AROUND THE NHL By: Mike Prisuta
RISING TO THE OCCASION: Florida C Brandon Pirri became the first player in NHL history to score a goal on a penalty shot and a shootout-deciding goal in the same game when he did so in a 5-4 shootout win on Nov. 14 at Tampa Bay. Pirri also became just the second player to score on a penalty shot and in a shootout in the same game. Current Panthers LW Jussi Jokinen had done so for Dallas on March 7, 2006.
10
MAKING IT COUNT: Detroit C Andreas Athanasiou’s first NHL goal also stood as his first game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory on Nov. 10 over Washington. Athanasiou became the fourth player in Red Wings’ history who scored his first goal in a 1-0 win, joining Frank Fredrickson (1926-27), Connie Brown (1938-39) and Steve Black (1949-50).
ALL OR NOTHING: Tampa Bay’s 8-8-3 record through 19 games included a record of 5-0-0 when leading after two periods and a 0-6-0 mark when trailing after two. Shootouts also hadn’t been kind to the Lightning. They lost their first two games that went that far and went a combined 0-for-6 on shootout attempts in the process.
DYNAMIC DUO: Blues
FRESHMEN SENSATIONS: Arizona had an NHL-leading 34 points from rookies through 17 games, including 15 from LW Max Domi (8+7) and 10 from LW Anthony Duclair (7+3). The combined total from those two was more than the rookie total for any other NHL team.

C David Backes picked up seven penalty minutes in a 4-2 loss to Chicago on Nov. 14 and went over 900 PIM for his career in the
process. That made Backes the second player since he entered the NHL in 2006-07 to eclipse 400 career points and 900 career PIM (421-901), along with Scott Hartnell (439-1,121). Only Brian Sutter (636-1,786) had reached those two milestones previously in St. Louis history.

On Nov. 21 the Penguins host the San Jose Sharks, the third game of Pittsburgh’s four-game homestand that features exclusively Western Conference opponents. The Penguins are 4-0-2 in their last six home games against the Sharks, their last regulation loss here to San Jose coming almost 14 years ago on Jan. 30, 2002 (3-6). THE SERIES [VS] BLUES
On Nov. 25, Thanksgiving Eve, the Penguins play host to the St. Louis Blues, against whom they’ve lost five of their last seven meetings (2-2-3). Six of the last seven games between the teams have been decided by one goal, and four of those were decided after regulation — with the Blues winning three times in overtime. . . The last of those was a 3-2 St. Louis win here last March 24, when Alex Steen scored 35 seconds into overtime. The Penguins earned a 4-2 win in St. Louis last season. . . This is the 140th all-time regular-season meeting between the teams, with Pittsburgh holding a 51-65-5 mark with 18 ties. . . St. Louis has scored first in eight of the last 12 meetings. . . Pittsburgh won 10 of 12 games between Oct. 15 and Nov. 11, a stretch which concluded with a 4-3 shootout win here over Montreal. Crosby had two assists and a shootout goal in that game. . . David Perron also had a shootout goal in that game, making him four-for-six with the Penguins. At that point he had started each of Pittsburgh’s last three shootout wins with a goal from the No. 1 slot. . . Through the first 17 games this season, the Penguins had the NHL’s sixth-best penalty killing mark (85.7%). . . Phil Kessel led Pittsburgh with six goals at that point, three of those coming on the power play. . . Rob Scuderi and Olli Maatta were both a team-leading plus-8 at that point. . . Jeff Zatkoff won each of his first two decisions in goal for the Penguins this season before falling in New Jersey on Nov. 14.

Patty and John at CONSOL Energy Center.
First Season as a Penguins Season Ticket Holder: 2014
WITH WHOM DO YOU ATTEND PENGUINS HOME GAMES? I usually go with my spouse, John, who took me to my first hockey game in 1972. Otherwise, I will take my daughter, niece or a co-worker. PAST OR PRESENT, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE IN-GAME ENTERTAINMENT FEATURE? My favorite thing ever about Patty with her husband John, attending games was when they daughter Kelli and family used to bring the real life Penguins dog Cleopatra. mascot, Slapshot, onto the ice. Nowadays, I’d say watching Iceburgh slide down the rails at CONSOL Energy Center. I’d love to try that! WHAT LESSER KNOWN PENGUINS PLAYER (PAST OR PRESENT) HAS LEFT A LASTING IMPRESSION ON YOU? WHAT DID HE DO TO MAKE THAT IMPRESSION? Jean Pronovost! I loved his style of skating, his tenacity on the ice and his skill. I actually got to meet him at a gas station in Carnegie where he was filming a commercial with Myron Cope and Pierre LaRouche. Proney, of course, was awesome and posed for a picture with me and flashed that big smile.

