AROUND THE NHL Martin Brodeur’s current elbow injury, which is expected to sideline the future Hall of Fame netminder for at least two weeks, has thrust former Penguin Johan Hedberg into the No. 1 job during his absence. Hedberg has shined for New Jersey during Brodeur’s absence, posting a 3-1 record from Nov. 22-27. Johan Hedberg Hedberg’s hot stretch included a 30-save shutout of Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals on Nov. 22 and an outstanding 40-of-41 save effort in a 2-1 shootout win over Philadelphia on Nov. 27. “He’s really playing confident now and he’s under control,” Devils head coach John MacLean said of Hedberg. “It’s great for him. He’s a great person and a great teammate. We’re happy to see it.”

MODANO’S SEASON IN JEAPORDY The season of Red Wings’ forward Mike Modano is in jeopardy after the 40-year-old veteran underwent surgery on Nov. 27 to repair a severed tendon in his right wrist. Modano was injured when he was accidentally cut by the skate of Columbus forward R.J. Umberger on Nov. 26. No timetable for Modano’s return was provided by the Red Wings, although they did announce that the surgery was Mike Modano successful. Modano, who is in his first season with the Red Wings after spending 20 years with the Dallas Stars, hopes to be able to return in time for the postseason. Modano had two goals and eight points in 20 games prior to the injury.

THE RIGHT MOVE
8
Several eyebrows were raised when the Atlanta Thrashers announced during training camp that they were going to be moving offseason acquisition Dustin Byfuglien, one of the heroes during Chicago’s 2010 Stanley Cup march, from forward to defense. Sure, Byfuglien came to the National Hockey League as a defenseman, but his Dustin Byfuglien development the past few years had him being talked about among the league’s top power forwards. Thrashers head coach Craig Ramsay and general manager Rick Dudley are getting the last laugh as Byfuglien, 25, has not only thrived with the move, he has ranked among the NHL’s defensive scoring leaders the entire season. Byfuglien ranked third among NHL blueliners as of Nov. 28 with 21 points, with his eight goals pacing all defensemen. “To me, he’s got hands,” Ramsay told NHL.com. “He’s got a big body that battles and his enthusiasm makes up for lots — and playing with [Tobias Enstrom] probably doesn’t hurt him at all either because Toby’s got a great stick, tremendous composure, and together they’re a great pair because it’s vital.”

RON BURKLE Ron Burkle has now added a new arena — Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center — to his tremendous list of accomplishments in the business world. Burkle, widely recognized as one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 12th season as co-owner of the Penguins. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his role in negotiations for the new arena deal. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League and the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy. He has received numerous awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year and the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year award.
MARIO LEMIEUX Mario Lemieux will always be remembered for the magic he created on the ice, but one of the crowning achievements of his remarkable business career came this season — the opening of CONSOL Energy Center, home of the Penguins and Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue. Even before the reality of CONSOL Energy Center, Lemieux and coowner Ron Burkle had turned the Penguins into a premier NHL franchise. The Penguins have been named No. 1 in Fan Relations by ESPN the Magazine, sold out a team-record 166 straight games, sold out every suite for three straight seasons and established records for local television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits. Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVPs trophies and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP, in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $8 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario, his wife Nathalie and their four children live in Sewickley. For extended bios please visit pittsburghpenguins.com 10
DAVID MOREHOUSE Pittsburgh native David Morehouse was named CEO of the Penguins in September and leads the team into an exciting new era at CONSOL Energy Center. Morehouse had served as team president since 2007, overseeing ticket sales, marketing, corporate sales, communications and brand development, as well as representing the team in corporate relations and governmental affairs. Under his leadership the Penguins have become one of the top organizations in professional sports — ranked No. 1 in Fan Relations and No. 5 overall as a franchise among 122 pro teams in North America by ESPN The Magazine. As team president, Morehouse implemented a brand strategy that featured a new commitment to marketing, fan interaction and community outreach, as well as a targeted focus on the team’s young fan demographic. Morehouse grew up in the Beechview section on Pittsburgh. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University, and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Vanessa, have three children and live in Bell Acres. For extended bios please visit pittsburghpenguins.com

RAY SHERO Ray Shero, 48, was named GM of the Pittsburgh Penguins on May 25, 2006. His fresh ideas and calm but firm management style helped transform the Penguins from a team that did not qualify for the playoffs in 2005-06 to one that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2007-08 and won the Cup in 2008-09. One of his first acts as GM was to declare a goal of building a team that could compete for championships on a yearly basis. He revamped the team’s hockey operations staff and structure, upgraded professional and amateur scouting, added a team operations director and opened new lines of communication with the business side of the organization. Ray built his hockey sense and managerial style during 14 seasons as an NHL assistant general manager — six with the Ottawa Senators and eight with the Nashville Predators. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University and was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1982. He spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. The native of St. Paul, Minn. is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.

