The Series vs. Red Wings

The Penguins and Detroit Red Wings play this afternoon for the third and final time this regular season and the second time here in Pittsburgh. . . The Penguins earned a 5-3 home victory over the Wings on Dec. 3, overcoming 2-0 and 3-1 leads built by Detroit. Goals by Nick Bonino and Justin Schultz in the opening seven minutes of the third period forged a 3-3 tie, and Phil Kessel’s second goal of the game at 10:54 put the Penguins ahead to stay. . . On Jan. 14 in Detroit, it was the Wings’ turn to wipe out a 2-0 deficit, scoring six of the game’s final seven goals for a 6-3 victory. Andreas Athanasiou broke a 3-3 tie two minutes into the third period of the Penguins’ final regular season game at Joe Louis Arena. Kris Letang, Evgeni Malkin and Matt Cullen had the Pittsburgh goals. . . The Wings’ home victory last month snapped their four-game losing

streak against Pittsburgh. . . The Penguins are 6-2-0 in their last eight home games against the Wings, winning two of those games in shootouts. . . The Wings have blanked the Penguins’ power play in nine of their last 10 games here, including four straight. . . This is the third afternoon game between the teams in the last three seasons. The Penguins have won four of their last seven matinees against Detroit, including a 7-2 victory in Detroit last March 26. . . Pittsburgh is 68-63-3 with 16 ties all-time against the Wings, including a mark of 50-21-0 with four ties at home. . . Henrik Zetterberg averages 1.1 points per game in his career against the Penguins (12+9 in 19 games), fourth-highest among active players who have at least 20 career points against Pittsburgh. . . Detroit is the only current Eastern Conference team against which Sidney Crosby does not average at least one point per game. He has 15 points in 17 career regular season games against the Wings. . . Pittsburgh is coming off a game in Columbus on Friday night and will play in Carolina on Tuesday before hosting the Philadelphia Flyers in the NHL Stadium Series on Saturday night at Heinz Field. . . The Penguins were third in the Metropolitan Division, nine points behind first-place Washington after earning three of four possible points in a quick two-game road trip to Colorado (4-1 win) and Arizona (4-3 OT loss). Pittsburgh began last week with home games against Vancouver and Winnipeg. . . Josh Archibald, playing in his second NHL game and first this season, scored his first two NHL goals in the loss to the Coyotes. The second of those was a shorthanded goal. . . Malkin was expected to return to the lineup Feb. 14 against the Canucks after missing seven games with a lower-body injury. The Penguins were also missing Carl Hagelin (concussion), Bryan Rust and Conor Sheary (upper body) in the loss to the Coyotes. . . Crosby entered the game against Vancouver needing two points to become the 86th player in NHL history to record 1,000 points. Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr are the only other players to record 1,000 points all in a Pittsburgh uniform. . . Tom Kuhnhackl had his first point in 10 games, an assist, in the loss to Arizona. . . Goaltender Matt Murray was 15-2-3 in his first 20 regular season home decisions before play began last week, with a goals-against average of 2.33 and save percentage of .926. . . Through their first 54 games this season, the Penguins were second in the NHL in shots per game (34.2). . . After this game, the Penguins play eight of their next 11 on the road, including a five-game trip March 8-15. . . Ian Cole was sixth in the NHL in blocked shots (129) before facing the Canucks here last week. He had 122 in 70 games last season and was on pace for 196 this season, which would easily surpass the Pittsburgh team record for a single season (149), set by Zbynek Michalek in 2010-11. . . Bonino, meanwhile, was averaging 1.2 blocks per game in his Pittsburgh career prior to last week, the highest figure in Penguins’ history among forwards.

Season Ticket Holder

SPOTLIGHT

What is your earliest memory of Penguins hockey? When I was eight-years-old, my uncle would babysit me at his house. He always had the games on and recorded all of the goals onto VHS tapes. His love for the game rubbed off on me. Now I run the Pittsburgh Hockey Hall of Fame, Double Deke Hockey, Cranberry Dek Hockey, and soon to be North Hills Dek Hockey.

John Balawejder Hometown: Pittsburgh, PA Season Ticket Location: Section 106

11 YEAR

Penguins Season Ticket Holder

What motivated you to become a season ticket holder? The day we won the Crosby lottery I called my wife and told her “I never got to see Mario play at the beginning of his career, we aren’t going to miss this Crosby kid.” I have been a season ticket holder ever since. Aside from on-ice action, what do you enjoy most about attending Penguins games? The video introductions. What lesser known Penguins player (past or present) has left a lasting impression on you? What did he do to make that impression? Colby Armstrong. I loved the way he played the game and he is hilarious. John and his brother Steve after winning the Roller Hockey USA National Championship.

What is the most unique keepsake in your personal collection of Penguins memorabilia? My top five are... Mario Lemieux’s game worn rookie jersey, Jaromir Jagr’s game worn rookie jersey from his first NHL hat trick, Michel Briere’s Penguins glove, Jordan Staal’s helmet and gloves from Game Seven of the Final, and Les Binkley’s early Penguins goalie pads. What non-Penguins players do you enjoy seeing on PPG Paints Arena ice? Pekka Rinne, Jonathan Quick, Alex Ovechkin, and Jaromir Jagr. What has been your favorite off-ice Penguins event to attend and why? The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex tour. It was great to see the behind the scenes stuff. What is your favorite memory from the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoff run? The Nick Bonino OT goal versus the Capitals. In your eyes, what makes the Pittsburgh Penguins, or hockey in general, great? It’s the best game in the world. Hockey requires a total team effort and because of that, I believe guys are more humble than in other sports. Its fast pace and constant action create a great entertainment product.