WHAT IS THE MOST UNIQUE KEEPSAKE IN YOUR PERSONAL COLLECTION OF PENGUINS MEMORABILIA? For sure that picture of me and Proney, but I also have a Jimmy Rutherford t-shirt in the attic somewhere too. I silk-screened it myself as a Patty’s daughter, Kelli, with her new graphic arts project while I husband, Jim. The newlyweds just was in high school. I think married on October 31! my teacher was not only impressed with my project, but that a teenage girl was a hockey fan! WHAT PENGUINS RELATED STORY DO YOU RETELL MOST OFTEN? The one about how my husband, who was my high school sweetheart at the time, created the Penguins hockey monster that I am today by taking me to my first hockey game back in 1972. It was a playoff game against the Blackhawks that went into overtime. We lost, but I was hooked. My husband loved playing street hockey as a kid and I think it sealed the deal, as far as me being the one for him, after I fell in love with hockey during that first game together. DO YOU REMEMBER WHERE YOU WERE WHEN THE PENGUINS WON THE CUP IN ‘91, ‘92 OR ‘09? For the ’91 Cup, we were watching the game at my parents’ house, screaming and hugging each other when the final horn sounded. We jumped into the car with my sister and her beau to try to get to the airport to cheer for the team as they got off the plane, but we never got close enough. For the ’92 Cup, we watched at home while our five-year-old daughter slept. A little more subdued celebration, but nonetheless as jubilant. The 2009 Cup was really special for us, because our daughter, who was quite the Crosby fan by then, was able to comprehend the enormity of the Penguins winning a third Cup and celebrate it too. Sharing the joy of the win with her made this memorable. Our daughter’s birthday is 6/6/87… Lemieux and Crosby. What could be better than that?

DISCOVER YOUTH HOCKEY By Ashley Roseman and Heather Schrecengost
Try Hockey for Free, presented by KraftHeinz at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex was a success! On November 7, over 50 youth were introduced to the sport of hockey, many for the first time. Participants were fitted head-to-toe in brand new hockey equipment and headed to the ice. With the help of the Pens Elite and the Slippery Rock University Men’s Ice Hockey team, young hockey players recieved one-on-one coaching to learn how to skate and learn the fundamentals of hockey. The clinic is designed to develop skills, endurance, balance, and strength, all while having fun. Two sessions were held at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, the first one being for all girls. After their session was over, participants were able to keep their USA Hockey Jersey and were given a certificate for participating in the event. The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex wasn’t the only association to take part in Try Hockey for Free. Over 500 local associations across the country hosted this event on November 7. These locations encourage kids ages four to nine to come try youth hockey as part of the Come Play Hockey month. Over the past five seasons, USA Hockey has introduced over 100,000 children to the sport through Try Hockey for Free. Try Hockey for Free events encourage teamwork and fun with stations and drills that create a unique atmosphere for these new hockey players. There will be future opportunities for your children to participate in Try Hockey for Free. A second event will be taking place on Saturday, February 20, 2016 during Hockey Weekend Across America.

