PIHL KICKS OFF SEASON AT UPMC LEMIEUX SPORTS COMPLEX By Ashley Roseman and Heather Schrecengost

Monday, October 6th at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex was filled with excitement and anticipation as it kicked off the PIHL season. The PIHL consists of over 150 teams from more than 60 schools. Levels range from middle school to high school varsity, who all compete for their championship title. The four teams selected to open their seasons at the new facility felt the pressure to live up to the hype created by the arena — and they delivered. The Mars Planets took on the North Hills Indians and defeated them 9-0 while the North Allegheny Tigers beat the Pine-Richland Rams by a close score of 4-2. Noah Raymundo led the way for Mars accumulating a total of five points with four goals and one assist. Raymundo’s first goal of the game was just 1:18 into the first period, setting the tone for their 9-0 victory. Mars’ defense put up a strong fight by not allowing North Hills to score on its four power plays. North Hills’ goalie, Kaden Mahsoob, was kept busy throughout the game with an impressive 48 saves, but was not enough to evade the goal-hungry Planets. North Allegheny, the defending AAA Champions, pulled out a 4-2 victory despite being down 2-0 in the first period. It took a team effort for the Tigers, with four goals coming from three different players, and four assists from four players. This match-up got rowdy with 11 penalties accumulating to 22 minutes. Both goalies finished strong each with a 0.9 save percentage. North Hills will have the opportunity for a rematch against Mars on Monday, January 18th at the RMU Island Sports Complex while North Allegheny will try and go 2-0 against the Pine Richland Rams on December 14th at the Baierl Complex. PENGUINS PROFILE

CHRIS

KUNITZ By: Mark Madden

28

Chris Kunitz slumped at the end of last season, scoring just twice in his last 33 regular-season games. But Kunitz knows how to fix it. “I’ve tried to work on getting back to those goal-scoring areas — getting back to the front of the net,” said the 36-year-old left wing. “I haven’t ever gotten too many pretty goals, so I don’t plan on doing it moving forward. “But when you’re around the net, things go off you, and go in. You’ve got to have a quick stick, and a lightning-quick response to those rebounds.” For Kunitz, it’s got to be all about “quick.” He opened the season playing with two of hockey’s quickest: center Sidney Crosby and right wing Phil Kessel. Kessel joined the Penguins in a blockbuster trade with Toronto on July 1. Kessel tallied 25 times last season, and has scored 30 or more goals five times during his nine NHL seasons. He also netted 20 goals in 48 games during the lockout-shortened 2012-13 season. Kessel can skate, and he can score. Kunitz is exceedingly familiar with Crosby, having frequently played on the captain’s line since joining the Penguins in 2009. “The first couple of exhibition games, we had chemistry,” said Kunitz of his linemates. “We just kind of rolled right into it. “The past couple of games and practices, we’ve been working on more things. Obviously, those guys have elite speed and skill. I just have to get back to the basics of how I play: Get on the forecheck, and find that puck. Get to the right areas of the ice, and get that chemistry going in the right directions.” The Penguins scored just one goal while losing their first two games. Kunitz was held pointless, but Kessel scored Oct. 10 in a 2-1 defeat at Phoenix. That line generated chances and showed promise. Kessel is primarily a finisher. Crosby is renowned for his playmaking. That gives Kunitz a very specific set of duties. “Trying to get in on that forecheck. Trying to get back on the backcheck,” Kunitz said. “Making sure you’re creating space for them. “It’s something I’ve been able to do during my career. But it’s something you’ve got to go out and prove every single night.” For Kunitz, it’s all about hard work on the wall, and in front of the net. “I pride myself on my work in those areas of the ice,” said the 6-foot, 195-pounder. “It doesn’t really matter who I’m playing with. continued on page 31

