AROUND THE NHL VANCOUVER IN NHL’S TOP SPOT After the Vancouver Canucks alternated wins and losses over a 10-game stretch from Feb. 9 to March 3 that saw them go 5-5 over that span, they’ve since rebounded and have placed six-straight tallies in the win column from March 5 to March 14. That surge has given them 110 points through 71 games, placing them 11 points ahead of second-place Detroit in what is otherwise an extremely tight Western Conference. It’s also given Vancouver a 10-point lead over Philadelphia for first place in the entire National Hockey League, inching the Canucks closer to the President’s Trophy, an annual award to the club finishing the regular season with the best overall record. The Canucks are looking for their first Stanley Cup since joining the NHL in 1970 as an expansion team.
GENERAL MANAGERS’ MEETINGS This year’s National Hockey League General Managers’ meetings began Monday, March 14 and ran through Wednesday, March 16 in Boca Raton, Fla. The league’s 30 general managers met to discuss the state of the game with an emphasis on player safety, specifically head hits and the impact of Rule 48, which was born at the NHL General Managers’ meetings last March. Rule 48 renders illegal any lateral or blindside hit where the head is targeted and/or becomes the principle point of contact. Since it has now been in place for almost a full season, it was examined in detail, with the GMs discussing its effectiveness and options to expand the rule’s reach.
SABRES LEGEND DIES Rick Martin, who comprised one-third of the Buffalo Sabres’ famed ‘French Connection’ line in the 1970s, died March 13 at age 59. He died in a one-car accident in Clarence, a Buffalo, N.Y. suburb, after suffering a heart attack while driving. Martin, selected by the Sabres in the first round (No. 5 overall) in the 1971 NHL Entry Draft, scored 44 goals in his first season — a rookie record at the time. He went on to score 52 goals in the 1974-75 season while teamed with Gilbert Perreault and Rene Robert on the ‘French Connection’ line that helped the Sabres to their firstRick Martin ever Stanley Cup Final appearance in 1975. Martin scored a total of 382 goals in 681 games from 1971 to 1981 with Buffalo, and his No. 7 jersey was retired by the organization on Nov. 15, 1995.

RON BURKLE Ron Burkle has now added a new arena — Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center — to his tremendous list of accomplishments in the business world. Burkle, widely recognized as one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 12th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have developed one of the outstanding ownership groups in all of professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his role in negotiations for the new arena deal. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for three-plus seasons and established new standards for television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits while winning acclaim as the No. 1 team in professional sports in Fan Relations. A consistent post-season threat on the ice, the Penguins reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009 and won the Cup in 2009. Young stars such as Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Jordan Staal and others have been signed to long-term contracts, ensuring that the team’s core will remain intact. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League and the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy. He has received numerous awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year and the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year award.

MARIO LEMIEUX Mario Lemieux always will be remembered for the magic he created on the ice, but one of the crowning achievements of his remarkable career came this season in his role as a businessman — the opening of CONSOL Energy Center, home of the Penguins and Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue. The new arena puts the exclamation point on Lemieux’s lengthy quest to ensure the Penguins’ long-term future in Pittsburgh and provides his adopted hometown with a spectacular state-of-the-art center for professional and collegiate sports, concerts, family shows and other events. “There were so many people who contributed to this project, including local and state political leaders, local business leaders, NHL officials and, of course, our fans,” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse, “but I think it’s safe to say that none of this happens without Mario Lemieux.” Even before the reality of CONSOL Energy Center, Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle had turned the Penguins into a premier NHL franchise, winning praise for off-ice business accomplishments in addition to creating a positive, player-friendly atmosphere on the hockey side. The Penguins have sold out a team-record 186 straight games, sold out every suite for three straight seasons and established records for local television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits. Over the summer, the Penguins were named the No. 1 team in professional sports in Fan Relations by ESPN The Magazine. Oh, and they won the Stanley Cup in 2009 — the third Cup of Lemieux’s career but his first as an owner. Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVPs trophies and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP, in addition to the two Cups. An immaculately gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $8 million for charity. DAVID MOREHOUSE Pittsburgh native David Morehouse was named CEO of the Penguins in September and leads the team into an exciting new era at CONSOL Energy Center. Morehouse had served as team president since 2007, overseeing ticket sales, marketing, corporate sales, communications and brand development, as well as representing the team in corporate relations and governmental affairs. Under his leadership the Penguins have become one of the top organizations in professional sports — ranked No. 1 in Fan Relations and No. 5 overall as a franchise among 122 pro teams in North America by ESPN The Magazine. As team president, Morehouse implemented a brand strategy that featured a new commitment to marketing, fan interaction and community outreach, as well as a targeted focus on the team’s young fan demographic. Under his leadership, the Penguins have sold out every game for three straight seasons — the sellout streak was at 166 games entering 2010-11— while leading all U.S.-based NHL teams in local TV ratings last season and setting new standards for website traffic and social media. Morehouse joined the Penguins in December, 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project, following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill, as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He was Senior Advisor for the John Kerry for President campaign in 2004, traveling on the campaign plane and serving as Senator Kerry’s traveling chief of staff. He worked in the Clinton-Gore White House in the 1990s, and was Senior Counselor and Trip Director for Vice President Al Gore from 1999-2001. Morehouse grew up in the Beechview section on Pittsburgh. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University, and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Vanessa, have three children and live in Bell Acres.

