WIN A SUBARU OUTBACK FROM THE PENGUINS AND THE POWER OF BOWSER 6
SEE PAGE 64 FOR MORE DETAILS
AROUND THE NHL The Anaheim Ducks are in the thick of the battle for the Western Conference’s eighth and final playoff berth, and much of it is due to the play of goaltender Ray Emery and forward Corey Perry. Emery, who has been playing in relief of injured goaltender Jonas Hiller, earned the NHL’s Second Star honors for the week ending March 19 by posting a 2-0 record, a 0.99 goals-against average and a .968 save percentage in his first two NHL starts in over a year, as Emery underwent season-ending hip surgery in March 2010. Ray Emery Perry became the first player in Ducks history to score overtime goals in consecutive games, giving Anaheim a 2-1 win over Los Angeles on March 19 before tallying in the extra session in the Ducks’ game against Calgary on March 20 to give Anaheim a 5-4 win. As of March 21, Perry had 39 goals and his nine game winners were second (tied) in the league.

PAVELSKI POWERS SHARKS
Joe Pavelski
As of March 21, the San Jose Sharks held down first place in the Pacific Division and were just two points behind Detroit for second place in the Western Conference. A large part of that is due to the play of center Joe Pavelski. Pavelski was named the NHL’s First Star for the week ending March 19 as he led the league in scoring with 11 points (3G-8A) and helped the Sharks win three of four games during that stretch. He has already smashed his previous career-high of 34 assists with his 41 helpers this season, while his 57 total points put him two shy of his career-high of 59 set in 2008-09.
FLYERS AND CANUCKS CLINCH As if the battle for playoff positioning isn’t already tough enough, two of the National Hockey League’s 16 postseason berths have been clinched — one in each conference. The Philadelphia Flyers have assured themselves a chance to make a second-consecutive trip to the Stanley Cup Final with their shootout win over the Dallas Stars on March 19 that gave them 96 points. The Vancouver Canucks became the first team to clinch a berth in the playoffs with their 4-2 win over Colorado on March 16, and they have since cemented the Northwest Division title with their 103 points. 8

RON BURKLE Ron Burkle has now added a new arena — Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center — to his tremendous list of accomplishments in the business world. Burkle, widely recognized as one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 12th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have developed one of the outstanding ownership groups in all of professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his role in negotiations for the new arena deal. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for three-plus seasons and established new standards for television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits while winning acclaim as the No. 1 team in professional sports in Fan Relations. A consistent post-season threat on the ice, the Penguins reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009 and won the Cup in 2009. Young stars such as Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Jordan Staal and others have been signed to long-term contracts, ensuring that the team’s core will remain intact. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League and the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy. He has received numerous awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year and the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year award.

MARIO LEMIEUX Mario Lemieux always will be remembered for the magic he created on the ice, but one of the crowning achievements of his remarkable career came this season in his role as a businessman — the opening of CONSOL Energy Center, home of the Penguins and Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue. The new arena puts the exclamation point on Lemieux’s lengthy quest to ensure the Penguins’ long-term future in Pittsburgh and provides his adopted hometown with a spectacular state-of-the-art center for professional and collegiate sports, concerts, family shows and other events. “There were so many people who contributed to this project, including local and state political leaders, local business leaders, NHL officials and, of course, our fans,” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse, “but I think it’s safe to say that none of this happens without Mario Lemieux.” Even before the reality of CONSOL Energy Center, Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle had turned the Penguins into a premier NHL franchise, winning praise for off-ice business accomplishments in addition to creating a positive, player-friendly atmosphere on the hockey side. The Penguins have sold out a team-record 186 straight games, sold out every suite for three straight seasons and established records for local television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits. Over the summer, the Penguins were named the No. 1 team in professional sports in Fan Relations by ESPN The Magazine. Oh, and they won the Stanley Cup in 2009 — the third Cup of Lemieux’s career but his first as an owner. Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVPs trophies and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP, in addition to the two Cups. An immaculately gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $8 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario, his wife Nathalie and their four children live in Sewickley.