Sharks D Brent Burns scored a pair of goals in San Jose’s 4-1 win on Feb. 12 at New Jersey and emerged with 59 points on the season (24+35), just two behind Connor McDavid of Edmonton (61) for the NHL scoring lead. Burns’ career-high fifth game-winning goal of the season tied the single-season franchise record for defensemen in that department (Bill Houlder, 1998-99). Burns also set a franchise record for road goals in a season by a defenseman (16) and became the first NHL defenseman to net than many away from home since Kevin Hatcher of Washington in 1992-93 (17).

VS

G Henrik Lundqvist registered his 400th career victory in New York’s 4-2 win over Colorado on Feb. 11. Lundqvist, a native of Sweden, became the first European-born netminder to reach the 400-win plateau and became the fastest NHL goalie to 400 wins (727 games) when he bettered the standard established by Martin Brodeur (735 games). Lundqvist also joined Brodeur (688 wins with New Jersey) and Tony Esposito (418 wins with Chicago) in becoming the third goaltender to achieve 400 wins with one franchise.

MARIO LEMIEUX Co-Owner/Chairman

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in the National Hockey League, added a new line to his Hall of Fame career last season: Two-time champion owner. The Penguins claimed the Cup for the second time since Lemieux and partner Ron Burkle bought the team out of bankruptcy in 1999. It gave him four Stanley Cups overall, including two as a player in 1991 and 1992. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice – including 10 straight playoff appearances and four conference final appearances in the past nine seasons, in addition to the two Cups. The Penguins entered the 2016-17 season having sold out every game for nineplus seasons while setting new standards for television ratings, corporate sales and social media. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open the arena in August, 2010. The facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. The Penguins ownership group, local labor organizations and members of the Pittsburgh business community honored Lemieux in 2012 with a statue to commemorate his career and contributions to the city and the region. Appropriately named “Le Magnifique,” the statue, by nationally-acclaimed sculptor Bruce Wolfe, can be seen outside of PPG Paints Arena. For full bio, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

RON BURKLE Co-Owner

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing, technology and distribution industries, is in his 18th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports, leading the team to Stanley Cup championships in 2009 and 2016. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. PPG Paints Arena is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh, including NCAA basketball and hockey. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for nine-plus seasons and consistently ranked among the most fan-friendly and community-minded teams in the NHL and all of pro sports. The Penguins have earned 10 straight playoff berths and reached the conference finals four times in the past nine years, in addition to the two Stanley Cups. The team’s solid foundation of ownership has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign many of the team’s core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award. DAVID MOREHOUSE Chief Executive Officer & President

David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Stanley Cupchampion Penguins, overseeing all aspects of the team’s operation. The Penguins have become one of the NHL’s strongest business entities during his tenure — selling out every game for nine-plus seasons, setting new standards for television ratings and corporate sales and increasing their focus on innovative youth marketing. Morehouse joined the team as consultant on the new arena project in 2004 and was named team president in April 2007. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer just as the new arena was opening in August 2010. Under his leadership, the Penguins have reshaped their strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, community interaction, corporate outreach and cutting-edge technology, while maintaining a high level of performance on the ice. A strong commitment to fan outreach includes an annual event where players personally deliver season tickets to fans’ homes and a special preseason game were all 18,000 tickets are distributed free to local youth. Morehouse also was a driving force behind the new UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, which opened in August 2015. It is the first facility to combine hockey with a world-class medical center and sports performance complex. Morehouse joined the Penguins following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill — as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He is a native of the Pittsburgh neighborhood of Beechview.

JIM RUTHERFORD Executive Vice President & General Manager

Jim Rutherford enters his third year as Penguins executive vice president and general manager fresh off the greatest season of his managerial career. During the course of the 2015-16 campaign, Rutherford transformed the Penguins into Stanley Cup champions, thanks in large part to his acquisitions of Phil Kessel, Nick Bonino, Trevor Daley and Carl Hagelin, plus the promotion of Mike Sullivan to head coach in December of 2015. When the Penguins defeated the San Jose Sharks to win the franchise’s fourth Stanley Cup on June 12, 2016, Rutherford became the first GM in the post-1967 Expansion Era to manage multiple teams to Cup victories, having also done so with Carolina in 2006. As a reward for quick, on-the-fly re-shaping of the Penguins’ roster, Rutherford won the NHL General Manager of the Year Award for his work in ’15-16. Rutherford spent the previous 20 years as GM of the Carolina Hurricanes/ Hartford Whalers franchise from 1994-2014, where he was a key architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team. In addition to his general manager duties, he also served 20 years as president of Carolina/Hartford, taking the post in 1994. In his role as president/GM, Rutherford oversaw operations on both the hockey and business sides of the organization. Over the course of his executive career, Rutherford has won multiple awards, including The Hockey News‘ Executive of the Year in 2002 and ’06. Additionally, he was voted by his NHL general management peers as Sporting News ‘Executive of the Year’ in 2006. Before his 22 years in the NHL, Rutherford was recognized as the 1987 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Executive of the Year, and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Executive of the Year in back-to-back years with the Windsor Spitfires in 1987 and ’88. He oversaw a Spitfires team that won the OHL championship in 1988 and earned a berth in the Memorial Cup. Rutherford played 13 years as a goaltender in the NHL, appearing in 457 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit. He was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round (10th overall) of the 1969 NHL Draft. For full bio, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

