AYE, AYE CAPTAIN
Andrew Ladd
The Atlanta Thrashers filled their captaincy void on Nov. 18 when they tabbed forward Andrew Ladd to serve the vacant role. Ladd, who helped the Chicago Blackhawks capture the 2010 Stanley Cup championship, was acquired by the Thrashers over the summer. Ladd, 24, led the Thrashers in scoring as of Nov. 21 with 19 points (7G-12A). He fills the opening that has existed since Ilya Kovalchuk was traded to the New Jersey Devils last February. Dustin Byfuglien and Tobias Enstrom will serve as alternate captains.
INTERNATIONAL FLARE

Swedish-born Marcus Vinnerborg became the first European-trained referee to work in the National Hockey League when he officiated a game between Dallas and Anaheim at the American Airlines Center on Nov. 16. Vinnerborg, 38, came to the NHL with plenty of international experience. In addition to officiating Swedish Elite League contests, he also worked the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Marcus Vinnerborg Vancouver and several World Championships. Upon coming to North America in September, Vinnerborg worked 10 American Hockey League games to prepare himself for the NHL level. “Of course, you’re the pioneer when you’re the first one to do something,” Vinnerborg told NHL.com. “To be honest, I don’t look at it too much like that. I came here to learn from the best officials in the world and to adapt to their way of working, and to work in the best league in the world.”
LOCAL TALENT TOPS PRELIMINARY DRAFT RANKINGS NHL Central Scouting released its 2011 NHL Entry Draft preliminary rankings for the top levels of North American junior hockey on Nov. 16. Pittsburgh was well represented, as four players with local ties made the list. Saginaw Spirit (Ontario Hockey League) forward Brandon Saad (Gibsonia, Pa.) was ranked second among OHL prospects, while teammate Vince Trocheck (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was fifth. Among United States Hockey League (USHL) players, U.S. National Team Development Program goaltender John Gibson (Whitehall, Pa.) was the league’s top-ranked netminder, while center J.T. Miller (Moon, Pa.) was the second-rated skater. 8

RON BURKLE Ron Burkle has now added a new arena — Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center — to his tremendous list of accomplishments in the business world. Burkle, widely recognized as one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 12th season as co-owner of the Penguins. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his role in negotiations for the new arena deal. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League and the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy. He has received numerous awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year and the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year award.
MARIO LEMIEUX Mario Lemieux will always be remembered for the magic he created on the ice, but one of the crowning achievements of his remarkable business career came this season — the opening of CONSOL Energy Center, home of the Penguins and Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue. Even before the reality of CONSOL Energy Center, Lemieux and coowner Ron Burkle had turned the Penguins into a premier NHL franchise. The Penguins have been named No. 1 in Fan Relations by ESPN the Magazine, sold out a team-record 166 straight games, sold out every suite for three straight seasons and established records for local television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits. Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVPs trophies and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP, in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $8 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario, his wife Nathalie and their four children live in Sewickley. For extended bios please visit pittsburghpenguins.com 10
DAVID MOREHOUSE Pittsburgh native David Morehouse was named CEO of the Penguins in September and leads the team into an exciting new era at CONSOL Energy Center. Morehouse had served as team president since 2007, overseeing ticket sales, marketing, corporate sales, communications and brand development, as well as representing the team in corporate relations and governmental affairs. Under his leadership the Penguins have become one of the top organizations in professional sports — ranked No. 1 in Fan Relations and No. 5 overall as a franchise among 122 pro teams in North America by ESPN The Magazine. As team president, Morehouse implemented a brand strategy that featured a new commitment to marketing, fan interaction and community outreach, as well as a targeted focus on the team’s young fan demographic. Morehouse grew up in the Beechview section on Pittsburgh. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University, and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Vanessa, have three children and live in Bell Acres. For extended bios please visit pittsburghpenguins.com

