WIN A SUBARU OUTBACK FROM THE PENGUINS AND THE POWER OF BOWSER 6
SEE PAGE 64 FOR MORE DETAILS
AROUND THE NHL ‘24/7’ RECEIVES EMMY NOMINATIONS HBO Sports’ “24/7 Penguins/Capitals: Road to the NHL Winter Classic” series received three Sports Emmy nominations for Outstanding Edited Sports Special, Outstanding Post Produced Audio/Sound and The Dick Schaap Writing Award. The critically-acclaimed, four-part documentary showed life in the National Hockey League in a way it has never been publicly seen before, following Dan Bylsma’s Pittsburgh Penguins and Bruce Boudreau’s Washington Capitals as the two teams prepared to face-off at the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic on New Year’s Day at Heinz Field. The 32nd Sports Emmy Award winners will be announced May 2 in New York at the Frederick P. Rose Hall in the Time Warner Center.
‘CANES AND LEAFS ON THE BRINK The Carolina Hurricanes and the Toronto Maple Leafs are keeping their playoff hopes alive by continuing to win games down the stretch. With their 4-3 win over Ottawa on March 22, the Hurricanes stayed within three points of the Buffalo Sabres for the eighth and final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference. Toronto topped Minnesota, 3-0, that same night to stay within two points of Carolina (and five points from Buffalo). The Washington Capitals secured the league’s third playoff berth when they topped the Philadelphia Flyers in a shootout, 5-4, on March 22. With the win, Washington climbed to within one point of the Flyers for first place in the East.
Despite a blistering 22-6-6 run that began in late December and catapulted them to as high as fifth place in the Western Conference at one point, the Calgary Flames are seeing their playoff hopes flicker heading into their final seven regularseason games. They’re 1-3-2 in their last six games and are holding the 10th spot in the West. The Flames lost to Los Angeles in a shootout, 2-1, on March 20. So although that one point kept Calgary tied with ninth-place Dallas and eighth-place Anaheim — as all three teams have 85 points — the Stars and the Ducks each have three games in hand on the Flames, who has played the most games (75) out of all 30 NHL teams.

RON BURKLE Ron Burkle has now added a new arena — Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center — to his tremendous list of accomplishments in the business world. Burkle, widely recognized as one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 12th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have developed one of the outstanding ownership groups in all of professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his role in negotiations for the new arena deal. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for three-plus seasons and established new standards for television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits while winning acclaim as the No. 1 team in professional sports in Fan Relations. A consistent post-season threat on the ice, the Penguins reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009 and won the Cup in 2009. Young stars such as Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Jordan Staal and others have been signed to long-term contracts, ensuring that the team’s core will remain intact. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League and the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy. He has received numerous awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year and the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year award.

MARIO LEMIEUX Mario Lemieux always will be remembered for the magic he created on the ice, but one of the crowning achievements of his remarkable career came this season in his role as a businessman — the opening of CONSOL Energy Center, home of the Penguins and Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue. The new arena puts the exclamation point on Lemieux’s lengthy quest to ensure the Penguins’ long-term future in Pittsburgh and provides his adopted hometown with a spectacular state-of-the-art center for professional and collegiate sports, concerts, family shows and other events. “There were so many people who contributed to this project, including local and state political leaders, local business leaders, NHL officials and, of course, our fans,” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse, “but I think it’s safe to say that none of this happens without Mario Lemieux.” Even before the reality of CONSOL Energy Center, Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle had turned the Penguins into a premier NHL franchise, winning praise for off-ice business accomplishments in addition to creating a positive, player-friendly atmosphere on the hockey side. The Penguins have sold out a team-record 186 straight games, sold out every suite for three straight seasons and established records for local television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits. Over the summer, the Penguins were named the No. 1 team in professional sports in Fan Relations by ESPN The Magazine. Oh, and they won the Stanley Cup in 2009 — the third Cup of Lemieux’s career but his first as an owner. Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVPs trophies and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP, in addition to the two Cups. An immaculately gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $8 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario, his wife Nathalie and their four children live in Sewickley.

