A MESSAGE FROM OUR MUSIC DIRECTOR Dear Friends of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, It is wonderful to be together for the start of the 2015-2016 season, my eighth as music director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. I want to extend a personal welcome to each of you and also invite you to join me in welcoming new President and CEO Melia Tourangeau. There is much to look forward to and you will find our concerts filled with dynamic performances and exciting music, from familiar favorites to ground-breaking premieres. The season will be illuminated by the outstanding talent of the Pittsburgh Symphony’s own Noah BendixBalgley, Gretchen Van Hoesen and Michael Rusinek, as well as performances by an amazing array of guest artists. We welcome the return of legendary pianist and audience-favorite Emanuel Ax, as well as the brilliant pianist sensation Daniil Trifonov who you will hear not only this weekend, but also again this May. The season includes, as well, the debuts of eight exceptional soloists, from the phenomenal technique and expression of violinist August Hadelich who joins us next weekend for the beloved Brahms Violin Concerto to the “wizard of percussion” Martin Grubinger and the extraordinary talent of Western Pennsylvania native and organist phenom Cameron Carpenter. Four celebrated conductors also make their debuts, each of whom will bring their own distinctive stamp of music making and talent to the Heinz Hall stage. Personal highlights this season for me include my completion of the Beethoven Symphony cycle, performing Beethoven Symphony No. 8 next weekend. I also look forward to our theatrical presentation of Bach’s St. John Passion, a semi-staged production under the acclaimed direction of Sam Helfrich, the first time that this magnificent work has been brought to life by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. It is also a thrill to present some of the most well-known and well-loved pieces in the repertoire, including a special one-night only performance of Handel’s Messiah this December and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 this spring. We launch our 2016 European Tour in May with two exciting weekends of concerts first here at home, and then return to close the season with Mahler’s monumental Symphony No. 5. It is truly a joy to bring this great music to you, right here in our own beautiful and historic Heinz Hall. As we enter the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s 120th anniversary season, I would like to express my sincere gratitude and deep appreciation to Dick Simmons, our great Board Chair, who has been a passionate and unparalleled leader throughout his tenure. I have come to know and truly admire Dick as a person and good friend, and I am incredibly thankful for all that he has done. My special thanks, as well, to Dick’s wife, Ginny, for her warm enthusiasm, kindness and steadfast support. I would also like to extend a warm welcome to our new Board Chair, Devin McGranahan, and greatly look forward to working together with him as we begin the next chapter in the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s history. I am so proud of the continued success of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the bold and brilliant playing that comes to life with each performance. I invite you to be a part of the excitement and adventure and look forward to sharing the journey with you. With my best wishes,

Manfred Honeck 4

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT & CEO Dear Friends, On behalf of our Board of Trustees and the entire staff of the Pittsburgh Symphony, I would like to thank you for joining us for this season’s first BNY Mellon Grand Classics concert weekend. It would be hard to imagine a more thrilling program! We will be treated to the sights and sounds of our fantastic Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra under the baton of our celebrated Music Director Manfred Honeck. Having recently arrived in Pittsburgh from Utah, I am very excited to be experiencing my first symphony concerts as President and CEO of the Pittsburgh Symphony. I am humbled and inspired by the tremendous creative force that defines this orchestra. It is truly a privilege to work to advance its mission — here in Pittsburgh and around the world. You may notice that, over the summer months, we have completed some renovations in the hall — all designed to enhance your concert-going experience. I hope that, in particular, you are able to enjoy the revitalized lounge area on the Grand Tier level. Thank you so much for being a part of this wonderful opening weekend and for your support of the Pittsburgh Symphony. You inspire our musicians to perform at the highest level of artistic quality because of your enthusiasm and dedication. I look forward to many opportunities to greet you in person at Heinz Hall. I will often be in the lobby before concerts, so please stop and say hello. Sincerely,

Melia Tourangeau President and CEO

FELIX MENDELSSOHN

Symphony No. 4 in A major, Opus 90, “Italian” (1831-1833, revised 1834-1837)