JASON BOTTERILL Associate General Manager

Jason Botterill enters this third season as associate general manager having assisted GM Jim Rutherford in making numerous personnel moves over the last year that resulted in the Penguins winning the Stanley Cup in 2016, the second championship Botterill has helped build during his tenure in Pittsburgh. As associate GM, Botterill advises Rutherford on all hockey-related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. During the summer of 2015, Botterill played a leading role in hiring Mike Sullivan as head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League. Following a hot start to the season with WB/S, Sullivan was eventually promoted to Pittsburgh and helped guide the Penguins to the Stanley Cup victory. In addition to his duties in Pittsburgh, Botterill serves as the GM of WB/S, which has made the playoffs all seven years he has overseen the team, including back-to-back berths in the Eastern Conference Final in 2013 and ‘14. Prior to his promotion, Botterill spent the previous five years as the Penguins assistant GM from 2009-14, and the two years prior to that as the team’s director of hockey administration beginning in 2007-08 where he was a key architect of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team. Botterill was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the first round (20th overall) in 1994 NHL Draft and played in 88 NHL games for Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo before his career was cut short due to injury. He also suited up for 393 career minor-league games in the American and International Hockey Leagues, tallying 257 career points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four years of college hockey at the University of Michigan and helped lead the Wolverines to an NCAA title in 1996. Botterill represented Canada in three straight World Junior Championships from 1994-96, winning gold medals all three years. Following his playing career, he received his MBA from his alma mater, the University of Michigan.

Bill Guerin capped his second season as the Penguins assistant general manager by earning the first Stanley Cup championship of his executive career in 2015-16. Guerin’s responsibilities as assistant general manager include serving as a liaison between the players and management. Guerin was Pittsburgh’s player development coach from 2011-14, where he was instrumental in helping develop the Penguins’ minor league, junior and college prospects, including Tom Kuhnhackl, Bryan Rust and Conor Sheary, who all played huge roles in the 2016 championship run. Originally drafted by New Jersey in the first round (5th overall) of the 1989 NHL Draft, Guerin won two Stanley Cups (Pittsburgh, 2009; New Jersey, 1995) and spent 18 seasons in the NHL — including his final two with the Penguins. Guerin’s leadership and on-ice performance after being acquired at the NHL trade deadline was a key in Pittsburgh’s ’09 title. Guerin, a four-time NHL All-Star, tallied 429 career goals and 856 points in 1,263 career NHL games, including five 30-goal and two 40-goal seasons. MIKE SULLIVAN Head Coach

Mike Sullivan led the Penguins to one of the greatest in-season turnarounds in franchise history during his first year as head coach in 2015-16, a journey that resulted in a Stanley Cup victory against the San Jose Sharks on June 12, 2016. Adhering to Sullivan’s advice to ‘Just Play’, the Penguins ended the regular season with the secondbest record in the Eastern Conference and fourth-best mark in the league, in large part because of a 14-2 run to conclude the regular season. By leading the Penguins to the franchise’s fourth Cup, Sullivan became just the sixth American-born head coach to win the Stanley Cup. Prior to being promoted to Pittsburgh, Sullivan spent the first two-plus months of the 2015-16 season as the head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins. During his 23-game tenure in WB/S, his club went 18-5, which was good enough for first place in the Atlantic Division. Sullivan’s club also had a franchise-best 11-game winning streak. A native of Marshfield, Massachusetts, Sullivan began his coaching career in 2002-03, starting the season as head coach of the AHL’s Providence Bruins before joining the NHL’s Bruins as an assistant coach late in the year. He was promoted to head coach of the NHL Bruins at age 35 in 2003-04, winning a Northeast Division crown in the first of his two years at the helm. Sullivan served as an NHL assistant coach for seven-consecutive years from 2007-14 with Tampa Bay, the NY Rangers and Vancouver. In addition to his professional coaching experience, Sullivan has coached the United States three times internationally, including the 2016 World Cup of Hockey when he was an assistant coach. He was the head coach at the 2007 World Championship and an assistant coach at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turino, Italy. During the 2014-15 season, Sullivan was a member of the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks player development staff. Sullivan’s 11-year NHL career began with the expansion San Jose Sharks in 1991-92 and included stops in Calgary, Boston and Arizona. Sullivan played four years of collegiate hockey at Boston University from 1986-90, serving as the Terriers captain as a senior. Sullivan represented the U.S. as a player at the 1988 World Junior Championship. For full bio, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

RICK TOCCHET Assistant Coach

Rick Tocchet is in his third season as an assistant coach of the Penguins. In his current role, Tocchet works closely with the team’s speedy and dynamic forward group, which had eight players reach double figures in points during the 2016 playoffs, a key reason Pittsburgh was able to win the franchise’s fourth Stanley Cup, the first Cup win of Tocchet’s coaching career. Tocchet was hired as an assistant coach by Tampa Bay in July 2008 and was elevated to interim head coach on Nov. 14 of that year. He was named head coach following the ‘08-09 season, where he remained in that position until 2010. Tocchet began his coaching career as an assistant with the Colorado Avalanche for two years (2002-04) before spending one season (‘05-06) with the Phoenix Coyotes. A veteran of 18 NHL seasons, including parts of three seasons with the Penguins from 1992-94, Tocchet won a Stanley Cup championship with Pittsburgh in 1992. The four-time NHL All-Star (1989, ‘90, ‘91, ‘93) played 1,144 career NHL games and totaled 440 goals, 952 points and 2,972 penalty minutes in his NHL career. Tocchet was originally drafted by Philadelphia in the sixth round (125th overall) of the 1983 NHL Draft.

JACQUES MARTIN Assistant Coach

Jacques Martin stepped back behind the Penguins’ bench for a second tour of duty as an assistant coach in December 2015, playing a crucial role in the team’s Stanley Cup win, the first championship of Martin’s lengthy NHL career. Martin, who enters his fourth season in the Pittsburgh organization, presides over the Penguins’ defensemen and penalty killing unit in his current role. He was instrumental in Kris Letang hitting career highs in all offensive categories in 2015-16. Martin’s PK unit finished with the fifth-best success rate in the NHL. Martin has over 25 years of NHL experience as a general manager, head coach and assistant coach with Pittsburgh, Montreal, Florida, Ottawa, Colorado/Quebec, Chicago and St. Louis. He won 613 games and made 12 playoff appearances in 17 seasons as an NHL head coach. He won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s ‘most outstanding coach’ with Ottawa in 1999 and was a finalist for the award on three other occasions. Martin won gold medals as an assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2002 Olympics and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. He was also an assistant coach on the 2006 Canadian Olympic Team.