DAVID MOREHOUSE Pittsburgh native David Morehouse was named CEO of the Penguins in September and leads the team into an exciting new era at CONSOL Energy Center. Morehouse had served as team president since 2007, overseeing ticket sales, marketing, corporate sales, communications and brand development, as well as representing the team in corporate relations and governmental affairs. Under his leadership the Penguins have become one of the top organizations in professional sports — ranked No. 1 in Fan Relations and No. 5 overall as a franchise among 122 pro teams in North America by ESPN The Magazine. As team president, Morehouse implemented a brand strategy that featured a new commitment to marketing, fan interaction and community outreach, as well as a targeted focus on the team’s young fan demographic. Under his leadership, the Penguins have sold out every game for three straight seasons — the sellout streak was at 166 games entering 2010-11— while leading all U.S.-based NHL teams in local TV ratings last season and setting new standards for website traffic and social media. RAY SHERO Ray Shero, 48, is at the vanguard of the NHL’s new breed of general managers — steeped in family hockey tradition but on the cutting-edge of new technology and modernization in hockey operations, player relations and team management. His fresh ideas and calm but firm management style helped transform the Penguins from a team that did not qualify for the playoffs in 2005-06 to one that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2007-08 and won the Cup in 2008-09. During that time, he has moved boldly to ensure a strong future for the Penguins, signing six key members of the team’s core — Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Jordan Staal, Brooks Orpik and Kris Letang — to long-term contracts. Shero built on the team’s already strong foundation by adding key pieces in the 2010 offseason to set the Penguins up for long-term success. With shrewd maneuvering and an aggressive approach during the first day of free agency, he solidified the team’s blue line with the long-term signings of top-rated defensemen Paul Martin and Zbynek Michalek. Shero was named GM on May 25, 2006 and one of his first acts was to declare a goal of building a team that could compete for championships on a yearly basis. He revamped the team’s hockey operations staff and structure, upgraded professional and amateur scouting, added a team operations director and opened new lines of communication with the business side of the organization. In his first season, 2006-07, Shero led his team to its first playoff berth since 2001 and a 47-point improvement in the standings — the fourth-largest improvement from one season to the next in NHL history. Building on that success, the Penguins topped 100 points for the second straight season in 2007-08, winning their first division title since 1998 and advancing to the Stanley Cup Final, where they fell to Detroit. After a rocky start in 2008-09, the Penguins rallied when Bylsma was named head coach in February, finishing 18-3-4 to earn a playoff berth and then defeating Philadelphia, Washington, Carolina and Detroit en route to the Stanley Cup. Along the way, they twice overcame 2-0 deficits in games (against Washington and Detroit), won all four seriesclinching games on the road and won two Game Sevens on the road — including the 2-1 thriller at Detroit for the Cup. Ray’s father, Fred, had won two Stanley Cups as head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers in 1974 and 1975. The Sheros are one of the few father-son tandems to appear on the Cup. The late Fred Shero also was a coach and general manager with the New York Rangers. Ray built his hockey sense and managerial style during 14 seasons as an NHL assistant general manager — six with the Ottawa Senators and eight with the Nashville Predators. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University, twice serving as team captain, and was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1982. He spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. The native of St. Paul, Minn. is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.

JASON BOTTERILL Jason Botterill enters his second full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position on May 22, 2009 by general manager Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockeyrelated matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top-minor league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 34, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins; his responsibilities included salary cap management, professional and amateur scouting and overseeing prospects development. Botterill’s avant-garde approach and understanding of the salary cap has been a major asset for the Penguins. Before joining Pittsburgh, Botterill worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was a first-round draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in 1994 and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo. He also played 393 career games in the AHL and IHL, recording 127 goals and 257 points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four seasons at the University of Michigan, where he earned his MBA, and helped lead the Wolverines to the NCAA title in 1996. He also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in 1994, 1995 and 1996, helping his team win gold medals in all three tournaments. He resides in Pittsburgh along with his wife, Andrea.

