The Anaheim Ducks rewarded head coach Randy Carlyle for a 16-13-4 start to the 2010-11 season by giving him a one-year contract extension on Dec. 14. Carlyle, who has the Ducks sitting in second place in the Pacific Division, two points behind first-place Dallas, led Anaheim to a Stanley Cup championship in 2007. Under Carlyle’s tutelage the Ducks have won 34 postseason games, third-most since the lockout behind Randy Carlyle Detroit (48) and the Penguins (38). “Randy has done a terrific job for us over the last six seasons,” Ducks Executive Vice President/General Manager Bob Murray said. “His record speaks for itself and we are pleased to have him leading our club going forward.”

QUITE THE DEBUT Edmonton Oilers rookie forward Linus Omark made quite the debut when he starred during the Oilers’ 4-3 shootout victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Dec. 10. The 5-foot-9 Swede recorded his first NHL point — an assist — in regulation, then scored a spectacular shootoutclinching goal to cap his evening. In the shootout, Omark, 23, picked up the puck at center Linus Omark ice and promptly did a 360 spin as he skated over the blue line. When he got between the circles, Omark faked a slap shot to get Lightning netminder Dan Ellis out of position, before tossing the rubber between his legs for the game-winner. Omark joins fellow freshmen Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle and Magnus Paajarvi in what is shaping up to be one of the best collections of rookies on one team in recent memory.
While we all wait with great anticipation for the Penguins and Washington Capitals to do battle in the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic at Heinz Field on New Year’s Day, the NCAA played a little outdoor hockey of their own on Dec. 11 when the University of Michigan played host to its archrival, Michigan State University, at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Mich. A world-hockey record crowd of 113,411 packed Michigan Stadium the ‘Big House’ to watch the Wolverines pound the Spartans, 5-0, in a contest billed as the “Big Chill in the Big House.” “It was a big risk when they undertook this,” Michigan head coach Red Berenson said. “You never knew if fans would support it, what the weather would be like or what the game would be like. But everything turned out all right and couldn’t be better.”