MIKE BALES Goaltending Coach Mike Bales has established himself as one of the NHL’s top goaltending coaches during his first three seasons with the team. During the Penguins’ 2016 Stanley Cup championship drive, Pittsburgh used three goaltenders who thrived under his tutelage, including rookie Matt Murray, whose 15 playoff wins equaled the NHL rookie record. Under Bales’ guidance, Marc-Andre Fleury has compiled two of the finest seasons of his career. During the 2014-15 campaign, Fleury established a franchise record with 10 shutouts, a figure that led the entire NHL. Bales began his Penguins’ career as the team’s goaltending development coach from 2011-13. Bales, a native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, spent 18 seasons playing professionally from 1992-2010, including stints in the NHL with Boston and Ottawa. PENGUINS HAPPY TO SUPPORT

YOU CAN PLAY

PROJECT Nicole Jelinek

To support inclusion in hockey, the Pittsburgh Penguins hosted a You Can Play Night on Feb. 7 against Calgary at PPG Paints Arena. The NHL and NHLPA have partnered with the You Can Play advocacy organization to ensure safety and inclusion for all who participate in sports, including LGBTQ athletes, coaches and fans. The league is calling February Hockey is for Everyone month. The campaign includes programs and events designed to highlight a place in hockey for people with disabilities and people from different socio-economic statuses and ethnicities. It also has one player from each team be a LGBTQ-inclusion ambassador. These players are “a leader in the locker room and in the community on diversity, equality and inclusion,” according to an NHL release. Chris Kunitz was named the Penguins’ ambassador and thinks it’s important for the NHL to show they care. “One of the big key points is that they want to have the respect for one and all,” Kunitz said. “There are communities that need people to be role models for them and stand up for a game that we love. “We need to include everyone who supports the game. It doesn’t matter if you are a player or manager, so be it. We want people to be included and be able to enjoy it just like everyone else. “ To show support and welcome those in attendance, a number of Penguins and Flames players used pride tape on their sticks in the pre-game warmup. The sticks were autographed and are currently being auctioned through NHL Auctions, with proceeds benefitting You Can Play. Group tickets were on sale for the LBGTQ community, and tickets from Penguins players and corporate partners were donated to bring LGBTQ youth to the game. The initiative started several months ago and as a result, the You Can Play night came together for February. Chris Bryan, who is Director of Marketing and Development for the Delta Foundation — which produces events and supports projects that help make Pittsburgh a vibrant and exciting city that is attractive to the LGBTQ community — said their organization was excited because they were expecting over 400 people from their community to be there. “Sports are such a big thing for Pittsburgh,” Bryan said. “It is a huge part of the fabric here in town. I think that when the sports organizations embrace communities it is an important part of their outreach to people. The LGBTQ community loves its sports just like everyone else. They go to games and they are fans. To be able to go as one group and into a safe space and be treated with dignity and respect is a big deal.” Bryan saw a lot of positive reaction from the community on their Facebook event for the game, and said that people loved seeing the rainbow tape on the players’ sticks during warmups. “It shows that the entire team is welcoming and happy that the community is there,” he said. You Can Play was founded in 2012 by the NHL’s Patrick Burke, son of Calgary Flames president of hockey operations Brian Burke. Patrick’s brother, Brendan, came out as gay in 2009. Brendan died, tragically, in an auto accident several months later, and You Can Play was founded in his honor. The Burke connection is the reason the Penguins chose the game vs. Calgary as their You Can Play Night. “If you can play, you can play,” Bryan said. “I think that, especially for younger kids who may be struggling with their sexuality, it’s important that they know that they can grow up to be a Penguins hockey player if they want and play for the team, or even to play for a football team. They can be anything they really want to be. Nothing has to stand in their way of being successful, being loved and treated with dignity and respect.” 66

PENGUINS ELITE GIRLS ON THE

ROAD TO SUCCESS

Over the past few years, women’s ice hockey has skyrocketed. The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite Hockey Program accurately illustrates this growth through the success of its female athletes. In 2015, three Pittsburgh Penguins Elite female players graduated high school with commitments to play Division I college hockey: Rachel Khalouf (University of Vermont), Caitlyn Radatovich (University of New Hampshire), and Reagan Rust (Rochester Institute of Technology). Previous Penguins Elite players Pippy Gerace (Cornell University) and MacKenzie Lancaster (Quinnipiac University) also began their Division I college hockey careers in 2015. During the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite U19 Girls 2014-15 season, Reagan Rust recorded 38 points in 55 games: 23 goals and 15 assists. Her youth hockey career finished, but her success did not. As a freshman at the Rochester Institute of Technology in the 2015-16 season, Rust finished third on her team in scoring with 18 points: five goals and 13 assists; she also had two power play goals and blocked 49 shots. She was named RIT Female Athlete of the Week and CHA Rookie of the Month in November of 2015, as well as CHA Rookie of the Week twice during the season. Rust says that playing college hockey is “a lot different than she thought it would be with juggling school, work and hockey. It’s the moments like getting a big win or a teammate getting their first goal that are really something special.” The growth of the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite Girls Hockey Program continues as the U16 Girls are currently ranked sixth in the nation. The team already has seven Division 1 commits: Lauren Bernard (Clarkson University), Chayla Edwards (University of Wisconsin), Mary Katherine Gialames (Mercyhurst University), Eleri MacKay (Colgate University), Laini MacKay (Colgate University), Kaitlyn O’Donohoe (Colgate University), and Gwyneth Philips (Northeastern University). Pittsburgh Penguins Elite expects this progress to continue throughout the next few years as the girls hockey program strengthens. 70