DAVID MOREHOUSE Pittsburgh native David Morehouse was named CEO of the Penguins in September and leads the team into an exciting new era at CONSOL Energy Center. Morehouse had served as team president since 2007, overseeing ticket sales, marketing, corporate sales, communications and brand development, as well as representing the team in corporate relations and governmental affairs. Under his leadership the Penguins have become one of the top organizations in professional sports — ranked No. 1 in Fan Relations and No. 5 overall as a franchise among 122 pro teams in North America by ESPN The Magazine. As team president, Morehouse implemented a brand strategy that featured a new commitment to marketing, fan interaction and community outreach, as well as a targeted focus on the team’s young fan demographic. Under his leadership, the Penguins have sold out every game for three straight seasons — the sellout streak was at 166 games entering 2010-11— while leading all U.S.-based NHL teams in local TV ratings last season and setting new standards for website traffic and social media. RAY SHERO Ray Shero, 48, is at the vanguard of the NHL’s new breed of general managers — steeped in family hockey tradition but on the cutting-edge of new technology and modernization in hockey operations, player relations and team management. His fresh ideas and calm but firm management style helped transform the Penguins from a team that did not qualify for the playoffs in 2005-06 to one that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2007-08 and won the Cup in 2008-09. During that time, he has moved boldly to ensure a strong future for the Penguins, signing six key members of the team’s core — Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Jordan Staal, Brooks Orpik and Kris Letang — to long-term contracts. Shero built on the team’s already strong foundation by adding key pieces in the 2010 offseason to set the Penguins up for long-term success. With shrewd maneuvering and an aggressive approach during the first day of free agency, he solidified the team’s blue line with the long-term signings of top-rated defensemen Paul Martin and Zbynek Michalek. Shero was named GM on May 25, 2006 and one of his first acts was to declare a goal of building a team that could compete for championships on a yearly basis. He revamped the team’s hockey operations staff and structure, upgraded professional and amateur scouting, added a team operations director and opened new lines of communication with the business side of the organization. In his first season, 2006-07, Shero led his team to its first playoff berth since 2001 and a 47-point improvement in the standings — the fourth-largest improvement from one season to the next in NHL history. Building on that success, the Penguins topped 100 points for the second straight season in 2007-08, winning their first division title since 1998 and advancing to the Stanley Cup Final, where they fell to Detroit. After a rocky start in 2008-09, the Penguins rallied when Bylsma was named head coach in February, finishing 18-3-4 to earn a playoff berth and then defeating Philadelphia, Washington, Carolina and Detroit en route to the Stanley Cup. Along the way, they twice overcame 2-0 deficits in games (against Washington and Detroit), won all four seriesclinching games on the road and won two Game Sevens on the road — including the 2-1 thriller at Detroit for the Cup. Ray’s father, Fred, had won two Stanley Cups as head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers in 1974 and 1975. The Sheros are one of the few father-son tandems to appear on the Cup. The late Fred Shero also was a coach and general manager with the New York Rangers. Ray built his hockey sense and managerial style during 14 seasons as an NHL assistant general manager — six with the Ottawa Senators and eight with the Nashville Predators. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University, twice serving as team captain, and was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1982. He spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. The native of St. Paul, Minn. is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.

JASON BOTTERILL Jason Botterill enters his second full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position on May 22, 2009 by general manager Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockeyrelated matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top-minor league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 34, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins; his responsibilities included salary cap management, professional and amateur scouting and overseeing prospects development. Botterill’s avant-garde approach and understanding of the salary cap has been a major asset for the Penguins. Before joining Pittsburgh, Botterill worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was a first-round draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in 1994 and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo. He also played 393 career games in the AHL and IHL, recording 127 goals and 257 points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four seasons at the University of Michigan, where he earned his MBA, and helped lead the Wolverines to the NCAA title in 1996. He also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in 1994, 1995 and 1996, helping his team win gold medals in all three tournaments. He resides in Pittsburgh along with his wife, Andrea.

