GAME NOTES BY: BOB GROVE

THE SERIES

The Penguins open the 2013-14 regular season here tonight against the New Jersey Devils, a team that has won three straight games against Pittsburgh. The Penguins won the first game between the teams last season, a 5-1 home victory on Feb. 2 , but New Jersey outscored Pittsburgh, 9-4, while winning the final three games of the series. The Penguins scored just one even-strength goal in those three games. . . This is the third time Pittsburgh has opened a season by facing the Devils, and the Penguins failed to win either of the two previous such games — both played in New Jersey in 1982 (3-3) and 2005 (1-5). The former was the first NHL game for the Devils’ franchise, while the latter marked the NHL debut of Sidney Crosby. . . This is the third time New Jersey has provided the opposition for the Penguins’ home opener, with Pittsburgh earning a 7-4 win in 1990 and the Devils earning a 2-1 overtime win in 2008 on a goal by Zack Parise at 4:22. . . Under coach Dan Bylsma, the Penguins have lost more games to New Jersey (14) than any other team. . . Pittsburgh is 3-6-0 in its last nine games against the Devils and has been held to two or fewer goals in each of those six losses. . . Both teams have scored a power-play goal in three straight games in this series, the Penguins going 3-for-12 and the Devils going 4-for-14. . . The Penguins have scored first in eight of the last 11 games against New Jersey, continued on page 7

going 5-3-0 in those eight games. . . Pittsburgh is 6-2-0 in its last eight home games against the Devils, holding New Jersey to two or fewer goals in each of those six victories. . . The Devils have had only 10 power-play chances in their last six games here in Pittsburgh (2-for-10). . . Chris Kunitz led all Penguins with four points (1+3) in the series against New Jersey last season. Of the 10 goals scored by the Devils against Pittsburgh last season, six were scored by players no longer with the team: David Clarkson (3), Ilya Kovalchuk (2) and Bobby Butler (1). . . The next game between the teams is Nov. 16 in New Jersey, while the next meeting here is Dec. 13. . . Pittsburgh is 90-97-17-8 all-time against the Devils’ franchise, including 52-45-4-4 at home. THE PENGUINS

The Penguins are 20-19-6 all-time in season openers, including 9-9-4 when that season opener is played at home. They have won two straight season openers, beating Vancouver in 2011 (4-3 SO) and Philadelphia (3-1) in 2012 — both on the road. The Pittsburgh record for consecutive wins in season openers is seven, set from 1971 through 1977. . . Pittsburgh is 23-13-9 all-time in home openers but has won only four of its last 11 (4-5-2). . . Crosby is 20-25-45 in 39 career games against the Devils but has been held off the scoresheet in his last two games against them. Crosby has missed nine of the last 14 games against New Jersey. He has scored a goal in each of the last three home games he’s played against the Devils. . . Evgeni Malkin is 15+22 in 36 career games against New Jersey and has points in each of the last four home games he’s played against them (2+4). He has a goal in 10 of his continued on page 8

continued from page 7

17 career home games against the Devils. . . Marc-Andre Fleury is 7-5-0 in his last 12 decisions against the Devils, allowing a total of only nine goals in those seven victories. He is 6-1-0 in his last seven home starts against New Jersey. . . Fleury has won three of his last four head-to-head matchups with Martin Brodeur. . . The Penguins have a three-game homestand to begin the season for just the fourth time in their history. It also happened in 1969 (0-0-3), 1985 (1-2-0) and 2001 (0-3-0). . . Crosby is 2+3 in seven season openers, while Malkin is 2+3 in six openers. . . Crosby’s last point in an opener came in 2009, a goal here against the New York Rangers in a 3-1 victory. . . Matt D’Agostini had two goals and four points in 13 games with New Jersey last season after being acquired from St. Louis. . . The Penguins host Buffalo on Saturday and Carolina next Tuesday. THE DEVILS

Former Penguin Jaromir Jagr makes his New Jersey debut tonight, marking his seventh NHL team. Jagr has 21 goals and 41 points in 43 career games against Pittsburgh. . . The Devils have missed the playoffs in two of the last three seasons, and should they fail to qualify this season it will mark the first time they’ve missed in consecutive seasons since they made their first post-season appearance in 1988. . . Also new to the New Jersey roster this season are goaltender Cory Schneider and forwards Rostislav Olesz, Michael Ryder, Ryane Clowe and Damien Brunner. Brunner, who played in Detroit last season, signed a two-year, $5 million free agent contract with the Devils last week. . . New Jersey returns home to host the New York Islanders tomorrow night, then begins a five-game road trip in Edmonton on Monday. The Devils play eight of their first 11 games on the road. . . Martin Brodeur is 46-28-1 in 82 career appearances against Pittsburgh. Schneider, acquired from Vancouver in the off-season, has never faced the Penguins. 8

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 15th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including seven straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past six years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Known as Le Magnifique, Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario and his wife, Nathalie, and their four children live in Sewickley. For full bios, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

RON BURKLE CO-OWNER

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 15th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for six-plus seasons. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/ Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award. DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT

David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Penguins, overseeing every aspect of the team’s operations. Since Morehouse was named President in April, 2007, the Penguins have reshaped their image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010. He reports directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. An emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.based NHL, NBA and MLB teams in local television ratings during the 2012-13 season. The Penguins’ rating of 12.66 was the highest achieved by any U.S.-based NHL, NBA or MLB team on a regional sports network since 2002. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins led all U.S.-based NHL teams in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales. Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of the organization’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids ages 5-7 each year. The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He and his wife, Vanessa, have four children and live in Sewickley Heights.