RAY SHERO Ray Shero, 48, is at the vanguard of the NHL’s new breed of general managers — steeped in family hockey tradition but on the cutting-edge of new technology and modernization in hockey operations, player relations and team management. His fresh ideas and calm but firm management style helped transform the Penguins from a team that did not qualify for the playoffs in 2005-06 to one that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2007-08 and won the Cup in 2008-09. During that time, he has moved boldly to ensure a strong future for the Penguins, signing six key members of the team’s core — Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Jordan Staal, Brooks Orpik and Kris Letang — to long-term contracts. Shero built on the team’s already strong foundation by adding key pieces in the 2010 offseason to set the Penguins up for long-term success. With shrewd maneuvering and an aggressive approach during the first day of free agency, he solidified the team’s blue line with the long-term signings of top-rated defensemen Paul Martin and Zbynek Michalek. Shero was named GM on May 25, 2006 and one of his first acts was to declare a goal of building a team that could compete for championships on a yearly basis. He revamped the team’s hockey operations staff and structure, upgraded professional and amateur scouting, added a team operations director and opened new lines of communication with the business side of the organization. In his first season, 2006-07, Shero led his team to its first playoff berth since 2001 and a 47-point improvement in the standings — the fourth-largest improvement from one season to the next in NHL history. Building on that success, the Penguins topped 100 points for the second straight season in 2007-08, winning their first division title since 1998 and advancing to the Stanley Cup Final, where they fell to Detroit. After a rocky start in 2008-09, the Penguins rallied when Bylsma was named head coach in February, finishing 18-3-4 to earn a playoff berth and then defeating Philadelphia, Washington, Carolina and Detroit en route to the Stanley Cup. Along the way, they twice overcame 2-0 deficits in games (against Washington and Detroit), won all four seriesclinching games on the road and won two Game Sevens on the road — including the 2-1 thriller at Detroit for the Cup. Ray’s father, Fred, had won two Stanley Cups as head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers in 1974 and 1975. The Sheros are one of the few father-son tandems to appear on the Cup. The late Fred Shero also was a coach and general manager with the New York Rangers. Ray built his hockey sense and managerial style during 14 seasons as an NHL assistant general manager — six with the Ottawa Senators and eight with the Nashville Predators. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University, twice serving as team captain, and was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1982. He spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. The native of St. Paul, Minn. is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.

JASON BOTTERILL Jason Botterill enters his second full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position on May 22, 2009 by general manager Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockeyrelated matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top-minor league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 34, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins; his responsibilities included salary cap management, professional and amateur scouting and overseeing prospects development. Botterill’s avant-garde approach and understanding of the salary cap has been a major asset for the Penguins. Before joining Pittsburgh, Botterill worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was a first-round draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in 1994 and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo. He also played 393 career games in the AHL and IHL, recording 127 goals and 257 points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four seasons at the University of Michigan, where he earned his MBA, and helped lead the Wolverines to the NCAA title in 1996. He also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in 1994, 1995 and 1996, helping his team win gold medals in all three tournaments. He resides in Pittsburgh along with his wife, Andrea.

