The Series vs. Islanders On March 24, the Penguins host the New York Islanders to start a three-game homestand. It’s the fourth and final meeting of the regular season between the teams, with Pittsburgh winning two of the previous three. Here on Oct. 27, Phil Kessel had a goal and two assists as the Penguins scored three times in the third period for a 4-2 victory. In Brooklyn on Nov. 18, Pittsburgh earned a 3-2 OT victory on Kris Letang’s goal, and the Islanders claimed a 5-3 home victory on Nov. 30 with the help of Anders Lee’s tie-breaking goal with 27 seconds left. . . The Penguins have won five of the last seven games between the teams and three straight here in Pittsburgh, where they’re also 5-1-1 in their last seven. . . Sidney Crosby has more points against the Islanders (100) than any other team. continued on page 6

The Series vs. Flyers On March 26, the Penguins face the Philadelphia Flyers for the fourth and final time this regular season. The Penguins have won two of the three previous games. The first of those was a 5-4 road victory Oct. 29 in which Evgeni Malkin scored twice, including the game-winner in the third period. Here in Pittsburgh on Feb. 25, the Penguins earned a 4-2 victory in the NHL Stadium Series at Heinz Field with the help of two Jake Guentzel assists. March 15 in Philadelphia, Steve Mason made 23 saves in a 4-0 Flyersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; win that saw Sean Couturier and Dale Weise each have a goal and an assist. . . Pittsburgh has won three straight home games against Philadelphia after losing 11 of the previous 13. . . Crosby has more goals against the Flyers (36) than any other team.

On March 29, the Chicago Blackhawks make their lone Pittsburgh appearance of the regular season. The Hawks won the only previous game between the teams this season, 4-1, in Chicago on March 1 as Scott Darling made 36 saves and Patrick Kane scored his first three goals ever against Pittsburgh. . . The Penguins have lost five straight games to Chicago since a 4-1 home win on March 30, 2014. Chicago has won eight of the last 10 games between the teams. . . Pittsburgh has not lost six straight games to the Hawks since Nov. 9, 1989 through March 23, 1991.

The Penguins The Penguins were hoping to continue regaining their health in late March, as they were playing with as many as seven regulars out for much of the early portions of the month. Among those injured when Pittsburgh won consecutive home games March 17â&#x20AC;&#x201C;19 against New Jersey (6-4) and Florida (4-0) were Malkin, Letang, Bryan Rust, Olli Maatta, Trevor Daley, Ron Hainsey and Carl Hagelin. . . Crosby recorded his 10th career hat trick in the win over the Panthers, giving him a league-leading 40 goals. . . Marc-Andre Fleury made 21 saves for his 44th career shutout in the win over the Panthers. . . Carter Rowney scored his first NHL goal, the game-winner, in the win over the Devils. . . The Penguins were hoping to clinch their 11th straight playoff berth, tying the team record for consecutive seasons in the playoffs, at Buffalo on March 21. They played in Ottawa on March 23 before returning home. 8

With whom do you attend Penguins home games? The person sitting next to me at each game is determined based on the opponent. I like to get the right person in the seat to bring the appropriate amount of energy for the game. All of that said, this only occurs if my wife cannot attend with me.

Penguins Season Ticket Holder

What is your earliest memory of Penguins hockey? While there may be an earlier memory, the most vibrant one is watching the 1988-89 team play the Flyers in the playoffs. What motivated you to become a season ticket holder? If you looked at the account, Sidney Crosby would be the obvious answer. While the decision to become a season ticket holder did finalize the day the Penguins won the draft lottery, that was only the culmination of many things. I had just reached a place where I had the disposable income and a group of die-hard Penguinsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; fans to join with me.