In just one-plus seasons behind the bench, Dan Bylsma has already become one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history. After being promoted to Penguins head coach in February 2009, Bylsma, 40, directed the team to its third Stanley Cup in franchise history — a feat previously accomplished by legendary coaches “Badger” Bob Johnson and Scott Bowman. In the process Bylsma became the 14th rookie head coach, and just the fourth in the past 50 years, to capture the Stanley Cup. Of those 14, only Montreal’s Al MacNeil (1970-71) took over mid-season. Bylsma has the best regular-season winning percentage (.659) in team history, and is tied with Bowman for most postseason victories (23) and series victories (5). He also became the eighth-fastest head coach in NHL history to hit the 50-win mark (78 games). All-time under Bylsma, the Penguins boast a 65-31-11 regular-season record; 35-13-5 home record; 31-17-6 road mark; 40-3-3 when leading after two periods; 42-1-1 when scoring four or more goals; and 43-9-6 when scoring first. In 2009-10 the Grand Haven, Mich. native completed his first full NHL season behind the bench for Pittsburgh, leading the club to a 47-28-7 record for 101 points — breaking 100 points for the sixth time in franchise history and for the third time in the last four years — finishing only two points behind New Jersey for the Atlantic Division title. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons as a right winger with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-2004. He played 429 NHL regular-season games, recording 19 goals and 62 points, and also played in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final with Anaheim. He began his coaching career as an assistant with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks of the AHL in 2004-05 and made his NHL coaching debut as an assistant with the New York Islanders in 2005-06. Bylsma was an assistant coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for two seasons from 2006-08 and was named head coach at the start of the 2008-09 season. He went 35-16-1-2 in 54 games with WB/S before being promoted to Pittsburgh. He played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son and reside in the North Hills.

Reirden, completed his first full season as WB/S head coach in 2009-10, leading a young and inexperienced team to an impressive 41-34-2-3 record, finishing third in the East Division, and a berth in the Calder Cup playoffs. MIKE LANGE One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange enters his 35th season with the Penguins and will handle radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.
PHIL BOURQUE Two-time Stanley Cup champion Phil Bourque begins his seventh season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75+89) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88+111) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for FSN Pittsburgh’s coverage of Penguins hockey.
BOB GROVE After a 17-year career as the Penguins beat writer for the Washington Observer-Reporter, Bob Grove joined the team’s radio broadcasts in 1998 as a frequent studio host/co-host and is now in his sixth season as full-time host of the pre- and post-game broadcasts and intermissions on the Penguins Hockey Network. Grove wrote Pittsburgh Penguins: The Official History of the First 30 Years in 1997 and has contributed game notes to GOAL Magazine inserts or Icetime programs for every Pittsburgh home game since 1986. He was also a contributor to the second edition of Total Hockey and to The Game I’ll Never Forget. He is a senior writer covering hockey for the Pittsburgh Sports Report and also hosts “Heineken Hockey Hour” and “Bob Grove’s Hot Stove” on Penguins Radio at 105.9-HD 2.

LOCKER ROOM MADNESS IN MARCH The madness of March being what it annually is, predictability usually takes a backseat to combustibility as far as filling out a bracket or two is concerned. That goes for professional athletes and coaches as well as flag-flying alumni. Take Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma, who is as frustrated as he is fascinated with this year’s NCAA Tournament. “My Final Four is so bad,” Bylsma lamented. He made that assessment before the tournament had even started. And as it turns out Bylsma was more prophetic than he was correct. “For no other reason than I’d like to see it happen I had Pitt going to the Final Four,” Bylsma said. That didn’t quite work out as planned, for Bylsma or the Panthers. Regarding the rest of Bylsma’s Final Four, “I’m embarrassed,” he maintained, “because they’re all No. 1 [seeds] but one. I have North Carolina, Kansas, Pitt and Duke.” Bylsma usually prefers to select a “sleeper” to get to the Final Four each year. His alma mater, Bowling Green, wasn’t an option this season. So be it. As the tournament enters the Sweet 16 phase and goes about the process of trimming the field down to the Final Four this weekend, the Penguins will be keeping an eye on the scoreboard — and not just because of their interest in what will happen when Washington travels to Montreal on Saturday, or when Boston visits Philadelphia on Sunday. There’s a tournament pool in the locker room, as there is in seemingly every other place of business or social gathering spot in America, and someone’s going to win it. Hockey being the global game that it is, the possibility exists that the eventual winner really won’t know if a basketball is blown up or stuffed. “I’ve had Finnish guys ask in the past, who’s Du-ke?” said winger Mike Rupp, who, like Bylsma, grew up in the United States and grew up with NCAA hoops. “I’m like, Duke? Yeah, you might want to pick them.” Rupp, a Cleveland native, picked Pitt, Kansas, UConn and Ohio State in his Final Four this time, with Ohio State and Kansas meeting in the final. continued on page 61