RAY SHERO Ray Shero, 48, was named GM of the Pittsburgh Penguins on May 25, 2006. His fresh ideas and calm but firm management style helped transform the Penguins from a team that did not qualify for the playoffs in 2005-06 to one that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2007-08 and won the Cup in 2008-09. One of his first acts as GM was to declare a goal of building a team that could compete for championships on a yearly basis. He revamped the team’s hockey operations staff and structure, upgraded professional and amateur scouting, added a team operations director and opened new lines of communication with the business side of the organization. Ray built his hockey sense and managerial style during 14 seasons as an NHL assistant general manager — six with the Ottawa Senators and eight with the Nashville Predators. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University and was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1982. He spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. The native of St. Paul, Minn. is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.
JASON BOTTERILL Jason Botterill enters his second full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position on May 22, 2009 by general manager Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockeyrelated matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top-minor league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 34, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins. DAN BYLSMA In just one-plus seasons behind the bench, Dan Bylsma has already become one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history. After being promoted to Penguins head coach in February 2009, Bylsma, 40, directed the team to its third Stanley Cup in franchise history — a feat previously accomplished by legendary coaches “Badger” Bob Johnson and Scott Bowman. In the process Bylsma became the 14th rookie head coach, and just the fourth in the past 50 years, to capture the Stanley Cup. Of those 14, only Montreal’s Al MacNeil (1970-71) took over mid-season. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons as a right winger with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-2004. He played 429 NHL regular-season games, recording 19 goals and 62 points, and also played in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final with Anaheim. Bylsma was an assistant coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for two seasons from 2006-08 and was named head coach at the start of the 2008-09 season. He went 35-16-1-2 in 54 games with WB/S before being promoted to Pittsburgh. He played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son and reside in the North Hills.
TONY GRANATO Tony Granato, 46, begins his second season on the Penguins’ coaching staff. Granato, among his many responsibilities, works with the Penguins’ forwards and penalty killing units. He oversaw the NHL’s ninth-ranked penalty killing group with an 84.1-percent success rate, and second best on the road at 85.3 percent. Prior to joining the Penguins, Granato spent six seasons behind the bench for the Colorado Avalanche and served two stints as Avalanche head coach from 2002-04 and 2008-09. Granato compiled a 215-104-17-16 record and led Colorado to a Northwest Division title in 2003. Granato played 13 seasons in the NHL with the NY Rangers, Los Angeles and San Jose. In 1997, he was the recipient of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for overcoming a near career-ending brain injury. In 773 career games, the feisty forward posted 248 goals, 492 points and 1,425 penalty minutes. He appeared in 79 career postseason games and helped lead Los Angeles to a Stanley Cup Final berth in 1993. Granato played four years at the University of Wisconsin and was inducted into the Badgers’ Hall of Fame in 2000. Granato also played for the U.S. National team in 1987-88 and represented his country in the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary. Tony and his wife, Linda, are the parents of four children and reside in the South Hills. For extended bios please visit pittsburghpenguins.com 16

TODD REIRDEN Todd Reirden, 39, joined Pittsburgh’s coaching staff on July 31, 2010 after coaching with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins the previous two seasons. Reirden, an NHL defenseman for parts of five seasons, works closely with the team’s defensemen. Reirden, completed his first full season as WB/S head coach in 200910, leading a young and inexperienced team to an impressive 41-34-2-3 record, finishing third in the East Division, and a berth in the Calder Cup playoffs. Prior to joining the Penguins organization, Reirden spent one season as an assistant coach with the Bowling Green Falcons (CCHA) — his alma mater. He was a teammate of Bylsma’s during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons at Bowling Green. Selected by New Jersey in the 12th round (242nd overall) of the 1990 NHL Enrty Draft, Reirden played professionally for 13 seasons, retiring after the 2006-07 campaign with Graz EC of the Austrian Hockey League. He appeared in 183 NHL games with Edmonton, St. Louis, Atlanta and Phoenix, recording 46 points (11+35) and 181 penalty minutes. Todd and his wife, Shelby, have one son.
GILLES MELOCHE Former NHL goaltender Gilles Meloche is in his fifth season as the Penguins’ full-time goaltending coach and 25th with the organization. Meloche has been instrumental in developing Marc-Andre Fleury into a Stanley Cup-winning netminder. Meloche served as a Penguins scout from 1989-2006 and also doubled as a goaltending coach/consultant during much of that time. He was also part of the staff when the Penguins won Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992. A native of Montreal, Quebec, Meloche spent 18 seasons as an NHL goaltender with Chicago, California, Cleveland, Minnesota and Pittsburgh. He played the final three seasons of his career in Pittsburgh following a 1985 trade. Meloche appeared in 788 NHL games during his career, posting a record of 270-351-131 with a 3.64 goals-against average. In 45 career playoff games, he posted a 21-19 record and a 3.48 goals-against average. Gilles and his wife, Sophie, reside in Pittsburgh. His son, Eric, is a pro player who was a member of the Penguins organization from 2000-04.

