you get goaltending like that, it helps you win.” Sullivan’s faith has been reflected by Murray’s workload: Murray got a run of six straight starts heading into the NHL All-Star break. Murray had an insanely rocky night Jan. 16, going the distance as the Penguins beat Washington, 8-7, at PPG Paints Arena. But he bounced back to stop 90 of 93 shots over the next three games, all Penguins victories. “I’m a little bit happier these last couple games,” Murray said after defeating Boston. “But you’re never really where you want to be. You’re always looking to improve, to move forward and get better. “Obviously, I wasn’t as good as I wanted to be for a couple of games. But the last three games, I’ve been a little happier with, and the team has done quite the job of making my job fairly easy.” Except for the aforementioned 44 saves against the Bruins, that is. Not so easy. But that’s what good goalies do, and what good teammates say. Murray stopped just 21 of 28 shots in the debacle against Washington. But he turned aside 19 of 20 shots in a 4-1 victory at Montreal on Jan. 18, 27 of 28 in a 7-1 rout at Carolina on Dec. 20, and then came the 44 stops against the Bruins. Goaltending isn’t just about the number of saves. It’s about the timely nature thereof, and that was evident vs. Boston. The Penguins’ final margin was comfortable. But the Penguins led by just 2-1 when Boston’s David Backes finagled a breakaway just after the 15-minute mark of the second period. Murray denied Backes, and the Penguins netted thrice in the third period. “It was a weird play, a bouncing puck at the blue line,” Murray said. “[Backes] put a pretty good move on. I wasn’t expecting that from him. He went backhand pretty early, and I just barely got a piece of it with the top of my blocker, and it went out of play. So I got a little bit lucky on that one.”

Murray’s brief NHL tenure has certainly been lively. Since debuting Dec. 19, 2015 in a 2-1 home loss to Carolina, Murray has won a Stanley Cup and more than established himself as a top-flight big-league goaltender. Murray has a championship ring, but is still eligible to win the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie. His stats after 26 games give him a chance: 17-6-1 record, 2.42 goals-against average, .921 save percentage. Murray, 22, is a native of Thunder Bay, Ontario. He played just 13 regularseason games last season, going 9-2-1 with a 2.00 goals-against and save percentage of .930. Injury to Marc-Andre Fleury afforded Murray opportunity in the Stanley Cup playoffs and Murray made the most of it, going 15-6 with a 2.08 goals-against and .923 save percentage as the Penguins won the franchise’s fourth Cup. Murray would love to travel that path again, and certainly has the corresponding faith in his teammates. “We’ve won coming from behind. We’ve won [holding] leads. That’s what good teams do,” Murray said. “They keep their confidence no matter what.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

Loney broke into the NHL with the Penguins and quickly became a fan favorite with his ability to hustle and work hard on the ice. The big forward was a key component of Pittsburgh’s two Stanley Cup championship squads in 1991 and 1992. The Alberta native appeared in 532 regularseason games with the Penguins and recorded 196 points and 982 penalty minutes. After playing for the Rangers and Islanders, Loney moved back to the Pittsburgh area. His son Ty, who played high school hockey at Pine-Richland, spent the 2015-16 season in the Penguins organization — splitting the year between Wheeling and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Troy and his wife Aafke are currently the co-owners of the Youngstown Phantoms of the United States Hockey League. 93

Heads UP Pittsburgh is a first of its kind program that has served as a blueprint for other NHL and professional organizations since its creation in 2010. In partnership with UPMC Sports Medicine and funded by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, the program has helped reduce the amount of concussions in youth sports by providing free baseline concussion testing to young athletes.
Since 2011, the Heads UP Pittsburgh has had great results in the youth sports community. n Over 125,000 individual players, coaches, and parents have been impacted by the free baseline testing and educational programs n Athletes in 30+ sports have been tested through funding from the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation n Over 12,000 conditioning aids, including flexibility kits, neck strengthening kits, and core strength balance discs have been distributed n New pediatric version of the baseline test targeted for athletes ages seven to nine is now available