RAY SHERO

EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT & GENERAL MANAGER

Ray Shero has established himself as one of the premiere NHL general managers during his tenure with the Penguins. Shero, an active member with USA Hockey and a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group, will serve as associate general manager for Team USA at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Shero, who is in his eighth season as Pittsburgh’s GM, has transformed a franchise that missed the playoffs from 2002-06 into a perennial championship contender, including two Stanley Cup Final appearances and a Cup title in 2009. Shero, who was named general manager of the Penguins in May, 2006, arrived with a firm, forward-thinking managerial style that incorporates cutting-edge methods of technology, player relations, prospect development and salary cap management. Shero cut his administrative teeth during 14 seasons as an assistant general manager with the Nashville Predators (1998-06) and Ottawa Senators (1993-98). Shero, a native of St. Paul, Minn., was raised in a hockey family filled with tradition. His father, Hall of Famer Fred Shero, played for the NY Rangers (1947-50) and coached the Philadelphia Flyers for seven seasons. Fred and Ray Shero are one of the few father-son tandems to have their names on the Cup. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. He twice led the team in scoring and was named team captain on two occasions. He graduated in 1984 as one of the top-10 scorers in school history. Shero, who was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1982 NHL Draft, spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 37, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins; his responsibilities included salary cap management, professional and amateur scouting and overseeing prospect development. His avant-garde approach and understanding of the salary cap has been a major asset for the Penguins. Before joining the Pittsburgh organization, Botterill worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars. He also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in 1994, ‘95 and ‘96 and won gold medals in all three tournaments. Following his playing career, he returned to the University of Michigan to earn his MBA. Jason and his wife, Andrea, and their daughter, Alisa, reside in Pittsburgh.

DAN BYLSMA HEAD COACH

Dan Bylsma is already one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history, leading the team to a Stanley Cup championship, winning the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s Most Outstanding Coach, and an Atlantic Division title in just four-plus seasons behind the bench. The Grand Haven, Mich. native will be Team USA’s head coach at the 2014 Winter Olympics Games in Sochi, Russia. Bylsma has led the Penguins to three 100-point seasons and five consecutive playoff berths, while becoming the winningest playoff coach in team history with 36 postseason victories and seven playoff series victories. continued on page 45

43

continued from page 43

Bylsma has the best regular-season winning percentage (.669) in team history with an all-time record of 201-93-25. His 201 wins are the second most in team history (Eddie Johnston, 232). In 2008-09, Bylsma penned one of the most remarkable starts to a head coaching career in NHL history. He began the season in his first head coaching job, with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League, and finished the year by raising the Stanley Cup. It has been Dan Bylsma’s dream to represent USA Hockey ever since he watched the United States win gold in 1980s “Miracle on Ice” as a 9-year-old boy growing up in western Michigan. And while Bylsma was not able to wear his country’s red, white and blue as a player, he will get the opportunity now as a coach — on the biggest international stage. Bylsma will be the head coach of the 2014 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team that will participate in the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, realizing a goal and an aspiration he has had for many years — 34, to be exact. “I can only come short on how it feels,” Bylsma said. “Really excited about the opportunity. I think as each moment passes, I’m more and more honored about the opportunity to wear the red, white and blue and to be the head coach of this hockey team and going over to Russia to win a gold medal. “I really think that the Olympic Games is such a special event for every athlete in every sport. So to be able to compete in the

Olympics, to be able to go over and compete for a gold medal, has been a dream for a long time. And as I became a coach and had eyed the U.S. team and that opportunity as a head coach, to have that now, just really looking forward to the opportunity and the honor to be a part of Team USA.” Bylsma has already achieved so much in his coaching career at just 42 years old, as he led the Penguins to the 2009 Stanley Cup in his first season behind the bench, captured the 2011 Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s Most Outstanding Coach and is overall one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history. And Bylsma’s involvement with USA Hockey has grown considerably the last couple of years, as he grasped any opportunity to get involved with the team in any way he could — starting with being an assistant coach at the USA Hockey National Junior Development Camp two summers ago (which determined the makeup of the U.S. National Junior Team that competed at the 2012 World Junior Championship). Bylsma also observed Team USA at the 2012 World Championship and helped other coaches with their development at USA Hockey’s National Hockey Coaches’ Symposium in Washington, D.C. in August, 2012. But this marks a new challenge for Bylsma, as Sochi will be his first time representing USA Hockey in international competition. He plans to use his experience coaching superstars Sidney Crosby continued on page 65

and Evgeni Malkin as part of his approach to handling an Olympic roster filled with the best American-born hockey players. “Just thinking about it and some of the challenges of picking a team, getting such a short time with that team before you go and play such meaningful games right off the hop when you get to Russia, it’s going to be such a short time,” Bylsma said. “The challenges are going to be great. Not just for the travel getting over there, the time change, but really one or two practices going into that tournament. You think of some of those things. “But the quality of the players and the number of players, I think just drawing upon the challenges of coaching some of the great players we’ve had in Pittsburgh is going to be a part of having such great players and a big roster going into the Olympic Games.” Bylsma may have a few familiar faces on his roster going to Sochi, as defensemen Brooks Orpik and Paul Martin should be in the mix for consideration, as well as forward Beau Bennett. And Bylsma will be working alongside a familiar face on the bench as Penguins assistant coach Tony Granato will be at his side. Also to top it off, Penguins general manager Ray Shero was named associate general manager for Team USA. Shero spent eight years as assistant general manager with the Nashville Predators under Team USA general manager David Poile’s watch between 1998-2006 before taking over in Pittsburgh. Team Advisory Group — which selects players for all U. S. National Teams, including Olympic teams — since February 2007. Shero’s relationship with Poile and his relationship with Bylsma has already helped make the process run smoothly. “It’s already been a big factor in such a short period of time since finding out about being the head coach, working with David Poile as the GM,” Bylsma said. “Ray has been a guy I’m very comfortable with and obviously his experience with David Poile, he’s been a big part of our conversations already in terms of going forward with the summer, the orientation camp and the picking of the team and the players heading over for the Olympic Games. So that familiarity and Ray’s experience with me and me with Ray, that’s going to be a big part of our team and the management staff. It’s already been a big part.” It’s going to be quite a road to the Olympic Games, and Bylsma knows that. But he also knows he has to stay focused on the main goal, winning gold — and enjoying everything that happens on the journey. “I think every day, some new realization about being in the Olympics, being on Team USA, competing for a gold medal, comes to mind,” Bylsma smiled. “I think the Olympic Village, the Olympic Games, competing on that grand stage is just every day, what an honor it is to be a part of it. It’s an honor to be the head coach and just really looking forward to that opportunity. Every day is dawning on me.” 66

