AROUND THE NHL The New Jersey Devils have been playing some inspired hockey as of late under the direction of head coach Jacques Lemaire, who took over the struggling squad on Dec. 23. While the Devils occupied the bottom spot in the Eastern Jacques Lemaire Conference as of Jan. 27, trailing eighth-place Atlanta by 22 points, they entered the NHL All-Star break with an impressive 6-1-1 record over their last eight contests. New Jersey had enjoyed a four-game winning streak, their longest stretch of the season, before losing to Detroit by a score of 3-1 on Jan. 26. New Jersey has been led by the play of goaltender Martin Brodeur, who earned his NHL-record 114th-career shutout against the Penguins on Jan. 20 en route to being named the league’s ‘Third Star’ for the week ending Jan. 24. “It’s a good feeling in here,” forward Jason Arnott told Yahoo! Sports. “It certainly is a lot more fun winning than losing. I think Jacques has had a big, huge part in that, turning us around, giving us a system that fits our team.” “We’re far away from where we want to be, but you never know,” Devils forward Ilya Kovalchuk told NHL.com. “We just have to keep working like that and we’ll see what’s going to happen.”
THOMAS IN TIP-TOP FORM Boston’s Tim Thomas has arguably been the league’s best goaltender for the duration of the 2010-11 campaign. Thomas, 36, ranks first in three of the four major Tim Thomas goaltending categories with a .945 save percentage, a 1.81 goals-against average and seven shutouts. He’s now an impressive 24-5-6 on the season. His consistently stellar play had the Bruins occupying the top spot in the Northeast Division with a four-point margin over second-place Montreal as of Jan. 27, and Thomas’ efforts got him named the NHL’s ‘First Star’ for the week ending Jan. 24. The All-Star netminder went 3-0-0 over that span, stopping 106-of-110 shots for one whitewashing, a 1.33 goals-against average and .964 save percentage.

FORSBERG SKATES WITH AVS
8
Peter Forsberg is attempting a return to the National Hockey League with the Colorado Avalanche, the team he spent 10 seasons with, after a nearly three-year hiatus. Forsberg has played the last two seasons in his native Sweden since last skating in the NHL with the Avalanche in the 2008 playoffs. Peter Forsberg Forsberg, 37, is currently an unrestricted free agent. He was one of the NHL’s best players over his 13-plus seasons in the league, winning the Hart Trophy (MVP) and Art Ross Trophy (leading scorer) in 2004.

RON BURKLE Ron Burkle has now added a new arena — Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center — to his tremendous list of accomplishments in the business world. Burkle, widely recognized as one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 12th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have developed one of the outstanding ownership groups in all of professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his role in negotiations for the new arena deal. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for three-plus seasons and established new standards for television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits while winning acclaim as the No. 1 team in professional sports in Fan Relations. A consistent post-season threat on the ice, the Penguins reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009 and won the Cup in 2009. Young stars such as Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Jordan Staal and others have been signed to long-term contracts, ensuring that the team’s core will remain intact. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League and the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy. He has received numerous awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year and the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year award.

MARIO LEMIEUX Mario Lemieux always will be remembered for the magic he created on the ice, but one of the crowning achievements of his remarkable career came this season in his role as a businessman — the opening of CONSOL Energy Center, home of the Penguins and Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue. The new arena puts the exclamation point on Lemieux’s lengthy quest to ensure the Penguins’ long-term future in Pittsburgh and provides his adopted hometown with a spectacular state-of-the-art center for professional and collegiate sports, concerts, family shows and other events. “There were so many people who contributed to this project, including local and state political leaders, local business leaders, NHL officials and, of course, our fans,” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse, “but I think it’s safe to say that none of this happens without Mario Lemieux.” Even before the reality of CONSOL Energy Center, Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle had turned the Penguins into a premier NHL franchise, winning praise for off-ice business accomplishments in addition to creating a positive, player-friendly atmosphere on the hockey side. The Penguins have sold out a team-record 186 straight games, sold out every suite for three straight seasons and established records for local television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits. Over the summer, the Penguins were named the No. 1 team in professional sports in Fan Relations by ESPN The Magazine. Oh, and they won the Stanley Cup in 2009 — the third Cup of Lemieux’s career but his first as an owner. Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVPs trophies and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP, in addition to the two Cups. An immaculately gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $8 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario, his wife Nathalie and their four children live in Sewickley.