OUR NEW HOME CONSOL Energy Center opened in August, 2010 as Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue — home of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins as well as other professional and collegiate sports, concerts, children’s shows, skating shows and more. It replaces the old Civic Arena/ Mellon Arena, which had operated since 1961 and was home of the Penguins from their inception in CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for 1967. It was the oldest arena in the the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins. National Hockey League. “CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins,” said David Morehouse, CEO of the hockey team. “With open concourses, comfortable seating, cutting-edge technology, a state-of-the-art scoreboard and sound system, and an extensive array of food and beverage options, it is a spectacular symbol for the Pittsburgh of the 21st century.” CONSOL Energy Center was completed on time and under budget, thanks to the combined efforts of architectural firms Populous and Astorino; the owner’s representative, ICON; the construction company, PJ Dick/Hunt; and the excellent construction workers and skilled trade workers of Western Pennsylvania. The new arena seats 18,087 for hockey, 19,000 for basketball and almost 20,000 for concerts. It is a green building and is the first NHL arena to attain LEED Gold certification. Even before its doors had opened, CONSOL Energy Center landed commitments from shows that would have bypassed the old arena — the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament first and second rounds, the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four, and back-to-back concerts by music legend Paul McCartney. McCartney, who first played Pittsburgh with the Beatles in 1964 but hadn’t performed here since 1990, christened the new arena with a grand opening concert on August 18, 2010. In its first season of operation, CONSOL Energy Center also will be home to the Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League — bringing indoor football back to the city for the first time in almost 20 years. A funding plan for the new arena project was completed in March, 2007, thanks to the combined efforts of Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, among others. The Sports & Exhibition Authority owns the building on behalf of the city and county, and the Penguins have the lease. The new arena is managed by SMG, with Jay Roberts serving as general manager.

COMMUNITY UPDATE
OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD The Penguins players aren’t the only ones that donate time and energy to charities. Their wives and girlfriends also frequently do their part to make a difference. Before Pittsburgh’s Nov. 10 game against Boston, all of the wives and girlfriends who were present gathered near the CONSOL Energy Center family lounge and packed shoe boxes full of toys and necessities to send to some of the poorest children in the world for Christmas. “This is pretty much the only gift that these kids have ever received,” said Christi Rupp, the wife of Penguins forward Mike Rupp. Rupp arranged the event—which benefits Operation Christmas Child. Last year, the event’s organizers, Samaritan’s First, sent 8 million shoe boxes to 138 different countries. “It’s sent to the poorest children, whether it’s due to war or natural disasters like the earthquake in Haiti,” Christi said. “They’re trying to send 250,000 shoe boxes just to Haitian children affected by the earthquake.” The wives and girlfriends went out and purchased bags and bags full of small toys, school supplies and basic necessities such as socks, toothbrushes and toothpaste. Then, prior to the game, they got together and put them all in shoe boxes and covered them in Christmas wrapping paper. This marked the first time that the Penguins’ wives and girlfriends donated shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child, but Christi participated in the event several times before. “I’ve done it with other teams before,” Christi said. “When Mike played in New Jersey, some of the girls got together and did it there. I started it with my children, and I brought it up to the girls [in Pittsburgh] and they wanted to do it.” Erin Lilly, Brooks Orpik’s girlfriend, said she loved the idea. “It’s fun when people show up and do the hard work, and it’s a great result in the end,” Lilly said. “I think there’s a good group of girls here who all like participating in any event presented. No one has ever said no. “We’re just trying to make Christmas a little bit better for kids who don’t usually get presents.”

