BOLTING TO THE BAY The Tampa Bay Lightning are in the midst of a 12-game homestand, the longest in the NHL since the 1975-76 season. After a brutal first half of the season which included 22 road games out of 34, the Lightning managed to come out on top and lead the Southeast Division. Tampa Bay won the first two games of the homestand, including a 4-0 win over Philadelphia, to move within two points of first place in the Eastern Conference. However, Lightning head coach Guy Boucher said that homestands can be tough and his team needs to fight complacency. He told TampaBayLightning.com that he plans to go on a few trips with the team during the month-long stretch. “We’ll get them out, make them feel that their comfort zone is not necessarily what we need for the entire month,” Boucher said. “What I do like about it is that we are playing very tough teams. It’s going to be difficult, but it’s going to be fun.” In addition, Tampa Bay’s front office made several recent announcements to outline a “complete brand and business transformation.” The team redesigned its jerseys to give it a simpler look, and its arena, the St. Pete Times Forum, will undergo a $35 million, privately funded renovation.

SKINNER SHINES Carolina’s Jeff Skinner was named the NHL’s Rookie of the Month for January on Feb. 2, as he led all first-year players in scoring for the month with 14 points (9G-5A). The Hurricanes went 6-1-0 during the month of January in games that the center scored a goal. He tallied twice in both a 6-3 Jeff Skinner victory over New Jersey on Jan. 1 and a 5-3 win over Florida on Jan. 7, embarking on a five-game scoring streak from Jan. 7-15 where he scored eight points (5G-3A). To top it off, Skinner was selected to play in the All-Star Game on Jan. 26, becoming the youngest All-Star in NHL history at 18 years, 259 days. He broke the previous record set by Steve Yzerman (18 years, 267 days) in 1984. 8

The Buffalo Sabres owner Tom Golisano recently sold the team to Penn State alumni Terry Pegula. Pegula is a Pennsylvania businessman originally from Orchard Park, N.Y., home of the NHL’s first-ever Winter Classic in 2008. The billionaire recently broke into the hockey scene when he Terry Pegula donated $88 million to Penn State University to upgrade its men’s and women’s hockey programs to the Division I NCAA level. It marked the largest donation in Penn State history. However, the process is not finalized, as the NHL must review and approve the sale.

RON BURKLE Ron Burkle has now added a new arena — Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center — to his tremendous list of accomplishments in the business world. Burkle, widely recognized as one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 12th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have developed one of the outstanding ownership groups in all of professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his role in negotiations for the new arena deal. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for three-plus seasons and established new standards for television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits while winning acclaim as the No. 1 team in professional sports in Fan Relations. A consistent post-season threat on the ice, the Penguins reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009 and won the Cup in 2009. Young stars such as Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Jordan Staal and others have been signed to long-term contracts, ensuring that the team’s core will remain intact. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League and the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy. He has received numerous awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year and the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year award.

MARIO LEMIEUX Mario Lemieux always will be remembered for the magic he created on the ice, but one of the crowning achievements of his remarkable career came this season in his role as a businessman — the opening of CONSOL Energy Center, home of the Penguins and Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue. The new arena puts the exclamation point on Lemieux’s lengthy quest to ensure the Penguins’ long-term future in Pittsburgh and provides his adopted hometown with a spectacular state-of-the-art center for professional and collegiate sports, concerts, family shows and other events. “There were so many people who contributed to this project, including local and state political leaders, local business leaders, NHL officials and, of course, our fans,” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse, “but I think it’s safe to say that none of this happens without Mario Lemieux.” Even before the reality of CONSOL Energy Center, Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle had turned the Penguins into a premier NHL franchise, winning praise for off-ice business accomplishments in addition to creating a positive, player-friendly atmosphere on the hockey side. The Penguins have sold out a team-record 186 straight games, sold out every suite for three straight seasons and established records for local television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits. Over the summer, the Penguins were named the No. 1 team in professional sports in Fan Relations by ESPN The Magazine. Oh, and they won the Stanley Cup in 2009 — the third Cup of Lemieux’s career but his first as an owner. Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVPs trophies and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP, in addition to the two Cups. An immaculately gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $8 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario, his wife Nathalie and their four children live in Sewickley.