29

continued from page 29

But it’s something I really need to focus on this year. As soon as you get those guys the puck, get off that wall and get back toward the net. Create that space.” Kunitz broke into the NHL with Anaheim during the 2003-04 season. He’s older and wiser, but his preparation is pretty much the same. “Maybe you have to rest a little more than in years past,” Kunitz said. “But other than that, not much has changed. “Make yourself quick and make yourself explosive. A lot of it is based on trying to keep that quickness. Trying to keep those first couple of steps.” The Penguins’ roster changed considerably during the offseason. Kunitz is excited by the addition of Kessel. “Everybody knows he’s got that world-class speed and shot,” Kunitz said. “But he’s also a guy who competes hard on the puck. He plays with a bit of edge and emotion. He’s come in and he’s worked well with everybody.” Kunitz is entering his eighth season with the Penguins. The Penguins acquired the Saskatchewan native from Anaheim on Feb. 26, 2009. Less than four months later, he was skating around Detroit’s Joe Louis Arena with the Stanley Cup. But another meaningful event allows Kunitz to remember his arrival in Pittsburgh. His first child, son Zachary, was born April 15, 2009 — on the morning of the Penguins’ first playoff game that spring. Kunitz played, and the Penguins beat Philadelphia, 4-1. “It definitely doesn’t feel like [my eighth season],” Kunitz said. “But every day, I look at my son, and it reminds me of the first year I got here.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, has been co-owner of the Penguins since 1999. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including nine straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past eight years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open CONSOL Energy Center in August, 2010. The facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. The Penguins ownership group, local labor organizations and members of the Pittsburgh business community honored Lemieux in 2012 with a statue to commemorate his career and contributions to the city and the region. Appropriately named “Le Magnifique,” the statue, by nationally-acclaimed sculptor Bruce Wolfe, can be seen outside the Trib Total Media gate at CONSOL Energy Center. RON BURKLE CO-OWNER

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in technology, retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, has been co-owner of the Penguins for 16 years. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they became one of the most outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. The Penguins reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009 and won the Cup in ‘09. The team’s ownership has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign many of the team’s young core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year — leading to nine straight playoff berths, and three appearances in the conference finals in the past eight years. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award. DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT

David Morehouse is chief executive officer and president of the Penguins, overseeing all aspects of the team’s operation. The Penguins have become one of the NHL’s strongest business entities during his tenure — selling out every game for eight-plus seasons, setting new standards for corporate sales and television ratings and increasing their focus on innovative youth marketing. Morehouse joined the team as a consultant on the arena project in 2004 and was named team president in April 2007. He was given the additional responsibilities of chief executive officer in August 2010. Under his leadership, the Penguins have reshaped their strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, community interaction, corporate outreach and cutting-edge technology. Beyond that, the Penguins have led all U.S.-based NHL teams in local television ratings for six-straight seasons and rank among the league leaders in social media followers, website traffic and merchandise sales. A strong commitment to fan outreach includes an annual event where players personally deliver season tickets to fans’ homes and a special preseason game were all 18,000 tickets are distributed free to local youth. Morehouse also was a driving force behind the new UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, which opened in August. It is the first facility to combine hockey with a world-class medical center and sports performance complex. Morehouse joined the Penguins following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill — as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

