GAME NOTES BY: BOB GROVE

THE SERIES

Tonight the Edmonton Oilers make their first appearance in Pittsburgh in more than two and a half years, since a 5-1 Penguins’ victory here on March 13, 2011. Chris Kunitz had a pair of goals and Tyler Kennedy three assists in that victory. . . Thus, this will be the first Pittsburgh appearance for young Oilers’ stars Taylor Hall, Nail Yakupov and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, as well as the first game in an Edmonton uniform against the Penguins for former Pittsburgh defenseman Andrew Ference, who signed with the Oilers in the off-season. . . Pittsburgh has won four of the last five games between the teams, although Edmonton won the most recent game, a 2-1 shootout victory in Edmonton on Oct. 9, 2011 in which Nugent-Hopkins made his NHL debut and scored his first NHL goal with 4:55 to play in regulation and Ales Hemsky added the shootout winner. . . Pittsburgh has points in 10 of its last 11 home games against Edmonton (8-1-2), the only regulation loss in that span coming on Jan. 10, 2006 (1-3). The Penguins have scored at least four goals in 12 of their last 15 home games against the Oilers. . . Pittsburgh has a power-play goal in five consecutive games against Edmonton (5-for-24, 20.8 percent), while the Oilers are 2-for-18 (11.1 percent) in that same span. . . Sidney Crosby has not faced the Oilers since Jan. 14, 2010 in Edmonton and has not played here against them since Nov. 6, 2008. Edmonton, continued on page 7

continued from page 5

Chicago, St. Louis and San Jose are the only teams against whom Crosby has never scored a goal. He is 0+4 in four games against the Oilers. . . Evgeni Malkin has not faced Edmonton since Jan. 14, 2010 in Edmonton and had three assists in his only career home game against the Oilers on Nov. 6, 2008. . . Marc-Andre Fleury has won each of his past four starts against Edmonton, allowing only nine goals in those games. . . The Penguins are 26-35-4-1 all-time against the Oilers, including a 17-13-3-0 mark at home. . . The teams’ next meeting is Jan. 10 in Edmonton. THE PENGUINS

Pittsburgh is 3-0 at home to start the season for the first time since 1995, when the Penguins got off to a 12-0-1 overall start. The team record for consecutive home wins to start a season is seven, set that same season. . . Pittsburgh’s last home game was a 5-2 victory over Carolina, its sixth straight home win over the Hurricanes. Former Hurricane Jussi Jokinen recorded his second career hat trick in the game, the 200th all-time hat trick by the Penguins in the regular season. . . At that point, continued on page 8

continued from page 7

Pittsburgh was 25-0 the last 25 times it recorded a regular-season hat trick . . . Rookie defenseman Olli Maatta recorded his first two NHL points in the win over Carolina, both assists . That game also saw Sidney Crosby record his first two assists of the season . . . Center Brandon Sutter had points in each of his last six regularseason games (0+6) before playing in Florida last Friday and Tampa Bay last Saturday . . . The Penguins were a perfect six-for-six on the penalty kill through the first three games of the season . . . Pittsburgh went two-for-three on the power play in the win over Carolina, its first two power-play goals of the season . . . Kris Letang was eligible to come off the injured reserve last weekend, although Tomas Vokoun and Matt D’Agostini remain on long-term injured reserve . . . The Penguins play in Philadelphia on Thursday and then return home Saturday to face Vancouver in a rare afternoon game in October . THE OILERS

Edmonton won just one of its first three games to open the season before hosting Montreal last Thursday . The Oilers then began a six-game road trip in Toronto on Saturday and played last night in Washington, making this their third game in four nights . The Oilers will play on Long Island on Thursday, in Ottawa on Saturday and in Montreal one week from tonight before returning home to face Washington on Oct . 24 . . . Edmonton’s first victory of the season came Oct . 7 at home against New Jersey in a game in which it trailed, 3-0, in the third period before earning a 5-4 shootout victory . . . Hemsky was leading the Oilers in scoring with one goal and four points through the first three games. . . Nugent-Hopkins returned from shoulder surgery to make his season debut in the victory over the Devils, scoring a goal . . . Hall began the season at center but was later moved back to the wing .

HISTORIC VICTORY:

Toronto’s 5-4 shootout win over Ottawa on Oct . 5 was the 2,700th victory in franchise history (Maple Leafs/St . pats/Arenas) . Toronto improved to 2,700-2,587-783-101 through 6,171 all-time games with the W . Goaltender Jonathan Bernier picked up the decision in relief, having come on for starter James Reimer with the Maple Leafs trailing 4-2 in the second period . Bernier stopped all 15 shots he saw in regulation and overtime and was un-scored upon in the shootout on the way to becoming the second goaltender in Toronto history to win in a shootout in a game he did not start (Curtis Joseph, March 24, 2009 vs . Washington) . The Maple Leafs opened a season with consecutive road games and won them both for the first time in franchise history .

YOUNG GUN:

Colorado center Nathan MacKinnon, the No . 1 overall draft pick in 2013, became the youngest player in franchise history when he made his NHL debut at 18 years, 31 days old on Oct . 2 . That honor had previously belonged to Owen Nolan (18 years, 235 days) . MacKinnon (this year) and Nolan (1990) are two of four first-overall

picks in franchise history, along with Mats Sundin (‘89) and Eric Lindros (‘91) .

HIM AGAIN:

Shane Doan of Phoenix entered the season as the NHL’s longest-tenured captain, having been elevated to his current post with his current franchise on Sept . 9, 2003 .

