AROUND THE NHL HERITAGE CLASSIC Outdoor hockey fever is still going strong as the Calgary Flames and the Montreal Canadiens are preparing to face off in the 2011 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic on Feb. 20. The Canadiens are skating in their second Heritage Classic while the Flames, who are playing in their first-ever outdoor game, will be the hosts. The game is to be played at McMahon Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Preparations have already begun, as the truck that handles the ice-making duties for the Heritage Classic officially hit the road to Calgary on Feb. 1. The Heritage Classic will be the NHL’s first regular-season game contested outdoors in Canada since the Edmonton Oilers hosted the Canadiens in the first Heritage Classic at Commonwealth Stadium on Nov. 22, 2003. There have been four NHL Winter Classics in the time since, with all of those contests being played in the United States.
The tight battle in the Western Conference for a playoff spot continues. While Vancouver, Detroit and Dallas have been occupying the top-three spots for most of the season, the other five spots are a free-for-all — and right now, it’s the Flames who are making a strong case for a postseason bid. The Flames’ 4-2 win over Atlanta on Feb. 4 marked their sixth-consecutive win and the first in their former host city, putting Calgary at 8-1-1 overall in their past 10 contests. Calgary had been 0-5-1 in their six visits to Atlanta since the Thrashers entered the National Hockey League in 1999, 19 years after the Flames returned to Alberta. They had played in Atlanta as an expansion franchise from 1972-80. The victory gave the Flames 58 points, tying them with Chicago and Los Angeles. All three teams are just one point behind seventh-place Minnesota and eighth-place Phoenix, who hold the final two playoff spots with 59 points apiece.

Detroit’s Johan Franzen accomplished what no other Red Wing has been able to do in an opponent’s arena over the franchise’s 85-year history when he scored five goals in a 7-5 victory over Ottawa at Scotiabank Place on Feb. 2. It was the first five-goal effort from a Red Wing since Sergei Federov tallied five in a 5-4 overtime win over Washington on Dec. 26, 1996. It was also the first fivegoal game in the NHL since Dec. 20, 2007 when Marian Gaborik, then with Minnesota, scored five against the New York Rangers — his current team. Johan Franzen

RON BURKLE Ron Burkle has now added a new arena — Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center — to his tremendous list of accomplishments in the business world. Burkle, widely recognized as one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 12th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have developed one of the outstanding ownership groups in all of professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his role in negotiations for the new arena deal. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for three-plus seasons and established new standards for television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits while winning acclaim as the No. 1 team in professional sports in Fan Relations. A consistent post-season threat on the ice, the Penguins reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009 and won the Cup in 2009. Young stars such as Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Jordan Staal and others have been signed to long-term contracts, ensuring that the team’s core will remain intact. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League and the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy. He has received numerous awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year and the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year award.

MARIO LEMIEUX Mario Lemieux always will be remembered for the magic he created on the ice, but one of the crowning achievements of his remarkable career came this season in his role as a businessman — the opening of CONSOL Energy Center, home of the Penguins and Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue. The new arena puts the exclamation point on Lemieux’s lengthy quest to ensure the Penguins’ long-term future in Pittsburgh and provides his adopted hometown with a spectacular state-of-the-art center for professional and collegiate sports, concerts, family shows and other events. “There were so many people who contributed to this project, including local and state political leaders, local business leaders, NHL officials and, of course, our fans,” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse, “but I think it’s safe to say that none of this happens without Mario Lemieux.” Even before the reality of CONSOL Energy Center, Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle had turned the Penguins into a premier NHL franchise, winning praise for off-ice business accomplishments in addition to creating a positive, player-friendly atmosphere on the hockey side. The Penguins have sold out a team-record 186 straight games, sold out every suite for three straight seasons and established records for local television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits. Over the summer, the Penguins were named the No. 1 team in professional sports in Fan Relations by ESPN The Magazine. Oh, and they won the Stanley Cup in 2009 — the third Cup of Lemieux’s career but his first as an owner. Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVPs trophies and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP, in addition to the two Cups. An immaculately gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $8 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario, his wife Nathalie and their four children live in Sewickley.

