games this season the Rangers had run their record when allowing two or fewer goals to 82-12-4 since the start of the 2013-14 campaign. The Rangers had held opponents at or below that magic number in 98 of their last 170 regularseason games (57.6 percent) through the first six games in 2015-16.
San Jose G Martin Jones compiled a franchise-record shutout streak of 234:33 from Oct. 7 to Oct. 16. Jones gave up a goal on the first shot he faced this season, just 1:49 into the Sharks’ opener at Los Angeles, and didn’t give up another until the third period on Oct. 16 at New Jersey. In between he made 104 consecutive saves. Jones’ effort topped the 178:55 streak Alex Stalock produced in 2014.
COUNTED-UPON KINGS: Los Angeles D Drew Doughty led the NHL in ice time per game at 27:45 through the Kings’ first four games and C Anze Kopitar led the league among forwards in that department (22:27).

Winnipeg’s 18 goals through the first five games led the NHL (3.6 goals per game). The Jets’ success filling the net was led by the top line of C Bryan Little, LW Andrew Ladd and RW Blake Wheeler (seven goals, eight assists, two
game-winning goals and two power-play goals between them). Those three had been Winnipeg’s top three scorers a season ago (Ladd with 62 points, Wheeler with 61 and Little with 52).
MILESTONE FOR VANEK: Minnesota LW Thomas Vanek’s second goal of the season on Oct. 15 at Arizona was the 300th of his NHL career. Vanek had opened the season as one of just three active players to have scored at least 20 goals in his first 10 NHL seasons, along with Jaromir Jagr and Alex Ovechkin.

NOTES By: Bob Grove
THE SERIES [VS] BUFFALO SABRES
Tonight the Penguins meet the Buffalo Sabres, a team against which they have won six straight games. They have never won seven straight against the Sabres. . . The last Buffalo win in the series came here on April 23, 2013 (4-2). During this winning streak, Pittsburgh has outscored the Sabres, 25-3. Three of those six wins came here at CONSOL Energy Center by a combined 12-1 margin. . . Since Thomas Vanek beat Marc-Andre Fleury here on Oct. 5, 2013, the Penguins have scored nine unanswered goals on home ice against Buffalo, leaving the Sabres scoreless in their last 124:54 in Pittsburgh. . . Of course this game also marks the return to Pittsburgh of Buffalo coach Dan Bylsma, who guided the Penguins to the 2009 Stanley Cup. Bylsma was 13-5-0 in 18 games against Buffalo as Pittsburgh’s coach. The last time Bylsma faced the Penguins as an opponent was April. 17, 2006 when he was an assistant coach for the Islanders in their 6-1 lost to the Penguins.. . . The last time these teams met, last April 11 in Buffalo, Brandon Sutter scored twice and Fleury made 28 saves in a 2-0 win that clinched a playoff spot for Pittsburgh. That game also marked continued on page 14

the second time in Penguins’ history — and first in more than 46 years — that they played a game without penalties for either team (March 22, 1969 at St. Louis). . . The Penguins have killed 20 straight penalties against the Sabres since Vanek beat Fleury on Feb. 17, 2013. Pittsburgh has killed 38 of its last 39 penalties against Buffalo, and 47 of its last 49 — with both PPG allowed in that span scored with the Penguins down two men. The last time Buffalo scored a 5-on-4 PPG against Pittsburgh was Feb. 1, 2010, when Jason Pominville beat Fleury. . . Sidney Crosby had points in 20 straight games against Buffalo (10+26) — and in all 15 career games played at Buffalo (9+18) — before being held off the scoresheet there in the final game of last season. . . Pittsburgh has won 24 of its last 32 games against the Sabres; the Penguins won just four of their first 30 games against the Sabres after Buffalo was awarded an expansion franchise in 1970.
THE PENGUINS
Pittsburgh earned home victories over Ottawa (2-0) and Toronto (2-1) to turn around an 0-3 start to the season before finishing a five-game homestand last week with games against Florida and Dallas. Pittsburgh played in Nashville last Saturday and last night in Washington, and tonight’s game marks the first time this season Pittsburgh has played on back-to-back nights. . . 2015 draft pick Daniel Sprong scored his first NHL goal in the win over the Senators on Oct. 15. . . Malkin scored the opening goal in the victories over Ottawa and the Leafs. . . After tonight’s game, the Penguins play in Toronto on Saturday to kick off a four-game road trip that also takes them to Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary next week. Their next home game is Nov. 11 against Montreal, which already owns a 3-2 victory here on Oct. 13. . . Fleury played in his 600th NHL game in the victory over Toronto and started each of the first five games of the season. . . Kris Letang led the Penguins in shots with 19 through the first five games, followed by Phil Kessel (18) and Patric Hornqvist (17). . . Matt Cullen was easily Pittsburgh’s best faceoff man at that point, having won 24 of 41 draws (58.5%). Cullen was also leading Pittsburgh in ice time while short-handed (3:03 per game), a stark contrast from last season in Nashville when he averaged just 48 seconds per game . . . Ian Cole was averaging 22:02 in ice time per game through the first five games after playing just 15:03 last season with the Blues. . . The Penguins began the season 0-for-17 on the power play and were killing penalties at an 83.3 percent clip. Both Crosby (56 seconds per game) and Malkin (1:03) were seeing more time on the PK than usual. . . Sergei Plotnikov earned his first NHL point with an assist on an Olli Maatta goal in the win over the Leafs. . . Defenseman Adam Clendening played his first game with the Penguins in the win over Ottawa, becoming the 12th U.S.-born player to skate for Pittsburgh this season.