RON BURKLE Ron Burkle has now added a new arena — Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center — to his tremendous list of accomplishments in the business world. Burkle, widely recognized as one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 12th season as co-owner of the Penguins. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his role in negotiations for the new arena deal. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League and the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy. He has received numerous awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year and the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year award.
MARIO LEMIEUX Mario Lemieux will always be remembered for the magic he created on the ice, but one of the crowning achievements of his remarkable business career came this season — the opening of CONSOL Energy Center, home of the Penguins and Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue. Even before the reality of CONSOL Energy Center, Lemieux and coowner Ron Burkle had turned the Penguins into a premier NHL franchise. The Penguins have been named No. 1 in Fan Relations by ESPN the Magazine, sold out a team-record 166 straight games, sold out every suite for three straight seasons and established records for local television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits. Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVPs trophies and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP, in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $8 million for charity. DAVID MOREHOUSE Pittsburgh native David Morehouse was named CEO of the Penguins in September and leads the team into an exciting new era at CONSOL Energy Center. Morehouse had served as team president since 2007, overseeing ticket sales, marketing, corporate sales, communications and brand development, as well as representing the team in corporate relations and governmental affairs. Under his leadership the Penguins have become one of the top organizations in professional sports — ranked No. 1 in Fan Relations and No. 5 overall as a franchise among 122 pro teams in North America by ESPN The Magazine. As team president, Morehouse implemented a brand strategy that featured a new commitment to marketing, fan interaction and community outreach, as well as a targeted focus on the team’s young fan demographic. Morehouse grew up in the Beechview section on Pittsburgh. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University, and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. RAY SHERO Ray Shero, 48, was named GM of the Pittsburgh Penguins on May 25, 2006. His fresh ideas and calm but firm management style helped transform the Penguins from a team that did not qualify for the playoffs in 2005-06 to one that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2007-08 and won the Cup in 2008-09. One of his first acts as GM was to declare a goal of building a team that could compete for championships on a yearly basis. He revamped the team’s hockey operations staff and structure, upgraded professional and amateur scouting, added a team operations director and opened new lines of communication with the business side of the organization. Ray built his hockey sense and managerial style during 14 seasons as an NHL assistant general manager — six with the Ottawa Senators and eight with the Nashville Predators. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University and was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1982. He spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. The native of St. Paul, Minn. is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.
JASON BOTTERILL Jason Botterill enters his second full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position on May 22, 2009 by general manager Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockeyrelated matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top-minor league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 34, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins. Before joining Pittsburgh, Botterill worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was a first-round draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in 1994 and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four seasons at the University of Michigan, where he earned his MBA, and helped lead the Wolverines to the NCAA title in 1996. He also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in 1994, 1995 and 1996, helping his team win gold medals in all three tournaments. DAN BYLSMA In just one-plus seasons behind the bench, Dan Bylsma has already become one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history. After being promoted to Penguins head coach in February 2009, Bylsma, 40, directed the team to its third Stanley Cup in franchise history — a feat previously accomplished by legendary coaches “Badger” Bob Johnson and Scott Bowman. In the process Bylsma became the 14th rookie head coach, and just the fourth in the past 50 years, to capture the Stanley Cup. Of those 14, only Montreal’s Al MacNeil (1970-71) took over mid-season. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons as a right winger with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-2004. He played 429 NHL regular-season games, recording 19 goals and 62 points, and also played in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final with Anaheim. Bylsma was an assistant coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for two seasons from 2006-08 and was named head coach at the start of the 2008-09 season. He went 35-16-1-2 in 54 games with WB/S before being promoted to Pittsburgh. He played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son and reside in the North Hills.
TONY GRANATO Tony Granato, 46, begins his second season on the Penguins’ coaching staff. Granato, among his many responsibilities, works with the Penguins’ forwards and penalty killing units. He oversaw the NHL’s ninth-ranked penalty killing group with an 84.1-percent success rate, and second best on the road at 85.3 percent. Prior to joining the Penguins, Granato spent six seasons behind the bench for the Colorado Avalanche and served two stints as Avalanche head coach from 2002-04 and 2008-09. Granato compiled a 215-104-17-16 record and led Colorado to a Northwest Division title in 2003. Granato played 13 seasons in the NHL with the NY Rangers, Los Angeles and San Jose. In 1997, he was the recipient of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for overcoming a near career-ending brain injury. In 773 career games, the feisty forward posted 248 goals, 492 points and 1,425 penalty minutes. He appeared in 79 career postseason games and helped lead Los Angeles to a Stanley Cup Final berth in 1993. Granato played four years at the University of Wisconsin and was inducted into the Badgers’ Hall of Fame in 2000. Granato also played for the U.S. National team in 1987-88 and represented his country in the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary. TODD REIRDEN Todd Reirden, 39, joined Pittsburgh’s coaching staff on July 31, 2010 after coaching with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins the previous two seasons. Reirden, an NHL defenseman for parts of five seasons, works closely with the team’s defensemen. Reirden, completed his first full season as WB/S head coach in 200910, leading a young and inexperienced team to an impressive 41-34-2-3 record, finishing third in the East Division, and a berth in the Calder Cup playoffs. Prior to joining the Penguins organization, Reirden spent one season as an assistant coach with the Bowling Green Falcons (CCHA) — his alma mater. He was a teammate of Bylsma’s during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons at Bowling Green. Selected by New Jersey in the 12th round (242nd overall) of the 1990 NHL Enrty Draft, Reirden played professionally for 13 seasons, retiring after the 2006-07 campaign with Graz EC of the Austrian Hockey League. He appeared in 183 NHL games with Edmonton, St. Louis, Atlanta and Phoenix, recording 46 points (11+35) and 181 penalty minutes. Todd and his wife, Shelby, have one son.
GILLES MELOCHE Former NHL goaltender Gilles Meloche is in his fifth season as the Penguins’ full-time goaltending coach and 25th with the organization. Meloche has been instrumental in developing Marc-Andre Fleury into a Stanley Cup-winning netminder. Meloche served as a Penguins scout from 1989-2006 and also doubled as a goaltending coach/consultant during much of that time. He was also part of the staff when the Penguins won Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992. A native of Montreal, Quebec, Meloche spent 18 seasons as an NHL goaltender with Chicago, California, Cleveland, Minnesota and Pittsburgh. He played the final three seasons of his career in Pittsburgh following a 1985 trade. Meloche appeared in 788 NHL games during his career, posting a record of 270-351-131 with a 3.64 goals-against average. In 45 career playoff games, he posted a 21-19 record and a 3.48 goals-against average. Gilles and his wife, Sophie, reside in Pittsburgh. His son, Eric, is a pro player who was a member of the Penguins organization from 2000-04.