JIM RUTHERFORD

EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT & GENERAL MANAGER

Jim Rutherford is in his second season as executive vice president and general manager of the Penguins. During his first year, the Penguins qualified for their ninth-consecutive postseason berth despite playing a majority of the final two months without arguably the team’s top-three defensemen. Rutherford spent the previous 20 years as GM of the Carolina Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers franchise from 1994-2014 where he was a key architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team. In addition to his general manager duties, he also served 20 years as president of Carolina/Hartford, taking the post in 1994. In his role as president/GM, Rutherford oversaw operations on both the hockey and business sides of the organization. He helped spearhead the efforts to bring the 2004 NHL Draft and 2011 NHL All-Star Game to Raleigh. Over the course of his executive career, Rutherford has won multiple awards, including The Hockey News‘ Executive of the Year in 2002 and ’06. Additionally, he was voted by his NHL general management peers as Sporting News Executive of the Year in 2006. Before his 21 years in the NHL, Rutherford was recognized as the 1987 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Executive of the Year, and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Executive of the Year in back-to-back years with the Windsor Spitfires in 1987 and ’88. He oversaw a Spitfires team that won the OHL championship in 1988 and earned a berth in the Memorial Cup. In addition to his time with Hartford/Carolina, Rutherford also spent over 30 years working with Compuware Sports Corporation, overseeing the purchase of Windsor in 1984 and bringing the first American-based OHL franchise to Detroit in 1989. Rutherford played 13 years as a goaltender in the NHL, appearing in 457 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit. Whether it’s listening in on Coach Mike Johnston’s pregame speech, hearing mic’d up Penguins players talking on the bench or traveling to Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, with Sidney Crosby as he trains for the upcoming season, In The Room delivers unique, unprecedented coverage of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The show has won back-to-back Emmy Awards as the best sports series in the Mid-Atlantic region in both 2014 and 2015. “The idea of doing our own show developed because of the success of HBO’s 24/7 Road to the Winter Classic in 2010-11,” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse. “We got a lot of positive feedback from our fans about the unbelievable access to players and coaches. With In The Room, we can continue to show fans a side of the team they’ve never seen before.”

The first episode of the 2015.16 season is

A STORY OF HOPE:

ERIC DENISON One morning two years ago, Eric Denison’s day began like any other. But while shaving, he noticed a lump on his neck. His family doctor monitored it for a month before referring him to an ear, nose, and throat specialist. Three biopsies later, Eric learned he had cancer. “I had squamous cell carcinoma on the base of my tongue,” he says. “The tumor started in my throat but spread to my lymph nodes, and I was diagnosed with stage 4A cancer.” Robert Ferris, MD, a head and neck surgeon at UPMC Presbyterian, removed Eric’s tumor using minimally invasive robotic-assisted surgery. Six weeks after his surgery, Eric began radiation and chemotherapy. He remembers feeling very nervous and apprehensive before he started treatment, but his worries were quickly put to rest. “I walked in for my first radiation appointment and right there, there was an employee from UPMC to meet me and say, ‘Eric, we’re going to take care of you.’ That totally made me feel at ease,” he says. “My radiation oncologist, Dr. Brian Karlovits, was always very honest with me. He told me I’d go through hell and back and that I may want to quit treatment at times. He was right. But he was incredible. I was very pleased with the whole team at UPMC.” James Ohr, DO, Eric’s medical oncologist, also was an integral part of the care team. “He was very personable, he listened, and he answered all of my questions in a very straightforward way,” Eric says. After six weeks of treatment and an additional two weeks spent waiting for the swelling to subside, Eric returned for a PET scan to find out if any traces of the cancer remained — and he got great news. “The scan came back clean, and here we are more than a year later. I am still clean with no signs of cancer at all,” Eric says. His experiences have made him want to give back and help those who are going through similar experiences. “Going forward, I am going to volunteer even more and hopefully get more involved with cancer survivors,” said Eric.