SEASON TICKET HOLDER SPOTLIGHT
ANGELO DINARDO WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO PURCHASE PENGUINS SEASON TICKETS? I got hooked on hockey and the Penguins from the time they were awarded the franchise.
Hometown: North Huntingdon, PA Season Ticket Location: 213, E, 3-4 First Season as a
WITH WHOM DO YOU ATTEND Penguins Season PENGUINS HOME GAMES? Ticket Holder: 1976 I currently attend games with my wife, Joyce, but have also gotten my two sons, Chris and Dan, to love the game. Joyce and I would have them sit on our laps during games. They now share their own season tickets in section 213. WHAT LESSER KNOWN PENGUINS PLAYER (PAST OR PRESENT) HAS LEFT A LASTING IMPRESSION ON YOU? WHAT DID HE DO TO MAKE THAT IMPRESSION? This goes back a little, and I don’t know if it’s a lesser known Penguins player, but I will say Jean Pronovost. In the early Penguins days, Joyce and I made a point to visit and talk with the players after all Penguins home games as they came out of the locker room. It was easier to do back then. Though they were all warm and friendly, we developed a special bond with Pronovost and his wife. He gave me one of his hockey sticks during one of the visits. continued on page 20

DO YOU HAVE ANY UNIQUE PRE OR POST-GAME PLAYOFF RITUALS? We don’t do this anymore, but again, during the early days, we got a bed sheet and spray painted it with ‘Go Pens’ and various Mike Lange(isms) and hung it from our bedroom window. Our neighbors thought we were nuts.
Angelo and Joyce posing in front of a Crosby banner.
WHAT PENGUINS-RELATED STORY DO YOU RETELL MOST OFTEN? The day of the NHL Draft lottery when we successfully drafted Sid, my family and I were driving to Myrtle Beach for our vacation. As we were driving, my boys were keeping in touch with friends back in the ‘Burgh getting a blow by blow account of each selection. We anxiously awaited each pick and heaved a sigh of relief each time we were still in the running. Finally, about 65 miles before our destination, it came down to the Penguins and Ducks. You can guess the rest… pandemonium as the Penguins were awarded the first choice and ‘Sid the Kid’ became a Penguin a few weeks later. DO YOU REMEMBER WHERE YOU WERE WHEN THE PENGUINS WON THE CUP IN ‘91, ‘92 OR ‘09? In ‘91 and ‘09, we were in front of our TV in our living room. However, in ‘92, we all were away at a soccer tournament in Slippery Rock and staying in a motel in Butler, PA. Most of the parents pitched in and rented one of their day rooms and set up a TV and watched the easy 8-0 victory over the North Stars together. Great time! IN YOUR EYES, WHAT MAKES THE PITTSBURGH PENGUINS, OR HOCKEY IN GENERAL, GREAT? I am a sport junkie and love all of the Pittsburgh sports teams. However, hockey always has and will remain #1 due to the speed of the game and the skill that it takes to perform. It is non-stop and you need total attention or you can miss the best part of the game at any given moment.

PENGUINS AND FLYERS TEAM UP TO HOST
NHL YOUTH CUP
By Ashley Roseman and Heather Schrecengost
The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex kicked off its tournament season with the third annual NHL Youth Cup, hosted by the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers and organized by Penguins Elite Hockey Director, Tim Cook. Eighteen teams from the Eastern United States represented their home associations and took part in a battle for champion of their age division. Players and families were welcomed with music, energy, and excitement as they entered the building. Representing the Penguins Elite, the 2005 Penguins Elite beat the Junior Hurricanes in a 2-0 victory for the championship title. However, team Comcast and Junior Islanders didn’t leave the tournament empty handed. 2003 team Comcast was able to bring home the trophy in an exciting 5-4 overtime win against the Penguins Elite team. The 2001 Junior Islanders outmatched the Penguins Elite, defeating them 3-0. Aside from the on-ice tournament, individuals had the opportunity to represent their team in a shooting skills competition using UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex’s Rapid Shot technology. The Top Gun Shootout winners included John Lundy (2001), Drew Tsakonis (2003), and Daniel Venture (2005). These lucky winners received an autograph jersey along with a trophy and bragging rights. The buzz created from the tournament itself wasn’t the only exciting element of the weekend. The selfie station was a hit, giving players and families a chance to dress up and act silly in front of the camera. They posed for pictures with cardboard cutouts of Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, while wearing colored wigs, funny hats, and scary masks. At the end of the tournament, the pictures were displayed around the selfie station where families could take home pictures of the memories they made throughout the weekend. Brothers and sisters of the players were able to get in on the excitement of the tournament as well, creating signs at our Kid Zone that they were able to hold high during the games to show their support. The Kid Zone featured movies, games, and crafts to keep family members occupied and give the parents a rest during the long days of the tournament. These aspects created a unique experience for tournament-goers to enjoy. For upcoming Penguins Elite events and schedules, please visit pittsburghpenguinselite.com.