THE PETER PRINCIPLE:

The fourth 0-3 start in Flyers’ history cost head coach Peter Laviolette his job . Philadelphia had previously opened 0-3 in 1989-90, 1994-95 and last season . Craig Berube became the 18th head coach in Flyers’ history upon replacing Laviolette .

YOUTH MOVEMENT:

The Sabres have dressed as many as three teenagers — center Zemgus Girgensons, center Mikhail Grigorenko and defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen — in the early going this season . That hadn’t happened in Buffalo since 1995-96, when the Sabres’ lineup at times featured five players under 20 (Jay McKee, Martin Biron, Wayne Primeau, Vaclav Varada and Curtis Brown) .

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 15th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including seven straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past six years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Known as Le Magnifique, Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario and his wife, Nathalie, and their four children live in Sewickley. For full bios, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

RON BURKLE CO-OWNER

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 15th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for six-plus seasons. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/ Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award. DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT

David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Penguins, overseeing every aspect of the team’s operations. Since Morehouse was named President in April, 2007, the Penguins have reshaped their image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010. He reports directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. An emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.based NHL, NBA and MLB teams in local television ratings during the 2012-13 season. The Penguins’ rating of 12.66 was the highest achieved by any U.S.-based NHL, NBA or MLB team on a regional sports network since 2002. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins led all U.S.-based NHL teams in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales. Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of the organization’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids ages 5-7 each year. The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He and his wife, Vanessa, have four children and live in Sewickley Heights.

Dan Bylsma is already one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history, leading the team to a Stanley Cup championship, winning the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s Most Outstanding Coach, and an Atlantic Division title in just four-plus seasons behind the bench. The Grand Haven, Mich. native will be Team USA’s head coach at the 2014 Winter Olympics Games in Sochi, Russia. Bylsma has led the Penguins to three 100-point seasons and five consecutive playoff berths, while becoming the winningest playoff coach in team history with 36 postseason victories and seven playoff series victories. continued on page 45

43

continued from page 43

Bylsma has the best regular-season winning percentage (.669) in team history with an all-time record of 201-93-25. His 201 wins are the second most in team history (Eddie Johnston, 232). He began the season in his first head coaching job, with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League, and finished the year by raising the Stanley Cup. Bylsma was promoted to Pittsburgh on Feb. 15, 2009, inspiring an 18-3-4 run in the final 25 games to climb from 10th to fourth place and home-ice advantage in the opening round. Bylsma joined the Penguins organization as assistant coach with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in 2006. Two seasons later he was promoted to WBS head coach in 2008-09. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-04. He was a member of Anaheim’s 2003 Western Conference championship team. Bylsma played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son, Bryan, and reside in the North Hills. For full bios, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

In his only full season as head coach in WBS in 2009-10, Reirden led the team to a 41-34-2-3 mark and a playoff berth. Prior to joining the Penguins organization, Reirden spent one season as an assistant coach with his alma mater — the Bowling Green Falcons. It has been Dan Bylsma’s dream to represent USA Hockey ever since he watched the United States win gold in 1980s “Miracle on Ice” as a 9-year-old boy growing up in western Michigan. And while Bylsma was not able to wear his country’s red, white and blue as a player, he will get the opportunity now as a coach — on the biggest international stage. Bylsma will be the head coach of the 2014 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team that will participate in the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, realizing a goal and an aspiration he has had for many years — 34, to be exact. “I can only come short on how it feels,” Bylsma said. “Really excited about the opportunity. I think as each moment passes, I’m more and more honored about the opportunity to wear the red, white and blue and to be the head coach of this hockey team and going over to Russia to win a gold medal. “I really think that the Olympic Games is such a special event for every athlete in every sport. So to be able to compete in the

Olympics, to be able to go over and compete for a gold medal, has been a dream for a long time. And as I became a coach and had eyed the U.S. team and that opportunity as a head coach, to have that now, just really looking forward to the opportunity and the honor to be a part of Team USA.” Bylsma has already achieved so much in his coaching career at just 42 years old, as he led the Penguins to the 2009 Stanley Cup in his first season behind the bench, captured the 2011 Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s Most Outstanding Coach and is overall one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history. And Bylsma’s involvement with USA Hockey has grown considerably the last couple of years, as he grasped any opportunity to get involved with the team in any way he could — starting with being an assistant coach at the USA Hockey National Junior Development Camp two summers ago (which determined the makeup of the U.S. National Junior Team that competed at the 2012 World Junior Championship). Bylsma also observed Team USA at the 2012 World Championship and helped other coaches with their development at USA Hockey’s National Hockey Coaches’ Symposium in Washington, D.C. in August, 2012. But this marks a new challenge for Bylsma, as Sochi will be his first time representing USA Hockey in international competition. He plans to use his experience coaching superstars Sidney Crosby continued on page 65

