AROUND THE NHL By: Mike Prisuta
DON’T FALL BEHIND: The Blackhawks’ 7-6-1 record through 14 games included a 7-1-1 mark when scoring the first goal.
SHOOTOUT TURNAROUND: The Devils’ 7-5-1 effort through 13 games included a 5-1-1 record in their last seven one-goal games. And that was attributable in part to newfound success in shootouts.
10
New Jersey’s 3-2 shootout victory over the Islanders on Oct. 31 upped the Devils’ record to 6-3 over their last nine shootouts dating back to Dec. 19, 2014. Prior to that New Jersey had dropped 22 of 23 shootouts, including an NHL-record 18 in a row from Mar. 15, 2013 through Oct. 21, 2014. The Devils’ 5-4 shootout win on Oct. 22 at Ottawa included a rally from a two-goal deficit in the last six minutes of regulation, the first time in franchise history New Jersey had managed that on the road and the fourth time it had
happened for the Devils overall. That victory also made John Hynes the third coach in NHL history to record his first three victories in overtime or in a shootout. Charles Querrie won three straight in OT with the Toronto St. Pats in 1923 and Todd Richards won twice in overtime and once in a shootout with Minnesota in 2009.

Zetterberg became the 16th active player in the 800-point club, along with Jaromir Jagr, Joe Thornton, Jarome Iginla, Marian Hossa, Patrik Elias, Patrick Marleau, Vincent Lecavalier, Henrik Sedin, Alex Ovechkin, Brad Richards, Shane Doan, Daniel Sedin, Pavel Datsyuk, Sidney Crosby and Alex Tanguay.

SEASON TICKET HOLDER SPOTLIGHT
KEN MAZUR
WITH WHOM DO YOU ATTEND PENGUINS HOME GAMES? In my early seasons as a season ticket holder, I went to almost all of the games with my best friend, Frank. However, he moved to the UK for career reasons after the 2007-08 season. In subsequent seasons, I attended with my friend and coworker Chris and my daughters. Frank has since moved back, so both Frank and Chris attend with me.
Hometown: Pittsburgh, PA Season Ticket Location: 224, Q, 3-4 First Season as a Penguins Season Ticket Holder: 2005
WHAT LESSER KNOWN PENGUINS PLAYER (PAST OR PRESENT) HAS LEFT A LASTING IMPRESSION ON YOU? WHAT DID HE DO TO MAKE THAT IMPRESSION? Michel Dion… loved his mask. When he would flip it up, it looked like a beak/bill. I occasionally had a chance to play goalie in street hockey and would mimic him and the way he covered the puck. WHAT IS THE MOST UNIQUE KEEPSAKE IN YOUR PERSONAL COLLECTION OF PENGUINS MEMORABILIA? My wife made a cross-stitch of the Penguins logo. I’ve always treasured that.

WHAT PENGUINS RELATED STORY DO YOU RETELL MOST OFTEN? My friend Frank and I took a road trip to see the Penguins in Ottawa. People started ribbing us about our jerseys, but then found out we actually drove from Pittsburgh. They thought that was great Ken and his daughters, Anna and Allison, to make the drive in at the Snapshots with Stanley event in 2009. December. We didn’t buy a drink the rest of the night and we are still friends with those folks from Ottawa to this day. Also, my wife and I got married the day the Penguins won the Wales Conference in 1991. The game was on at our reception. Great day for me… getting married and seeing the Penguins win the conference all on the same day. DO YOU REMEMBER WHERE YOU WERE WHEN THE PENGUINS WON THE CUP IN ‘91, ‘92 OR ‘09? Yes, for all three. In 1991, we had just returned from our honeymoon, so I saw that one in my living room. In 1992, I was at a college buddy’s bachelor party. In 2009, I was out with friends watching the game at Buffalo Wild Wings. Side note — In 2008, I was at the game where we lost to the Red Wings. It was so sad to see us lose, but still cool to see the Cup presentation in person. WHICH TEAM/ARENA WOULD YOU LIKE TO VISIT FOR A PENGUINS GAME AND WHY? No question — Montreal. I just think of Montreal as the pinnacle of hockey. There’s so much history. Also, I would love to experience the crowd there and the passion and knowledge of the fans. IN YOUR EYES, WHAT MAKES THE PITTSBURGH PENGUINS, OR HOCKEY IN GENERAL, GREAT? Hockey is the best game on Earth and the Penguins are my team. I’ve loved them as a kid and still love them. There’s nothing like a hockey night.