PENGUINS PROFILE
PATRIC
HORNQVIST By: Mark Madden
28
For a while, right winger Patric Hornqvist was doing less: Just two goals in his first 14 games, and a demotion to the third line. So, Hornqvist decided to do more. It was just that simple. Not easy, but simple. The 5-foot-11, 189-pound Swede amped up what he does best: Dominating near the foe’s blue paint. Too close to the net for the opposition’s comfort. The result was two goals in two games and an intense presence that benefited the whole team. Hornqvist scored the game-tying goal with 6:25 left in regulation against visiting Montreal on Nov. 11, spurring the Penguins to a 4-3 shootout win. Hornqvist scored with 58 seconds remaining two nights later, cutting Columbus’ lead to 2-1 at CONSOL Energy Center. Then, Hornqvist appeared to tie the game with 13 seconds left, but it was ruled that he kicked the puck into the net and his goal was disallowed. It was a good call. But it was also a great effort by Hornqvist, who battles every shift. Hornqvist has no problem skating on the third line with center Nick Bonino and left wing Chris Kunitz. “I think we do a really good job down low,” said Hornqvist after the win over Montreal. “We lost a few pucks, but we were battling down in the corners, and took the puck to the net. We need to keep building on that. “Me and Kunitz like to get on the forecheck and make them defend down low. Nick is a really smart player in the middle and can make good plays.” The win over Montreal was impressive on several levels: The Canadiens entered the game with the NHL’s best record, and the Penguins came into the contest with a 37-game losing streak when trailing after 40 minutes. The Pens also played an excellent third period after being out-shot, 13-1, in the second period. “We looked each other in the eye and said, ‘Boys, this is not good enough. We need to play with more heart,’ ” is how Hornqvist described the scene in the Penguins’ dressing room after the second period. “We can’t play like that in front of our fans: One shot on net and probably 20 turnovers in the neutral zone. That can’t happen. “We came back really hard in the third, and that’s all that matters now.” continued on page 31
29
continued from page 29
The Penguins out-shot Montreal 17-10 in the final 20 minutes. The Penguins trailed by just 3-2 entering the third period despite having such a terrible second stanza. “We have a 20-minute game out there,” said Hornqvist. “It’s one goal, in our rink. We know we have [Marc-Andre Fleury] back there, and he made some really good saves. Just get back to basics and working hard.” Hornqvist’s tying goal was exquisite. Sidney Crosby made a great pass from the right boards to Hornqvist cutting over the red line. Hornqvist barreled to the top of the offensive zone’s left circle before unleashing a wrister over the glove of Montreal goalie Mike Condon to put the score level at 3-3. “Sid made a really good pass there,” Hornqvist said. “He’s a great player, and he can make those plays. Chipping it into the middle, and we get a two-on-one. The D took away the pass, so I had to shoot it, and it went in. “[The win] means a lot for our group. We haven’t really played our best through the first 15 games, but we’re still winning games. Like today, we played good for two periods and we beat the best team in the league.” Hornqvist joined the Penguins before last season, coming to Pittsburgh in a trade that sent winger James Neal to Nashville. He had 25 goals and 26 assists in 64 games during his first campaign as a member of the Penguins, posting a mark of plus-12. Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN
Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, has been co-owner of the Penguins since 1999. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including nine straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past eight years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open CONSOL Energy Center in August, 2010. The facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. The Penguins ownership group, local labor organizations and members of the Pittsburgh business community honored Lemieux in 2012 with a statue to commemorate his career and contributions to the city and the region. Appropriately named “Le Magnifique,” the statue, by nationally-acclaimed sculptor Bruce Wolfe, can be seen outside the Trib Total Media gate at CONSOL Energy Center. RON BURKLE CO-OWNER
Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in technology, retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, has been co-owner of the Penguins for 16 years. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they became one of the most outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. The Penguins reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009 and won the Cup in ‘09. The team’s ownership has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign many of the team’s young core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year — leading to nine straight playoff berths, and three appearances in the conference finals in the past eight years. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT
David Morehouse is chief executive officer and president of the Penguins, overseeing all aspects of the team’s operation. The Penguins have become one of the NHL’s strongest business entities during his tenure — selling out every game for eight-plus seasons, setting new standards for corporate sales and television ratings and increasing their focus on innovative youth marketing. Morehouse joined the team as a consultant on the arena project in 2004 and was named team president in April 2007. He was given the additional responsibilities of chief executive officer in August 2010. Under his leadership, the Penguins have reshaped their strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, community interaction, corporate outreach and cutting-edge technology. Beyond that, the Penguins have led all U.S.-based NHL teams in local television ratings for six-straight seasons and rank among the league leaders in social media followers, website traffic and merchandise sales. A strong commitment to fan outreach includes an annual event where players personally deliver season tickets to fans’ homes and a special preseason game were all 18,000 tickets are distributed free to local youth. Morehouse also was a driving force behind the new UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, which opened in August. It is the first facility to combine hockey with a world-class medical center and sports performance complex. Morehouse joined the Penguins following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill — as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