DAN BYLSMA In just one-plus seasons behind the bench, Dan Bylsma has already become one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history. After being promoted to Penguins head coach in February 2009, Bylsma, 40, directed the team to its third Stanley Cup in franchise history — a feat previously accomplished by legendary coaches “Badger” Bob Johnson and Scott Bowman. In the process Bylsma became the 14th rookie head coach, and just the fourth in the past 50 years, to capture the Stanley Cup. Of those 14, only Montreal’s Al MacNeil (1970-71) took over mid-season. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons as a right winger with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-2004. He played 429 NHL regular-season games, recording 19 goals and 62 points, and also played in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final with Anaheim. Bylsma was an assistant coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for two seasons from 2006-08 and was named head coach at the start of the 2008-09 season. He went 35-16-1-2 in 54 games with WB/S before being promoted to Pittsburgh. He played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son and reside in the North Hills.
TONY GRANATO Tony Granato, 46, begins his second season on the Penguins’ coaching staff. Granato, among his many responsibilities, works with the Penguins’ forwards and penalty killing units. He oversaw the NHL’s ninth-ranked penalty killing group with an 84.1-percent success rate, and second best on the road at 85.3 percent. Prior to joining the Penguins, Granato spent six seasons behind the bench for the Colorado Avalanche and served two stints as Avalanche head coach from 2002-04 and 2008-09. Granato compiled a 215-104-17-16 record and led Colorado to a Northwest Division title in 2003. Granato played 13 seasons in the NHL with the NY Rangers, Los Angeles and San Jose. In 1997, he was the recipient of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for overcoming a near career-ending brain injury. In 773 career games, the feisty forward posted 248 goals, 492 points and 1,425 penalty minutes. He appeared in 79 career postseason games and helped lead Los Angeles to a Stanley Cup Final berth in 1993. Granato played four years at the University of Wisconsin and was inducted into the Badgers’ Hall of Fame in 2000. Granato also played for the U.S. National team in 1987-88 and represented his country in the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary. Tony and his wife, Linda, are the parents of four children and reside in the South Hills. For extended bios please visit pittsburghpenguins.com 16

TODD REIRDEN Todd Reirden, 39, joined Pittsburgh’s coaching staff on July 31, 2010 after coaching with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins the previous two seasons. Reirden, an NHL defenseman for parts of five seasons, works closely with the team’s defensemen. Reirden, completed his first full season as WB/S head coach in 200910, leading a young and inexperienced team to an impressive 41-34-2-3 record, finishing third in the East Division, and a berth in the Calder Cup playoffs. Prior to joining the Penguins organization, Reirden spent one season as an assistant coach with the Bowling Green Falcons (CCHA) — his alma mater. He was a teammate of Bylsma’s during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons at Bowling Green. Selected by New Jersey in the 12th round (242nd overall) of the 1990 NHL Enrty Draft, Reirden played professionally for 13 seasons, retiring after the 2006-07 campaign with Graz EC of the Austrian Hockey League. He appeared in 183 NHL games with Edmonton, St. Louis, Atlanta and Phoenix, recording 46 points (11+35) and 181 penalty minutes. Todd and his wife, Shelby, have one son.
GILLES MELOCHE Former NHL goaltender Gilles Meloche is in his fifth season as the Penguins’ full-time goaltending coach and 25th with the organization. Meloche has been instrumental in developing Marc-Andre Fleury into a Stanley Cup-winning netminder. Meloche served as a Penguins scout from 1989-2006 and also doubled as a goaltending coach/consultant during much of that time. He was also part of the staff when the Penguins won Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992. A native of Montreal, Quebec, Meloche spent 18 seasons as an NHL goaltender with Chicago, California, Cleveland, Minnesota and Pittsburgh. He played the final three seasons of his career in Pittsburgh following a 1985 trade. Meloche appeared in 788 NHL games during his career, posting a record of 270-351-131 with a 3.64 goals-against average. In 45 career playoff games, he posted a 21-19 record and a 3.48 goals-against average. Gilles and his wife, Sophie, reside in Pittsburgh. His son, Eric, is a pro player who was a member of the Penguins organization from 2000-04.