ABOUT THE COMPOSER

Born 3 February 1809 in Hamburg died 4 November 1847 in Leipzig PREMIERE OF WORK

Felix Mendelssohn never learned how to take it easy. As a boy, he was awakened at 5:00 every morning to begin a full day of private tutelage, exercise, social instruction and family activities — the busy regimen he learned as a child shaped the rest of his brief life. Inactivity was anathema. Two months of bed rest occasioned by a leg injury in London in 1829 were more painful for the confinement they necessitated than for the medical condition. Throughout his days, Mendelssohn preferred travel to quiet life at home: he trooped across Europe, from Vienna to Wales, from Hamburg to Naples, and was welcomed and admired at every stop. Some of his journeys inspired music — the first of his ten trips to Great Britain, for example, which included a walking tour of Scotland (during which he enjoyed “a halfhour of inconsequential conversation” with Sir Walter Scott), gave rise to the “Scottish” Symphony and the Hebrides Overture. When he was 21, Mendelssohn embarked on an extensive grand tour of the Continent. He met Chopin and Liszt in Paris, painted the breathtaking vistas of Switzerland, and marveled at the artistic riches (and grumbled about the inhospitable treatment by the coachmen and innkeepers) of Italy. “The land where the lemon trees blossom,” as his friend Goethe described sunny Italy, stirred him so deeply that he began a musical work there in 1831 based on his impressions of Rome, Naples and the other cities he visited. The composition of this “Italian” Symphony, as he always called it, caused him much difficulty, however, and he had trouble bringing all of the movements to completion. “For the slow movement I have not yet found anything exactly right, and I think I must put it off for Naples,” he wrote from Rome to his sister Fanny. The spur to finish the work came in the form of a commission for a symphony from the Philharmonic Society of London that caused Mendelssohn to gather up his sketches and complete the task. The new Symphony was met with immediate acclaim at its premiere on May 13, 1833 in London, one of the series of British successes that helped enshrine Mendelssohn in the English pantheon of 19th-century musical genius as Queen Victoria’s favorite composer. Mendelssohn, however, was not completely satisfied with the original version of the Symphony, and he refused to allow its publication. He tinkered with it again several years later, paying special attention to the finale, but never felt the work to be perfected. It was only after his death that the score was published and became widely available. Despite Mendelssohn’s misgivings, the “Italian” Symphony has become one of the most enduring and popular pieces in the orchestral repertory, declared to be virtually perfect by the demanding British critic and

scholar Sir Donald Tovey; it was a special favorite of that cantankerous curmudgeon and one-time music critic, George Bernard Shaw. Mendelssohn cast his “Italian” Symphony in the traditional four movements. The opening movement takes an exuberant, leaping melody initiated by the violins as its principal subject and a quieter, playful strain led by the clarinets as its subsidiary theme. The intricately contrapuntal development section is largely based on a precise, staccato theme of darker emotional hue but also refers to motives from the main theme. A full recapitulation of the exposition’s materials ensues before the movement ends with a coda that recalls the staccato theme from the development. The Andante, in the style of a slow march, may have been inspired by a religious procession that Mendelssohn saw in the streets of Naples, but it also evokes the chorale prelude sung by the Two Armed Men in Mozart’s The Magic Flute. The third movement, the gentlest of dances, is in the form of a minuet/scherzo whose central trio utilizes the burnished sonorities of bassoons and horns. The finale turns, surprisingly, to a tempestuous minor key for an exuberant and mercurial dance modeled on the whirling saltarello that Mendelssohn heard in Rome.

DANIIL TRIFONOV

Piano Concerto in E-flat minor (2013-2014)

ABOUT THE COMPOSER

Born 5 March 1991 in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia. PREMIERE OF WORK

Cleveland, 23 April 2014 Cleveland Institute of Music Cleveland Institute of Music Orchestra Joel Smirnoff, conductor Daniil Trifonov, soloist THESE PERFORMANCES MARK THE PSO PREMIERE INSTRUMENTATION

