THE NHL By: Mike Prisuta
NEVER-BEEN-DONE SHUTOUTS: The Blackhawks became the first team to win back-to-back overtime shutouts since OT was reintroduced in 1983-84 when they posted a 1-0 extra-session victory over Tampa Bay on Oct. 24 and another against Anaheim on Oct. 26. Those two victories also made the Blackhawks the first defending-Stanley Cup champion to shut out their opponents from the previous season’s conference final

BENN THERE, DONE THAT: Stars LW Jamie Benn, the reigning Art Ross Trophy winner, shared the NHL lead with nine goals and led the NHL with 17 points through 11 games. Benn’s 17 points at that juncture were the most by a Stars player since the franchise began playing in Dallas in 1993-94.

The Sabres outshot their opponents nine times in their first 11 games and went 4-5-0 in those games. It took Buffalo 77 games to outshoot nine opponents last season, something the Sabres managed just 10 times overall (5-5-0) in 2014-15.
SLOW STARTERS: Tampa Bay was the only team in the NHL not to have achieved a lead after a first period through 12 games this season.

THE SERIES [VS] CANADIENS
Tonight the Penguins host the Montreal Canadiens for the second time in 30 days. Montreal earned a 3-2 victory here in Pittsburgh’s home opener on Oct. 13 as Carey Price made 31 saves and Max Pacioretty scored twice. Beau Bennett and Kris Letang had the Penguins’ goals. . . Pacioretty has 11 goals in 21 career regular-season games against Pittsburgh. . . These teams have alternated wins over the last eight meetings. . . Montreal has won three consecutive games here in Pittsburgh; the last time it won four straight here was Oct. 21, 1975 through Oct. 23, 1976, when the Habs outscored the Penguins, 25-9. . . Pittsburgh has had only three power-play chances in its last two home games against Montreal. . . The Canadiens have scored first in eight of their last 12 games against the Penguins, who won their first six games this season when scoring the game’s first goal. Pittsburgh is 12-0-1 the last 13 times it has scored first against Montreal since dropping a 4-2 decision in Montreal on Feb. 3, 2009. . .Tomas Fleischmann, who also scored here last month, has 12 goals in 27 career games against Pittsburgh — including eight goals in 14 road games against the Penguins. . . Last month’s loss here marked the first time in his career that Sidney Crosby failed to record a point in a regular-season home game against Montreal (12+12 in 16 games). his last eight home games against Montreal and goals in six of his last nine games overall against the Habs. . . The next meeting between the teams is Jan. 9 in Montreal. . . In 202 all-time regularseason meetings between the teams, the Penguins are 60-111-8 with 23 ties, including a home record of 39-47-3 with 13 ties. The Canadiens and Minnesota Wild (3-5-1) are the only teams against which the Penguins have a sub-.500 home record all-time. . . Price is 11-10-3 all-time against the Penguins with one shutout.
THE PENGUINS
This game concludes a series of five consecutive games against Canadian teams. The Penguins ended a four-game road trip in Calgary on Saturday night, a trip that began with a 4-0 win in Toronto on Oct. 31 and included stops in Vancouver and Edmonton. . . Beginning with this game, Pittsburgh plays six of its next seven games at home. The Penguins will host Columbus on Friday. . . After losing their first three games of the season, the Penguins rallied to win seven of their next eight games. This team thus had won more of its first 11 games (seven) than all but six other Pittsburgh teams. . . The last of those victories, a 4-0 win in Toronto on Oct. 31 in which Marc-Andre Fleury recorded his 40th career shutout, left the Penguins two points out of first place in the Metropolitan Division. . . those first 11 games, the Penguins were tied with the Rangers for the NHL’s best defensive record, allowing just 1.82 goals per game. . . Former Capital Eric Fehr made his Pittsburgh debut in the Toronto victory, becoming the 58th player in team history to score a goal in his first game with the team. Chris Kunitz’s power-play goal in the win over the Leafs gave the Penguins a PPG in consecutive games for the first time this season. . . Fleury had put together a GAA of 1.71 and a save percentage of .942 through his first 10 starts, both marks being the best in his career after 10 starts. . . Jeff Zatkoff made a career-high 50 saves in a 4-3 home win over Buffalo on Oct. 29, his first start of the season. . . Beau Bennett scored goals in consecutive games dressed for the first time in his career when he tallied at Washington in a 3-1 victory Oct. 28.