PENGUINS PROFILE
OLLI
MAATTA By: Mark Madden
28
Before training camp, it was thought that Kris Letang and Olli Maatta would be the Penguins’ top defense pair: The two best blueliners, playing many minutes together. That idea sounded better than it worked. It wasn’t long before coach Mike Johnston realized that it would be better to spread the talents of Letang and Maatta throughout his lineup. That didn’t faze Maatta. He had a bit of an early-season hiccup, but the third-year NHLer soon found his stride and was contributing in his usual cool fashion. “Early in the season, you’re still trying to find chemistry with somebody,” said Maatta, 21. “But you can play with anybody. It doesn’t really matter which one of these six guys you play with. They’re all really great [defensemen]. We do a good job communicating, so it’s not a big transition if you switch pairings.” When asked if swapping partners alters the way he plays, Maatta responded, “A little bit, but not a lot.” Maatta paired with We did a good job Rob Scuderi for the with our neutral-zone Penguins’ 2-1 home victory vs. Toronto on transition. I just try Oct. 17, and the result to get [the shot] on was perhaps Maatta’s best game of the net as quick as I can. young season. Good things happen Maatta scored what proved to be the when you do that. game-winning goal at Olli Maatta 6:28 of the first period, netting just 39 seconds after Evgeni Malkin opened the Penguins’ account. Maatta’s pass got teammate Sergei Plotnikov into the Toronto zone with possession. Plotnikov’s shot hit a Maple Leaf and caromed to Maatta between the circles, and he put a wrist shot behind Toronto goalie Jonathan Bernier. “We did a good job with our neutral-zone transition,” Maatta said. “I just try to get [the shot] on net as quick as I can. Good things happen when you do that.” Maatta liked skating in tandem with Scuderi, a 12-year NHL veteran. continued on page 31

“Scudsy is really solid and calm out there, and I really enjoy playing with him,” said the 6-foot-2, 206-pounder. “He talks a lot, and he’s really solid defensively. He’s so calm, and that really helped me today.” Not that the Finnish native wouldn’t enjoy partnering Letang: “Tanger’s a great player to play with. He makes the game really easy.” Not much was easy for the Penguins in the season’s early going. They opened up with three straight losses, and then eked out a 2-0 win over Ottawa followed by the aforementioned onegoal victory over the Leafs. Maatta, however, feels things are headed in the right direction. “The main thing is, we’re competing hard,” Maatta said after the Penguins beat Toronto. We’re working hard, and we’ve got that little bit of edge in our game. We need to keep that in. “Tonight, I thought we did a good job [offensively]. We just couldn’t get it in. In the second period we let off the gas a bit, and let them back in the game. The main thing is to keep working hard. We can’t let off the gas.” Maatta had one goal and a plus-3 mark in the Penguins’ first five games. Last season, Maatta was limited to 20 games by problems that included thyroid cancer, shoulder surgery and mumps. Maatta had one goal, eight assists and was plus-1. Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN
Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, has been co-owner of the Penguins since 1999. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including nine straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past eight years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open CONSOL Energy Center in August, 2010. The facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. The Penguins ownership group, local labor organizations and members of the Pittsburgh business community honored Lemieux in 2012 with a statue to commemorate his career and contributions to the city and the region. Appropriately named “Le Magnifique,” the statue, by nationally-acclaimed sculptor Bruce Wolfe, can be seen outside the Trib Total Media gate at CONSOL Energy Center. RON BURKLE CO-OWNER
Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in technology, retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, has been co-owner of the Penguins for 16 years. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they became one of the most outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. The Penguins reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009 and won the Cup in ‘09. The team’s ownership has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign many of the team’s young core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year — leading to nine straight playoff berths, and three appearances in the conference finals in the past eight years. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award. DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT
David Morehouse is chief executive officer and president of the Penguins, overseeing all aspects of the team’s operation. The Penguins have become one of the NHL’s strongest business entities during his tenure — selling out every game for eight-plus seasons, setting new standards for corporate sales and television ratings and increasing their focus on innovative youth marketing. Morehouse joined the team as a consultant on the arena project in 2004 and was named team president in April 2007. He was given the additional responsibilities of chief executive officer in August 2010. Under his leadership, the Penguins have reshaped their strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, community interaction, corporate outreach and cutting-edge technology. Beyond that, the Penguins have led all U.S.-based NHL teams in local television ratings for six-straight seasons and rank among the league leaders in social media followers, website traffic and merchandise sales. A strong commitment to fan outreach includes an annual event where players personally deliver season tickets to fans’ homes and a special preseason game were all 18,000 tickets are distributed free to local youth. Morehouse also was a driving force behind the new UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, which opened in August. It is the first facility to combine hockey with a world-class medical center and sports performance complex. Morehouse joined the Penguins following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill — as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