TWITTER Q&A

DERRICK POULIOT @JORDAN16FALKNER Derrick, favorite sport other than hockey and compare yourself to a NHL d-man #AskPouliot “Favorite sport other than hockey I would say golf. Or maybe baseball. Comparing myself, I’d like to think I’m like a Drew Doughty or Kris Letang. I’m still trying to work on my defensive side of the game like those two have. But one of those two.” @THATPENSCHICK What is your favorite TV Show? #AskPouliot “Game of Thrones. There is a lot of stuff going on, lots of backstabbing, stuff like that. Treachery. It’s intense.” @JILL_REINER Do you have any rituals you do before playing a game? #AskPouliot “Not too many. I keep it pretty simple. Just stick taping. Warming up. I do the same thing everyday for warm-ups.” @DANNYR11 If you could relive any moment in your life what would you pick? #AskPouliot “That’s a tough one. Getting drafted. That’s a big one for me. Or winning the WHL championship last year. One of those two.” @MAELYNNERENE What is your favorite thing about the city of Pittsburgh? #AskPouliot “I don’t know. I haven’t gotten to see it too much yet. I like that it’s a real sports city. You can definitely tell that just walking around downtown. The fans are really behind all the teams here. I’ve been to a few games already. The sold out crowd is absolutely amazing. I can’t wait to play my first game.”

BACK IN PITTSBURGH

2012

After four years in Los Angeles, Rob Scuderi is back in Pittsburgh and the Penguins hope he can still be “The Piece” to their playoff puzzle. Before joining the Los Angeles Kings prior to the 2009-10 season, Scuderi was a key contributor to the Penguins’ 2008-09 Stanley Cup run, providing a calming presence to Pittsburgh’s defense. The 34-year-old blueliner held a plus-5 rating that postseason and the Penguins admit he has been dearly missed over the past four campaigns. “He was such a big part of the ’09 Cup,” Pascal Dupuis, Scuderi’s teammate for two seasons, said. “He went away and won one with L.A. and now he’s back and I think he wants to be here as well. Him and his wife and kids love to be here in Pittsburgh. “On the ice, he blocks shots, puts his body on the line to win every night. So, yes he’s a big piece of what we have.” Scuderi provided the Kings with the same steady play during their 2011-12 Stanley Cup run, and is aggressively chasing his third championship in six seasons. While he believes he still has several years of hockey left in him, Scuderi made it clear he chose to rejoin the Penguins because he feels they give him the best opportunity to win another Stanley Cup immediately. “The team is in a win-now mode,” Scuderi said. “Although I think I have plenty of good hockey left in me, I’m not blind to the fact that I’m 34 and I want a chance to win again and continued on page 112

this team provides you with that opportunity every year for the foreseeable future.” The Syosset, New York native said the city and fans of Pittsburgh also influenced his decision. “Another reason was that [Pittsburgh] is on the East Coast,” he said. “Our family is living out of Boston and my parents and extended family is in New York, so it's much closer than California. On top of that, we have a familiarity with the area. It’s not something where you have to switch teams and get used to a new area and put the kids in new schools. “We’re very familiar with the city. We’re very familiar with the area in general and I just think it makes the transition easier.” Scuderi also has familiarity with the Penguins roster, but one young defenseman he played with during his last stint in Pittsburgh has blossomed into an all-star. Kris Letang, a Norris Trophy candidate last season, will be paired with Scuderi and the nine-year veteran said he has been astonished by Letang’s development over the past four seasons. “Kris Letang has really gone through a transformation since I’ve last been here,” Scuderi said. “The things he’s able to do with the puck, his ability to play against top lines and play well against them is a different role than he played when I was here last.” Scuderi realizes that his return comes along with the expectation to help the Penguins toward another championship, but said he doesn’t feel any extra pressure. “I think you always want expectation,” Scuderi said. “It’s usually a good thing, but even if I’m playing at the highest level I could possibly play at, I’m not going to carry this team. We need our best players to be our best players. “I have to be a good role player, I have to do what I do well, but I don’t feel any added expectation.” 112

PENGUINS SELECT

2013.14 ICE CREW As the Pittsburgh Penguins entered a new era at CONSOL Energy Center, the team also introduced a skating Ice Crew for the 2010-11 season. Putting the snow removal crew on skates added a new level of speed and excitement to the Penguins’ game presentation. The unique co-ed squad includes hockey players, figure skaters and speed skaters. The Ice Crew removes excess snow on the ice during TV timeouts, interacts with fans, executes intermission games and participates in community and charity events throughout the season. The Ice Crew continues to grow and will once again take the ice at CONSOL Energy Center this season. On Saturday, July 20 the Penguins announced the 2013-14 Penguins Ice Crew. The three day audition process consisted of several on ice drills and individual interviews. Of the 107 applicants only 23 were selected to represent the Penguins for the 2013-14 season. Returning to the Ice Crew are team members David Champe, Tara Coyne, Daniel Dugan, Annie Federoff, Pam Gerlowski, Matt Harrison, Lee Hlavay, Jordan Johnson, Cam Jurysta, Rhiannon Kallis, Jared Manfredi, Anne O’Brien, Chris Smith, Laura Spencer, Steven Stepanian, Dan Thiessen Joining the veterans are first-time members Joey Alioto, Taylor Coyne, Corrie Jacob, Dylan Junker, Shay Gebler, Steven Geisel, and Emily Tarnow. JAMES NEAL

