With the 2015-16 season at hand, here’s a quick review of some of last season’s most outstanding achievements:
The LIGHTNING led the NHL with 262 goals and set franchise records for home wins (32) and home points (65) on the way to reaching the Stanley Cup Final for the second time in franchise history.

The RANGERS won their third President’s Trophy and set franchise records for wins (53) and points (113).
The BLACKHAWKS captured their sixth Stanley Cup and third since 2010, becoming the first team to win three Cups in a six-season span since Detroit in 1997, 1998 and 2002.

The CANADIENS’ Carey Price led the NHL in wins (44), goals-against average (1.96) and save percentage (.933) and became the first goalie to lead the league in all three categories since the Blackhawks’ Ed Belfour in 1990-91. Price became the first goalie in NHL history to win the Hart, Vezina and Jennings trophies and the Ted Lindsay Award.

The DUCKS had the top record in the Western Conference for the second consecutive season (51-24-7, 109 points).
The STARS’ Jamie Benn won the Art Ross Trophy (35+52) and became the first player in Stars history to lead the league in scoring.
The RED WINGS qualified for the playoffs for the 24th consecutive season, extending the longest active streak in North American professional sports.
The CAPITALS’ Alex Ovechkin scored 53 goals and won his third consecutive Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy and fifth overall.
The SENATORS became the first team in the NHL’s modern era (since 1943-44) to overcome a 14-point deficit in the standings and qualify for the playoffs.
The AVALANCHE were the only team in the NHL with six 50-point scorers, paced by team co-leaders Jarome Iginla (29+30) and Gabriel Landeskog (23+36).

THE SERIES [VS] CANADIENS
The Penguins open their 2015-16 home schedule Oct. 13 against the Montreal Canadiens, the team against which Pittsburgh played its first NHL game here on Oct. 11, 1967. This marks the fifth time the Penguins’ home opener is being played against the Canadiens, and Pittsburgh was 1-2-1 in the previous four: 1993 (2-1 OT win on a Joe Mullen goal), 1985 (3-5 loss in Patrick Roy’s first NHL start), 1968 (1-1 tie) and 1967 (1-2 loss). . . The Penguins went 2-1-0 against Montreal last season, winning twice on the road but dropping their only home game, 1-4, on Jan. 3. Four players had three points each to lead the Penguins in the series against the Canadiens last season — Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Beau Bennett and Steve Downie — while Max Pacioretty led Montreal with three points. . . Pittsburgh has killed 62 of its last 65 penalties against Montreal, with all three PPG by the Habs coming here in Pittsburgh. . . The Penguins host Ottawa on Oct. 15 and hope to build on their strong recent play against the Senators. Pittsburgh is 6-1-2 in its last nine games against Ottawa — four of the last five being decided after regulation. The Penguins have earned points in four straight home games against the Sens (3-0-1) and are 7-2-1 in their last 10 home games against Ottawa. . . Pittsburgh went 2-0-1 against Ottawa last season, winning the lone game played here on Dec. 6 (3-2). The homestand has a heavy Canadian flavor, as the Penguins host Toronto on Oct. 17 in a game that pits Phil Kessel against his former team for the first time. The homestand ends with games against Florida and Dallas. . . These games were expected to mark the return to home ice in the regular season for Kris Letang and Olli Maatta — both of whom suffered signficant injuries last season. Letang’s last game here was March 28 against Arizona and Maatta’s last here was Dec. 6 against Ottawa. . . Pittsburgh has won each of its last two home openers (against Anaheim last season and New Jersey) and hasn’t won three straight since 1993-95. . . My Slippery Rock College Location: roommate and I were trying to 224, C, 15-16 decide on a present to buy for our dads for Christmas. We decided First Season as a Penguins Season to buy the Christmas night game Ticket Holder: in 1969. The Penguins played the 1970 Bruins and beat them 4-2, with the Bruins having players such as Bobby Orr, Phil Esposito, Ken Hodge and Eddie Johnston. The sounds of the game, such as the horn when goals were scored, along with the beauty and speed of the game got me hooked. I came home for every weekend game the rest of the year and purchased my first season ticket in 1970. WITH WHOM DO YOU ATTEND PENGUINS HOME GAMES? Originally, my dad went to the games with me, but when his health deteriorated, a friend of mine took his ticket. Despite my dad’s health, he saw every one of Mario’s pre-season, regular season and post-season games. Even I missed a few of Mario’s games! continued on page 20