PLAYERS GIVE LUCKY SEASON TICKET HOLDERS

A TOUR TO REMEMBER By Michelle Crechiolo

When Jeremy and Jennifer Evans came to CONSOL Energy Center with their sons Cameron and Connor to pick up their season tickets last month, they were shocked to see Marc-Andre Fleury sitting behind the security desk at the arena’s administrative entrance. Jeremy and Jennifer watched as Cameron and his three-year-old brother excitedly surrounded the Penguins goaltender, who asked them a series of questions about themselves. That was just the start of the family’s memorable tour throughout the arena, as another star Penguins player was waiting just a few feet away at the elevators. Phil Kessel escorted them upstairs to where Kris Letang was sitting at a reception desk. After chatting with the family for a few minutes, head coach Mike Johnston came to lead them down the hallway to the locker room. And there, they found Sidney Crosby sitting in his stall awaiting their arrival next to a jersey with the family’s last name stitched on the back. After presenting the family with their signed sweater, Crosby took the family for a tour of the facilities. After that, the visit concluded and the Evans family left for home with endless memories. They were the first of five season-ticket holder groups to visit the arena and get a similar tour from Crosby, Letang, Kessel, and Fleury, while other players went out on the usual deliveries to season-ticket holders’ homes that the team does every year. “It’s a good change,” Fleury said. “I think when people get a call, they expect us to bring their tickets. So I think to come to the rink, it’s just something new. Keep them on their toes.” Season-ticket holder Lindie Droulia certainly appreciated the switch. “I want to thank the Penguins organization for their creativity and doing something that was just such an amazing experience for all of us,” she said.

THE RUSH Introduced in the mid 1990’s, the Pittsburgh Penguins Student Rush Program is one of the most popular and well known marketing initiatives of the team. Designed to sell remaining game day inventory, the Student Rush program provides the Pittsburgh Penguins an opportunity to introduce new fans to the game of hockey at a discounted rate. HOCKEY

ETIQUETTE 101 Our goal? To create an awesome game experience for all fans! Help make that happen by remembering the following: 1.

DO NOT ENTER OR EXIT THE SEATING AREA DURING PLAY! Hockey is fast — and goals can be missed in an instant. Fans moving through rows and up aisles can block the view of an entire seating area. Wait until the whistle blows to make your move. HINT #1: The red light above the penalty boxes is lit for TV timeouts. TV timeouts occur at the first whistle stops inside the 14:00, 10:00, and 6:00 minute mark of each period, EXCEPT following an icing call or goal. When the light comes on, this is your chance to make a dash to the restroom or your seats!

T:8.5”

B:8.75”

S:7.5”

HINT #2: The concourse TVs now feature a countdown clock during the intermissions, smart huh? Thank the season ticket holders for recommending this awesome idea! 2.

NO LEANING! We know you are into the game, but leaning creates a ripple effect, affecting the view of the fans in the rows behind you. Sit back so all can enjoy the game!

3.

KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE PUCK! Pucks can hurt when they enter the seating area!

4.

CONSOL Energy Center is a non-smoking facility; smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, is prohibited.

5.

It’s hard to like fans of the opposing team, we get it. However, we think it is pretty cool that they chose to come to our building. Be aware of children sitting around you and let the guys on the ice do the talking!

6.

Cheer, clap and let the players know you are here! Hockey is the best sport to watch live — have fun!

MIKE LANGE

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 41th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

Heads UP Pittsburgh is a first of its kind program that has served as the blueprint for other NHL and professional sports organizations since KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE its creation in 2010. Heads UP Pittsburgh is a partnership with UPMC Sports Medicine and funded by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. The purpose of the program is to reduce the amount of concussions in youth sports by providing free baseline concussion testing to young athletes, developing educational initiatives for athletes, parents, coaches, officials, teachers and pediatricians and finally support research projects. The results are quite impressive, since 2011 the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine have been able to: Baseline tests over 17,000 athletes, ages seven to 14 in 30 different sports Our staffs have educated over 45,000 people about concussions and sports related injuries 50,000 educational brochures were distributed at baseline test sites, pediatrician offices, schools and local rinks The Foundation funded over 4,000 neck strengthening kits with protocols to develop neck strength in young players From the neck strengthening program 500+ athletes became involved in a concussion research project Addressing other sport injuries the Foundation provided 3,000 free Duraband flexibility kits Next year we will introduce a new pediatric version of the baseline test targeted at seven to nine year-old players. Through your support of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation events we continue to grow our programs dealing with physical well-being for the young people of our region. BONINO ADJUSTING TO PITTSBURGH By: Joseph Guzy