Aside from on-ice action, what do you enjoy most about attending Penguins games? We really enjoy the pre-game video, but that pales in comparison to our enjoyment of Jeff Jimerson. We greatly appreciate that he understands the anthem must be sung well, but it is only an intro to the event everyone is there to see. He shows it the respect it deserves and does not add any grandeur to bring the spotlight to himself. What lesser known Penguins player (past or present) has left a lasting impression on you? What did he do to make that impression? Defining lesser known is tough. Does Robbie Brown, his impressive stats on limited skill, awesome off-ice reputation or hairline, count as lesser known? continued on page 15

He still holds a special place in Penguins’ lore for me. How about Max Talbot? He played the game hard and was a favorite of mine before his 2009 Cup run heroics. If these do not qualify, then it must be Shawn McEachern. The spunky winger didn’t amount to much in a Penguins’ sweater, but he played hard, fast and could shoot on the rush. What has been your favorite off-ice Penguins event to attend and why? While not an event, it is always great to see the guys out in the community running normal errands and the people of Pittsburgh respecting them. I make it a point to not seek them out, but if we just happen to pass each other I always make sure to wish them luck, but not to stop them. What is your favorite memory from the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoff run? Our favorite memory is the hopeful intensity with which we watched the games, whether from a hotel bar because of work travel, in the arena, or most importantly at home with our friends. As the team progressed through the playoffs it only brought our community of friends closer together. In your eyes, what makes the Pittsburgh Penguins, or hockey in general, great? Hockey is a uniquely swift game, played within very rigid boundaries. Playing that game to win, playing it to score more than the opposition is what is most exciting. The Penguins have always excelled when the true spirit of hockey is embraced: skate harder and faster than the competition and score more than your opponent. 15

Columbus clinched their third playoff berth in its 17-year history with a 4-1 win at New Jersey on March 19, a victory that elevated the Blue Jackets to 100 points in a season for the first time in franchise history and extended the franchise record for wins in a season (47-18-6). The triumph in New Jersey included Columbus becoming the third team in NHL history to score two goals on penalty shots in a game (Vancouver, Feb. 11, 1982 at Detroit; and San Jose, Dec. 30, 2009, against Washington). The Blackhawks became the first team in the Western Conference to clinch a postseason berth with a 6-3 victory over Colorado on March 19. Chicago’s five unanswered goals in the third period included three in a span of 34 seconds, the third-fastest three-goal eruption in franchise history (21 seconds on March 23, 1952 at the Rangers, and 30 seconds on Oct. 15, 1983 at the Maple Leafs). C Jonathan Towes had a pair of goals against the Avalanche and reached the 20-goal plateau for the 10th consecutive season. He’s the sixth player in Blackhawks history to score 20 goals in 10 or more seasons (Stan Mikita, 14; Bobby Hull, 13; Steve Larmer, 11; Denis Savard, 10; and Patrick Kane, 10). Savard, Kane and Towes are the only players in Blackhawks history to score 20 goals in each of their first 10 NHL seasons. G Scott Darling extended his winning streak to six consecutive games (1.51 goals-against average, .951 save percentage).

MARIO LEMIEUX Co-Owner/Chairman

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in the National Hockey League, added a new line to his Hall of Fame career last season: Two-time champion owner. The Penguins claimed the Cup for the second time since Lemieux and partner Ron Burkle bought the team out of bankruptcy in 1999. It gave him four Stanley Cups overall, including two as a player in 1991 and 1992. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice – including 10 straight playoff appearances and four conference final appearances in the past nine seasons, in addition to the two Cups. The Penguins entered the 2016-17 season having sold out every game for nineplus seasons while setting new standards for television ratings, corporate sales and social media. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open the arena in August, 2010. The facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. RON BURKLE Co-Owner