OUR NEW HOME CONSOL Energy Center opened in August, 2010 as Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue — home of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins as well as other professional and collegiate sports, concerts, children’s shows, skating shows and more. It replaces the old Civic Arena/ Mellon Arena, which had operated since 1961 and was home of the Penguins from their inception in CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for 1967. It was the oldest arena in the the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins. National Hockey League. “CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins,” said David Morehouse, CEO of the hockey team. “With open concourses, comfortable seating, cutting-edge technology, a state-of-the-art scoreboard and sound system, and an extensive array of food and beverage options, it is a spectacular symbol for the Pittsburgh of the 21st century.” CONSOL Energy Center was completed on time and under budget, thanks to the combined efforts of architectural firms Populous and Astorino; the owner’s representative, ICON; the construction company, PJ Dick/Hunt; and the excellent construction workers and skilled trade workers of Western Pennsylvania. The new arena seats 18,087 for hockey, 19,000 for basketball and almost 20,000 for concerts. It is a green building and is the first NHL arena to attain LEED Gold certification. Even before its doors had opened, CONSOL Energy Center landed commitments from shows that would have bypassed the old arena — the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament first and second rounds, the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four, and back-to-back concerts by music legend Paul McCartney. McCartney, who first played Pittsburgh with the Beatles in 1964 but hadn’t performed here since 1990, christened the new arena with a grand opening concert on August 18, 2010. In its first season of operation, CONSOL Energy Center also will be home to the Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League — bringing indoor football back to the city for the first time in almost 20 years. A funding plan for the new arena project was completed in March, 2007, thanks to the combined efforts of Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, among others. The Sports & Exhibition Authority owns the building on behalf of the city and county, and the Penguins have the lease. The new arena is managed by SMG, with Jay Roberts serving as general manager.

COMMUNITY UPDATE PROVIDING A THANKSGIVING FEAST WITH A SMILE The Pittsburgh Penguins players assisted the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank in providing the fixings to make Thanksgiving a little warmer for 100 Hill District families. After practice on Tuesday, November 16, five Penguins players visited the Allequippa Terrace Community Center to distribute frozen turkeys and a variety of vegetables and fruit to disadvantaged families selected by the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. Max Talbot, Brooks Orpik, Alex Goligoski, Paul Martin and Deryk Engelland not only gave their time, they also provided people who rely on the Food Bank with much welcomed entertainment and laughs. Once the food was safely stowed in the bags of the Hill District residents, the players took time to sign autographs, pose for photographs, and talk with many of the families. This marked the fourth year that Penguins players have distributed items for Thanksgiving meals to community centers in the Hill District. This endeavor is made possible by fan donations at the team’s annual Food Collection which is traditionally held in early November. The generosity of our fans truly does make the holiday season a happier time for many local families.

TONIGHT’S COMPETITORS ARE:
QUARTER-FINALS HEAT ONE: ALLEGHENY BADGERS SQUIRT 4 VS. BUTLER VALLEY DAWGS SQUIRT 2 The one-on-one competition features Trent Lunden/Andrew Gorr from Allegheny against Will Meglio/Ben Studebaker from Butler Valley. You can also view this and previously shown competitions at pittsburghpenguins.com.
On Sunday, October 10, sixteen youth hockey teams from the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) in the Squirt age group (age 9 - 10) participated in a shootout competition at CONSOL Energy Center. The event was videotaped to be shown in episodes at Penguins home games. The first round of competition featured heats between two teams striving to advance to the next round. Sixteen teams fielded five skaters shooting against the opposing team’s goalie. After each team competition, an individual shooter and goaltender squared off against the opposing team’s individual tandem for a one-on-one competition. Each winning team and pair of individuals advanced to the next round of eight teams/tandems. The format repeated as teams and individual pairs advanced through the quarter-final heats to move on to the semi-finals. Robust competition marked the semi-final round for teams and individual tandems. The remaining two teams and individual tandems then had to “leave it all on the ice” in vying for the championship. Early in the second intermission of each Penguins home game the various heats in the competition will be featured. Enjoy each episode.