WITH WHOM DO YOU ATTEND PENGUINS HOME GAMES? I go to most games with my dad or my niece. I bring friends to a lot of games too.
Hometown: Pittsburgh, PA
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE SNACK/FOOD ITEM AT CONSOL Energy Center? My friend Christie and I are obsessed with the pierogi nachos. I also like the Italian sausage, fries with cheese and gravy, and of course, nachos.

WHAT LESSER KNOWN PENGUINS PLAYER (PAST OR PRESENT) HAS LEFT A LASTING IMPRESSION ON YOU? WHAT DID HE DO TO MAKE THAT IMPRESSION? Billy Guerin — he wasn’t a Penguin at the time, but watching him in the 1996 World Cup of Hockey instantly made me a fan of his. His grit, drive and determination in that series really impressed me. I’m very happy to have chatted with him at one of last year’s season ticket holder happy hours. Also, Matthew Barnaby was a big hero of mine. He wasn’t the biggest guy, but he feared no one. His antics made him one of the most entertaining guys on the ice. continued on page 20

DO YOU HAVE ANY UNIQUE PRE OR POST-GAME PLAYOFF RITUALS? I always wear my jersey scarf, even during playoffs when it’s warm. I always go down the steps second. I always sit on the inside seat. If we get on a good winning streak, I’ll usually stick with the same pregame meal. WHAT IS THE MOST UNIQUE KEEPSAKE IN YOUR PERSONAL COLLECTION OF PENGUINS MEMORABILIA? I have a pair of seats from the Civic Arena. I also have a panoramic picture of the Civic Arena from Game Six of the 2009 Stanley Cup Final. I was at the mall with my niece and she noticed it and asked if we were in it. I told her if we could find ourselves, I’d buy it. Sure enough, there we were in my old seats in E17, row C. DO YOU REMEMBER WHERE YOU WERE WHEN THE PENGUINS WON THE CUP IN ‘91, ‘92 OR ‘09? Watched the first two Cup wins in the living room with my dad. Watched the 2009 championship at my friend’s house. Afterwards, we ran around his neighborhood with our homemade Cup. IN YOUR EYES, WHAT MAKES THE PITTSBURGH PENGUINS, OR HOCKEY IN GENERAL, GREAT? Hockey is pure. It’s teamwork at its best. As we learned with Mario, one superstar won’t make your team a winner. It takes a total team commitment. In addition, I love all the amazing charity work the Penguins have done. And all of the tireless work and dedication Mario has done in the name of cancer research can’t be stressed enough.

For years, ice hockey has been a foundation of Pittsburgh culture. Youth and adults alike gear up and take to the ice for this physically and intellectually demanding game. Sled hockey has given those with disabilities the opportunity to experience and enjoy the game of hockey. Sled hockey is a rapidly growing and internationally recognized sport that plays a key role in the Paralympic games. The Mighty Penguins Sled Hockey program was founded in May of 1998 by volunteers from the Shriners Hospital in Erie, Pennsylvania. Their mission is to provide therapeutic and competitive hockey programs for the benefit of cognitively and physically disabled individuals in Pennsylvania and adjacent areas. Mighty Penguins develops sportsmanship and character, promotes physical fitness, provides educational and cultural experiences, and seeks to guide other sled hockey organizations in running a successful program. Many local organizations support the Mighty Penguins by contributing ice time, equipment, customized hockey gear, insurance, and volunteers to educate and assist the players. The Mighty Penguins continue to build support by increasing player involvement and the number of teams competing in the Pittsburgh area and throughout the United States and Canada. There have been several players that achieved national and international success because of the Mighty Penguins, including 2002 Paralympic Gold Medalist Josh Wirt and 2014 USA Gold Medalist Dan McCoy. UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex has hosted multiple Mighty Penguins events since its opening. Most recently, the Mighty Penguins senior team faced Florida Sled Hockey in a four game series. One of the more exciting parts of the weekend was watching Kelsey DiClaudio, the only woman in the adult men’s program, play for the Mighty Penguins. She has been playing in the program since she was in second grade. In 2014, she made the U.S. development team, the feeder program for the national team. DiClaudio hopes to be the first female player selected to make the national team for the 2018 Winter Games. The Mighty Penguins sled hockey program has grown significantly with 52 players currently in the program. The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex will be home to many Mighty Penguins events in the future. Be a part of this growing sport by following the Mighty Penguins on Twitter @MightyPenguins or by visiting mightypenguins.pointstreaksites.com