In just one-plus seasons behind the bench, Dan Bylsma has already become one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history. After being promoted to Penguins head coach in February 2009, Bylsma, 40, directed the team to its third Stanley Cup in franchise history — a feat previously accomplished by legendary coaches “Badger” Bob Johnson and Scott Bowman. In the process Bylsma became the 14th rookie head coach, and just the fourth in the past 50 years, to capture the Stanley Cup. Of those 14, only Montreal’s Al MacNeil (1970-71) took over mid-season. Bylsma has the best regular-season winning percentage (.659) in team history, and is tied with Bowman for most postseason victories (23) and series victories (5). He also became the eighth-fastest head coach in NHL history to hit the 50-win mark (78 games). All-time under Bylsma, the Penguins boast a 65-31-11 regular-season record; 35-13-5 home record; 31-17-6 road mark; 40-3-3 when leading after two periods; 42-1-1 when scoring four or more goals; and 43-9-6 when scoring first. In 2009-10 the Grand Haven, Mich. native completed his first full NHL season behind the bench for Pittsburgh, leading the club to a 47-28-7 record for 101 points — breaking 100 points for the sixth time in franchise history and for the third time in the last four years — finishing only two points behind New Jersey for the Atlantic Division title. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons as a right winger with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-2004. He played 429 NHL regular-season games, recording 19 goals and 62 points, and also played in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final with Anaheim. He began his coaching career as an assistant with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks of the AHL in 2004-05 and made his NHL coaching debut as an assistant with the New York Islanders in 2005-06. Bylsma was an assistant coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for two seasons from 2006-08 and was named head coach at the start of the 2008-09 season. He went 35-16-1-2 in 54 games with WB/S before being promoted to Pittsburgh. He played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son and reside in the North Hills.

MIKE LANGE One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange enters his 35th season with the Penguins and will handle radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.
PHIL BOURQUE Two-time Stanley Cup champion Phil Bourque begins his seventh season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75+89) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88+111) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for FSN Pittsburgh’s coverage of Penguins hockey.
BOB GROVE After a 17-year career as the Penguins beat writer for the Washington Observer-Reporter, Bob Grove joined the team’s radio broadcasts in 1998 as a frequent studio host/co-host and is now in his sixth season as full-time host of the pre- and post-game broadcasts and intermissions on the Penguins Hockey Network. Grove wrote Pittsburgh Penguins: The Official History of the First 30 Years in 1997 and has contributed game notes to GOAL Magazine inserts or Icetime programs for every Pittsburgh home game since 1986. He was also a contributor to the second edition of Total Hockey and to The Game I’ll Never Forget. He is a senior writer covering hockey for the Pittsburgh Sports Report and also hosts “Heineken Hockey Hour” and “Bob Grove’s Hot Stove” on Penguins Radio at 105.9-HD 2.

LONEY TUNES It’s a little too early to identify Troy and Ty Loney as yet another pair in a father-son Penguins’ heritage that already includes Greg and Ryan Malone, Gilles and Eric Meloche and Bob and Brent Johnson. But hey, a guy can dream, can’t he? “Because he’s developing later he has vision, he just sees the ice really well,” Troy Loney said of Ty Loney, a 6-foot-3, 185-pound right winger with the Youngstown Phantoms in the USHL. “I try to be objective, but I see so many players that look the same. They all skate real well, have a really hard shot. They just don’t quite see what’s going on. “I would think in another year he’ll be right where I was playing at, 208, 210 pounds. If Ty can develop physically and catch up to his peers I think he has a good shot at being a pro if he wants to do that. “But that’s a long way off.” Fischer Photography
First on Ty Loney’s agenda is settling on a place to play college hockey. His team-leading 22 goals Troy Loney with his sons (L-R) Reed, Clint and Ty have formed a successful hockey family.
and 35 points through his first 46 USHL games this season have the colleges interested.
Providence, Bemidji State, Bowling Green, New Hampshire, Michigan and UMass-Lowell are among the schools that have expressed interest in Ty Loney, who played one season of high school hockey with the Pine-Richland Rams before moving on to the Pittsburgh Hornets and the Phantoms. Should multiple scholarship offers eventually be forthcoming, it would constitute a departure from the path Troy Loney took along the way to the NHL. “I never got to chose anything,” he said. “I was put on a junior team when 13 and haven’t had a choice since then. “It’s kinda cool when you get to have a say.” Former Penguins defenseman Ulf Samuelsson’s son Phillip, currently a sophomore at Boston College, was drafted in the second round by the Penguins in 2009. On the fifth round of that draft they selected Andy Bathgate, the grandson of the Andy Bathgate the Penguins acquired from Detroit in the Expansion Draft in June of 1967. So this family tradition theme might be about to really pick up some steam in subsequent seasons.