PENGUINS PROFILE:

JAMES NEAL BY: MARK MADDEN

Right winger James Neal and center Evgeni Malkin have forged a solid bond as linemates during their time together in Pittsburgh. “Geno and I are looking for each other all the time,” said Neal. “We’ve definitely built a good chemistry. We have a great feel for each other on the ice. When you play with great players, you need to adjust to their strengths.” Malkin and Neal have done that. Now, in 2013-14, who will round out that line? Whoever hits that lottery figures to cash in nightly. Malkin is a two-time NHL scoring champ, three-time first-team NHL All-Star, former NHL Most Valuable Player and former playoff MVP. Neal was first-team NHL All-Star right wing in 2011-12. The two primary candidates at training camp were Jussi Jokinen and Beau Bennett. The former looked to be the front-runner as the regular season beckoned. Jokinen netted a hat trick while skating with Malkin and Neal as the Penguins lost a preseason game 5-3 to visiting Columbus on Sept. 21. “Jussi’s a guy that can play every position,” Neal said. “He’s great on faceoffs. He can play the wing. He’s great in his own end. He’d fit in just right.” Referring to Bennett, Neal continued, “It makes a big difference when you get one year in the league. You get that confidence. Beau’s looked great so far in camp.” continued on page 123

121

continued from page 121

Bennett, 21, is somewhat slightly built. But Neal doesn’t feel that hinders Bennett's game. “He’s smart, he’s patient, and he’s got great hands,” Neal said. “He’s got that ability to go into the corners and roll off guys. He’s tough to contain. “The game’s all about speed these days. You don’t need to be that big, rough and tough guy. You need to be fast and smart. Beau has those abilities.” Neal, 26, has plenty of ability himself. He netted 40 goals in 2011-12, then netted 20 in last year’s truncated campaign. Neal figures to be heavily considered for Canada’s Olympic team. The 2014 Winter Games take place this coming February in Sochi, Russia. Neal isn’t letting that possibility clutter his thoughts, though. “It would be an unbelievable honor,” said the Whitby, Ontario, native. “But you can’t worry about that stuff. You’ve got to worry about your team here in Pittsburgh. Play the best you can. Do what you do. Hopefully, that gets you there. “If you start worrying about things like that, it can affect your game. You do things you shouldn’t.” The Penguins had a good playoff run last spring, but it ended a bit abruptly when they got swept by Boston in the Eastern Conference Final. “[Boston] had a good team,” Neal said. “Everybody’s going to learn from that. It gives you that experience. You really see what it takes to win. You’ve got to be on every night. You’ve got to score continued on page 125

goals, play defense, get great goaltending — and you’ve got to get all those things at the right time. “Boston got it going at the right time and they got to play for the Stanley Cup. Hopefully, we can do it this year. We’ve got the core guys.” Neal is certainly prepared. The 6-foot-2, 208-pounder spends the summer training with former Penguin Gary Roberts, a fellow Whitby product. “I’m with Robs every day in the summer,” Neal said. “He’s been a great mentor. I started training with him when he was 15. He’s been great for me, a great friend. “He’s definitely still an animal. He hasn’t lost that. He cares about the guys he trains and puts together a great program. He’s very smart about what he’s doing and he loves it.” The Penguins haven’t won a Stanley Cup since 2009. Given their star-studded roster, expectations are high. “Our team deals with that every year,” said Neal. “We’ve been working out all summer and doing the right things to prepare ourselves to have a great season. We’ve got a determined group. “No one likes losing. We’ve shown we can be a great team in the regular season. Now we need to show how good we are in the postseason.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

PENNSYLVANIA INTERSCHOLASTIC HOCKEY LEAGUE 2013-14 will mark the 15th consecutive season for the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League. The league consists of 67 teams that compete throughout the Western Pennsylvania region. Teams compete with varsity, junior varsity and freshman teams. This upcoming season, beginning this fall, promises to be both exciting and competitive. “Since 1999 when the PIHL was formed, we have seen our numbers grow steadily over the past 15 years. This year the PIHL will serve teams that range from State College, Erie, West Virginia, Johnstown and of Southwestern Pennsylvania,” said Commissioner of the PIHL, Ed Sam. High School hockey in the area started in the 1970’s that consisted of three different leagues (WPIHL, LKSHL and SHIHL) until they merged to become the PIHL. As amateur hockey continues to grow in numbers grow year by year, so has the PIHL. Every year numbers grow and competition grows stronger. The outlook on high school hockey looks to rival the likes of Boston and Minnesota with better players and more importantly better teams. continued on page 128