PENGUINS PROFILE
BRIAN
DUMOULIN By: Mark Madden

© Getty Images
Brian Dumoulin entered pro hockey in possession of some pedigree. The Maine native played at Boston College, twice earning All-America honors and all-Hockey East laurels. He was a Hobey Baker Award finalist in 2011-12, his final year of collegiate hockey. Dumoulin was taken in the second round (51st overall) of the 2009 NHL draft. He’s 6-foot-4, 207 pounds. He’s big, but he can fly. Dumoulin looks the part. It was a matter of getting a chance to play the part. He spent the bulk of his first three pro seasons (2012-15) with the Penguins’ Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton farm club. He played just 14 NHL games. Then, opportunity knocked: Loudly, as if in a panic. The Penguins faced a rash of injuries to their defensive corps as last spring’s playoffs beckoned. Dumoulin, who hadn’t played an NHL game since Dec. 29, was thrown into a regular shift against the New York Rangers. The ending wasn’t happy: The Penguins lost their first-round series in five games. But Dumoulin did OK: He was plus-one, playing simple yet solid. Dumoulin was a restricted free agent, but the Penguins gave him a two-year, one-way contract. When the 2015-16 season started, Dumoulin was in the defensive mix from the get-go. He feels he benefited greatly from his post-season experience. “It’s the Stanley Cup playoffs,” Dumoulin said, smiling at the memory. “In that situation, I couldn’t be out there admiring or observing. I had to go out there and start playing. That kind of got me going, and I’ve tried to carry that on.” As for the salad days of the current season, Dumoulin said, “It’s been solid so far. It’s been good to get into a rhythm early on, and get with consistent partners. continued on page 31

It feels good to be playing every night. But I feel like I can do more to help this team. Brian Dumoulin
continued from page 29
“In the beginning I started with [Rob Scuderi] and now, being with [Ben Lovejoy], it’s good to build that chemistry early.” Dumoulin, 24, was speaking after the Penguins’ 4-1 home loss to Dallas on Oct. 22. It was a typical solid game for Dumoulin: He played 17:09, got three shots on net and was even on plus-minus. Dumoulin says the coaches give him instructions that are “very specific. They want me to move the puck, get up in the rush, and be solid defensively. “One of the things I control is making a good first pass. Putting the puck in our forward’s hands and creating opportunities for them. It’s also really important for us to be an option for them, and to get going north.” The Penguins ran into some odd obstacles in the campaign’s early going: After 10 games, they had allowed 20 goals, fifth-best in the NHL. But they had scored just 20, which stood third-worst. Odd for a team with so much skill. “We’ve got some great players, and they get good opportunities,” said Dumoulin. “It will come. We’ve just got to focus on the right things, and play the right way.” Dumoulin is trying to do his part. After 10 games, he was minus-1 with no points. “It feels good to be playing every night,” he said. “But I feel like I can do more to help this team. Offensively, I feel like I join the rush more and be more involved.” Dumoulin did well offensively with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton last season. He put up four goals and 29 assists in 62 games. He was also a sparkling plus-25. Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN
Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, has been co-owner of the Penguins since 1999. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including nine straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past eight years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open CONSOL Energy Center in August, 2010. The facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. The Penguins ownership group, local labor organizations and members of the Pittsburgh business community honored Lemieux in 2012 with a statue to commemorate his career and contributions to the city and the region. Appropriately named “Le Magnifique,” the statue, by nationally-acclaimed sculptor Bruce Wolfe, can be seen outside the Trib Total Media gate at CONSOL Energy Center. RON BURKLE CO-OWNER
Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in technology, retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, has been co-owner of the Penguins for 16 years. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they became one of the most outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. The Penguins reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009 and won the Cup in ‘09. The team’s ownership has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign many of the team’s young core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year — leading to nine straight playoff berths, and three appearances in the conference finals in the past eight years. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award. DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT
David Morehouse is chief executive officer and president of the Penguins, overseeing all aspects of the team’s operation. The Penguins have become one of the NHL’s strongest business entities during his tenure — selling out every game for eight-plus seasons, setting new standards for corporate sales and television ratings and increasing their focus on innovative youth marketing. Morehouse joined the team as a consultant on the arena project in 2004 and was named team president in April 2007. He was given the additional responsibilities of chief executive officer in August 2010. Under his leadership, the Penguins have reshaped their strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, community interaction, corporate outreach and cutting-edge technology. Beyond that, the Penguins have led all U.S.-based NHL teams in local television ratings for six-straight seasons and rank among the league leaders in social media followers, website traffic and merchandise sales. A strong commitment to fan outreach includes an annual event where players personally deliver season tickets to fans’ homes and a special preseason game were all 18,000 tickets are distributed free to local youth. Morehouse also was a driving force behind the new UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, which opened in August. It is the first facility to combine hockey with a world-class medical center and sports performance complex. Morehouse joined the Penguins following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill — as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