Daniil Trifonov, the pianist, has garnered international critical and public acclaim such as few artists ever receive, but his earliest musical experience was as a “composer” — improvising on the household piano before he was five. “That’s how my parents actually discovered I had an interest in music,” he explained. Trifonov was born in 1991 in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia’s fifth-largest city and an important transportation, economic and cultural hub 250 miles east of Moscow that was also the birthplace of the famed writer Maxim Gorky. (The city was known as Gorky from 1932 to 1990.) The Trifonovs were a musical clan: Daniil’s grandmother was a choir conductor, his mother was a music theory teacher, and his father composed for a rock band early in life but had taken up classical idioms (with a specialty in music for the Russian Orthodox Church) by the time his son arrived. Piano lessons soon revealed the boy’s prodigious talents (he gave his first public performance at age eight) and the family moved to Moscow so he could be enrolled at the Gnessin Academy, one of the country’s elite music schools. Daniil not only made spectacular progress during the ensuing years in his piano studies at the Gnessin with Tatiana Zelikman — he won his first competition prize when he was seventeen — but he also immersed himself in the rich traditions of both Russian music and piano virtuosos through recordings and performances while continuing to nurture his interest in composition with works for keyboard and for chamber groups. Soon after making his North American debut in 2009, Trifonov chose to stay in the United States to study piano with Russian-born Sergei Babayan and composition with Keith Fitch at the Cleveland Institute of Music; he received Artist Diplomas from the school in the former discipline in 2013 (three months after his solo debut at Carnegie Hall) and the latter two years later. Trifonov composed his Piano Concerto in E-flat minor in 2013-2014 on a commission from the Cleveland Institute of Music as part of its initiative to encourage its students, in the words of the school’s president, Joel Smirnoff, “to both compose and perform, wedding the mastery of performance and composition with a love and respect for the culture of community.” Trifonov’s Concerto, his first large-scale orchestral composition, is a remarkable fulfillment of that vision as well as a continuation of the centuries-old tradition of the composervirtuosos who performed their own works, a lineage that ranges from the troubadours of Medieval France across Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin and Brahms to Prokofiev, Bartók and Gershwin. Echoes of these last three figure in the work, but it was Sergei Rachmaninoff, the quintessential 20th-century embodiment of the composer-virtuoso, who was the primary influence on Trifonov’s Concerto, which is largely modeled on similar pieces by his Russian predecessor in its scale, instrumental resources, harmonic language, seriousness of purpose

16

and no-holds-barred virtuosity. On April 24, 2014, the day after Trifonov premiered the work with the CIM Orchestra conducted by Joel Smirnoff, Zachary Lewis wrote in the Cleveland Plain Dealer, “Even having seen it, one cannot quite believe it. Such is the artistry of pianist-composer Daniil Trifonov.” As encores that evening, Trifonov played movements from his own Rachmaniniana Suite (2010) and Piano Sonata (2013). The Concerto’s first movement, an expansive sonata form, is introduced by a wideranging, rising theme (marked “sweet, mysterious” in the score) begun by bass clarinet and continued by oboe. The piano enters with a variant of the introductory motive, which becomes the formal main theme of the exposition when it is taken up with greater urgency by violins and woodwinds. Quiet, lyrical motives played by piano and then bassoons provide a contrast of mood and melody and lead to the development section, which refers briefly to the main and introduction themes before moving on to extended discussions of two new ideas — the first, a broad descending one in dotted rhythms begun by violins; the other, in quick, skittering figurations, initiated by oboe. The recapitulation includes elaborated versions of thematic materials from both introduction and exposition before a brilliant passage of grand pianism brings the movement to a tempestuous finish. Clarinet and strings provide a soft, gently rocking introduction for the piano’s poetic theme in the Andante. The central section is agitated first by insistent triplet figurations from clarinets and strings and then by fragmented motives from woodwinds and brass to urge the soloist toward the movement’s climax. The mood and music of the opening are restored, but a sudden outburst from the piano prepares for the finale, which follows without pause after a few transitional phrases. The closing movement is episodic in construction and staggeringly virtuosic in style. Cleveland critic Zachary Lewis wrote, “A pianist would have to be more than usually daring to take on an episode so jam-packed with crazed scampering, hallucinated dances, and brute stomping. Trifonov, of course, made it all seem easy, not to mention wildly exciting.” Expressive respite is provided by gentler, contrasting episodes before a flamboyant coda with reminiscences of the introductory motives from the first movement brings the Concerto to a powerful close.