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing, technology and distribution industries, is in his 18th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports, leading the team to Stanley Cup championships in 2009 and 2016. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. PPG Paints Arena is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh, including NCAA basketball and hockey. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for nine-plus seasons and consistently ranked among the most fan-friendly and community-minded teams in the NHL and all of pro sports. The Penguins have earned 10 straight playoff berths and reached the conference finals four times in the past nine years, in addition to the two Stanley Cups. The team’s solid foundation of ownership has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign many of the team’s core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award. David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Stanley Cupchampion Penguins, overseeing all aspects of the team’s operation. The Penguins have become one of the NHL’s strongest business entities during his tenure — selling out every game for nine-plus seasons, setting new standards for television ratings and corporate sales and increasing their focus on innovative youth marketing. Morehouse joined the team as consultant on the new arena project in 2004 and was named team president in April 2007. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer just as the new arena was opening in August 2010. Under his leadership, the Penguins have reshaped their strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, community interaction, corporate outreach and cutting-edge technology, while maintaining a high level of performance on the ice. A strong commitment to fan outreach includes an annual event where players personally deliver season tickets to fans’ homes and a special preseason game were all 18,000 tickets are distributed free to local youth. Morehouse also was a driving force behind the new UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, which opened in August 2015. It is the first facility to combine hockey with a world-class medical center and sports performance complex. Morehouse joined the Penguins following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill — as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. JIM RUTHERFORD Executive Vice President & General Manager

Jim Rutherford enters his third year as Penguins executive vice president and general manager fresh off the greatest season of his managerial career. During the course of the 2015-16 campaign, Rutherford transformed the Penguins into Stanley Cup champions, thanks in large part to his acquisitions of Phil Kessel, Nick Bonino, Trevor Daley and Carl Hagelin, plus the promotion of Mike Sullivan to head coach in December of 2015. When the Penguins defeated the San Jose Sharks to win the franchise’s fourth Stanley Cup on June 12, 2016, Rutherford became the first GM in the post-1967 Expansion Era to manage multiple teams to Cup victories, having also done so with Carolina in 2006. As a reward for quick, on-the-fly re-shaping of the Penguins’ roster, Rutherford won the NHL General Manager of the Year Award for his work in ’15-16. Rutherford spent the previous 20 years as GM of the Carolina Hurricanes/ Hartford Whalers franchise from 1994-2014, where he was a key architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team. In addition to his general manager duties, he also served 20 years as president of Carolina/Hartford, taking the post in 1994. In his role as president/GM, Rutherford oversaw operations on both the hockey and business sides of the organization. Over the course of his executive career, Rutherford has won multiple awards, including The Hockey News‘ Executive of the Year in 2002 and ’06. Additionally, he was voted by his NHL general management peers as Sporting News ‘Executive of the Year’ in 2006. Before his 22 years in the NHL, Rutherford was recognized as the 1987 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Executive of the Year, and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Executive of the Year in back-to-back years with the Windsor Spitfires in 1987 and ’88. He oversaw a Spitfires team that won the OHL championship in 1988 and earned a berth in the Memorial Cup. Rutherford played 13 years as a goaltender in the NHL, appearing in 457 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit. JASON BOTTERILL Associate General Manager

Jason Botterill enters this third season as associate general manager having assisted GM Jim Rutherford in making numerous personnel moves over the last year that resulted in the Penguins winning the Stanley Cup in 2016, the second championship Botterill has helped build during his tenure in Pittsburgh. As associate GM, Botterill advises Rutherford on all hockey-related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. During the summer of 2015, Botterill played a leading role in hiring Mike Sullivan as head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League. Following a hot start to the season with WB/S, Sullivan was eventually promoted to Pittsburgh and helped guide the Penguins to the Stanley Cup victory. In addition to his duties in Pittsburgh, Botterill serves as the GM of WB/S, which has made the playoffs all seven years he has overseen the team, including back-to-back berths in the Eastern Conference Final in 2013 and ‘14. Prior to his promotion, Botterill spent the previous five years as the Penguins assistant GM from 2009-14, and the two years prior to that as the team’s director of hockey administration beginning in 2007-08 where he was a key architect of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team. Botterill was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the first round (20th overall) in 1994 NHL Draft and played in 88 NHL games for Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo before his career was cut short due to injury. He also suited up for 393 career minor-league games in the American and International Hockey Leagues, tallying 257 career points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four years of college hockey at the University of Michigan and helped lead the Wolverines to an NCAA title in 1996. Botterill represented Canada in three straight World Junior Championships from 1994-96, winning gold medals all three years. Following his playing career, he received his MBA from his alma mater, the University of Michigan.