LITTLE PENGUINS
LEARN TO PLAY By Ashley Roseman and Heather Schrecengost
Once again, Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins teamed up to run their eighth successful season of the Little Penguins Learn to Play program. Founded in September 2008, the objective is to increase youth hockey participation among children ages 4-8 by providing free hockey equipment to registered participants throughout Western Pennsylvania. “The goal is to continue to create opportunities for more kids in the Pittsburgh area to take up hockey. With the Little Penguins program, they can receive head-to-toe hockey equipment and learn the game in a fun and organized way,” says Crosby. The goal is to lessen the financial burden parents experience in order to introduce their children to the sport. Since 2008-09, over 6,000 children have received free head-to-toe hockey equipment and learned how to play hockey thanks to the combined efforts of Crosby, the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Penguins Foundation, CCM, and DICK’S Sporting Goods. The Little Penguins program has even expanded lately. For the first time, the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex will be hosting the Little Penguins program. The facility has hosted many youth hockey events since it opened in the summer of 2015, but is extremely excited to be a part of this growing program. This year, registration took place on November 3, 2015, with many locations selling out within just minutes. Rinks and coaches alike all over Western Pennsylvania are preparing for another successful Little Penguins season. If you missed registration, be sure to check out the Little Penguins program next year so your child doesn’t miss out on this unforgettable experience.

PENGUINS PROFILE
JEFF
ZATKOFF By: Mark Madden
28
“They also serve, who sit and wait.” And wait. And wait. And wait. John Milton wasn’t thinking of backup goaltenders when he authored the passage quoted. But the sentiment certainly applies to Jeff Zatkoff. The Penguins’ No. 2 goalie got nailed to the bench by a quirky schedule that didn’t see the Penguins play on back-to-back days until Oct. 28-29. That allowed coach Mike Johnston to use Marc-Andre Fleury between the pipes for nine straight games. Zatkoff got his first start of the campaign Oct. 29 against Buffalo at CONSOL Energy Center. Zatkoff was ready. He had to be. The Sabres welcomed Zatkoff to the 2015-16 season by peppering him with 53 shots. Zatkoff made 50 saves as the Penguins won, 4-3. When was the last time Zatkoff made 50 saves? “It’s been a while,” he said, laughing. “I haven’t done that in a significant amount of time. It’s just nice to get in there and be able to contribute.” Actually, Zatkoff had never made 50 saves in a game at the NHL level. His previous high was 42, set March 6, 2014 when the Penguins lost 5-3 at San Jose. The Detroit native followed up his yeoman’s duty vs. Buffalo by stopping 27 pucks in a 2-1 victory at Edmonton on Nov. 6. Zatkoff’s win over Buffalo was an interesting affair. He conceded twice in the first period as the Sabres rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to forge a 2-2 deadlock by the first intermission. But Zatkoff bunkered in after that, making 18 saves in the second period and 23 in the third. “I had a lot of run support,” Zatkoff joked, referring to the Penguins’ four goals, a season high to that point. “I took all of [Fleury’s] goals. He’d been winning, 2-1. But I’ll take the four goals. “It took me about a period to get familiar with the screens. In practice, you don’t have that many guys: Your defensive corps, your forwards and their forwards, in and out, and you’re trying to track the puck. “After the first period, I felt a lot more comfortable. I settled in. Things were going a little faster in the first, but we came out with a tie, and we won it from there.” The third period provided some anxious moments, especially when Matt Moulson cut Buffalo’s deficit to 4-3 with 2:36 left and the Penguins’ Kris Letang took a delay of game penalty with 1:51 continued on page 31