DAVID MOREHOUSE Pittsburgh native David Morehouse was named CEO of the Penguins in September and leads the team into an exciting new era at CONSOL Energy Center. Morehouse had served as team president since 2007, overseeing ticket sales, marketing, corporate sales, communications and brand development, as well as representing the team in corporate relations and governmental affairs. Under his leadership the Penguins have become one of the top organizations in professional sports — ranked No. 1 in Fan Relations and No. 5 overall as a franchise among 122 pro teams in North America by ESPN The Magazine. As team president, Morehouse implemented a brand strategy that featured a new commitment to marketing, fan interaction and community outreach, as well as a targeted focus on the team’s young fan demographic. Under his leadership, the Penguins have sold out every game for three straight seasons — the sellout streak was at 166 games entering 2010-11— while leading all U.S.-based NHL teams in local TV ratings last season and setting new standards for website traffic and social media. Morehouse joined the Penguins in December, 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project, following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill, as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He was Senior Advisor for the John Kerry for President campaign in 2004, traveling on the campaign plane and serving as Senator Kerry’s traveling chief of staff. He worked in the Clinton-Gore White House in the 1990s, and was Senior Counselor and Trip Director for Vice President Al Gore from 1999-2001. Morehouse grew up in the Beechview section on Pittsburgh. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University, and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Vanessa, have three children and live in Bell Acres.

RAY SHERO Ray Shero, 48, is at the vanguard of the NHL’s new breed of general managers — steeped in family hockey tradition but on the cutting-edge of new technology and modernization in hockey operations, player relations and team management. His fresh ideas and calm but firm management style helped transform the Penguins from a team that did not qualify for the playoffs in 2005-06 to one that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2007-08 and won the Cup in 2008-09. During that time, he has moved boldly to ensure a strong future for the Penguins, signing six key members of the team’s core — Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Jordan Staal, Brooks Orpik and Kris Letang — to long-term contracts. Shero built on the team’s already strong foundation by adding key pieces in the 2010 offseason to set the Penguins up for long-term success. With shrewd maneuvering and an aggressive approach during the first day of free agency, he solidified the team’s blue line with the long-term signings of top-rated defensemen Paul Martin and Zbynek Michalek. Shero was named GM on May 25, 2006 and one of his first acts was to declare a goal of building a team that could compete for championships on a yearly basis. He revamped the team’s hockey operations staff and structure, upgraded professional and amateur scouting, added a team operations director and opened new lines of communication with the business side of the organization. In his first season, 2006-07, Shero led his team to its first playoff berth since 2001 and a 47-point improvement in the standings — the fourth-largest improvement from one season to the next in NHL history. Building on that success, the Penguins topped 100 points for the second straight season in 2007-08, winning their first division title since 1998 and advancing to the Stanley Cup Final, where they fell to Detroit. After a rocky start in 2008-09, the Penguins rallied when Bylsma was named head coach in February, finishing 18-3-4 to earn a playoff berth and then defeating Philadelphia, Washington, Carolina and Detroit en route to the Stanley Cup. Along the way, they twice overcame 2-0 deficits in games (against Washington and Detroit), won all four seriesclinching games on the road and won two Game Sevens on the road — including the 2-1 thriller at Detroit for the Cup. Ray’s father, Fred, had won two Stanley Cups as head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers in 1974 and 1975. The Sheros are one of the few father-son tandems to appear on the Cup. The late Fred Shero also was a coach and general manager with the New York Rangers. Ray built his hockey sense and managerial style during 14 seasons as an NHL assistant general manager — six with the Ottawa Senators and eight with the Nashville Predators. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University, twice serving as team captain, and was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1982. He spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. The native of St. Paul, Minn. is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.

JASON BOTTERILL Jason Botterill enters his second full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position on May 22, 2009 by general manager Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockeyrelated matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top-minor league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 34, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins; his responsibilities included salary cap management, professional and amateur scouting and overseeing prospects development. Botterill’s avant-garde approach and understanding of the salary cap has been a major asset for the Penguins. Before joining Pittsburgh, Botterill worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was a first-round draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in 1994 and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo. He also played 393 career games in the AHL and IHL, recording 127 goals and 257 points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four seasons at the University of Michigan, where he earned his MBA, and helped lead the Wolverines to the NCAA title in 1996. He also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in 1994, 1995 and 1996, helping his team win gold medals in all three tournaments. He resides in Pittsburgh along with his wife, Andrea.