Penguins Profile:

IAN COLE

Mark Madden

Sometimes grit and courage have to be their own reward. Such was the case on Feb. 5, when the host Penguins lost in a shootout to Calgary, 3-2. Defenseman Ian Cole and forwards Nick Bonino and Tom Kuhnhackl displayed the aforementioned qualities in triplicate, blocking several shots en route to killing a 4-on-3 power play in overtime. But Calgary nonetheless got the extra point as the Flames’ Kris Versteeg netted the shootout’s only goal. “It was a great PK,” Cole said afterward. “We did a lot of good things. Anytime you can kill off a 4-on-3, it’s a good situation for your team. We’d have liked to win the game. But getting a point after being down 2-0 is good.” Improving on the penalty-kill is better yet. The Penguins’ PK came out of that loss to Calgary ranked just 22nd in the NHL with a success rate of 79.3 percent. But the Penguins held the Flames scoreless on four power plays, including that kill in OT. In the prior game, the Penguins negated both St. Louis PPs in a 4-1 road victory on Feb. 4. “As of late we’ve done a real good job,” said Cole, an integral part of the Penguins’ shorthanded unit. “On the PK, each read that’s made by each player individually is so important. If one guy reads one thing different than another guy, there’s a seam, and everything kind of falls apart after that. “So, make sure everyone is on the same page. Make sure those reads are all in unison. It’s something we’ve gotten a lot better at. Hopefully we can put up some goose eggs down the stretch, and go into the playoffs clicking.” A healthy defensive corps would help, too. When Kris Letang returned from a lower-body injury Jan. 31 for the Penguins’ 4-2 home win over Nashville, the Penguins had all six of their top defensemen in the lineup. They immediately went on a 3-0-1 run. Cole sees the value of continuity on the blue line. “I can only speak for myself and playing with a guy like [Justin Schultz], but it’s good to build that chemistry and talk about plays — and like I said about the PK, making sure that the reads are the same and you’re doing that in unison. You can really play some solid defensive hockey doing that. “Any time you’re rotating or switching partners, it’s a little bit tough because guys read things different.” continued on page 79

Statistically, the Cole-Schultz defense tandem is one of the NHL’s best: As of Feb. 8, Schultz was fifth in the NHL with a plus-29 mark, while Cole ranked 13th at plus-21. “I don’t think we want to be known as a quote-unquote ‘third pair’ or ‘five-six’,” Cole said. Schultz approaches the game with finesse. Cole provides a bit more edge. Perhaps that’s why they’re such a good defensive pair. Cole’s toughness was certainly on display during that 4-on-3 PK vs. Calgary. Cole did all he could to clog the Flames’ passing and shooting lanes. Filling the latter was more painful, as he ate a few shots — three blocks on the night. “Thankfully, they all hit me in pretty good spots,” Cole said. “It wasn’t too terrible. [Calgary’s] Dougie Hamilton doesn’t exactly have a [Montreal’s] Shea Weber-type shot, which is good.” Coach Mike Sullivan lionized Cole, Bonino and Kuhnhackl for their work on that 4-on-3 overtime kill. “I thought those three guys were terrific,” Sullivan said. “It’s a huge kill for us. It gives us a chance to score in the last minute [of OT], or get to a shootout. “It takes a lot of courage. You have to block shots, because it’s hard to be aggressive. That’s one of the reasons those guys are on the ice. They have good awareness, good sticks and they’re brave.” Cole, 27, had three goals and 15 assists in the Penguins’ first 52 games. The 6-foot-1, 219-pound defenseman played college hockey at Notre Dame. Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

TRAILER ARRIVAL

KICKS OFF BUILD UP TO STADIUM SERIES Sam Kasan The National Hockey League and the Pittsburgh Penguins officially "kicked off" the countdown to the 2017 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series between the Penguins and intrastate rival Philadelphia Flyers at Heinz Field, home of the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers, on Monday with the arrival of the Ice Plant. "When they bring the ice trucks in, that's when everybody gets really excited about it and it becomes real," Penguins COO Travis Williams said. "We've been planning this for quite some time. A lot of planning is in place but it becomes real when you move the ice trucks and see the deck being put down. That's really exciting for us." The 53-foot, 300-ton trailer, the world's largest mobile refrigeration unit, houses state-of-the-art ice-making and ice-monitoring equipment used to create NHL-caliber ice for the game, which will take place on Feb. 25. The trailer arrived Sunday night from Toronto, but the crew began working on laying the groundwork for the rink on Monday, Feb. 13. continued on page 93

2011 NHL Winter Classic Heinz Field continued from page 91

"The setup has gone really well so far," said Dan Craig, the NHL's VP of facilities operations/hockey operations. "We are already down to the field with all the piping. Being here before really helped us on the original setup. We're in good shape." 'Before' would be the 2011 NHL Winter Classic, which was also held at Heinz Field, between the Penguins and Washington Capitals. Although Craig and his crew know what to expect from the venue, they still have to be prepared for whatever Mother Nature has intended for them for this year's Stadium Series. "I have to be aware four-five days out exactly what's happening (weatherwise) so the engineers on the truck can be ready for whichever comes through," Craig said. Craig's crew, which numbers over 200 people, consists mostly of local people in Pittsburgh, and they do the bulk of their work at twilight to get the ice ready for the big game. "We have a lot of local people here from the Penguins, from the building working with us, local crew, local pipefitters, local carpenters," Craig said. "You can tell when you walk onto the site the pride in this city. It's fantastic. continued on page 95