JIM RUTHERFORD
EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT & GENERAL MANAGER
Jim Rutherford is in his second season as executive vice president and general manager of the Penguins. During his first year, the Penguins qualified for their ninth-consecutive postseason berth despite playing a majority of the final two months without arguably the team’s top-three defensemen. Whether it’s listening in on Coach Mike Johnston’s pregame speech, hearing mic’d up Penguins players talking on the bench or traveling to Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, with Sidney Crosby as he trains for the upcoming season, In The Room delivers unique, unprecedented coverage of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The show has won back-to-back Emmy Awards as the best sports series in the Mid-Atlantic region in both 2014 and 2015. “The idea of doing our own show developed because of the success of HBO’s 24/7 Road to the Winter Classic in 2010-11,” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse. “We got a lot of positive feedback from our fans about the unbelievable access to players and coaches. With In The Room, we can continue to show fans a side of the team they’ve never seen before.”

TEAM HOSTS GOLF TOURNAMENT TO FUND
SCHOLARSHIPS
On September 15, 2015, the Penguins organization welcomed in the new hockey season by hosting a golf tournament — Summer Sticks presented by Reed Smith — to fund the Penguins Foundation’s annual scholarship programs. With the tournament’s overwhelming success and the support of Reed Smith, foundation scholarships have increased from three in 2013 to a record 21 scholarships in 2015. Each scholarship is valued at $1,500 for the first year of college, with an additional $1,000 award for the student’s second year of college if a 3.0 GPA is maintained and a minimum of 24 credit hours are earned. Over the past two years, the Penguins Foundation and Reed Smith have awarded 39 scholarships. A Penguins tradition for decades, the scramble-style tournament featured Penguins players and coaches serving as celebrity team captains. A great time was had by all for a most worthy cause.

USA HOCKEY IMPRESSED WITH PITTSBURGH AS POTENTIAL HOST FOR 2018 IIHF
WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP By Sam Kasan
The Penguins want to bring the world to Pittsburgh. Brass from USA Hockey were in the Steel City earlier this month for a site visit as Pittsburgh is one of three finalists vying to host the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship — a tournament that has only been played in the U.S. five times. “We obviously think that we are by far the best city to host this event,” said Penguins CEO and President David Morehouse. “We think Pittsburgh is uniquely positioned to host world-class events. This is truly a world-class event. “It’s the type of event that’s a capstone of everything we’ve done over the last 10 years in Pittsburgh to grow the game of hockey.” Buffalo and St. Louis are the other two finalists. A decision on the host city will be made by the end of the year. During this site visit, USA Hockey attended the Penguins’ home opener on Oct. 13 against Montreal and traveled with team executives to Erie on Oct. 14 as Erie Insurance Arena — which is home of the Ontario Hockey League’s Erie Otters — would be the secondary rink. “Our intention was to come in and get a more in-depth understanding of the facilities and the operations and logistics in hosting this event in Pittsburgh and Erie,” said Mike Bertsch, USA Hockey’s assistant executive director of marketing and communications. Twelve organizations contacted USA Hockey about hosting the event. The pool was narrowed down to five NHL clubs and from there, to three. Over the next 6-8 weeks the committee will evaluate the bids before making the final selection. “With Pittsburgh and Erie, we’re very impressed with what we’ve seen,” Bertsch said. “Our objective was to look over the facilities and accommodations for the athletes and the presentation of the event.” The two-and-a-half-week tournament takes place in late December/ early January each year. “USA Hockey is located on Bob Johnson Drive and I know that name is synonymous with a lot of things here,” Johannson said. “It’s a great day for hockey and we’re pleased to be here in Pittsburgh.”

THE UPMC LEMIEUX SPORTS COMPLEX
IS NOW OPEN
On August 14th, the Pittsburgh Penguins and UPMC opened a brand-new, state-of-the-art practice and medical facility. The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry serves as the official practice home of the Penguins, and is the first medical facility in the country to conduct elite sports medicine research focusing on hockey-related training, rehab and injury prevention. The 185,000-square foot facility includes 54,000 square feet of clinical space, offering expert care in orthopaedics, concussion management, physical and occupational therapy and on-site MRI and x-ray imaging. The complex features two sheets of ice and the Penguins have a locker room and weight room similar to those at CONSOL Energy Center as well as other NHL-style facilities for coaches and players. The two sheets of ice are home to the Penguins Elite youth hockey program in addition to amateur and high school games, adult hockey leagues and instructional camps and clinics. The facility also offers public skating and figure skating and will host community events. continued on page 91