DAVID MOREHOUSE Pittsburgh native David Morehouse was named CEO of the Penguins in September and leads the team into an exciting new era at CONSOL Energy Center. Morehouse had served as team president since 2007, overseeing ticket sales, marketing, corporate sales, communications and brand development, as well as representing the team in corporate relations and governmental affairs. Under his leadership the Penguins have become one of the top organizations in professional sports — ranked No. 1 in Fan Relations and No. 5 overall as a franchise among 122 pro teams in North America by ESPN The Magazine. As team president, Morehouse implemented a brand strategy that featured a new commitment to marketing, fan interaction and community outreach, as well as a targeted focus on the team’s young fan demographic. Under his leadership, the Penguins have sold out every game for three straight seasons — the sellout streak was at 166 games entering 2010-11— while leading all U.S.-based NHL teams in local TV ratings last season and setting new standards for website traffic and social media. Morehouse joined the Penguins in December, 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project, following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill, as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He was Senior Advisor for the John Kerry for President campaign in 2004, traveling on the campaign plane and serving as Senator Kerry’s traveling chief of staff. He worked in the Clinton-Gore White House in the 1990s, and was Senior Counselor and Trip Director for Vice President Al Gore from 1999-2001. Morehouse grew up in the Beechview section on Pittsburgh. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University, and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Vanessa, have three children and live in Bell Acres.

RAY SHERO Ray Shero, 48, is at the vanguard of the NHL’s new breed of general managers — steeped in family hockey tradition but on the cutting-edge of new technology and modernization in hockey operations, player relations and team management. His fresh ideas and calm but firm management style helped transform the Penguins from a team that did not qualify for the playoffs in 2005-06 to one that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2007-08 and won the Cup in 2008-09. During that time, he has moved boldly to ensure a strong future for the Penguins, signing six key members of the team’s core — Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Jordan Staal, Brooks Orpik and Kris Letang — to long-term contracts. Shero built on the team’s already strong foundation by adding key pieces in the 2010 offseason to set the Penguins up for long-term success. With shrewd maneuvering and an aggressive approach during the first day of free agency, he solidified the team’s blue line with the long-term signings of top-rated defensemen Paul Martin and Zbynek Michalek. Shero was named GM on May 25, 2006 and one of his first acts was to declare a goal of building a team that could compete for championships on a yearly basis. He revamped the team’s hockey operations staff and structure, upgraded professional and amateur scouting, added a team operations director and opened new lines of communication with the business side of the organization. In his first season, 2006-07, Shero led his team to its first playoff berth since 2001 and a 47-point improvement in the standings — the fourth-largest improvement from one season to the next in NHL history. Building on that success, the Penguins topped 100 points for the second straight season in 2007-08, winning their first division title since 1998 and advancing to the Stanley Cup Final, where they fell to Detroit. After a rocky start in 2008-09, the Penguins rallied when Bylsma was named head coach in February, finishing 18-3-4 to earn a playoff berth and then defeating Philadelphia, Washington, Carolina and Detroit en route to the Stanley Cup. Along the way, they twice overcame 2-0 deficits in games (against Washington and Detroit), won all four seriesclinching games on the road and won two Game Sevens on the road — including the 2-1 thriller at Detroit for the Cup. Ray’s father, Fred, had won two Stanley Cups as head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers in 1974 and 1975. The Sheros are one of the few father-son tandems to appear on the Cup. The late Fred Shero also was a coach and general manager with the New York Rangers. Ray built his hockey sense and managerial style during 14 seasons as an NHL assistant general manager — six with the Ottawa Senators and eight with the Nashville Predators. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University, twice serving as team captain, and was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1982. He spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. The native of St. Paul, Minn. is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.

JASON BOTTERILL Jason Botterill enters his second full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position on May 22, 2009 by general manager Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockeyrelated matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top-minor league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 34, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins; his responsibilities included salary cap management, professional and amateur scouting and overseeing prospects development. Botterill’s avant-garde approach and understanding of the salary cap has been a major asset for the Penguins. Before joining Pittsburgh, Botterill worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was a first-round draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in 1994 and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo. He also played 393 career games in the AHL and IHL, recording 127 goals and 257 points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four seasons at the University of Michigan, where he earned his MBA, and helped lead the Wolverines to the NCAA title in 1996. He also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in 1994, 1995 and 1996, helping his team win gold medals in all three tournaments. He resides in Pittsburgh along with his wife, Andrea.