MIKE RUPP: GROWING UP A FOOTBALL FAN As a native of northeast Ohio — Cleveland, to be exact — Penguins winger Mike Rupp grew up a football fan. Why wouldn’t he? As a Cleveland Browns fan working and living for at least part of the year in Pittsburgh, Rupp has come up with a unique way to maintain the loyalties of his youth and still go along to get along in the here and now. He also roots, believe it or not, for the Steelers. “It’s kind of weird,” Rupp acknowledged. “I’ve kind of been disowned by my Cleveland friends for it, but I’m a casual Steelers fan, if that makes any sense. I live in Erie, and have for the last 10 years now, and that’s pretty much Steelers country. And the Browns for so many years haven’t had anything to root for after about Week Five, so I’ve tended to root for the Steelers. I like that brand of football.”
Mike Rupp brings a rugged attitude to his game every night.
Again, why wouldn’t he? The best description of the attitude Rupp brings to skating his wing every night is “rugged.” Why wouldn’t he appreciate the same type of approach on the gridiron, from the Browns and even from the Steelers? But Rupp doesn’t stop there. “On the same note, although it’s even more of an oxymoron, I like the Ravens, the way they play,” Rupp said. “The three teams that probably hate each other continued on page 47

the most, I like looking for those teams and watching them any time I can.” When Rupp attended his first football game the Ravens actually were the Browns. He can’t remember the opponent or the score but he remembers liking it, a lot. “I went to a game as a kid at old Cleveland [Municipal] Stadium,” Rupp recalled. “And then by the time I got to the age of wanting to go more often they didn’t have a team. And then I moved out of town to play hockey. But I’m always a Browns fan through and through and I’ve been following them for a long time. “I remember going to Cleveland Stadium, sitting up real high with my dad. And I remember the atmosphere, my dad kept covering my ears. And then I remember certain things happening where they were passing things down the whole section and guys were smokin’ and drinkin’. “It was an atmosphere where I was just kinda like ‘whoa,’ but it was cool to be there. That’s Browns football, that kind of toughnosed, rugged style. It was an experience.” Just as his appreciation for the Steelers has raised some issues with acquaintances back home, Rupp’s Cleveland heritage has
“THE THREE TEAMS THAT PROBABLY HATE EACH OTHER THE MOST, I LIKE LOOKING FOR THOSE TEAMS AND WATCHING THEM ANY TIME I CAN.” ~Mike Rupp
ruffled some feathers here in the home of the Penguins and Steelers. “A little bit,” he said. “But I have my Rashard Mendenhall jersey that I wore to game one this year against the Falcons. I’ll root for the Steelers, but when it’s Steelers-Browns it’s my Peyton Hillis jersey, for sure.” Rupp is already anticipating when he might get an opportunity to sport that No. 40 Hillis jersey at an actual sporting event. continued on page 48

Although he’ll be busy playing for the Penguins against the Capitals on Jan. 1 in the Winter Classic at Heinz Field, there’s a chance he might be afforded some time off the following afternoon. That would be the day the Steelers are scheduled to visit Cleveland for the BrownsSteelers rematch. “I haven’t been to the new stadium,” in Cleveland, Rupp said. “I don’t know what our schedule is for Jan. 2 but hopefully I’ll be able to swing that.” One thing Rupp probably won’t incorporate at the game in the event he attends and interacts with any Steelers fans is trash-talk. At least not until the Browns offer a little more inspiration along those lines. “If they get to .500 then I’ll be a little more excited,” Rupp said. “That Colt McCoy shows a lot of guts. But as an organization every time you think they’re turning the corner there’s a setback, so I won’t say anything right now.” As for tonight, Rupp figures to be busy along with the rest of the Penguins engaging the Atlanta Thrashers. But at least a part of his heart will be back in northeast Ohio watching the NBA’s Cavaliers host a rather high-profile opponent. That would be LeBron James of the Miami Heat. “I don’t care what he did but he didn’t handle it right,” Rupp said. “That’s the other

date that’s marked on my calendar.”
Rupp hopes to make his first visit to the Cleveland Browns Stadium on January 2 to see the Browns-Steelers rematch. Mike Prisuta is the sports director for WDVE-FM and the sports anchor for “Jim, Randy & the DVE Morning Show.”

I feel
.
Ask a grieving child how they’re feeling and you may get a lot of answers. Or none at all. For many, finding the words to express their feelings can be difficult. But while finding the right words may not be easy, finding the right place to turn to for help can be. At the Caring Place, we’re here when grieving children need someone to listen, to talk, or to just sit and be. For more information about one of our peer support groups or to volunteer, call us today.