“I have Pitt, that means something to me, and I have Ohio State, and that means something to me,” Rupp said. His heart might have gotten in the way this time, but the man has a track record. Rupp reported having won a locker room NCAA tournament pool as well as a Stanley Cup over the course of his career, and finishing third with another one of his brackets. “Obviously, the key is to have the Final Four,” he said. Another critical element is luck. Just as it is in the office pool or in the one they run at the local Italian Club. “The guy that knows the least is probably going to win,” Rupp said. “Because I put so much thought into it this year I probably won’t have a chance.” Defenseman Ben Lovejoy is a native of Canaan, New Hampshire and played college hockey at Boston College and Dartmouth. But Lovejoy wasn’t certain his NCAA experience on ice would translate into hardwood expertise. “My Big Green haven’t made it since, I think, 1956, which is the second-longest NCAA Tournament drought, so I don’t know if I’m the guy to speak to it,” Lovejoy said. “I’m picking Duke with Kyrie Irving coming back [from a December injury]. I remember how special he was at the beginning of the year. “I don’t know a whole lot about it but I watch a decent amount of SportsCenter.” French-Canadian goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury isn’t much of a basketball fan (“not really”) and never really showed much of an aptitude as a basketball player (“I suck”), but was nonetheless able to make his picks based on what he was able to glean from his laptop. “I have Ohio State winning,” Fleury said. “I just looked on-line for some hints, because I have no clue.” Then there’s Alex Kovalev, who also grew up in a country that takes its basketball pretty seriously (Russia). “I watch once in a while but I’m not really crazy about it,” he said. “I love playing sports but I’m not really a big fan of watching them.” That being the case, Kovalev apparently went for name recognition when filling out his bracket. “I have Duke and Notre Dame in the final, I think,” Kovalev said. Better those two than Vladivostok A&M.
“I HAVE PITT, THAT MEANS SOMETHING TO ME, AND I HAVE OHIO STATE, AND THAT MEANS SOMETHING TO ME” ~ Mike Rupp Mike Prisuta is the sports director for WDVE-FM and the sports anchor for “Jim, Randy & the DVE Morning Show.”

TONIGHT’S COMPETITORS ARE:
SEMI-FINALS HEAT TWO: NORTH PITTSBURGH WILDCATS PEE WEE 4 VS. NORTH PITTSBURGH WILDCATS A MAJOR GOLD The one-on-one competition features Olivia Villani/ Rebecca Hiss from Pittsburgh Vipers Girls U14 against Jimmy Gojkovich/ Kenny Lavelle from Allegheny Badgers Pee Wee 3. You can also view this and previously shown competitions at pittsburghpenguins.com.
On Saturday, October 16, sixteen youth hockey teams from the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) in the Pee Wee age group (age 11 - 12) participated in a shootout competition at CONSOL Energy Center. The event was videotaped to be shown in episodes at Penguins home games. The first round of competition featured heats between two teams striving to advance to the next round. Sixteen teams fielded five skaters shooting against the opposing team’s goalie. After each team competition, an individual shooter and goaltender squared off against the opposing team’s individual tandem for a one-on-one competition. Each winning team and pair of individuals advanced to the next round of eight teams/tandems. The format repeated as teams and individual pairs advanced through the quarterfinal heats to move on to the semi-finals. Robust competition marked the semi-final round for teams and individual tandems. The remaining two teams and individual tandems then had to “leave it all on the ice” in vying for the championship. Early in the second intermission of each Penguins home game the various heats in the competition will be featured. Enjoy each episode.