WHAT LESSER KNOWN PENGUINS PLAYER (PAST OR PRESENT) HAS LEFT A LASTING IMPRESSION ON YOU? WHAT DID HE DO TO MAKE THAT IMPRESSION? The lesser known players that made an impression on me first were Jim Paek and Jamie Leach. My sister somehow Ken’s friend, Hans Damerow, and Ken got them to attend an autograph session at a local grocery store. This was before the first Cup when the Penguins weren’t as popular, so only a handful of people showed up. However, they stayed the entire time and we had a great time just talking and telling jokes. The fact they stayed made a lasting impression on me and they were as cordial as ever. DO YOU HAVE ANY UNIQUE PRE OR POST-GAME PLAYOFF RITUALS? Wearing the same Penguins hat, Penguins jersey, eating the same pre-game meal and parking in the same parking lot for all home games. For away games, especially playoffs, I had a habit of cleaning my house during games. I guess it was to release nervous energy! PAST OR PRESENT, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE IN-GAME ENTERTAINMENT FEATURE? The honoring of the veterans, as they ride the Zambonis, is my favorite intermission promotion. I think it’s awesome to honor those that protected us and fought for our freedom throughout the years. DO YOU REMEMBER WHERE YOU WERE WHEN THE PENGUINS WON THE CUP IN ‘91, ‘92 OR ‘09? For the first two Cups, I was at the old Sports Garden at Station Square and managed to make it to the airport to see the Penguins arrive for the first Cup. For the third Cup, my friend Hans Damerow and I decided we didn’t want to be around crowds, so we watched it at his place. IN YOUR EYES, WHAT MAKES THE PITTSBURGH PENGUINS, OR HOCKEY IN GENERAL, GREAT? To me, the beauty of the game, the speed and skill of the game, and the fact that the players are doing this incredible stuff on skates, makes the game great. The level of fitness, agility, speed and endurance is just awesome.

The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex opened its doors for the first time this August and the action has been non-stop. The complex is not only home to the Pittsburgh Penguins, but also offers a number of great programs for everyone. The facility is equipped with cutting edge technology designed to increase athletic performance, a sprinting track, batting cages, and a hockey skills training space using RapidShot and RapidHands technology. You will also find a cafĂŠ with healthy menu options and retail space to purchase your favorite Penguins gear. With two full-size rinks, this state of the art facility offers programs for beginners to elite hockey players. Our Learn to Skate and public skating sessions provide ice time for those looking to improve their skills or just have an enjoyable afternoon with their family and friends. Youth ages 4-8 looking for a fun way to dive into the sport of hockey can participate in the Mite Development continued on page 31

If you want to enhance your performance or compete at the next level, we have several programs that focus on skating, shooting, and puck handling, all while improving overall athleticism. You can also work with one of our highly qualified coaches who specialize in power skating, hockey skills, or goalie training. All coaches have collegiate and professional experience, working to develop proper age appropriate training models. Former Penguins forward Gary Roberts leads the UPMC Sports Performance Center to provide athletes with safe and age appropriate strength and conditioning programs. There’s been a lot going on here at the new facility! The rink hosted the Labor Day Mite Jamboree featuring 4-8 year olds participating in cross-ice games to showcase their skills. Friends and family enjoyed the other festivities which included face painting, a bounce house, and an autograph session by Phil Bourque. The Mighty Penguins Sled Hockey fundraiser attracted fans from all over with former Olympian Dan McCoy leading the charge. The event raised funds and awareness for cognitively and physically disabled individuals in Pennsylvania. You can be a part of the excitement, too! Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, has been co-owner of the Penguins since 1999. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative tecÚology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including nine straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past eight years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open CONSOL Energy Center in August, 2010. The facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in tecÚology, retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, has been co-owner of the Penguins for 16 years. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they became one of the most outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. The Penguins reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009 and won the Cup in ‘09. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. David Morehouse is chief executive officer and president of the Penguins, overseeing all aspects of the team’s operation. The Penguins have become one of the NHL’s strongest business entities during his tenure — selling out every game for eight-plus seasons, setting new standards for corporate sales and television ratings and increasing their focus on innovative youth marketing. Morehouse joined the team as a consultant on the arena project in 2004 and was named team president in April 2007. He was given the additional responsibilities of chief executive officer in August 2010. Under his leadership, the Penguins have reshaped their strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, community interaction, corporate outreach and cutting-edge tecÚology. Beyond that, the Penguins have led all U.S.-based NHL teams in local television ratings for six-straight seasons and rank among the league leaders in social media followers, website traffic and merchandise sales. A strong commitment to fan outreach includes an annual event where players personally deliver season tickets to fans’ homes and a special preseason game were all 18,000 tickets are distributed free to local youth. Jim Rutherford is in his second season as executive vice president and general manager of the Penguins. During his first year, the Penguins qualified for their ninth-consecutive postseason berth despite playing a majority of the final two months without arguably the team’s top-three defensemen. Rutherford spent the previous 20 years as GM of the Carolina Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers franchise from 1994-2014 where he was a key architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team. In addition to his general manager duties, he also served 20 years as president of Carolina/Hartford, taking the post in 1994. In his role as president/GM, Rutherford oversaw operations on both the hockey and business sides of the organization. He helped spearhead the efforts to bring the 2004 NHL Draft and 2011 NHL All-Star Game to Raleigh. Over the course of his executive career, Rutherford has won multiple awards, including The Hockey News‘ Executive of the Year in 2002 and ’06. Additionally, he was voted by his NHL general management peers as Sporting News Executive of the Year in 2006. Before his 21 years in the NHL, Rutherford was recognized as the 1987 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Executive of the Year, and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Executive of the Year in back-to-back years with the Windsor Spitfires in 1987 and ’88. He oversaw a Spitfires team that won the OHL championship in 1988 and earned a berth in the Memorial Cup. In addition to his time with Hartford/Carolina, Rutherford also spent over 30 years working with Compuware Sports Corporation, overseeing the purchase of Windsor in 1984 and bringing the first American-based OHL franchise to Detroit in 1989. Rutherford played 13 years as a goaltender in the NHL, appearing in 457 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit. Selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round (10th overall) in the 1969 NHL Draft, he represented Canada at the 1977 and ’79 World Championships.