A broken wrist helped to limit Ty Loney to just 17 games in Youngstown last season (2-2-4). He’s found his game this season, and a spot on Youngstown’s No. 1 line with Jiri Sekac (39 points in 50 games) and Cody Strang (38 points in 50 games). Those three rank No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 on the Phantoms in scoring. Ty Loney was also leading Youngstown with seven power-play goals through his first 46 games. “He’s always been a good player but lately he’s really started to shine,” Loney said. “If he doesn’t commit somewhere this year he’ll get a lot of early action [from colleges] next year. “If you can score in the USHL you can score in college.” Troy Loney credits Ty’s scoring prowess to his vision, and to “good hands and a knack for finding the back of the net. “He has his old man’s hands,” Troy Loney added. Ty Loney was three when Troy Loney retired from the NHL after the 1994-95 season. From what Ty Loney has seen on video and heard about the old man, Troy Loney was “a hard-working, gritty, tough guy who was really good defensively, a good team player. “And he scored some pretty important goals from what I’ve seen,” Ty Loney said. Troy Loney, understandably, has been a big influence on his son’s development as a player. But so, too, have players of a more recent NHL vintage. Some of those have hands even more lethal than the old man’s. “Growing up I would watch different players and try different things,” Ty Loney said. “I always liked Alexei Kovalev as a player, and Jerome Iginla.” The next step toward following in those NHL footsteps could come in the Entry Draft in June, but Ty Loney, who turned 19 on March 1, isn’t sweating that just yet. “I’m not gonna be bummed out if I don’t get drafted,” he said. “Obviously, any kid would want to be drafted, but I don’t really worry about it.” He’s approaching making it to the NHL someday by following a similar

take-things-as-they-come timeline. “I guess you think about it more when you’re younger, when it’s kind of like a dream,” Ty Loney said. “But it’s not a big thing right now. I’m more focused on college and seeing where it goes from here. “I’m just trying to find the best fit.” Mike Prisuta is the sports director for WDVE-FM and the sports anchor for “Jim, Randy & the DVE Morning Show.”

BEAVER BADGERS A MAJOR BLACK and the One-On-One Competition Champions
CORY STEINLE/ OWEN SCHAEFER from Beaver Badgers A Major Black.
You can view previously shown competitions at pittsburghpenguins.com.
On Saturday, October 16, sixteen youth hockey teams from the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) in the Pee Wee age group (age 11 - 12) participated in a shootout competition at CONSOL Energy Center. The event was videotaped to be shown in episodes at Penguins home games. The first round of competition featured heats between two teams striving to advance to the next round. Sixteen teams fielded five skaters shooting against the opposing team’s goalie. After each team competition, an individual shooter and goaltender squared off against the opposing team’s individual tandem for a one-on-one competition. Each winning team and pair of individuals advanced to the next round of eight teams/tandems. The format repeated as teams and individual pairs advanced through the quarterfinal heats to move on to the semi-finals. Robust competition marked the semi-final round for teams and individual tandems. The remaining two teams and individual tandems then had to “leave it all on the ice” in vying for the championship. Early in the second intermission of each Penguins home game the various heats in the competition will be featured. Enjoy each episode.

I feel
.
Ask a grieving child how they’re feeling and you may get a lot of answers. Or none at all. For many, finding the words to express their feelings can be difficult. But while finding the right words may not be easy, finding the right place to turn to for help can be. At the Caring Place, we’re here when grieving children need someone to listen, to talk, or to just sit and be. For more information about one of our peer support groups or to volunteer, call us today.

OUR NEW HOME CONSOL Energy Center opened in August, 2010 as Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue — home of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins as well as other professional and collegiate sports, concerts, children’s shows, skating shows and more. It replaced the old Civic Arena/Mellon Arena, which had operated since 1961 and was home of the Penguins from their inception in 1967. It was the oldest arena in the National Hockey League. “CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins,” said David Morehouse, CEO of the hockey team. “With open concourses, comfortable seating, cutting-edge technology, a state-of-the-art scoreboard and sound system, and an extensive array of food and beverage options, it is