I feel
.
Ask a grieving child how they’re feeling and you may get a lot of answers. Or none at all. For many, finding the words to express their feelings can be difficult. But while finding the right words may not be easy, finding the right place to turn to for help can be. At the Caring Place, we’re here when grieving children need someone to listen, to talk, or to just sit and be. For more information about one of our peer support groups or to volunteer, call us today.

OUR NEW HOME CONSOL Energy Center opened in August, 2010 as Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue — home of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins as well as other professional and collegiate sports, concerts, children’s shows, skating shows and more. It replaced the old Civic Arena/Mellon Arena, which had operated since 1961 and was home of the Penguins from their inception in 1967. It was the oldest arena in the National Hockey League. “CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins,” said David Morehouse, CEO of the hockey team. “With open concourses, comfortable seating, cutting-edge technology, a state-of-the-art scoreboard and sound system, and an extensive array of food and beverage options, it is

In its first few months, CONSOL Energy Center also hosted such acts as Lady Gaga and The Eagles; was home to the Pittsburgh College Hockey Showcase with Robert Morris; and featured multiple NCAA Division I basketball games, including the “City Game” between Pitt and Duquesne and the Big East/SEC Challenge. In its first season of operation, CONSOL Energy Center also will be home to the Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League — bringing indoor football back to the city for the first time in almost 20 years. A funding plan for the new arena project was completed in March, 2007, thanks to the combined efforts of Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, among others. The Sports & Exhibition Authority owns the building on behalf of the city and county, and the Penguins have the lease. The new arena is managed by SMG, with Jay Roberts serving as general manager.
The CONSOL Energy Center has already hosted acts such as Paul McCartney, The Eagles, and Lady Gaga. It was home to the Pittsburgh College Hockey Showcase with Robert Morris and has featured multiple NCAA Division I basketball games.

WHAT’S HAPPENING DEVELOPMENTAL PROGRAMS LEARN TO PLAY HOCKEY With the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and Dick’s Sporting Goods over the last three years the Penguins have provided over 2,200 sets of equipment free to local youth ages 4 to 7. This year, four girls-only programs will operate along side of our standard co-ed Little Penguins program. OPEN PRACTICE The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation presented the 2010 Pittsburgh Penguins Open Hockey Practice on Thursday, December 9, 2010 at the brand new CONSOL Energy Center. The event offered a rare opportunity for over 10,000 school students in grades one through eight from across Allegheny County to see the Pittsburgh Penguins at work. Students were entertained leading up to the start of practice with informational videos about behind-thescenes aspects of the team/facility, as well as educational elements related to the game (geography, math, etc.) each student received an activity book as a takeaway.
WELLNESS TRAINING K.A.M.P. AT UPMC SOUTHSIDE Presented by UPMC Sports Medicine and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. Young hockey players were divided into groups and performed a rotation of 10-minute drills, while UPMC Sports Medicine professionals provided assessments. While the athletes trained, their parents received lectures on nutrition, concussions and sports injuries in general. Over 150 athletes and parents attended the event.

NEW SPORTS INITIATIVES — COMING IN 2011 OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES In its efforts to fight the sedentary tendencies of America’s youth, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation is excited to offer outdoor programs to promote fun and organized physical activity. The program, to be revealed in January, is designed to take advantage of the growing popularity of hockey in the tri-state area by affording young players access to existing facilities and newly constructed outdoor multi-use athletic facilities. These programs provide safe areas to play games under the supervision of established organizations. SCHOOL PROGRAMS • FIRST STRIDE In the ultimate Field Trip, participating schools will be provided with a Penguins-themed hockey experience: Students will be transported to and from a local ice arena, outfitted in full hockey equipment and learn fundamental hockey skills. The program will conclude with each child scoring their first goal! • GYM CLASS FOR A DAY This program is designed for 4th and 5th grade physical education classes and will provide basic skills and game instruction. Gym Class for a Day will transform your school gymnasium or parking lot into a dek/ball hockey rink. The Penguins will provide equipment for an ongoing P.E. Hockey Program. Penguins staff will be on hand to assist P.E. teachers in demonstrating and administering basic hockey skills and games. Each student will be provided a hockey ball and Penguins t-shirt to take home and continue practicing their skills.