Drafted by the San Jose Sharks in 2007, traded to the Anaheim Ducks in 2009, then traded to the Vancouver Canucks in 2014, Nick Bonino is certainly no stranger to aquatic life. Now he begins the 2015-16 season as a member of the Penguins. The 27-year-old forward was acquired from the Vancouver Canucks via trade on July 28. The past few seasons have kept Bonino on the move with two trades in two years, but the transition to Pittsburgh hasn’t been a difficult one. “It’s just been really good,” Bonino said. “I think when you come to a team with a lot of great players like this, it’s a little intimidating. You don’t know where you’ll fit in. The organization has been very welcoming to my wife and me. No complaints. Happy to be here.” It’s not just the organization that has impressed Bonino. Spending most of his playing career on the West Coast, life in Pittsburgh took him and his wife, Lauren, by surprise. “We didn’t know too much about Pittsburgh before we got traded here,” said Bonino, a native of Hartford, Connecticut. “I think it’s much nicer than people give it credit for. It’s definitely got a good food scene now — some good restaurants downtown that we’ve eaten at.” continued on page 131

Something I wanted to focus on was becoming more dependable at even strength and being able to contribute at even strength. Nick Bonino

Those who follow Bonino on social media know there’s another family member that had to make the move as well: their miniature Australian Shepherd, Kali. “She’s liking it so far,” Bonino said. “She’s doing a little bit of daycare over in Wexford. We just bring her over there to get a little exercise and socialize with other dogs.” While Kali is getting used to a new system, Bonino is doing the same. “[Head coach Mike Johnston] doesn’t play much different than I think a lot of coaches play,” Bonino said. “If the puck is turned over you always want to come back harder and I think that’s the staple of a lot of teams’ games. I don’t think they’re reinventing the wheel or anything. I think it’s just play hard and play simple. That’s something I can definitely do.” Bonino, who is comfortable at either center or wing, can do a lot more than play hard and play simple. He can score. The forward is coming off of two fabulous seasons. He set career highs during the 2013-14 season with 22 goals and 49 points in 77 games. He followed up that performance with 15 goals and 39 points in 75 games in the 2014-15 season. The small drop in production isn’t a big concern for him. “Last year, numbers were down just because the the powerplay points weren’t there,” Bonino said. “But last year, I got a lot better at even strength. “That’s something I wanted to focus on was becoming more dependable at even strength and being able to contribute at even strength.” continued on page 132

Whether it’s at even strength, on the power play or killing penalties, Bonino wants to contribute. “I’d like a reputation that I can be in every situation on the ice,” Bonino said. “I killed penalties a lot in Vancouver. I killed penalties a lot in Anaheim. I blocked a lot of shots the past two or three years. “I find it fun to [be on the penalty] kill. It’s kind of a chess match out there. You have to out-think and beat them. It’s definitely a challenge.” Johnston would also like to see Bonino continue his penaltykilling chess matches with the Penguins. “Bonino had a great reputation as a [penalty] killer last year in Vancouver,” Johnston said. “Through his career he’s been a good power-play guy, but also a very good [penalty] killer. A lot of people underestimate how good of a [penalty] killer he is.” With the departure of a few key penalty killers in the offseason, Bonino’s resume certainly makes him a top candidate. Still, he’s not going to get ahead of himself. “I think there’s been a lot of talk about PK jobs that are open,” Bonino said. “I’m not sure who in this room killed last year. I’m sure every guy is able and knows the game the pretty well, and all the skilled guys have played on the power play long enough to know what makes a penalty kill successful.”