Jason Botterill is in his second season as associate general manager after being promoted from assistant general manager on June 6, 2014. As associate GM, Botterill assists GM Jim Rutherford on all hockey-related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also serves as GM of the Penguins’ top minorleague affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League (AHL). The WB/S Penguins have made the playoffs all six years he has overseen the team, including back-to-back berths in the Eastern Conference Final in 2013 and ‘14. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 39, spent the previous five years as the Penguins assistant GM from 2009-14, and the two years prior to that as the team’s director of hockey administration beginning in 2007-08 where he was a key architect of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team. Before joining the Penguins, Botterill worked for NHL Central Registry and as a scout for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the first round (20th overall) in 1994 NHL Draft and played in 88 NHL games for Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo before his career was cut short due to injury. He also suited up for 393 career minor-league games in the American and International Hockey Leagues, tallying 257 career points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four years of college hockey at the University of Michigan and helped lead the Wolverines to an NCAA title in 1996. Botterill represented Canada in three straight World Junior Championships from 1994-96, winning gold medals all three years. During the ’94 and ’95 WJCs, Botterill was coached by current Penguins head coach Mike JoÚston. Following his playing career, he received his MBA from his alma mater, the University of Michigan. Bill Guerin is in his second season as assistant general manager after serving as Pittsburgh’s player development coach from 2011-14. Guerin’s responsibilities as assistant general manager include serving as a liaison between the players and management. As the Penguins’ player development coach, Guerin was instrumental in helping develop the Penguins’ minor league, junior and college prospects. Originally drafted by New Jersey in the first round (5th overall) of the 1989 NHL Draft, Guerin won two Stanley Cups (Pittsburgh, 2009; New Jersey, 1995) and spent 18 seasons in the NHL — including his final two with the Penguins. Guerin’s leadership and on-ice performance after being acquired at the NHL trade deadline was a key in Pittsburgh’s ’09 title. Guerin, a four-time NHL All-Star, tallied 429 career goals and 856 points in 1,263 career NHL games, including five 30-goal and two 40goal seasons. Jason Karmanos is in his second season as the vice president of hockey operations after being named to his current position on June 12, 2014. Karmanos assists GM Jim Rutherford in all aspects of hockey operations. Before joining Pittsburgh, Karmanos spent 15 years as an executive for the Carolina Hurricanes from 1998-2013, serving various roles with Carolina, including executive director of hockey operations and vice president/assistant general manager under Rutherford. Karmanos played four years of college hockey at Harvard University from 1992-96, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors. In 1994, Karmanos represented Team USA at the World Junior Championships, compiling three points (1G-2A) in seven games. After graduating, Karmanos attended training camp with the Penguins in 1996 and played pro hockey for two seasons before his career was cut short due to an eye injury. MIKE JOHNSTON HEAD COACH
Mike JoÚston is in his second season as head coach of the Penguins. In his first year, JoÚston helped the Penguins earn the team’s ninth-consecutive postseason berth. He had the highest point total (56) and best points percentage (.683) thru 41 games among any Penguins coach in their first full season behind the bench in team history. Before joining the Penguins, JoÚston spent six years as the general manager/head coach of the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League (WHL) from 2008-13, where he helped turn Portland into a Canadian Hockey League powerhouse and perennial contender. Under JoÚston’s guidance, Portland made four straight WHL Championship berths (2010-14), winning the WHL championship and earning a Memorial Cup berth in 2012-13. During that time his team won four straight conference championships. JoÚston’s teams were known for their offensive prowess — during his six seasons with Portland, his team’s goals for total rose each year from 176 in 2008-09 to a league-leading 338 in ‘13-14. JoÚston also served two NHL stints as assistant/associate coach of the Vancouver Canucks (1999-06) and associate coach of the Los Angeles Kings (2006-08). With JoÚston’s help, Vancouver made four straight trips to the postseason and won the Northwest Division crown in 2003-04. He has represented his country multiple times internationally, including serving as assistant coach of Canada’s 1998 Olympic Team. As an assistant/associate coach for Team Canada, he has won five medals (2 gold; 2 silver; 1 bronze) at the World Championships and two gold medals at the World Junior Championships. JoÚston has authored three books with former NHL player Ryan Walter: Simply the Best: Insights and Strategies from Great Hockey Coaches, Simply the Best: Players on Performance and Hockey Plays and Strategies. He played college hockey at Brandon University in Manitoba and Acadia University in Nova Scotia and has a Master’s Degree in coaching science from Acadia University.