In just one-plus seasons behind the bench, Dan Bylsma has already become one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history. After being promoted to Penguins head coach in February 2009, Bylsma, 40, directed the team to its third Stanley Cup in franchise history — a feat previously accomplished by legendary coaches “Badger” Bob Johnson and Scott Bowman. In the process Bylsma became the 14th rookie head coach, and just the fourth in the past 50 years, to capture the Stanley Cup. Of those 14, only Montreal’s Al MacNeil (1970-71) took over mid-season. Bylsma has the best regular-season winning percentage (.659) in team history, and is tied with Bowman for most postseason victories (23) and series victories (5). He also became the eighth-fastest head coach in NHL history to hit the 50-win mark (78 games). All-time under Bylsma, the Penguins boast a 65-31-11 regular-season record; 35-13-5 home record; 31-17-6 road mark; 40-3-3 when leading after two periods; 42-1-1 when scoring four or more goals; and 43-9-6 when scoring first. In 2009-10 the Grand Haven, Mich. native completed his first full NHL season behind the bench for Pittsburgh, leading the club to a 47-28-7 record for 101 points — breaking 100 points for the sixth time in franchise history and for the third time in the last four years — finishing only two points behind New Jersey for the Atlantic Division title. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons as a right winger with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-2004. He played 429 NHL regular-season games, recording 19 goals and 62 points, and also played in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final with Anaheim. He began his coaching career as an assistant with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks of the AHL in 2004-05 and made his NHL coaching debut as an assistant with the New York Islanders in 2005-06. Bylsma was an assistant coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for two seasons from 2006-08 and was named head coach at the start of the 2008-09 season. He went 35-16-1-2 in 54 games with WB/S before being promoted to Pittsburgh. He played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son and reside in the North Hills.

Reirden, completed his first full season as WB/S head coach in 2009-10, leading a young and inexperienced team to an impressive 41-34-2-3 record, finishing third in the East Division, and a berth in the Calder Cup playoffs. THE PENGUINS Pittsburgh begins a three-game road trip tomorrow night against the New York Islanders and will visit the New York Rangers on Sunday afternoon and the Colorado Avalanche next Wednesday night . The Penguins’ next home game is Feb . 21 against Washington . . . The Penguins won their fourth straight game last Wednesday night here at CONSOL Energy Center in a night for the history books . For starters, the Penguins beat the Islanders, 3-0, to record their 11th consecutive home win against New York — the most in team history against one team . . . Given their 1-0 home win over the Islanders the previous week, it also marked the first time in team history the Penguins had recorded shutouts in consecutive home games . . . Goaltender Brent Johnson put the exclamation mark on the win by knocking down New York goaltender Rick DiPietro in a fight with 17 seconds to play — the first fight between two goaltenders in a home game in team history . Since he was given a game misconduct, Johnson was replaced by Fleury, and the two earned the third shared shutout in team history — and first ever on home ice . . . Johnson was the first Pittsburgh goaltender to earn a fighting major since Ken Wregget in Game Six against the Capitals in the 1995 playoffs, and he was the first Pittsburgh goaltender to fight on home ice in 27 years since Denis Herron took on Toronto forward Tiger Williams on Feb . 29, 1984 . . . Mark Letestu was expected to miss four to six weeks after having arthroscopic knee surgery . He was hurt in the morning skate Feb . 1 at Madison Square Garden . . . Malkin returned to the Pittsburgh lineup last Friday night here against Buffalo after missing five games with knee and sinus problems but left that game with a serious knee injury .
The Penguins beat the Islanders, 3-0, on Feb . 2 to record their 11th consecutive home win against New York — the most in team history against one team .

This is the fourth game of a 10-game road trip for Los Angeles, which has had four days off since playing in Calgary last Saturday. The Kings will play in Washington on Saturday afternoon and then visit Philadelphia, Columbus, the Rangers, Islanders and Anaheim before returning home Feb. 24 to host Minnesota. That starts a 15-game stretch in which the Kings play 11 times at home. . . The trip began Feb. 1 with a 1-0 shootout loss at Minnesota, though the Kings rebounded for a 3-1 win in Edmonton in the second game. . . Stoll was stopped on a penalty shot by the Oilers’ Nikolai Khabibulin in that game . . . The Kings were one point out of a playoff spot in the Western Conference before facing the Flames.
The Kings will play 11 of their 15 games after Feb. 24 at home.

MIKE LANGE One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange enters his 35th season with the Penguins and will handle radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.
PHIL BOURQUE Two-time Stanley Cup champion Phil Bourque begins his seventh season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75+89) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88+111) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for FSN Pittsburgh’s coverage of Penguins hockey.
BOB GROVE After a 17-year career as the Penguins beat writer for the Washington Observer-Reporter, Bob Grove joined the team’s radio broadcasts in 1998 as a frequent studio host/co-host and is now in his sixth season as full-time host of the pre- and post-game broadcasts and intermissions on the Penguins Hockey Network. Grove wrote Pittsburgh Penguins: The Official History of the First 30 Years in 1997 and has contributed game notes to GOAL Magazine inserts or Icetime programs for every Pittsburgh home game since 1986. He was also a contributor to the second edition of Total Hockey and to The Game I’ll Never Forget. He is a senior writer covering hockey for the Pittsburgh Sports Report and also hosts “Heineken Hockey Hour” and “Bob Grove’s Hot Stove” on Penguins Radio at 105.9-HD 2.