In its first few months, CONSOL Energy Center also hosted such acts as Lady Gaga and The Eagles; was home to the Pittsburgh College Hockey Showcase with Robert Morris; and featured multiple NCAA Division I basketball games, including the “City Game” between Pitt and Duquesne and the Big East/SEC Challenge. In its first season of operation, CONSOL Energy Center also will be home to the Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League — bringing indoor football back to the city for the first time in almost 20 years. A funding plan for the new arena project was completed in March, 2007, thanks to the combined efforts of Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, among others. The Sports & Exhibition Authority owns the building on behalf of the city and county, and the Penguins have the lease. The new arena is managed by SMG, with Jay Roberts serving as general manager.
The CONSOL Energy Center has already hosted acts such as Paul McCartney, The Eagles, and Lady Gaga. It was home to the Pittsburgh College Hockey Showcase with Robert Morris and has featured multiple NCAA Division I basketball games.

MY HOMETOWN:
MARC-ANDRE FLEURY SOREL, QUEBEC What was it like growing up in Sorel? All my family lived on the street beside me — all of my uncles and cousins. We had big yards and a cornfield in the back. The city is on the corner of two main rivers, so we went fishing and a lot of things like that. What did you do during the summer? I like to fish and do water sports and water skiing. I also like to play tennis and beach volleyball. Especially now when I go back I like to see my friends and family, as I don’t get to see them much during the season. Where did you and your friends hang out? We liked to ride our bikes down to the river and go fishing. We also played a lot of street hockey, pretty much every day. What was your favorite restaurant? There is a cantina; it is a good old spot that has the best french fries and hot dogs. Every time I go back I have to go there. What was your favorite sports team? The Montreal Canadiens. What is something people don’t know about Sorel? It is a small town with not many people, but I have brought the Stanley Cup back. Francois Beauchemin from Anaheim brought the Stanley Cup; Pierre Mondou from Montreal brought the Cup; and Eric Messier from Colorado has also brought the Cup back to Sorel. It is only a small town but we have some great hockey players, so it is pretty cool. What was your favorite part about growing up there? I love the outdoors and the water. I love how much hockey is played there and that there are a lot of outdoor rinks. 120

WHAT’S HAPPENING DEVELOPMENTAL PROGRAMS LEARN TO PLAY HOCKEY With the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and Dick’s Sporting Goods over the last three years the Penguins have provided over 2,200 sets of equipment free to local youth ages 4 to 7. This year, four girls-only programs will operate along side of our standard co-ed Little Penguins program. OPEN PRACTICE The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation presented the 2010 Pittsburgh Penguins Open Hockey Practice on Thursday, December 9, 2010 at the brand new CONSOL Energy Center. The event offered a rare opportunity for over 10,000 school students in grades one through eight from across Allegheny County to see the Pittsburgh Penguins at work. Students were entertained leading up to the start of practice with informational videos about behind-thescenes aspects of the team/facility, as well as educational elements related to the game (geography, math, etc.) each student received an activity book as a takeaway.
WELLNESS TRAINING K.A.M.P. AT UPMC SOUTHSIDE Presented by UPMC Sports Medicine and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. Young hockey players were divided into groups and performed a rotation of 10-minute drills, while UPMC Sports Medicine professionals provided assessments. While the athletes trained, their parents received lectures on nutrition, concussions and sports injuries in general. Over 150 athletes and parents attended the event.
132
CONCUSSION PROGRAM The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, in conjunction with UPMC Sports Medicine, are prepared to announce a comprehensive program for baseline testing and concussion education for all youth sports beginning at the earliest possible ages.
PENGUINS FOUNDATION CHARITY ASSIST RAFFLE The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Penguins Foundation are pleased to host the Penguins Foundation Charity ASSIST Raffle, raising money for a variety of local charities in the western Pennsylvania area. Look for ticket sellers in their red aprons at every home game. The minimum prize each game is $2,000!
NEW SPORTS INITIATIVES — COMING IN 2011 OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES In its efforts to fight the sedentary tendencies of America’s youth, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation is excited to offer outdoor programs to promote fun and organized physical activity. The program, to be revealed in January, is designed to take advantage of the growing popularity of hockey in the tri-state area by affording young players access to existing facilities and newly constructed outdoor multi-use athletic facilities. These programs provide safe areas to play games under the supervision of established organizations. SCHOOL PROGRAMS • FIRST STRIDE In the ultimate Field Trip, participating schools will be provided with a Penguins-themed hockey experience: Students will be transported to and from a local ice arena, outfitted in full hockey equipment and learn fundamental hockey skills. The program will conclude with each child scoring their first goal! • GYM CLASS FOR A DAY This program is designed for 4th and 5th grade physical education classes and will provide basic skills and game instruction. Gym Class for a Day will transform your school gymnasium or parking lot into a dek/ball hockey rink. The Penguins will provide equipment for an ongoing P.E. Hockey Program. Penguins staff will be on hand to assist P.E. teachers in demonstrating and administering basic hockey skills and games. Each student will be provided a hockey ball and Penguins t-shirt to take home and continue practicing their skills.