"When the sun is out it makes no sense for us to try to work. So when the sun goes down we'll work all night. The most challenging [aspect] is getting sleep." The Penguins plan on leaving the ice up following the Penguins-Flyers game to allow local amateur hockey games and college games to be played at the field, something that couldn't be done in the previous Winter Classic because the Steelers needed the field for the NFL postseason. Robert Morris University will host Niagara for a college hockey classic on the ice. Even though it will be a unique experience, Craig and his crew view this as another important game during a grueling 82-game schedule. "These aren't exhibition games. There are points on the table," Craig said. "This is late in the season and every point counts. We never lose “When the sun focus of that." is out it makes That being said, there is a novelty to the game and the no sense for us experience. And Williams is to try to work. So hoping for a magical evening when the sun goes visual with some help from down we’ll work the elements. "What I've seen is 40s and all night. The most 30s (degrees) during the course challenging [aspect] of the day and light flurries in is getting sleep the evening," he said. "It would ~ Dan Craig be kind of nice to have a little bit of snow falling from the sky for that game."

In 2015, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and the Allegheny Intermediate Unit introduced the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation (PFF) STEAM Lending Library to schools districts in Allegheny County. This oneof-a-kind, first in the nation, program has given students the opportunity to explore technology that they may have never had access to otherwise. Stressing the importance of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math) learning in the region, the Library gives teachers the opportunity to borrow technology to use in their classrooms. The PPF STEAM Lending Library contains nearly 1,000 items, and to date, has impacted educators from 40 schools districts in Allegheny County.

Entering its third year, Tablets in Education has provided elementary students in 11 counties the opportunity to enhance their education through technology. Since its inception in 2014, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation has donated over 3,900 Kindle Fire tablets to over 200 school districts and special needs programs in the region; impacting over 100,000 students. Along with the support from the Allegheny Intermediate Unit, Tablets in Education continues to change the way students in our region learn. MIKE LANGE Penguins Radio Network Play-by-Play Announcer

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 42nd season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

PHIL BOURQUE Penguins Radio Network Color Analyst

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 14th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey. 111

HOCKEY ETIQUETTE 101 Our goal? To create an awesome game experience for all fans! Help make that happen by remembering the following: 1.

DO NOT ENTER OR EXIT THE SEATING AREA DURING PLAY! Hockey is fast — and goals can be missed in an instant. Fans moving through rows and up aisles can block the view of an entire seating area. Wait until the whistle blows to make your move. HINT #1: The red light above the penalty boxes is lit for TV timeouts. TV timeouts occur at the first whistle stops inside the 14:00, 10:00, and 6:00 minute mark of each period, EXCEPT following an icing call or goal. When the light comes on, this is your chance to make a dash to the restroom or your seats! HINT #2: The concourse TVs feature a countdown clock during the intermissions. Smart, huh? Thank the season ticket holders for recommending this awesome idea!

118

2.

NO LEANING! We know you are into the game, but leaning creates a ripple effect, affecting the view of the fans in the rows behind you. Sit back so all can enjoy the game!

3.

Keep your eyes on the puck! Pucks can hurt when they enter the seating area!

4.

PPG Paints Arena is a non-smoking facility; smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, is prohibited.

5.

It’s hard to like fans of the opposing team, we get it. However, we think it is pretty cool that they chose to come to our building. Be aware of children sitting around you and let the guys on the ice do the talking!

6.

Cheer, clap and let the players know you are here! Hockey is the best sport to watch live — have fun!

Since 2012, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered to build a total of 12 dek hockey rinks for local communities through their unique Project Power Play program. Project Power Play is a $2.3 million initiative that was designed to build one dozen dek rinks in Pittsburgh and the surrounding communities over a four-year period. To support the program, Highmark provided $1.5 million in funding. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation also provided funding for the project. The City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and surrounding communities provided the land as well as maintenance services, lighting and additional support. The rinks are multi-purpose courts and are suitable for hockey and other sports; including, soccer and lacrosse. All rink sites were chosen based on a community’s need for this type of facility and a local commitment to develop youth programming. Citiparks and local athletic associations continue to program the rinks, with the assistance from the Penguins organization.

IT ISN’T

ALWAYS EASY

Mike Prisuta

As the hockey world celebrates the 40th anniversary of “Slap Shot” — Feb. 25, 1977 was the original release date — the Penguins continue to focus on how they aspire to play the game. Opponents periodically have a different idea in mind. No one has thrown a Clarence “Screaming Buffalo” Swamptown, an Andre “Poodle” Lussier or an “Ogie” Ogilthorpe at the Penguins just yet. But there have been teams, and there will continue to be teams, that believe physicality is the key to slowing the Penguins down, to knocking the defending-Stanley Cup champions off their game and off their throne. The Penguins intend to continue responding to such an approach just as they have been ever since Mike Sullivan took over as head coach in December of 2015. “We’re not going to retaliate, that’s not the answer,” Sullivan maintained. “The answer is to play hard. “Listen, physicality is part of the game. Some teams are going to try to bang us and we’ve been through that in the past, we understand it and we know how to play against it. The most important thing is that it doesn’t deter us from playing the game that we need to play in order to have success.” That can lead to the Penguins being out-hit on a given night. But that’s not the statistic that ultimately makes the difference in Sullivan’s estimation. “I don’t think it’s any secret that we’re a team that wants to skate, that wants to play a speed game, that wants to play a game with the puck,” he emphasized. “Usually, when you have the puck more than your opponent you’re probably going to get hit more than they are. But that’s the game that we want to play. That’s the game that we think gives us the best chance to win. “We have to make sure we don’t get deterred and get caught up in playing somebody else’s game. “We’re going to play our game.” The success the Penguins had playing it last season provided the positive reinforcement necessary to keep everyone on board with maintaining such an approach throughout this season. It isn’t always easy. continued on page 167