Gary Roberts, the former NHL star who played parts of two seasons with the Penguins, oversees the philosophy and off-ice training regimen at the facility’s Sports Performance Center. He also consults with full-time UPMC staff to create fitness programs that can benefit players at all levels of hockey. Another former NHL player, Matt Herr, serves as executive director of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. An outstanding two-sport athlete at the University of Michigan, Herr was drafted by professional teams in both hockey (Washington Capitals) and baseball (Atlanta Braves). He played 58 NHL games with Washington, Florida and Boston and worked in both prep school hockey and as a regional manager for USA Hockey when his playing days were over. Herr oversees business and hockey operations at the complex and will work with UPMC Sports Medicine and the Sports Performance Center to design an integrated development model for hockey. The sports medicine clinic includes 24 private patient rooms and a physical therapy gym overlooking the Penguins’ practice rink. There also is a dedicated sports performance space including a sprinting track and batting cages.

PENGUINS DEVELOPING AMATEUR
HOCKEY PLAYERS AT UPMC LEMIEUX SPORTS COMPLEX By Joseph Guzy
The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry isn’t just the new practice rink of the Penguins. The young hockey players in Pittsburgh are the real owners of this first-class facility. “Everybody thinks it’s just for the Penguins,” said Matt Herr, Executive Director of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. “But anyone can come here and sign up. You can come here and work with our staff. Then you can go into the weight room and train with Gary Roberts. Then maybe next year you can even play for Penguins Elite.” The creation of the player pool for Penguins Elite, Western Pennsylvania’s premier AAA amateur hockey organization, also comes from the new facility with the Penguins Mite skating and skills program. “The Mite development program is four to six-year-olds and then six to eight-year-olds,” Herr said. “And all those players can all play on Penguins Elite.” The facility has so much more to offer in addition to the Mite Development League. They also have the Penguins Hockey School, which offers year-round leagues, camps and clinics. Power skating clinics are run by Max Ivanov, a well-known power skating instructor and skill development coach who works with Evgeni Malkin. Ty Hennes, a former standout player for Boston College, leads the skills sessions. And goalie training for players of all levels are run by Mike Chiasson, a former QMJHL goalie with the Rimouski Oceanic who played four years at Acadia University in Nova Scotia. continued on page 95

All in all, the goal is to produce better hockey players. According to Herr, the most important part of their development program is pushing kids to take their own path. “We want these kids to be able to go on their own and be able to develop their own game while having fun,” Herr said. “You watch all the great players, the guys that are creative and can score. “Half of Sidney Crosby’s skill is his thinking of the game. We want to encourage that with all of our players that come through here.” Perhaps the best place for young hockey players to do that is at the GNC Skills Development Center inside the facility. Herr calls it the “Dave and Buster’s of hockey.” It features a RapidShot system referred to as “the batting cage for hockey players,” three RapidHands puck-handling training stations and a 60-foot resistance skating lane. “Kids have their swipe card with $20.00 on it, and Mom can sit and drink a latte while reading her book in the lobby and the kid can stickhandle and shoot,” Herr said. “It’s a key component because our big theme is that we can work with you all you want but in the end, you have to take ownership of your development.” For more information on all of these programs, visit UPMCLemieuxSportsComplex.com

THE RUSH Introduced in the mid 1990’s, the Pittsburgh Penguins Student Rush Program is one of the most popular and well known marketing initiatives of the team. Designed to sell remaining game day inventory, the Student Rush program provides the Pittsburgh Penguins an opportunity to introduce new fans to the game of hockey at a discounted rate. With many past Student Rush participants now attending games as Pittsburgh Penguins Season Ticket Holders, the program has been successful in developing a long-term relationship with young, active Pittsburghers. During the 2015-16 season, an estimated 200 Student Rush tickets will be made available for each regular season home game at CONSOL Energy Center. Eligible students have access to purchase these tickets through an exclusive, day of game, online pre-sale. To receive pre-sale information, students can text RUSH to 32623 to register for the Student Rush Mobile Club. Each pre-game text also includes the opportunity to win two free tickets to the next home game! In addition to the 200 tickets offered each game, several games have been designated special Student Rush nights. For these games, at least 500 tickets will be available online! For more information on the Pittsburgh Penguins Student Rush program, the terms and conditions and a schedule of special Student Rush nights, scan the code at the top of the page or visit pittsburghpenguins.com/studentrush. All tickets are subject to availability. Standard data rates may apply. Max 4 messages per week. To end service to the Student Rush Mobile Alert program, text STOP RUSH to 32623. HOCKEY
ETIQUETTE 101 Our goal? To create an awesome game experience for all fans! Help make that happen by remembering the following: 1.
DO NOT ENTER OR EXIT THE SEATING AREA DURING PLAY! Hockey is fast — and goals can be missed in an instant. Fans moving through rows and up aisles can block the view of an entire seating area. Wait until the whistle blows to make your move. HINT #1: The red light above the penalty boxes is lit for TV timeouts. TV timeouts occur at the first whistle stops inside the 14:00, 10:00, and 6:00 minute mark of each period, EXCEPT following an icing call or goal. When the light comes on, this is your chance to make a dash to the restroom or your seats!
T:8.5”
B:8.75”
S:7.5”
HINT #2: The concourse TVs now feature a countdown clock during the intermissions, smart huh? Thank the season ticket holders for recommending this awesome idea! 2.
NO LEANING! We know you are into the game, but leaning creates a ripple effect, affecting the view of the fans in the rows behind you. Sit back so all can enjoy the game!
3.
KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE PUCK! Pucks can hurt when they enter the seating area!
4.
CONSOL Energy Center is a non-smoking facility; smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, is prohibited.
5.
It’s hard to like fans of the opposing team, we get it. However, we think it is pretty cool that they chose to come to our building. Be aware of children sitting around you and let the guys on the ice do the talking!
6.
Cheer, clap and let the players know you are here! Hockey is the best sport to watch live — have fun!