RICK TOCCHET ASSISTANT COACH
Rick Tocchet is in his second season as an assistant coach of the Penguins. In his current role, Tocchet works closely with the team’s forwards and the power play. Tocchet was hired as an assistant coach by Tampa Bay in July, 2008 and was elevated to interim head coach on Nov. 14 of that year. He was named head coach following the ‘08-09 season, where he remained in that position until 2010. Tocchet began his coaching career as an assistant with the Colorado Avalanche for two years (2002-04) before spending one season (‘05-06) with the Phoenix Coyotes. A veteran of 18 NHL seasons, including parts of three seasons with the Penguins from 1992-94, Tocchet won a Stanley Cup championship with Pittsburgh in 1992. The four-time NHL All-Star (1989, ‘90, ‘91, ‘93) played 1,144 career NHL games and totaled 440 goals, 952 points and 2,972 penalty minutes in his NHL career. Tocchet was originally drafted by Philadelphia in the sixth round (125th overall) of the 1983 NHL Draft.
GARY AGNEW ASSISTANT COACH
Gary Agnew is in his second season as an assistant coach with the Penguins. During his first season with Pittsburgh, Agnew helped the club finish with the NHL’s third-highest penalty kill success rate at 84.8 percent. Prior to joining Pittsburgh, Agnew was an assistant coach for the St. Louis Blues for two seasons from 2012-14, helping the Blues win the fifth-most games in the NHL during that span (81). Agnew spent four years as an assistant coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets from 2006-10, where he helped the Blue Jackets earn a postseason berth for the first time in franchise history in 2008-09. As head coach of the American Hockey League’s Syracuse Crunch from 2000-06, Agnew won a franchise-record 220 games, and he led Syracuse to its first-ever division title in 2001-02. He also has 14 years of coaching experience in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), including 11 as a head coach. He has won over 350 career OHL games with London (1989-94, ‘97-00), Kingston (1994-97) and Oshawa (2011-12). Agnew was named OHL Coach of the Year twice — in 1993 and ’98.

MIKE BALES GOALTENDING COACH
Mike Bales is in his third season as the Penguins goaltending coach after serving the previous two seasons as the team’s goaltending development coach from 2011-13. Under his guidance, Marc-Andre Fleury has compiled two of the finest seasons of his career. During the 2014-15 campaign, Fleury established a franchise record with 10 shutouts, a figure that led the entire NHL. When he was in his role as goaltending development coach, Bales helped lead the scouting efforts that led to Pittsburgh choosing reigning AHL Goaltender of the Year Matt Murray and 2013 second-round pick Tristan Jarry. Bales, a native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, spent 18 seasons playing professionally from 1992-2010, including stints in the NHL with Boston and Ottawa. Bales also saw action with teams in the AHL, IHL, Germany, Sweden and Northern Ireland. He was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the fifth round (105th overall) of the 1990 NHL Draft. Before turning pro, Bales played three collegiate seasons with Ohio State University of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) from 1989-92.
JACQUES MARTIN SPECIAL ASSISTANT TO THE HEAD COACH
Jacques Martin enters his third season in the Penguins organization, his first as special assistant to the head coach. His primary role will be to analyze games from the media level and provide instant observations to head coach Mike JoÚston and his staff. Martin spent last year as a senior advisor to Penguins GM Jim Rutherford, and the season before that as an assistant coach. Martin has over 25 years of NHL experience as a general manager, head coach and assistant coach with Pittsburgh, Montreal, Florida, Ottawa, Colorado/Quebec, Chicago and St. Louis. He won 613 games and made 12 playoff appearances in 17 seasons as an NHL head coach. He won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s ‘most outstanding coach’ with Ottawa in 1999 and was a finalist for the award on three other occasions. Martin won gold medals as an assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2002 Olympics and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. He was also an assistant coach on the 2006 Canadian Olympic Team.