HOCKEY
ETIQUETTE 101 Our goal? To create an awesome game experience for all fans! Help make that happen by remembering the following: 1.
DO NOT ENTER OR EXIT THE SEATING AREA DURING PLAY! Hockey is fast — and goals can be missed in an instant. Fans moving through rows and up aisles can block the view of an entire seating area. Wait until the whistle blows to make your move. HINT #1: The red light above the penalty boxes is lit for TV timeouts. TV timeouts occur at the first whistle stops inside the 14:00, 10:00, and 6:00 minute mark of each period, EXCEPT following an icing call or goal. When the light comes on, this is your chance to make a dash to the restroom or your seats!
T:8.5”
B:8.75”
S:7.5”
HINT #2: The concourse TVs now feature a countdown clock during the intermissions, smart huh? Thank the season ticket holders for recommending this awesome idea! 2.
NO LEANING! We know you are into the game, but leaning creates a ripple effect, affecting the view of the fans in the rows behind you. Sit back so all can enjoy the game!
3.
KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE PUCK! Pucks can hurt when they enter the seating area!
4.
CONSOL Energy Center is a non-smoking facility; smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, is prohibited.
5.
It’s hard to like fans of the opposing team, we get it. However, we think it is pretty cool that they chose to come to our building. Be aware of children sitting around you and let the guys on the ice do the talking!
6.
Cheer, clap and let the players know you are here! Hockey is the best sport to watch live — have fun!

MIKE LANGE
PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER
One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 41th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

Heads UP Pittsburgh is a first of its kind program that has served as the blueprint for other NHL and professional sports organizations since KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE its creation in 2010. Heads UP Pittsburgh is a partnership with UPMC Sports Medicine and funded by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. The purpose of the program is to reduce the amount of concussions in youth sports by providing free baseline concussion testing to young athletes, developing educational initiatives for athletes, parents, coaches, officials, teachers and pediatricians and finally support research projects. The results are quite impressive, since 2011 the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine have been able to: Baseline tests over 17,000 athletes, ages seven to 14 in 30 different sports Our staffs have educated over 45,000 people about concussions and sports related injuries 50,000 educational brochures were distributed at baseline test sites, pediatrician offices, schools and local rinks The Foundation funded over 4,000 neck strengthening kits with protocols to develop neck strength in young players From the neck strengthening program 500+ athletes became involved in a concussion research project Addressing other sport injuries the Foundation provided 3,000 free Duraband flexibility kits Next year we will introduce a new pediatric version of the baseline test targeted at seven to nine year-old players. Through your support of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation events we continue to grow our programs dealing with physical well-being for the young people of our region. For more information about Heads UP Pittsburgh and testing locations, visit our website at pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org.

Whether it’s listening in on coach Mike Johnston’s pregame speech, hearing mic’d up Penguins players talking on the bench or traveling to Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, with Sidney Crosby as he trains for the upcoming season, In The Room delivers unique, unprecedented coverage of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The show has won back-to-back Emmy Awards as the best sports series in the Mid-Atlantic region in both 2014 and 2015. “The idea of doing our own show developed because of the success of HBO’s 24/7 Road to the Winter Classic in 2010-11,” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse. “We got a lot of positive feedback from our fans about the unbelievable access to players and coaches. With In The Room, we can continue to show fans a side of the team they’ve never seen before.”