TONIGHT’S COMPETITORS ARE:
ROUND ONE HEAT SEVEN: WESTMORELAND EAGLES SQUIRT A MAJOR VS. MORGANTOWN BLADES SQUIRT 1 The one-on-one competition features Lane Ruffner/Gage Handwork from Westmoreland against Sam Snider/Brayden Wilson from Morgantown. You can also view this and previously shown competitions at pittsburghpenguins.com.
On Sunday, October 10, sixteen youth hockey teams from the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) in the Squirt age group (age 9 - 10) participated in a shootout competition at CONSOL Energy Center. The event was videotaped to be shown in episodes at Penguins home games. The first round of competition featured heats between two teams striving to advance to the next round. Sixteen teams fielded five skaters shooting against the opposing team’s goalie. After each team competition, an individual shooter and goaltender squared off against the opposing team’s individual tandem for a one-on-one competition. Each winning team and pair of individuals advanced to the next round of eight teams/tandems. The format repeated as teams and individual pairs advanced through the quarter-final heats to move on to the semi-finals. Robust competition marked the semi-final round for teams and individual tandems. The remaining two teams and individual tandems then had to “leave it all on the ice” in vying for the championship. Early in the second intermission of each Penguins home game the various heats in the competition will be featured. Enjoy each episode.

THE OLD COLLEGE TRY Craig Adams knows that Ben Lovejoy went to Dartmouth. Lovejoy knows that Adams went to Harvard. And fellow former collegian Brooks Orpik knows that both were Ivy Leaguers. Not that he gives them much credit. “They think that they’re smarter than they are just because they went to an Ivy League school,” joked Orpik, who played at Boston College. “I know plenty of guys who played hockey at Harvard who don’t exactly fit the bill of Harvard-educated.” “It’s about the lowest form of humor if I do something stupid,” Adams rebutted. “Everyone will say, ‘Wait, you went to Harvard.’ It gets pretty old. I’ve probably heard it a million times. Maybe David Silverman
guys need to realize that it’s not that original.” But it is fun. Adams and Lovejoy might take extra heat for being Ivy Leaguers, but they are just two of many faces in the Penguins locker room who played college

hockey before entering the professional ranks. And most of them keep up with their alma maters. Head coach Dan Bylsma, who played at Bowling Green State, even knew how many losses his Falcons had this season when given a pop quiz. He also knew that new Steelers place-kicker Shaun Suisham is a Bowling Green alumnus. Some other current Penguins who played college hockey include Chris Kunitz (Ferris State), Mark Letestu (Western Michigan), Mike Comrie (Michigan), Chris Conner (Michigan Tech) and Alex Goligoski and Paul Martin (both Minnesota). continued on page 47

Andrew Hutchinson, who saw time with the Penguins earlier this season, played at Michigan State. Don’t forget about assistant coach Tony Granato (Wisconsin) either, not to mention fellow assistant coach Todd Reirden, who played alongside Bylsma at Bowling Green. General manager Ray Shero played at St. Lawrence. Jason Botterill, assistant general manager, had a distinguished career at Michigan. Tom Fitzgerald, assistant to the general manager, played at Providence. The players and staff keep plenty of memories from those teams and, occasionally, claim bragging rights. “We won an Ivy League championship,” Lovejoy said, “which, obviously, Craig downplayed. But it was a pretty big deal. We won an ECAC championship too, but we lost the [conference] tournament. “That [Ivy League title] was a huge deal, not so much in the hockey community, but the alumni — the random businessman who graduated in 1975. . . it’s a huge deal for that. A lot of guys are pretty removed from their college experience. I’m four years out, so there are a little bragging rights [to go around], but more only if my team was playing Craig’s team. “My youngest brother [Nick Lovejoy] is a freshman at Dartmouth, so I’ve been more into it this year than I have in the past. But I definitely follow more if Dartmouth is doing well.” “We talk about it,” Orpik said. “Last season, BC [Boston Courtesy of Boston College
College] and Wisconsin played in the [NCAA] final, so I had a little thing going with Tony Granato. It’s more bragging rights than anything. “When Ryan Whitney [played for the