JIM RUTHERFORD
EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT & GENERAL MANAGER
Jim Rutherford is in his second season as executive vice president and general manager of the Penguins. During his first year, the Penguins qualified for their ninth-consecutive postseason berth despite playing a majority of the final two months without arguably the team’s top-three defensemen. Rutherford spent the previous 20 years as GM of the Carolina Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers franchise from 1994-2014 where he was a key architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team. In addition to his general manager duties, he also served 20 years as president of Carolina/Hartford, taking the post in 1994. In his role as president/GM, Rutherford oversaw operations on both the hockey and business sides of the organization. He helped spearhead the efforts to bring the 2004 NHL Draft and 2011 NHL All-Star Game to Raleigh. Over the course of his executive career, Rutherford has won multiple awards, including The Hockey News‘ Executive of the Year in 2002 and ’06. Additionally, he was voted by his NHL general management peers as Sporting News Executive of the Year in 2006. Before his 21 years in the NHL, Rutherford was recognized as the 1987 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Executive of the Year, and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Executive of the Year in back-to-back years with the Windsor Spitfires in 1987 and ’88. He oversaw a Spitfires team that won the OHL championship in 1988 and earned a berth in the Memorial Cup. In addition to his time with Hartford/Carolina, Rutherford also spent over 30 years working with Compuware Sports Corporation, overseeing the purchase of Windsor in 1984 and bringing the first American-based OHL franchise to Detroit in 1989. Rutherford played 13 years as a goaltender in the NHL, appearing in 457 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit. Selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round (10th overall) in the 1969 NHL Draft, he represented Canada at the 1977 and ’79 World Championships.

Whether it’s listening in on coach Mike Johnston’s pregame speech, hearing mic’d up Penguins players talking on the bench or traveling to Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, with Sidney Crosby as he trains for the upcoming season, In The Room delivers unique, unprecedented coverage of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The show has won back-to-back Emmy Awards as the best sports series in the Mid-Atlantic region in both 2014 and 2015. “The idea of doing our own show developed because of the success of HBO’s 24/7 Road to the Winter Classic in 2010-11,” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse. “We got a lot of positive feedback from our fans about the unbelievable access to players and coaches. With In The Room, we can continue to show fans a side of the team they’ve never seen before.”

BRIGHTEN
THE HOLIDAYS By: Joseph Guzy
The Penguins kicked-off their vast array of holiday initiatives in the community on November 16, with the players’ eighth Annual Thanksgiving Turkey Distribution at the Hill House Kaufmann Center in Pittsburgh’s Hill District. Phil Kessel, Jeff Zatkoff, Matt Cullen, Nick Bonino and Ian Cole distributed frozen turkeys and all the fixings for a bountiful Thanksgiving meal to over 100 families at the event. The distribution was held in partnership with the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. All families were pre-selected and contacted by food bank officials. In addition, the team held its annual Score Against Hunger Food Collection before the Penguins vs. Colorado game on November 19. Monetary donations collected at the drive were used to purchase the turkeys and holiday meals that were distributed earlier that week. Penguins’ holiday initiatives benefitting local charities will include the annual USMC Toys for Tots toy collection on Dec. 11 and Dec. 14, a Stuff-A-Bus online collection via the Penguins Foundation, the team’s annual holiday visit to Children’s Hospital, the annual Penguins Wives Holiday Online Auction, the team’s Adopt a Family for the Holidays program and the Operation Shoebox program benefitting a local senior care facility.