In just one-plus seasons behind the bench, Dan Bylsma has already become one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history. After being promoted to Penguins head coach in February 2009, Bylsma, 40, directed the team to its third Stanley Cup in franchise history — a feat previously accomplished by legendary coaches “Badger” Bob Johnson and Scott Bowman. In the process Bylsma became the 14th rookie head coach, and just the fourth in the past 50 years, to capture the Stanley Cup. Of those 14, only Montreal’s Al MacNeil (1970-71) took over mid-season. Bylsma has the best regular-season winning percentage (.659) in team history, and is tied with Bowman for most postseason victories (23) and series victories (5). He also became the eighth-fastest head coach in NHL history to hit the 50-win mark (78 games). All-time under Bylsma, the Penguins boast a 65-31-11 regular-season record; 35-13-5 home record; 31-17-6 road mark; 40-3-3 when leading after two periods; 42-1-1 when scoring four or more goals; and 43-9-6 when scoring first. In 2009-10 the Grand Haven, Mich. native completed his first full NHL season behind the bench for Pittsburgh, leading the club to a 47-28-7 record for 101 points — breaking 100 points for the sixth time in franchise history and for the third time in the last four years — finishing only two points behind New Jersey for the Atlantic Division title. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons as a right winger with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-2004. He played 429 NHL regular-season games, recording 19 goals and 62 points, and also played in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final with Anaheim. He began his coaching career as an assistant with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks of the AHL in 2004-05 and made his NHL coaching debut as an assistant with the New York Islanders in 2005-06. Bylsma was an assistant coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for two seasons from 2006-08 and was named head coach at the start of the 2008-09 season. He went 35-16-1-2 in 54 games with WB/S before being promoted to Pittsburgh. He played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son and reside in the North Hills.

TONY GRANATO Tony Granato, 46, begins his second season on the Penguins’ coaching staff. Granato, among his many responsibilities, works with the Penguins’ forwards and penalty killing units. He oversaw the NHL’s ninth-ranked penalty killing group with an 84.1-percent success rate, and second best on the road at 85.3 percent. Prior to joining the Penguins, Granato spent six seasons behind the bench for the Colorado Avalanche and served two stints as Avalanche head coach from 2002-04 and 2008-09. Granato compiled a 215-104-17-16 record and led Colorado to a Northwest Division title in 2003. Granato played 13 seasons in the NHL with the NY Rangers, Los Angeles and San Jose. In 1997, he was the recipient of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for overcoming a near career-ending brain injury. In 773 career games, the feisty forward posted 248 goals, 492 points and 1,425 penalty minutes. He appeared in 79 career postseason games and helped lead Los Angeles to a Stanley Cup Final berth in 1993. Granato played four years at the University of Wisconsin and was inducted into the Badgers’ Hall of Fame in 2000. Granato also played for the U.S. National team in 1987-88 and represented his country in the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary. Tony and his wife, Linda, are the parents of four children and reside in the South Hills.
TODD REIRDEN Todd Reirden, 39, joined Pittsburgh’s coaching staff on July 31, 2010 after coaching with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins the previous two seasons. Reirden, an NHL defenseman for parts of five seasons, works closely with the team’s defensemen. Reirden, completed his first full season as WB/S head coach in 2009-10, leading a young and inexperienced team to an impressive 41-34-2-3 record, finishing third in the East Division, and a berth in the Calder Cup playoffs. Prior to joining the Penguins organization, Reirden spent one season as an assistant coach with the Bowling Green Falcons (CCHA) — his alma mater. He was a teammate of Bylsma’s during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons at Bowling Green. Selected by New Jersey in the 12th round (242nd overall) of the 1990 NHL Entry Draft, Reirden played professionally for 13 seasons, retiring after the 2006-07 campaign with Graz EC of the Austrian Hockey League. He appeared in 183 NHL games with Edmonton, St. Louis, Atlanta and Phoenix, recording 46 points (11+35) and 181 penalty minutes. Todd and his wife, Shelby, have one son.