“We are looking to an exciting season that will feature over 1,500 games at Varsity, Junior Varsity, Freshman and even Middle School. The competition this year will see a battle for the Penguins Cup and other post-season tournaments through the year,” Sam added. The Penguins Cup is a post-season tournament which helps determine the champions at the AAA, AA, A classifications. The Penguins Cup Finals will once again be held at the CONSOL Energy Center this upcoming season. The winners of the Penguins Cup compete against the winners of the cross state Flyers Cup champions in which PIHL teams performed very well over the years. Last seasons Penguins Cup winners include North Allegheny (AAA), Greater Latrobe (AA) and Quaker Valley (A) who all look to repeat this year. PENGUINS ELITE The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods, which is quickly becoming the premiere AAA hockey program in the area, will feature 14 teams — nine boys teams and five girls teams. The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite teams will compete in the Tier I Elite Hockey League that includes the Philadelphia Junior Flyers, the Buffalo Junior Sabres, the DC Capitals, the Dallas AAA Stars, the Phoenix Junior Coyotes and the Los Angeles Junior Kings, among others. The Elite programs, both boys and girls, are finding tremendous success on the ice as the U18 boys and U14 girls were Tier 1 Elite League Champions this past year. The U14 girls were also bronze medalists at the USA Hockey National Championships. In the National Championships all three eligible boys teams (Midget Major, U14, U16) reached quarterfinals. “Our goal is to make Pittsburgh Penguins Elite the best AAA hockey program in the country,” said David Morehouse, CEO and President of the Pittsburgh Penguins. “But it isn’t just about winning games and championships. It’s about giving these young continued on page 132

is one of the largest girls’ tournaments in the US. “DICK’S Sporting Goods is thrilled to be the title sponsor of the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program. At DICK’S we believe sports matter and are committed to helping young athletes achieve their goals of playing at the highest level,” said Lauren Hobart, DICK’S Sporting Goods Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. “Our involvement with the Penguins Elite program is a great opportunity for us to support the growth of youth hockey in our hometown of Pittsburgh.” A tribute to the program’s success has been the players who have moved on to compete in college hockey across the country. This past year, the program has graduated eight girls to NCAA Division-III schools and two girls to Division-I (Syracuse, Boston College) totaling 13 girls currently playing Division-I college hockey. On the boys side, several Division-I commitments have occurred over the past 12 months, including Dartmouth, Ohio State and Miami (Ohio). The Elite boys programs have 47 former players currently competing in either college or junior programs. The boys teams practice and play home games at RMU Island Sports Center. The girls teams practice and play home games at both RMU Island Sports Center and Shadyside Academy. Both boys and girls also hold practices and games at the CONSOL Energy Center.

HEADS UP PITTSBURGH During the Summer of 2013, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine expanded their KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE concussion awareness program to include a free neck-strengthening kit during the new testing period. To date, over 8,000 youth athletes have been tested through the Heads Up Pittsburgh Program. Free Neurocognitive Baseline Testing was available for athletes age 10-14 at four Community College of Allegheny County campus locations — Boyce, North, South and the West Hills Center. Testing also took place at the UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side. In an unprecedented move to provide precautions and exercises that could reduce concussions, the first 2,000 participants during that time also received a free neck-strengthening kit. Experts believe this device will help to cut down the number of youthathlete concussions. Those participants that signed up at UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side and the CCAC North campus were also eligible to have their neck strength tested and be part of an ongoing UPMC research project. “We want to make the game safer for all young athletes. As a possible answer, we added the neck strengthening kit. Recently published research indicates that there is a direct correlation with improved neck strength and the reduction of concussions,” said Dave Soltesz, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. If you are interested in donating to the Heads Up Pittsburgh program or for more information, please visit the Penguins Foundation website at pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org or contact us at info@pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.com . 136

HOCKEY IS FOR EVERYONE For years Western Pennsylvania youth sports have been dominated by the likes of football, basketball and baseball. Recently however, the region has begun to see a change in preference and participation in sports. Hockey is rapidly becoming the most popular and fastest growing sport in the area. Success seen with the Pittsburgh Penguins on the NHL ice has surely created a demand and a certain excitement around the game, however the popularity of hockey goes well beyond the wins and world class talent the Penguins possess. A genuine love for the game is starting to sweep the area. Kids are beginning to play hockey at younger and younger ages thanks to the Little Penguins: Learn to Play Hockey program. This program will allow 1,000 kids, ages 4-8, to receive free headto-toe gear all thanks to the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and DICK’S Sporting Goods. Since it began in 2008-09 over 4,200 have been introduced to hockey through this program. The Penguins have also teamed up with the DICK’S Sporting Goods, Trib Total Media and the YMCA to create the YMCA Jr. Penguins program which introduces children to the sport through ball hockey. To this point well over 3,100 children have learned and participated in organized ball hockey at local YMCAs. Recently the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered together for Project PowerPlay, which will build 12 continued on page 140

dek hockey rinks throughout Allegheny County over a three-year period and allow local residents to play dek hockey for free. Dek hockey is becoming a great way to learn and play hockey without having ice, and was also vital in the development of current Penguins forward Beau Bennett who grew up in sunny California. On top of partnering with the Pennsylvania Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL), the Penguins and the Penguins Foundation have looked to support various hockey programs around the Pittsburgh area. The Steel City Icebergs is an adaptive ice hockey program for both children and adults with developmental disabilities such as autism, down syndrome and traumatic brain injuries. The Pittsburgh Mighty Penguins is a local sled hockey team, which is an internationally recognized event in the Paralympic games. The Mighty Penguins registered three teams on its roster that include youth, junior and adult players. Pittsburgh Ice (Inclusion Creates Equality) provides children, who may not otherwise have the opportunity, to play ice hockey at no cost and experience such a great game. Defending the Blue Line is a nonprofit organization created by soldiers with the spirit of keeping hockey alive for the children of our nation’s military heroes. It ensures that children of military members are afforded every opportunity to participate in the game of hockey by providing free equipment, hockey camps and financial assistance. 140

PROJECT POWER PLAY The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation’s Project Power Play initiative continues to flourish! The two newest dek hockey KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE rinks at Richland Township and Oakmont-Riverside Park are ready just in time for back-to-school programs to utilize. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, Highmark, the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County began Project Power Play in the summer of 2012 to build two new dek hockey rinks at Banksville Park and Lewis Park in Phase 1 of a three-year plan. By 2014, 12 facilities in the Pittsburgh area will house new dek hockey rinks and the goal of this project is to introduce children to the game at the grass roots level and give them a free venue to play, while keeping them active and having fun. The facilities, 155’ x 75’, are multi-sport courts and each includes a premier dasherboard system like those used in the NHL, players’ benches with shelter, penalty box, scorer’s table, scoreboard, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment. If you are interested in donating to the Project Power Play program or for more information, please visit the Penguins Foundation website at pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org or contact us at info@pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.com . 143