KUNITZ GETS HIS GROOVE BACK Lady Luck has not been kind to Chris Kunitz over the past two seasons in terms of injuries. He missed 13-straight games from Feb. 8 to March 5 after missing a combined 28 contests in the 2009-10 campaign, his first full season in a Penguins uniform after being acquired from Anaheim at the trade deadline in March of 2009. Its been “really frustrating” for Kunitz to have to deal with being out of the lineup for extended stretches of time over the past two seasons — especially since he is an absolutely vital component of the Penguins’ success when he is healthy. Pittsburgh has won eight of the last nine games Kunitz has scored and 10 of the

past 11 games he has recorded a point, and he brings that spark that seems to give the lineup a boost every time he hits the ice. “He’s one of our best players,” forward Craig Adams said. “I think he’s the guy you can rely on to be consistent all the time and you know the kind of game he’s going to bring. He’s going to be tenacious and physical and he can score when he gets the chance. So he’s definitely an important player for us and we’re a better team with him, for sure, in the lineup than without.” Linemate Jordan Staal agreed, saying “He’s definitely a player we look to to try and turn a game around if we’re heading in the wrong direction.”

Injuries are the uncontrollable aspect of being a professional athlete. What Kunitz says he has done to help him deal with them over the past two seasons is to accept that they’re going to happen and do whatever he can to contribute upon his return — including trying to improve upon parts of the game he has noticed could use some polishing while watching from the sidelines. He’s certainly done that upon his return, as Kunitz tallied a pair of goals in his third game back on March 13 in a 5-1 win versus Edmonton, including one on the Penguins’ struggling power play. He then followed that performance with three assists on March 15 in a 5-1 victory over Ottawa, tallied a shorthanded goal in a 5-2 loss to New York Rangers on March 20 before adding a goal and an assist in a 5-4 shootout victory over Detroit on March 21. “’Kunie’ was out for a while and he had to get his legs under him and start feeling comfortable,” Staal said. “And he’s obviously starting to get back to the way he can play and the way he was before he was hurt.” Kunitz agreed, also citing the fact that getting used to new linemates in Staal and Tyler Kennedy took some adjusting as well. “I’m playing with some new linemates in ‘Staalsy’ and ‘TK,’” Kunitz said. “It took a little bit to maybe know where they were on the ice and stuff, but the last couple of game, we’ve been clicking pretty good, getting some good scoring chances.”

(especially on the power play) and veteran leadership to the locker room (he wears an ‘A’ on his jersey at times), but he can score goals as well — and he does it consistently.
Kunitz had three assists on March 15 in the Penguins 5-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators.
He has reached the 20-goal mark for the fourth time in the past six seasons and has 37 points (19G-18A) over his past 43 games, an average of 0.86 points-per-game. “He’s obviously put up some great numbers for us,” Staal said. “When we need him away from the puck, he does some great things. But offensively, he’s put up some really good numbers.” Rookie Dustin Jeffrey said Kunitz’s consistency is something that younger players like himself aspire to. “The way he’s played over a long stretch of time is obviously something all players strive for,” Jeffrey said. “And I think the way he carries himself day in and day out, it’s something that you can really model what you want to do after.” Kunitz is quickly gaining his confidence back, which Adams said will be crucial for the Penguins in their last 10 regular-season games. “It would have been interesting to see without the injuries and stuff what kind of numbers he could put up,” Adams said. Rookie Dustin Jeffrey aspires to be as consistent as Kunitz is day in and day out.
“But we want him hot from here on out.”

