MANAGER’S NOTES

T HE M A N AG ER

SIMON WEAVER GOOD EVENING and a huge welcome to the EnviroVent Stadium for the visit of Carlisle United tonight. I hope you had as good a Christmas as was possible in these challenging times. I would like to extend that welcome to Chris Beech, his staff, players and officials who have made the journey over to North Yorkshire this evening. Carlisle are flying high, so will provide another stiff challenge for us, but we will be ready and be aiming to get our home form back on track. I am writing these notes prior to our trip to Oldham on Saturday. After the excellent performance and victory at Exeter, as a group we were desperate to carry the momentum on into the Salford game last saturday and give our supporters an equally good result to savour at home, but it unfortunately just wasn’t to be. Although the performance was good and there wasn’t much between the two sides at all, we were again undone by one solitary lapse in concentration and punished for that. The first goal is so important at this level and falling behind gives you a mountain to climb, so we were disappointed to concede in the manner that we did where we should have dealt with the situation before it ever became a danger. It’s a steep learning curve at this level and we know

that small errors are costing us at the moment, but that’s the nature of the beast in League Two, you do get punished for those errors, so we need to do our best to eradicate them. The season is always about the level of performance over 10 months and you finish where you deserve and but for a couple of games where we haven’t reached the levels we’d expect, we have otherwise been in every game and a large majority of our defeats have been by a solitary goal, many of which have been our own undoing. As I’ve said before, it is fine margins and in the position we are, we know we still have a great opportunity in front of us and we must demand the best from ourselves and each other to make the best of it. As this is our last home game of 2020, I’d like to wish you all a very Happy New Year and although it’s great to see the back of 2020 off the pitch, we cannot forget that on the pitch it has been the most successful year in the club’s history. Let’s hope that in 2021, we can get back to some sort of normality and at some point welcome everyone back to the EnviroVent Stadium in the not too distant future.

Simon

CAPTAIN’S NOTES

T HE C A P TA I N

JOSH FALKINGHAM FIRST OF ALL, I’D LIKE TO WISH ALL TOWN FANS A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND SAY THAT WE’RE ALL IN THIS MOMENT TOGETHER. Hopefully this time next year everything will be back to normal and we’re able to celebrate Christmas properly. It’s my favourite time of the year - it’s about families and fans and although we can’t do that how we’d all like this year, we have to understand why. Looking back at our most recent home result, I watched on from the stands due to a minor injury but I thought there wasn’t too much in the Salford game. It was one of those where there were a few half chances but nothing clear cut. The disappointment for us was that the goal was a sloppy one to concede and that’s happening too often. We win together and lose together and we won’t point fingers at each other, but it is frustrating all round because we know for the 90 minutes, there’s not really any teams that are blasting us and blowing us away. With the fans back, we’re desperate to give them a positive result to go home with so it’s frustrating we haven’t been able to do that yet. What we’re finding out this season is that the first goal is so crucial, whether it comes in the 2nd or 90th minute, it seems like if you get that first one, it’s

a real platform to go on and win the game. The win against Exeter before Salford shows how even when in a blip, getting that first goal puts you in a really strong position. When games are so constant, its hurting bodies and it can be hard to find that way to win if you go behind. We don’t find ourselves a hard luck story and we have to make sure we take the opportunities that come our way and keep doing the right things to build the momentum. We really can’t afford to look too far ahead but whoever we come up against, we know the teams are going to be evenly matched and there’s not going to be much in it. We have to take the opportunities that fall for us in the opposition box and defend well when the danger comes our way. A couple of back to back wins in this division can really make all the difference. From where we are in the table now, a couple of wins can leapfrog you right up there. Doing the basics right will put us in good stead and we have to stay positive throughout as we know that if we keep going, we can have a really strong second half to the season.