and Evgeni Malkin as part of his approach to handling an Olympic roster filled with the best American-born hockey players. “Just thinking about it and some of the challenges of picking a team, getting such a short time with that team before you go and play such meaningful games right off the hop when you get to Russia, it’s going to be such a short time,” Bylsma said. “The challenges are going to be great. Not just for the travel getting over there, the time change, but really one or two practices going into that tournament. You think of some of those things. “But the quality of the players and the number of players, I think just drawing upon the challenges of coaching some of the great players we’ve had in Pittsburgh is going to be a part of having such great players and a big roster going into the Olympic Games.” Bylsma may have a few familiar faces on his roster going to Sochi, as defensemen Brooks Orpik and Paul Martin should be in the mix for consideration, as well as forward Beau Bennett. And Bylsma will be working alongside a familiar face on the bench as Penguins assistant coach Tony Granato will be at his side. Also to top it off, Penguins general manager Ray Shero was named associate general manager for Team USA. Shero spent eight years as assistant general manager with the Nashville Predators under Team USA general manager David Poile’s watch between 1998-2006 before taking over in Pittsburgh. Team Advisory Group — which selects players for all U. S. National Teams, including Olympic teams — since February 2007. Shero’s relationship with Poile and his relationship with Bylsma has already helped make the process run smoothly. “It’s already been a big factor in such a short period of time since finding out about being the head coach, working with David Poile as the GM,” Bylsma said. “Ray has been a guy I’m very comfortable with and obviously his experience with David Poile, he’s been a big part of our conversations already in terms of going forward with the summer, the orientation camp and the picking of the team and the players heading over for the Olympic Games. So that familiarity and Ray’s experience with me and me with Ray, that’s going to be a big part of our team and the management staff. It’s already been a big part.” It’s going to be quite a road to the Olympic Games, and Bylsma knows that. But he also knows he has to stay focused on the main goal, winning gold — and enjoying everything that happens on the journey. “I think every day, some new realization about being in the Olympics, being on Team USA, competing for a gold medal, comes to mind,” Bylsma smiled. “I think the Olympic Village, the Olympic Games, competing on that grand stage is just every day, what an honor it is to be a part of it. It’s an honor to be the head coach and just really looking forward to that opportunity. Every day is dawning on me.” 66

JOIN THE RUSH! Introduced in the mid 1990’s, the American Eagle Student Rush Program is one of the most popular and well known marketing initiatives of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Designed to sell remaining game-day inventory, the American Eagle Student Rush program provides the Pittsburgh Penguins an opportunity to introduce new fans to the game of hockey at a discounted rate. During the 2013-14 season, at least 200 American Eagle Student Rush tickets will be made available for each regular season home game at CONSOL Energy Center. #ASKMEGNA

TWITTER Q&A

JAYSON MEGNA @JOHNNYLAMJONES How was your first season in WilkesBarre working with Coach Hynes and Naz? #AskMegna “Coach Hynes and Naz are great. I learned a lot from them. They take the time to really help develop their players. Anytime you need them, they’re there for you. I thought I benefited a lot from Wilkes-Barre last year.” @WOAHITSBECKY What are you hoping to learn from training camp this year? #AskMegna “It will be nice to get my first full training camp under my belt. I hadn’t had a full one yet. It was nice to get the experience, see what’s it like and keep learning from it.”

@JORDANJORDONYA Do you have any good luck charms or any pre game superstitions? #AskMegna “I don’t have many. I put my right side of my pads on before my left. I have a coffee before the game. That’s pretty much it.” @DBRAMMELLJR Have you eaten at Primanti Brothers yet? It’s a Pittsburgh MUST! #AskMegna “I haven’t yet. I’ve got to get in there and try it though.” @BRETTBEEBE Do you think the time you spent in Hermosa Beach this summer will benefit your play on the ice? #AskMegna “I don’t know if it’ll help benefit my play on the ice, but it definitely helped relax me. It was nice to take a break out in California for a couple days.” 97

PENGUINS SELECT

2013.14 ICE CREW As the Pittsburgh Penguins entered a new era at CONSOL Energy Center, the team also introduced a skating Ice Crew for the 2010-11 season. Putting the snow removal crew on skates added a new level of speed and excitement to the Penguins’ game presentation. The unique co-ed squad includes hockey players, figure skaters and speed skaters. The Ice Crew removes excess snow on the ice during TV timeouts, interacts with fans, executes intermission games and participates in community and charity events throughout the season. The Ice Crew continues to grow and will once again take the ice at CONSOL Energy Center this season. On Saturday, July 20 the Penguins announced the 2013-14 Penguins Ice Crew. The three day audition process consisted of several on ice drills and individual interviews. Of the 107 applicants only 23 were selected to represent the Penguins for the 2013-14 season. Returning to the Ice Crew are team members David Champe, Tara Coyne, Daniel Dugan, Annie Federoff, Pam Gerlowski, Matt Harrison, Lee Hlavay, Jordan Johnson, Cam Jurysta, Rhiannon Kallis, Jared Manfredi, Anne O’Brien, Chris Smith, Laura Spencer, Steven Stepanian, Dan Thiessen Joining the veterans are first-time members Joey Alioto, Taylor Coyne, Corrie Jacob, Dylan Junker, Shay Gebler, Steven Geisel, and Emily Tarnow. CRAIG ADAMS

PENGUINS PROFILE:

CRAIG ADAMS BY: MARK MADDEN

Craig Adams, the Penguins’ union representative, started having a good season before the puck even dropped for the 2013-14 campaign. Last year, Adams was mired in the NHL lockout. This season, he just gets to play hockey. “It’s definitely one less thing to worry about,” said the 36-yearold forward. “The summer didn’t extend beyond when it should. “It wasn’t a distraction for me once the season started last year. I was fortunate enough — or unfortunate enough — to go through the [2004-05] lockout, so I understood what the process entailed. “Everyone was just excited to get back playing, and there were certainly no hard feelings within our organization.” Adams played a big hand in that. He did yeoman’s work keeping his teammates and the Pittsburgh media abreast of lockout happenings. Adams just gets things done. He’s a fourth-liner, but the Harvard University product is the type of player every team wants and none can do without. Adams came to Pittsburgh from Chicago on March 4, 2009, playing a role in the Penguins' Stanley Cup run that spring. He’s been a Penguin ever since. “It was a tough time for me,” said Adams, recalling his 71-game stint with the Blackhawks. “I’d had a pretty good stretch in Carolina. I had a home there and won a Stanley Cup continued on page 123