COMMUNITY UPDATE
The Penguins players donned tuxedos and passed plates instead of pucks on March 17 at CONSOL Energy Center as they hosted the Skates & Plates Charity Gala presented by Trib Total Media to benefit the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, the Western PA Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the Mario Lemieux Foundation. Since 1986, the team’s annual benefit dinner has raised over $5 million for Pittsburgh area charities with an emphasis on medical research. “This is our signature event,” head coach Dan Bylsma said. “And it’s a very special event.” The event featured Penguins players wearing tuxedos — complete with vibrant green vests and green ties in honor of St. Patrick’s Day — and serving as waiters for the evening. Each player was assigned a table (or in some cases, two) to serve. “For us, it was for charity, but also to meet the Pens, of course,” said Karie King of attending the event for a second-straight year. “The team does such wonderful work and donates their time for the charities. Just to be able to meet them on a personal level, you just become a more avid fan. It’s really cool.” King had Penguins captain Sidney Crosby as her server last year. This year, goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury waited on her table. “Just to interact with our fans and it’s for a great cause,” Fleury said of what he enjoys the most about events like this. “People are very generous when they come down. Just to be a part of it and helping raise some money, helping this cause, I think it’s good.” Penguins newcomer James Neal captured top tip honors and bragging rights this year with Eric Godard and Marc-Andre Fleury finishing second and third respectively. Fleury also won top tip honors two years ago with Maxime Talbot. Last year, it was Sidney Crosby and Brent Johnson sharing top honors. “I take pride in getting the best tip, because it’s all going to charity,” Talbot said. “We’re lucky to have good tables as well, where they don’t care how good the service is sometimes.”
150
Talbot said that with a smile, as he actually spilled soup on himself his first year doing the event. But although the Penguins are more deft with pucks than plates, they understand the importance of this event — and enjoy every minute of it. “It’s awesome,” Mike Rupp said. “When you have an opportunity to see firsthand the difference it makes in people’s lives, I mean, that’s what we all do it for — to make a difference.” Everyone in attendance had nothing but nice things to say about having the event at CONSOL Energy Center for the first time. In previous years, the gala had been held at venues such as the Carnegie Music Hall and The Pennsylvanian. “I actually enjoy it more here at the arena, because out here on the ice, it’s a little bit special,” said Jim Crockard, who sat at a table served by Zbynek Michalek. “Usually you’re up there in the seats or up in a box watching the game. Down here, you kind of feel like you’re a little more connected to what’s going on with the team.” Penguins general manager Ray Shero agreed, saying “This is, I think, by far the best venue so far. This has been great. We’ve had a great time the past five years I’ve been here, but today, taking a look at this, everybody’s really impressed with what they did here.” All in all, it was a fantastic evening for everyone involved. “We like supporting these organizations,” Crockard said. “And this is about the most fun event in town, so you can’t say no to this!”

THE PENGUINS GAME VAULT FEBRUARY 2, 1989 • PENGUINS 5, FLYERS 3 SPECTRUM Twenty-two years later, the Penguins’ 42-game winless streak at the Spectrum in Philadelphia still seems like an almost impossible feat to accomplish. But as improbable as it seems, the Flyers were somehow able to go 39-0-3 against the Penguins in their home building from Jan. 20, 1974 through Dec. 8, 1988 — span of 16 seasons. Finally, on Feb. 2, 1989, the Penguins had enough. Backup goaltender Wendell Young played the game of his life, stopping 36 of 39 Philadelphia shots, and Mario Lemieux, Robbie Brown and John Cullen each finished with a goal and an assist as Pittsburgh Rob Brown exorcised its demons in the ‘City of Brotherly Love’ by skating away with a 5-3 victory over its cross-state rival. The Penguins came out strong against the Flyers, taking a 2-0 lead behind a Cullen power-play tally midway through the opening frame and a late-period goal from Phil Bourque. Philadelphia cut its deficit in half as Ron Sutter scored with 57 seconds remaining before the first intermission to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Penguins. While Penguins’ teams of the past would have come unraveled following Sutter’s goal, this Penguins’ squad had a different makeup. Instead of falling apart, they responded emphatically to the Sutter tally by notching the only two goals of the second period as Bob Errey (shorthanded) and Brown scored to increase Pittsburgh’s lead to 4-1 after 40 minutes. Not surprisingly, Philadelphia didn’t blink at falling behind by a three-goal deficit. Mike Bullard, who once scored 50 goals for the Penguins in 1983-84, beat Young 1:09 into the third period to again cut the Penguins’ lead in half, 4-2. Following the Bullard goal, Young stymied his former Flyers teammates with save after save. Dan Quinn put Philadelphia away for good by scoring at the 6:36 mark to put the Penguins in front by a 5-2 margin. Philadelphia’s Pelle Eklund beat Young late to get the Flyers within 5-3, but when the final horn sounded it was the Penguins ending 16-plus years of frustration by getting an enormous monkey off their backs. Young, who was acquired by the Penguins from Philadelphia on Sept. 1 of that season, earned the game’s No. 1 star. With the intimidation factor of the Spectrum a thing of the past, the Penguins went on to win their next two games in Philadelphia that season — a 6-5 overtime victory in the regular-season finale on April 2 and a 4-3 overtime win in Game Two of the teams’ Patrick Division Finals matchup on April 21.