OUR NEW HOME CONSOL Energy Center opened in August, 2010 as Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue — home of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins as well as other professional and collegiate sports, concerts, children’s shows, skating shows and more. It replaces the old Civic Arena/ Mellon Arena, which had operated since 1961 and was home of the Penguins from their inception in CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for 1967. It was the oldest arena in the the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins. National Hockey League. “CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins,” said David Morehouse, CEO of the hockey team. “With open concourses, comfortable seating, cutting-edge technology, a state-of-the-art scoreboard and sound system, and an extensive array of food and beverage options, it is a spectacular symbol for the Pittsburgh of the 21st century.” CONSOL Energy Center was completed on time and under budget, thanks to the combined efforts of architectural firms Populous and Astorino; the owner’s representative, ICON; the construction company, PJ Dick/Hunt; and the excellent construction workers and skilled trade workers of Western Pennsylvania. The new arena seats 18,087 for hockey, 19,000 for basketball and almost 20,000 for concerts. It is a green building and is the first NHL arena to attain LEED Gold certification. Even before its doors had opened, CONSOL Energy Center landed commitments from shows that would have bypassed the old arena — the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament first and second rounds, the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four, and back-to-back concerts by music legend Paul McCartney. McCartney, who first played Pittsburgh with the Beatles in 1964 but hadn’t performed here since 1990, christened the new arena with a grand opening concert on August 18, 2010. In its first season of operation, CONSOL Energy Center also will be home to the Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League — bringing indoor football back to the city for the first time in almost 20 years. A funding plan for the new arena project was completed in March, 2007, thanks to the combined efforts of Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, among others. The Sports & Exhibition Authority owns the building on behalf of the city and county, and the Penguins have the lease. The new arena is managed by SMG, with Jay Roberts serving as general manager.

GAME NOTES Tonight the Penguins and Phoenix Coyotes meet for the second and final time this season. Pittsburgh earned a 4-3 shootout victory in Phoenix on Nov. 6 after falling behind, 2-0, in the first period. Goals by Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin tied the game in the second period, and after the Coyotes regained the lead, Chris Kunitz tied it again with a late second-period goal. Mark Letestu won the game by converting his first NHL shootout attempt. . . Eric Belanger and Wojtek Wolski each had a goal and an assist for the Coyotes. . . This is the first time the teams have met twice in one season since 2002-03, when the Coyotes won both games against the Penguins. . . Pittsburgh has won four of the last six games between the teams after losing the previous six games. . . The Penguins killed all four Phoenix power plays in the November game, the first time in seven games the Coyotes had failed to convert a power play chance against the Penguins. . . Phoenix has scored first in three straight games against Pittsburgh Mark Letestu converted his first shootout attempt for the win in Phoenix on Nov. 6. . . . The Penguins have lost three of their last four home games against Phoenix, the only win coming on Dec. 3, 2007 (3-1). In those four games, the Penguins have scored a total of five goals. . . Phoenix beat the Penguins, 3-0, in their last game in Pittsburgh on Oct. 7, 2009 as Ilya Bryzgalov made 24 saves and Radim Vrbata scored one goal and set up another. . . Phoenix has scored a power-play goal in five straight road games against the Penguins, going 6-for-23 (26.0 percent). . . The Penguins’ records for fewest shots allowed in a home game and a road game were both set against Phoenix. The Coyotes managed only 11 shots here against the Penguins on Dec. 11, 1999, and they managed just 13 shots at home against the Penguins on Dec. 12, 1998. . . Pittsburgh is 37-26-3-0 all-time against Winnipeg/Phoenix, including 21-11-0-0 at home.