121

continued from page 121

there [in 2006]. Sometimes you think things won’t change. “But I ended up in Chicago, and it wasn’t a great situation for me. I didn’t have a lot of success on the ice. I was just hoping to get a chance somewhere, a chance to play and contribute. To keep my career going. “I came to Pittsburgh and obviously, we know how things turned out that spring. It was good timing and good luck for me.” The Penguins didn’t have as much luck in the 2013 playoffs, losing four straight games to Boston in the Eastern Conference Final. The Penguins scored just twice during the series. Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin got shut out. “Boston was a good team, but we had a good team, too,” Adams said. “If you’d told me at any point during the season that our downfall would be not being able to score enough goals, I’d have said you were crazy. “It wasn’t a series anyone expected. We certainly made some mistakes. Game Two [a 6-1 Penguins loss] was a game we look back on and regret we didn’t play well enough. But otherwise, it was a series between two evenlymatched teams and we couldn’t find a way to score goals. continued on page 125

“I don’t know how many posts we hit. In games that are 2-1 and 1-0, if a couple of those pucks go in, they change games. They change series. But certainly we didn’t deserve to win. They won four in a row.” Adams is very wellconditioned. He played in each of the Penguins’ 48 regular-season games in 2012-13, posting three goals and six assists. He played in each of the Penguins’ 15 post-season games, notching one assist. Adams made his NHL debut with Carolina in 2000-01. Adams' first game this season will be his 800th in the league. One of the primary concerns for the 6-foot, 200-pound Adams is the penalty-kill. The Penguins’ penalty-killing was disappointing during the regular season, finishing 25th in the NHL with a success rate of 79.6 percent. But the PK rallied in the playoffs, finishing second in the NHL by executing 92.3 percent of the time. The Penguins’ PK will break in some new personnel this season. The most significant loss may be Matt Cooke, who left via free agency. “Obviously, we struggled [on the PK] during the season,” Adams said. “That’s something we hadn’t dealt with in a while. Our numbers were worse than we felt we were. But we did really well in the playoffs. That was more in line with where we should be in terms of personnel and experience.” As for Cooke’s departure, Adams said, “Losing Matt is going to be a big loss. He’s a really good penalty-killer with lots of experience. I’m not sure who’s going to take those minutes. It probably won’t be one guy.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

For hockey players 10 years and under, Pittsburgh leads the country with a 120% growth rate in participation which can be attributed with the emergence of the “Little Penguins Learn to Play Hockey” program over the past five years. In other words, Pittsburgh has accounted for 15% of the growth in youth hockey in the United States. This program has provided the necessary equipment, FREE, to 1,000 local children on an annual basis, as well as provide on-ice instructional clinics to the children involved which have both aided in this growth. The 2013-2014 season will be the sixth consecutive season for the Little Penguins program which continues to grow in enrollment and popularity. This season, twenty-six instructional programs will be held at twenty-three area rinks, including four girls-only locations. Since it began in 2008-2009, over 4,200 children aged 4-8 have received free head-to-toe hockey equipment to all registered participants. This season, an additional 1,000 children will learn the game and be equipped properly to do so in this one of a kind opportunity. “We were both excited and amazed by the reaction to the Little Penguins program in previous seasons, and we’re happy to be able to offer the program again for another year,” Sidney Crosby said. “The goal is to continue to create opportunities for more kids in the Pittsburgh are to take up hockey. Penguins program, they can receive head-to-toe hockey gear and learn the game in a fun and organized way.” Thanks to The Pittsburgh Penguins, Dicks Sporting Goods, Reebok, the Penguins Foundation and Sidney Crosby - all participants receive full sets of Reebok SC87 equipment, including skates, stick, helmet, gloves, pants, shoulder pads, shin pads, elbow pads, an equipment bag, as well as an official Little Penguins Jersey and helmet stickers. This program through its popularity is beginning to be emulated from other NHL teams to incorporate in their respective cities. With five extremely successful seasons, the program sells out quickly. The pre-registration period, parents may view information regarding the rinks, starting dates, number of sessions and times of instructional sessions which are listed on the Penguins website. For participant convenience, registration will occur online at pittsburghpenguins.com. “We are extremely excited that we can continue the success of the Little Penguins program for a 5th consecutive year,” said Penguins Executive Director of Strategic Planning Rich Hixon. “One of the goals of this program is to not only get kids to start playing the game but to keep them playing for a lifetime. Currently, our conversion rates are nearly 50% of all participants who continue to play hockey well after this program. To provide children with head-to-toe hockey gear year after year is nothing short of a tribute to the generosity and character of not only Sidney Crosby, but to the efforts of Reebok, Dick’s Sporting Goods and the Penguins Foundation.“ 128