Q&A WITH
ERIC
FEHR By Sam Kasan
WHAT’S IT LIKE TO BE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE PENSCAPS RIVALRY? Obviously Pittsburgh was a very tough team to play against when I was in Washington, and as much as you dislike the other team, you always respect them. But now I’m really excited to be a part of the Pittsburgh Penguins and be on the other side of the rivalry. WHAT DO YOU FEEL ARE SOME OF YOUR BIGGEST STRENGTHS THAT YOU CAN BRING TO THIS TEAM? I definitely feel that I can be valuable in the middle at the center ice position and play against other teams’ top lines, but also add some offense. I think I’ve got a little bit more to give in the scoring department, and I’m hoping that I can pick that up in Pittsburgh. Depending on whether I’m playing center or wing, I’m just really looking forward to contributing on offense as well as defense. YOU HAD 19 GOALS LAST SEASON. DID ANYTHING HAPPEN DIFFERENTLY THAT YOU HAD SUCH SUCCESS? HOW DO YOU BUILD ON THAT? I felt a little bit more comfortable at the center position. It was relatively new to me the last couple of years, and I’ve been working on it a lot. Last year I just felt a lot more comfortable and was just able to react and make plays instead of thinking too much at my new position. ARE YOU ABLE TO MOVE FLUIDLY THROUGHOUT THE LINEUP? Definitely. That’s probably one of my better attributes. I grew up in the Capitals system as a scoring winger, and kind of morphed into a checking-line centerman. I have the ability to play the wing, and hopefully score some goals. I have the ability to play center and shut down other teams’ top lines. I’m going to be really interested to see how the coaching staff plans on using me, but I’m excited for a new opportunity.

THE UPMC LEMIEUX SPORTS COMPLEX
IS NOW OPEN
On August 14th, the Pittsburgh Penguins and UPMC opened a brand-new, state-of-the-art practice and medical facility. The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry serves as the official practice home of the Penguins, and is the first medical facility in the country to conduct elite sports medicine research focusing on hockey-related training, rehab and injury prevention. The 185,000-square foot facility includes 54,000 square feet of clinical space, offering expert care in orthopaedics, concussion management, physical and occupational therapy and on-site MRI and x-ray imaging. The complex features two sheets of ice and the Penguins have a locker room and weight room similar to those at CONSOL Energy Center as well as other NHL-style facilities for coaches and players. The two sheets of ice are home to the Penguins Elite youth hockey program in addition to amateur and high school games, adult hockey leagues and instructional camps and clinics. The facility also offers public skating and figure skating and will host community events. continued on page 91

Gary Roberts, the former NHL star who played parts of two seasons with the Penguins, oversees the philosophy and off-ice training regimen at the facility’s Sports Performance Center. He also consults with full-time UPMC staff to create fitness programs that can benefit players at all levels of hockey. Another former NHL player, Matt Herr, serves as executive director of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. An outstanding two-sport athlete at the University of Michigan, Herr was drafted by professional teams in both hockey (Washington Capitals) and baseball (Atlanta Braves). He played 58 NHL games with Washington, Florida and Boston and worked in both prep school hockey and as a regional manager for USA Hockey when his playing days were over. Herr oversees business and hockey operations at the complex and will work with UPMC Sports Medicine and the Sports Performance Center to design an integrated development model for hockey. The sports medicine clinic includes 24 private patient rooms and a physical therapy gym overlooking the Penguins’ practice rink. There also is a dedicated sports performance space including a sprinting track and batting cages.

PENGUINS DEVELOPING AMATEUR
HOCKEY PLAYERS AT UPMC LEMIEUX SPORTS COMPLEX By Joseph Guzy
The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry isn’t just the new practice rink of the Penguins. The young hockey players in Pittsburgh are the real owners of this first-class facility. “Everybody thinks it’s just for the Penguins,” said Matt Herr, Executive Director of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. “But anyone can come here and sign up. You can come here and work with our staff. Then you can go into the weight room and train with Gary Roberts. Then maybe next year you can even play for Penguins Elite.” The creation of the player pool for Penguins Elite, Western Pennsylvania’s premier AAA amateur hockey organization, also comes from the new facility with the Penguins Mite skating and skills program. “The Mite development program is four to six-year-olds and then six to eight-year-olds,” Herr said. “And all those players can all play on Penguins Elite.” The facility has so much more to offer in addition to the Mite Development League. They also have the Penguins Hockey School, which offers year-round leagues, camps and clinics. Power skating clinics are run by Max Ivanov, a well-known power skating instructor and skill development coach who works with Evgeni Malkin. Ty Hennes, a former standout player for Boston College, leads the skills sessions. And goalie training for players of all levels are run by Mike Chiasson, a former QMJHL goalie with the Rimouski Oceanic who played four years at Acadia University in Nova Scotia. continued on page 95