As he stood on the event level at Budweiser Gardens talking to media members on the morning of September 13, Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford made the following statement: “I like what I’ve seen thus far from this rookie tournament. I count at least six players who have the chance to help us out at some point this season.” Then, Rutherford began rattling off the names, the last of which surprised those he was standing with: “[Daniel] Sprong.” Hearing the name of the Penguins’ 18-year-old second-round (46th overall) pick from this past June’s NHL Draft certainly provided shock value for those in the conversation. In a span of 28 days in July, Rutherford re-made Pittsburgh’s supporting cast up front, acquiring the likes of Phil Kessel, Nick Bonino, Eric Fehr, Matt Cullen and Sergei Plotnikov. When all was said and done, the Penguins had 11 forwards coming to training camp on one-way contracts, not including the injured Fehr. Where was there room for a junior-eligible player like Sprong, who either had to make the NHL Penguins, or be returned to his junior club, the Charlottetown Islanders of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), due to the fact he is still two years from being old enough to play in the American Hockey League? Rutherford already had that figured out. “If he, or any of these young players, comes to camp and performs, we’ll always make room,” Rutherford said. By the time final cuts needed to be made on Oct. 3, the Penguins found themselves doing just that — making room for the Amsterdam, Netherlands native — as Sprong easily proved to be continued on page 144

one of Pittsburgh’s top-23 players, earning him at minimum a ninegame NHL cameo to begin the season. “It’s a pretty good feeling,” Sprong told reporters in the Penguins’ locker room at CONSOL Energy Center following his first practice after getting the news that he had made the team. “I was pretty happy to get the call and get the good news. But it’s not over yet. I’ve still got to keep earning my spot and keep playing well.” Sprong’s ascent to the Penguins’ lineup began in dramatic fashion in the opening contest of the rookie tournament against the Montreal Canadiens, when his breakaway goal in the 3-on-3 overtime session salvaged a 4-3 Pittsburgh win just minutes after the Penguins gave up a late lead. Sprong finished the tournament leading Pittsburgh with two goals and three points. Impressive as Sprong was in London, he was just heating up. His first NHL exhibition appearance came in the Penguins’ preseason home opener against Carolina on Sept. 22. Sprong picked up right where he left off a week earlier, rifling a shot between the wickets of Hurricanes’ goalie Cam Ward for a firstperiod power-play goal. Eight days later, Sprong put an exclamation point on his scintillating camp performance when he avoided Brendan Smith’s hit at the blue line by dancing around the fifth-year defender, then watching as his pass attempt to Beau Bennett jumped off a stick behind Petr Mrazek for his second preseason goal. From there, the Penguins did exactly what Rutherford foreshadowed weeks earlier, as they made a spot for Sprong. When he dressed for Pittsburgh’s season opener in Dallas, Sprong was one of just six players from the 2015 NHL Draft to make an opening-night roster, with he and Buffalo’s Brendan Guhle the lone second-round selections to make the cut. While we don’t know how long Sprong will stay in Pittsburgh, in a relatively short period he has proved that the Penguins have a homegrown, game-breaking forward in their prospect arsenal.

I was pretty happy to get the call and get the good news. But it’s not over yet. I’ve still got to keep earning my spot and keep playing well. Daniel Sprong

ICEBURGH Iceburgh, the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins, has been entertaining hockey fans worldwide since 1992. As one of the Penguins’ most popular ambassadors, not to mention one of the NHL’s most beloved mascots, you can find Iceburgh leading cheers, beating drums and dancing in the aisles at every Penguins home game, attending major hockey events around the world, visiting local schools, or just spending time at area hospitals and community events. Iceburgh has even been asked to be a guest of honor at numerous wedding celebrations in recent years! There’s no doubt about it, Iceburgh is one busy Penguin! In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture Sudden Death. He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. Last season, during his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game in Columbus, Iceburgh helped the Eastern Conference mascots defeat the Western Conference by scoring two goals and two assists in the first annual NHL Mascot Showdown while also emerging victorious in the mascot dance competition. To request an Iceburgh appearance at your next community or special event, please complete the online request form by visiting pittsburghpenguins. com and selecting “Iceburgh” under the “Fan Zone” section.