GILLES MELOCHE Former NHL goaltender Gilles Meloche is in his fifth season as the Penguins’ full-time goaltending coach and 25th with the organization. Meloche has been instrumental in developing Marc-Andre Fleury into a Stanley Cup-winning netminder. Meloche served as a Penguins scout from 1989-2006 and also doubled as a goaltending coach/consultant during much of that time. He was also part of the staff when the Penguins won Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992. A native of Montreal, Quebec, Meloche spent 18 seasons as an NHL goaltender with Chicago, California, Cleveland, Minnesota and Pittsburgh. He played the final three seasons of his career in Pittsburgh following a 1985 trade. Meloche appeared in 788 NHL games during his career, posting a record of 270-351-131 with a 3.64 goals-against average. In 45 career playoff games, he posted a 21-19 record and a 3.48 goals-against average. Gilles and his wife, Sophie, reside in Pittsburgh. MIKE LANGE One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange enters his 35th season with the Penguins and will handle radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.
PHIL BOURQUE Two-time Stanley Cup champion Phil Bourque begins his seventh season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75+89) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88+111) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for FSN Pittsburgh’s coverage of Penguins hockey.
BOB GROVE After a 17-year career as the Penguins beat writer for the Washington Observer-Reporter, Bob Grove joined the team’s radio broadcasts in 1998 as a frequent studio host/co-host and is now in his sixth season as full-time host of the pre- and post-game broadcasts and intermissions on the Penguins Hockey Network. Grove wrote Pittsburgh Penguins: The Official History of the First 30 Years in 1997 and has contributed game notes to GOAL Magazine inserts or Icetime programs for every Pittsburgh home game since 1986. He was also a contributor to the second edition of Total Hockey and to The Game I’ll Never Forget. He is a senior writer covering hockey for the Pittsburgh Sports Report and also hosts “Heineken Hockey Hour” and “Bob Grove’s Hot Stove” on Penguins Radio at 105.9-HD 2.

COMMUNITY UPDATE PENGUINS PROVIDE SMILES AT CHARITY PRACTICE AND LUNCHEON The Penguins treated children from several different local charities to a front row seat at practice on March 7, as well as a meet-and-greet lunch with the team in the Lexus Club at CONSOL Energy Center. Thirty children and their parents from the Make-A-Wish Foundation, The Children’s Institute and The Children’s Home of Pittsburgh & Lemieux Family Center attended the event, which has been an annual team function for the last 25 years. During the Penguins’ practice and throughout the luncheon, the children and their families also received entertainment from Iceburgh, Chippo the Clown and a face painter. Dominic Ruperto and his mother Michelle enjoyed their close-up view of practice. Michelle said it meant a lot for Dominic and the other kids in attendance to be able to get so close to the players that they look up to, like team captain Sidney Crosby. The players spent time talking with the families, taking pictures and signing autographs. “It’s really special,” Michelle said. “It is so hard when you come to events, because with accessible seating, everything seems so far away. So it seems like it is so out of reach. But now it’s within their grasp. They can actually see them, touch them and say hello. It means a lot.”

THE FRENCH CONNECTION La connexion française — the French connection. That’s what four players on the Penguins roster have. And while they’ve all adjusted to American culture at different times and speeds, in the end, they all speak the same language in the Penguins locker room — both literally and figuratively. Maxime Talbot, Marc-Andre Fleury, Pascal Dupuis and Kris Letang are the team’s four French-Canadian players, all of them hailing from the Canadian province of Quebec. Fleury, 26, and Talbot, 27, are the two longest-tenured Penguins of that group. They have a history that goes way back, as they both played in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League — albeit with different teams — from 2000-04. The two were then teammates for Team Canada at the 2004 World Junior Championships before they both broke into the professional ranks for good with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League for the 2004-05 campaign. In retrospect, it couldn’t have worked out better for the two of them to learn on the fly together. They’re now road roommates when the Penguins travel. “I think it was nice to have Max, a guy that I knew from before,” Fleury said, who hails from Sorel. “It’s a little different with all of the English around, so it was nice to have him there.” Talbot agreed, saying “You learn things at the same time.” Dupuis, however, didn’t have quite as smooth a transition when he first came to the U.S. Dupuis, 31, broke into the league in 2000 after signing a free-agent contract with Minnesota. League, and adjusting to English was a tough transition for the Laval native. Ever heard of a dish called “Same Thing”? Dupuis sure has. It’s what he ordered at restaurants during his first year in the league, as he didn’t understand the dinner menus when the team went out and felt bad asking for translations. He chose instead to simply tell the server that he would have the same thing the person next to him had ordered. “Guys ordered sushi and stuff like that. My first time eating sushi I Pascal Dupuis, Marc-Andre Fleury and Max Talbot each thought it was called ‘Same Thing,’” helped Kris Letang adjust to the English language. Dupuis joked. Kris Letang, who is from Montreal, has been fortunate enough to have Dupuis, Fleury and Talbot already in the organization before his arrival. They have taken the 23-year-old defenseman under their wing to help him get acclimated, with Fleury even housing Letang for a pair of training camps while he looked for a place of his own. “I was not that comfortable at the beginning with the language,” Letang said. “I was just really quiet, scared to talk. But coming in, I think Pascal, ‘Flower,’ Max, helped me a lot to get into it. They talked to me, gave me some tips.” “You try to get the youngest French guy,” Talbot said. “I remember during camp, you take guys like Simon Despres out for supper. He speaks English, but you try to show him around. It’s not so much being French-Canadian. You try to do that with all of the rookies and young guys. You show them around. But especially sometimes when you speak French, it might be even more helpful.” The other three agreed with Dupuis that learning the language was the hardest part for them, as adjusting to American culture was an easy transition. Learning English in Quebec is much like taking a foreign language class such as Spanish or French in middle or high school here in the United States. “It’s probably like you guys when you learn French in school,” Fleury said of learning English. “It helps, but not that much.” However, they all learned as they went along, and all four Penguins feel comfortable speaking the English language now. They’ll still speak French in one-on-one conversations with each other, but they always use English in the locker room out of respect to their teammates. They all admit that it’s nice to have a group of French-Canadians in the Penguins organization. But in the end, it doesn’t matter much with the closeness of this Pittsburgh squad. “I think it’s nice, but I think in Pittsburgh we’ve always had teams that are very close to each other,” Fleury said. “It didn’t matter if you were French, Russian, English. I think everybody just gets along good and we have such a great chemistry, so that it makes it easier. You just come to the rink and it just feels good. It’s all your buddies there. So it’s a big help as a team.”