COACHES, EXECUTIVES FROM
FINNISH ICE HOCKEY ASSOCIATION VISIT PITTSBURGH By Joseph Guzy
Executives and coaches from the Finnish Ice Hockey Association visited Pittsburgh earlier this month, taking tours of both the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex and CONSOL Energy Center. “We’ve been working with USA Hockey for a year now,” explained Pyry Lukkarila, who is a FIHA coach and regional U-16 development coach. “We had USA Hockey managers that were visiting Finland last February. They wanted to come in and see what we do in Finland. Now we’re kind of returning the favor and coming here, seeing what they do here.” Lukkarila and the rest of his staff were certainly blown away. “Seeing the new [UPMC Lemiuex Sports Complex], that’s probably the best complex in the world right now,” he said. “I’m so happy for the kids playing here that they have a place like that, and they have great coaches working there. It’s a good place to play hockey when you’re young in Pittsburgh.” Like many do in Pittsburgh, budding hockey players in Finland start young as well. They start training with the Finland Lions hockey school at six years old and go from there. Finland currently has 38,000 youth players, and Lukkarila is certainly pleased with their progression. “Last season we had 26 skaters and nine goalies in the NHL,” Lukkarila said. “That’s fairly good for the size of our nation.” One of those players is the Penguins’ own Olli Maatta. Maatta and the FIHA staff had some time to catch up after the Penguins morning skate on Nov. 13 heading into their game against Columbus. “We were just talking about old moments in U-16, Team Finland and some of the old moments where they were coaching me,” Maatta said. “It’s always nice to see them. It means a lot that they’re here for the game.” It is certainly special for Lukkarila and the rest of the FIHA to see one of their own succeed at the highest level. But it certainly isn’t a surprise. “I didn’t have any doubts,” Lukkarlia said. “I had the chance to coach him when he was 12 years old. He was a great kid growing up.”

PENGUINS DEVELOPING AMATEUR
HOCKEY PLAYERS AT UPMC LEMIEUX SPORTS COMPLEX By Joseph Guzy
The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry isn’t just the new practice rink of the Penguins. The young hockey players in Pittsburgh are the real owners of this first-class facility. “Everybody thinks it’s just for the Penguins,” said Matt Herr, Executive Director of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. “But anyone can come here and sign up. You can come here and work with our staff. Then you can go into the weight room and train with Gary Roberts. Then maybe next year you can even play for Penguins Elite.” The creation of the player pool for Penguins Elite, Western Pennsylvania’s premier AAA amateur hockey organization, also comes from the new facility with the Penguins Mite skating and skills program. “The Mite development program is four to six-year-olds and then six to eight-year-olds,” Herr said. “And all those players can all play on Penguins Elite.” The facility has so much more to offer in addition to the Mite Development League. They also have the Penguins Hockey School, which offers year-round leagues, camps and clinics. Power skating clinics are run by Max Ivanov, a well-known power skating instructor and skill development coach who works with Evgeni Malkin. Ty Hennes, a former standout player for Boston College, leads the skills sessions. And goalie training for players of all levels are run by Mike Chiasson, a former QMJHL goalie with the Rimouski Oceanic who played four years at Acadia University in Nova Scotia. continued on page 95

All in all, the goal is to produce better hockey players. According to Herr, the most important part of their development program is pushing kids to take their own path. “We want these kids to be able to go on their own and be able to develop their own game while having fun,” Herr said. “You watch all the great players, the guys that are creative and can score. “Half of Sidney Crosby’s skill is his thinking of the game. We want to encourage that with all of our players that come through here.” Perhaps the best place for young hockey players to do that is at the GNC Skills Development Center inside the facility. Herr calls it the “Dave and Buster’s of hockey.” It features a RapidShot system referred to as “the batting cage for hockey players,” three RapidHands puck-handling training stations and a 60-foot resistance skating lane. “Kids have their swipe card with $20.00 on it, and Mom can sit and drink a latte while reading her book in the lobby and the kid can stickhandle and shoot,” Herr said. “It’s a key component because our big theme is that we can work with you all you want but in the end, you have to take ownership of your development.” For more information on all of these programs, visit UPMCLemieuxSportsComplex.com