Travis Williams is in his eighth season as a senior executive with the Pittsburgh Penguins, currently serving as chief operating officer and overseeing finance, legal affairs, tecÚology, business development and arena operations. He also assists CEO David Morehouse in the day-to-day management of the business. In addition, Williams serves as the Penguins’ point man on the development of the former Civic Arena site and oversaw the construction of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry. Williams joined the Penguins in 2008 as senior vice president of business affairs/legal counsel. One of his first responsibilities was to guide the construction and development of the team’s new arena, CONSOL Energy Center — which was completed on time and under budget. He now serves as the team’s liaison with building manager AEG Facilities, working closely with AEG on all arena-related events, including major concerts and national-level sporting events. Previously, Williams has been a partner at Reed Smith LLP, where he specialized in mergers and acquisitions, investment management, commercial lending and general corporate matters. During his 12 years at Reed Smith, Williams also represented several sports franchises, regional sports networks and other sports-related businesses. A native of Indianapolis, he graduated from Penn State and received a Juris Doctorate from Duquesne University, summa cum laude. While at Duquesne, he was a member of the Duquesne Law Review and the Duquesne Business Law Journal.

SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT OF SALES AND BROADCASTING
Terry Kalna is in his first season as senior vice president of sales and broadcasting following an 18-year career in motorsports management. Kalna, 39, a native of Greensburg, oversees corporate sales, partnership activation, ticket sales and premium sales in addition to the Penguins Radio Network. He also is the primary contact with ROOT SPORTS, the Penguins’ local television rightsholder. Kalna spent the previous eight years as managing director of International Speedway Corporation, a sister company to NASCAR that operates 13 racetracks across the country — including Daytona, Talladega, Darlington and Richmond. Kalna also has deep connections to hockey. He has been a member of USA Hockey’s Marketing Council since 2011 and recently earned his USA Hockey Level 5 coaching certification. He played youth hockey in Greensburg and for the Amateur Penguins before moving on to prep school hockey at Tabor Academy and Cranbrook Kingswood School. He graduated from Hobart College in 1998 with degrees in economics and history.

On August 25, over thirty former Pittsburgh Penguins’ players and coaches hit the links at the 18th Annual Penguins Alumni Charity Golf Classic at Valley Brook Country Club in McMurray. Each decade of Penguins’ PENGUINS hockey was represented at the event. Penguins Vice President and ALUMNI TEE OFF General Manager Jim Rutherford attended along with Head Coach Mike Johnston and the team’s coaching staff. The event was created in 1998 to benefit children’s charities and the alumni scholarship program. Proceeds from the 2015 tournament benefitted ACHIEVA, Magee-Womens Research Institute & Foundation and the Mario Lemieux Foundation. Since its inception, the event has raised over $585,000 for local charities. In addition, the Alumni Association has awarded 11 hockey-based scholarships to deserving high school scholar-athletes from tournament proceeds.

IF YOU COULD WEAR ANY NUMBER, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY? No. 11. My dad picked it out for me when I was little and it’s my favorite number. WHO WERE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE SPORTS TEAMS TO FOLLOW WHILE GROWING UP? I’m a big Yankees fan in baseball, Patriots fan in football — although I might have to change that (laughs) — and a Cleveland Cavaliers fan in basketball. But in hockey I just follow my favorite players, there wasn’t a favorite team. But now it’s the Penguins. OUTSIDE OF HOCKEY, WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE SPORTS TO WATCH? I would say tennis or golf. I used to play tennis as a little kid, so I enjoy watching and playing it. With golf, it’s nice and relaxing to watch on Sundays, like when Jordan Speith won the U.S. Open. WHEN YOU’RE NOT AT THE RINK, WHAT ARE YOU DOING? Being with friends and going out to dinner, just being with family. Just relaxing and getting my mind away from the game. But at the same time, my mind is always on trying to get better. The Penguins spent a majority of a recent practice working 3-on-3 in preparation for the NHL’s new overtime format. The NHL adopted the new style for the upcoming season in the hopes of adding more excitement and avoiding the shootout to decide the outcome the game. “It’s a team sport,” forward David Perron said. “A 3-on-3 is a lot better than going into a shootout, which puts a lot more pressure on the shooter or the goalie. I think I like the team aspect better.” NHL coaches around the league are trying to figure out how to strategize and execute in the 3-on-3 scenario. Every team was allotted three 3-on-3 overtimes in the preseason to test it out. Pittsburgh scored in all three contests. The Penguins used some extra practice time to make sure they’re fine tuning their strategy. “I thought the guys were good. They adapted well,” head coach Mike Johnston said. “The other thing it did was give us coaches a chance to watch longer 3-on-3 to see if there are any other things we want to tweak in it.” As with most teams, when the puck is in the defensive zone the Penguins will play man coverage. But when it is in the offensive zone, they’ll let their natural talents and abilities take over. “We have a plan,” center Evgeni Malkin said. “In the D zone we play 1-on-1 of course. In the offensive zone you do what you want, control the puck, change sides, shoot the puck, go to the net. We just have to play smart in the D zone.” continued on page 95