The Pittsburgh Penguins were nearly unbeatable at the Civic Arena during the early portion of the 1995-96 season, owning a 9-2 record at their home rink prior to dropping the puck against the Montreal Canadiens on Dec. 7, 1995. However, picking up win No. 10 did not appear to be in the cards when the visiting Canadiens scored once in the first period and three more times within the first 14:17 of the second period to jump out to a commanding 4-0 lead. But if there was one thing the Penguins of the early ‘90s could do, it was fill up the net behind opposing goaltenders in a moment’s notice — especially with future Hall of Famers Mario Lemieux, Ron Francis and Jaromir Jagr comprising the roster. Lemieux, always impeccable with his timing, began the comeback charge by burying an unassisted goal behind Montreal netminder Pat Jablonski just 1:39 minutes after Turner Stevenson staked the Habs to a 4-0 lead. The Penguins and the home crowd built off the momentum Lemieux’s tally provided, as Tomas Sandstrom and Francis also scored to give the Penguins three goals within 1:43 to cut Montreal’s lead to 4-3 after 40 minutes. Tomas Sandstrom had two goals on the night to By the time the third period began, help the Penguins to a 7-5 win over the Canadiens. everyone had the sense it was only going to be a matter of time before the Penguins would do what seemed unthinkable about an hour earlier, and knot the game at 4-4. Finally, 6:17 into the final frame, and following great pressure by the Penguins to begin the period, Bryan Smolinski tied the contest by scoring his seventh goal of the season. The Penguins took a 5-4 lead six minutes later when Lemieux — who else? — beat Jablonski for his league-leading 25th goal of the season to give Pittsburgh a lead they would never relinquish. Francis and Sandstrom each added their second goals of the game later in the period to put an exclamation point on the Penguins’ comeback, before Montreal’s Valeri Bure added a meaningless goal with three seconds remaining to give the game its 7-5 final. Ken Wregget, who replaced an injured Tom Barrasso midway through the first period, picked up the win — the Penguins’ seventh in a row. Lemieux, who would go on to lead the NHL in both goals (69) and points (161) that season, extended his personal scoring streak to 10 games (9G-15A) with his two goals and an assist. Jagr, who had three assists, extended his scoring streak to 11 games (9G-13A).

PENGUINS EMBRACE HBO REALITY SHOW Penguins fans occasionally get a peek at what goes on behind the scenes, but throughout the month of December, HBO will give everyone an all-access pass to the life of a hockey player. “24/7 Penguins/ Capitals: Road to the Winter Classic” will follow both the Penguins and Washington Capitals on the ice, in the locker room, on the plane and in the workout rooms during the month leading up to the Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic on Jan. 1, 2011 at Heinz Field. “I think fans will get a better understanding as to what it takes to be a hockey player,” Matt Cooke said. “Some

people think we just go out and play games, but there’s a lot of stuff that goes on behind the scenes.” HBO’s crew visited practice in September and mid-November to shoot promotional footage, but they will start filming for the series in early December to lead up to the big game at Heinz Field on New Year’s Day. “We’re thrilled to be here,” said Mark Taffet, senior vice president of HBO Sports. “The team, every player, and the coaching staff have been so cooperative. Our work here is only as good as the time that the players and the team give us. And they have been completely unselfish.” NHL players are accustomed to cameras being around the locker room and the ice, but cameras following them 24/7 will be a new experience. “They call it 24/7 for a reason,” Taffet said. “We’ll be with the team 24/7, and we know it will take people up close and personal in a way that they’ll love and a way that the fans will appreciate.” continued on page 99

QUALITY IS ALL WE THINK ABOUT. THAT AND QUALITY.
THINK ABOUT IT. First, we pioneered the 10-year/100,000-mile warranty. Then, we led the way with Hyundai Assurance. Now, the EPA has just named Hyundai the most fuel-efficient carmaker in America.* Sure, it’s another important milestone reached, but it’s also a reminder to stay focused on whatever lies ahead. The show
will help bring out players’ personalities, something that isn’t always revealed in locker room media scrums. “Hopefully fans will get to know our team a little better as regular people as well,” Crosby said. “What we really hope is that we can take fans to places with these players and these teams where they haven’t been before,” Taffet said. “Even if they’re hockey fans, we want them to see some things they’ve never seen before.” “You’ll get to see what we put into it, the fun we have and the sacrifices we make,” Mike Rupp said. “It all leads up to a pretty awesome game on the first of January.” The fact that the Penguins are one of two teams that will represent the NHL in front of millions of viewers is not lost on Rupp, but it’s nothing new for the Penguins. “It’s a responsibility we have to carry,” he said. “But we carry it every day being a Pittsburgh Penguin.” HBO’s award-winning “24/7” franchise previously followed boxers leading up to big bouts, and its “Hard Knocks” series followed certain NFL teams through training camp. Some of the Penguins watched those shows and recognize the potential to showcase hockey. continued on page 103