HOCKEY
ETIQUETTE 101 Our goal? To create an awesome game experience for all fans! Help make that happen by remembering the following: 1.
DO NOT ENTER OR EXIT THE SEATING AREA DURING PLAY! Hockey is fast — and goals can be missed in an instant. Fans moving through rows and up aisles can block the view of an entire seating area. Wait until the whistle blows to make your move. HINT #1: The red light above the penalty boxes is lit for TV timeouts. TV timeouts occur at the first whistle stops inside the 14:00, 10:00, and 6:00 minute mark of each period, EXCEPT following an icing call or goal. When the light comes on, this is your chance to make a dash to the restroom or your seats!
T:8.5”
B:8.75”
S:7.5”
HINT #2: The concourse TVs now feature a countdown clock during the intermissions, smart huh? Thank the season ticket holders for recommending this awesome idea! 2.
NO LEANING! We know you are into the game, but leaning creates a ripple effect, affecting the view of the fans in the rows behind you. Sit back so all can enjoy the game!
3.
KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE PUCK! Pucks can hurt when they enter the seating area!
4.
CONSOL Energy Center is a non-smoking facility; smoking of any kind, including e-cigarettes, is prohibited.
5.
It’s hard to like fans of the opposing team, we get it. However, we think it is pretty cool that they chose to come to our building. Be aware of children sitting around you and let the guys on the ice do the talking!
6.
Cheer, clap and let the players know you are here! Hockey is the best sport to watch live — have fun!

Heads UP Pittsburgh is a first of its kind program that has served as the blueprint for other NHL and professional sports organizations since KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE its creation in 2010. Heads UP Pittsburgh is a partnership with UPMC Sports Medicine and funded by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. The purpose of the program is to reduce the amount of concussions in youth sports by providing free baseline concussion testing to young athletes, developing educational initiatives for athletes, parents, coaches, officials, teachers and pediatricians and finally support research projects. The results are quite impressive, since 2011 the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine have been able to: Baseline tests over 17,000 athletes, ages seven to 14 in 30 different sports Our staffs have educated over 45,000 people about concussions and sports related injuries 50,000 educational brochures were distributed at baseline test sites, pediatrician offices, schools and local rinks The Foundation funded over 4,000 neck strengthening kits with protocols to develop neck strength in young players From the neck strengthening program 500+ athletes became involved in a concussion research project Addressing other sport injuries the Foundation provided 3,000 free Duraband flexibility kits Next year we will introduce a new pediatric version of the baseline test targeted at seven to nine year-old players. Through your support of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation events we continue to grow our programs dealing with physical well-being for the young people of our region. SOLID, STEADY DUMOULIN
IMPRESSING ON BLUE LINE By: Joseph Guzy
Brian Dumoulin was in the midst of playing some of the best hockey of his career last season, his third with the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League. Dumoulin led the team’s defense in scoring with 33 points and ranked fourth in the AHL with a plus-25 rating. Meanwhile, in Pittsburgh, the Penguins had lost three of their top defensemen to injury as Kris Letang and Christian Ehrhoff were sidelined with concussions and Olli Maatta was out for the season with a shoulder injury. So Dumoulin got the call. But it wasn’t just for a few regularseason games to reward his outstanding play in the AHL — it was a call that led the young defensemen to the Stanley Cup playoffs, where he made his debut in Game One of the First Round against the New York Rangers. “I was just thrown in there,” said Dumoulin, who had played just 14 career NHL games before getting the call-up. “I didn’t really have time to think about it. The coaches just told me to go out there and play hockey.” continued on page 131

Dumoulin, then 23, didn’t just go out and play hockey. He played the best hockey he could — the kind of hockey he was playing down in Wilkes-Barre. Playing an average of 14:06 minutes a night in the Penguins’ five postseason contests, Dumoulin was the only defenseman to finish with a positive plus-minus. “I felt like the one thing that helped me play well in the playoffs was just going out there, not thinking and just having fun,” Dumoulin said. “I think that’s the kind of attitude I’ve tried to take this year also.” It’s certainly working. After signing a two-year, one-way deal during the offseason, Dumoulin reported to Pittsburgh and has since become arguably the Penguins’ most consistent defender through the first quarter of the season. Through the first 17 games of the season, Dumoulin was only on the ice for only three goals against — the least of all Penguins defenseman — and has been playing with a lot of confidence. “Dumoulin has played great defensively,” head coach Mike Johnston said. “He’s a hard guy to beat 1-on-1. He has grade-A position all of the time.” The key to his success? The Biddeford, Maine native points to the stall of his defensive partner. “Ben Lovejoy is a really great guy to play with,” Dumoulin said. “He keeps it simple and after playing with him for the past few games, I know what he’s going to do. He’s going to make that simple play and that helps me as a defenseman, knowing that I don’t have to worry about his mistakes because he really doesn’t make any.” continued on page 132