He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. NHL REALIGNMENT By: Michelle Crechiolo

Last season, Pittsburgh finished first in the Atlantic Division, ahead of the New York Rangers, the New York Islanders, Philadelphia and New Jersey. This upcoming season, the Penguins will be looking to defend that title against those same teams plus three new ones — Carolina, Columbus and Washington — in the newly created Metropolitan Division. As part of the NHL’s realignment plan that will be implemented for the 2013-14 campaign, the league will be in a more geographically appropriate two-conference, four-division format with 16 teams in the Eastern Conference and 14 teams in the Western Conference. The Eastern Conference divisions (Metropolitan and Atlantic — which will now consist of Boston, Buffalo, Detroit, Florida, Montreal, Ottawa, Tampa Bay, and Toronto) have eight teams in each while the Western Conference divisions (Central and Pacific) have seven teams in each. HERE’S HOW REALIGNMENT AFFECTS PITTSBURGH’S SCHEDULE…

In total, the Penguins will play regular-season games this season — 30 against their seven fellow Metropolitan Division foes; 24 games against the eight teams from the Atlantic Division; and 28 games against the 14 teams from the Western Conference.

Pittsburgh will play five games against the Philadelphia Flyers (3 home; 2 away) and Columbus Blue Jackets (2 home; 3 away), and four games (2 home; 2 away) against the other five Metropolitan Division teams.

The Penguins will play three games each against the eight teams in the Atlantic division — either two at home and one away or once at home and twice away. Teams that the Penguins will play twice at home and once away are Buffalo, Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. Pittsburgh will play Boston, Detroit, Florida and Tampa Bay just once at home.

And finally, for the first time since the 1997-98 season, the Penguins will play each of the 14 Western Conference teams once at home and once on the road. continued on page 162

METROPOLITAN DIVISION

The pre-realignment Atlantic Division was known for being one of toughest and most competitive divisions in the NHL, as it was not uncommon to see all five teams battling until the end to make the playoffs every year (and usually at least three advancing). Plus, the gap between the first-place team and the last-place team tended to be relatively small, especially compared to the gaps in other divisions. It also had some of the most intense rivalries, starting with the legendary, hate-filled and bitter one between cross-state teams Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. And there was no love lost between the Penguins and any of the other teams in the division, either. It doesn’t look like the new Metropolitan Division will be any friendlier. All of the rivalries from the former Atlantic Division, of course, will stay intact. The Capitals are already a current rival of Pittsburgh with all of the star power and history, and now that they’ll see more of each other we can only speculate as to how much more intense that will become. And there’s also more juicy potential for dislike to build between the Penguins and both the Hurricanes and Blue Jackets. continued on page 164

NEW ADDITIONS: COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS

The main reason Pittsburgh and Columbus could develop an exciting rivalry is the short distance between them. All seven of the Penguins’ Metropolitan Division opponents are within driving distance, but Columbus is by far the closest at just under three hours away. A lot of Penguins fans made the trip to Columbus the last time Pittsburgh played there on Dec. 4, 2010, with an influx of black and gold jerseys in the stands at the game. And with five games between the teams (three in Columbus, two in Pittsburgh) this season — including a home-and-home series on Nov. 1-2 — fans from both teams will venture into enemy territory to support their clubs. Call them destination rivals, if you will, with the added element of fan travel. WASHINGTON CAPITALS

The Penguins and the Capitals already have one of the NHL’s marquee rivalries. They clashed in the 2011 Winter Classic at Heinz Field, on a few Super Bowl Sundays and had an epic playoff battle in 2009 when Pittsburgh defeated Washington in seven games during the conference semifinals on its way to winning the Stanley Cup. Now that the two 164

teams (just a four-hour drive apart) are in the same division and will play each other four times this season — including a home-and-home series on March 10-11 — it could become even more intense. Pittsburgh and Washington developed such a strong rivalry because of star power. The Penguins have Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin while the Capitals have Alex Ovechkin. They are the three biggest superstars in the league and have been battling for individual honors (in addition to team glory in their playoff series) since Ovechkin broke into the NHL during the 2005-06 season. It’s always exciting to watch when they all go head-to-head. The Penguins-Capitals rivalry flared up in the 90s when the two teams met seven times in 11 years — with the Penguins winning in six of those series. That hatred has been carried over during the Ovechkin-Crosby/Malkin era. And it should only get hotter as the teams enter the same division.

CAROLINA HURRICANES

Pittsburgh’s rivalry with Carolina may not be as developed as it is with Washington, but it could get there. If it does, we’d bet it’s because of the Jordan Staal — Brandon Sutter trade. Staal, who played his first six NHL seasons with Pittsburgh, was a key member of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team and was part of the successful three-center model with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. But Staal wanted to play with his brother Eric, so the Penguins traded Jordan to Carolina at the 2012 NHL Draft for Sutter and prospects Brian Dumoulin and Derrick Pouliot. Staal signed a 10-year, $60-million deal with the Hurricanes a few days later. Staal came to Pittsburgh just once in his first season with Carolina, in the final game of the regular season. The sellout crowd at CONSOL Energy Center gave him an extended standing ovation as a tribute played on the video board, and Staal was emotional as he stood up and acknowledged the fans he had played in front of for his first six seasons. But now that that’s over and done with, don’t expect things to remain as friendly and cordial as they are now. Staal is an important part of Penguins history, but not their present or future. He’s a competitive guy, and the Hurricanes expect a lot from him. He’ll want to do everything he can to lead his team to success in the future, including beating his former team whenever possible. continued on page 168