BILL GUERIN Assistant General Manager

Bill Guerin capped his second season as the Penguins assistant general manager by earning the first Stanley Cup championship of his executive career in 2015-16. Guerin’s responsibilities as assistant general manager include serving as a liaison between the players and management. Guerin was Pittsburgh’s player development coach from 2011-14, where he was instrumental in helping develop the Penguins’ minor league, junior and college prospects, including Tom Kuhnhackl, Bryan Rust and Conor Sheary, who all played huge roles in the 2016 championship run. Originally drafted by New Jersey in the first round (5th overall) of the 1989 NHL Draft, Guerin won two Stanley Cups (Pittsburgh, 2009; New Jersey, 1995) and spent 18 seasons in the NHL — including his final two with the Penguins. Guerin’s leadership and on-ice performance after being acquired at the NHL trade deadline was a key in Pittsburgh’s ’09 title. Guerin, a four-time NHL All-Star, tallied 429 career goals and 856 points in 1,263 career NHL games, including five 30-goal and two 40-goal seasons. He was elected to the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 2013.

JASON KARMANOS Vice President Of Hockey Operations

Jason Karmanos begins his third season as the Penguins vice president of hockey operations having won the Stanley Cup for the second time in his executive career, after originally winning a championship with Carolina in 2006. Karmanos assists GM Jim Rutherford in all aspects of hockey operations as one of the leaders in the Penguins’ implementation of advance statistics and analysis. Before joining Pittsburgh, Karmanos spent 15 years as an executive for the Carolina Hurricanes from 1998-2013, serving various roles with Carolina, including executive director of hockey operations and vice president/assistant general manager under Rutherford. Karmanos played four years of college hockey at Harvard University from 1992-96, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors. In 1994, Karmanos represented Team USA at the World Junior Championships, compiling three points (1G-2A) in seven games. After graduating, Karmanos attended training camp with the Penguins in 1996 and played pro hockey for two seasons before his career was cut short due to an eye injury.

MIKE SULLIVAN Head Coach

Mike Sullivan led the Penguins to one of the greatest in-season turnarounds in franchise history during his first year as head coach in 2015-16, a journey that resulted in a Stanley Cup victory against the San Jose Sharks on June 12, 2016. Adhering to Sullivan’s advice to ‘Just Play’, the Penguins ended the regular season with the secondbest record in the Eastern Conference and fourth-best mark in the league, in large part because of a 14-2 run to conclude the regular season. By leading the Penguins to the franchise’s fourth Cup, Sullivan became just the sixth American-born head coach to win the Stanley Cup. Prior to being promoted to Pittsburgh, Sullivan spent the first two-plus months of the 2015-16 season as the head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins. During his 23-game tenure in WB/S, his club went 18-5, which was good enough for first place in the Atlantic Division. Sullivan’s club also had a franchise-best 11-game winning streak. A native of Marshfield, Massachusetts, Sullivan began his coaching career in 2002-03, starting the season as head coach of the AHL’s Providence Bruins before joining the NHL’s Bruins as an assistant coach late in the year. He was promoted to head coach of the NHL Bruins at age 35 in 2003-04, winning a Northeast Division crown in the first of his two years at the helm. Sullivan served as an NHL assistant coach for seven-consecutive years from 2007-14 with Tampa Bay, the NY Rangers and Vancouver. In addition to his professional coaching experience, Sullivan has coached the United States three times internationally, including the 2016 World Cup of Hockey when he was an assistant coach. He was the head coach at the 2007 World Championship and an assistant coach at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turino, Italy. During the 2014-15 season, Sullivan was a member of the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks player development staff. Sullivan’s 11-year NHL career began with the expansion San Jose Sharks in 1991-92 and included stops in Calgary, Boston and Arizona. Sullivan played four years of collegiate hockey at Boston University from 1986-90, serving as the Terriers captain as a senior. RICK TOCCHET Assistant Coach