Lovejoy shared the sentiment. “I think we’ve gotten very comfortable with one another,” Lovejoy said. “We both are trying to keep it simple and we know what our role is right now. We know we’re playing against some of the best players in the league who can make you look stupid. “Neither of us have any sort of cheat in our game for offense. We’re both trying to get up the ice to be a second wave.” On the team’s Western Canada road trip to face the Vancouver Canucks, Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames, a white jersey with the No. 8 could be seen joining the rush, battling down low and looking to score more often than not. They’re a comfortable pair for sure, but to literally leave your partner behind you? “I think a lot of times I know he’s going right up to that winger so I don’t have to worry about him coming with me,” Dumoulin said. “I can get up ice and try and create something on the rush.” “It’s one of the things he’s done incredibly well,” Lovejoy said. “It’s such a special attribute for a young defenseman. He’s not cheating. Every time he takes advantage of getting up in the play it’s at the proper time when he doesn’t have to cheat for pucks.” Goaltender Jeff Zatkoff trusted Dumoulin to play in front of him long before his NHL debut. They’ve spent two seasons in WilkesBarre/Scranton together and Zatkoff is hardly shocked by the level at which his teammate is playing through 17 games. “It doesn’t surprise me at all,” said Zatkoff while shaking his head in astonishment. “He did the same exact thing in WilkesBarre that he’s doing here now. He was one our best defensemen down there and he’s been awesome up here.” He doesn’t see any sign of him stopping either. “I think it’s evident in his game,” Zatkoff said. “He stepped right up and hasn’t missed a beat.”

LONG WAIT PAYS OFF FOR FEHR By: Ryan J. Harr
As the calendar sat a mere days from flipping to August, the Pittsburgh Penguins were still searching in their quest to add size and secondary scoring to the lineup. Luckily for them, 6-foot-4 Eric Fehr, who scored 19 goals and 33 points as a third-line center for the Washington Capitals in 2014-15, sat on the market looking for a team. While some clubs might have been scared off by Fehr’s June 3 elbow surgery, the Penguins were more than eager to have the versatile forward dot the ‘I’ on a three-year deal during the late morning hours on July 28. “I was very excited after signing the deal,” Fehr said. “There are a lot of skilled hockey players within this organization. I am very familiar with this team after playing against them the last several years. I thought there was a good chance to win the [Stanley] Cup.” Fehr’s recovery from elbow surgery forced him to miss the entire preseason and the first 10 games of the regular season. When he was finally given the okay to make his Pittsburgh debut on Oct. 31 in Toronto, he made an immediate impact. Fehr scored a shorthanded goal against the Maple Leafs, then added an assist on a Matt Cullen goal, to all but ice an eventual 4-0 Pittsburgh victory, the fourth win in the club’s season-long sixgame winning streak. Four nights later in Vancouver, Fehr notched another shorthanded goal — the game-winning marker — to become the first player in NHL history to score a shorthanded goal in each of his first two games with a team. continued on page 144

continued from page 143
“Not being cleared for the first month was a longer wait than I had hoped,” Fehr said. “But at the same time, the doctors and trainers had a plan for the rehabilitation process. They made sure I was fully healthy when I did come back. Once cleared, I felt stronger than prior to the surgery, so I was ready to contribute. Obviously their plan worked.” Part of that plan was Fehr beginning the season on long-term injured reserve. That meant his debut had to wait until Oct. 31 because the rules mandated that he miss either the first 10 games or the first 24 days of the season, whichever came first. As a result, Fehr had to sit out the Penguins’ first encounter with the Capitals on Oct. 28 at the Verizon Center. A first-round selection by Washington (18th overall) in 2003, Fehr was bummed to miss going up against his former teammates, but that will only make the next matchup on Dec. 14 that much more special. “It will be a great opportunity when the time comes,” said Fehr. “The guys here in Pittsburgh are great, just like they were in Washington. There will be an extra motivational factor, but you still have to stick to the game plan and do what you are coached.” Until then, Fehr and his family will continue assimilating to their new surroundings. “The city has been great so far,” Fehr said. “CONSOL Energy Center and the rink in Cranberry [UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex] are first-class. My family and I have really enjoyed the area so far.”
The city has been great so far. Eric Fehr