In 2015, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and the Allegheny Intermediate Unit introduced the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation (PFF) STEAM Lending Library to schools districts in Allegheny County. This oneof-a-kind, first in the nation, program has given students the opportunity to explore technology that they may have never had access to otherwise. Stressing the importance of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math) learning in the region, the Library gives teachers the opportunity to borrow technology to use in their classrooms. The PPF STEAM Lending Library contains nearly 1,000 items, and to date, has impacted educators from 40 schools districts in Allegheny County.
Entering its third year, Tablets in Education has provided elementary students in 11 counties the opportunity to enhance their education through technology. Since its inception in 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation has donated over 3,900 Kindle Fire tablets to over 200 school districts and special needs programs in the region; impacting over 100,000 students. Along with the support from the Allegheny Intermediate Unit, Tablets in Education continues to change the way students in our region learn. MIKE LANGE Penguins Radio Network Play-by-Play Announcer
One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 42nd season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.
PHIL BOURQUE Penguins Radio Network Color Analyst
Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 14th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey. 111
JOSH GETZOFF Radio Broadcast Host and PensTV Host
Josh Getzoff is in his second season as a radio broadcast host and PensTV host with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He joins the Penguins after spending the previous two years as the sports director for FOX Champaign in Champaign, Illinois. While in Champaign, Getzoff covered the University of Illinois and Big Ten athletics, local high school athletics, and various professional teams in the region. In June of 2015, he was named the Television Sportscaster of the Year by the Illinois Broadcasters Association. In addition to his time in Illinois, Getzoff has also worked as a sports anchor/reporter at WENY-TV and radio update anchor at 1410 WELM ESPN Radio in Elmira, New York, and served as a member of the on-site production team during NBC’s coverage of Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia. HOCKEY ETIQUETTE 101 Our goal? To create an awesome game experience for all fans! Help make that happen by remembering the following: 1.
DO NOT ENTER OR EXIT THE SEATING AREA DURING PLAY! Hockey is fast — and goals can be missed in an instant. Fans moving through rows and up aisles can block the view of an entire seating area. Wait until the whistle blows to make your move. HINT #1: The red light above the penalty boxes is lit for TV timeouts. TV timeouts occur at the first whistle stops inside the 14:00, 10:00, and 6:00 minute mark of each period, EXCEPT following an icing call or goal. When the light comes on, this is your chance to make a dash to the restroom or your seats! HINT #2: The concourse TVs feature a countdown clock during the intermissions. Smart, huh? Thank the season ticket holders for recommending this awesome idea!
118
2.
NO LEANING! We know you are into the game, but leaning creates a ripple effect, affecting the view of the fans in the rows behind you. Sit back so all can enjoy the game!
3.
Keep your eyes on the puck! Pucks can hurt when they enter the seating area!
4.
PPG Paints Arena is a non-smoking facility; smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, is prohibited.
5.
It’s hard to like fans of the opposing team, we get it. However, we think it is pretty cool that they chose to come to our building. Be aware of children sitting around you and let the guys on the ice do the talking!
6.
Cheer, clap and let the players know you are here! Hockey is the best sport to watch live — have fun!

Since 2012, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered to build a total of 12 dek hockey rinks for local communities through their unique Project Power Play program. Project Power Play is a $2.3 million initiative that was designed to build one dozen dek rinks in Pittsburgh and the surrounding communities over a four-year period. To support the program, Highmark provided $1.5 million in funding. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation also provided funding for the project. The City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and surrounding communities provided the land as well as maintenance services, lighting and additional support. The rinks are multi-purpose courts and are suitable for hockey and other sports; including, soccer and lacrosse. All rink sites were chosen based on a community’s need for this type of facility and a local commitment to develop youth programming. Citiparks and local athletic associations continue to program the rinks, with the assistance from the Penguins organization.

Mike Prisuta Sidney Crosby had a blast in Los Angeles, but he never lost sight of the NHL’s second half. “This is when you gotta raise your game,” Crosby said in the immediate aftermath of the Metropolitan Division’s victory in the 3-on-3 All-Star Tournament. “This is when teams kind of take their game to the next level and games become more important. You really want to be playing the right way going into the playoffs, and everybody’s fighting to get in there. “I think you have to understand that it’s really a sprint now to the finish.” The Penguins’ 34-game sprint to the NHL’s postseason began on Jan. 31 against Nashville. They took the ice against the Predators with a record of 30-13-5 through their first 48 games. And their 65 points trailed only Washington (72), Minnesota (69) and Columbus (68) in the NHL’s overall standings. So clearly they’d been doing something right. “We’ve done some good things,” Crosby assessed prior to heading to LA for the NHL’s three-day All-Star celebration. “Everyone knows that the biggest part 164
is the second half and making sure you’re getting better, but I think the last month-and-ahalf, two months we’ve been pretty good. Consistency is always a tough thing to find. I think we’ve done a pretty good job of that, especially given some of the injuries. “We’ve had some guys out, some guys on the blueline. A good chunk of those guys have been out for periods of time and guys have come in and done a really good job. “It’s a good first half, I think.” Kris Letang was at the head of the injured-defensemen list Crosby referenced. Letang missed the final six games before the break, 13 of the last 18 and 18 overall through the Penguins’ first 48. But Letang wasn’t alone. Trevor Daley endured a five-game absence from Dec. 17 through Dec. 27. Brian Dumoulin was out from Dec. 28 through Jan. 22, a 10-game stretch. Olli Maatta was sidelined twice due to injury (Dec. 27-28). And Derrick Pouliot missed the next 21 games after making his 2016-17 debut on Oct. 20. continued on page 167