Rick Tocchet is in his third season as an assistant coach of the Penguins. In his current role, Tocchet works closely with the team’s speedy and dynamic forward group, which had eight players reach double figures in points during the 2016 playoffs, a key reason Pittsburgh was able to win the franchise’s fourth Stanley Cup, the first Cup win of Tocchet’s coaching career. Tocchet was hired as an assistant coach by Tampa Bay in July 2008 and was elevated to interim head coach on Nov. 14 of that year. He was named head coach following the ‘08-09 season, where he remained in that position until 2010. Tocchet began his coaching career as an assistant with the Colorado Avalanche for two years (2002-04) before spending one season (‘05-06) with the Phoenix Coyotes. A veteran of 18 NHL seasons, including parts of three seasons with the Penguins from 1992-94, Tocchet won a Stanley Cup championship with Pittsburgh in 1992. The four-time NHL All-Star (1989, ‘90, ‘91, ‘93) played 1,144 career NHL games and totaled 440 goals, 952 points and 2,972 penalty minutes in his NHL career. Tocchet was originally drafted by Philadelphia in the sixth round (125th overall) of the 1983 NHL Draft.

JACQUES MARTIN Assistant Coach

Jacques Martin stepped back behind the Penguins’ bench for a second tour of duty as an assistant coach in December 2015, playing a crucial role in the team’s Stanley Cup win, the first championship of Martin’s lengthy NHL career. Martin, who enters his fourth season in the Pittsburgh organization, presides over the Penguins’ defensemen and penalty killing unit in his current role. He was instrumental in Kris Letang hitting career highs in all offensive categories in 2015-16. Martin’s PK unit finished with the fifth-best success rate in the NHL. Martin has over 25 years of NHL experience as a general manager, head coach and assistant coach with Pittsburgh, Montreal, Florida, Ottawa, Colorado/Quebec, Chicago and St. Louis. He won 613 games and made 12 playoff appearances in 17 seasons as an NHL head coach. He won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s ‘most outstanding coach’ with Ottawa in 1999 and was a finalist for the award on three other occasions. Martin won gold medals as an assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2002 Olympics and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. He was also an assistant coach on the 2006 Canadian Olympic Team.