left, affording the Sabres a 6-on-4 power play with the goaltender pulled. But Zatkoff made the stops, and the Pens survived. “We knew they were going to throw everything at us in the third,” said Zatkoff. “A lot of us played for [ex-Penguins and current Buffalo coach Dan Bylsma]. We know how he coaches when they’re down: D pinching down the wall, and they put a good push on. We had a two-goal cushion and they got one, but the PK did a good job at the end.” Zatkoff minimized the level of pressure he faced: “They had a lot of shots, but a lot from the outside. Not a ton of Grade A, and the guys blocked shots at big times.” So, when will Zatkoff play next? It’s not something he wonders extensively about. “It just depends on how taxing the schedule is for [Fleury],” said Zatkoff. “He’s used to a big workload. Obviously, I want to play as much as possible. But I just wait for my turn. I don’t look too far ahead. I’ll be ready when my name is called.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN
Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, has been co-owner of the Penguins since 1999. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including nine straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past eight years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open CONSOL Energy Center in August, 2010. The facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. The Penguins ownership group, local labor organizations and members of the Pittsburgh business community honored Lemieux in 2012 with a statue to commemorate his career and contributions to the city and the region. Appropriately named “Le Magnifique,” the statue, by nationally-acclaimed sculptor Bruce Wolfe, can be seen outside the Trib Total Media gate at CONSOL Energy Center. RON BURKLE CO-OWNER
Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in technology, retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, has been co-owner of the Penguins for 16 years. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they became one of the most outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. The Penguins reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009 and won the Cup in ‘09. The team’s ownership has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign many of the team’s young core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year — leading to nine straight playoff berths, and three appearances in the conference finals in the past eight years. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award. DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT
David Morehouse is chief executive officer and president of the Penguins, overseeing all aspects of the team’s operation. The Penguins have become one of the NHL’s strongest business entities during his tenure — selling out every game for eight-plus seasons, setting new standards for corporate sales and television ratings and increasing their focus on innovative youth marketing. Morehouse joined the team as a consultant on the arena project in 2004 and was named team president in April 2007. He was given the additional responsibilities of chief executive officer in August 2010. Under his leadership, the Penguins have reshaped their strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, community interaction, corporate outreach and cutting-edge technology. Beyond that, the Penguins have led all U.S.-based NHL teams in local television ratings for six-straight seasons and rank among the league leaders in social media followers, website traffic and merchandise sales. A strong commitment to fan outreach includes an annual event where players personally deliver season tickets to fans’ homes and a special preseason game were all 18,000 tickets are distributed free to local youth. Morehouse also was a driving force behind the new UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, which opened in August. It is the first facility to combine hockey with a world-class medical center and sports performance complex. Morehouse joined the Penguins following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill — as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

JIM RUTHERFORD
EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT & GENERAL MANAGER
Jim Rutherford is in his second season as executive vice president and general manager of the Penguins. During his first year, the Penguins qualified for their ninth-consecutive postseason berth despite playing a majority of the final two months without arguably the team’s top-three defensemen. Rutherford spent the previous 20 years as GM of the Carolina Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers franchise from 1994-2014 where he was a key architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team. In addition to his general manager duties, he also served 20 years as president of Carolina/Hartford, taking the post in 1994. In his role as president/GM, Rutherford oversaw operations on both the hockey and business sides of the organization. He helped spearhead the efforts to bring the 2004 NHL Draft and 2011 NHL All-Star Game to Raleigh. Whether it’s listening in on coach Mike Johnston’s pregame speech, hearing mic’d up Penguins players talking on the bench or traveling to Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, with Sidney Crosby as he trains for the upcoming season, In The Room delivers unique, unprecedented coverage of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The show has won back-to-back Emmy Awards as the best sports series in the Mid-Atlantic region in both 2014 and 2015. “The idea of doing our own show developed because of the success of HBO’s 24/7 Road to the Winter Classic in 2010-11,” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse. “We got a lot of positive feedback from our fans about the unbelievable access to players and coaches. With In The Room, we can continue to show fans a side of the team they’ve never seen before.”

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS 6.6K RUN AND FAMILY WALK PRESENTED BY CONSOL Energy
A GREAT SUCCESS On October 4, nearly 5,000 participants and 400 volunteers helped kick-off the Penguins 2015-16 season at the 2015 Pittsburgh Penguins 6.6K Run and Family Walk presented by CONSOL Energy. The 6.6K Run (4.1 miles) and One-Mile Walk both started at CONSOL Energy Center on Fifth Avenue at 8:30 am. The 6.6K crossed two bridges, ran through the Armstrong Tunnel and returned to finish on Centre Avenue at the Mario Lemieux statue. All participants received a commemorative medal for completing the race or walk. Following the race, the Penguins held an open practice at CONSOL Energy Center for all of the event’s participants and volunteers. Proceeds from the event benefit the cancer research and patient care initiatives of the Mario Lemieux Foundation and the youth initiatives of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. Thanks and appreciation are extended to all fans who supported the Pittsburgh Penguins 6.6K Run and Family Walk presented by CONSOL Energy!