PENGUINS ELITE The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods, which is quickly becoming the premiere AAA hockey program in the area, will feature 14 teams — nine boys teams and five girls teams. The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite teams will compete in the Tier I Elite Hockey League that includes the Philadelphia Junior Flyers, the Buffalo Junior Sabres, the DC Capitals, the Dallas AAA Stars, the Phoenix Junior Coyotes and the Los Angeles Junior Kings, among others. The Elite programs, both boys and girls, are finding tremendous success on the ice as the U18 boys and U14 girls were Tier 1 Elite League Champions this past year. The U14 girls were also bronze medalists at the USA Hockey National Championships. In the National Championships all three eligible boys teams (Midget Major, U14, U16) reached quarterfinals. “Our goal is to make Pittsburgh Penguins Elite the best AAA hockey program in the country,” said David Morehouse, CEO and President of the Pittsburgh Penguins. “But it isn’t just about winning games and championships. is one of the largest girls’ tournaments in the US. “DICK’S Sporting Goods is thrilled to be the title sponsor of the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program. At DICK’S we believe sports matter and are committed to helping young athletes achieve their goals of playing at the highest level,” said Lauren Hobart, DICK’S Sporting Goods Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. “Our involvement with the Penguins Elite program is a great opportunity for us to support the growth of youth hockey in our hometown of Pittsburgh.” A tribute to the program’s success has been the players who have moved on to compete in college hockey across the country. This past year, the program has graduated eight girls to NCAA Division-III schools and two girls to Division-I (Syracuse, Boston College) totaling 13 girls currently playing Division-I college hockey. On the boys side, several Division-I commitments have occurred over the past 12 months, including Dartmouth, Ohio State and Miami (Ohio). The Elite boys programs have 47 former players currently competing in either college or junior programs. The boys teams practice and play home games at RMU Island Sports Center. The girls teams practice and play home games at both RMU Island Sports Center and Shadyside Academy. Both boys and girls also hold practices and games at the CONSOL Energy Center.

HEADS UP PITTSBURGH During the Summer of 2013, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine expanded their KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE concussion awareness program to include a free neck-strengthening kit during the new testing period. To date, over 8,000 youth athletes have been tested through the Heads Up Pittsburgh Program. Free Neurocognitive Baseline Testing was available for athletes age 10-14 at four Community College of Allegheny County campus locations — Boyce, North, South and the West Hills Center. Testing also took place at the UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side. In an unprecedented move to provide precautions and exercises that could reduce concussions, the first 2,000 participants during that time also received a free neck-strengthening kit. Experts believe this device will help to cut down the number of youthathlete concussions. Those participants that signed up at UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side and the CCAC North campus were also eligible to have their neck strength tested and be part of an ongoing UPMC research project. “We want to make the game safer for all young athletes. As a possible answer, we added the neck strengthening kit. Recently published research indicates that there is a direct correlation with improved neck strength and the reduction of concussions,” said Dave Soltesz, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. If you are interested in donating to the Heads Up Pittsburgh program or for more information, please visit the Penguins Foundation website at pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org or contact us at info@pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.com . 136

HOCKEY IS FOR EVERYONE For years Western Pennsylvania youth sports have been dominated by the likes of football, basketball and baseball. Recently however, the region has begun to see a change in preference and participation in sports. Hockey is rapidly becoming the most popular and fastest growing sport in the area. Success seen with the Pittsburgh Penguins on the NHL ice has surely created a demand and a certain excitement around the game, however the popularity of hockey goes well beyond the wins and world class talent the Penguins possess. A genuine love for the game is starting to sweep the area. Kids are beginning to play hockey at younger and younger ages thanks to the Little Penguins: Learn to Play Hockey program. This program will allow 1,000 kids, ages 4-8, to receive free headto-toe gear all thanks to the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and DICK’S Sporting Goods. Since it began in 2008-09 over 4,200 have been introduced to hockey through this program. The Penguins have also teamed up with the DICK’S Sporting Goods, Trib Total Media and the YMCA to create the YMCA Jr. Penguins program which introduces children to the sport through ball hockey. To this point well over 3,100 children have learned and participated in organized ball hockey at local YMCAs. Recently the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered together for Project PowerPlay, which will build 12 continued on page 140

dek hockey rinks throughout Allegheny County over a three-year period and allow local residents to play dek hockey for free. Dek hockey is becoming a great way to learn and play hockey without having ice, and was also vital in the development of current Penguins forward Beau Bennett who grew up in sunny California. On top of partnering with the Pennsylvania Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL), the Penguins and the Penguins Foundation have looked to support various hockey programs around the Pittsburgh area. The Steel City Icebergs is an adaptive ice hockey program for both children and adults with developmental disabilities such as autism, down syndrome and traumatic brain injuries. The Pittsburgh Mighty Penguins is a local sled hockey team, which is an internationally recognized event in the Paralympic games. The Mighty Penguins registered three teams on its roster that include youth, junior and adult players. Pittsburgh Ice (Inclusion Creates Equality) provides children, who may not otherwise have the opportunity, to play ice hockey at no cost and experience such a great game. Defending the Blue Line is a nonprofit organization created by soldiers with the spirit of keeping hockey alive for the children of our nation’s military heroes. It ensures that children of military members are afforded every opportunity to participate in the game of hockey by providing free equipment, hockey camps and financial assistance. 140

PROJECT POWER PLAY The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation’s Project Power Play initiative continues to flourish! The two newest dek hockey KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE rinks at Richland Township and Oakmont-Riverside Park are ready just in time for back-to-school programs to utilize. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, Highmark, the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County began Project Power Play in the summer of 2012 to build two new dek hockey rinks at Banksville Park and Lewis Park in Phase 1 of a three-year plan. By 2014, 12 facilities in the Pittsburgh area will house new dek hockey rinks and the goal of this project is to introduce children to the game at the grass roots level and give them a free venue to play, while keeping them active and having fun. The facilities, 155’ x 75’, are multi-sport courts and each includes a premier dasherboard system like those used in the NHL, players’ benches with shelter, penalty box, scorer’s table, scoreboard, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment. If you are interested in donating to the Project Power Play program or for more information, please visit the Penguins Foundation website at pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org or contact us at info@pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.com . 143

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 39th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. NHL REALIGNMENT By: Michelle Crechiolo