In just one-plus seasons behind the bench, Dan Bylsma has already become one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history. After being promoted to Penguins head coach in February 2009, Bylsma, 40, directed the team to its third Stanley Cup in franchise history — a feat previously accomplished by legendary coaches “Badger” Bob Johnson and Scott Bowman. In the process Bylsma became the 14th rookie head coach, and just the fourth in the past 50 years, to capture the Stanley Cup. Of those 14, only Montreal’s Al MacNeil (1970-71) took over mid-season. Bylsma has the best regular-season winning percentage (.659) in team history, and is tied with Bowman for most postseason victories (23) and series victories (5). He also became the eighth-fastest head coach in NHL history to hit the 50-win mark (78 games). All-time under Bylsma, the Penguins boast a 65-31-11 regular-season record; 35-13-5 home record; 31-17-6 road mark; 40-3-3 when leading after two periods; 42-1-1 when scoring four or more goals; and 43-9-6 when scoring first. In 2009-10 the Grand Haven, Mich. native completed his first full NHL season behind the bench for Pittsburgh, leading the club to a 47-28-7 record for 101 points — breaking 100 points for the sixth time in franchise history and for the third time in the last four years — finishing only two points behind New Jersey for the Atlantic Division title. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons as a right winger with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-2004. He played 429 NHL regular-season games, recording 19 goals and 62 points, and also played in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final with Anaheim. He began his coaching career as an assistant with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks of the AHL in 2004-05 and made his NHL coaching debut as an assistant with the New York Islanders in 2005-06. Bylsma was an assistant coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for two seasons from 2006-08 and was named head coach at the start of the 2008-09 season. He went 35-16-1-2 in 54 games with WB/S before being promoted to Pittsburgh. He played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son and reside in the North Hills.

Reirden, completed his first full season as WB/S head coach in 2009-10, leading a young and inexperienced team to an impressive 41-34-2-3 record, finishing third in the East Division, and a berth in the Calder Cup playoffs. Prior to joining the Penguins organization, Reirden spent one season as an assistant coach with the Bowling Green Falcons (CCHA) — his alma mater. He was a teammate of Bylsma’s during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons at Bowling Green. MIKE LANGE One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange enters his 35th season with the Penguins and will handle radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.
PHIL BOURQUE Two-time Stanley Cup champion Phil Bourque begins his seventh season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75+89) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88+111) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for FSN Pittsburgh’s coverage of Penguins hockey.
BOB GROVE After a 17-year career as the Penguins beat writer for the Washington Observer-Reporter, Bob Grove joined the team’s radio broadcasts in 1998 as a frequent studio host/co-host and is now in his sixth season as full-time host of the pre- and post-game broadcasts and intermissions on the Penguins Hockey Network. Grove wrote Pittsburgh Penguins: The Official History of the First 30 Years in 1997 and has contributed game notes to GOAL Magazine inserts or Icetime programs for every Pittsburgh home game since 1986. He was also a contributor to the second edition of Total Hockey and to The Game I’ll Never Forget. He is a senior writer covering hockey for the Pittsburgh Sports Report and also hosts “Heineken Hockey Hour” and “Bob Grove’s Hot Stove” on Penguins Radio at 105.9-HD 2.

COMMUNITY UPDATE PENGUINS HOST CHILDREN FROM IMMUNE DEFICIENCY FOUNDATION The Penguins gave seven children and their families from the Immune Deficiency Foundation (IDF) a VIP evening on Jan. 25 at CONSOL Energy Center for Pittsburgh’s 1-0 victory over the New York Islanders. The evening was a great success, as the children and their families met head coach Dan Bylsma, hung out with NHL officials in their locker room and had their very own suite to watch the game — complete with a visit from Iceburgh. Mary Beth Bylsma, wife of coach Bylsma, organized the event through the Penguins organization for families involved with the IDF. Over 250,000 people have been diagnosed with this disease in the United States. There are different forms and severities of the illness, with Dan and Mary Beth’s son, Bryan Bylsma, suffers from the selective IgA strain of immune deficiency. Mary Beth also came up with the notion to combine the IDF event with the National Hockey League Officials Association (NHLOA). The NHLOA has their own program to help children in need and their families, known as “Zebras Care.” This links in with the IDF’s main theme, “Think Zebra,” which encourages doctors to think outside the box when diagnosing young children. Scott Driscoll, one of the linesmen for the game, spoke of how reaching out to families in need is so important to the NHLOA. “We try to give the kids a reprieve from what they are going through,” Driscoll said. “It’s a realistic situation that they are in, but when they come here they are happy and smiling and it’s a dream come true for them to attend a hockey game.”