HOSTS THRILLING PENGUINS CUP FINALE Upper St. Clair, Bishop Canevin and Mars were all victorious in the 2011 84 Lumber Penguins Cup finals, giving them the chance to hoist the Penguins Cup for their respective classes at CONSOL Energy Center. Each game had its own storyline, from a shutout to an overtime thriller. All players were able to experience the game-day atmosphere the Pittsburgh Penguins experience at CONSOL Energy Center while battling for their chance to hoist the coveted cup.
Upper St. Clair
The Mars Planets were the first to hoist the Penguins Cup after they defeated Hampton 5-0. It was not until 42.8 left in the first period that Mars’ Elliot Tisdale got the Planets on the board with a slap shot from the bottom of the circle. Mars capitalized again in the second period when a Hampton turnover resulted in a Nick Blaney backhand into the back of the net. Mars’ Austin Heakins finished the game with two goals and an assist while Blaney had two goals. Mars’ defense and their senior goaltender,
Bishop Canevin
Tyler Stepke, preserved the shutout late in the third as Hampton tried to fight back. For the past eight years Bishop Canevin has been eliminated in the semifinals, unable to reach the Penguins Cup final. This year Bishop Canevin roared into the finals and defeated Peters Township 5-2. Matt Walsh, a junior, led the Bishop Canevin Crusaders with a goal and two assists. Down 2-0 in the second period, Peters Township started battling back as Davan Groom cut the lead to one. Bishop Canevin did not let up, and continued to put pressure
Mars
on the Peters Township goaltender Woody Shell. Unfortunately for Canevin star player Randy Unger will likely miss the State Championship due to a broken shoulder he suffered in the game. Despite being heavily outshot most of the game, Canon McMillan seemed to have the upper hand on the game, leading 3-2 late. It took overtime to decide the Class AAA Penguins Cup final as Upper St. Clair and the Canon McMillan Big Macs made it a late night at CONSOL Energy Center. With 1:47 remaining in regulation and down 3-2, USC’s Justin Selep pushed the game into overtime with a power-play goal. USC’s Michael Sweeney found the net with 6:50 remaining in overtime, winning the first championship for USC in 20 years. 145
THE PENGUINS GAME VAULT APRIL 5, 1991 • PENGUINS 5, DEVILS 4 CIVIC ARENA Winning the Stanley Cup is arguably the toughest journey to a championship in professional sports. A team must win four best-of-seven series — 16 games total — over the course of two short months. Along the way, adversity strikes even the best of teams. Those squads that successfully deal with and fend off these nuisances along the way are the ones who lift the precious 35-pound silver chalice at the end of the road. In 1991, the Pittsburgh Penguins successfully navigated themselves down the road to immortality as they defeated New Jersey, Washington, Boston and Minnesota en route the franchise’s first-ever Stanley Jaromir Jagr Cup championship. Twenty years later, it’s almost impossible to envision any scenario besides Mario Lemieux lifting the Cup over his head on May 25 at the Met Center in Minnesota, but in reality, there were several delicate moments where winning it all looked impossible. The first adversity Pittsburgh faced came early in its run. Armed with home-ice advantage over the Devils thanks to the team’s first-ever Patrick Division championship, the Penguins found themselves staring at a potential 0-2 hole heading into Game Two of the opening round. Fortunately for Pittsburgh, 19-year-old rookie sensation Jaromir Jagr stepped to the plate and scored the first overtime game-winning goal of his career — which was also his first-ever postseason tally — by scoring a brilliant goal 8:52 into the first overtime to give the Penguins a much-needed 5-4 victory that evened the series at 1-1. Jagr’s breathtaking tally began at the blue line along the near boards where he took a pass from Phil Bourque with one hand on his stick. As New Jersey’s John MacLean dug his stick into his back, Jagr found a way to hold onto the puck and bring it to the top of the crease where he stood 1-on-1 with Devils goaltender Chris Terreri. With Terreri flopping on the ice in desperation, Jagr calmly flipped a shot over Terreri’s outstretched body and then raced around the arena ice jumping up and down and pumping his bare fist in the air in celebration. Jagr’s goal ended a thrilling hockey game that saw the Penguins rebound from deficits of 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 thanks to goals from Kevin Stevens, Paul Coffey and Bourque. Prior to Jagr’s goal, Pittsburgh’s only lead of the night came when Troy Loney gave the Penguins a brief 4-3 lead 3:21 into the third period, an advantage that last all of 45 seconds before New Jersey’s Alexei Kasatonov tied the game at 4-4. Jagr was named the game’s No. 1 star thanks to his winning goal and an earlier assist.