GONCHAR NAMED COACH OF PENGUINS DEFENSEMEN DEVLEOPMENT By Sam Kasan
Former NHL defenseman Sergei Gonchar gave one final shot to keep his career alive when he signed with Pittsburgh for a training camp tryout contract. Though he didn’t make the team, the Penguins approached the 41-year-old Gonchar about another role with the team — on the side of management. “After it didn’t work out in training camp, [Penguins general manager] Jim [Rutherford] approached me and asked me to think about working for them,” Gonchar told me. “I took some time and made a decision that I wanted to be a part of this club. Gonchar, who enjoyed a stellar 20-year NHL career that saw him record 811 regular-season points (220G-591A) — the most among Russian-born blueliners in NHL history — will be the team’s defensemen development coach, working with the team’s blueliners at the NHL level and throughout the system. He will also scout European tournaments for the team. “They have a younger group of guys and he asked me to help them to develop them,” Gonchar said. “With my experience I think it’s good for both sides.” Gonchar is still beloved by Penguins fans for his role in bringing the Cup to Pittsburgh in 2009. He spent five years in this city, which were some of his best seasons — helping lead the Penguins to a Stanley Cup championship in ‘09 and a Cup Final appearance in ’08 — and is a close personal friend of All-Star center Evgeni Malkin. In 322 career regular-season games with Pittsburgh, Gonchar totaled 54 goals, 205 assists and 259 points, the sixth-highest point total among defensemen in franchise history. Only Larry Murphy and Kris Letang have amassed more postseason points than Gonchar’s 44 (7G-37A). During his final four seasons with Pittsburgh, Gonchar served as one of the club’s alternate captains. So in a way, this is a return home. “I’m excited to be a part of the Pittsburgh Penguins organization,” Gonchar said. “I want to do something in hockey. I’m really happy that it’s Pittsburgh.”

THE RUSH Introduced in the mid 1990’s, the Pittsburgh Penguins Student Rush Program is one of the most popular and well known marketing initiatives of the team. Designed to sell remaining game day inventory, the Student Rush program provides the Pittsburgh Penguins an opportunity to introduce new fans to the game of hockey at a discounted rate. With many past Student Rush participants now attending games as Pittsburgh Penguins Season Ticket Holders, the program has been successful in developing a long-term relationship with young, active Pittsburghers. During the 2015-16 season, an estimated 200 Student Rush tickets will be made available for each regular season home game at CONSOL Energy Center. Eligible students have access to purchase these tickets through an exclusive, day of game, online pre-sale. To receive pre-sale information, students can text RUSH to 32623 to register for the Student Rush Mobile Club. Each pre-game text also includes the opportunity to win two free tickets to the next home game! In addition to the 200 tickets offered each game, several games have been designated special Student Rush nights. For these games, at least 500 tickets will be available online! For more information on the Pittsburgh Penguins Student Rush program, the terms and conditions and a schedule of special Student Rush nights, scan the code at the top of the page or visit pittsburghpenguins.com/studentrush. HOCKEY
ETIQUETTE 101 Our goal? To create an awesome game experience for all fans! Help make that happen by remembering the following: 1.
DO NOT ENTER OR EXIT THE SEATING AREA DURING PLAY! Hockey is fast — and goals can be missed in an instant. Fans moving through rows and up aisles can block the view of an entire seating area. Wait until the whistle blows to make your move. HINT #1: The red light above the penalty boxes is lit for TV timeouts. TV timeouts occur at the first whistle stops inside the 14:00, 10:00, and 6:00 minute mark of each period, EXCEPT following an icing call or goal. When the light comes on, this is your chance to make a dash to the restroom or your seats!
T:8.5”
B:8.75”
S:7.5”
HINT #2: The concourse TVs now feature a countdown clock during the intermissions, smart huh? Thank the season ticket holders for recommending this awesome idea! 2.
NO LEANING! We know you are into the game, but leaning creates a ripple effect, affecting the view of the fans in the rows behind you. Sit back so all can enjoy the game!
3.
KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE PUCK! Pucks can hurt when they enter the seating area!
4.
CONSOL Energy Center is a non-smoking facility; smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, is prohibited.
5.
It’s hard to like fans of the opposing team, we get it. However, we think it is pretty cool that they chose to come to our building. Be aware of children sitting around you and let the guys on the ice do the talking!
6.
Cheer, clap and let the players know you are here! Hockey is the best sport to watch live — have fun!