Fans are encouraged roll up their sleeves and Score One for Life by participating in this lifesaving effort. Fans will also have the opportunity to meet Penguins Alumni, broadcasters, plus interact with Penguins mascot Iceburgh and American Red Cross mascot the Blood Hound. The Score One for Life Blood Drive has been a commitment to the local community by the Penguins organization and fans since 1992. Donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements. Individuals should bring their Red Cross blood donor card or other form of positive ID when coming to donate. PENS PROFILE BRENT JOHNSON
Shutout. Knockout. Thrown out. Call it the Brent Johnson hat trick. The Penguins’ No. 2 goaltender was just 16.5 seconds away from the 15th shutout of his NHL career Feb. 2 at CONSOL Energy Center when New York Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro left his crease to take a whack at the Penguins’ Matt Cooke. Mayhem ensued, and the only Islander without a dance partner was DiPietro. Johnson and DiPietro exchanged glances, then headed straight for each other. But the fight didn’t last long. Johnson threw one punch, a left. That’s all it took to drop DiPietro and electrify a soldout home crowd. Johnson’s teammates, too. “That was awesome,” said Marc-Andre Fleury, who finished the 3-0 win in goal after Johnson was ejected. “He was so calm, so relaxed. It was just, boom! His expression never changed. It was just, boom! — and that was it.” Said Mike Rupp, “It was like a video game or something. It was funny watching Johnny go down there and how confident he was.” All Johnson could do was smile.
Brent Johnson and Rick DiPietro squared off in a rare goalie fight on Feb. 2.

“The guys were excited,” Johnson said. “They didn’t know I had that little mean streak in me. It was something I’ve kind of wanted to do. Maybe it was a little bit of frustration at some things, and it all came out tonight.” Frustration at what, exactly? “I never saw Led Zeppelin, and I never will see a reunion,” said Johnson, a devout Led Zep fan but reaching a bit. “It was something I was kind of looking forward to having an opportunity to do, and it just happened.” Leaving DiPietro dazed and confused was only part of Johnson’s night. He made 20 saves to help the Penguins run their record without Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin (both injured) to 4-1. “I felt great in net,” said Johnson, 33. “But five shots in the first period, seven in the second, eight in the third — the guys played very well in front of me, and I felt confident, too. The communication was great tonight.” Johnson got his 6-foot-3, 199-pound frame out after the shooters, challenging the Islanders to great effect. “When I’m on my best game, I tend to challenge a little bit more,” Johnson said. “You don’t want to get comfortable in net, and too deep. I’m not quick like [the New York Rangers’] Henrik Lundqvist, so I’ve got to come out and challenge. Put a big body in front.” Johnson attributes the Penguins’ success without Crosby and Malkin to simplicity: “Chipping it in and

going to work. Doing the details of the game. Things we’ve been working on in practice coming to fruition.” Johnson wasn’t upset about losing a shutout. The blank job goes into the record books as split between Johnson and Fleury. “I don’t have a big thing about shutouts,” Johnson said. “For me, it’s just about keeping the guys in the game.” When asked about his previous pugilistic experience, Johnson said, “That was my first time in the NHL. I had a couple of fights in the minors, and a lot in juniors. This was the first opportunity I really had [in the NHL]. We’re up 3-0, DiPietro came out and hit one of our guys — I’m not going to get a better opportunity. I jumped at it. I hoped to have a good showing, and I did.” DiPietro’s face was said to be rapidly swelling in the Islanders’ locker room. But on the ice, Johnson said, “He was good. He just asked me if I was a lefty or not, and I said I wasn’t. I just got a lucky punch in. “I’ll take [a knockout over a shutout]. But I didn’t intend to hurt anyone. It was just a lucky punch.”
Johnson made 20 saves on Feb. 2 for the team and was awarded a split shutout after Fleury stepped in for the last few seconds. Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