PENGUINS PROVING THEY HAVE PLENTY OF CHARACTER The Penguins entered uncharted territory on Jan. 20 against the New Jersey Devils. That night marked the first time since Evgeni Malkin joined the Penguins in 2006-07 that both he and captain Sidney Crosby were out of the lineup for a game. When elite players like Crosby and Malkin both miss a game, it’s not just uncharted territory — more like stormy, churning waters. But the Penguins have proven they’re up to the task of navigating through the wakes left by the absences of their top-two leading scorers. The team won five of their last six games heading into the All-Star break and the last two without Crosby and Malkin, culminating with a 1-0 victory over the New York Islanders on Jan. 25. “I think the last two games we have played pretty well,” forward Craig Adams said following the game after scoring the game-winning goal. “We have been a bit inconsistent since our big streak ended in December. So we just need to be consistent. . . [In the Islanders game] you can see what the identity of our team is and what it should be. We need more nights like that.” Contributions from role players like Adams and Dustin Jeffrey, recalled from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League numerous times this season,
Craig Adams scored the game-winning goal on January 25 against the Islanders.

have been crucial to Pittsburgh’s continuing success. Pair that with outstanding goaltending from Marc-Andre Fleury, and the Penguins have been just fine. “There is a clear understanding in our room, no matter who’s in the lineup, of how well we are playing and what that looks like,” head coach Dan Bylsma said. “I think the challenge for our guys when we lose Crosby or Malkin to an injury is a challenge that we can uphold the expectation
The Penguins have had all of their four-man core of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Jordan Staal and Marc-Andre Fluery on the roster for just two games this season.
of how we can play. You see our guys going over the boards and accepting that challenge. They’ve done a good job of that, and we expect to execute at that level. And we expect to have success doing it.” This is the first time Crosby and Malkin have been out simultaneously — Crosby has sat out the past nine games while Malkin has missed a total of eight. But this isn’t the first time the Penguins have played extended stretches without at least one of their four core players. Pittsburgh has played just two games this season with their four-man core of Crosby, Malkin, Jordan Staal and Fleury. But the Penguins aren’t using injuries as an excuse. “There are ups and downs,” Bylsma said. “There are injuries at different parts of the year for teams. We’ve had them and we’ve had the injuries, but that’s not exclusive to our club. We talked about finishing strong here before the break as a challenge for our team, in particular with some of the injuries that we have. . . Then, it’s coming back strong for the next 32 games towards the playoffs. . . It’s a challenge for our team, and we’ve accepted that challenge.”

And the Penguins have proven their ability to respond to adversity, as they rank at or near the top of several major categories after the first 50 games of the season. Pittsburgh has the league’s top-ranked penalty kill, clicking at an 88.5-percent rate — more than 2.5 percentage points ahead of second-place Vancouver. Of the league’s 30 teams, the Penguins are tied for first in home wins with 17, tied for second in wins with 31, second (tied) with a +44 goal differential and fourth (tied) with 66 points. What’s perhaps the most impressive is that the Penguins are the NHL’s second-stingiest defensive team with a 2.24 goals-against average while ranking sixth (tied) in goals for with a 3.02 average.
Out of the league’s 30 teams the Penguins are tied for first in home wins with 17.
“We’ve had some injuries to some key guys,” Bylsma said. “Our team has had to play games in different situations — guys in different spots, call-ups. The ways the guys have responded and leaned on the details of our game and how we play, the expectation of how we play and to get wins in five out of six games going into the break I think is a real testament to the guys in that room. “They’re playing the right way, from our forwards to our defensemen and our goaltender. It wasn’t pretty all the time, but we’ve found ways to scratch and claw and get wins. That’s a big part of the last little bit for our guys and something to rest on here for five days before we get back to the last 32 games.”