MIKE BALES Goaltending Coach Mike Bales has established himself as one of the NHL’s top goaltending coaches during his first three seasons with the team. During the Penguins’ 2016 Stanley Cup championship drive, Pittsburgh used three goaltenders who thrived under his tutelage, including rookie Matt Murray, whose 15 playoff wins equaled the NHL rookie record. Under Bales’ guidance, Marc-Andre Fleury has compiled two of the finest seasons of his career. During the 2014-15 campaign, Fleury established a franchise record with 10 shutouts, a figure that led the entire NHL. Bales began his Penguins’ career as the team’s goaltending development coach from 2011-13. Bales, a native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, spent 18 seasons playing professionally from 1992-2010, including stints in the NHL with Boston and Ottawa. Bales also saw action with teams in the AHL, IHL, Germany, Sweden and Northern Ireland. He was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the fifth round (105th overall) of the 1990 NHL Draft. Before turning pro, Bales played three collegiate seasons with Ohio State University of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) from 1989-92. TRAVIS WILLIAMS Chief Operating Officer Travis Williams is in his ninth season as a senior executive with the Penguins, currently serving as Chief Operating Officer and overseeing finance, legal affairs, technology, business development and arena operations. He also assists CEO David Morehouse in the day-to-day management of the business. In addition, Williams serves as the Penguins’ point man on the development of the former Civic Arena site and oversaw the construction of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry. Williams joined the Penguins in 2008 as Senior Vice President of Business Affairs/ General Counsel. One of his first responsibilities was to guide the construction and development of the new arena — bringing the project to completion on time and under budget. He now serves as the team’s liaison with building manager AEG Facilities, working closely with AEG on all arena-related events, including major concerts and national-level sporting events. Previously, Williams had been a partner at Reed Smith LLP, where he specialized in mergers and acquisitions, investment management, commercial lending and general corporate matters. Terry Kalna is in his second season as senior vice president of sales and broadcasting following an 18-year career in motorsports management. Jim Rutherford swung a trio of deals in the final week heading into the March 1 trade deadline to bolster his club on the back end. With all due respect to Ron Hainsey, Mark Streit and Frank Corrado, who have all helped stabilize an injury-ravaged defensive core, none were involved in Rutherford’s best transaction. That’s because Rutherford’s best move was his decision to hang on to veteran goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury despite speculation that had Fleury ending his 13-year run in black-and-gold. Think about it for a minute. How many other NHL teams would kill to have what some would label a “No. 2” netminder that has gone 12-3-3 since Dec. 1, and, thanks to his 4-0 blanking of the Florida Panthers on March 19, ranked 15th in NHL history with 375 career wins. Don’t worry, head coach Mike Sullivan put the Penguins’ goaltending situation into proper perspective after that win. “We’re so happy for him,” Sullivan stated in his post-game press conference. “He is such a good person and a great pro and teammate. “It’s is something that a lot of teams are envious of, because we have two high-quality goaltenders (in Fleury and Matt Murray). It makes for difficult decisions for the coaching staff.” continued on page 66

By now we all know how difficult choosing a goaltender has been on most nights for Sullivan and his staff this season. Yet the old adage, you can never have enough quality goaltending, probably still sticks in the minds of Penguins fans after last year. Just in case you have forgot in the exciting blur that has been the past 365 days, when Fleury suffered a concussion that ended his regular season on March 31 of last year, he had just won his 35th game of the season, and he was in the midst of an 8-1 run while starting nine of the previous 11 games. His loss was compounded when his backup, Murray, sustained a concussion of his own in the season-finale in Philadelphia, requiring the services of seldom-used third-stringer Jeff Zatkoff for the first two games of the Rangers series. Sure, situations like that don’t happen often, but why take a risk when you don’t have to? Murray has been injured twice this season, and Fleury has been superb in his stead, earning NHL ‘Third Star’ of the week honors when Murray was sidelined in late December. Fleury proved the value of having a pair of No. 1 caliber options then, and should a scenario arise where he again has to take over the reigns again, I don’t think anybody doubts that he’ll do so successfully, especially with his renewed sense of confidence. “It’s been more relaxing,” Fleury said of remaining in Pittsburgh. “The couple of weeks prior to the deadline were a little stressful. . . I’m glad I can focus on the last stretch of the season.”

PIHL PLAYERS OF THE MONTH

FOR FEBRUARY

The Pittsburgh Penguins have a longstanding tradition of honoring high school hockey players from the PIHL (Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League) with Player of the Month awards. The recipients of the awards demonstrate key attributes to help determine team success. The Players of the Month for February of 2017 are no different as each player helped lead their teams into the PIHL playoffs. The Penguins and the PIHL are pleased to congratulate these players. Senior forward, Dawson Richard, of the North Allegheny Tigers put up an impressive stat line in the month of February. Richards tallied 10 points (3+7) in three games, including back-to-back four point performances to end the season. The North Allegheny skater finished atop the league in scoring for the season with 39 points in 19 games played (15+24). Maxim Clouser led the way for Mt. Lebanon by posting a 3-0-1 record between the pipes in February. The senior goalie registered a .940 save percentage (SV%) and a 0.60 goals against average (GAA) rattling off three straight wins. In 14 games Clouser recorded 10 wins including a seven game win streak. He finished the season with a .901 SV% and a 2.55 GAA. Ethan Boyer, a senior forward from Indiana, contributed to his teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s success by registering five goals and seven assists in February. In a total of four February games, Boyer helped Indiana achieve a 2-2 record by posting two multi-point performances including a seven point performance where he registered three goals and four assists. Boyer finished the season with 43 points in 17 games played. Cameron Drake is a senior forward for Central Valley and led his team to an impressive 3-0-0 record in the month of February. Drake was on fire registering 15 points in only three games. The Central Valley skater tallied nine goals in the month including both a three and four goal performance. Drake ended the month recording two four point performances and a seven point performance. Drake finished his season with 67 points in 20 games. 70