TAG-A-KID In the event a parent and child might be separated at a CONSOL Energy Center event, parents can register their child with the Tag-A-Kid program. VIDEO CAMERAS Use of video or audio recording equipment is strictly prohibited. CONSOL Energy Center reserves the right to confiscate any tape or film and remove the patron from the building.
WHEELCHAIRS A limited number of wheelchairs are available for transporting guests that are disabled to their seating location. Guests can be transported from the gates to their seats. If a wheelchair is needed for the duration of the event, guests must supply their own wheelchairs. Wheelchairs cannot be reserved in advance. On Saturday, October 16, sixteen youth hockey teams from the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) in the Pee Wee age group (age 11 - 12) participated in a shootout competition at CONSOL Energy Center. The event was videotaped to be shown in episodes at Penguins home games. The first round of competition featured heats between two teams striving to advance to the next round. Sixteen teams fielded five skaters shooting against the opposing team’s goalie. After each team competition, an individual shooter and goaltender squared off against the opposing team’s individual tandem for a one-on-one competition. Each winning team and pair of individuals advanced to the next round of eight teams/tandems. The format repeated as teams and individual pairs advanced through the quarterfinal heats to move on to the semi-finals. Robust competition marked the semi-final round for teams and individual tandems. The remaining two teams and individual tandems then had to “leave it all on the ice” in vying for the championship. Early in the second intermission of each Penguins home game the various heats in the competition will be featured. Enjoy each episode.

In its first few months, CONSOL Energy Center also hosted such acts as Lady Gaga and The Eagles; was home to the Pittsburgh College Hockey Showcase with Robert Morris; and featured multiple NCAA Division I basketball games, including the “City Game” between Pitt and Duquesne and the Big East/SEC Challenge. In its first season of operation, CONSOL Energy Center also will be home to the Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League — bringing indoor football back to the city for the first time in almost 20 years. A funding plan for the new arena project was completed in March, 2007, thanks to the combined efforts of Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, among others. The Sports & Exhibition Authority owns the building on behalf of the city and county, and the Penguins have the lease. The new arena is managed by SMG, with Jay Roberts serving as general manager.

CHETWYND, BRITISH COLUMBIA What was it like growing up in Chetwynd? It was a small town. I lived there from grades seven through 12 and we owned a marina for most of the time. So I grew up on the lake, with boats, quads, hunting, fishing, camping and all that stuff. Where did you and your friends hang out? At the lake during the summer. During the winter, though, there are not too many places to hang out. It’s pretty cold with a lot of snow. What was your favorite restaurant? There are not many restaurants, but I’d probably have to say Murray’s Pub. That would probably be the first place I’d go back to. What sports team did you root for? The [Edmonton] Eskimos [the Canadian Football League team], and the Edmonton Oilers growing up. Is there anyone famous from your hometown? Not really. There’s been one other NHL player, Dody Wood [San Jose]. Other than that, I don’t think anyone is famous at all from there. It’s just a small town, an industrial town with a lot of hard-working people. And it’s a lot of fun with a lot of outdoors stuff.