TONIGHT’S COMPETITORS ARE:
ROUND ONE HEAT FOUR: NORTH PITTSBURGH WILDCATS MAJOR BLACK 2 VS. SOUTH HILLS PANTHERS MAJOR BLACK 2 The one-on-one competition features Nick Hawkins/ Ryan Hiel from North Pittsburgh Wildcats Major Black 2 against Cal Raymore/ Michael Trossman from South Hills Panthers Major Black 2. You can also view this and previously shown competitions at pittsburghpenguins.com.
On Saturday, October 16, sixteen youth hockey teams from the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) in the Pee Wee age group (age 11 - 12) participated in a shootout competition at CONSOL Energy Center. The event was videotaped to be shown in episodes at Penguins home games. The first round of competition featured heats between two teams striving to advance to the next round. Sixteen teams fielded five skaters shooting against the opposing team’s goalie. After each team competition, an individual shooter and goaltender squared off against the opposing team’s individual tandem for a one-on-one competition. Each winning team and pair of individuals advanced to the next round of eight teams/tandems. The format repeated as teams and individual pairs advanced through the quarterfinal heats to move on to the semi-finals. Robust competition marked the semi-final round for teams and individual tandems. The remaining two teams and individual tandems then had to “leave it all on the ice” in vying for the championship. Early in the second intermission of each Penguins home game the various heats in the competition will be featured. Enjoy each episode.

I feel
.
Ask a grieving child how they’re feeling and you may get a lot of answers. Or none at all. For many, finding the words to express their feelings can be difficult. But while finding the right words may not be easy, finding the right place to turn to for help can be. At the Caring Place, we’re here when grieving children need someone to listen, to talk, or to just sit and be. For more information about one of our peer support groups or to volunteer, call us today.

OUR NEW HOME CONSOL Energy Center opened in August, 2010 as Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue — home of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins as well as other professional and collegiate sports, concerts, children’s shows, skating shows and more. It replaced the old Civic Arena/Mellon Arena, which had operated since 1961 and was home of the Penguins from their inception in 1967. It was the oldest arena in the National Hockey League. “CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins,” said David Morehouse, CEO of the hockey team. “With open concourses, comfortable seating, cutting-edge technology, a state-of-the-art scoreboard and sound system, and an extensive array of food and beverage options, it is

It is a green building and is the first NHL arena to attain LEED Gold certification. In its first few months, CONSOL Energy Center also hosted such acts as Lady Gaga and The Eagles; was home to the Pittsburgh College Hockey Showcase with Robert Morris; and featured multiple NCAA Division I basketball games, including the “City Game” between Pitt and Duquesne and the Big East/SEC Challenge. In its first season of operation, CONSOL Energy Center also will be home to the Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League — bringing indoor football back to the city for the first time in almost 20 years. A funding plan for the new arena project was completed in March, 2007, thanks to the combined efforts of Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, among others. The Sports & Exhibition Authority owns the building on behalf of the city and county, and the Penguins have the lease. The new arena is managed by SMG, with Jay Roberts serving as general manager.
The CONSOL Energy Center has already hosted acts such as Paul McCartney, The Eagles, and Lady Gaga. It was home to the Pittsburgh College Hockey Showcase with Robert Morris and has featured multiple NCAA Division I basketball games.

MY HOMETOWN: TONY GRANATO
DOWNERS GROVE, ILLINOIS What was it like growing up in Downers Grove? It was good for me, because it was a big time for the Blackhawks because of Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita and Tony Esposito. So I grew up a big Blackhawks fan, and my brothers and sisters and I all played. We had winters where they used to flood a park across the street for us from November to probably the middle of March. So we got to skate outside and learn hockey playing outside, which was really cool. It was probably when I was three years old. It was right across the street from my house. We used to spend lots of time on that frozen park. What was your favorite sports team? The Blackhawks and the White Sox, for sure. Todd Reirden is a Cubs fan — he’s a North sider, I’m a South sider — so we still give each other a hard time about both sides of town. What was your favorite restaurant? We used to have a place called Salerno’s Pizza. We used to go there a lot. It’s an Italian restaurant that had great pizza and great Italian food. Where did you hang out? If you look back, it’s kind of funny. I’m the oldest of six, so we’ve got a lot of kids in our family and we all had the same passion for hockey. We basically played hockey all day. That’s all I remember about being a child is playing in the basement, playing in the backyard and playing on the pond. What was your favorite part about growing up there? I think it’s a great sports town. There’s not only the Bears, but the Blackhawks and the White Sox as well. So it’s a good sports community. I never had a chance to play football because hockey season conflicted, but baseball and the youth sports programs were real good there. It was a fun place to grow up. 120