And when the Penguins are changing, it will behoove them to retreat deep into their own zone, change and then start the rush. “You bring the puck back, you regroup and take your time,” Perron said. “Even if you have to bring it to the goalie, buy some time for the guys to change and get on the ice with fresh legs.” There will be a lot of pressure on the players on the ice, but a lot of excitement for the fans in the stands. “Every puck that you touch can be a deciding factor one way or the other. There is a lot more pressure,” Perron said. 95

In 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation embarked on a new venture in the educational space. Understanding the importance of KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE tecÚology in the classroom, the Foundation developed a one-of-a-kind program that would combine the latest in tablet tecÚology with the ever changing landscape in today’s classroom. This program became Tablets in Education. Since it’s inception, Tablets in Education has provided over 120 schools and educational programs in Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Lawrence, Mercer, Washington and Westmoreland counties with a total of 2,700 Kindle Fire tablets. In 2015, the Foundation purchased over 150,000 apps and specialized content for the program. Along with support of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, educators and administrators have the guidance of the Allegheny Intermediate Unit 3. Creating training and continuing education sessions to optimize the use of the Kindle devices. PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER
One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 41th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK COLOR ANALYST
Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 13th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

Josh is in his first season as a Radio Broadcast Host and PensTV Host with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He joins the Penguins after spending the previous two years as the sports director for FOX Champaign in Champaign, Illinois. While in Champaign, Josh covered the University of Illinois and Big Ten athletics, local high school athletics, and various professional teams in the region. In June of 2015, Josh was named the Television Sportscaster of the Year by the Illinois Broadcasters Association. In addition to his time in Illinois, Josh has also worked as a sports anchor/ reporter at WENY-TV and radio update anchor at 1410 WELM ESPN Radio in Elmira, New York, and served as a member of the on-site production team during NBC’s coverage of Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia. He is a graduate of Ithaca College’s Roy H. Park School of Communications in Ithaca, New York.

Heads UP Pittsburgh is a first of its kind program that has served as the blueprint for other NHL and professional sports organizations since KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE its creation in 2010. Heads UP Pittsburgh is a partnership with UPMC Sports Medicine and funded by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. The purpose of the program is to reduce the amount of concussions in youth sports by providing free baseline concussion testing to young athletes, developing educational initiatives for athletes, parents, coaches, officials, teachers and pediatricians and finally support research projects. The results are quite impressive, since 2011 the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine have been able to: Baseline tests over 17,000 athletes, ages seven to 14 in 30 different sports Our staffs have educated over 45,000 people about concussions and sports related injuries 50,000 educational brochures were distributed at baseline test sites, pediatrician offices, schools and local rinks The Foundation funded over 4,000 neck strengthening kits with protocols to develop neck strength in young players From the neck strengthening program 500+ athletes became involved in a concussion research project Addressing other sport injuries the Foundation provided 3,000 free Duraband flexibility kits Next year we will introduce a new pediatric version of the baseline test targeted at seven to nine year-old players. Earlier this summer, during the second round of the 2015 NHL Draft in Sunrise, Florida, the 45th pick came and went and the members of the Pittsburgh Penguins delegation were in shock. Their disbelief stemmed from the fact that winger Daniel Sprong from the Charlottetown Islanders of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League was still available. So without hesitation, the Penguins selected Sprong with their first pick of the draft, number 46. “The two famous lines from every draft are ‘we couldn’t believe he was still there’ and ‘we had him a lot higher on our list,’” director of amateur scouting Randy Sexton said that night. “Both were true today for Sprong.” Sprong was ranked No. 20 among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting and was projected to be selected in the first round. continued on page 131

“I was very disappointed, of course, that I didn’t end up going into the first,” Sprong said. “But when Pittsburgh called my name, that [went] away and I just wanted to prove Pittsburgh right — that they picked the right guy and I want to show them I can play in the NHL as soon as possible.” Little did anyone know, “as soon as possible” meant “immediately” for Sprong, as the 18-year-old rookie earned himself a spot in the Penguins’ opening night lineup. “I knew the roster was going to be very hard to make,” Sprong said. Just over three weeks ago, other than playing on a line with Sidney Crosby in training camp, that’s all Sprong had in mind. “Just taking it day by day,” Sprong said at the beginning of training camp. “Learning as much as I can from the older guys, just soaking it all in and working hard.” As head coach Mike Johnston described it, Sprong’s “take-charge” attitude proved successful for him in the past. continued on page 132

Two years ago, Sprong arrived for his first training camp with Charlottetown and went on to lead the team in scoring for two consecutive seasons. “I remember when I was 16 going into my first junior year training camp,” Sprong recalled. “I walk into the room and I’m the youngest guy there. Same thing here. Youngest guy here.” But with two goals and three points in five preseason games, the rookie looked more like a veteran. “The second I started playing more games I felt more and more comfortable,” Sprong said. “I thought that I could really play here this year if I got an opportunity and I’m very happy I did.” In 2013, another Penguins rookie earned the same opportunity. Defenseman Olli Maatta joined the team to start the 2013-14 NHL season and never looked back. continued on page 143