All in all, the goal is to produce better hockey players. According to Herr, the most important part of their development program is pushing kids to take their own path. “We want these kids to be able to go on their own and be able to develop their own game while having fun,” Herr said. “You watch all the great players, the guys that are creative and can score. “Half of Sidney Crosby’s skill is his thinking of the game. We want to encourage that with all of our players that come through here.” Perhaps the best place for young hockey players to do that is at the GNC Skills Development Center inside the facility. Herr calls it the “Dave and Buster’s of hockey.” It features a RapidShot system referred to as “the batting cage for hockey players,” three RapidHands puck-handling training stations and a 60-foot resistance skating lane. “Kids have their swipe card with $20.00 on it, and Mom can sit and drink a latte while reading her book in the lobby and the kid can stickhandle and shoot,” Herr said. “It’s a key component because our big theme is that we can work with you all you want but in the end, you have to take ownership of your development.” For more information on all of these programs, visit UPMCLemieuxSportsComplex.com

FEHR FITTING RIGHT IN By: Joseph Guzy
Eric Fehr came off the ice at the Air Canada Centre on Oct. 31 following his Penguins debut against the Toronto Maple Leafs with a shorthanded goal and two points to his name. It’s exactly the impact Fehr was hoping to make in his return to the ice after recovering from elbow surgery on June 3. “I see myself as a shutdown guy playing against other teams’ top lines,” Fehr said. “I think that’s the biggest thing I try and pride myself on. Not just shutting them down, but trying to outscore them.” It’s only fitting that his first goal would come shorthanded while shutting down the Leafs’ top power-play unit. “Very excited,” Fehr said afterward with a smile. “It’s nice to get that one tonight.” Just about a week prior, Fehr was anxious to get back on the ice. The Penguins picked up a big 2-1 overtime win on the road against Nashville Predators. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to join. “You’re just watching the game,” Fehr said. “You want to be there with the guys and you want to be a part of it all. “I think that’s the thing I’m looking forward to most is being in the dressing room with the guys and going to battle with them. You can’t become close with your teammates until that happens.” Unless your teammates have a fantasy football league. continued on page 131

Eric is comfortable as a two-positional player. He’s a guy who at one time had a 20-goal season, but is also really good on the defensive end of it and can kill penalties. Jim Rutherford
“Check out the St. Louis Rams defense!” goaltender Jeff Zatkoff shouted from his stall to Fehr with excitement. With sweat still running down his forehead, Fehr barely had one foot through the door of the Penguins’ locker room after a Sunday afternoon practice at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex before Zatkoff started giving him updates. The two paired up for the teams’ fantasy football league. “My fantasy football partner over there, we battle our lineups in every week,” Fehr joked. “I think it’s great for the team that we have our own fantasy football league. There’s a lot of chirping back and forth. It keeps us all involved in the room.” The fantasy competition has not only kept Fehr close with his teammates while waiting to be cleared — it also found him a new buddy in Zatkoff. “Coming back in here, he’s one of the guys I hit it off with right away,” Zatkoff said. “He’s a great guy, great teammate.” While friendship is great, the perks of a good fantasy football partner are a welcome bonus. “We’re co-general managers,” Zatkoff said. “My fantasy team was struggling. I was looking to bring someone on board, someone who has the experience that’s been around for awhile.” That experience and dependability isn’t only visible to the backup goaltender. It’s what pushed Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford to sign the 30-year-old forward to a three-year deal in the offseason. “Eric is comfortable as a two-positional player,” Rutherford said. “He’s a guy who at one time had a 20-goal season, but is also really good on the defensive end of it and can kill penalties. “He’s good shutdown guy, actually a very good shutdown guy in that position with the Washington Capitals.” continued on page 132

Many Penguins fans may best remember Fehr for the two goals he scored for the Capitals against the Penguins in the 2011 Winter Classic at Heinz Field. But make no mistake, he’s anxious to be the hero against his former team. “I want to score goals in those games just like I did on the other side,” Fehr said. “CONSOL Energy Center is obviously the home barn now. I just want to continue to play well, score some goals and feel comfortable here.” After spending nine years in the Capitals’ organization, one would expect a lengthy transition period off the ice as well. Luckily, that isn’t the case for the Fehr family. “We’re finally moved into our house,” Fehr said. “We’re really settling in. Definitely feels homey, so that’s a good feeling.” The initial shock of the hills and winding roads of Pennsylvania are starting to wear off as well. “I don’t have to use a navigation system anymore,” Fehr joked. “It definitely feels like I know my way around now.” To be honest, he probably owes some credit to his daughter for his lay of the land. “I think we’ve been to just about every park in the city,” Fehr said. “I take my daughter out to the parks. She really likes to play.”