WHAT’S HAPPENING DEVELOPMENTAL PROGRAMS LEARN TO PLAY HOCKEY With the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and Dick’s Sporting Goods over the last three years the Penguins have provided over 2,200 sets of equipment free to local youth ages 4 to 7. This year, four girls-only programs will operate along side of our standard co-ed Little Penguins program. OPEN PRACTICE The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation presented the 2010 Pittsburgh Penguins Open Hockey Practice on Thursday, December 9, 2010 at the brand new CONSOL Energy Center. The event offered a rare opportunity for over 10,000 school students in grades one through eight from across Allegheny County to see the Pittsburgh Penguins at work. Students were entertained leading up to the start of practice with informational videos about behind-thescenes aspects of the team/facility, as well as educational elements related to the game (geography, math, etc.) each student received an activity book as a takeaway.
WELLNESS TRAINING K.A.M.P. AT UPMC SOUTHSIDE Presented by UPMC Sports Medicine and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. Young hockey players were divided into groups and performed a rotation of 10-minute drills, while UPMC Sports Medicine professionals provided assessments. While the athletes trained, their parents received lectures on nutrition, concussions and sports injuries in general. Over 150 athletes and parents attended the event.

CONCUSSION PROGRAM The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, in conjunction with UPMC Sports Medicine, are prepared to announce a comprehensive program for baseline testing and concussion education for all youth sports beginning at the earliest possible ages.
PENGUINS FOUNDATION CHARITY ASSIST RAFFLE The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Penguins Foundation are pleased to host the Penguins Foundation Charity ASSIST Raffle, raising money for a variety of local charities in the western Pennsylvania area. NEW SPORTS INITIATIVES — COMING IN 2011 OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES In its efforts to fight the sedentary tendencies of America’s youth, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation is excited to offer outdoor programs to promote fun and organized physical activity. The program, to be revealed in January, is designed to take advantage of the growing popularity of hockey in the tri-state area by affording young players access to existing facilities and newly constructed outdoor multi-use athletic facilities. These programs provide safe areas to play games under the supervision of established organizations. SCHOOL PROGRAMS • FIRST STRIDE In the ultimate Field Trip, participating schools will be provided with a Penguins-themed hockey experience: Students will be transported to and from a local ice arena, outfitted in full hockey equipment and learn fundamental hockey skills. The program will conclude with each child scoring their first goal! • GYM CLASS FOR A DAY This program is designed for 4th and 5th grade physical education classes and will provide basic skills and game instruction. Gym Class for a Day will transform your school gymnasium or parking lot into a dek/ball hockey rink. The Penguins will provide equipment for an ongoing P.E. Hockey Program. Penguins staff will be on hand to assist P.E. teachers in demonstrating and administering basic hockey skills and games. Each student will be provided a hockey ball and Penguins t-shirt to take home and continue practicing their skills.