Penguins], he went to BU [Boston University], so that was a little more competitive. The Beanpot tournament, historically, has been a lot of BC-BU matchups in the final.” The Beanpot is an annual college tournament featuring four Boston-area teams — BU, BC, Harvard and Northeastern. “Craig went to Harvard, so he never went to the final,” Orpik said. “We did play in one final [in 1998],” Adams countered. “We lost in overtime to BU, so I don’t know where BC was. I guess they weren’t in the final that year.” Though Boston has always been rich in college hockey history, Pittsburgh’s college hockey scene has picked way up over the past few years with local Robert Morris University entering the NCAA Division I ranks in 2004. Now, in the program’s seventh season, the Colonials are nationally ranked for the first time, reaching No. 18 in Inside College Hockey’s November 14 power rankings and No. 20 in U.S. College Hockey Online’s November 15 poll. “In this town, it might be hard to follow [Robert Morris] hockey,” Orpik said, “but I think that some of the local media could do a better job of drawing some more spotlight to them. “I follow them a little bit. Having the Frozen Four [NCAA semifinals and final] here in 2013 is going to be huge for them.” Robert Morris will host the Frozen Four at Courtesy of Boston College
CONSOL Energy Center that year. “If I have the opportunity to go to the games, I would definitely go,” Orpik said. And who knows? Maybe BC will have to face Robert Morris.

I feel
.
Ask a grieving child how they’re feeling and you may get a lot of answers. Or none at all. For many, finding the words to express their feelings can be difficult. But while finding the right words may not be easy, finding the right place to turn to for help can be. At the Caring Place, we’re here when grieving children need someone to listen, to talk, or to just sit and be. For more information about one of our peer support groups or to volunteer, call us today.

THE PENGUINS GAME VAULT NOVEMBER 22, 2007 • PENGUINS 6, SENATORS 5 Following a breakout season the year before, the Pittsburgh Penguins were expected to rank among the National Hockey League’s top teams during the 2007-08 season. However, the Penguins limped into their Thanksgiving night matchup with the Ottawa Senators on Nov. 22, 2007 three games under the .500 mark at 8-11-2. In the midst of a 0-5-1 slide, and less than 24 hours after a 2-1 home loss to the divisionrival New Jersey Devils, the Penguins were staring at a Thanksgiving night matchup with the Ottawa Senators, who had eliminated Pittsburgh from the postseason in five games just seven months prior. The Penguins’ chances of ending their winless streak appeared dubious when goals by Ottawa’s Jason Spezza and Chris Phillips staked the Senators to a 2-0 lead midway through the first period, chasing Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury from the net in favor of Dany Sabourin. What happened next for the Penguins arguably saved their season. Evgeni Malkin and Ryan Malone scored 18 seconds apart late in the opening period to draw the Penguins even. Tyler Kennedy then gave Pittsburgh the 3-2 lead by beating Martin Gerber with a wrist shot eight minutes into the second period. Following Kennedy’s tally, it was Ottawa’s turn to respond, and they did so in a big way. Spezza’s second goal of the game and a power-play marker by Dany Heatley put the Senators back in front, 4-3, heading into the second intermission. Defenseman Christoph Schubert gave Ottawa some insurance when he upped that lead to 5-3 by scoring just 1:04 into the final period. Faced with their second two-goal deficit Jarkko Ruutu froze goaltender Martin Gerber right before he slid a shot between Gerber’s legs to of the evening, the Penguins rallied once clinch a dramatic 6-5 shootout victory on Nov. 22. again with another quick-strike attack. Malone buried his second goal of the night with a snap shot on the power play at the 5:56 mark to get the Penguins within one, 5-4. Defenseman Sergei Gonchar then evened the score 1:11 later by skating in deep to the bottom of the near circle and one-timing a Colby Armstrong pass behind Gerber to tie the game, 5-5. The contest quickly shifted to a shootout, where Gerber and Sabourin each held down the fort after both allowed the first shooter to score. With the shootout deadlocked at 1-1, Penguins head coach Michel Therrien sent an unlikely hero — Jarkko Ruutu — onto the ice.