“I remember for me, it was always kind of living on your toes,” Maatta recalled. “You weren’t sure if they were going to send you back.” The now 21-year-old blueliner offered a bit of advice to his new teammate. “Just enjoy it. Take it one day at a time,” Maatta said. “It’s the NHL. It’s unbelievable.” When Sprong took the ice on Oct. 8 against the Dallas Stars at the American Airlines Center, he became the first hockey player born in the Netherlands to play in the NHL since St. Louis Blues’ defenseman Ed Kea in 1983. If Sprong continues to make the most of his opportunity, he will be facing the Montreal Canadiens on Oct. 13 for his first NHL game on CONSOL Energy Center ice. The Penguins can keep him in the lineup up to nine games before his entry-level contract kicks in. ICEBURGH Iceburgh, the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins, has been entertaining hockey fans worldwide since 1992. As one of the Penguins’ most popular ambassadors, not to mention one of the NHL’s most beloved mascots, you can find Iceburgh leading cheers, beating drums and dancing in the aisles at every Penguins home game, attending major hockey events around the world, visiting local schools, or just spending time at area hospitals and community events. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. Last season, during his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game in Columbus, Iceburgh helped the Eastern Conference mascots defeat the Western Conference by scoring two goals and two assists in the first annual NHL Mascot Showdown while also emerging victorious in the mascot dance competition. Mike Johnston is no longer one of the new guys on the block. Johnston is poised for his second season behind the Penguins’ bench, which means he’s no longer on the bottom rung of the NHL’s seniority ladder in terms of the location of the bench he’s standing behind. Another season has brought with it another round of coaching changes and another collection of mentors in charge of teams they hadn’t been previously. Time to acquaint, or in several cases reacquaint ourselves with those who have taken over for 2015-16: BUFFALO: Dan Bylsma is back. His NHL resume includes becoming the fastest coach in NHL history to achieve 250 regular-season wins (396 regular-season games), becoming the all-time winningest coach in Penguins history (252-117-32) and winning the 2009 Stanley Cup during his six seasons in Pittsburgh. The Penguins made the playoffs six times under Bylsma, and his career points percentage (.688) ranks first in NHL history among coaches with at least three full seasons. Bylsma won the NHL’s Jack Adams Award as the league’s outstanding coach in 2009. continued on page 157

DETROIT: Former Red Wings assistant coach Jeff Blashill has moved up in class from the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins, where he had been the head coach since 2012-13. Blashill sent 24 players from Grand Rapids to the Motor City over the last three seasons. Blashill, a Detroit native who was raised in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., compiled a 134-71-12-11 regular-season record, won the Calder Cup (AHL Championship) in 2013 and was voted the AHL’s outstanding coach in 2013-14.

EDMONTON: Todd McLellan arrives from San Jose with a career record of 311-163-66 in 540 regular-season games. McLellan’s Sharks teams went to the playoffs six times, had four 40-win seasons, three 100-point seasons, won three Pacific Division championships and captured the President’s Trophy (NHL’s top regular-season team) in 2008-09. McLellan’s 195 wins in his first four seasons are the most in NHL history.
NEW JERSEY: Another familiar face to Penguins fans will be in charge of the Devils this season. Former Penguins general manager Ray Shero has turned to John Hynes as the 17th head coach in franchise history. Hynes spent the last six seasons with the Penguins’ AHL affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, including the last five seasons as the head coach. PHILADELPHIA: The Flyers are giving it the old college try this season with Dave Hakstol. The 19th head coach in Philadelphia history spent the last 11 seasons running up a 289-143-11 record at the University of North Dakota. Hakstol took North Dakota to 11 NCAA Tournaments, seven Frozen Fours and one NCAA Championship Game in his 11 seasons. SAN JOSE: Peter DeBoer has done this before. The eighth head coach in franchise history spent the past three-plus seasons as the head coach of the Devils. DeBoer crafted a 114-93-41 regular-season record with the Devils and took New Jersey to the 2012 Stanley Cup Final. He’s been a head coach at either the NHL or the Canadian Hockey League level for the past 20 seasons. TORONTO: The Maple Leafs brought in Mike Babcock from the Red Wings as the 30th head coach in franchise history. Babcock’s list of achievements includes a 458-223-105 regular-season record in 10 seasons running the Red Wings. Babcock’s teams in Detroit won a Stanley Cup in 2008, lost a Stanley Cup Final to the Penguins in 2009 and captured the President’s Trophy in 2005-06 and again in 2007-08. There are also a couple of general managers in different places for 2015-16: DON SWEENEY has taken over in Boston after having spent the past six seasons as the assistant general manager of the Bruins. Sweeney had also been the director of player development and the director of hockey operations in Boston. PETER CHIARELLI, the former GM of the Bruins, is the new president of hockey operations and general manager in Edmonton. SHERO begins his GM tenure in New Jersey after having hired Bylsma and winning a Stanley Cup with the Penguins. And LOU LAMORIELLO has moved to Toronto after 28 seasons and three Stanley Cups in New Jersey.