THE PENGUINS GAME VAULT APRIL 9, 1993 • PENGUINS 10, NY RANGERS 4 MADISON SQUARE GARDEN When the puck was dropped between Pittsburgh and the New York Rangers at 7:43 p.m. on April 9, 1993, 60 minutes was all that stood between the Penguins and immortality. With a victory over their Patrick Division rival, the Penguins would establish a National Hockey League record with their 16th consecutive victory. New York made things interesting by emerging from the first period tied at 2-2, and staying within a 5-3 deficit of Pittsburgh after two periods, but a five-goal outburst by the Penguins in the final frame carried them to a 10-4 victory in Mario Lemieux
the Big Apple. As usual that season, Mario Lemieux was the catalyst for
the Penguins, scoring five goals as he and his high-scoring teammates tortured New York goaltenders Corey Hirsch and Mike Richter. Joey Mullen added a hat trick for the Penguins, as even goaltender Tom Barrasso factored heavily into the offense on this historic evening with three assists. Both teams exchange a pair of goals in the first period with Mullen and Larry Murphy tallying for the Penguins, and Adam Graves and John McIntyre scoring for the Rangers. With the Rangers scrapping and clawing in effort to pull off the upset, Lemieux took over in the second period. By the 16:05 mark of the period he notched his fourth hat trick of the season and the 31st of his career by scoring once each at even strength, on the power play and shorthanded to give the Penguins a 5-3 lead at the second intermission. Unfortunately for New York, Lemieux wasn’t done. He added goals 4:14 and 11:15 into the third period to cap one of the greatest individual performances in the history of the fabled Garden. His five-goal night was the second of three five-goal regular-season games Lemieux would accumulate during his Hall of Fame career. Following his fifth goal, Lemieux received a standing ovation from the New York crowd. Mullen added a pair of third-period goals himself to complete his fourth and final hat trick in a Pittsburgh sweater, while Jaromir Jagr notched his 34th goal of the season as the Penguins scored five times in a span of 11:15 to put the Rangers away for good. New York closed out the scoring at 18:40 of the final frame when a 20-year-old rookie by the name of Alexei Kovalev — sound familiar? — scored his 20th goal of the season to cap a 10-4 Pittsburgh victory. The Penguins defeated the Rangers again, 4-2, one night later to improve their streak to 17 games before a 6-6 tie in the regular-season finale against the New Jersey Devils ended their run. Seventeen years later the Penguins’ 17-game winning streak still stands as the longest in NHL history. 147
POWER PLAY POTENTIAL It was easy to overlook on the score sheet — “16:11, 3rd period, C. Kunitz (20), from J. Neal and T. Kennedy.” But not if you noticed the “PP” designation between the time of the goal and Chris Kunitz’ name. For the Penguins’ struggling power-play units that might have meant a great deal more than the mere difference between a 4-1 win over the Oilers and a 5-1 triumph last Sunday at the CONSOL Energy Center. “I know in a 4-1 game the fifth goal might not be a big one,” head coach Dan Bylsma acknowledged. “But to get the Paul Martin has faith in the power-play power-play goal felt like we got something unit but knows they still have work to do. we needed to get for our power-play guys. “We’re still trying to figure out the adjustments of where guys are going to be. I like a lot of what we’ve seen but we need to start getting some results. Hopefully that goal, the Chris Kunitz goal from James Neal, a [down-] low play against a penalty-kill that was pressuring, that was a good play and hopefully something we can build on and see some success in that area.” That was the mindset the Penguins declared at the Canadian border prior to Tuesday night’s game at Ottawa. Although they came home with another 5-1 triumph freshly etched into the ledger, the Penguins went 0-for-5 on the power play against the Senators. And so the search for a breakout game, a way to turn the spark provided by Tyler Kennedy, Neal and Kunitz against Edmonton into a power-play flame will continue this afternoon against the New York Rangers. Kunitz’ otherwise-meaningless tally salvaged a 1-for-6 effort with the man advantage against Edmonton, and was the Penguins’ first power-play goal in six games (they had been 0-for-22 in that span). That left the power play 2-for-22 in the eight games since the acquisition of Alexei Kovalev and 45-for-272 on the season (16.5 percent, No. 21 overall) pre-Ottawa. No wonder Kunitz’ late goal against Edmonton seemed so potentially meaningful. “Confidence is a huge thing in hockey,” Kunitz said. “You bang a couple in, if they’re rebounds, tip-ins, whatever, it gives you confidence going out there and you have that warm, fuzzy feeling almost. continued on page 151

“I know guys have been trying real hard. We’ve been putting pucks to areas. We just haven’t got the right bounces. We have guys pegged in certain spots and areas. It’s getting the puck to go there and getting passes to be crisp and getting the puck to the net, and still you need that lucky little extra bounce to get some goals in this league.” The Penguins know they’ve been able to minimize the potential damage inflicted by their seemingly season-long struggles to score power-play goals by killing penalties at a league-leading pace (they were 243-for-279, 87.1 percent as of Tuesday). But they’re also aware the rest of the NHL is also determined to kill as many penalties as possible. “Everyone wants to block shots,” Kunitz said. “Everyone has a good PK and they know what they’re doing. You’re not just going out there freewheeling. Everybody knows they have specific borders and plays to do. It’s something we have to work on and get better at, doing those things.” The Penguins remain determined to figure things out, man-advantage wise, in time for the playoffs. Should that occur, an otherwise easy-to-forget goal against Edmonton could yet loom large for the man-advantage units, “just to get it out of the way,” defenseman Paul Martin said. “I think we’ve been doing a lot of good things; the power plays haven’t been able to score,” Martin continued. “We still need to work on it quite a bit. “We’re not getting enough shots. We’re mixing guys in and out and sometimes it’s tough to find the chemistry there. But there are no excuses, we need to find a way to get it done and that goal helped us just relax a little bit. Maybe that’s what it will take to continue to have some success. “Just find a way to get it done whoever you’re on the ice with. Special teams, in today’s game, are huge. To kill the way we do is huge; you can gain a lot of momentum that way. It’s the same with the power play. If you can’t score it’s tough to win games. Most teams are getting a goal or two a game on the power play. If you’re not it’s tough to make up for it five-on-five.”