But nobody ever said winning a Stanley Cup wouldn’t require a certain amount of sacrifice. “There are some plays out on the ice where you want to respond right away, you deem it as another team taking liberties,” defenseman Ian Cole explained. “Other times, there’s hard hockey. As much as you don’t want to see a player get hit, ever, at all, on your team, sometimes there are plays where a guy has to take a hit to make a play. “As defensemen, we go back there and try to make guys commit to us, take hits to make plays. It’s a game where there is hitting and there’s going to be hitting both ways and teams are going to try to hit us. We just have to continue to play through it and play our team game right through all that physicality. “You saw how successful that is when we did it in the playoffs last year.” That won’t necessarily earn the Penguins a reputation equivalent to being known as the “toughest team in the Federal League.” But being celebrated at the end of the season as the best team in the National Hockey League, as the one that was tough enough to finish a season by skating around the ice with the Cup, is more than enough. “It’s all kind of instinctive,” captain Sidney Crosby said. “You have to know the score. You have to understand the team you’re playing against and what they’re trying to do, it’s a fine line. We’ve done a pretty good job of kind of managing things that way. “Our game is a speed game. It’s finishing hits when you have the chance but not necessarily going out of our way [to create contact]. Teams are going to try to slow us down and be physical and that’s fine. Sidney We’ll stick up for each other when we CROSBY need to and try to play our game and stick to it when the time comes for that, too.” 167

PENGUINS GET INTO

GOLD STADIUM SERIES THREADS nhl.com

The Pittsburgh Penguins are looking forward to their golden opportunity. On Feb. 1, forward Bryan Rust became the first player to model the full Pittsburgh gold uniform for the 2017 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series. The primary color is Pittsburgh gold, and the traditional skating penguin is the crest. The sleeves have black stripes, and a patch that says “City of Champions” is on the left sleeve, with four gold stars above it to represent Pittsburgh’s four Stanley Cup championships. “I love the color,” Rust told the Penguins website. “I think I like the bright yellow helmets the most. It’s something different. . . something you don’t see too often.” The Penguins goaltenders are also getting into the spirit. Matt Murray and Marc-Andre Fleury each gave a sneak peek of their masks for the game. Murray’s mask is black with yellow highlights and features a silhouette of the Pittsburgh skyline, as well as snowflakes made of gold glitter. Fleury’s mask features the skating Penguins logo as well as images of some of his teammates, including forwards Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Chris Kunitz. Fleury will wear yellow goalie pads with black trim; Murray has opted for an allblack setup. The Penguins face-off against the Philadelphia Flyers at Heinz Field on Feb. 25 during the 2017 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series.

PENGUINS IN THE CLASSROOM …

TEACHING STEAM!

Chartiers Valley Middle School

Chartiers Valley Middle School’s STEAM classroom kicked off the school year with the Penguin’s Future Goals — Hockey Scholar program for a unit on how math intersects with the real world. Students greatly enjoyed the interactive simulations and game-like environment in which these lessons are taught. One student said, “I enjoy math. I enjoy hockey. It’s nice to see them used together in real life!” Many of the students are avid Penguins fans and this program has built off of that passion to make learning fun. Teachers enjoy the fact that lessons can be self-paced, allowing students who are advanced to go at a faster pace and students who need more time to move without being rushed. The review exams at the end of each section also give students immediate feedback on their learning progress. “I love how Future Goals makes real life connections to show us how math is used in real life settings all over the world,” said another STEAM class student. Hockey Scholar is a digital resource that provides students an opportunity to experience different aspects of hockey while immersing themselves in problem solving situations involving engineering, math and science. If you’re a 5th-8th grade teacher, learn how to bring Future Goals to your classroom by visiting futuregoals.nhl.com/penguins!

“I WISH

IT WAS THAT EASY” Jason Seidling It’s no secret that one of the keys to the Penguins’ success over the past 14 months has been their ability to outskate and then outscore teams. Despite the NHL being a copycat league, at this juncture in the season, even after watching the Penguins ride a speed game all the way to a Stanley Cup victory, most teams simply cannot keep up with Pittsburgh’s speed. But with the stretch drive of the season coming quickly, the injury bug wiped away several of the Penguins’ fastest skaters. Heading into a Valentine’s Day date with the Vancouver Canucks, the Penguins were minus the services of forwards Carl Hagelin, Conor Sheary and Bryan Rust. When Rust went down in Colorado on February 9, management realized the need to recall somebody with wheels from the team’s minor-league affiliate. Enter Josh Archibald. Besides upping his offensive totals for a third-straight year with WilkesBarre/Scranton, Archibald has some of the fastest skating legs in the organization, making him the perfect fill-in. Not even a two-hour car ride from Wilkes-Barre to Philadelphia, followed by a five-hour plane ride to Arizona, could slow Archibald down in his second career NHL game on February 11.