Last season, Pittsburgh finished first in the Atlantic Division, ahead of the New York Rangers, the New York Islanders, Philadelphia and New Jersey. This upcoming season, the Penguins will be looking to defend that title against those same teams plus three new ones — Carolina, Columbus and Washington — in the newly created Metropolitan Division. As part of the NHL’s realignment plan that will be implemented for the 2013-14 campaign, the league will be in a more geographically appropriate two-conference, four-division format with 16 teams in the Eastern Conference and 14 teams in the Western Conference. The Eastern Conference divisions (Metropolitan and Atlantic — which will now consist of Boston, Buffalo, Detroit, Florida, Montreal, Ottawa, Tampa Bay, and Toronto) have eight teams in each while the Western Conference divisions (Central and Pacific) have seven teams in each. HERE’S HOW REALIGNMENT AFFECTS PITTSBURGH’S SCHEDULE…

In total, the Penguins will play regular-season games this season — 30 against their seven fellow Metropolitan Division foes; 24 games against the eight teams from the Atlantic Division; and 28 games against the 14 teams from the Western Conference.

Pittsburgh will play five games against the Philadelphia Flyers (3 home; 2 away) and Columbus Blue Jackets (2 home; 3 away), and four games (2 home; 2 away) against the other five Metropolitan Division teams.

The Penguins will play three games each against the eight teams in the Atlantic division — either two at home and one away or once at home and twice away. Teams that the Penguins will play twice at home and once away are Buffalo, Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. Pittsburgh will play Boston, Detroit, Florida and Tampa Bay just once at home.

And finally, for the first time since the 1997-98 season, the Penguins will play each of the 14 Western Conference teams once at home and once on the road. continued on page 162

continued from page 161

METROPOLITAN DIVISION

The pre-realignment Atlantic Division was known for being one of toughest and most competitive divisions in the NHL, as it was not uncommon to see all five teams battling until the end to make the playoffs every year (and usually at least three advancing). Plus, the gap between the first-place team and the last-place team tended to be relatively small, especially compared to the gaps in other divisions. It also had some of the most intense rivalries, starting with the legendary, hate-filled and bitter one between cross-state teams Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. And there was no love lost between the Penguins and any of the other teams in the division, either. It doesn’t look like the new Metropolitan Division will be any friendlier. All of the rivalries from the former Atlantic Division, of course, will stay intact. The Capitals are already a current rival of Pittsburgh with all of the star power and history, and now that they’ll see more of each other we can only speculate as to how much more intense that will become. And there’s also more juicy potential for dislike to build between the Penguins and both the Hurricanes and Blue Jackets. continued on page 164

NEW ADDITIONS: COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS

The main reason Pittsburgh and Columbus could develop an exciting rivalry is the short distance between them. All seven of the Penguins’ Metropolitan Division opponents are within driving distance, but Columbus is by far the closest at just under three hours away. A lot of Penguins fans made the trip to Columbus the last time Pittsburgh played there on Dec. 4, 2010, with an influx of black and gold jerseys in the stands at the game. And with five games between the teams (three in Columbus, two in Pittsburgh) this season — including a home-and-home series on Nov. 1-2 — fans from both teams will venture into enemy territory to support their clubs. Call them destination rivals, if you will, with the added element of fan travel. WASHINGTON CAPITALS

The Penguins and the Capitals already have one of the NHL’s marquee rivalries. They clashed in the 2011 Winter Classic at Heinz Field, on a few Super Bowl Sundays and had an epic playoff battle in 2009 when Pittsburgh defeated Washington in seven games during the conference semifinals on its way to winning the Stanley Cup. Now that the two 164

teams (just a four-hour drive apart) are in the same division and will play each other four times this season — including a home-and-home series on March 10-11 — it could become even more intense. Pittsburgh and Washington developed such a strong rivalry because of star power. The Penguins have Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin while the Capitals have Alex Ovechkin. They are the three biggest superstars in the league and have been battling for individual honors (in addition to team glory in their playoff series) since Ovechkin broke into the NHL during the 2005-06 season. It’s always exciting to watch when they all go head-to-head. The Penguins-Capitals rivalry flared up in the 90s when the two teams met seven times in 11 years — with the Penguins winning in six of those series. That hatred has been carried over during the Ovechkin-Crosby/Malkin era. And it should only get hotter as the teams enter the same division.

CAROLINA HURRICANES

Pittsburgh’s rivalry with Carolina may not be as developed as it is with Washington, but it could get there. If it does, we’d bet it’s because of the Jordan Staal — Brandon Sutter trade. Staal, who played his first six NHL seasons with Pittsburgh, was a key member of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team and was part of the successful three-center model with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. But Staal wanted to play with his brother Eric, so the Penguins traded Jordan to Carolina at the 2012 NHL Draft for Sutter and prospects Brian Dumoulin and Derrick Pouliot. Staal signed a 10-year, $60-million deal with the Hurricanes a few days later. Staal came to Pittsburgh just once in his first season with Carolina, in the final game of the regular season. The sellout crowd at CONSOL Energy Center gave him an extended standing ovation as a tribute played on the video board, and Staal was emotional as he stood up and acknowledged the fans he had played in front of for his first six seasons. But now that that’s over and done with, don’t expect things to remain as friendly and cordial as they are now. Staal is an important part of Penguins history, but not their present or future. He’s a competitive guy, and the Hurricanes expect a lot from him. He’ll want to do everything he can to lead his team to success in the future, including beating his former team whenever possible. continued on page 168