WB/S FARM REPORT: BRAD SAVE AND A BEAUTY As a rookie coming off of a stellar third season at Northeastern University, Brad Thiessen joined the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at the most exciting time of the year for the entire Penguins organization — the last few weeks of the 2008-09 regular season. Although Thiessen did not get into any games in the American Hockey League, he was recalled by the Pittsburgh Penguins. He didn’t appear in any National Hockey League action at that time, either. But he did get to hoist the Stanley Cup. “I remember joking with some of the guys that two months earlier I was sitting in a classroom doing tests and writing papers,” Thiessen laughed. Nearly two full seasons have passed since the native of Aldergrove, British Columbia joined six other players on the “taxi squad” that joined in the celebration that glorious June 12, 2009 at Joe Louis Arena. And now, in just his second professional season, Thiessen has helped guide the Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins to the best record in the American Hockey League, and is focused on hoisting one other important trophy.
Brad Thiessen may not have spent any time on the NHL ice in 2008-09 but he was in the locker room in Detroit on June 12, 2009.
“What we’re all working on here in Wilkes-Barre is trying to get up to the NHL,” Thiessen said. “When that time comes, I think I’ll be ready for it. But right now I’m trying to focus on getting Wilkes-Barre the Calder Cup. That’s what our goal is here. That’s what we’ve been working hard for all year. We have a great group of guys and it’s been fun to be here all season.” One year ago, the Penguins were in a battle with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers and the Norfolk Admirals for the last playoff spot in the East Division. The Penguins ended up with 87 points, while Bridgeport, fifth-place finishers in the Atlantic, crossed over with its 86 points and bumped Norfolk (84 points) out of contention. The playoff race was closer than even the numbers indicate. And it was in Norfolk where Thiessen stopped 57 of 58 shots over a two-game set to help the Penguins get continued on page 150