We’re make it through the first 48 looking forward r games without missing any time and trying to gea due to injury among the forwards. up for the home The Penguins have been able stretch.” to overcome such absences, as has been their habit, as ~ Matt Murray evidenced by the 12-4-2 record they managed without Letang prior to the All-Star break. That wasn’t an insignificant development in terms of assessing all that transpired throughout the regular season’s unofficial first half. “I think overall it’s been a group effort,” head coach Mike Sullivan said. “I think it’s been a team effort. I wouldn’t just single out the six defensemen that are playing, I think they’ve done a nice job for us. But I think our forwards have done a pretty good job, as well, with their pursuit up the ice and hanging onto pucks in the offensive zone, and I think that’s helped take some pressure off of our blueline. “That’s the type of game, when we’re at our best, that’s how we play. And that’s the case whether the Penguins are deploying their Top-6 defensemen or they’re relying on the likes of Chad Ruhwedel (11 games played through the first 48), Steve Oleksy (nine appearances), David Warsofsky (six games) or Cameron Gaunce (three games) to help fill voids on the back end. Their contributions, and those of the group, conspired to leave the Penguins with an NHL-leading 170 goals entering the All-Star break, and with a top-10 power play (fifth at 22.8 percent). “We’ve had our times when we’ve been really good and we’ve had our times where we think we can be better,” goaltender Matt Murray observed. “Obviously, there are always ways you can improve. “All together, I think we’re pretty happy with where we’re at. We’re looking forward and trying to gear up for the home stretch.” 167

LEMIEUX, CROSBY HELP THE
PENGUINS SHINE
AT NHL ALL-STAR WEEKEND Jason Seidling NHL All-Star Weekend could not have gone any better for the Pittsburgh Penguins (actually it could, but we’ll touch on that later). Beginning with Friday night’s unveiling of the ‘100 Greatest NHL Players’, and concluding with Sidney Crosby teaming with rival Alex Ovechkin to deliver an All-Star Game win for the Metropolitan Division on Sunday, the Penguins shined throughout the three-day extravaganza. Without question, the signature event at the 62nd All-Star Game came on Friday, when the final 67 members of the ‘100 Greatest NHL Players’ were released. The Penguins had seven of the team’s all-time greats added to the list, with franchise icon Mario Lemieux joined by Crosby, Jaromir Jagr, Ron Francis and Bryan Trottier — all of whom won a pair of Stanley Cups with Pittsburgh. Paul Coffey, the Penguins’ highest-scoring blueliner in team history, also made the team, along with another Hall of Famer who enjoyed a cup

of coffee (no pun intended) here, Luc Robitaille. Those seven joined Andy Bathgate and Tim Horton (yes, the donut guy), who were among the first 33 players announced. Lemieux, with the help of Tom McMillan, the Penguins’ vice president of communications, made sure all seven players named to the list on Friday night gathered together for a picture. How important was the picture to the group? Trottier served as a de facto PR person for Crosby, shutting down the Penguins’ captain’s media availability early so he could join the shot. “We were trying to get all the Pittsburgh guys together,” Lemieux told reporters just moments after the photo was finally completed. “I’m glad we got it done.” As great as the photo was, there was something missing: Evgeni Malkin. Despite two Stanley Cups and a trophy case of awards that includes both a regular-season and playoff MVP, Malkin was left off the list, to the chagrin of many in the hockey community. “Very surprised,” Lemieux said of Malkin’s omission. “There are a lot of great players that didn’t make it. He has won two Stanley Cups, a Conn Smythe, an Art Ross. It’s tough.” As a result of injuries, lockouts and Olympics, Crosby participated in just his second All-Star Game, and his first since 2007. continued on page 182

Metro Division head coach Wayne Gretzky paired Crosby with Washington’s Alex Ovechkin on Sunday. They each set the other up with goals, paving the way to a 10-6 defeat of the Atlantic Division, followed by a 4-3 win against Connor McDavid and the Pacific Division in the championship tilt. “It’s just funny, (Ovechkin’s) into it,” Crosby said. “You don’t have to remind him to be competitive or go out there and try extra hard. He wants to win. I think just seeing that enthusiasm, you see what makes him so good is how bad he wants it but also how much he loves the game.” “It was fun,” Ovechkin added. “We were able to score some goals.” On Saturday night at the Skills Competition, Crosby not only won his matchup against Toronto phenom Auston Matthews in the DraftKings Accuracy Shooting event, but he earned the Metro Division two points by hitting his four targets in just five attempts, doing so in only 10.73 seconds, the quickest time among the eight shooters. Crosby’s group posted the best overall time in the Gatorade Skills Challenge Relay, with the Metro Division captain doing the stickhandling portion of the relay. At the end of the night, Crosby scored a two-point goal in the Discover NHL Shootout.