DAVID MOREHOUSE Pittsburgh native David Morehouse was named CEO of the Penguins in September and leads the team into an exciting new era at CONSOL Energy Center. Morehouse had served as team president since 2007, overseeing ticket sales, marketing, corporate sales, communications and brand development, as well as representing the team in corporate relations and governmental affairs. Under his leadership the Penguins have become one of the top organizations in professional sports — ranked No. 1 in Fan Relations and No. 5 overall as a franchise among 122 pro teams in North America by ESPN The Magazine. As team president, Morehouse implemented a brand strategy that featured a new commitment to marketing, fan interaction and community outreach, as well as a targeted focus on the team’s young fan demographic. Under his leadership, the Penguins have sold out every game for three straight seasons — the sellout streak was at 166 games entering 2010-11— while leading all U.S.-based NHL teams in local TV ratings last season and setting new standards for website traffic and social media. Morehouse joined the Penguins in December, 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project, following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill, as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He was Senior Advisor for the John Kerry for President campaign in 2004, traveling on the campaign plane and serving as Senator Kerry’s traveling chief of staff. He worked in the Clinton-Gore White House in the 1990s, and was Senior Counselor and Trip Director for Vice President Al Gore from 1999-2001. Morehouse grew up in the Beechview section on Pittsburgh. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University, and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Vanessa, have three children and live in Bell Acres.

RAY SHERO Ray Shero, 48, is at the vanguard of the NHL’s new breed of general managers — steeped in family hockey tradition but on the cutting-edge of new technology and modernization in hockey operations, player relations and team management. His fresh ideas and calm but firm management style helped transform the Penguins from a team that did not qualify for the playoffs in 2005-06 to one that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2007-08 and won the Cup in 2008-09. During that time, he has moved boldly to ensure a strong future for the Penguins, signing six key members of the team’s core — Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Jordan Staal, Brooks Orpik and Kris Letang — to long-term contracts. Shero built on the team’s already strong foundation by adding key pieces in the 2010 offseason to set the Penguins up for long-term success. With shrewd maneuvering and an aggressive approach during the first day of free agency, he solidified the team’s blue line with the long-term signings of top-rated defensemen Paul Martin and Zbynek Michalek. Shero was named GM on May 25, 2006 and one of his first acts was to declare a goal of building a team that could compete for championships on a yearly basis. He revamped the team’s hockey operations staff and structure, upgraded professional and amateur scouting, added a team operations director and opened new lines of communication with the business side of the organization. In his first season, 2006-07, Shero led his team to its first playoff berth since 2001 and a 47-point improvement in the standings — the fourth-largest improvement from one season to the next in NHL history. Building on that success, the Penguins topped 100 points for the second straight season in 2007-08, winning their first division title since 1998 and advancing to the Stanley Cup Final, where they fell to Detroit. After a rocky start in 2008-09, the Penguins rallied when Bylsma was named head coach in February, finishing 18-3-4 to earn a playoff berth and then defeating Philadelphia, Washington, Carolina and Detroit en route to the Stanley Cup. Along the way, they twice overcame 2-0 deficits in games (against Washington and Detroit), won all four seriesclinching games on the road and won two Game Sevens on the road — including the 2-1 thriller at Detroit for the Cup. Ray’s father, Fred, had won two Stanley Cups as head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers in 1974 and 1975. The Sheros are one of the few father-son tandems to appear on the Cup. The late Fred Shero also was a coach and general manager with the New York Rangers. Ray built his hockey sense and managerial style during 14 seasons as an NHL assistant general manager — six with the Ottawa Senators and eight with the Nashville Predators. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University, twice serving as team captain, and was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1982. He spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. The native of St. Paul, Minn. is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.

JASON BOTTERILL Jason Botterill enters his second full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position on May 22, 2009 by general manager Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockeyrelated matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top-minor league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 34, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins; his responsibilities included salary cap management, professional and amateur scouting and overseeing prospects development. Botterill’s avant-garde approach and understanding of the salary cap has been a major asset for the Penguins. Before joining Pittsburgh, Botterill worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was a first-round draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in 1994 and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo. He also played 393 career games in the AHL and IHL, recording 127 goals and 257 points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four seasons at the University of Michigan, where he earned his MBA, and helped lead the Wolverines to the NCAA title in 1996. He also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in 1994, 1995 and 1996, helping his team win gold medals in all three tournaments. He resides in Pittsburgh along with his wife, Andrea.