Jake Guentzel is in his first full pro season, but he’s established his versatility. He’s gone up and down the Penguins’ depth chart during his time in Pittsburgh, and moved smoothly between left wing and right wing. But in mid-March, Guentzel appeared to have found his niche. It may change by the time you read this. Coach Mike Sullivan was frequently shuffling his deck as the regular season approached its stretch run, and as injuries dictate — perhaps as much as ever before with this year’s Penguins. But the line of Guentzel on left wing, Sidney Crosby at center and Conor Sheary on right wing showed spark and delivered results, notably in the Penguins’ 3-0 win March 11 at Vancouver. That trio totaled 21 shots in that victory, including the game’s final two goals. Guentzel netted his 10th goal of the season at the 16:54 mark, 76

converting a backdoor pass from Sheary, who dashed behind the net on his forehand before dishing a pass back to the left post for Guentzel to finish. “It was a great play,” Guentzel said. “[Sheary] used his speed to get around the defenseman, and made a great play to me on the back door. It was pretty easy for me to put it in there.” Nothing comes very easy in the NHL. But the 5-foot-11, 180-pound Guentzel is fulfilling his pedigree and then some. Guentzel, 22, played college hockey at Nebraska-Omaha. He was a third-round pick (77th overall) in the 2013 NHL draft. continued on page 79

After 33 games, Guentzel had 11 goals and 11 assists for the Penguins. He also had 21 goals and 21 helpers in 33 games with the Penguins’ WilkesBarre/Scranton farm club. Guentzel remained the leading goal-scorer among NHL rookies for two months after he was summoned to Pittsburgh. Radio analyst Phil Bourque felt that Guentzel’s goal at Vancouver typified his play: “He was able to anticipate Sheary going around the net and throwing the puck short side. It was a perfect example of his hockey IQ. His smarts.” Guentzel spoke effusively about skating with Crosby and Sheary: “We all like to play quick down low. Give-and-gos. When we get on their defensemen and make it tough for them to make plays, that’s when we’re at our best. “It’s been awesome. You can tell everyone’s starting to get a little more comfortable with each other.” Twenty-one shots between Crosby (nine), Sheary (eight) and Guentzel (four) made things uncomfortable for Vancouver goalie Ryan Miller on March 11, but the veteran netminder sparkled and held the Penguins to a 1-0 lead until Guentzel scored with 3:06 remaining in the third period. “He played a great game,” Guentzel said of Miller. “Sometimes you run into a hot goalie like that. But we were fortunate to get a few. “When you’re getting chances, it’s obviously a good thing. We had a couple chances we needed to bear down on, but we were getting the chances.” Count Bourque among those who believe Crosby, Sheary and Guentzel can continue to produce, including in the playoffs. “I’m glad Mike Sullivan put those guys together,” Bourque said. “We’ve seen that Sheary and Crosby work well together. But Guentzel, the way he thinks the game, he can make the give-and-go play, which Sid loves. “[Guentzel] is responsible defensively. His speed is outstanding. His quickness is outstanding. I like his courage, how he takes pucks to the net. “I don’t think he’s overwhelmed skating with Sid. He and Sheary got over that quickly. Like, ‘OK, this is Sidney Crosby.