ROAD TO
PITTSBURGH By: Ryan J. Harr
Skating for five different teams, two in the American Hockey League and three at the National Hockey League level, is never easy. Adam Clendening did it in less than a calendar year. Since September of 2014, he’s called Rockford, Chicago, Vancouver and Utica home. Now, he hopes Pittsburgh becomes his permanent place. Following career-best totals of 12 goals, 47 assists, 59 points and 74 games played with the Rockford IceHogs in the 2013-14 season, Clendening had the goal of making the Chicago Blackhawks roster in the fall of ‘14. Unfortunately, Clendening was the final player re-assigned to the IceHogs at the conclusion of Chicago’s training camp. Then, less than a month into the season, Clendening was recalled on Nov. 20 to the Blackhawks. Clendening will never forget his NHL debut. Less than four minutes into the contest, the Niagara, N.Y. native fired a shot that sneaked passed Calgary Flames’ goaltender Jonas Hiller for his first NHL goal on his first shot. After four games, Clendening was re-assigned back to Rockford, before being traded to the Vancouver Canucks on Jan. 29. Clendening appeared in 17 games with the Canucks, then headed back down to the AHL, where he helped the Utica Comets advance all the way to the Calder Cup Final. Despite falling 4-1 in the Final, Clendening said the year was a success. continued on page 144

continued from page 143
“The season was a bit different than I expected with the trade, but the change was good. Both Vancouver and then Utica were very nice places to play, and I learned a lot on and off the ice.” Clendening noted that the toughest aspect of the constant shuffle from teamto-team, league-to-league, was the styles of play in the NHL versus the AHL. “The game is different because of the style of play in the NHL compared to the AHL. It is a lot more puck possession [in the NHL] and less chaotic as players are more skilled.” During the summer months, with Clendening eager to start training camp with the Canucks, yet again things would not go as he expected. On August 28, Clendening was sent to Pittsburgh with Nick Bonino in a deal that saw Brandon Sutter head out west. Prior to training camp, Clendening was unsure what to expect when he arrived for the first time in Pittsburgh. “Coming into my third new team in less than a year, the guys in the room welcomed me with open arms,” Clendening said. “I had an idea the defensemen here were younger than in Chicago and Vancouver, but I knew I still had to prove to the coaches and management I belong here.” Making the Penguins club out of camp, the two-time AHL AllStar is enjoying his time in the NHL and looking forward to coming to the rink every day. “I grew up watching Sidney [Crosby] and Evgeni [Malkin], so going against those guys in practice, and being in the same locker room, it is pretty surreal.”

ICEBURGH Iceburgh, the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins, has been entertaining hockey fans worldwide since 1992. As one of the Penguins’ most popular ambassadors, not to mention one of the NHL’s most beloved mascots, you can find Iceburgh leading cheers, beating drums and dancing in the aisles at every Penguins home game, attending major hockey events around the world, visiting local schools, or just spending time at area hospitals and community events. Iceburgh has even been asked to be a guest of honor at numerous wedding celebrations in recent years! There’s no doubt about it, Iceburgh is one busy Penguin! In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture Sudden Death. He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. Last season, during his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game in Columbus, Iceburgh helped the Eastern Conference mascots defeat the Western Conference by scoring two goals and two assists in the first annual NHL Mascot Showdown while also emerging victorious in the mascot dance competition. To request an Iceburgh appearance at your next community or special event, please complete the online request form by visiting pittsburghpenguins. com and selecting “Iceburgh” under the “Fan Zone” section.