PLAYOFFS

Realignment doesn’t just affect the regular season; it affects the postseason as well. The playoffs are now division-based and with an added wild-card system. The number of total playoff spots, 16, remains the same — eight for each conference. That means the Western Conference will have 14 teams competing for eight playoff spots, while the Eastern Conference will have 16 teams competing for eight playoff spots. It will likely end up being a tighter race for Pittsburgh and the rest of the Eastern Conference. The top three teams in the Metropolitan Division and the top three teams from the Atlantic Division will fill the first six spots. The remaining two spots (Nos. 7 and 8) will be filled by the wild-card teams, who are the next two highest-placed finishers in each conference based on regular-season points and regardless of division. That means the Metropolitan Division could send five teams to the playoffs while the Atlantic sends three; or vice versa. Or they could each send four. Regardless, the playoffs are now heavily based on divisional standings while before, only the division winner got a guaranteed spot in the playoffs. EASTERN CONFERENCE TOP

NHL.com explained the seeding best… “The seeding of the wild-card teams within each divisional playoff will be determined on the basis of regular-season points. The division winner with the most points in the conference will be matched against the wild-card team with the fewest points; the division winner with the second-most points in the conference will play the wild-card team with the second fewest points. The teams finishing second and third in each division will play in the first round of the playoffs. The winners of each series will play for berths in the conference championship series.” So while the wildcard system makes it possible to play a team in the opening round of the playoffs outside of the division, it’s more likely that teams will be playing the first two rounds against divisional foes. And we’ve seen first-hand the last few years just how intense that can be.

YOUTH HOCKEY POINTERS FROM COACH SKATE, SKATE, SKATE

No matter what level you are playing, skating is everything when it comes to hockey. However, skating isn’t just about being able to move backwards or forwards. Change of direction is critical when your team is on the transition from defense to offense, or vice versa. That makes being able stop, turn or pivot on a dime and quickly accelerate out of a start position as much a key to being a good skater as straightahead speed. Work hard to improve your skating when you can!

THE IMPORTANCE OF PASSING

Pay attention to your passing. Nothing moves the puck up ice quicker than a tape-totape pass. A good passing team is able to maintain possession of the puck for long stretches, putting itself in position continued on page 184

to generate more offense. What separates the great passers from the good ones is not only are they able to deliver the puck to a teammate when he or she is wide open, but they are able to use the boards and make area passes to teammates in traffic. “Practice perfect passing.”

GET TO THE NET

Everybody has probably heard the saying ‘good things happen when you go to the net.’ There is a good reason for that — everything happens there. When you have a chance to shoot, get the puck on net. You also have to make sure that you physically go to the net so that way you are there for tips, rebounds and screens — all plays that lead directly to goals.

WORK HARD AND HAVE FUN

We all want to be the best players we can be and help our team win each time we step on the ice. The easiest way to achieve this — WORK HARD EVERY TIME you step on the ice because work ethic is a huge key to being a successful hockey player. Just as important as working hard is ENJOYING THE GAME. Hockey is just that — a game — which means it is something we do to entertain ourselves. When you are having fun on the ice, chances are good that you are playing your best.

ICEBURGH A delight for children of all ages, Iceburgh — the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins not only provides fans with exciting game entertainment but this large, energetic bird can also be seen at a multitude of community events and elementary schools throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. Iceburgh arrived on the scene in 1992 and is a staple at all team events. During Penguins’ home games, fans most definitely notice the antics of Iceburgh leading sections of fans in cheers, greeting young children on the concourse or displaying his athleticism on-ice between periods. In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture “Sudden Death.” He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh wasted no time getting acquainted with his new home at CONSOL Energy Center in September of 2010. You can find Iceburgh sliding down stair banisters, dancing in the stands and tossing t-shirts to fans. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and recently performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. In addition to his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game, Iceburgh makes annual appearances at the Mascot Olympics held in Orlando, FL. CHICAGO STYLE NOT THE ONLY WAY TO CAPTURE A CUP BY: MIKE PRISUTA

As the defending Stanley Cup champions, the Chicago Blackhawks are the NHL’s rabbit entering the 2013-14 season, the team every other club wants to catch and surpass along the road to a championship. That’ll take some doing. “I thought Chicago just played with an unbelievable pace,” said back-again Penguins defenseman Rob Scuderi. Scuderi’s Los Angeles Kings saw their Stanley Cup defense end last season in five games against the Blackhawks in the Western Conference Final. “For the regular season and the postseason the pace that they’re able to play with at a high level and the consistency at which they’re able to do it is hard to keep up with,” Scuderi continued, assessing what ultimately worked for Chicago a season ago. “You add the talent they have in their locker room and on their roster and it’s a championship team.” The Blackhawks captured the Cup in six games against Boston, the same Bruins team that held the Penguins to just two goals during a four-game sweep in the Eastern Conference Final. For head coach Dan Bylsma and the Pens, the soul-searching that took place between their third-round elimination and the opening of training camp was nothing new. continued on page 196

continued from page 195

And it explored ways for the Penguins to get better much more than it did ways for the Penguins to emulate the Blackhawks. “This is a process you go through every year,” Bylsma said. “We went through it in ’09 when we won. It’s different than two years ago when we lose in the first round to Philly. We lose in the conference finals. We do not win a game in the conference finals. We’re not going to shy away from that in looking at ways we came up short and what we need to do better as a team and add to our team. “That’s not something we’re looking to do April 20 when playoffs come around. We have to build that now into our team. We’ve certainly been affected by it, looked at it, tried to have a reason why we couldn’t get a goal, or a power-play goal, or what happened in that particular instance to our power play that was good in every situation throughout the year and try to learn from that and apply it.” Analyzing how the Blackhawks fared against the Bruins was a part of that process, but not necessarily a revealing one or a defining one for the Penguins. “It’s tough to totally evaluate when you watch Game One and Chicago’s down by a goal and [the Blackhawks] get a shot from the point and it hits off a Boston defender at the side of the net continued on page 199