“I watched ‘Hard Knocks’ and I understood more about football,” Max Talbot said. “Hopefully our show is going to bring more of the fringe fans. They are really going to see what is going on in a hockey locker room and behind the scenes. Hopefully that will make them like hockey even more.” “I’ve watched what they did with the boxers and I think it’s pretty cool,” Marc-Andre Fleury said. “I’m sure we’ll watch it to see how we look, and I’m sure there will be some good stuff.” Evgeni Malkin has always been a little bit shy in front of the camera. Yet he sees this as an opportunity. “It’s good for fans to see what I do in my life,” he said. “It’s tough on me because I’ll have to talk a lot to the cameras, but it’s a good idea. I like it because the Winter Classic is a dream to play in again.”
The series will give fans an inside-the-locker room look at the Penguins as they prepare to play on Jan. 1.
A 12-minute preview of the show aired in November, and replays of the preview will broadcast frequently leading up to Dec. 15, which is when the first of four episodes will air at 10 p.m. The program will also be available on demand and at HBO.com.

BLACKHAWK OUTLASTS CARRICK IN THE “BATTLE OF THE COUGARS” The Blackhawk Cougars withstood a third period charge from Carrick en route to a 4–1 victory on Nov. 19 at the Ice Castle in Castle Shannon. Forward Gino Morena struck first for the Carrick Cougars at 9:27 of the first period to give them the early 1-0 lead, but Blackhawk rallied by scoring the game’s next four goals to pick up the victory. Special teams played a significant role in the Blackhawk triumph over Carrick as their first two tallies came by way of the man-advantage. Christopher Levato notched the initial power-play marker for Blackhawk to tie the game at 1-1. Then, during a five-on-three opportunity, forward Jesse DiPietro cashed in late in the first period to give Blackhawk the 2-1 lead. “The power play has been coming together over the last few games and we had really good puck movement tonight,” Blackhawk head coach David Silverstein said. In addition, the Blackhawk penalty kill yielded only one goal on nine attempts with the extra man. “The PK was strong [tonight]. Although we did have a few clearing issues that fortunately did not affect the final score,” Silverstein added. Anchoring the Blackhawk penalty kill was netminder Ross Phipps, who turned aside 26 shots for the winning team. “He came up with the big saves when the team needed them — especially on the breakaway early in the third period that kept us up by two,” Silverstein said. “He has been strong all season.” Equally up to the task was Carrick goaltender Joshua Brown — who played exceptional in defeat as Blackhawk registered 42 shots on goal for the evening. Brown kept his team in the contest with key saves in periods two and three; however, his team could not capitalize on pivotal power-play chances late in the contest. Midway through their final power-play chance of the contest, Carrick pulled goaltender Brown in favor of an extra skater — to no avail. Later, forward Kyle Schafer added an even-strength, empty-net goal with 1:15 remaining in the third period to seal the deal for Blackhawk, 4-1. “We are still a work in progress and we’re taking steps to get better,” Silverstein said. “Overall, I’m happy with the team’s performance.”

SUCCESSFUL FIRST QUARTER FOR PENGUINS Before the puck was dropped on Oct. 7 to begin the 2010-11 National Hockey League regular season, everyone knew the fortunes of the Penguins’ season would be determined in large part by the performances of superstar captain Sidney Crosby and Stanley Cup-winning netminder Marc-Andre Fleury. Twenty-five games into the season, the play of Crosby and Fleury, particularly over the past three weeks, are two of the biggest reasons why the Penguins have the third-most points in the Eastern Conference with 32 (15-8-2) as of Nov. 29. Arguably the league’s best player from the first day he stepped onto a NHL ice surface in October 2005, Crosby, the reigning ‘Rocket’ Richard Trophy winner (most goals), has taken his game to yet another rarified level this season. With his team hovering around the .500 mark on Nov. 6 with a 6-7-1 record, Crosby put the Penguins on his back, leading the charge to a 9-1-1 run by recording at least a point in 12-consecutive games (12G-13A), his third-longest point streak of his career. On Nov. 26, Marc-Andre Fleury stopped a season-high Crosby’s scoring exploits not 43 shots in the 2-1 defeat of the Ottawa Senators. only catapulted his team back to the top of the standings, but they also moved him into a familiar position — leading the NHL scoring race. With 40 points (18G-22A) through his first 25 games — the best start of his NHL career — Crosby sat one point ahead of Tampa Bay’s Steven Stamkos in a race that figures to go back and forth the rest of the season. Last season, the two young sensations tied for the NHL goal-scoring lead with 51. While Crosby has performed at his all-world level throughout the first quarter, Fleury struggled at the outset of the campaign, winning just once in his first eight starts. But that rough start is way back in the rearview mirror now, as Fleury quickly ripped off an eight-game unbeaten streak (7-0-1) — tied for the fourth-longest unbeaten stretch of his career — to help Crosby lift the Penguins back to elite status. Fleury’s turnaround began when he became the seventh-youngest goaltender to win 150 games on Nov. 12 versus Tampa Bay and has included some spectacular performances along the way. In perhaps his best game of the season, Fleury stopped all 30 shots he faced, including several 10-bellers, in a 1-0 win at Buffalo the night before Thanksgiving. He followed continued on page 120