THE PENGUINS This is the middle game of a three-game homestand for the Penguins, who opened it last Wednesday against the New York Rangers. Outside of the break for the NHL All-Star Game, this is one of just two four-day breaks for the Penguins. The other comes March 16-19. . . Pittsburgh will host Florida on Wednesday night and then travel to Washington on Thursday for its first meeting with the Capitals this season. . . The Penguins had a 12-game winning streak snapped, the second-longest in their history, when they fell 3-2 in Philadelphia last Tuesday. . . The Penguins, of course, hold the NHL record with 17 consecutive victories March 9-April 10, 1993. . . Pittsburgh was also trying to set a team record by winning its eighth straight road game that night in Philadelphia. . . The Penguins had won seven straight home games and were 8-0-1 in their last nine home games before facing the Rangers here last week. . . Sidney Crosby took an 18-game points streak into the game against the Flyers. It was the fourth-longest in team history at that point, surpassed only by his own 19-game streak in 2007-08 and Mario’s two longest streaks, 28 games in 1985-86 and 46 games in 1989-90. . . Evgeni Malkin missed four straight games before returning from injury to score twice against the Flyers on Dec. 14 . . . Marc-Andre Fleury had won a career-high 11 straight games and was 13-0-1 in his last 14 decisions before facing the Flyers. During that 14-game streak, Fleury had a goals-against average of 1.69 and a save percentage of .940. . . Dustin Jeffrey scored one goal and set up another in his first game with the Penguins this season, a 5-2 win at Buffalo on Dec. 11.

THE COYOTES Phoenix is coached by Dave Tippett, who played for the Penguins during the 1992-93 season, scoring six goals and 25 points. He finished his NHL playing career the following season in Philadelphia. . . The Coyotes had won two of their last three games and three of their last five before starting their current six-game road trip in New Jersey last Tuesday. They played in New York against the Rangers last Thursday and on Long Island Saturday. Phoenix will conclude the trip with games in San Jose on Thursday and Dallas on Sunday. . . This trip begins a 15-game stretch in which Phoenix plays 11 road games. . . Ray Whitney was leading the Coyotes in scoring with 20 points through the team’s first 28 games. No Coyote had more than eight goals prior to their game in New Jersey. . . The Coyotes began the road trip six games over .500 but were fourth in the Pacific Division, two points behind first-place Dallas.

COMMUNITY UPDATE TOYS, TOYS, AND MORE TOYS: PENGUINS FANS LEND A HELPING HAND THIS HOLIDAY SEASON The Pittsburgh Penguins returned this season with their annual Toys for Tots Holiday Toy Drive. The Penguins joined with the U.S. Marine Corps to collect toys and cash on Monday, Dec. 6 and Wednesday, Dec. 8. Fans were encouraged to bring new, unwrapped toys or make monetary donations at CONSOL Energy Center gates until 10 minutes into the first period. Contributions were accepted by the wives and girlfriends of Penguins’ players and members of the Booster Club. Every fan that donated was eligible to win autographed Penguins memorabilia. Thanks to the generosity of all the fans in attendance, the 2010 Toys for Tots Holiday Toy Drive raised $7,105 and 1,941 toys for underprivileged children this holiday season. The Penguins organization has sponsored a holiday toy drive every season since 1992. All of the money raised will be used by the Toys for Tots program to purchase additional toys for needy children. Those toys, along with the toys collected at this year’s drive, will be distributed throughout the city before the holidays.

On Sunday, October 10, sixteen youth hockey teams from the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) in the Squirt age group (age 9 - 10) participated in a shootout competition at CONSOL Energy Center. The event was videotaped to be shown in episodes at Penguins home games. The first round of competition featured heats between two teams striving to advance to the next round. Sixteen teams fielded five skaters shooting against the opposing team’s goalie. After each team competition, an individual shooter and goaltender squared off against the opposing team’s individual tandem for a one-on-one competition. Each winning team and pair of individuals advanced to the next round of eight teams/tandems. The format repeated as teams and individual pairs advanced through the quarter-final heats to move on to the semi-finals. Robust competition marked the semi-final round for teams and individual tandems. The remaining two teams and individual tandems then had to “leave it all on the ice” in vying for the championship. Early in the second intermission of each Penguins home game the various heats in the competition will be featured. Enjoy each episode.