Ruutu skated down the middle of the zone slowly towards Gerber. He picked his right leg in the air and made a move to his forehand, which froze Gerber. Ruutu then turned the puck over to his backhand and slid a shot between Gerber’s legs to clinch a dramatic 6-5 comefrom-behind victory. 79

PENS PROFILE BROOKS ORPIK
When it was suggested he serves as the conscience of the Penguins, defenseman Brooks Orpik smiled sheepishly. “I’m not going to give myself that much credit,” said Orpik. “We have a really good group. At times, you’ve got to pick your spots and things need to be said. No one takes it personally. Everyone’s trying to motivate each other.” Only seconds before, Orpik noted that the Penguins’ 3-1 win over Vancouver at CONSOL Energy Center that night (November 17) was marred only by a turnover that led to the Canucks’ lone goal just 34 seconds after the Penguins made the score 3-0. “The first shift after a goal, you’ve got to be thinking, ‘Don’t give up anything.’ Get out there and make them go 200 feet to get chances,” said the 6-foot-2, 228-pounder. “Don’t give them any chances by being too aggressive. Pick your spots. Don’t sit back and just try to protect the lead, but play a little smarter.” If that’s not the Penguins’ conscience talking, Orpik does a good impersonation. If Orpik isn’t the Penguins’ conscience, perhaps he’s their godfather. He’s in his seventh full season with the team, With 59 hits, Brooks Orpik was ranked ninth in the NHL after 14 games.
making him tops in tenure. Orpik, 30, enjoyed a tremendous game against
Vancouver. Matched against the Canucks’ top line, Orpik played dynamic twins Henrik and Daniel Sedin to a standstill, delivering six hits, blocking five shots and finishing plus-1. Orpik was also part of a brilliant Penguins’ PK that held Vancouver’s high-octane power play off the scoreboard despite five attempts. continued on page 99

Without getting in the way of Marc-Andre Fleury, Brooks Orpik had five blocked shots against Vancouver.
After 14 games, Orpik had a goal and two assists and was plus-2. His 59 hits ranked him ninth in the NHL. Orpik landed 255 hits to finish sixth in the league last season. He’s come a long way since minus-36 as a rookie. Referring to his five blocks vs. Vancouver, Orpik said, “There were a lot of PKs. That gives you a lot more opportunities to block shots. You never want to get in [goalie MarcAndre Fleury’s] way, so you’ve got to be 100 percent you’re going to block it.” As for the penalty killing, Orpik said, “Everyone was reading off each other. We got a PK goal, and [Sidney Crosby’s] goal might as well have been a PK goal — two minutes of work on the PK, then he got that goal coming right out of the box.” Indeed, the Penguins’ first tally vs. Vancouver came at 16:43 of the first period when Crosby, who had just served a minor, burst out of the penalty box to net a breakaway. Orpik had lots of different defensive partners when the Penguins beat Vancouver, and he saw a lot of the Sedins. Henrik was the NHL’s MVP and top scorer last season; he and twin brother Daniel have long been telepathically effective as linemates. “It’s a big challenge against those guys, and they have a lot of other guys they can stick with the twins to complement them,” Orpik said. “Those guys are really good once they continued on page 103

get in your zone and start cycling. I thought we did a really good job of being physical and taking their time and space away.” Orpik and his teammates did their best to smother the Sedins all night, but each got an assist on the Canucks’ only goal, a short tap-in by Dan Hamhuis. “You can’t give [the Sedins] anything,” Orpik said. “They’re so creative together. You can’t let your guard down. It definitely keeps your focus.” The win over Vancouver was the Penguins’ third in four games. Orpik felt the Penguins were playing better with leads, and that Fleury was playing better, period, after a frustrating early-season slump. “That’s important,” Orpik said. “When [Fleury] plays with a lot of confidence, everyone in front of him plays with a lot of confidence. When he doesn’t play with a lot of confidence, everyone in front of him seems to be a little hesitant, too. He’s rebounded really well these last four games.” When Orpik says it, it’s true. That’s what a conscience does. “He’s not afraid to tell the guys when he thinks we’re playing bad,” said defenseman Alex Goligoski. “It goes the other way, too.
Orpik and his teammates did their best to eliminate opportunities for the Sedins, limiting both of them to an assist on Vancouver’s lone goal.
He’s encouraging when we’re doing the right things.” Added Fleury, “I can talk to him about anything, and I always know I’ll get a straight answer.”