THE START OF A NEW SEASON By: Mike Prisuta

With any new season comes a period of adjustment, especially for teams in transition such as the Penguins. They opened on Oct. 8 in Dallas with at least one player on each of their four lines who hadn’t been with the team last season. So there’s that to sort out, among other things, as the 2015-16 regular season gains some steam. INCLUDING: LIFE WITHOUT PASCAL: Winger Pascal Dupuis’ comeback season has been delayed for four-to-five weeks due to a lower-body injury. That absence has affected the Penguins on multiple fronts. “He’s an energy guy,” head coach Mike Johnston observed of Dupuis. “He’s a glue guy in the [locker] room. He’s a very good penalty-killer. He adds some speed to our lineup. “Everybody has to pick up the slack, whether it’s in the room a little bit, some of our new guys starting to get in and provide their stamp on the team, and then it’s on the ice. And a big part of it is on that [third] line with [center Nick] Bonino and then the penaltykilling role.” CATCHING ON WITH KESSEL: Newcomer Phil Kessel opened on one side of Sidney Crosby, with Chris Kunitz on the other, on the top line. “You’ll see them on power plays, as well,” Johnston said. “It probably always takes a couple weeks for a new player to get continued on page 157

ingrained with the team and new linemates, [with] a different style of play, maybe, than he’s used to.” Added Crosby: “It’ll be an adjustment and we’ll talk things out a lot. We’ll be at the point pretty soon where there shouldn’t be too much we have to discuss as far as where guys are going to be, things like that. We should have that down pretty quick, I think.”

SPRONG HAS SPRUNG: Daniel Sprong opened the season with a nine-game window to confirm he had more than just an NHL-ready shot as an 18-year-old, and to establish he’d be able to function in the NHL in the transition game and without the puck well enough that he shouldn’t be sent back to the junior ranks. “I think it’s a much easier transition here than it was in junior,” Sprong insisted. “Our guys are much quicker with the puck, without the puck. You see plays develop much quicker here. “In junior it’s kind of running around, trying to hit the guy, it’s kind of chaos. Here it’s more [about the] system and very technical. For myself, at least, making the jump from the D-zone, I think it’s a much easier transition coming here and learning the system and playing without the puck than playing in junior where guys just run around and there’s no real system at all.” 3-ON-3 IN OT: The NHL’s adaptation of 3-on-3 overtime has thrown a season-opening curveball to every team in the league. “Probably not too many shootouts are going to be coming,” Kunitz predicted. “As long as we keep the puck out [of the continued on page 158

defensive end] and play good zone defense [in the defensive end] and get the puck on our stick we should be able to be successful. “It’s fun when you have the puck. It’s not as much fun when you don’t have the puck because there’s a lot of area to cover. If you get stuck out there on an extended shift or they make a change you’re going to get pretty winded. If you have possession, don’t give it away. It’ll be something we’ll be figuring out as it’s kind of experienced out there.” TWO QBs FOR THE PP: The Penguins featured Crosby on one power-play unit and Evgeni Malkin on another in Dallas and played the two together with a man-advantage on Oct. 10 at Phoenix. “We have that flexibility,” Johnston maintained. “It’s something we’re going to work on throughout the year. We can go to two [power-play] units with Malkin and Crosby on the same one or two units with Malkin and Crosby each quarterbacking each of those units. So that’s the gameplan.” FORGE AN IDENTITY: This season’s system is “pretty similar,” Crosby allowed. But the forwards, in particular, must begin again the process of establishing who they are and how they’ll play. “You have to build that identity,” Crosby said. “Every team kind of has the same goals or wants to play the same way; it’s whoever really does it best and forms an identity. Teams are made up of different players and styles but I think ultimately the same kind of habits and details are important for every team.”

He has become a Pirates fan since coming to North America.

He has incredible size for a forward at 6-foot-7 and 200 pounds. BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Pavlychev cut his hockey teeth in Pennsylvania with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights, a junior team, then in the Atlantic Junior Hockey League, alongside fellow draft pick Daniel Sprong. Pavlychev has committed to play collegiate hockey this season for Penn State University.