TONIGHT’S COMPETITORS ARE:
ROUND ONE HEAT SEVEN: NORTH PITTSBURGH WILDCATS A MAJOR GOLD VS. PITTSBURGH ICE The one-on-one competition features Kyle Wittingham/ Jake Curry from North Pittsburgh Wildcats A Major Gold against Nathan Norkevicus/ Arn Crisswell from Pittsburgh ICE. You can also view this and previously shown competitions at pittsburghpenguins.com.
On Saturday, October 16, sixteen youth hockey teams from the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) in the Pee Wee age group (age 11 - 12) participated in a shootout competition at CONSOL Energy Center. The event was videotaped to be shown in episodes at Penguins home games. The first round of competition featured heats between two teams striving to advance to the next round. Sixteen teams fielded five skaters shooting against the opposing team’s goalie. After each team competition, an individual shooter and goaltender squared off against the opposing team’s individual tandem for a one-on-one competition. Each winning team and pair of individuals advanced to the next round of eight teams/tandems. The format repeated as teams and individual pairs advanced through the quarterfinal heats to move on to the semi-finals. Robust competition marked the semi-final round for teams and individual tandems. The remaining two teams and individual tandems then had to “leave it all on the ice” in vying for the championship. Early in the second intermission of each Penguins home game the various heats in the competition will be featured. Enjoy each episode.

I feel
.
Ask a grieving child how they’re feeling and you may get a lot of answers. Or none at all. For many, finding the words to express their feelings can be difficult. But while finding the right words may not be easy, finding the right place to turn to for help can be. At the Caring Place, we’re here when grieving children need someone to listen, to talk, or to just sit and be. For more information about one of our peer support groups or to volunteer, call us today.

OUR NEW HOME CONSOL Energy Center opened in August, 2010 as Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue — home of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins as well as other professional and collegiate sports, concerts, children’s shows, skating shows and more. It replaced the old Civic Arena/Mellon Arena, which had operated since 1961 and was home of the Penguins from their inception in 1967. It was the oldest arena in the National Hockey League. “CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins,” said David Morehouse, CEO of the hockey team. “With open concourses, comfortable seating, cutting-edge technology, a state-of-the-art scoreboard and sound system, and an extensive array of food and beverage options, it is

It is a green building and is the first NHL arena to attain LEED Gold certification. In its first few months, CONSOL Energy Center also hosted such acts as Lady Gaga and The Eagles; was home to the Pittsburgh College Hockey Showcase with Robert Morris; and featured multiple NCAA Division I basketball games, including the “City Game” between Pitt and Duquesne and the Big East/SEC Challenge. In its first season of operation, CONSOL Energy Center also will be home to the Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League — bringing indoor football back to the city for the first time in almost 20 years. A funding plan for the new arena project was completed in March, 2007, thanks to the combined efforts of Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, among others. The Sports & Exhibition Authority owns the building on behalf of the city and county, and the Penguins have the lease. The new arena is managed by SMG, with Jay Roberts serving as general manager.
The CONSOL Energy Center has already hosted acts such as Paul McCartney, The Eagles, and Lady Gaga. It was home to the Pittsburgh College Hockey Showcase with Robert Morris and has featured multiple NCAA Division I basketball games.

MY HOMETOWN: ERIC GODARD
VERNON, BRITISH COLUMBIA What was it like growing up in Vernon? It was great. You have the lakes and the sun and the mountains. You pretty much had everything going on up there for every season. What did you do during the summer? I used to go on the beach, go swimming and go in the woods and go camping. There are a lot of lakes you can go to and hike around and then camp out overnight. Where did you and your friends hang out? We used to hang out by the docks down by the lake. What’s an underrated part of your hometown? People don’t really know about all the outdoor activities. There are motorbike trails and loads of lakes hidden in the hills. What was your favorite restaurant? A place called Country Time. What is something people don’t know about your hometown? We have a local lake monster, Ogopogo. He hasn’t been sighted in a while. What was your favorite part about growing up there? Just the town and being with all my friends. All you had to do is go outside and in five minutes you could be gone and lost away from everything.