PENS PROFILE: BROOKS ORPIK
It was mid-February. Brooks Orpik was discussing the Penguins’ cornucopia of injuries. “I’ve never seen anything like this before,” the defenseman said. A few days later, Orpik got hurt. He broke a finger during the Penguins’ 3-2 OT loss to San Jose on Feb. 23 at CONSOL Energy Center. When it rains, it pours. But injuries haven’t deterred the Penguins, and this one only momentarily derailed Orpik. As of March 21, the Penguins stood 42-23-8 and, all things considered, an impressive fourth in the NHL’s Eastern Conference. Orpik, meantime, was scheduled to return to practice within days. Evgeni Malkin: out for the season. Sidney Crosby: out since early January. Jordan Staal missed the first half of the campaign. Orpik, Chris Kunitz, Mark Letestu, Zbynek Michalek, Arron Asham and Mike Comrie all missed significant portions of the season due to injury. Yet, the Penguins battled for the top spot in the Eastern Conference. Yet, Orpik wasn’t necessarily satisfied. “I think you look back and think about the games where you could have done a little better, where you let points slip away, rather than look at some of the positives,” said Orpik. “We’re trying to weather the storm the best we can.” Before getting hurt, Orpik had one goal, 11 assists and a plus-9 mark in 56 games. He and Kris Letang enjoyed a formidable defense partnership. Orpik, 30, insists the Penguins haven’t gotten more conservative despite losing a lot of goals via the Malkin and Crosby injuries. “If you sat in on any of the meetings we’ve had, you’d know nothing has changed at all,” said the 6-foot-2, 228-pounder. “You’ve got to be realistic about the situation. You’re probably not going to score as many goals. The onus is on the defense and goaltenders to maybe play a little better. To be a little more focused. We can’t give up as many goals, because we won’t score as much. So the focus might be a little sharper. “But systematically, nothing has changed in terms of what the coaches are preaching to us. “The coaches stress they need us to be who we are and do the exact same things we do when we have a normal lineup. You might get a little more ice time. You might be on the power play. You’ve got to make the most of it. Some guys had to get in better shape to handle the extra ice time.” Injury provides extra opportunity to those still standing. When asked who had made the best of getting a shot at bigger and better, Orpik responded, “Tyler Kennedy with the goals. [10 from February 2-March 21.] Guys are getting more ice time. They’re getting more opportunity. But using that to produce is easier said than done. You’ve still got to produce, and TK has done a great job.

“Jordan Staal. If you look at points, he’s probably right there. But look at his all-around game. He’s eating at a lot of minutes, and he’s playing center, which takes a lot out of you. Both goalies have stepped up really, really big for us, too.” Orpik went on to praise the Penguins’ netminders even more effusively, saying, “[Marc-Andre] Fleury’s got to be close to the best goalie in the league. I don’t want to label him that. I don’t want to put too much pressure on him. But he’s been great for us all year. As consistent as I’ve ever seen him. “Even at the beginning of the year, when he had a so-called rough start, that had more to do with some of the guys in front of him not playing their best. If not for him and [Brent Johnson], we wouldn’t have the point total we do.” Orpik also credited players the Penguins called up from their Wilkes-Barre/Scranton minor-league affiliate. “Guys aren’t going to come up and be Geno or Sid, or produce like those guys do,” Orpik said. “But those guys never know if it’s going to be their only opportunity, so they’re excited and they try to make the most of it. With those guys, you know the focus and effort is going to be there.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).