PLAYOFFS

Realignment doesn’t just affect the regular season; it affects the postseason as well. The playoffs are now division-based and with an added wild-card system. The number of total playoff spots, 16, remains the same — eight for each conference. That means the Western Conference will have 14 teams competing for eight playoff spots, while the Eastern Conference will have 16 teams competing for eight playoff spots. It will likely end up being a tighter race for Pittsburgh and the rest of the Eastern Conference. The top three teams in the Metropolitan Division and the top three teams from the Atlantic Division will fill the first six spots. The remaining two spots (Nos. 7 and 8) will be filled by the wild-card teams, who are the next two highest-placed finishers in each conference based on regular-season points and regardless of division. That means the Metropolitan Division could send five teams to the playoffs while the Atlantic sends three; or vice versa. Or they could each send four. Regardless, the playoffs are now heavily based on divisional standings while before, only the division winner got a guaranteed spot in the playoffs. EASTERN CONFERENCE TOP

NHL.com explained the seeding best… “The seeding of the wild-card teams within each divisional playoff will be determined on the basis of regular-season points. The division winner with the most points in the conference will be matched against the wild-card team with the fewest points; the division winner with the second-most points in the conference will play the wild-card team with the second fewest points. The teams finishing second and third in each division will play in the first round of the playoffs. The winners of each series will play for berths in the conference championship series.” So while the wildcard system makes it possible to play a team in the opening round of the playoffs outside of the division, it’s more likely that teams will be playing the first two rounds against divisional foes. And we’ve seen first-hand the last few years just how intense that can be.

YOUTH HOCKEY POINTERS FROM COACH SKATE, SKATE, SKATE

No matter what level you are playing, skating is everything when it comes to hockey. However, skating isn’t just about being able to move backwards or forwards. Change of direction is critical when your team is on the transition from defense to offense, or vice versa. That makes being able stop, turn or pivot on a dime and quickly accelerate out of a start position as much a key to being a good skater as straightahead speed. Work hard to improve your skating when you can!

THE IMPORTANCE OF PASSING

Pay attention to your passing. Nothing moves the puck up ice quicker than a tape-totape pass. A good passing team is able to maintain possession of the puck for long stretches, putting itself in position continued on page 184

to generate more offense. What separates the great passers from the good ones is not only are they able to deliver the puck to a teammate when he or she is wide open, but they are able to use the boards and make area passes to teammates in traffic. “Practice perfect passing.”

GET TO THE NET

Everybody has probably heard the saying ‘good things happen when you go to the net.’ There is a good reason for that — everything happens there. When you have a chance to shoot, get the puck on net. You also have to make sure that you physically go to the net so that way you are there for tips, rebounds and screens — all plays that lead directly to goals.

WORK HARD AND HAVE FUN

We all want to be the best players we can be and help our team win each time we step on the ice. The easiest way to achieve this — WORK HARD EVERY TIME you step on the ice because work ethic is a huge key to being a successful hockey player. Just as important as working hard is ENJOYING THE GAME. Hockey is just that — a game — which means it is something we do to entertain ourselves. When you are having fun on the ice, chances are good that you are playing your best.

ICEBURGH A delight for children of all ages, Iceburgh — the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins not only provides fans with exciting game entertainment but this large, energetic bird can also be seen at a multitude of community events and elementary schools throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. Iceburgh arrived on the scene in 1992 and is a staple at all team events. During Penguins’ home games, fans most definitely notice the antics of Iceburgh leading sections of fans in cheers, greeting young children on the concourse or displaying his athleticism on-ice between periods. In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture “Sudden Death.” He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh wasted no time getting acquainted with his new home at CONSOL Energy Center in September of 2010. You can find Iceburgh sliding down stair banisters, dancing in the stands and tossing t-shirts to fans. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and recently performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. In addition to his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game, Iceburgh makes annual appearances at the Mascot Olympics held in Orlando, FL. PENGUINS DISPLAY GRASP OF WHAT THEY’RE AFTER FOR OPENERS BY: MIKE PRISUTA

Maybe they were still stinging from the manner in which last season had ended. Maybe they took the ice this season more determined than ever to become a difficult team to score against. Maybe the Devils made them do it. Whatever the reason, the Penguins opened 2013-14 playing the game the way it’s supposed to be played. Not from an execution standpoint, necessarily; that’ll take some time. But in terms of playing their systems and playing their positions individually and collectively, the Penguins hit the ground running on Oct. 3 against the New Jersey Devils. “Playing against New Jersey as much as we have in the past, they’re going to be a real patient team,” defenseman Brooks Orpik observed after the Penguin s had gotten their regular season rolling with a 3-0 shutout of the Devils on Oct. 3 at CONSOL Energy Center. “You can’ force things against them. You have to be patient yourselves. “It probably wasn’t the prettiest game for us, execution-wise, but I think we did a really good job positionally. We got a lot of good blocked shots. We got a lot of back pressure coming back continued on page 196

195

from the forwards. We didn’t run around in our zone. We stayed tight and the shots we did give up were for the most part from the outside.” Captain Sidney Crosby also invoked the “P-word” in characterizing the Penguins’ effort. “They’re solid and disciplined in the way they play,” Crosby observed of the Devils. “We stayed pretty patient. Our work ethic was right there.” The Penguins aren’t always accused of being patient, nor can they always recognize that element in their play. But for some reason it was for the most part there through season-opening victories over New Jersey, Buffalo and Carolina at CONSOL Energy Center. That patience and the sound, solid manner in which the Penguins regularly deployed themselves on the ice contributed mightily to the Penguins allowing just three goals in their first three games. The occasional off-the-post-off-his-back-off-the-post-againblind-behind-the-back glove save from goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury was also a factor. But the Penguins were supporting Fleury through those first three games much more than they were leaving him out to dry. In the event they get off track at some juncture there will be video evidence aplenty available for the Penguins to reference regarding what they’re after. It started against New Jersey, a game in which the Penguins set a tone for how they intended to go about the business of winning games this season. “Positionally, defensively, I thought we were good throughout the game,” head coach Dan Bylsma said. “I thought the six defensemen played real solid in the defensive zone, made several solid plays. And positionally our team was for the most part good throughout the game. “I love the way our team played defensively. I love what our defensemen did. continued on page 199