MIKE LANGE
PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER
One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 41th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

Heads UP Pittsburgh is a first of its kind program that has served as the blueprint for other NHL and professional sports organizations since KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE its creation in 2010. Heads UP Pittsburgh is a partnership with UPMC Sports Medicine and funded by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. The purpose of the program is to reduce the amount of concussions in youth sports by providing free baseline concussion testing to young athletes, developing educational initiatives for athletes, parents, coaches, officials, teachers and pediatricians and finally support research projects. The results are quite impressive, since 2011 the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine have been able to: Baseline tests over 17,000 athletes, ages seven to 14 in 30 different sports Our staffs have educated over 45,000 people about concussions and sports related injuries 50,000 educational brochures were distributed at baseline test sites, pediatrician offices, schools and local rinks The Foundation funded over 4,000 neck strengthening kits with protocols to develop neck strength in young players From the neck strengthening program 500+ athletes became involved in a concussion research project Addressing other sport injuries the Foundation provided 3,000 free Duraband flexibility kits Next year we will introduce a new pediatric version of the baseline test targeted at seven to nine year-old players. Through your support of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation events we continue to grow our programs dealing with physical well-being for the young people of our region. For more information about Heads UP Pittsburgh and testing locations, visit our website at pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org.

COLE THRIVING
IN PITTSBURGH By: Joseph Guzy
Of the trade that brought Ian Cole to the Pittsburgh Penguins on March 2 from the St. Louis Blues, the defenseman said, “It was a bit of a surprise, I guess. The color change was different from blue to black.” The comment earned Cole a few chuckles from local media huddled around his locker room stall. He’s certainly earned a few more thanks to some memorable moments with fans. The 26-year-old defenseman has been more than happy to snap a few selfies on numerous occasions. Headshot day with the team’s Twitter mirror, selfie stick giveaway night and while working a shift at a local Dunkin’ Donuts, to name a few. Cole is quickly turning into a fan favorite. “I don’t know about that,” Cole said with a smile. “You just try to connect with the people of the city.” Being an athlete in Pittsburgh, as Cole has learned, comes with a very special connection with the fans. “I was very fortunate to be part of a great city and great culture in St. Louis,” Cole said. “But coming here to Pittsburgh, it’s everything I experienced in St. Louis times ten. continued on page 131

“Just a city full of people that really cares about the team and the players doing well. Ask any other black and gold team — from the Steelers to the Pirates to us, there’s just a lot of love for all of their teams. It’s such a big part of the city’s culture that it really makes it a lot of fun to play here.” The next-level fans of Pittsburgh came with a next-level role on the ice. The budding blueliner was forced to step up during the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs with both Kris Letang and Christian Ehrhoff sidelined. Cole went on to average 23 minutes a night while skating a team-high 30.4 shifts per game. However, Cole isn’t filling that role for Letang this season. He’s sharing it. Blocking 31 shots in 14 games (which has Cole ranked third in the league for the statistic as of Nov. 9) while averaging over 21 minutes of ice time — which is over five minutes more than his career average — the 6-foot-1, 219-pound defenseman is certainly helping out his new defensive partner. “[Cole] has got a hard shot,” Letang said. “He’s good to play with — pretty skilled, pretty patient with the puck. He likes to make good plays. “He’s a vocal guy too. He comes to the bench and wants to make sure everyone is on the same page. It’s been a good experience so far.” Cole shares that sentiment with Letang. “I’ve been getting the puck more,” Cole joked. “It’s been great. We are playing really good quality minutes. While the