We have a lot of great leaders here. I take pride in being named captain, yet there are a lot of guys that could have been named captain and I’m just honored to be the one. We have a lot of good leaders here, from our coaching staff all the way through. What has the team chemistry been like so far in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton? I think we have a great mix of older guys and some younger guys. There’s just that mix of guys who have been with the Penguins organization for maybe more than a year in WB/S, to a new crop of guys that have come in and have gelled with the players who have been here before. What’s it been like adjusting to the Pittsburgh organization after coming from Tampa Bay? The transition’s been pretty seamless having a great group of guys here and being able to get along with them. The coaching staff has been great. Starting from training camp with the Penguins and in Pittsburgh, it’s just been great. For us to get off to such a great start in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton like we have, it’s made that transition that much easier. With the way we’ve been winning, things are a lot more fun. How do you plan on building off your individual success from last season? I think our depth is a lot deeper than the other teams I’ve played on in the past. For me, this year is way more hockey games than I’ve had in past years. Personally, as you get older that’s a huge part of what becomes a lot more important than individual success and things like that. I’m excited for my start; I’m healthy after some groin trouble at the start of the year. I’m feeling good and I’m starting to feel like I’m hitting my stride, personally. 47

BAGS, BACKPACKS AND PURSES For security purposes, only small personal bags (purses, baby or diaper bags, etc.) will be permitted inside CONSOL Energy Center and all items are subject to search upon entrance. TAG-A-KID In the event a parent and child might be separated at a CONSOL Energy Center event, parents can register their child with the Tag-A-Kid program. A wristband with the parent’s seat location and contact number will be given to the child. Registration is available at the Guest Services office located outside section 104.
VIDEO CAMERAS Use of video or audio recording equipment is strictly prohibited. CONSOL Energy Center reserves the right to confiscate any tape or film and remove the patron from the building.
WHEELCHAIRS A limited number of wheelchairs are available for transporting guests that are disabled to their seating location. Guests can be transported from the gates to their seats. If a wheelchair is needed for the duration of the event, guests must supply their own wheelchairs. Wheelchairs cannot be reserved in advance. THE PENGUINS GAME VAULT JANUARY 27, 2007 • PENGUINS 7, COYOTES 2 JOBING.COM ARENA Penguins superstar Sidney Crosby has dealt with comparisons to Wayne Gretzky, the National Hockey League’s all-time scoring leader, since his early teenage years. Gretzky, in fact, helped fuel those comparisons by stating that if a player will every break his scoring records, it will be Crosby. The two met for the first time in the NHL on Jan. 27, 2007 when Crosby’s Penguins visited the Gretzky-led Phoenix Coyotes at Jobing.com Arena. Not surprisingly, the ‘Next One’ put on quite the show in front of the ‘Great One’, scoring a highlight-reel goal and adding three assists in a 7-2 Penguins’ rout. The victory, which was Pittsburgh’s third straight during a span where they would win six consecutive, completed a perfect sweep of the team’s first annual ‘Dads’ Trip’. Led by Mark Recchi’s 500th career goal, the Penguins were coming off of a 4-3 shootout victory over the Dallas Stars the previous night. In front of a sellout crowd in Glendale, Crosby and Co. began their assault of Mikael Tellqvist just 24 seconds into the opening period as Crosby and Recchi, who had a goal and three assists as well, teamed together to set up Ryan Malone to give the Penguins the early 1-0 advantage. Phoenix scored two of the game’s next three Sidney Crosby led the Penguins to a 7-2 goals on tallies by Shane Doan and Steven victory over the Coyotes on Jan. 27, 2007. I was lucky enough to get my stick there.” Ronald Petrovicky and Recchi capped the scoring as Crosby and the Penguins made their dads proud by skating away with a 7-2 shellacking of Gretzky and the Coyotes.