PENS PROFILE MATT NISKANEN
Sidney Crosby has been in exactly five fights during his six NHL seasons. The most recent occurred this past Nov. 3. Crosby’s opponent was defenseman Matt Niskanen of the Dallas Stars. Yes, the same Matt Niskanen that Dallas traded to Pittsburgh on Feb. 21. “He didn’t even mention it, actually,” Niskanen said of reacquainting himself with Crosby upon arriving in Pittsburgh. “He didn’t mention it to me. I didn’t mention it to him. I was waiting for him to say something. Nobody really holds a grudge or anything. That’s not what that fight was about. “It’s a non-issue. Something we can laugh about, maybe.” Niskanen hasn’t dropped the mitts since arriving in Pittsburgh. But he has played solid defense, contributed offensively and jump-started a career than seemed to be languishing in Dallas. Niskanen had a goal and an assist in his first eight games as a member of the Penguins, collecting both in a 3-2 overtime loss at Toronto on March 2. He had six assists in 45 games with Dallas. Niskanen, a first-round pick (28th overall) in 2005, arrived in Dallas for the 2007-08 season and made immediate impact. He got seven goals and 19 assists in 78 games, then three assists in 16 playoff games as Dallas advanced to the Western Conference Final before losing to eventual Stanley Cup champ Detroit. Niskanen had six goals and 29 assists in 80 games the following campaign. But after that, Niskanen’s stock seemed to dip. He was averaging 15:44 of ice time per © Getty Images

Niskanen has been solid defensively since coming to Pittsburgh.
“It’s tough leaving the guys,” said Niskanen, who never played less than 17:42 during his first eight games with the Penguins. “You develop great friendships, and it was my first trade. Dallas was my first organization. But the hockey opportunity is what I needed. It’s been a breath of fresh air. I’m really excited about it. You couldn’t ask to be with a better organization than Pittsburgh. Great team, great people. “My first game, I ran on pure emotion. But I’ve been trying to learn as much as I can about how we want to play here, the details of our game. I’m feeling more and more confident as I go.” Niskanen seems a great fit for the Penguins’ fast-paced style. The Virginia, Minn., native had 13 shots in his first eight games with Pittsburgh (compared to 51 in 45 games with Dallas). “Some of that is playing the left side,” Niskanen said. “It seems to help me a little bit. Our forwards do a good job of working their defense down low, their forwards have to collapse, and we have a lot of room at the blue line. I’m trying to be involved as much as I can offensively. Supplement the attack.” The 6-foot, 200-pound University of Minnesota-Duluth product has also been competent in transition. “There’s a lot of good speed on this team, so we want to utilize that as much as we can and get the puck going north,” Niskanen said. “Play more in the offensive zone. That’s where we can play to our strengths. We want to get the puck as quick as we can and get it headed up ice.” 172
Defensively, Niskanen said, “Just the details are different. How they want to play, how they go back for pucks, how we want to get it moving as quick as we can. Going back for pucks — the passes are a little bit shorter. They do it a little bit different. In Dallas, it was more traditional, I guess. But this way works, and I’m learning the finer details of it and getting better at it.” Assistant coach Todd Reirden works with the defenseman. He was pleased with Niskanen’s salad days as a Penguin. “His mobility is very good,” Reirden said. “He does a good job of getting shots through from the blue line. “We’ve spent a lot of time before practice and after practice and during practices working on details of the game. He’s put the time and effort in, learning how we want to do things. We’re going to give him the tools to have success. Where he takes that from there is up to him.” Hopefully, Crosby will return to the lineup soon. The better to provide Niskanen with memories that supersede their scrap, which most observers felt Crosby won. When asked in the immediate aftermath if the fight was something he’d tell his grandkids about, Niskanen replied, “That I got beat up by Sidney Crosby? I suppose not too many guys are in that club.”
Niskanen continues to work at learning Pittsburgh’s system.