some breathing room in the East division. Although he wasn’t enjoying the fun of “being here all season”, he made the most of it upon his return. “I was just trying to provide a little consistency for the guys,” Thiessen said about being former head coach Todd Reirden’s go-to goaltender. “We were going through a stretch where we weren’t playing really well as a team, and it was time for someone to try and step up. I took that upon myself to try and be that guy. It’s something that I was used to being in college, I got the chance in Wheeling to get into a rhythm of playing in games, and when I got back up here I was given that opportunity and I was able to take advantage of it.” In his first summer between professional seasons, Thiessen looked to maximize his potential by working hard on his angles, working to see through screens, and making sure he was battling in every situation at the top of his crease. He is now on the threshold of becoming the third Penguins goaltender to post 30 wins in a single season, and is poised to lead the team well beyond April 10th. The most impressive of Thiessen’s victories this season came in early February. The team faced a stretch of five games in seven nights beginning on February 7, thanks to the team having to play a makeup game in Atlantic City against the Albany Devils. The Penguins were then home to play the Manitoba Moose the next night, followed by three games in less than 72 hours: February 11 at Bridgeport, then home against Adirondack and Hershey the next two days. Thiessen played every game — and posted a 4-1-0 record, stopped 99 of 102 shots faced, recorded two shutouts, compiled a goals-against average of 0.60, and a registered save percentage of .971. And he did it after missing the previous six games due to injury. “That was a fun week,” Thiessen said. “It was a lot of hockey. And as a goalie it helps to get into that rhythm. Coach kept putting me in night after night, and I just went out there and played my best.” Thiessen is glad that the injury wasn’t serious enough to keep him out longer. The Penguins’ recent road trip began in Abbotsford, which lies just 20 minutes away from Thiessen’s family farm. His parents hosted the entire team and hockey Courtesy Anthony Fabrikant, AFC Media Photography
staff for lunch on the day they arrived. The Penguins then went on to post a 3-0-0-1 record as they returned home to prepare for the final home games in March. Maybe it gives new meaning to the term “home cooking”. PENS PROFILE: MAX TALBOT
As of mid-March, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin weren’t back in the Penguins’ lineup. Malkin (knee) was lost for the season. Crosby (concussion) was skating, but no return date was set. But another presence had returned to the dressing room, to hear Max Talbot tell it: Swagger. The confidence that goes with being good. “Not a bad swagger, but a good one,” Talbot said. “We know we can win with these guys. Sid and Geno are a huge part of our team. We’ve got other guys hurt, too, like [Brooks] Orpik. But we can play well without those guys. We know we can win. It’s what we’re doing right now.” Talbot made his comments in the aftermath of the Penguins’ 5-1 drubbing of Edmonton at CONSOL Energy Center on March 13. Talbot had a goal and an assist in that victory. After 72 games, Talbot had eight goals and 10 assists. “They don’t happen often, so I’ll take them,” a laughing Talbot said about his two-point outburst. “It feels good to get a goal.” But Talbot is no stranger to scoring: The 5-foot-11, 190-pound forward netted twice in Game Seven of the 2009 Stanley Cup Final to give the Penguins a 2-1 win Max Talbot had a goal and an assist in the Penguins at Detroit. His goal against 5-1 victory over Edmonton on March 13.

the New York Islanders on Feb. 2 gave the Quebec native 50 goals and 100 points on his NHL career. Talbot also contributed mightily on the penalty-kill against the Oilers. Late in the first period, the Penguins held Edmonton without a shot during a two-man advantage that lasted 1:46. Chris Kunitz scored less than a minute later to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead. “That was huge for us, the 3-on-5,” said Talbot, 27. “I don’t think we allowed a shot against. That’s pretty impressive. Guys, once again, were willing to block some shots and make the right play. Right after we killed it, the crowd got energized and we scored a big goal.” As of March 20, the Penguins’ penalty-kill ranked first in the NHL with a success rate of 86.4 percent. “We practice our power play every morning skate, but at the same time we practice our penalty-kill,” said Talbot. “Five-on-4, 5-on-3 — we know our roles. We know what to do. The key [5-on-3] is to try and find their shooter, which guy is going to shoot. Get in the lanes. Be good with your sticks.” The win over Edmonton came the day after a humiliating 3-0 drubbing by Montreal at CONSOL Energy Center. Talbot said the Penguins’ coaching staff had no harsh post-game message. One wasn’t needed. The Penguins came out strong and posted a very convincing victory vs. the Oilers. The triumph was the Penguins’ third in four games. “We all knew we played poorly,” Talbot said of the Montreal debacle. “We weren’t on pucks. We didn’t execute. It cost us big-time. For us, [the game against Edmonton] was about coming in ready and starting the game the right way.” Talbot netted a breakaway to give the Penguins a 2-0 lead 6:27 into the second period. The Pens never lost control after. The Penguins haven’t had many comfortable margins of victory since Crosby and Malkin went down. “We’re not used to it,” Talbot said. “It felt good, and we played good with the lead. It was up to us to rebound from the way we played [against Montreal]. We weren’t proud of the way we played. It was not the right way. Today was a test, and you saw how we responded.” The Penguins have remained true to their high-octane, head-north style even with Crosby and Malkin out. “We’re not playing different at all,” Talbot said. “Why change the approach you take? We have a system. We’re well-coached. Everyone has a job to do, and we’re doing it. It’s not about, ‘we’ve got to play more defensive.’ We’re playing the same way. Nothing has changed. And it’s working.”