CROSBY CAPTAINS METRO TO ALL-STAR WIN Michelle Crechiolo Last year, Sidney Crosby captained the Penguins to a Stanley Cup. This year, he captained the Metropolitan Division to a win in the 2017 NHL AllStar Game. After beating the Atlantic 10-6 in the semifinal, the Metro defeated the Pacific 4-3 in the final on Jan. 29 at Staples Center in Los Angeles to earn the victory. As a result of the win, the players will split a $1 million prize. “It was great,” Crosby said afterward. “Our bench was pretty loose. We had a lot of fun there.” Behind that bench was Wayne Gretzky, who stepped in to replace Columbus’ John Tortorella after he was forced to miss the game because of a family emergency. And he made the coaching decision to play Crosby alongside Alex Ovechkin in the 3-on-3 format for a pairing that was exciting for hockey fans. “It was fun,” Ovechkin said afterward. “I think we had some pretty good chances. … We were able to score some goals. We just talked about how we continued on page 188

were going to play out there, if we were losing by one, what we were going to do. Simple things.” When asked if the longtime rivals were buddies now, Ovechkin responded with a grin: “Yes. Best friends.” Those goals came against the Atlantic in the semifinal. Crosby and Ovechkin were held off the scoresheet in the first 10-minute period (each game consisted of two halves), but they each scored in the second. Crosby got on the board first when Ovechkin sent a pass over to Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh, who found Crosby at the front of the net for a quick backhand. Crosby returned the favor later when he sent a perfect cross-ice pass over to Ovechkin at the side of the net, who tapped it in. Crosby said what stood out to him about skating alongside Ovechkin was his competitiveness. “It’s just funny, he’s into it,” Crosby said with a smile. “You don’t have to remind him to be competitive or go out there and try extra hard. He wants to win. I think just seeing that enthusiasm, you see what makes him so good is how bad he wants it but also how much he loves the game. That’s a big part of why he’s able to do what he does year after year.” Once they advanced to the Final, that competitiveness began to spread amongst the group. “You’re there, you might as well try to win,” Crosby said. “You could see the intensity. Guys backchecking and blocking shots. It started to get a little more serious there as it went along. That’s to be expected. All the guys here are competitive.” continued on page 191

Thanks to spectacular goaltending from Washington’s Braden Holtby and Columbus’ Sergei Bobrovsky — along with a coaching challenge from Gretzky on what would have been the tying goal from Edmonton’s Connor McDavid — the Metro was able to come away with the win. “We didn’t make it easy on them,” Crosby smiled of the netminders. “They’re coming in kind of cold there too sometimes. Some of those saves were incredible. That’s not easy getting thrown in there and seeing what they’re seeing. There’s a reason why they’re here. “Who would’ve thought the offside rule would have come into play there,” Crosby continued while laughing. “But you need the bounces if you’re going to win.” It helped they had the motivation of the prize money. “You don’t really think about it and then everyone’s talking about that when you get in the Final,” Crosby said. “I think there’s enough motivation continued on page 192

and incentive to win when you get out there, just the competitive nature of guys. But it’s nice.” Philadelphia’s Wayne Simmonds was named MVP, and when asked if it was possible to be happy for a Flyer, Crosby began laughing. “For a quick moment. A brief moment,” he laughed. “It’s funny, it’s going to a quick turnaround here. We’re going to be playing against him, it’ll be heated and we’ll be in scrums in a few days. But I think we all share the way we love playing the game and we love being a part of this. So it was great to see him do well. Things will go back to normal here, I’m sure, in a few days.” The win capped off a fantastic weekend for Crosby, playing in the All-Star Game for just the second time in his career and the first time in 10 years (he missed the others due to injury and Olympics). “Just an overall great experience for a lot of different reasons,” Crosby said. “Playing with all these guys, getting the opportunity to meet the top 100 and everyone that’s part of that group. They just did an amazing job the way it was organized. We were taken care of really well as players. Hats off to the fans, the organizers, everything that went into this. It was a really enjoyable weekend for everyone and our families.”