MIKE LANGE
PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER
One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 41th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

Heads UP Pittsburgh is a first of its kind program that has served as the blueprint for other NHL and professional sports organizations since KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE its creation in 2010. Heads UP Pittsburgh is a partnership with UPMC Sports Medicine and funded by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. The purpose of the program is to reduce the amount of concussions in youth sports by providing free baseline concussion testing to young athletes, developing educational initiatives for athletes, parents, coaches, officials, teachers and pediatricians and finally support research projects. The results are quite impressive, since 2011 the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine have been able to: Baseline tests over 17,000 athletes, ages seven to 14 in 30 different sports Our staffs have educated over 45,000 people about concussions and sports related injuries 50,000 educational brochures were distributed at baseline test sites, pediatrician offices, schools and local rinks The Foundation funded over 4,000 neck strengthening kits with protocols to develop neck strength in young players From the neck strengthening program 500+ athletes became involved in a concussion research project Addressing other sport injuries the Foundation provided 3,000 free Duraband flexibility kits Next year we will introduce a new pediatric version of the baseline test targeted at seven to nine year-old players. Through your support of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation events we continue to grow our programs dealing with physical well-being for the young people of our region. For more information about Heads UP Pittsburgh and testing locations, visit our website at pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org.

CULLEN EMBRACING
OPPORTUNITY By: Joseph Guzy
Matt Cullen skated off the ice after a 4-3 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks in Game Six of Round One of the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs. No trophy. No fanfare. His season with the Nashville Predators was over. With 17 NHL seasons under his belt on seven different teams, 626 points (219+407) in 1,215 career games and a Stanley Cup in 2006, retirement certainly seemed like an option for Cullen. But when the Pittsburgh Penguins came calling, Cullen answered without hesitation. “The pedigree in here, it’s an organization with a reputation for winning and an organization that’s committed to winning,” Cullen said. “It’s an opportunity that doesn’t present itself very often throughout a guy’s career, if ever.” With the 38-year-old’s career winding down, he knows exactly how important and how rewarding this opportunity can be. “It was just an opportunity for me to number one, come and experience everything that comes with playing in a hockey town and an organization like this,” Cullen said. “But number two, and most importantly, have an opportunity to have a chance at winning another Stanley Cup.” Every hockey player wants a chance to hoist the Stanley Cup, perhaps even more so after getting a taste of it already. But with continued on page 131

his new team in particular, Cullen notices a difference between this group and the Carolina Hurricanes he won the Stanley Cup with in 2006. “What I like about this group is that there are guys that have been to the top of the mountain, so to speak, and want to get back there,” Cullen said. “They’re hungry in here and I think there are guys that have a really strong desire to win it.” Even though Cullen’s name was engraved on Lord Stanley’s Cup over nine years ago, the veteran centerman hasn’t stopped giving himself the tools to win. “It’s always been clear to me that the game has always been getting faster and faster,” Cullen said. “If you’re able to skate, you give yourself an opportunity to be effective offensively. “That’s been my focus every summer and every season is maintaining my speed. I’ve been blessed that way with being able to skate. I keep my legs strong and fast. That, to me, is where I generate offense from is moving and skating.” While Cullen was working to maintain his speed, his family, including his three sons, were getting ready to make the move to Pittsburgh. To say they were pleasantly surprised with the Steel City would be an understatement. “I’ve been absolutely blown away by it. I really like it a lot,” Cullen said. “You go into a new area and you’re just not really sure what you’re going to get. I’ve just been really impressed with it. I love it.” continued on page 132