WHAT’S HAPPENING DEVELOPMENTAL PROGRAMS LEARN TO PLAY HOCKEY With the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and Dick’s Sporting Goods over the last three years the Penguins have provided over 2,200 sets of equipment free to local youth ages 4 to 7. This year, four girls-only programs will operate along side of our standard co-ed Little Penguins program. OPEN PRACTICE The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation presented the 2010 Pittsburgh Penguins Open Hockey Practice on Thursday, December 9, 2010 at the brand new CONSOL Energy Center. The event offered a rare opportunity for over 10,000 school students in grades one through eight from across Allegheny County to see the Pittsburgh Penguins at work. Students were entertained leading up to the start of practice with informational videos about behind-thescenes aspects of the team/facility, as well as educational elements related to the game (geography, math, etc.) each student received an activity book as a takeaway.
WELLNESS TRAINING K.A.M.P. AT UPMC SOUTHSIDE Presented by UPMC Sports Medicine and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. Young hockey players were divided into groups and performed a rotation of 10-minute drills, while UPMC Sports Medicine professionals provided assessments. While the athletes trained, their parents received lectures on nutrition, concussions and sports injuries in general. Over 150 athletes and parents attended the event.
132
CONCUSSION PROGRAM The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, in conjunction with UPMC Sports Medicine, are prepared to announce a comprehensive program for baseline testing and concussion education for all youth sports beginning at the earliest possible ages.
PENGUINS FOUNDATION CHARITY ASSIST RAFFLE The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Penguins Foundation are pleased to host the Penguins Foundation Charity ASSIST Raffle, raising money for a variety of local charities in the western Pennsylvania area. Look for ticket sellers in their red aprons at every home game. The minimum prize each game is $2,000!
NEW SPORTS INITIATIVES — COMING IN 2011 OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES In its efforts to fight the sedentary tendencies of America’s youth, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation is excited to offer outdoor programs to promote fun and organized physical activity. The program, to be revealed in January, is designed to take advantage of the growing popularity of hockey in the tri-state area by affording young players access to existing facilities and newly constructed outdoor multi-use athletic facilities. These programs provide safe areas to play games under the supervision of established organizations. SCHOOL PROGRAMS • FIRST STRIDE In the ultimate Field Trip, participating schools will be provided with a Penguins-themed hockey experience: Students will be transported to and from a local ice arena, outfitted in full hockey equipment and learn fundamental hockey skills. The program will conclude with each child scoring their first goal! • GYM CLASS FOR A DAY This program is designed for 4th and 5th grade physical education classes and will provide basic skills and game instruction. Gym Class for a Day will transform your school gymnasium or parking lot into a dek/ball hockey rink. The Penguins will provide equipment for an ongoing P.E. Hockey Program. Penguins staff will be on hand to assist P.E. teachers in demonstrating and administering basic hockey skills and games. Each student will be provided a hockey ball and Penguins t-shirt to take home and continue practicing their skills.

FOX CHAPEL WINS BIG AGAINST BALDWIN The first-place Fox Chapel Foxes showed why they’re undefeated with their dominating performance against the Baldwin Fighting Highlanders on Feb. 3 at the Ice Castle. A penalty eight minutes into the game by Baldwin gave Fox Chapel their first power play of the night. The Foxes did not wait long to capitalize, as Will Lorenz took a slap shot from the point off the faceoff that went over the shoulder of Highlanders goaltender Zach Christman and into the net. Lorenz was not done scoring in the period as he was able to get his second powerplay goal of the game less than six minutes later. Lorenz took a shot that deflected off a Baldwin defender and past Christman to give Fox Chapel a 2-0 lead. The start of the second period brought more of the same, as Fox Chapel scored their third power-play goal of the game. This time it was Ethan Schollaert that tallied to give the Foxes a 3-0 lead just three minutes into the second. Fox Chapel scored again about four minutes later off a goal from Jake Friedland. Fox Chapel moved up ice on a three-on-none rush and Friedland took a pass from Daniel Humes that he stuffed into an open net. Baldwin cut the Foxes’ lead to 4-1 when Josh McCue scored a power-play goal with five minutes remaining in the second, but Jake Friedland added his second tally of the game less than a minute later before Craig Mason scored on the man-advantage for Fox Chapel to increase the Foxes’ lead to 7-1. Friedland completed his hat trick with about four minutes remaining to close out the scoring for both teams. Friedland finished the game with seven points (3 goals and 4 assists), while Fox Chapel remained undefeated with the 8-1 win over Baldwin.