NCAA ON DISPLAY The Robert Morris Colonials enjoyed their first trip to the CONSOL Energy Center so much they’re coming back for an encore visit. Robert Morris will take on Atlantic Hockey Association rival and 2010 Frozen Four participant RIT at 3 p.m. on Dec. 30, the first game in an NCAA-AHL double-header that will also feature the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins taking on the Hershey Bears at 7:30 p.m. The NHL Bridgestone Winter Classic will take place two days later when the Penguins and Capitals collide at Heinz Field. Robert Morris defeated Air Force, 3-2, in its first appearance at CONSOL back on Oct. 17. “It’ll be a great experience to be involved in the Winter Classic,” RMU head coach Derek Schooley said. “Any time you can associate yourself with a high-profile event like that it’s extremely exciting. The Penguins have been tremendous in including us and we’re very thankful for that. “We also have to remember this is a huge league game for us. We can’t get caught up in the festivities. We can enjoy the festivities, hopefully, after we take care of business.” Robert Morris entered last weekend at 10-4-2 overall and leading the AHA at 7-4-2 (16 points). The Colonials were scheduled to entertain Colgate in a two-game, non-conference series at the Island Sports Center. RIT was 8-7-2 overall and second in the AHA at 7-3-1 (15 points) prior to last Friday night’s scheduled AHA game against Canisius. The two teams met at RIT on Oct. 29 (RIT won, 3-2, in overtime). This time the Colonials were hoping to take advantage not just of their home-ice advantage but their home-town advantage. Seven players on Robert Morris’ roster this season are from Western Pennsylvania. “One of our stated goals is to keep the best Pittsburgh kids at home,” Schooley said.

PENS PROFILE MAX TALBOT
For Max Talbot, 2009-10 was a lost season. Limited by groin and shoulder problems, the Penguins’ Stanley Cup hero of 2009 played just 45 games. He scored twice. Talbot skates and hits. That’s his game. It’s tough to skate fast with a bad groin. Difficult to hit hard when you’re nursing a bum shoulder. But Talbot never complained. Never made excuses. Never used the injuries as a crutch. He still won’t. “I don’t like to talk about last year,” Talbot said. “I’m doing good now. Let’s talk about that.” So be it. Talbot came out flying in 2010-11. Talbot had five goals and four assists in his first 31 games while reestablishing the bold, abrasive style that’s made him a fan favorite since the day he first donned a Penguins uniform. Talbot is also a big part of the Penguins’ elite penalty-killing unit. The Penguins’ PK ranked No. 2 in the NHL as of Dec. 12, foiling 88.2 percent of opposition power plays. Most important, Talbot played excellent two-way hockey to help the Max Talbot had five goals and four assists in Penguins put together a winning streak his first 31 games while reestablishing his bold, abrasive playing style. that had reached 12, second-best in club history, as of their 5-2 victory at Buffalo on Dec. 11. “It’s fun,” said Talbot, 26. “It’s a good streak. It’s fun to go out on the rink and play. It’s all about the next game. “We’re playing better and better. It’s a process. You won’t just get success because you want success. You’re going to get success by working, by getting chemistry, by everybody being on the same page. We had new guys coming in. It was tough at times. A little adjustment here and there. “It got better and better. Now, everyone is on the same page. Everyone is willing to sacrifice their body and do the little things that make us successful. It’s a mental thing. If you know you’re going to win, it’s huge.” The 5-foot-11, 190-pound Montreal native feels good. It’s one reason he’s playing well, though Talbot always sports his share of bumps and bruises. “As a hockey player, you’re never really 100 percent healthy,” Talbot said. “But there’s a difference between being 90-95 percent healthy — let’s say you have a charley horse, continued on page 117

something you can play with — and being 60-65 percent healthy. It’s a huge factor. Right now I’m feeling great. It’s definitely easier for me than last year.” Talbot’s energy is a big part of the Penguins’ very aggressive PK. “You always say the goalie is your best penalty killer, and I think that’s right,” said Talbot. “[Marc-Andre Fleury and Brent Johnson] have been making big saves when we need them. You’re a man short. You’re obviously going to give up some quality chances. You just try to cut the chances in half and give them the easiest shot to stop. “Penalty-killing is just trust in each other. We have 4-5 forwards rotating out there. The defensemen have our backs. It’s trusting each other and trusting the system.” The Penguins’ PK pressures the puck quite a bit, and attacks when possible. “That’s when you’re a confident bunch,” said Talbot. “But the first thing is always to kill the penalty. If you achieve that, it’s going to give your team momentum. “But sometimes you’re going to have some chances. You’re going to be able to skate the puck out of your zone and take some shots. Goals on the PK can provide huge momentum. That comes with confidence.” Talbot netted a monstrous short-handed goal Nov. 17 against visiting Vancouver. Talbot and Matt Cooke got two two-onones on the same shift; Talbot converted the second, wrapping around his own rebound for a 2-0 lead en route to a 3-1 victory, the first of the Penguins’ epic streak. Exhausting work, Talbot confirmed, “But when your legs are burning a little bit, you have to have mental strength.” Talbot has never been short on fortitude. He proved that in 2009 amid the pressure of Game Seven at Detroit, scoring twice to give the Penguins a 2-1 victory and the Stanley Cup. But Talbot always looks ahead. Right now Talbot netted a monstrous short-handed his main focus — beyond the next game is the goal Nov. 17 against visiting Vancouver. Winter Classic on Jan. 1 at Heinz Field against the Washington Capitals. Talbot missed the 2008 Winter Classic at Buffalo with an injury. “Everyone is really excited about it,” said Talbot. “You don’t focus on it, because we have so many games to go before that. But it’s going to be something exciting for all of us, and it’s a second chance for me and Fleury. In Buffalo, we both had ankle problems and didn’t have a chance to play. “Playing outside, in front of your fans, 70,000 people at Heinz Field. . . I’m a big Steelers fan, so that’s going to be special. Hopefully the weather is going to be awesome, and the Penguins are going to prevail and win the game.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