In just one-plus seasons behind the bench, Dan Bylsma has already become one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history. After being promoted to Penguins head coach in February 2009, Bylsma, 40, directed the team to its third Stanley Cup in franchise history — a feat previously accomplished by legendary coaches “Badger” Bob Johnson and Scott Bowman. In the process Bylsma became the 14th rookie head coach, and just the fourth in the past 50 years, to capture the Stanley Cup. Of those 14, only Montreal’s Al MacNeil (1970-71) took over mid-season. Bylsma has the best regular-season winning percentage (.659) in team history, and is tied with Bowman for most postseason victories (23) and series victories (5). He also became the eighth-fastest head coach in NHL history to hit the 50-win mark (78 games). All-time under Bylsma, the Penguins boast a 65-31-11 regular-season record; 35-13-5 home record; 31-17-6 road mark; 40-3-3 when leading after two periods; 42-1-1 when scoring four or more goals; and 43-9-6 when scoring first. In 2009-10 the Grand Haven, Mich. native completed his first full NHL season behind the bench for Pittsburgh, leading the club to a 47-28-7 record for 101 points — breaking 100 points for the sixth time in franchise history and for the third time in the last four years — finishing only two points behind New Jersey for the Atlantic Division title. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons as a right winger with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-2004. He played 429 NHL regular-season games, recording 19 goals and 62 points, and also played in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final with Anaheim. He began his coaching career as an assistant with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks of the AHL in 2004-05 and made his NHL coaching debut as an assistant with the New York Islanders in 2005-06. Bylsma was an assistant coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for two seasons from 2006-08 and was named head coach at the start of the 2008-09 season. He went 35-16-1-2 in 54 games with WB/S before being promoted to Pittsburgh. He played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son and reside in the North Hills.

GAME NOTES

Paul Martin scored two unassisted power-play goals in the first period during the Penguins’ last meeting against the Blue Jackets on Dec. 4.

THE SERIES This is the Columbus Blue Jackets’ first game in Pittsburgh in more than two years. Their last game was at Mellon Arena on Feb. 6, 2009, a 4-1 Pittsburgh victory in which Kris Letang scored two goals and Sidney Crosby had a goal and two assists. Marc-Andre Fleury made 33 saves in the game. . . This is the second game of the season between the teams, as the Penguins earned a 7-2 road win Dec. 4 behind two goals each from Crosby and Paul Martin. Both of Martin’s goals were unassisted power-play goals in the same period (first period), an extremely rare feat. . . Pittsburgh scored on each of its first three power-play attempts in that game and is 8-for-23 (34.78 percent) on the power play over its last five games against the Jackets. . . The Penguins are 4-0-1 in their last five games against Columbus since dropping a 6-1 decision at Columbus on Jan. 11, 2006. . . Pittsburgh is 4-1-0 all-time at home against the Jackets and has won three straight. The Blue Jackets’ only road win over the Penguins came on March 11, 2002 (4-2), a game in which Ray Whitney and Mike Sillinger each had two goals and two assists. The only player who skated in that game and remains with his team is the Jackets’ Rostislav Klesla. . . Columbus has recorded at least one power-play goal in eight of its last nine games against the Penguins (12-for-55, 21.8 percent). . . Pittsburgh is 8-3-1 all-time in 12 games against the Jackets. continued on page 31

MIKE LANGE One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange enters his 35th season with the Penguins and will handle radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

PHIL BOURQUE Two-time Stanley Cup champion Phil Bourque begins his seventh season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75+89) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88+111) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for FSN Pittsburgh’s coverage of Penguins hockey.

BOB GROVE After a 17-year career as the Penguins beat writer for the Washington Observer-Reporter, Bob Grove joined the team’s radio broadcasts in 1998 as a frequent studio host/co-host and is now in his sixth season as full-time host of the pre- and post-game broadcasts and intermissions on the Penguins Hockey Network. Grove wrote Pittsburgh Penguins: The Official History of the First 30 Years in 1997 and has contributed game notes to GOAL Magazine inserts or Icetime programs for every Pittsburgh home game since 1986. He was also a contributor to the second edition of Total Hockey and to The Game I’ll Never Forget. He is a senior writer covering hockey for the Pittsburgh Sports Report and also hosts “Heineken Hockey Hour” and “Bob Grove’s Hot Stove” on Penguins Radio at 105.9-HD 2.

COMMUNITY UPDATE 2010-11 PENS & PINS CHARITY BOWLING SHIRT AUCTION The Pittsburgh Penguins Wives Association hosted their third annual Pens & Pins Charity Bowling Tournament for the benefit of Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater PA and Southern WV and once again, it was a huge success. Not only did the participants have a great time bowling with their 2010-11 Penguins team, but through their support, they also helped raise money to fulfill wishes of Make-A-Wish children in our local area. The tournament featured Penguins players serving as celebrity team captains for each competing bowling team. Each player signed the bowling shirt that he wore that evening, as well as a team signed bowling shirt and team signed bowling pin. Fans that were not able to take part in the fun at Pens & Pins will be able to bid on those unique prizes. All proceeds from this online auction will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater PA and Southern WV. The auction will run from Wednesday, January 26 until noon on Wednesday, February 9. To bid on a bowling shirt or the bowling pin from this year’s event, please visit the Penguins website at pittsburghpenguins.com. Joe Battista still remembers receiving a text message from Terry Pegula announcing that the largest gift ever bestowed upon The Pennsylvania State University — $88 million — had officially been signed, sealed and delivered for the purposes of funding an NCAA Division I hockey program. “It was written like a text message,” Battista said. “It said, ‘Its a grt day for hcky n Hppy Vally.’” More are on the horizon. Battista, whose official title is associate athletic director for ice arena and hockey operations, will enthusiastically inform anyone willing to listen that Penn State actually had a varsity program from 1939-46, and that photographic evidence exists of games being staged on campus outdoors in 1909 and 1910. Still, this will be a groundbreaking endeavor in more ways than one. Battista, who served under Paul Steigerwald as the Penguins’ assistant marketing director beginning in 1982 and became the Penguins’ first director of amateur hockey development prior to leaving organization in 1985, can’t wait until the puck finally drops for Penn State’s Joe Battista, former member of 2012-13 varsity season. the Penguins organization, is associate “Hockey in Pennsylvania has never been this athletic director for ice arena and hockey operations at Penn State. popular,” Battista gushed. “You have the Penguins and their branding, they sell more merchandise and more tickets and more people watch them than any other NHL team. Very close behind the Penguins are the Flyers. Hershey has won back-to-back (AHL) Calder Cups. Pictured above left to right: Joe Battista;