NORTH ALLEGHENY OVERPOWERS ON OFFENSE; HOLDS BALDWIN WINLESS In a game that started out close, North Allegheny (3-1-1) put together three full periods of hockey to beat Baldwin (0-5), 5-2, on Nov. 16 at the Bladerunners in Warrendale. As soon as the puck dropped to begin the first period, North Allegheny came out firing. Joseph Griffin, led the charge firing shot after shot at Baldwin Goalie Mike Cundra who turned away every shot Griffin threw his way. However, with 10:20 remaining in the first period, Cundra finally missed a shot from Jacob Hubert, who notched his first goal of the season. Josh King and Matt Neurohr had the assists. On the heels of their defensive stand at the end of the opening frame, Baldwin came out strong, determined to break through NA’s defense. After making a nice move through the neutral zone, Baldwin senior forward, Neil Isler led a two-on-two opportunity and took the shot, sneaking it past NA goaltender Matt Goda 15 seconds into the second period to make it 1-1. Just as Baldwin had finished celebrating, Cody Black of NA answered back just 18 seconds later once again giving NA the lead. With 2:41 remaining in the second period, Baldwin capitalized on the power play. Jesse Powell put a rebound behind Goda to tie the score at 2-2. As the final seconds in the second period wound down, NA’s Eric Barger passed to NA leading scorer Ryan Worsena, who put a shot into an open net, giving NA the lead, 3-2, with only six seconds remaining. North Allegheny’s Worsena added a second goal off of a pass from linemate Matt Fantaski to make it 4-2. In an attempt to regroup, Baldwin called a timeout after NA’s fourth goal, however, NA’s attack proved to be too much as Connor Cash netted the fifth and final goal for NA giving them a lead of 5-2 with 6:26 remaining. As the final buzzer sounded the 5-2 score held and NA notched their third win of the season. “I think the energy level was there for three periods,” NA head coach Jim Black said. “I think we skated a lot better than we did in the games before. “I thought they really executed the things we worked on in practice. I’m very happy overall with their effort.”

A LESSON LEARNED Mid-November presented the Penguins with two games played seven days apart that featured the exact same scenario but in the end very different results. For the Penguins, it was a lesson learned if not a lesson reinforced. On Nov. 10 against Boston the Penguins led 4-2 after 40 minutes then watched in horror as the Bruins erupted for five goals, the last of which was scored into an empty net, and won, 7-4. On Nov. 17 against Vancouver the Penguins led 3-1 after two periods of play then locked the game down in what became a scoreless third. “We’ve been working on that,” forward Max Talbot said. “We’ve been working on trying to protect a lead. That’s part of our identity.” Among other things, these Penguins aspire to be a third-period team. “Down a goal or two we got to get it,” Talbot said. “Up a couple of goals we’re trying to protect a lead. We saw in the previous year, the core of this team has been doing it over and over again. And now it’s getting consistent with this team, too. “It’s nice to see.” In 2009-10 the Penguins went 28-3-2 in games they had led after two periods, and 8-23-2 in games they had trailed after 40 minutes. Through 20 games this season the Penguins were 6-1-0 when leading after two and had yet to produce their first third-period comeback victory (0-5-1 when trailing after two). That Nov. 10 Boston game had been the lone blemish on their closing-out-games resume and, the Penguins hoped, an aberration. “Just the approach was different,” defenseman Brooks Orpik said, contrasting the thirdperiod performances against Boston and Vancouver. “Your approach going into it has to be not giving up any quality chances, and if they’re going to get chances Marc-Andre Fleury was solid as a rock in net against the Vancouver Canucks, stopping 29 of 30 shots on net.