PLAYERS BRAVE THE COLD FOR POWER PLAY STREET HOCKEY Over 300 dedicated street hockey players battled through sub-freezing temperatures, snow and ice to compete in the Penguins Power Play Street Hockey Tournament hosted by the Greater Pittsburgh Dek hockey Center in Penn Hills Dec. 4-5. The two-day tournament pitted 37 teams broken into six divisions. Youth teams competed for a chance to participate in the Penguins’ “Winter Classic” Street Hockey Tournament to be played at the Brighton Heights Street Hockey Complex on December 27. Though snow and ice had the rinks looking like an ice hockey surface, the players weathered the storm and put on an excellent show for those bold enough to watch the outdoor games. “They’re definitely a hearty bunch,” said tournament director Mark Madden of WXDX-FM. “But playing outside is a look back at the beginnings of the sport. Nobody starts out playing inside. They start out on a tennis court, in their driveway or out on the street.” In the first of the three youth finals, all of which were played Sunday, the first scheduled matchup was between the Team Pittsburgh Sharks and the Penn Hills B team. The Sharks managed to put two goals behind Penn Hills netminder Tyler Fischetti, who moved up a level for this tournament. The Sharks held on to their two-goal lead and kept Penn Hills from scoring, finishing with a 2-0 win. Outstanding Players for the game were Tyler Fischetti and Cal Bertram. The 10-12-year-old final matched the Penn Hills A team against the Team Pittsburgh Knights. Both teams fought hard but, playing in his age group, Fischetti proved too much for the Knights, posting a shutout as Penn Hills A rolled to a 3-0 win. Fischetti’s blank job again earned him Outstanding Player honors alongside Ray Kemmler of the Knights. In the youngest division, ages 7-9, Penn Hills A played Franklin Regional Street. In the closest final, Penn Hills managed to edge Franklin Regional by the narrowest of margins, 2-1. Ryan Matthews of Penn Hills and Austin Lapiana of Franklin Regional earned Outstanding Player kudos. Other teams qualifying for the “Winter Classic” street hockey tournament were: DekStar and Penn Hills A in the 13-15 age bracket, Franklin Regional Street and Butler in 10-12, and Justice and the Team Pittsburgh Warriors in 7-9. “It’s snowing just like it did at the Winter Classic,” Fischetti said. “It feels like were playing in the same weather as those guys did.”

On January 1, 2008, in a game for the ages at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, NY, the Penguins and Sabres took to the great outdoors … and the NHL Winter Classic was born. A National Hockey League attendance record setting crowd of 71,217 witnessed as the Penguins prevailed, 2-1. Sidney Crosby’s shootout-winner amid the snowfall turned the final page on the game’s storybook ending. PIZZA HUT’S BOOK IT! The Pittsburgh Penguins have partnered with Pizza Hut’s “BOOK IT!” reading program for the 2010-11 academic year. Created in 1985, Pizza Hut’s “BOOK IT!” program is a national reading incentive initiative for children in grades K-6. Students who meet reading goals established by their teachers throughout the school year are rewarded with free one-topping Personal Pan Pizzas, a BOOK IT! card and a small prize. The Penguins partnership will provide additional prizes for BOOK IT! participants in Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Westmoreland and Washington counties including themed pocket folders and stickers that track each student’s progress. Students will also be eligible to win prizes as well as Pizza Hut pizza parties for their classes hosted by the team’s mascot, Iceburgh. JEFFREY’S AHL SUCCESS TRANSLATES AT NHL LEVEL