minutes grow larger you don’t want the quality to change.” No matter the role, Cole has always focused on playing his best hockey. “We had quite a log jam in St. Louis,” Cole said. “I still worked a lot to the point where I honed the skills to play in these situations. All of that work came to fruition here in Pittsburgh and I had a great opportunity. It’s been a great situation and it’s worked out really well.” Penguins’ brass certainly took note of the Ann Arbor, Michigan native’s quality of play since he first donned the black and gold, signing Cole to a three-year contract on June 29. “You never really know how all the contract stuff is going to work out,” Cole said. “It’s something you try to put out of your mind and just play hockey as best you can. “I knew my contract was up so I was kind of hoping that [a contract extension] would be the case. Signing a three-year deal obviously worked out great.” Greatness is what exactly Cole sees in the city of Pittsburgh as well. Though he can’t seem to narrow it down to his favorite part. “That’s really tough,” he hesitated. “Really, that’s tough. I don’t know if I can say one thing. “One of the coolest things was getting out there for opening night, walking the red carpet, seeing all of the fans and just being out there for opening night. The atmosphere was electric.” An increase in the crowd’s voltage could be felt when Cole’s name was announced on opening night, both on the red carpet and inside CONSOL Energy Center. Definitely a fan favorite.

CHANGES TO THE GAME By: Ryan J. Harr
As part of its never-ending quest to ice the best product possible, the National Hockey League continues to insert new rules to improve the quality of play, while at the same time making the game safer for its players. This season, some of the major rule changes rolled out by the NHL include three-on-three overtime, a coach’s challenge and expanded video review. Since being drafted into the league as a 19-year-old out of St. Cloud State in 1996, Matt Cullen has seen his share of changes to the NHL. He says the changes have drastically improved the game it is today. “I think the NHL along with the NHLPA is working just as hard as any of the other professional sports to make the game safer,” said Cullen. “The only problem they are having is that the ice area has not changed. While ice is still the same, the speed of the game has gotten much faster and players are bigger, stronger and faster.” There have been nearly 25 rules changes since Cullen has started playing professional hockey. But the 39-year-old veteran said that that the league simply enforcing rules already in place have helped improve the game as much as the tweaks. “Coming out of the lockout year in 2004-05, the biggest change was to enforce the rules more than ever. When the referees started calling the holding, hooking and other stick fouls that we see being called in todays’ game, it did wonders for the sport. That is actually the biggest change in my books.” continued on page 144
143
continued from page 143
In addition to enforcing the rules, the ’05-06 season brought about several drastic changes all built around adding more offense to the game. New rules implemented were the elimination of the two-line pass, the addition of the goalie restricted area behind the goal line and the creation of the shootout following the four-on-four overtime period (prior to this year’s change). “The game has sped up so much, as speed along with skill is paramount in the league,” Cullen explained. “Before it used to be the fifth and sixth defensemen were the big, strong and tough guys, but might not have been the best skaters on the ice or could not handle the puck as well as other guys. Now these guys are flying up and down the ice as everyone now more than ever has the skill and ability because the game has become such a skilled game. But that is what it should be, and it is fun to watch.” As it will be interesting to see where the changes take place next, Cullen has no disagreements with the rule changes or where the league is headed. “The game is in a really good place, as every aspect is the game has improved for the better, so it is not only better for the fans but us players as well.” SOME NHL RULES CHANGES SINCE THE 1998-99 SEASON: 1998-99 Offensive zone expanded by four feet 1999-00 4-on-4 overtime for five minutes 2003-04 Goaltender pads can be a maximum of 38 inches in length 2005-06 Elimination of the two-line pass; goalie restriction area added; shootout added if the game is tied after 4-on-4 OT 2010-11 Any hit to the head results in a penalty; boarding defenseless player results in penalty 2013-14 Hybrid icing installed; all players with 25 games played or less must wear visors; goalie pads can only be a maximum of nine inches above the knee 2014-15 Trapezoid area expanded by two feet; teams switch ends of ice for OT; full dry scrape prior to OT (later removed midway through season) 2015-16 3-on-3 for five minutes followed by shootout if necessary; shovel of ice prior to OT; coach’s challenge on goalie interference and offside calls