STAPLES CENTER Unfortunately for the Penguins, it appears as though they will probably have to play the remainder of this season without the services of Evgeni Malkin, who tore his ACL and MCL against the Buffalo Sabres on Feb. 4. When Malkin returns in 2011-12, fans can only hope he sprints out of the gate like he did during his rookie season in 2006-07. Evgeni Malkin scored the game winning power-play goal in overtime against Malkin, who missed the first four LA Kings goaltender Dan Cloutier. games that season with a shoulder injury suffered in the preseason, returned to score goals in each of his first six career regular-season games — including a pair of goals on Nov. 1, 2006 in a 4-3 win against the Los Angeles Kings — to become the fourth player, and first in 89 years, to score goals in each of his first six National Hockey League contests. Neither team wasted much time getting on the scoreboard, as the Penguins and Kings exchanged tallies within the first 1:15 minutes when Mike Cammalleri found the back of the net just 25 seconds in and Jordan Staal responded for the Penguins by beating Dan Cloutier 50 seconds later. Pittsburgh then took its first lead — and Malkin entered the history books — midway through the opening frame. The Penguins Colby Armstrong forced a turnover behind the Kings’ net with a hard hit on the forecheck, allowing Sidney Crosby to swoop in and pick up the biscuit. Crosby then fed Malkin in the slot for a one-timer and a 2-1 Pittsburgh lead. That lead held until 13 seconds into the second period when Dustin Brown tied the score at 2-2, and then the Kings took their final lead of the night, 3-2, just 4:41 minutes later on a Rob Blake power-play marker. Defenseman Noah Welch tied the game for the Penguins at the 7:47 mark of the third period. After taking a pass off the rush, Welch skated down the left seam and sent a pass towards Nils Ekman standing at the top of the crease — except that the puck never reached Ekman, instead hitting the skate of Los Angeles defender Mattias Norstrom and jumping into the net. Malkin capped his first-ever two goal performance on a power play halfway through the extra period as he made Cloutier pay by slapping the rebound of Gonchar’s shot just passed Cloutier’s outstretched glove for the game-winning goal in a 4-3 Penguins’ victory that ran Pittsburgh’s winning streak to five games.

In the NHL bloopers happen, just like hat tricks. Dan Bylsma understands. In the infancy of his NHL career Bylsma found himself skating for the Los Angeles Kings on the same line as Wayne Gretzky. The Great One fired Bylsma a pass. Bylsma tried to one-time it. But instead of blasting the puck top shelf he whiffed on it completely, falling on his backside in the process. When they got back to the bench at shift’s end Gretzky went left and Bylsma right. “I never saw too much of Wayne after that,” Bylsma remembered. Bylsma didn’t let the temporary moment of embarrassment deter him, and he wound up playing 429 NHL games before eventually becoming a Stanley Cup-winning head coach with the Penguins. Even in the best league in the world, one populated by the world’s best players, such hard-to-figure hilarity is occasionally part of the game. Dan Bylsma was not discouraged by an “There are always bloopers,” embrassing moment early in his career — he went Penguins forward Matt Cooke on to play 429 games in the NHL. observed. “Any time you have people going at that pace you’re going to have mistakes or bloopers or whatever it is. “There’s stuff that happens. You hope it doesn’t happen to your team and if it does, not very often. Those are things you have to be able to overcome. You’re going to have those types of things in the game and most of them are uncontrollable.” Sometimes such “stuff” is harmless, although no less humorous or unforeseen.

During the Penguins’ 3-0 win over the New York Islanders on Feb. 2 at CONSOL Energy Center forward Craig Adams came up with what NHL.com dubbed a “hole in one.” Adams fired a shot that deflected off the stick of goalie Rick DiPietro and up onto the top of the net and then into the cup that holds the water bottle (which was sitting on top of the net next to the cup). “That’s gotta count for something,” FSN analyst Bob Errey insisted. Other “stuff” can prove more damaging and yet FEBRUARY 2 VS ISLANDERS: still hilarious. A Craig Adams shot deflected Pucks that have been hard-rimmed into an off the stick of Rick DiPietro, bounced up and landed in the cup opponent’s end sometimes take freak bounces off the that holds the water bottle glass, leaving a waiting goalie exasperated behind the for a “hole in one”. cage and the net wide open for an easy goal. Sticks get caught in the boards and stay there. Teammates collide at high speed. And occasionally, an own-goal occurs when a player inadvertently clears the puck into a net that has been vacated because of a delayed penalty. The best of this season’s bloopers have included the New Jersey Devils’ Ilya Kovalchuk losing control of the puck and failing to register a shot on what turned out to be a game-deciding shootout attempt and the Tampa Bay Lightning’s Steven Stamkos losing an edge and hitting the deck on a penalty shot on Jan. 5 at CONSOL Energy Center. Stamkos didn’t get a shot off, either. The players are as entertained as anyone by such moments. “We see tapes of our games and you see guys just falling down all by themselves at the blueline,” goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury said. “We laugh at them, both sides. “We laugh at everybody.” Fleury even managed to laugh off his most embarrassing moment as a professional. That was when he tripped and fell face first while leading the Penguins onto the ice at Joe Louis Arena for Game One of the 2008 Stanley Cup Final. “My first Final game,” he recounted. “I was very nervous before the game. When I fell, I was like, ‘Oh my God.’ I just looked like a fool, you know? “I just laughed at myself and it kinda calmed me down a little bit, like, ‘Well, I doubt I can look any dumber than that.’ I just laughed at myself and I was fine after that.” In retrospect, Fleury knows exactly what happened. “Every game I was running through the doors to jump onto the ice,” he said. “In Detroit the doors are not as wide. I knew it but I still had to do it because I had done it all playoffs. So I went for it. “The side of the door hit my pad and I tripped myself. It can happen to anybody.” A year later, Fleury was able to successfully navigate the very same doorway in the boards and head back into the locker room a Stanley Cup champion after defeating the Red Wings 2-1 in Game Seven. But he won’t say he got the last laugh because he’s pretty sure that hasn’t happened yet. “I still hear about it,” he said. “I’m sure I will for a long time.” Mike Prisuta is the sports director for WDVE-FM and the sports anchor for “Jim, Randy & the DVE Morning Show.”