Penguins forward Dustin Jeffrey kept expectations for himself in check when he was recalled from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League on Dec. 10. Although the 22-year-old third-year pro was leading the AHL in scoring with 30 points (13G-17A) at the time of his recall, Jeffrey simply wanted to take advantage of the opportunity presented to him when he made his season debut against the Buffalo Sabres at HSBC Arena the next night. “Everybody that’s in WB/S, they’re waiting for their opportunity,” Jeffrey said following the morning skate on Dec. 11. “I was lucky enough to get mine now, so hopefully I can make the most of it.” Boy did Jeffrey ever make the most of his 16th career NHL contest. He scored the Penguins’ opening goal 6:43 into the opening period and later added an assist on Mike Rupp’s third-period tally to collect the first two-point night of his NHL career while leading Pittsburgh to a 5-2 victory over the Sabres that increased the team’s winning streak to 12 games. Jeffrey kick-started — literally and figuratively speaking — the Penguins’ offense by driving hard to the top of the crease on his second shift. Ben Lovejoy sent a pass Jeffrey’s way from the far corner. While Jeffrey was unable to get his stick on the puck, his skate sat angled in the perfect position right behind his blade. Lovejoy’s pass hit the inside of Jeffrey’s skate, causing the puck to redirect itself through the legs of Sabres netminder Ryan Miller. Later in the game Jeffrey picked up an assist when his shot-pass from the same corner where Lovejoy feed him earlier in the night was stopped by the pad of Miller, but the ensuing rebound was quickly banged home by an uncovered Rupp. “Jeffrey gets in his first game of the year and starts us off with a goal,” head coach Dan Bylsma Dustin Jeffrey had the first two point game of said. “He goes to the net and gets his NHL career against the Sabres on Dec. 11.

the goal. [His line then] got a huge goal with three minutes left. They got to the offensive zone and had guys in the blue paint. That one sealed the deal for us.” Jeffrey, who anchored the team’s fourth line between Rupp and Craig Adams, was quick to praise his veteran linemates for allowing the unit to combine for five points (2G-3A) in the victory. “Our line played well all night,” Jeffrey said. “Our play all night was to get pucks behind their defense. They like to jump up on the rush. I think we took advantage of that. We kept pucks below the goal line and put pucks to the net.” Getting pucks to the net — and into the net — is something that Jeffrey has done with a lot more regularity the past year and a half. Prior to last season, Penguins management told Jeffrey, who was used as a checking-line center during his rookie campaign in 2008-09, that they wanted to move him to left wing with the hope of watching his game take on more of an offensive flair during his second season. Jeffrey responded to the challenge in a big way, leading WB/S and ranking 11th in the AHL with 71 points (24G-47A) in 77 games. He was rewarded by being named to the AHL Canadian All-Star Team. But as good as his season was statistically, and it ranked among the highest-scoring totals in franchise history, the Penguins still had one more area they wanted to see Jeffrey’s game grow — away from the puck. When Jeffrey, who has since been shifted back to his natural center position, was returned to WB/S for a third season as one of the final training camp cuts in September, he vowed to continue improving in this area. The fact that he was able to do so was paramount to him earning his promotion. “This year he has been significantly better than last year,” Bylsma said. “Last year he was getting the points, but this year his all-around game has been better in every area of the game: work ethic level; penalty kill; power play has been outstanding; five-on-five. … this is a guy we’ve heard a lot of great things about his play away from the puck, leadership, and this is a call-up he’s earned.” While Jeffrey doesn’t know how long this stint will last, he hopes to do all of those little things that will stand out to the coaches and allow the red-hot Penguins to keep adding tallies to the ‘W’ column. “These guys are doing really well here, so you just kind of want to come in and you don’t want to stir the pot too much,” he said. “You just kind of want to play your game and hopefully I’ll help Last season, Dustin Jeffrey led the WB/S the team.” Penguins with 71 points and ranked 11th in the AHL. continued on page 141
