DISCOVER NEW REASONS TO BE INSPIRED BY THE MUSIC YOU ALREADY LOVE!

CONCERTMASTER

NOAH BENDIX-BALGLEY

Behind the Notes

In these concerts, the conductor will take you inside the music and reveal many fascinating details. Have you ever wondered if there was a story being told by the music or if the piece was revolutionary when it was composed?

The conductor and your PSO will spend the first half of the concert explaining and demonstrating the secrets behind the music. Then, after intermission, you will hear the complete performance of the music with an enriched understanding of its meaning.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 18, 2014

R. STRAUSS: ALSO SPRACH ZARATHUSTRA This concert is part of the Saturday Virtuoso and Ovation Series.

PRINCIPAL HORN

WILLIAM CABALLERO

Richard Strauss is unsurpassed as a musical storyteller. His "tone poems" tell remarkable tales about extraordinary characters, events, and places. In Also sprach Zarathustra, he comments on nothing less than the evolution of humankind, using the controversial German philosopher Freidrich Nietzche as his starting point. Guest conductor Christoph König and the orchestra will uncover the musical secrets to each of the seven "chapters" of this towering masterpiece. It begins with a musical "sunrise" made famous in Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey, possibly the most well-known two minutes of music ever written.

SATURDAY, MARCH 15, 2014

RAVEL'S MASTERPIECES This concert is part of the Saturday Bravura and Ovation Series.

Ravel: Alborada del gracioso Ravel: Pavane pour une infante défunte Ravel: Menuet antique Ravel: Boléro The music of Maurice Ravel is so familiar to audiences that it is easy to take for granted. After all, what could be complicated about a seemingly endless snare drum riff and a languorous melody? That is, of course, the wildly popular Boléro. But in this, and the other works performed with the PSO, the fluidity and ease of Ravel's music is offset by a series of complex musical decisions. Guest conductor Leonard Slatkin will reveal these musical decisions by taking Ravel's music apart and then putting it back together before your very ears. It will be an entertaining, educational and unique experience for everyone as we celebrate the music of this incomparable French master. 3

→ BE THE FIRST TO KNOW. PSO Subscribers receive first access to special festivals and concerts.

Join Music Director Manfred Honeck and the PSO for the Mozart Festival, an exploration of the five pillars of Mozart’s music.

Each of Mozart’s vast array of compositions was considered a musical gem. Throughout the festival, you will hear beautiful examples of each of the following musical pillars: symphony, concerto, chamber music, opera and sacred music.

Strauss 150

th

Although he did not coin the term, Richard Strauss wrote the book on “tone poems,” music that tells a story or describes a place. His descriptive and programmatic works are so vivid you can hear night falling and the sun rising. Music Director Manfred Honeck and the PSO have always had a special affinity for Strauss' music. Celebrate the 150th birthday of this master musical storyteller with a program featuring an orchestral suite from Strauss’ opera Elektra, the piano concert piece Burleske and the famous Suite from Der Rosenkavalier.

BRUCKNER'S FOURTH SYMPHONY

BRUCKNER “GOD HAS CHOSEN ME, OF ALL PEOPLE, FOR THIS TALENT.”

– Anton Bruckner

The music of Anton Bruckner stands alone, a mighty cathedral of sound. It is built from small sections that repeat and grow inexorably until reaching a shatteringly beautiful climax. Bruckner’s meditative music is deeply rooted in medieval mysticism, unfolding slowly and dramatically to reveal its radiant splendor to the patient listener. To prepare for the experience of Bruckner's spacious music, the PSO first presents The Tallis Scholars, a revolutionary vocal ensemble representing the pinnacle of Renaissance sacred music performance. The Tallis Scholars will set the stage for Bruckner's Fourth Symphony with music from the Renaissance period, including Gregorio Allegri's legendary Miserere. 7

2013-2014 SEASON

MAKE A GIFT TO THE PSO’S 2012-2013 ANNUAL FUND! The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra enriches the lives of thousands of people each year through our concerts, radio broadcasts and Education and Community Engagement programs throughout the tri-state region. You may not be aware but ticket sales,

including subscriptions, cover just 34% of our annual budget, and we rely on the financial support of individuals like you to make up the difference. The musicians of the PSO have led the way, with their collective gift of $100,000

to the 2013 Annual Fund, because they care so much about this great orchestra and the community. Please join them by making as generous a gift as you can to the PSO’s 2012-2013 Annual Fund with your subscription renewal.

For more information, contact your Patron Service Representative, the PSO’s Donor Relations Department at 412.392.4842, or visit www.pittsburghsymphony.org/howtogive. Every gift makes a difference!

Thank you! 19