and goes in,” Bylsma said. “It’s tough to decide what that was, whether that was by design, schematic, “WE HOPE or did they just get a shot that TO CONTINUE went off [Andrew] Ference at the side of the net, his skate, and TO WIN got behind [Tuukka] Rask and we never got that goal. 70 PERCENT “But we came up short OF OUR without a question in that series against Boston in not being able GAMES IN to score both five-on-five and THE REGULAR on the power play and that’s something we have to look at. SEASON” As a team that scores the most Dan Bylsma goals in the regular season the last couple of years and had that pace in the playoffs last year, how did we come up short in that regard and why was that and where do we need to get better and have a better focus? “It’s certainly something we looked at.” Changes heading into this season won’t be dramatic, or in direct reaction to the Blackhawks. The Penguins are of the opinion that neither approach is necessary. “We hope to continue to win 70 percent of our games in the regular season,” Bylsma said. “There are certain things we look to adjust to and always have and always will, depending on what happened the last season. “Defensively there are a few adjustments that we’re going to add to our scheme. Also, I think the league continually changes and evolves. I think we have to look to a transition to offense in the neutral zone a little differently than what we’ve done in the past. It’s more of an addition to our team than a change. “We think in addition to that there are areas we can build as a group, as a whole.” Of this much the Penguins are certain: To get where Chicago has so recently been it’s going to take more than a complementary free-agent addition such as Scuderi. “Even if I’m playing at the highest level I can possibly play at, I’m not going to carry this team,” he said. “We need our best players to be our best players.” 199

LETANG’S BEST DAYS ARE AHEAD OF HIM BY: DAVID UHRMACHER

Kris Letang has become quite familiar with the city of Pittsburgh during the first seven season of his NHL career. And after signing an eight-year, $58 million dollar extension over the summer that kicks in after the 2013-14 season, Letang, 26, will have a lot more time to familiarize himself with his surroundings and become a more complete player. “I have been playing here all my life so, to have a chance to keep going for another nine years, it is exciting,” Letang said. “It is a fun city to play in, a great organization and obviously great teammates. So, it is exciting.” The entire Penguins organization is equally excited after the two sides reached the extension on July 2 to keep the 2012-13 Norris Trophy finalist in town through the 2021-22 season. “I think Kris is at a point in his career where we have just seen him grow and get better the last three years,” said assistant coach Todd Reirden, who works primarily with the team’s defensemen. 218

“For us to have a chance to lock him up long-term as an organization I think is a great job by our management and a great job by Kris to be a part of what we want to do here.” Letang, best known for his skating abilities, has been working closely with Reirden and the rest of head coach Dan Bylsma’s staff to develop a complete defensive game to complement his offensive touch. “All the credit goes to Kris,” Reirden said. “He has made a major commitment. I think every year we go in with a plan and an objective. He spends a lot of time at the rink working toward it. His success is well deserved and he has a ton of talent and a lot of guys have talent, but not many work as hard.” The 26-year old Montreal-native joined center Sidney Crosby and wingers James Neal and Chris Kunitz as one of four Penguins in attendance at the Canadian Olympic Team orientation camp in August. Letang’s defensive game has come a long way since his rookie season and with the addition of a new “piece,” Letang could finally find the consistent defensive partner he has long been looking for. That piece is Rob Scuderi, nicknamed “The Piece” for his Stanley Cup Championship pedigree, who returns to the Penguins organization after signing as a free agent this offseason, following a four-year stint with the Los Angeles Kings. Scuderi, 34, was a key member on the Penguins 2008-09 Stanley Cup Champion squad and brings back a sound defensive game to a team that allowed 2.48 goals per game last season. “We were just really excited to add Rob Scuderi back to our group and I think he is going to do a lot for Kris in terms of dependability, structure and having more of a consistent partner than we have been able to give him,” Reirden said. continued on page 220

219

continued from page 219

“Kris will play with a lot with everybody because that is the kind of ice-time that he commands with his game, but certainly things are pushing to having him and Rob together starting the year out.” Scuderi said the change in Letang’s overall game since the two were teammates during the 2008-09 season was night and day. If the lockout and injuries hadn’t limited him to a 35-game regular season, Letang would have had the chance to keep his career-high pace in plus-minus rating, points and ice time going. “Kris Letang has really gone through a transformation since I’ve been here,” Scuderi said. “The things he’s able to do with the puck, and he’s always been a great skater. But his ability to play against top lines and play well against them is a different role than he played when I was here last.” The chemistry that Letang and Scuderi could develop will be one of many storylines throughout the season for a defensive group filled with NHL-ready players. The pursuit of a Norris Trophy for the 26-year old Montrealnative could certainly be another. Even off the ice, Letang is beginning to realize the leadership role he needs to play as his role on the ice continues to grow. “If there’s one thing I need to address for myself is taking more of a role in the locker room, becoming a bigger leader for our team and the younger guys coming,” he said. “If we have a young guy like Simon [Despres], I’ll try to help him out and make sure he gets better every day and is a better player to help our team win. We have a lot of talent in the system in Simon and all those draft picks that we have. We need to get them into the lineup as quickly as possible and make sure they contribute.” The coaching staff and management have laid out a new plan for Letang headed into this season, with the goal becoming even better in his own end. General manager Ray Shero said that Letang is one important member of the Penguins core that will be playing together for the foreseeable future. “His best days are ahead of him,” he said.