THE ALL NEW

WITH HOSTS STEVE MEARS AND KATIE O’MALLEY

SATURDAY MORNINGS AT 10:30

ALL SEASON LONG ON

// Up Close and Personal with Penguins Players // Behind the Scenes with Coach Dan Bylsma // Around the League // Penguins Crossfire // Much More…

THE MOST FUN YOU CAN HAVE WITH THE PENGUINS, WITHOUT GOING TO THE GAME!

You have the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins. You have two Division I teams in Robert Morris and Mercyhurst. You have Pittsburgh hosting the NCAA Frozen Four in 2013 and Philly in 2014. “There hasn’t been a better time for the growth and interest in hockey in the state. I think the last time I looked Penn State had a varsity hockey program from 1939-46. there were 78 Pennsylvania kids on Division I rosters and there were 18 that at least dressed on an NHL roster this year. That’s a huge number and that number’s just going to keep growing. “We are poised to capture that enthusiasm and energy. Terry Pegula’s purchase of the Buffalo Sabres is imminent. So not only is he engaged in helping Penn State philanthropically, but his passion, I would say his obsession with hockey, is hard to understand. This is a guy who lives and breathes the game.” Pegula, a Penn State graduate, announced his gift on Sept. 17. Of the $88 million, $75 million will fund construction of Penn State’s new arena, a proposed 6,000-seat, double-sheet facility that will include approximately 500 club seats, 12 suites and 10 loge boxes. The other $13 million will endow 18 of the 36 scholarships for the new men’s and women’s teams. The eventual goal is for the men’s program to be a revenue-generating sport and for both programs to become self-sufficient. Battista is already getting inquiries about season tickets and suites, and resumes from coaches. The initial announcement sent a buzz through college hockey circles that captured the attention of some of the sport’s most prominent and most experienced coaches. And Battista is poised to announce another million-dollar gift as part of an ongoing fundraising campaign, the goal of which is raise an additional $10 million over the next two years. “We’re off to a good start,” he said.

THE PROGRAM’S TIMELINE, IF ALL GOES ACCORDING TO PLAN, WILL UNFOLD AS FOLLOWS: J

Coaches for the men’s and women’s teams will be hired in late May or early June.

J

Ground will be broken for the arena in November or December.

J

And the first varsity season will be the 2012-13 campaign. Penn State will play that season in the school’s existing facility (Greenberg Ice Rink, capacity approximately 1,350-1,400 with standing room) as an NCAA Division I independent.

“We’ll play Army, Air Force, Robert Morris, RIT and Wisconsin,” Battista said. “We have agreements for about 28 games as of right now.” continued on page 62

Eventually, “If you’re a betting man I’d bet that there will be a Big Ten Conference,” Battista said. “The question is what year will it start?” Current Big Ten members Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State and Wisconsin have long-established programs. Penn State’s modern-era history with the sport dates back to a club team that was formed in 1971. The school has claimed seven American College Hockey Association national club championships, with six of those coming during Battista’s 19-year run as Penn State’s club coach (1987-06). “We did it with a lot of Pittsburgh kids, a lot of western Pennsylvania kids,” Battista said. “When you walk around this campus it’s amazing, the number of hockey jerseys you see. ”It’s amazing how many people on this campus have grown up with hockey.” Penn State’s program will continue to grow the game by playing at the CONSOL Energy Center and at professional rinks in places such as Philadelphia, Hershey and Wilkes-Barre Scranton. “The first two years we fully expect to take our SEVEN TIME AMERICAN lumps, but you gotta jump COLLEGE HOCKEY ASSOCIATION into the fray at some point,” NATIONAL CLUB CHAMPIONS Battista said. “We’re going to want to expose our program to as many areas of the Commonwealth as we can. We’re just really excited about this. “The Pegulas [Terry and his wife, Kim] want Pennsylvania, this part of the country to be thought of in the same vein as Michigan, Massachusetts 1990 and Minnesota with regard to hockey. I think we’re going to see a lot of kids that will benefit from the Pegula’s passion for the sport. “Probably the best quote was from Terry Pegula when he said, ‘Maybe someday a Sidney Crosby will come out of these hills of Pennsylvania.’” 2003 That would be yet another great day for hockey.