Archibald quickly opened the scoring against the Coyotes, lifting a backhand bar down behind Mike Smith to give Pittsburgh an early advantage. The goal came on Archibald’s first NHL shot. Much later in the game, the Penguins found themselves both down by two goals and on a penalty kill. That’s when Archibald struck again. Smith was attempting to stickhandle Nick Bonino’s dump-in, when the ‘Yotes netminder mishandled the rubber. Archibald stole the puck and tossed it into the empty cage, setting the stage for Phil Kessel to tie the contest in the waning seconds to earn the Penguins a point. “We were told before the game to pressure [Smith], sometimes he will cough the puck up,” Archibald described. “I guess I put too much pressure on him and he gave the puck to me.” While both goals were scored from about a combined six feet away, Archibald made sure reporters knew after it wasn’t as easy as it looked. “I wish it was that easy,” Archibald said. “Playing with Kuni (Kuhnhackl) and Fehrsie [Eric Fehr], they made it easy for me. “It’s a great feeling [getting his first goals]. I wish we could have come out on top.” Head coach Mike Sullivan, who hates losing more than probably, well, anyone, certainly wanted the extra standings point as well, but he agreed that Archibald helped immensely replacing all the speed that had vacated the lineup. “He scored two goals and brought us some energy,” Sullivan said. “You could see how much of an influence his skating has. He chases pucks down and is in on the forecheck. He can fly. He can really scoot out there. “And good for him to score two goals.”

DADS’ TRIP

ALWAYS A HIGHLIGHT Michelle Crechiolo Matt Cullen’s teammates lovingly call the 40-year-old “Dad.” But recently, that term was reserved for the players’ actual fathers, who were with the Penguins on their annual Dads’ Trip. “It’s nice not being the oldest guy in this room,” Cullen laughed before they left. “I feel like a spring chicken here. This is awesome.” The dads were with their sons for the team’s road trip through Colorado and Arizona, following them through every step of the trip — from breakfast, to the bus, to practice, to team meetings, on the plane and watching the games from a suite. It gave them a chance to Terry and Matt see what their kids go through on a daily basis at this level. “From start to finish, getting to meet new dads and spending time with Eric, I look forward to absolutely everything,” Frank Fehr

said. “It’s always a highlight to be treated very well. Never a shortage of food. So it’s awesome.” While there’s plenty of Dads’ Trip veterans — like Fehr, Troy Crosby, Terry Cullen and Phil Kessel Sr. — there were also those fathers of Erik and Frank young players who made the trip for the first time. Matt Murray, who was in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton at this time last year, was particularly excited to have his dad Jim around. It’s not an easy trip to Pittsburgh from Thunder Bay, Ontario, so Jim isn’t able to make it to many games. “He hasn’t been able to come see me much since I’ve been playing in the U.S.,” Matt said. “So the fact that now he’s now able to see what we actually go through on a daily basis, getting to come on the plane and come to practice and seeing the dressing room and everything, it’s really cool. He hasn’t been able to see much of that.” That’s even more amplified for the European players, whose fathers have an even more difficult time traveling overseas to visit. They mostly have to rely on FaceTime or Skype to keep in touch with their families back home. But three of them — Gosta Hornqvist, Jari Maatta and German hockey legend Erich Kuhnhackl — were able to make the trek over to join their sons for this road trip. “I think it’s pretty awesome for him to see what it is like to be here,” Olli

said. “It’s kind of a different world than it is back home. I think it’s a way to say thank you, too, for all of the work and stuff he did while I was growing up to be able to play hockey.” It’s surreal, because at this point last year, some of the young guys hadn’t even been called up to the NHL yet. Now, they are Stanley Cup champions. “As Matt likes to say, it was surreal,” Jim said. “That’s one of his favorite words. I don’t think it’s sunk in for him yet either because he’s so young. But when [Evgeni] Malkin charged the pile and knocked him down, it was like ‘oh, there’s Matt, there’s my son.’ That was really quite amazing.” That applies to the dads whose sons were traded to Pittsburgh last year as well, like Steve Bonino and Glenn Schultz. “I wanted to pen a letter to the Vancouver Canucks and thank them for trading him for the Penguins,” Steve joked. “But you’re sitting there and really, it was surreal. Because we’ve been doing this since he was five-years-old and it was just kind of the cumulation of everything.” It was endearing to hear the fathers’ experiences of watching their sons win the Stanley Cup last season. Both Jim Murray and Glenn Schultz are oftentimes too nervous to stay in their seats during games, both preferring to walk the concourse. But that night, Glenn was able to stay seated and watch everything unfold. “I was very proud. It was very nerve-racking,” Glenn said. “We went to Pittsburgh for Game Five, and I sat for one period and I was pacing around the whole rink the rest of the time. But then we went to San Jose after they won, and that was the first time I ever sat in my seat the whole game. I didn’t move. My wife and other son were like, ‘you never do that!’ And they won and it was just unbelievable. It was surreal being there and going on the ice.” Meanwhile, Steve and his wife Joanne were quite animated as that game went on. “When ‘Horny’ got that third goal and it was “I think it’s 3-1, I jumped up and was like, ‘We got the Cup! And Joanne was like, ‘Not yet! We’ve got 30 a way to say seconds to go! Shut up!’” Steve laughed. “And thank you, too, I was like ‘okay.’ And we were just sitting there for all of the and I had to take Joanne off the ceiling fan work and stuff after they won (laughs). “To actually get there, you dream of it, you he did while I want it but you don’t really talk about it. It’s was growing just something you hope happens, and it up to be able happened. I never had any idea we would get to play hockey.” here. Nick did, though. He knew that, I think, ~ Olli Maatta growing up. That was his desire and he did it.” 191

Heads UP Pittsburgh is a first of its kind program that has served as a blueprint for other NHL and professional organizations since its creation in 2010. In partnership with UPMC Sports Medicine and funded by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, the program has helped reduce the amount of concussions in youth sports by providing free baseline concussion testing to young athletes.

Since 2011, the Heads UP Pittsburgh has had great results in the youth sports community. n Over 125,000 individual players, coaches, and parents have been impacted by the free baseline testing and educational programs n Athletes in 30+ sports have been tested through funding from the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation n Over 12,000 conditioning aids, including flexibility kits, neck strengthening kits, and core strength balance discs have been distributed