that up with a scintillating effort two days later at CONSOL Energy Center, stopping a season-high 43 shots in a 2-1 defeat of the Ottawa Senators. Like we mentioned above, numbers like those were expected from Crosby and Fleury. But as well as they have played, they needed help carrying the team. That’s where a pair of unsung heroes — Brent Johnson and Kris Letang — enter the picture. With Fleury struggling to find his game the first couple of weeks, the Penguins figured to be in trouble. However, that was never really the case thanks to a first two months Brent Johnson ranked among the league by Johnson that has him ranked leaders in both goals-against average (2.00, 6th) among the league’s leaders in and save percentage (.931, 5th) as of Nov. 29. several categories. Johnson, in his second year as Fleury’s backup, went on a 7-2-1 run to begin the 2010-11 season. Not only was Johnson racking up victories to help keep the team afloat, he was nearly unbeatable in doing so. In his nine starts, Johnson allowed two or fewer goals seven times, including a 33-save shutout at Carolina on Oct. 30. One of the three stars of the game almost nightly, Johnson ranked among the league leaders in both goals-against average (2.00, 6th) and save percentage (.931, 5th) as of Nov. 29. When the Penguins lost unrestricted free agent defenseman Sergei Gonchar to the Ottawa Senators on July 1, many wondered how the team would replace the offensive production Gonchar provided. Two months into the season we have our answer — 23-year-old budding superstar Letang. Always considered to have the potential to break out offensively, things have really come together for Letang in year four. Seeing action on the No. 1 power-play unit and earning top-line minutes has given Letang the chance to flourish at both ends of the rink as a legitimate No. 1 defenseman. He has taken full advantage of the opportunity, ranking third in the NHL among blueliners with 22 points (4G-18A) through the first 25 games. Not only has Letang posted high numbers, he has done so in a consistent manner, posting at least one point in 14 games and notching six multiple-point efforts. His improved offensive play has not come at the expense of his own zone, as Letang leads the Penguins with a plus-11 rating. It’s only a quarter of the season, as four-plus months still remain on the docket, but if the Penguins continue to get the same production from Crosby, Fleury, Johnson and Letang, in addition to the rest of the team, Pittsburgh will remain among the league’s elite teams heading into the 2011 postseason. 120

On January 1, 2008, in a game for the ages at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, NY, the Penguins and Sabres took to the great outdoors … and the NHL Winter Classic was born. A National Hockey League attendance record setting crowd of 71,217 witnessed as the Penguins prevailed, 2-1. Sidney Crosby’s shootout-winner amid the snowfall turned the final page on the game’s storybook ending. The success of the 2008 NHL Winter Classic led to it becoming an annual event played on New Year’s Day in a different NHL city. Here’s a summary of the matchups and locations for each game.