“I’m probably going to estimate that would be a scoring-chance game under 12 [allowed],” Bylsma continued. “At the end there were probably three or four [scoring chances] that Marc had to make big saves on. But we minimized it with how we played defensively.” The goal, as outlined by the Penguins’ coaching staff, is to hold opponents under 12 scoring chances a game. The Penguins’ season-opening, three-game winning streak also included plenty of blocked shots, the limiting, by and large, of shots against, the out-hitting of three consecutive opponents, disciplined overall play (six short-handed situations), perfect penalty killing (6-for-6), strong third periods and examples of the quick transitioning from defense to offense that the Penguins intend to rely upon this season. So there was a great deal to like about 3-0-0 and the manner in which it had been achieved. As the season continues puck possession and puck management will remain all-important objectives. When they’re at their best the Penguins will endeavor to play the game mostly in the opponent’s end, to “play defense with the puck, so to speak, in the offensive zone,” Bylsma said. That’ll come, hopefully, as the timing and execution sharpen during the course of the campaign. But the Penguins’ first three games nonetheless made a statement regarding their diligence, their attention to detail and their ability to produce results when at a capacity that falls short of their collective, explosive best. And that’s not bad, for openers. “It’s going to take time to improve and keep getting better,” Crosby acknowledged after the Devils encounter. “It’s going to be a process. “But I thought we worked really hard.” That’s not to be underrated in assessing what got the 2013-14 Penguins off and running. 199

THE FINNISH CONNECTION BY: DAVE UHRMACHER

When Penguins defenseman Olli Maatta found out he would be playing in the team’s regular-season opener on Oct. 3, like any 19-year old rookie making his NHL debut, nerves began to set in. Luckily for Finland native Maatta, teammate and countryman Jussi Jokinen was there to calm his nerves. “Before [that] night’s game, he told me to enjoy it because you don’t have another first game,” Maatta said. Those words of wisdom from Jokinen, 30, are just a small glimpse into the mentoring the veteran Finnish winger has done for the teenaged Maatta to help him acclimate to life as a professional in both the NHL and Pittsburgh. “First of all you need to remember he is 19-years-old,” Jokinen said. “It is pretty remarkable how good he is by 19, how mature he is. Obviously when I got to camp I wanted to make sure I got him to be as comfortable as possible. I watched him the first couple of weeks, and he didn’t need much advice. I just told him to enjoying playing your game and that is going to be good in this league.”

218

Eight years before Jyvasklya native Maatta cracked the openingnight lineup, Jokinen made a similar journey to North America from a city three hours north called Kalajoki — joining the Dallas Stars for the 2005-06 season after playing professionally in Finland for years. Jokinen said the transition Maatta made from Finland to London, Ontario at age 16 to become a member of the OHL’s London Knights has allowed OLLI MAATTA him to become more accustomed to the culture, and faster. “I was 22-years-old when I got over here, and you need to remember he was 16 when he got to London,” Jokinen said. “He has been there two years and I think you can see the difference right away. If he was 19-years-old coming right to North America there would be lots of new things, but he has been here two years already and is really comfortable with the language and all the other things. It’s been fun to watch and he is a great player, and an even better guy off the ice.” Maatta had visited Pittsburgh twice for the Penguins annual prospect development camp in July prior to training camp this year, but he said no one has helped him get used to the Penguins system more than Jokinen. “He has been a big part of helping me get used to the system on the ice and then helping me get used to the style of living here,” Maatta said. “He is helping me a lot with what is going on, with rules and just how to live here. He has been a big help.” And for Jokinen, it’s been nice having someone around who speaks his native language. “It's fun to be one of the countrymen continued on page 220

219

continued from page 219

on the team, he can speak some Finnish and stuff like that,” he smiled. With the Finnish connection between the two players, it was only fitting that Maatta recorded his first NHL point, an assist, on Jokinen’s second goal in Pittsburgh’s 5-2 win over Carolina at CONSOL Energy Center on Oct. 8. “It was a pretty easy point for me,” smiled Maatta, who skated on the third pairing with Robert Bortuzzo. “I just gave the puck to the forwards and they did the rest. You don’t really think about it during the game, but now it starts to sink in my mind that it’s pretty big. It’s great. I love it.” That moment in itself may have been enough for Maatta, but he wasn’t done there. Maatta followed that up with another helper on Jokinen’s third goal, and his two-point effort earned him Second Star honors. The teenager got to skate out in front of the home crowd and raise his stick to them as they cheered, a feeling a happily overwhelmed Maatta will likely never forget. “It’s awesome,” Maatta said. “It feels awesome to get that out of the way. It’s something really big I’ve always dreamed of, putting up points in the NHL.” Jokinen was thrilled for Maatta that night, saying, “He's so good, so mature for being a 19-year-old. He's been fun to watch." Whether or not Maatta remains on the roster after his ninegame window or is sent back to his junior team for the rest of the season remains to be seen. Regardless, his fellow countryman has been impressed with what he has seen thus far. “He has been great,” Jokinen said. “And I think he is only going to get better every day.” 220