As if their dad being a professional hockey player isn’t cool enough, the Cullen boys are certainly enjoying life in a hockey town. “They’re just loving it,” Cullen said with a laugh. “As far as a town for kids and kids that like hockey, I don’t know if it gets much better than Pittsburgh.” And while Cullen doesn’t have to bring his parental duties to the rink, he’s certainly embracing his role as a veteran presence in the locker room — which is one of the main reasons general manager Jim Rutherford wanted to bring the Minnesota native to Pittsburgh. “It’s part of being one of the older guys,” Cullen said with a grin. “Doing your best to help guys feel comfortable when you’re going through tough times but also when you’re going through really good times — not allowing yourself to get too carried away with yourself but just maintaining that focus on where we need to be.” Penguins rookie Daniel Sprong has certainly benefitted from Cullen’s knowledge. “He always says, ‘Just stay calm. Don’t be nervous,’” Sprong said of his linemate Cullen. “‘Just play the game you know how to play.’” Cullen has been able to help Sprong on the ice as well. The 17-year NHL veteran was credited with the primary assist on Sprong’s first NHL goal. “It’s always fun to be a part of something special like that,” Cullen said with a smile. “It brings you back to being a rookie and scoring your first goal. There’s nothing like it.”

FLEURY STEERS PENGUINS
BACK DOWN WINNING PATH By: Jason Seidling
Like a fine wine, Marc-Andre Fleury continues to get better with age. Coming off arguably the best two-year statistical stretch of his career the past two seasons, Fleury is showing no signs of slowing down, as his play in the early going has been a key factor in Pittsburgh steering its direction back down the straightaway from the potential dark, dreary path it was headed towards. Thanks to a bevy of offseason acquisitions that included Phil Kessel, Eric Fehr and Nick Bonino, among others, expectations were that the Penguins would resume their high-scoring ways, negating the need for Fleury to stand on his head as he did the majority of the second half of the 2014-15 campaign. But three goals in three games — all losses nonetheless — put the Penguins in the unenviable spot of needing a win in game number four, an October 15 home meeting with the Ottawa Senators. Although offense remained at a premium, Fleury ensured that tallies from Evgeni Malkin and rookie Daniel Sprong (first NHL goal) were more than enough, as the 30-year-old backstop turned aside all 22 shots he faced to pick up career shutout No. 39. “It was a good feeling,” a relieved Fleury said afterwards. “They had some key chances, but I think our guys came back and tried hard to stop some plays, so they didn’t get some good shots on all of them.” Two nights after getting the Penguins into the win column for the first time, Fleury was strong again versus Toronto, making 26 continued on page 144

saves on 27 shots in career game number 600, including all 14 pucks he saw the final two periods, helping the Penguins hold on to a 2-1 victory, establishing the club’s first winning streak of the young season. Yes, the offense still wasn’t quite the juggernaut everyone expected, but that matters less with a goaltender willing and able to perform under tight pressure. “It was good we got two [goals],” Fleury said. “We’ll be fine. It was a close game, but we didn’t give them too much, so that was a big help. [The goals] will come. “I like to win. [Whether] it’s 5-1 or 2-1, it doesn’t matter.” There’s no doubt the goals will come, and when they do, it will probably be in bunches. But until then, it’s good the Penguins know they have a rock they can count on in Fleury, whose 1.83 goals-against average and .937 save percentage through five appearances represents one of his best starts. Pittsburgh’s team MVP a season ago, Fleury is coming off a banner campaign that saw him establish both career and franchise bests with 10 shutouts, catapulting the Sorel, Quebec native to equal his career low with a 2.32 goals-against average. Since Mike Bales became his goaltending coach prior to the ’13-14 campaign, Fleury has posted a league-best 16 shutouts (tied with reigning MVP Carey Price). That comes out to one shutout every 8.3 starts, compared to one every 19.4 starts prior to Bales’ arrival. You can’t win if you can’t score. With Fleury posting zeroes at the rate he has, Pittsburgh’s offense will have time to find its groove. When it does so, look out, because it might not stop.

ICEBURGH Iceburgh, the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins, has been entertaining hockey fans worldwide since 1992. As one of the Penguins’ most popular ambassadors, not to mention one of the NHL’s most beloved mascots, you can find Iceburgh leading cheers, beating drums and dancing in the aisles at every Penguins home game, attending major hockey events around the world, visiting local schools, or just spending time at area hospitals and community events. Iceburgh has even been asked to be a guest of honor at numerous wedding celebrations in recent years! There’s no doubt about it, Iceburgh is one busy Penguin! In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture Sudden Death. He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. Last season, during his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game in Columbus, Iceburgh helped the Eastern Conference mascots defeat the Western Conference by scoring two goals and two assists in the first annual NHL Mascot Showdown while also emerging victorious in the mascot dance competition. To request an Iceburgh appearance at your next community or special event, please complete the online request form by visiting pittsburghpenguins. com and selecting “Iceburgh” under the “Fan Zone” section.