KEEPING THE
FAITH By: Mike Prisuta
Even as they struggled mightily to score goals in the early going, the Penguins didn’t lose faith. “If you do the right things out there goals are going to come,” winger Patric Hornqvist insisted. That was the mantra the Penguins were sticking to after a season-opening shutout loss in Dallas, after they had scored just three goals in their first three games (all losses), after they’d managed to score goals just two at a time in wins over Ottawa and Toronto, and after they’d needed an empty-net effort from center Nick Bonino to reach three goals in a game in regulation for the first time this season on Oct. 28 at Washington. Eventually, they broke through and got four against the Sabres on Oct. 29 and four more against the Maple Leafs on Oct. 31. And the Penguins exhaled. And then they continued to talk about goals, about how to score them, about what to do when the puck refuses to go into the net and about how to survive the ups and downs of production. That keeping-the-faith part is essential. “That’s the expression we use the most now in hockey, ‘stick with it,’” winger David Perron offered. So is a reliable, consistent structure. continued on page 157

“Any time you have teams that are so-called skilled and talented you still have to have team structure,” head coach Mike Johnston insisted. “The better your team structure is then the better that skill and talent comes forward. “We’re looking for that all the time, that structure to our game so our skill and talent can come forward.” The need to appreciate the current state of the game and how to deal with it is also a prerequisite. Perhaps now more than ever, it’s about getting pucks and bodies to the net. “Goalies are going to stop that first one, the second one if they get great rebound control,” winger Chris Kunitz suggested. “You have to take away their eyes. You want to make sure you have second and third chances, and shoot when they’re not expecting it. “It’s something everyone’s trying to do in the league.” Blocking shots is, too, which means “you have to be smart with your choices,” Kunitz added. Captain Sidney Crosby is likewise a believer in traffic. “All the goalies now are good,” he said. “They’re big, they’re athletic. The more you can get second opportunities; really that’s where the goals are scored. “If they’re going to be able to see it they’re going to be able to stop it.” continued on page 158

continued from page 157
The required response, Crosby maintained, is to “just try to create as much havoc as we can around there.” That’s especially important on the power play, an aspect of the Penguins’ game that was a significant source of frustration in the season’s early stages. While sorting that out the Penguins came to the conclusion that there is strength in numbers, especially with a man-advantage. “Make sure you get shots to the net,” Johnston said. “But then when it’s at the net, we always talk about the screen guy. The screen guy’s there to create rebound opportunities. You have to have rebound guys converging on both sides. We need more guys in those post areas when the shot is coming through.” The four goals the Penguins scored against the Maple Leafs on Oct. 31 upped their total through 11 games to 24. And that had the Penguins in a three-way tie for 24th in the league in that department, along with Los Angeles and Chicago. It’s a process the Penguins have been working on and will continue working to perfect. In the meantime, winning games by any means necessary is what matters most. “Those close games, those low-scoring games, we’re finding ways to win them,” goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury said. “If it’s 2-1 or 5-4 it’s two points, we’ll take it.” That they will. Still, there’s nothing quite like lighting the lamp, as defenseman Ben Lovejoy did for the first time this season and for the 12th time in his 278-game NHL career in the Penguins’ 4-3 win over the Sabres on Oct. 29. “Scoring goals is awesome,” Lovejoy gushed. “I wish I did it a lot more.” His Penguins teammates can relate.
Those close games, those low-scoring games, we’re finding ways to win them. If it’s 2-1 or 5-4 it’s two points, we’ll take it. Marc-Andre Fleury

Forward • 2nd round, 46th overall Sprong, who was ranked 20th among North American skaters heading into the 2015 NHL Draft by Central Registry, paced the Charlottetown Islanders of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in goals (39), assists (49) and points (88) for the second straight season in 2014-15. The previous year, Sprong finished second among QMJHL rookies with 68 points (30G-38A-68P) in 67 games en route to being named to the League’s All-Rookie Team. BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Sprong was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands where his father, Hannie, played professional hockey in Holland in the early 1990s. Simon finished that tournament with six points (1G-5A) in 10 games. Simon also helped his country top Canada at the 2014 World Junior Championship with the game-deciding shootout goal. He has become a Pirates fan since coming to North America.
FREDERICK TIFFELS
Forward • 6th round, 167th overall In 2014-15 Tiffels posted nine goals and 19 points in his freshman season with Western Michigan under Andy Murray, who previously served as the head coach of the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings (1999-2006) and the St. Louis Blues (2006-10). Before joining the Broncos, Tiffels also played one season in the USHL with Cedar Rapids, Fargo and Muskegon. BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Tiffels is a native of Cologne, Germany and he represented his country in the 2014 and ’15 World Junior Championships. He came overseas to play hockey in the USHL and now college.