TONIGHT’S COMPETITORS ARE:

ROUND ONE HEAT SIX: NORTH PITTSBURGH WILDCATS PEE WEE 4 VS. SOUTHPOINTE RINK RATS PEE WEE 2 The one-on-one competition features Jake Ondrejko/ Tony Crugnale from Southpointe Rink Rats Pee Wee 2 against Evan Mattys/ Casten Shimko from North Pittsburgh Wildcats Pee Wee 4. You can also view this and previously shown competitions at pittsburghpenguins.com.

On Saturday, October 16, sixteen youth hockey teams from the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) in the Pee Wee age group (age 11 - 12) participated in a shootout competition at CONSOL Energy Center. The event was videotaped to be shown in episodes at Penguins home games. The first round of competition featured heats between two teams striving to advance to the next round. Sixteen teams fielded five skaters shooting against the opposing team’s goalie. After each team competition, an individual shooter and goaltender squared off against the opposing team’s individual tandem for a one-on-one competition. Each winning team and pair of individuals advanced to the next round of eight teams/tandems. The format repeated as teams and individual pairs advanced through the quarterfinal heats to move on to the semi-finals. Robust competition marked the semi-final round for teams and individual tandems. The remaining two teams and individual tandems then had to “leave it all on the ice” in vying for the championship. Early in the second intermission of each Penguins home game the various heats in the competition will be featured. Enjoy each episode.

I feel

.

Ask a grieving child how they’re feeling and you may get a lot of answers. Or none at all. For many, finding the words to express their feelings can be difficult. But while finding the right words may not be easy, finding the right place to turn to for help can be. At the Caring Place, we’re here when grieving children need someone to listen, to talk, or to just sit and be. For more information about one of our peer support groups or to volunteer, call us today.

OUR NEW HOME CONSOL Energy Center opened in August, 2010 as Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue — home of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins as well as other professional and collegiate sports, concerts, children’s shows, skating shows and more. It replaced the old Civic Arena/Mellon Arena, which had operated since 1961 and was home of the Penguins from their inception in 1967. It was the oldest arena in the National Hockey League. “CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins,” said David Morehouse, CEO of the hockey team. “With open concourses, comfortable seating, cutting-edge technology, a state-of-the-art scoreboard and sound system, and an extensive array of food and beverage options, it is

It is a green building and is the first NHL arena to attain LEED Gold certification. Even before its doors had opened, CONSOL Energy Center landed commitments from shows that would have bypassed the old arena — the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament first and

In its first few months, CONSOL Energy Center also hosted such acts as Lady Gaga and The Eagles; was home to the Pittsburgh College Hockey Showcase with Robert Morris; and featured multiple NCAA Division I basketball games, including the “City Game” between Pitt and Duquesne and the Big East/SEC Challenge. In its first season of operation, CONSOL Energy Center also will be home to the Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League — bringing indoor football back to the city for the first time in almost 20 years. A funding plan for the new arena project was completed in March, 2007, thanks to the combined efforts of Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, among others. The Sports & Exhibition Authority owns the building on behalf of the city and county, and the Penguins have the lease. The new arena is managed by SMG, with Jay Roberts serving as general manager.

The CONSOL Energy Center has already hosted acts such as Paul McCartney, The Eagles, and Lady Gaga. It was home to the Pittsburgh College Hockey Showcase with Robert Morris and has featured multiple NCAA Division I basketball games.

ELK RIVER, MINNESOTA What’s your hometown like? It’s about an hour north of Minneapolis. It was a small town, but it’s not so much anymore. It’s expanded. Growing up there was great, and I have a lot of family there. It was small, and it didn’t have a lot of restaurants and stuff. But now it has everything. What was it like growing up there? It was a typical small town. We had a pond back behind our house, and in the winter, the neighborhood kids would skate on it and other outdoor rinks. It was always fun. Everyone kind of knew everyone growing up in that kind of town. Where did you and your friends hang out? At the hockey rinks, basketball courts or baseball fields — any park or anywhere that there was something to do outside. We used to roller blade and play some roller blade games out in the parking lots quite a bit. What was your favorite sports team besides hockey? The Minnesota Twins

OUR MISSION To actively promote physical well being, encourage teamwork, stress the value of education and provide essential life skills to young people in our community through youth hockey and other activities.