ICEBURGH Iceburgh, the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins, has been entertaining hockey fans worldwide since 1992. As one of the Penguins’ most popular ambassadors, not to mention one of the NHL’s most beloved mascots, you can find Iceburgh leading cheers, beating drums and dancing in the aisles at every Penguins home game, attending major hockey events around the world, visiting local schools, or just spending time at area hospitals and community events. Iceburgh has even been asked to be a guest of honor at numerous wedding celebrations in recent years! There’s no doubt about it, Iceburgh is one busy Penguin! In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture Sudden Death. He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. Last season, during his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game in Columbus, Iceburgh helped the Eastern Conference mascots defeat the Western Conference by scoring two goals and two assists in the first annual NHL Mascot Showdown while also emerging victorious in the mascot dance competition. To request an Iceburgh appearance at your next community or special event, please complete the online request form by visiting pittsburghpenguins. com and selecting “Iceburgh” under the “Fan Zone” section.

UPWARD TREND By: Mike Prisuta
They returned from an engagement with the Flames one win shy of a clean sweep through Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary. Even though their six-game winning streak had been snapped, the Penguins were clearly trending in the right direction. Consider: The power play was a woeful 2-for-31 through the season’s first nine games, but emerged from a 5-2 loss to the Flames on Nov. 7 having connected at least once in five straight outings (5-for-13). “I just like the way they’re shooting,” head coach Mike Johnston said. “They’re getting the puck to the net.” The penalty kill returned home having snuffed out 32 of the last 33 man-advantage opportunities for opponents, including 12 of 13 since the 2015-16 debut of center Eric Fehr. “Having played on the power play before in the past, it’s difficult when the killers keep coming after you and they don’t let you set up,” Fehr said. “I think that’s what we’ve tried to do, chase them up the ice and force them to move pucks.” Fehr produced the added bonus of scoring a short-handed goal in each of his first two games with the Penguins (Oct. 31 at Toronto and Nov. 4 at Vancouver), becoming the first player in NHL history to pull that off in his first two games with a team. continued on page 157

“We’re not expecting to score every night but we want to make them make good plays and force the puck out of their hands,” Fehr continued. “You just want to play the right way and play hard and battle hard. Instead of thinking about scoring just think about creating chances and being on the right side of pucks. “I’ve watched them, obviously [prior to making his injurydelayed first appearance in a Penguins’ uniform]. The guys are staying on the same page. We’re going up the ice together. We’re staying in the D-zone together. We’re moving the puck around well. We’re not taking unnecessary chances and we’re picking our spots. “There are a lot of good power plays in this league. We’re just trying to do our best to keep them off the board.” Sidney Crosby had yet to regain his scoring touch on a consistent basis, but the Penguins’ captain returned from Calgary having produced at least a point in three of his last five games (1+3), and having gotten onto the score sheet in back-to-back games for the first time this season (a goal on Nov. 4 at Vancouver and an assist on Nov. 6 at Edmonton). Crosby had managed just three points in the Penguins’ first nine games, all in a 3-2 overtime win over Florida on Oct. 20. continued on page 158
157
continued from page 157
“I think I just need to find a little more consistency,” Crosby said. “There have been games I’ve had a lot of chances, just haven’t put ‘em in. There have been other games where I haven’t generated a lot. I need to make sure that I’m generating more and I think the points will come. “I’m pretty confident I can still play and I’m not too old. I don’t feel banged up. I feel really healthy and strong.” The Penguins have been a strong defensive team all season, to the extent that they emerged from having allowed a seasonhigh five goals in Calgary with the NHL’s third-best goals-against average (2.00 through 14 games). Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury’s play in the early going has been such that he actually saw his goals-against average rise after allowing two goals on Nov. 4 in Vancouver (a 3-2 win). Fleury’s goals-against average was at 1.93 after the Calgary game. Johnston attributed the success in that department this season, in part, to the approach heading into the postseason last season. “I thought we played very well defensively last year and ‘Flower’ had some really good numbers for us,” Johnston said. “He had a very good season. He started off with a good season this year. Your goaltending is a big part of that. Your penalty kill is a big part of that for goals against. “And the way we played the Rangers series, because we were short-staffed last year [due to injuries] we knew we had to play it tight. And I thought our defensive habits were really ingrained at that time. I’m pleased with our start defensively.”