WHAT’S HAPPENING DEVELOPMENTAL PROGRAMS LEARN TO PLAY HOCKEY With the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and Dick’s Sporting Goods over the last three years the Penguins have provided over 2,200 sets of equipment free to local youth ages 4 to 7. This year, four girls-only programs will operate along side of our standard co-ed Little Penguins program. OPEN PRACTICE The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation presented the 2010 Pittsburgh Penguins Open Hockey Practice on Thursday, December 9, 2010 at the brand new CONSOL Energy Center. The event offered a rare opportunity for over 10,000 school students in grades one through eight from across Allegheny County to see the Pittsburgh Penguins at work. Students were entertained leading up to the start of practice with informational videos about behind-thescenes aspects of the team/facility, as well as educational elements related to the game (geography, math, etc.) each student received an activity book as a takeaway.
WELLNESS TRAINING K.A.M.P. AT UPMC SOUTHSIDE Presented by UPMC Sports Medicine and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. Young hockey players were divided into groups and performed a rotation of 10-minute drills, while UPMC Sports Medicine professionals provided assessments. While the athletes trained, their parents received lectures on nutrition, concussions and sports injuries in general. Over 150 athletes and parents attended the event.
132
CONCUSSION PROGRAM The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, in conjunction with UPMC Sports Medicine, are prepared to announce a comprehensive program for baseline testing and concussion education for all youth sports beginning at the earliest possible ages.
PENGUINS FOUNDATION CHARITY ASSIST RAFFLE The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Penguins Foundation are pleased to host the Penguins Foundation Charity ASSIST Raffle, raising money for a variety of local charities in the western Pennsylvania area. Look for ticket sellers in their red aprons at every home game. The minimum prize each game is $2,000!
NEW SPORTS INITIATIVES — COMING IN 2011 OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES In its efforts to fight the sedentary tendencies of America’s youth, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation is excited to offer outdoor programs to promote fun and organized physical activity. The program, to be revealed in January, is designed to take advantage of the growing popularity of hockey in the tri-state area by affording young players access to existing facilities and newly constructed outdoor multi-use athletic facilities. These programs provide safe areas to play games under the supervision of established organizations. SCHOOL PROGRAMS • FIRST STRIDE In the ultimate Field Trip, participating schools will be provided with a Penguins-themed hockey experience: Students will be transported to and from a local ice arena, outfitted in full hockey equipment and learn fundamental hockey skills. The program will conclude with each child scoring their first goal! • GYM CLASS FOR A DAY This program is designed for 4th and 5th grade physical education classes and will provide basic skills and game instruction. Gym Class for a Day will transform your school gymnasium or parking lot into a dek/ball hockey rink. The Penguins will provide equipment for an ongoing P.E. Hockey Program. Penguins staff will be on hand to assist P.E. teachers in demonstrating and administering basic hockey skills and games. Each student will be provided a hockey ball and Penguins t-shirt to take home and continue practicing their skills.