“If you looked at the Boston game we were pressing a little bit, just over aggressive and taking chances we didn’t need to. [Against Vancouver] it was ‘stay patient.’ They’re the ones that are down by two goals. Eventually they’re going to have to come out of what they’re doing and take chances and take opportunities to try to generate offense. “I thought we were really patient and stuck to the game plan.” It helped that goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury was rock solid in net against the Canucks. “It all starts in net and ‘Flower’ played great for us again,” Orpik said. Just as integral an aspect of protecting a third-period lead, Orpik said, is an individual and collective understanding of and response to the situation. Like most other aspects of a team’s game, that can take some time to recognize and refine. “Every year you have new guys and it’s a new group,” Orpik said. “That being said, we have a strong core of guys that have been here for a few years here. To me, it’s your mindset going into it. If you’re down by two goals you have to be a little more aggressive and take chances. If you’re up two goals, you never want to sit back and play
Max Talbot looks at the win over Vancouver as a confidence boost after the game against Boston the week before.
conservatively but you gotta play smart. “There are times to jump up in the play and there are times to stay back and defend.” That should work most of the time if not all of the time. “The league is so good now,” Orpik said. “There are no easy games on the schedule any more. There’s so much parity now. As much as you try to lock it down, you’re going to take penalties. There are a lot of good players in this league. And as many times as we come back in the third period, there are a lot of other teams trying to do the same thing. “You can live with it when they’re making unbelievable plays to beat you. It’s not you giving them unneeded opportunities and then they’re burning you on that. That’s what really kills you and that’s the Boston game, that’s what it was.” Talbot is holding the Penguins to an even higher standard. “A good team like us should be able to do it every time,” he said of finishing off games when there’s a third-period lead to be protected. “It’s going to happen, like the game against the Bruins. It’s going to happen, but we’re working on it and [the Canucks] game is a great confidence thing that, ‘OK, we can do it.’” Mike Prisuta is the sports director for WDVE-FM and the sports anchor for “Jim, Randy & the DVE Morning Show.”

At the beginning of training camp, Kris Letang set some modest goals for himself. “I just want to improve my game overall and play with confidence and bring the game that I was able to bring in the playoffs,” Letang said in September. Now, just two weeks into November, Letang has not only achieved that goal, but he is also at the top of the standings among National Hockey League defenseman. Letang’s 17 points (3G-14A) through the first 19 games was equaled only by Detroit’s Nicklas Lidstrom. Considering the fact that Lidstrom is a six-time Norris Trophy winner, Letang is in pretty good company. Though he expected to improve this season, Letang never thought he would see his name at the top of Kris Letang’s 17 points (3+4) through the first 19 games the defensive scoring list. has put him near the top of the list for defensive scoring. “It just came like that,” Letang said. “I didn’t really expect it to happen. I was just playing my way, and I’m getting the bounces.” He said he worked on his game over the summer, but he didn’t try to do too much differently. “I’m just shooting the puck more and obviously trying to rush more,” Letang said. “And I’m supporting the attack with a good first pass.” Letang may be at the top of the standings, but the entire Penguins blue line is participating in the scoring party. Pittsburgh has 47 (10G-37A) points from its defenseman through 19 games. “[The defense] is different than the previous year,” Letang said. “I think we have five guys who can move the puck really well. I think, obviously, we look like more of a defensive squad that wants to attack and wants to put pressure on them.” With all of that scoring and offense, it could be easy for a defenseman to forget about continued on page 140

continued from page 139
his defensive duties. But with Letang and the Penguins, that’s not the case. “I think playing a good D-zone coverage and playing well in my defensive zone is going to help me to get points in the offensive zone,” Letang said. “I’m going to get out quicker and transition quicker. I think that’s the key.” The system that Dan Bylsma has in place is one that encourages the defense to step up and contribute more to the offense. And it’s certainly working. “It’s part of the attack,” Bylsma said. “It’s a time and space read, but we want our defensemen to have the mentality that they’re going to join [the rush]. As soon as the puck is transitioned, they need to have that first-step mentality to get into the play.” Letang implemented that mentality, and it is helping the Penguins light the lamp. “We have really good skaters,” Letang said. “Any time we have a chance to join and create chances we have to do it. They can come back. They’re in good shape even if we go on the rush.” “We’ve done a good job of coming out of our own zone,” Alex Goligoski said. “That has allowed us to get up on the play a lot. When we’re able to do that — get out of our zone quickly and make plays on the rush — it’s easy for us to get up ice and contribute offensively.” Thanks to the Penguins’ new defensive mentality, by the end of the season, we might see more than just Letang’s name near the top of the list for defensive scoring.