MY HOMETOWN: ZBYNEK MICHALEK
JINDRICHUV HRADEC, CZECH REPUBLIC
What was it like growing up in Jindrichuv Hradec? It’s a really small town. About 22,000 people live there. We actually live just outside the town in a small village. I grew up on a farm with my parents and my grandparents with all the animals. So I was growing up helping them out on the farm, and it was a lot of fun. When I started playing hockey, I went to the city every day and it kept me pretty busy. Where did you and your friends hang out? Usually we played hockey every day. If it wasn’t on the ice, we played ball hockey in front of the house in the street. Cars were going by and we had to stop for the cars. It was dangerous, but it was fun at the same time. We were out there every day, me and my brother and a lot of our neighbors. What’s something people might not know about your hometown? We have a really nice castle. It’s the second-biggest castle in the Czech Republic besides the one in Prague. It’s really beautiful. It’s really old and big. It’s right on the lake. What other sports did you play and watch growing up? We had soccer teams, basketball teams and volleyball teams. But probably soccer was my favorite. That’s the one sport that everybody plays growing up. We just went outside anywhere and played soccer. It’s an easy sport to play. You don’t need any equipment or anything, just a goal. We spent a lot of time playing soccer.

PENS PROFILE KRIS LETANG
THE CHOICE SEEMS CLEAR: VOTE LETANG. Defenseman Kris Letang doesn’t have a catchy campaign slogan. Heck, he’s not even on the ballot by which players get elected for the NHL All-Star Game on Jan. 30 at Raleigh, N.C. But Letang might beat the odds and win selection by achieving popularity the oldfashioned way: Playing great. The 23-year-old Montreal native is having a breakout season. After 23 games, Letang ranked fourth in scoring among NHL defensemen with four goals and 15 points. Such production placed him third on the Penguins; his plus-10 mark led the club. His play was not only effective but aggressive, too, more physical than years past. NHL fans noticed. When initial returns for All-Star Game balloting were announced, Letang was eighth among defenseman (and first among write-in candidates at that position) with 50,153 votes. Letang has buzz. His profile has increased. Letang’s humility remains, however. “It’s great right now to have those points. But I think I can play a better game overall,” Letang said. “I try to bring more than I used to bring. I’m more into the rushes. I try to support the attack when I have a chance, and it’s paid off so far. “But I’m looking for more. A better game defensively, too.” Letang isn’t the only Penguins defenseman who attacks: Alex Goligoski and Paul Martin each had 11 points after 23 games to rank sixth and seventh in team scoring, respectively. Kris Letang’s breakout season has made him a popular write-in candidate for the 2011 All-Star Game.
But Letang stressed that all continued on page 140
139
continued from page 139
the defensemen must pick their spots offensively. “I want to [attack],” Letang said. “A few of our defensemen are offensive-minded and like to join the rush every time. “But it isn’t just about when to join the rush. It’s about knowing when to pinch. Not getting caught deep in the [offensive] zone. Not getting in a bad position at a bad moment.” Score and situation must be considered, certainly. “When you’re up two goals and the play’s not there but you still try to make something happen, that’s when you get caught,” Letang said. Letang spoke from bitter experience: He made the latter comment Nov. 11, the day after the Penguins blew a 4-2 third-period lead and lost to Boston 7-4 at CONSOL Energy Center. “I’m pretty sure all the guys didn’t get much sleep,” Letang continued. “We saw the tape. We did good things. There were just some times in the game when we didn’t manage the puck well or make good decisions. Those mistakes ended up being in our net.” The lesson seemed learned: The Penguins went 6-0-1 over their next seven games. Considering his flourishing physicality, Letang said, “I don’t want to be just an offensive-minded defenseman. I want to be a two-way player that is really hard to play against. Every night I want to play against the other team’s top line and make things really difficult by being in their face, hitting them, and just really being active against them. “It’s something I take pride in doing. I’m looking forward to improving on that.” Letang’s skating is excellent. So is his agility. Letang has stymied many odd-man rushes by strategically sliding to break things up. “It’s timing,” said the 6-foot, 201-pounder. “It’s something we work on with [assistant coach] Todd Reirden. “On a two-on-one, you can take away [the puck-carrier’s] time and space and take the pass away at the same time.” Letang is part of the Penguins’ power play. He may not brag about that. As of Nov. 26, the Penguins man-advantage unit ranked 24th in the NHL with a conversion rate of 14.6 percent. “Even with the quality of players we have, I think we have to simplify,” Letang said. “We have to shoot the puck, and we have to always have a guy in the blue paint for screens and rebounds. We need to simplify things, and put it on net.” Letang wants to play well. But if he’s concerned about whether or not that results in a trip to the NHL All-Star Game, he does a great job hiding it. Letang didn’t know he was left off this year’s ballot; in fact, he seemed unaware that such a ballot exists. “I don’t really pay attention to those things,” Letang said. Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

AFTER 23 GAMES, LETANG RANKED FOURTH IN SCORING AMONG NHL DEFENSEMEN WITH FOUR GOALS AND 15 POINTS. 141