WHAT’S HAPPENING DEVELOPMENTAL PROGRAMS LEARN TO PLAY HOCKEY With the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and Dick’s Sporting Goods over the last three years the Penguins have provided over 2,200 sets of equipment free to local youth ages 4 to 7. This year, four girls-only programs will operate along side of our standard co-ed Little Penguins program. OPEN PRACTICE The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation presented the 2010 Pittsburgh Penguins Open Hockey Practice on Thursday, December 9, 2010 at the brand new CONSOL Energy Center. The event offered a rare opportunity for over 10,000 school students in grades one through eight from across Allegheny County to see the Pittsburgh Penguins at work. Students were entertained leading up to the start of practice with informational videos about behind-thescenes aspects of the team/facility, as well as educational elements related to the game (geography, math, etc.) each student received an activity book as a takeaway.

WELLNESS TRAINING K.A.M.P. AT UPMC SOUTHSIDE Presented by UPMC Sports Medicine and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. Young hockey players were divided into groups and performed a rotation of 10-minute drills, while UPMC Sports Medicine professionals provided assessments. While the athletes trained, their parents received lectures on nutrition, concussions and sports injuries in general. Over 150 athletes and parents attended the event.

CONCUSSION PROGRAM The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, in conjunction with UPMC Sports Medicine, are prepared to announce a comprehensive program for baseline testing and concussion education for all youth sports beginning at the earliest possible ages.

PENGUINS FOUNDATION CHARITY ASSIST RAFFLE The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Penguins Foundation are pleased to host the Penguins Foundation Charity ASSIST Raffle, raising money for a variety of local charities in the western Pennsylvania area. Look for ticket sellers in their red aprons at every home game. The minimum prize each game is $2,000!

NEW SPORTS INITIATIVES — COMING IN 2011 OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES In its efforts to fight the sedentary tendencies of America’s youth, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation is excited to offer outdoor programs to promote fun and organized physical activity. The program, to be revealed in January, is designed to take advantage of the growing popularity of hockey in the tri-state area by affording young players access to existing facilities and newly constructed outdoor multi-use athletic facilities. These programs provide safe areas to play games under the supervision of established organizations. SCHOOL PROGRAMS • FIRST STRIDE In the ultimate Field Trip, participating schools will be provided with a Penguins-themed hockey experience: Students will be transported to and from a local ice arena, outfitted in full hockey equipment and learn fundamental hockey skills. The program will conclude with each child scoring their first goal! • GYM CLASS FOR A DAY This program is designed for 4th and 5th grade physical education classes and will provide basic skills and game instruction. Gym Class for a Day will transform your school gymnasium or parking lot into a dek/ball hockey rink. The Penguins will provide equipment for an ongoing P.E. Hockey Program. Penguins staff will be on hand to assist P.E. teachers in demonstrating and administering basic hockey skills and games. Each student will be provided a hockey ball and Penguins t-shirt to take home and continue practicing their skills.

SHADY SIDE ACADEMY ENJOYS ANOTHER TRIP TO EUROPE Shady Side Academy plays Division 1 Prep School Hockey in the Midwest Prep Hockey League, which consists of teams from Canada, Ohio, New York, Illinois and Pennsylvania. Along with their league schedule, Shady Side also plays over 40 tournament and non-conference games throughout the United States and Canada. However, the trip that players and coaches most look forward to is the nine-day trip to Europe that the boys’ prep team has taken every three years since 2004, with their first trip being to Germany, Italy, and Austria. Three years later, they went to the Czech Republic. This year, the team traveled to Switzerland and France to play four games against junior teams from Switzerland. For the players and coaches, the European trip is about more than just playing games in another country — it is also about the experience they get to have. Other than playing hockey, the team enjoyed sightseeing in both Switzerland and France. Some highlights included going to the Olympic Museum in Lausanne and going to Mont Blanc, the European Alps’ highest mountain. Despite their 1-3 record, Shady Side can take many positives away from their nine-day trip overseas. Sharing a once-in-a-lifetime trip with your teammates and coaches can bring a team closer than ever. “We spent every waking moment with each other for nine days and we experienced things together that not many other teams are able to do,” senior captain Andrew Black said. By playing against the better teams that Switzerland had to offer, Shady Side realized that they can play with any squad that they step onto the ice with. “We were playing teams that had kids that were 19 and 20 years old,” head coach Jonathan Johnson said. “Some of them even split time on professional teams in Switzerland.” The confidence that Shady Side received from being competitive against some of the best teams in Europe has helped them after returning from overseas. Shady Side won the next four games after returning home from Europe, and they hope that their success will continue for the rest of the year as they look to capture the school’s first prep league title. Shady Side is already talking about their next trip to Europe. “The sophomore players are already trying to get me to take the team again in two years instead of waiting three years because they enjoyed the trip so much and they want to go on another before they graduate,” Johnson said. Some possible destinations suggested so far include, Sweden, Finland, England and perhaps even Russia. 145