ICEBURGH Iceburgh, the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins, has been entertaining hockey fans worldwide since 1992. As one of the Penguins’ most popular ambassadors, not to mention one of the NHL’s most beloved mascots, you can find Iceburgh leading cheers, beating drums and dancing in the aisles at every Penguins home game, attending major hockey events around the world, visiting local schools, or just spending time at area hospitals and community events. Iceburgh has even been asked to be a guest of honor at numerous wedding celebrations in recent years! There’s no doubt about it, Iceburgh is one busy Penguin! In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture Sudden Death. He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. Last season, during his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game in Columbus, Iceburgh helped the Eastern Conference mascots defeat the Western Conference by scoring two goals and two assists in the first annual NHL Mascot Showdown while also emerging victorious in the mascot dance competition. To request an Iceburgh appearance at your next community or special event, please complete the online request form by visiting pittsburghpenguins. com and selecting “Iceburgh” under the “Fan Zone” section.

VICTORIES CAN RESONATE By: Mike Prisuta
Wins in the National Hockey League’s regular season are worth two points and only two no matter the manner in which they are achieved. A relatively matter-of-fact 4-0 shutout in Toronto counts the same in the standings as a 2-1 overtime thriller in Nashville. But that said, there are victories that can resonate. And the Penguins are of the belief that their 4-3 shootout decision on Nov. 11 against Montreal may well turn out to be the type of game they can draw upon down the road. The Penguins trailed the NHL-leading Canadiens 3-2 after 40 minutes but rallied to win for the first time in their last 38 such decisions. It had been since Jan. 5, 2014 that the Penguins had won a game they had trailed entering the third period. And to the Penguins that meant something. “In talking about it as a team we talked about the next time we’re in that situation there’s an opportunity there,” head coach Mike Johnston explained. “In Calgary we missed it. We didn’t come back in the Calgary game. But every game that’s been our goal, ‘OK, let’s seize this opportunity. We’re down here now, let’s do things the right way and come back in this game.’” continued on page 157

The Penguins had trailed the Flames 4-2 after 40 minutes on Nov. 7 at Calgary and had wound up on the wrong end of a 5-2 final. But the very next time they had an opportunity to snap their 0-31-6 futility streak, they took full advantage. “The belief of coming back comes from games like this,” Johnston said after a Patric Hornqvist tally at 13:35 of the third period and then shootout goals by David Perron and Sidney Crosby had gotten the job done against Montreal. “So the next time we’re faced with a situation like that you can call upon, ‘Hey, remember how we played against Montreal in the third.’ So at least you have something to draw on that way.” It’s not an easy thing to achieve, to be certain, especially against a quality opponent. The Stanley Cup-champion Chicago Blackhawks went 6-18-2 in games they had trailed after two periods in the 2014-15 regular season. The Tampa Bay Lightning went 3-21-2 before eventually going on to oppose Chicago in last season’s Stanley Cup Final. The Blackhawks were better at rallying to win when down after two periods in the postseason but not a great deal better, continued on page 158

We played well, Still, the confidence played strong. inspired by being able to beat such odds on Marc-Andre Fleury occasion is genuine. The Penguins almost qualified for such a victory on Oct. 28 at Washington. They fell behind Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals 1-0 at 1:28 of the third period and then rallied to win, 3-1. But the streak remained intact since the game had been tied after two. The Penguins knew as much when they found themselves trailing the Canadiens with just 20 minutes left in regulation. Then they went out and did something about it. “We had a good talk after the second and we came out in the third as a team,” goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury said. “We played well, played strong.” Captain Sidney Crosby had no explanation as to why the Penguins went so long between rallying to win when down after two periods. “I don’t have a great reason for you,” Crosby admitted. But Crosby maintained the formula for such comebacks wasn’t a mystery, even as the Penguins were groping to put Crosby’s theory into practice. “You have to believe you can score goals in bunches,” Crosby said. “It’s gotta be a belief thing, whatever it takes to spark that, whether it’s a big shift to get momentum, a big hit. You need goals to get back in it but you definitely need some type of momentum shift when you’re down like that. “However you can get it is the most important thing.” The belief that can come from such a shift in momentum paying dividends is real, the Penguins suspect. Especially now that they can once again finally speak from experience on the subject.