For nearly a decade after his disastrous marriage in 1877, Tchaikovsky was filled with self-recrimination and doubts about his ability to compose anything more. He managed to finish the Violin Concerto during the spring of 1878, but then had to wait more than three years for someone to perform it, and did not undertake another large composition until the Manfred Symphony of 1885. His frustration was only increased by staying at home in Moscow, so he traveled frequently and far during those years for diversion. In November 1879 he set off for Rome via a circuitous route that took him and his traveling companion, his brother Modeste, through Berlin and Paris, finally arriving in the Eternal City in mid-December. Despite spending the holiday in Rome and taking part in the riotous festivities of Carnival (Tchaikovsky recorded that this “wild folly” did not suit him very well), the sensitive composer still complained in a letter written on February 17, 1880 to his benefactress, Nadezhda von Meck, that “a worm gnaws continually in secret at my heart. I cannot sleep. My God, what an incomprehensible and complicated mechanism the human organism is! We shall never solve the various phenomena of our spiritual and material existence!” Though Tchaikovsky was never long parted from his residual melancholy, his spirits were temporarily brightened by some of the local tunes he heard in Rome, and he decided to write an orchestral piece that would incorporate several of them. At the beginning of February he wrote to Mme. von Meck, “I have been working, and during the last few days I have sketched the rough draft of an Italian Caprice based on popular melodies. I think it has a bright future; it will be effective because of the wonderful melodies I happened to pick up, partly from published collections and partly out of the streets with my own ears.” As introduction to the work, Tchaikovsky used a bugle call sounded every evening from the barracks of the Royal Italian Cuirassiers, which was adjacent to the Hotel Costanzi where he was staying. He sketched the Capriccio in a week, but then did not return to the score until he was back in Russia in the spring; the orchestration was completed in mid-May at his summer home in Kamenka. The Capriccio Italien enjoyed a fine success at its premiere on December 18, 1880 by Nikolai Rubinstein and the Moscow branch of the Russian Musical Society, and audiences demanded its repetition on several subsequent concerts. Tchaikovsky admitted modeling his Capriccio Italien on Mikhail Glinka’s potpourri of Spanish themes, Night in Madrid, a piece Mili Balakirev had suggested more than a decade earlier that he study for its “masterly fusing-together of sections.” The first section of the Capriccio Italien opens with the brazen trumpet fanfare of the

18

Royal Cuirassiers, which gives way to a dolorous melody intoned above an insistent accompanimental motive. There follows a swinging tune given first by the oboes in sweet parallel thirds and later by the full orchestra in tintinnabulous splendor. A brisk folk dance comes next, then a reprise of the dolorous melody and finally a whirling tarantella, perhaps inspired by the finale of Mendelssohn’s “Italian” Symphony. This “bundle of Italian folk tunes,” as Edwin Evans called the Capriccio Italien, ends with one of the most rousing displays of orchestral sonority in all of Romantic music.

MANFRED HONECK Manfred Honeck has served as music director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra since the 2008-2009 season. Together with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Honeck’s widely celebrated performances and distinctive interpretations continue to receive international recognition. To great acclaim, Honeck and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra regularly perform in major music capitals and festivals, among them the BBC Proms, Musikfest Berlin, Lucerne Festival, Rheingau Musik Festival, Beethovenfest Bonn, Grafenegg Festival, Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. Honeck and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra also have built a close relationship with the Musikverein in Vienna. Following a weeklong residency in 2012, they will return once again for three performances in the course of an extensive tour of Europe in spring 2016. Honeck’s successful work with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra has been extensively documented on recordings with the Reference and Exton labels. The first SACD released by Reference Records of Strauss tone poems, drew rave reviews. The second recording, of Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8 and the Symphonic Suite from Janáček’s opera Jenůfa, conceptualized by Honeck himself, was nominated for a Grammy Award. Bruckner’s Symphony No. 4 was released in February 2015 to critical acclaim and additional recordings are completed for future release. Several recordings, among them Mahler’s Symphony No. 4, which won a 2012 International Classical Music Award, are also available on the Japanese label Exton. As a guest conductor, Honeck has worked with the world’s leading orchestras including the Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Staatskapelle Dresden, London Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris and Accademia di Santa Cecilia Rome. In the 20