DEVELOPING DEFENSEMEN By: Mike Prisuta
Change is inevitable, a yearly occurrence in the NHL. But that doesn’t make it any easier to deal with, particularly when the moving parts are on defense. Just three seasons ago the Penguins’ blueline crew was populated by established, reliable and, in some instances, grizzled veterans. In 2013-14, when the Penguins went 51-24-7 for 109 points, the unit was most identifiable, when healthy, by the beenthere-done-that likes of Kris Letang, Paul Martin, Matt Niskanen, Brooks Orpik and Rob Scuderi. By the time last season rolled around Niskanen and Orpik had moved along to Washington. The Penguins had moved along without them and finished 43-27-12 for 98 points. This season opened with Martin no longer in the picture after signing with San Jose. “If you take a look at our team over the last couple of years, some of our older defensemen that were still capable of playing in the league were offered contracts that allowed them to play for other teams,” second-year head coach Mike Johnston noted. “When that happens and you lose guys of that age and quality, then you have to start bringing in some young players. “When I came into the organization I thought we had a lot of good, young defensemen, really good young, up-and-coming defensemen. There is a time when you play them in the minors, you develop them. You’re working with them. But now they have to become NHL defensemen. So how do you do that? You have to start to transition them in. Giving them an opportunity is part of that.” continued on page 157

The Penguins still have Scuderi, who played career game No. 724 on Oct. 17 when Toronto visited CONSOL Energy Center. Letang, despite some health issues in recent seasons, was approaching 500 career games (495) when the Maple Leafs came to town. And Ben Lovejoy, who played career game No. 273 against Toronto, brought experience to his second tour of duty with the organization. But the other five defensemen on the season-opening roster were in various stages of development, from Brian Dumoulin (19 career NHL regular-season games through Oct. 17) to Adam Clendening (22), to Tim Erixon (93), to Olli Maatta (103) to Ian Cole (192). “For young defensemen the one thing is you have to be a little patient with them,” Johnston maintained. “As a defenseman, there are more mistakes that are noticeable. As a forward there are fewer mistakes that are noticeable. And sometimes their confidence takes a hit. At this level it’s all about confidence. It’s all about keeping your confidence in key situations. “Bringing ‘Dumo’ in like we did last year in the playoffs, I know we looked at it, we said, ‘Geez, we’re bringing a young defenseman into a playoff, how’s he going to react?’ But that experience was so valuable for him right now. It was by accident just because of the injuries we had but that has really helped him out.” Letang and Maatta are the highest-profile players and the high-end skill players of the group. Scuderi is a veteran leader and an adept penalty-killing presence. continued on page 158

Cole, 26, falls somewhere in between, which Johnston finds intriguing. “Ian Cole to me is still a blend,” Johnston said. “He defends well and he does have some jump in his game. I don’t consider him a true offensive defenseman. I think he’s a little bit of a blend. “He has to be a combination of good-defensive, hard-to-playagainst defenseman, and a guy who can jump into the play. As I talked to him about it, it’s about being physical, being gritty in his own zone, that type of player that we need on the back end. And then also he has really good skating to get up on the play and join the rush. “The more minutes he gets it’ll be the better he is at both things.” More minutes, more shifts, more games, more experience, individually and in pairs, are what matter most at present. It’s also about what the Penguins’ transitioning defensive corps can consistently do with the minutes allotted in terms of promoting development. “We need to do all the little things that make us successful, that help you win games in the NHL, which is block shots, have good sticks and not necessarily run at guys but certainly if the opportunity presents itself hitting guys and creating separation,” Cole said. It’s early yet but Johnston likes where all of this is headed. “It’s good to see with our young defensemen that they’re starting to progress,” he said.

Forward • 2nd round, 46th overall Sprong, who was ranked 20th among North American skaters heading into the 2015 NHL Draft by Central Registry, paced the Charlottetown Islanders of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in goals (39), assists (49) and points (88) for the second straight season in 2014-15. The previous year, Sprong finished second among QMJHL rookies with 68 points (30G-38A-68P) in 67 games en route to being named to the League’s All-Rookie Team. Simon finished that tournament with six points (1G-5A) in 10 games. Simon also helped his country top Canada at the 2014 World Junior Championship with the game-deciding shootout goal. He has become a Pirates fan since coming to North America.
FREDERICK TIFFELS
Forward • 6th round, 167th overall In 2014-15 Tiffels posted nine goals and 19 points in his freshman season with Western Michigan under Andy Murray, who previously served as the head coach of the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings (1999-2006) and the St. Louis Blues (2006-10). Before joining the Broncos, Tiffels also played one season in the USHL with Cedar Rapids, Fargo and Muskegon. BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Tiffels is a native of Cologne, Germany and he represented his country in the 2014 and ’15 World Junior Championships. He came overseas to play hockey in the USHL and now college. He has incredible size for a forward at 6-foot-7 and 200 pounds. BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Pavlychev cut his hockey teeth in Pennsylvania with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights, a junior team, then in the Atlantic Junior Hockey League, alongside fellow draft pick Daniel Sprong. Pavlychev has committed to play collegiate hockey this season for Penn State University.