THE PENGUINS GAME VAULT APRIL 13, 1982 • ISLANDERS 4, PENGUINS 3 OT NASSAU COLISEUM Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has said on numerous occasions that sometimes a team needs a little “short-term misery” to bring about long-term gains. If there has ever been a franchise that knows a thing or two about short-term misery bringing long-term gains it’s the Pittsburgh Penguins. On April 13, 1982, the Penguins had the defending Stanley Cup Champion New York Islanders sitting 60 minutes (or longer, depending on overtime) from being bounced in the opening round of the playoffs as the two squads’ Preliminary Round series sat tied at 2-2 entering the deciding fifth game. Despite surprising the Islanders and jumping out to a 3-1 lead after the opening 20 minutes, the Penguins would allow New York to score three unanswered goals, including the Ron Francis overtime winner by John Tonelli, as the Islanders bounced the Penguins from the postseason with a dramatic 4-3 come-from-behind win. At the time, the devastating loss to the Islanders was a bitter pill for the franchise to swallow because not only did the Penguins give up three-straight goals after tallies by Pittsburgh’s Kevin McClelland, Mike Bullard and Randy Carlyle, but it was also the manner in which New York’s comeback occurred. Pittsburgh held onto that 3-1 lead until deep into the third period. New York cut into its deficit on a goal by Mike McEwen with just 5:27 to play in regulation. Tonelli then evened things up at 3-3 with the first of his two tallies 3:06 minutes following McEwen’s goal. At that point momentum was clearly with the Islanders. Tonelli ended what felt like the inevitable 6:19 into the extra session, securing the Islanders a 4-3 victory. While New York’s epic comeback denied the Penguins a chance to advance to the second round, it did have a positive long-term effect on the team, as it marked the beginning of a transitional phase from playoff also-ran to that of rebuilding. Following the loss to the Islanders it would be seven years before the Penguins would partake in another postseason contest. But in the years in-between the franchise laid the groundwork for a mini-dynasty by taking advantage of high draft picks to select the likes of Mario Lemieux, Bob Errey, Doug Bodger, Craig Simpson, Zarley Zalapski, Chris Joseph and Darrin Shannon. Lemieux and Errey were the captains of the Penguins’ back-to-back Stanley Cup championship squads in 1991 and 1992. Bodger and Shannon were used to acquire goaltender Tom Barrasso; Simpson and Joseph were sent to Edmonton for defenseman Paul Coffey; Zalapski was a central piece in the deal which brought Ron Francis and Ulf Samuelsson to Pittsburgh at the 1991 trading deadline. Had the Penguins held on and defeated the Islanders, their rebuilding might have been put off by a year or two and history would have been altered forever. Sometimes short-term misery can result in some pretty good long-term gains. Just ask the Penguins. 147
STICKING WITH THE SYSTEM The Penguins pretty much limped into the NHL’s All-Star break but they didn’t stagger. That was a significant development in the eyes of head coach Dan Bylsma, who sounded a lot like Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin — his favorite refrain in the face of injuries is “the standard is the standard” — while insisting that even without forwards Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin in the
The Penguins went 5-1-0 in the last six pre-break games without Crosby and 2-1-0 in the first three games without Crosby and Malkin.
lineup the Penguins still could and still should trust and embrace their systems. “There’s a clear understanding in our room no matter who’s in the lineup of how we’re going to play and what that looks like, and there’s an expectation that we’re going to play that way,” Bylsma said just before the break. “When you add guys, whether you add to their roles or you add to what they’re doing for our team now or when you call up guys [from AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton], the expectation of how we’re going to play in our organization is there. “The challenge for our guys when we lose a Crosby or a Malkin to an injury, there’s a challenge that we can uphold that expectation of how we’re going to play. You see our guys going over the boards and accepting that challenge. They’ve done a good job of that.” The Penguins lost Crosby to a concussion beginning with a game against the Montreal Canadiens on Jan. 6 but went 5-3-1 without him through the last game of the unofficial first half of the season, a 1-0 win over the New York Islanders on Jan. 25. The Penguins had gone 0-2-1 in their first three games without their captain but were continued on page 151

able to rally even though Malkin left the lineup (knee, sinus infection) following a 4-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Jan. 18. They went 5-1-0 in the last six pre-break games without Crosby and 2-1-0 in the first three games without Crosby and Malkin available, their first three games without both since Malkin’s arrival for the 2006-07 season. Such adversity was nothing new for a team that was forced to play the first 39 games this season without forward Jordan Staal (foot, hand). The Penguins posted a 25-11-3 mark minus Staal. Overall, the Penguins lost 131 man-games to injury over the first 50 games. They were still able to produce a record of 31-15-4, which was good enough to stand second in the Atlantic Division, five points behind the Philadelphia Flyers, and fourth in the Eastern Conference. The Penguins were tied for fourth with the Detroit Red Wings in the NHL’s overall standings. “That’s the expectation,” Bylsma maintained. “We expect to execute at that level and we expect to have success doing it. We have good players to be able to do that, guys like [forward] Dustin Jeffery coming up, they have that same expectation. There’s no sag in how we’re going to play the game. “You’ve seen that not only this year but in the past with the players in our organization.” Although goals had sometimes been tougher to come by with a deleted lineup the Penguins remained a strong defensive team, as evidenced by their No. 2 ranking in goals against (114, two more than the Boston Bruins’ 112) at the break. “I don’t think we’ve really changed much, to be honest,” defenseman Brooks Orpik said. “Some guys are getting more ice time and playing different roles, power play and what not. “But we’re playing the exact same way. We’re not playing any more defensive but I think guys have just buckled down a little more and their focus has been a little bit better.” The unofficial second half commenced with a game against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night. Bylsma was hoping his team would return from the break “refreshed, renewed and healthy” after “finishing strong,” a challenge he presented to the Penguins as they counted down the final days prior to the All-Star Game. “I don’t feel like this has been a long first half, 50 games before the break,” he said. “Certainly, like the season is, there are ups and downs, there are injuries. There are different parts of the year for your team. We’ve had them, we’ve had the injuries but that’s not exclusive to your club. “We know it’s [31] games from here towards the playoffs.” No matter who is or isn’t playing. Mike Prisuta is the sports director for WDVE-FM and the sports anchor for “Jim, Randy & the DVE Morning Show.”