THE PENGUINS GAME VAULT FEBRUARY 10, 2001 • PENGUINS 5, DEVILS 4 OT MELLON ARENA The 2000-01 Pittsburgh Penguins were blessed with a plethora of offensive firepower and that was before Hall of Fame owner Mario Lemieux shocked the hockey world by returning to the ice in dramatic fashion on Dec. 27, 2000. However, on a team that featured the likes of Lemieux, Art Ross Trophy winner Jaromir Jagr, 95-point scorer Martin Straka and emerging power forward Robert Lang, it was Russian superstar Alexei Kovalev who was arguably the team MVP. Playing the right wing on a potent line with Straka and Lang, Kovalev established career highs across the board with 44 goals, 51 assists and 95 points. Kovalev carried the team at times early in the season as Jagr struggled to find his game prior to Lemieux’s return. Kovalev was especially good against the New Jersey Devils on Feb. 10, 2001, scoring his 31st, 32nd and 33rd goals of the season — giving him hat tricks in back-to-back home games — as he sparked a comeback from a 3-0 deficit in an eventual 5-4 overtime victory at Mellon Arena. While Kovalev would eventually deliver the game-winning goal a mere 18 seconds into the extra session, it was New Jersey that did all of the Alexei Kovalev celebrating early behind a pair of Sergei Brylin tallies and a Randy McKay goal just 12:52 into the game that opened up a 3-0 lead and chased Pittsburgh starter Jean-Sebastien Aubin in favor of backup Rich Parent. Following the goaltending change, the Penguins, owners of five players who scored at least 27 goals, began chipping away at New Jersey’s advantage. Jan Hrdina scored less than four minutes after McKay’s tally to cut the Devils’ lead to 3-1 after 20 minutes. Pittsburgh then took over in the second period, ripping off three consecutive goals — two by Kovalev and one by Kevin Stevens, to take a 4-3 lead into the final frame. As Parent stood tall in the Pittsburgh net, it appeared as though the Penguins were going to be able to protect that 4-3 lead as the clock wound down in regulation. Unfortunately, a cross-checking penalty against the Penguins Jeff Norton put New Jersey on a late power play, where Devils captain Scott Stevens sent the game into overtime by scoring at 15:48 to tie the score at 4-4. In a pivotal game between Atlantic Division rivals, Kovalev ensured the Penguins would earn the coveted extra point when he beat Martin Brodeur for his league-leading 33rd goal of the season just seconds into overtime, capping his third of four hat tricks for the season and the second of three he would record in a 16-day span.

After goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury earned his 18th career shutout against the New York Islanders on Jan. 25, a reporter asked head coach Dan Bylsma following the game how the Penguins goaltender had turned his season around after getting off to a 1-6 start. “It’s a stretch of play that he’s had for such a long period, it’s so long that I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Bylsma responded. Those seven starts are now water under the bridge for Fleury, who has been at the top of his game in the three months since. After getting Marc-Andre Fleury had an impressive night in goal on February 2 against pulled against the New York Rangers, stopping all seven shooters in a shootout. Phoenix on Nov. 6 when he allowed two goals in seven minutes, Fleury responded by going on a 13-0-1 unbeaten run that tied for the longest unbeaten stretch of his career. He’s been a workhorse between the pipes for the Penguins ever since, getting the nod in 29 of Pittsburgh’s last 33 games as of Feb. 2. He’s also climbed to the top of many goaltending statistical categories. As of Feb. 2, he ranked fourth (tied) with 24 wins, sixth with a 2.20 goals-against average and seventh (tied) with a .924 save percentage. Fleury was especially impressive in the shootout against the New York Rangers on Feb. 1, stopping all seven shooters he faced to improve to 3-1 in shootouts for the season and 22-14 all-time. He entered the Feb. 2 tilt against the New York Islanders riding a six-game winning streak where he allowed just 10 goals while stopping 179 of 189 shots. During the streak Fleury owned a 1.64 goals-against average and .947 save percentage. “I just try to do my job like I usually do,” Fleury said, whose outstanding play got him named to his first-ever All-Star Team this season. “We have gotten some wins lately, so it’s been fun.” “Early on this season, after a few games where we didn’t get the result and [Fleury] wasn’t feeling too good about his game, he’s certainly turned it around,” Bylsma added.