United States, Honeck has conducted the New York Philharmonic, The Cleveland Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra and Boston Symphony Orchestra. He is also a regular guest at the Verbier Festival. In 2013, Honeck gave his successful debut with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, resulting in a CD recording of Dvořák together with Anne-Sophie Mutter for Deutsche Grammophon which received an Echo Klassik award in 2014. The 20152016 season sees him return to Bamberg, Stuttgart, Rome, Stockholm and New York, as well as the Munich Philharmonic, London Symphony Orchestra and Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, among others. Born in Austria, Honeck received his musical training at the Academy of Music in Vienna. Many years of experience as a member of the Vienna Philharmonic and the Vienna State Opera Orchestra and at the helm of the Vienna Jeunesse Orchestra have given his conducting a distinctive stamp. Honeck began his career as assistant to Claudio Abbado in Vienna. Subsequently, he was engaged by the Zurich Opera House, where he was bestowed the prestigious European Conductor’s Award in 1993. Honeck was one of three main conductors of the MDR Symphony Orchestra in Leipzig and in Oslo, he assumed the post of music director at the Norwegian National Opera and was engaged as principal guest conductor of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. From 2000 to 2006, he was music director of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Stockholm and, from 2008 to 2011, principal guest conductor of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he resumed for another three years at the beginning of the 2013-2014 season. From 2007 to 2011, Honeck was music director of the Staatsoper Stuttgart where he conducted premieres including Berlioz’s Les Troyens, Mozart’s Idomeneo, Verdi’s Aida, Richard Strauss’s Rosenkavalier, Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites and Wagner’s Lohengrin and Parsifal, as well as

DANIIL TRIFONOV Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov has made a spectacular ascent to classical music stardom since winning First Prize at both the Tchaikovsky and Rubinstein competitions in 2011 at the age of 20. Combining consummate technique with rare sensitivity and depth, his performances are a perpetual source of awe. “He has everything and more ... tenderness and also the demonic element. I never heard anything like that,” stated pianist Martha Argerich, while the Financial Times observes, “What makes him such a phenomenon is the ecstatic quality he brings to his performances. … Small wonder every western capital is in thrall to him.” Following the August release of Rachmaninoff Variations — his second title as an exclusive Deutsche Grammophon artist, recorded with the Philadelphia Orchestra and Yannick Nézet-Séguin — Trifonov remains focused on his compatriot’s music in the 2015-2016 season. He plays complete concerto cycles at the New York Philharmonic’s Rachmaninoff Festival and with London’s Philharmonia Orchestra; Rachmaninoff’s Third for debuts with the Berlin Staatskapelle and Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, where he headlines the prestigious Nobel Prize Concert, and with both the Orchestre National de Lyon and the Munich Philharmonic under Valery Gergiev; Rachmaninoff’s Fourth for his subscription debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra; and Rachmaninoff’s Second on an Asian tour with the Czech Philharmonic. Prokofiev’s Third is the vehicle for his debut with the Montreal Symphony, on an extensive North American tour, and Prokofiev’s Second for dates with the Orchestre National de France and the London Symphony Orchestra under Alan Gilbert. He also performs Chopin’s Second with the San Francisco Symphony and Michael Tilson Thomas, Tchaikovsky’s First with the La Scala Orchestra, and Liszt’s First with the Pittsburgh Symphony, at home and on a 10-stop North European tour. An accomplished composer, it is also with the Pittsburgh Symphony that he reprises his 22

own acclaimed concerto. Besides making his recital debut in Los Angeles, Trifonov undertakes an extensive European recital tour that includes stops in the principal venues of Vienna, Berlin, Geneva, Paris, Rome, Lisbon, Barcelona, and Amsterdam. He looks forward to residencies in Lugano, Switzerland, and at London’s Wigmore Hall, where he collaborates on piano duos with his former teacher, pianist Sergei Babayan, and on violin and piano duos with Gidon Kremer, whom he rejoins for concertos at the Cologne Philharmonic. Last season, Trifonov made debuts with the Atlanta, Dallas, Seattle and Toronto Symphonies and returned to orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, Washington’s National Symphony and London’s Philharmonia. For his second appearance at the BBC Proms with the London Symphony and on a Japanese tour with the Mariinsky Orchestra, his conductor was Valery Gergiev, with whom he reunited to open the 2015 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. The pianist toured a solo recital program to such key venues as London’s Royal Festival Hall, the Théâtre des Champs Élysées in Paris, Tokyo’s Opera City, Barcelona’s Palau de la Musica, and New York’s Carnegie Hall, to which he returned as the final stop on a U.S. duo recital tour with violinist Gidon Kremer. In 2012-2013, Trifonov made debuts with all the “Big Five” orchestras: the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Boston Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, and Philadelphia Orchestra; with European ensembles including Rome’s Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and London’s Royal Philharmonic; and at London’s BBC Proms. The following season, he collaborated with 19 of the world’s foremost orchestras, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the symphony orchestras of Washington, San Francisco and London.