PENS PROFILE DUSTIN JEFFREY
Dustin Jeffrey may be in the Penguins’ lineup when you read this. Or, he may be back in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. The Penguins recalled Jeffrey from the minors four times between Dec. 10–Jan. 19. Such is the life of a young prospect on the fringe of the NHL. But Jeffrey, 22, is a prepared young prospect. “I have a couple of suits and a couple of shirts that are always packed,” Jeffrey said, smiling. The day will come when Jeffrey is established as an NHL player and won’t have to navigate the 235-mile drive between WilkesBarre/Scranton and Pittsburgh. But that day has yet to arrive, so Jeffrey tries to make the most of whatever NHL duty he gets. Jan. 22 was a big day in that regard. Jeffrey scored the game’s first goal as the Penguins, depleted offensively by injuries to Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, defeated Carolina 3-2 at CONSOL Energy Center. “It was four-on-four — a lot of room out there,” said the 6-foot-1, 205-pound forward. “[Kris Letang] did a good job — when he cuts Jeffrey scored the game’s first goal as the through, it really confuses guys. Penguins defeated Carolina 3-2 on Jan. 22. I got open, and [Jordan Staal] had a really good screen. “I was going to try and one-time it, but it wasn’t in the spot. So I just stopped it. Made sure it wasn’t getting blocked and going the other way. I just wanted to get it there and give Staalsy the opportunity to whack away.” Staal didn’t have to whack at all. Jeffrey’s shot from the right circle found a home behind Carolina goaltender Cam Ward. Brooks Orpik got the assist. The goal was Jeffrey’s second in six NHL games this season. Jeffrey can play any role, on any line. He has the skills to rank ninth among American Hockey League scorers (as of Jan. 23) despite playing significantly less games than many in continued on page 172

the AHL’s top 10 because of his NHL call-ups. Jeffrey had 15 goals and 26 assists in his first 37 AHL games this campaign. Jeffrey also has the two-way acumen to execute the defensive responsibilities necessary to handle third- or fourth-line duty in the NHL. “My versatility is my skill,” said the Sarnia, Ontario native. “My first call-up, I was playing on the penalty-kill. The last couple games, I’ve been playing on the power play. I’ve been moving up and down the lineup. “It’s tough to get big minutes with the guys they have here. They play so well. They’re some of the best players in the league. So whatever opportunity they give me — like a chance four-on-four [vs. Carolina] — I’ve got to make the most of it. Hopefully, you can earn the coaches’ trust.” The Carolina game provided good ice for Jeffrey: He was on the surface for 11 minutes, 55 seconds. “It depends on the personnel in the lineup,” Jeffrey said. “Last time I was up, I played 6-7 minutes a game on the lower lines. The last couple games, I’ve played 10-14 minutes. When you get that kind of an opportunity, you need to try and create more. Your responsibility grows. “When you play 6-7 minutes, you’re supposed to bring energy. Get pucks deep and be responsible. Make sure nothing happens against, and create energy.” Jeffrey is confident he’ll get a long-term opportunity in Pittsburgh. Nine forwards currently on the roster are scheduled to become free agents in the summer. But now… “I’m the only one that can go up and down like I have been,” Jeffrey said, referring to the fact that he doesn’t have the three years of pro hockey or 180 NHL games necessary to have to clear waivers before going to the minors. “Hopefully, I make a good impression this year. “If they keep calling me up like they have been, I’ve got Dustin Jeffrey was on the ice for a total of 11 minutes to make the most of it. Keep and 55 seconds on Jan. 22 against Carolina. improving.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).