FLEURY TAKES HIS GAME TO ANOTHER LEVEL

“Again, we go back to the Tampa Bay game, where you come back here and the fans cheer him on to a great performance, and since then he’s been the backbone of our team in kind of the typical fashion you see from Marc-Andre. He’ll make the big save, but in addition to that, he’s had long periods of time where he’s just been real solid and been the backbone of our team.” Fleury’s last three months of play has arguably been his most consistent stretch of hockey since entering the league in 2003. Since Nov. 12, the Penguins netminder posted an impressive 23-5-2 record, 1.88 goals-against average and .938 save percentage in 30 starts as of Feb. 2, allowing two or fewer goals in 21 of those starts. “I think he’s been good all year,” defenseman Brooks Orpik said. “I don’t think we played too well in front of him in the beginning of the year, I think everybody was all over him for the mistakes we were making. But he’s been good all year. He’s consistent.” Orpik, Pittsburgh’s first-round pick (18th overall) in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, is the Penguins’ longest-tenured player, having been with the organization the past seven years. He’s played in front of Fleury every year that the Penguins goaltender has been in the league, and has seen him develop his game amidst flashes of brilliance. And according to Orpik, Fleury’s play has reached the point where it’s by far the best he’s performed night in, night out over such a long period of time. “You always saw, even when he was 18, he had really, really good games, making 50 saves [a night],” Orpik said. “But this is by far the most consistent he’s been.” Bylsma agreed. “He’s always had the propensity to make that big save and be that guy for us,” he said. “But to be solid in scrums, solid in every aspect and real consistent in his play, this is probably the Since entering the league in 2003, Fleury’s most highest level we’ve seen him consistent play has been in the last three months. at for a long period of time.”

PENS PROFILE KRIS LETANG

When defenseman Sergei Gonchar left the Penguins via free agency this past summer, it felt like the end of an era. But for Kris Letang, it sounded like opportunity knocking. Gonchar got a lot of minutes, including a ton of power-play time. His departure to Ottawa meant a lot of his duties fell to Letang. The 23-year-old defenseman has responded in style, compiling seven goals and 34 assists in his first 51 games and earning his first All-Star Game berth. Letang’s 41 points ranked him sixth among NHL defenseman as of Feb. 1. His plus-21 mark placed him tied for seventh among all players. “It’s always sad when you see a guy leaving, especially when he’s there for a while,” Letang said. “But I saw an opportunity to step up, to take more ice time. It was the right timing for me.” Letang’s expanded role not only expanded his stats, it expanded his recognition. He collected 477,960 All-Star votes, most among defensemen and second-highest among all players, trailing only teammate Sidney Crosby. Not bad considering he wasn’t even on the ballot. Letang waded through the electoral process as a write-in candidate. “It’s amazing what the fans did,” Letang said. “They took the time to write me in, text it, any possible way to put my name in there. It just shows how good our fans are here in Pittsburgh.” Much of Letang’s recent success is owed to simplicity.

For example: “I try to release my shot quicker. Sometimes I get the hard shot or the one-timer. But most of the time, five-on-five, I just try to put it there. We always have some guys going to the net trying to tip the puck. I worked on it. I put a little less speed on the puck now. I just try to hit the net, or the stick of one of our guys.” Letang also credits his usual partner, Brooks Orpik. “I think I’ve improved a lot in the defensive zone,” Letang said. “There are a few aspects I still want to work on. Me and Brooksy have played pretty well against the [other teams’] top lines. The key is to simplify things. Just play and don’t worry about anything else. “Brooksy is a guy that’s easy to play with. He’s really reliable defensively. Physical. He takes up a lot of space on the ice. Anytime I want to go on offense, I know he’s going to back me up. He’s really improved his game with the puck compared to previous years. He’s always been a hard-hitter, always played well defensively. Now he’s stepped up his game with the puck.” Letang had a solid All-Star Game, scoring twice for Team Staal in an 11-10 loss to Team Lidstrom. The game took place Jan. 30 at Raleigh, N.C. Letang (6 feet, 201 pounds) then returned to a Penguins team lacking superstar centers Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, both out injured. Yet the Penguins persevered, winning three of their first four games minus their explosive 1-2 punch. “When you lose those two guys, creating offense is going to be a little harder,” Letang said. “We need to simplify things. On the power play, we need to put the puck on net and have three guys converge. Five-on-five, just work down low and tire their defense out.” Despite his offensive prowess, Letang doesn’t feel the need to produce more in the absence of Crosby and Malkin. “No, I don’t think so,” said the Quebec native. “I want to keep playing my game. If we have to win 1-0, 2-1, that’s fine. My job is to defend.” Letang is quickly becoming a high-profile player. His teammates have tagged him with a high-profile nickname: Cinco Ocho, Letang’s No. 58 in fractured Spanish, a reverse of notorious Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Ochocinco [nee Johnson]. “I think that’s a name [Mike Rupp] made for me,” Letang said, laughing. “Whatever they want to call me, I will take it.”