DRAFT CLASS DANIEL SPRONG
Forward • 2nd round, 46th overall Sprong, who was ranked 20th among North American skaters heading into the 2015 NHL Draft by Central Registry, paced the Charlottetown Islanders of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in goals (39), assists (49) and points (88) for the second straight season in 2014-15. The previous year, Sprong finished second among QMJHL rookies with 68 points (30G-38A-68P) in 67 games en route to being named to the League’s All-Rookie Team. BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Sprong was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands where his father, Hannie, played professional hockey in Holland in the early 1990s. Daniel, who models parts of his game after Ilya Kovalchuk (particularly his shot), hopes to become the first Dutch-born NHL player since Ed Kea. He is a Yankees fan in baseball, Patriots fan in football (though he laughed he may need to change that) and a Cleveland Cavaliers fan in basketball.

BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Simon, the youngest player on the Czech team at the 2015 World Championship, was paired on a line with the team’s most senior member, former Penguin Jaromir Jagr — and the two combined for a goal against France. Simon finished that tournament with six points (1G-5A) in 10 games. Simon also helped his country top Canada at the 2014 World Junior Championship with the game-deciding shootout goal. He has become a Pirates fan since coming to North America.
FREDERICK TIFFELS
Forward • 6th round, 167th overall In 2014-15 Tiffels posted nine goals and 19 points in his freshman season with Western Michigan under Andy Murray, who previously served as the head coach of the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings (1999-2006) and the St. Louis Blues (2006-10). Before joining the Broncos, Tiffels also played one season in the USHL with Cedar Rapids, Fargo and Muskegon. BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Tiffels is a native of Cologne, Germany and he represented his country in the 2014 and ’15 World Junior Championships. He came overseas to play hockey in the USHL and now college. Tiffels is a big soccer fan and follows his hometown club, FC Koln. His favorite player on the team is Lukas Podolski.
NIKITA PAVLYCHEV
Forward • 7th round, 197th overalll Pavlychev, a native of Yaroslavl, Russia, posted 16 points (6G-10A) and 80 penalty minutes in 42 games with Des Moines of the USHL in 2014-15. He has incredible size for a forward at 6-foot-7 and 200 pounds. BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Pavlychev cut his hockey teeth in Pennsylvania with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights, a junior team, then in the Atlantic Junior Hockey League, alongside fellow draft pick Daniel Sprong. Pavlychev has committed to play collegiate hockey this season for Penn State University.

BUILDING INFORMATION ALCOHOL Guests of CONSOL Energy Center must be 21 years of age or older to purchase and/or consume alcoholic beverages. BANNERS AND SIGNS Banners and signs are permitted for most events, providing they are appropriate, as deemed by building management. Signs must not be commercial in nature or utilize wood, metal or other types of objects for support. EMERGENCY EVACUATION In the event of an emergency, CONSOL Energy Center staff will utilize the public address (PA) system

ENTRANCES AND EXITS There are four (4) points of entry into CONSOL Energy Center: Peoples Gate (Fifth Avenue and Washington Place), Trib Total Media Gate (Centre Avenue Lower Entrance), Verizon Gate (Centre Avenue Upper Entrance), and a private parking garage entrance for suite ticket holders.
FAMILY RESTROOMS Family restrooms are available on all levels of CONSOL Energy Center near sections 106/107, 108, 115, 121, 213, 225, party suite 44 and suite 13.
FIRST AID There are two (2) First Aid Stations presented by UPMC, one on each level of CONSOL Energy Center. First Aid is located adjacent to the Guest Services office outside section 104 and behind the concession stand at section 232.
FOOD AND BEVERAGES No food or beverages of any kind are permitted to be brought into CONSOL Energy Center. Concession stands located throughout the arena sell a wide variety of food, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. A limited number of wheelchairs are available for transporting guests that are disabled to their seating location. Guests can be transported from the gates to their seats. If a wheelchair is needed for the duration of the event, guests must supply their own wheelchairs. Wheelchairs cannot be reserved in advance. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark Hosanna House/Sherwood Event Center Wilkinsburg have completed a four year Lewis Park Hazelwood $2.3 million initiative. In September 2015, the last North Park McCandless dek rink was completed Paul J. Scuillo II Memorial Park Bloomfield bringing the total Renzie Park McKeesport completed rinks to 12. Richland Community Park Richland Twp. In 2012, the Pittsburgh Riverside Park Oakmont Penguins Foundation and Settler’s Cabin Park Oakdale Highmark created Project South Park Community Park South Park Power Play, to provide athletes with a multipurpose surface to enjoy dek hockey and other sports. Each rink received a dasher board system, scoreboard, player benches, metal shelters, a penalty box, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment.