Since making solo recital debuts at Carnegie Hall, London’s Wigmore Hall, Vienna’s Musikverein, Japan’s Suntory Hall and the Salle Pleyel in Paris in the 2012-2013 season, Trifonov has given solo recitals at venues including the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, Boston’s Celebrity Series, London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw (Master Piano Series), Berlin’s Philharmonie (the Kammermusiksaal), Munich’s Herkulessaal, Bavaria’s Schloss Elmau, Zurich’s Tonhalle, the Lucerne Piano Festival, the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, the Auditorium du Louvre in Paris and the Seoul Arts Center. Last season saw the release of Trifonov: The Carnegie Recital, the pianist’s first recording as an exclusive Deutsche Grammophon artist; captured live at his sold-out 2013 Carnegie Hall recital debut, the album scored both an ECHO Klassik Award and a Grammy nomination. His discography also features a Chopin album for Decca and a recording of Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto with Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra on the ensemble’s own label.

world’s most prestigious competitions, taking Third Prize in Warsaw’s Chopin Competition, First Prize in Tel Aviv’s Rubinstein Competition, and both First Prize and Grand Prix — an additional honor bestowed on the best overall competitor in any category — in Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Competition. In 2013 he was also awarded the prestigious Franco Abbiati Prize for Best Instrumental Soloist by Italy’s foremost music critics. Born in Nizhny Novgorod in 1991, Trifonov began his musical training at the age of five, and went on to attend Moscow’s Gnessin School of Music as a student of Tatiana Zelikman, before pursuing his piano studies with Sergei Babayan at the Cleveland Institute of Music. He has also studied composition, and continues to write for piano, chamber ensemble and orchestra. When he premiered his own piano concerto in 2013, the Cleveland Plain Dealer marveled: “Even having seen it, one cannot quite believe it. Such is the artistry of pianist-composer Daniil Trifonov.” Mr. Trifonov last soloed with the Pittsburgh Symphony in November 2013.

LEGACY OF EXCELLENCE

In addition to income from the Annual Fund, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is dependent on a robust endowment to assure its long-term financial stability. Gifts from Legacy of Excellence programs are directed to the endowment to provide for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s future. The Steinberg Society honors donors who have advised the Pittsburgh Symphony in writing that they have made a provision for the orchestra in their will. Members of the Sid Kaplan Tribute program have made a gift to the endowment of $10,000.00 or more to commemorate a particular person or event. Endowed naming opportunities for guest artists, musicians’ chairs, concert series, educational programs or designated spaces allow donors to specify a name or tribute for 10 years, 20 years or in perpetuity. Manfred Honeck, conductor Augustin Hadelich, violin (debut) AUGUSTIN HADELICH

J.S. Bach: Chaconne (Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra premiere) Beethoven: Symphony No. 8 Brahms: Violin Concerto The “Three Bs” return to Heinz Hall as Manfred Honeck introduces us to a fresh Bach transcription for orchestra, Beethoven’s unexpectedly cheerful Symphony No. 8 and Brahms’ renowned concerto for violin. With these performances of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8, Honeck will complete the entire Beethoven Symphony cycle at the Pittsburgh Symphony. Following appearances with the Boston Symphony, and the Philadelphia and Cleveland orchestras, Augustin Hadelich makes his Pittsburgh Symphony debut with this performance. Raved about by The New York Times and Washington Post for his “gorgeous tone” and “poetic communication,” this will be a don’t-miss performance!