THE “MAN IN BLACK” REVEALED Brent Johnson did his best impression of Rocky Balboa last week as he headed down the ice toward New York Islanders goaltender Rick DiPietro and knocked him down with a single blow. But there is a lot more to Brent Johnson than that left hook. Johnson’s work ethic and goaltending abilities alone make him a valuable asset to the Penguins. Throw his loyalty and leadership skills into the mix, and you have a recipe for the ultimate professional. The effect that “Johnny” has on the Penguins behind the scenes is remarkable, and head coach Dan Bylsma certainly appreciates what the veteran goaltender brings to the table.
Brent Johnson has been dubbed the “Man in Black” by members of the media due to his black pads.
“He has been an exceptional backup goalie,” Bylsma said. “He is a great teammate to [Marc-Andre Fleury] especially, and he is a great teammate to everyone. He is a guy we count on and he is a leader in our room.” Johnson, 33, has played just four games since Dec. 15 but has a .953 save percentage in that span. He’s backstopped his way to an impressive 9-4-2 overall record as of Feb. 4, allowing two-or-fewer goals in 11 of his 14 starts this season. His ability as a goalie who can step in and win games for his team at a crucial time was proved during October, when Johnson went 5-0-1 in that month. But Johnson, who is in his second season with the Penguins after signing a free-agent contract with the team on July 21, 2009, also takes on another job in the locker room — perhaps one of the most important. He’s the Penguins’ designated locker room DJ. “DJ Johnson” takes requests from all team members, being just as reliable at picking out top songs as he is at plucking hockey pucks from the air. Johnson, who’s dubbed the “Man in Black” by members of the media due to his black pads and his nickname of Johnny, confesses to having great affection for any type of music. continued on page 173

“I am a big Led Zeppelin fan, and I am just a huge music fan in general,” Johnson said. “I love every genre. I am just starting to get into country a little bit. The guys like hearing it in the morning, so we play country every now and again. It is very soothing and very relaxing.” However, Johnson leaves playing musical instruments down to the professionals. When he first entered the National Hockey League, Johnson began playing the guitar and could string together a few classic Beatles tunes. But as his hockey career took off, the guitar playing fell by the wayside. “I play sweet air everything,” Johnson laughed. “I would love to pick up the drums. Every summer I say I will get into it but I just never find time.” When he is not rocking out to Zeppelin and strumming cords on his imaginary guitar, Johnson is enjoying life in the Pittsburgh area. And after spending his career with three different teams before joining the Penguins — St. Louis, Phoenix and Washington — Johnson feels right at home in Steel City. “I have only been here two seasons, but I love this place,” Johnson said. “I have a house back in Washington, D.C., but I consider this my home now. I am making a family here with the little one on the way. So I would love to call Pittsburgh my home.” The Farmington Hills, Mich. native broke on the scene with the St. Louis Blues in the 2000-01 season after originally being drafted in the fifth round (129th overall) in the 1995 Entry Draft by the Colorado Avalanche. His eight-plus NHL seasons have given him plenty of experience and maturity that has allowed him to become a role model to younger players, especially fellow goalie Fleury. “Johnny’s a great guy on and off the ice,” 26-year-old Fleury said. “It’s amazing how he comes to work every day with a smile on his face and is always in a good mood. He is always encouraging me, through tough times and good times. He has proved how good a goalie he is time and time again and has got some great wins for us.” The two players have a great rapport, and that relationship helps them to push each other to the limit each day in practice. Johnson is a huge fan of Fleury and values their friendship massively. Johnson grins mischievously as he speaks of his recent escapade as a fighter and how Fleury has always been there for him. “He has been great. He has always been in my corner — no pun intended.”