Brendan K iernan FRESH OFF THE BACK OF SCORING HIS FIRST FOOTBALL LEAGUE GOAL AT EXETER, BRENDAN KIERNAN TAKES TIME OUT TO TALK US THROUGH HIS FOOTBALLING CAREER, WITH ALL THE HIGHS AND LOWS THROWN INTO THE MIX... By Henry Whitaker

14

BRENDAN KIERNAN

Although being happy at Palace, Kiernan wasn’t offered a scholarship when he turned 16, meaning he had to look at alternative paths for his future. He went to college to do sport studies but as Kiernan explains, it wasn’t something he could get used to. “I was there for about two weeks. I kept hearing all the lads talking about football and talking about all these players. I said to myself I can’t do this, I need to be one of the players that are talked about.” GROWING UP in North London, Kiernan is a lifelong Arsenal fan and he used to live right outside the Gunner’s old Highbury ground, regularly hearing the names Dennis Bergkamp and Thierry Henry blasted through the stadium sound system. The first match Kiernan went to watch was Arsenal v Leicester and seeing the likes of Henry work his magic, it gave Kiernan a hunger for the sport. “I was about 10 years old and I couldn’t see much of the game as I was so small, I was poking my head through the gaps. From what I did see, Henry was just drifting past people and I thought ‘wow’ this is what it was about. It got my mind ticking. The way he played the game, him and Michael Owen, it was just that era of players that were great to watch.” Kiernan enjoyed playing grassroots football with his mates but his ability was to a much higher standard. His first academy club was Fulham, before moving onto Arsenal for trials. Although he played well at both London clubs, the travelling wasn’t simple for Kiernan and he therefore dropped out. The winger moved onto his local side, Bromley. Ticking over with Sunday League football. A move to Crystal Palace’s youth set up at the age of 15 was next and it came about after a school teacher had put Kiernan forward. A successful trial saw Kiernan link up with the likes of Jonny Williams and Wilfred Zaha in what Kiernan describes as a “special group of players”. “I just enjoyed my time there,” he explains. “It was an amazing blessing to start playing for Palace as they were one of the top academies in London, it was a big deal.”

After leaving college and in a random and lucky moment, Kiernan was stopped by one of his former coaches in the street and after a brief conversation, the coach promised to get Kiernan a trial with a club. It was a promise kept as Kiernan was soon on his way to Queens Park Rangers for a trial. Kiernan performed well but got a call to say Derby County wanted to have a look at him. So, Kiernan went up North for the first time and took on yet another trial. And once again, he performed well and was on the verge of signing for the Rams before weird circumstances made the deal disappear. “Derby had sent the contract forms to my dad for me to sign,” Kiernan explains. “It was during the winter and we had time off when there weren’t any games or training. I didn’t have any accommodation for this period so went back home but when I came back up, the offer was gone. I was really disappointed.” Kiernan admits that he went on trial with several clubs after this. Charlton, Southend, Leeds and Leicester to name a few. It was fair to say that even at such a young age, the London born man had dealt with his fair share of rejection. However, the winger is keen to point out that it’s “part and parcel” of the sport and just something he had to deal with. In 2009, Kiernan found his next club, AFC Wimbledon. He joined the academy and became the first player to make the step up to the club’s first team since their founding in 2002. Wimbledon were competing in the National League at the time, pushing for promotion. As a young lad, Kiernan was hungry to make his presence known within the squad. 15

“Once I had that first session with the first team, I was like a bulldog. I knew I had to make every second on the pitch count,” Kiernan admits. “I was 18, hungry for it and I found the competitive nature of the team was so infectious with everyone hungry to win.”

and also contributed 14 assists which helped them reach the play-offs.

Kiernan made his debut against Crawley in March 2011 and was part of the team to win promotion to the Football League via the playoffs. It was Kiernan’s first promotion in his first season of men’s football. It was, as he recalls, as a “special day”. Another memorable moment for Kiernan soon followed as he made his Football League debut as a substitute in a 2-1 win against Bradford City. However, by April 2013, Wimbledon had a new manager and Kiernan was out of contention. It was agreed that the attacker would leave the club to play elsewhere.

“I wanted to stop playing after a while, it just wasn’t what I wanted,” Kiernan admits. “I felt like the dream of playing in high divisions in front of fans was getting further away. It wasn’t until at Lingfield that I enjoyed it again and thought it was right to give it another go. From there, the right doors opened up for me.”

Now out of professional football, Kiernan got a job working as a personal trainer while playing for Bromley. In his first season, he made just short of 40 appearances and found that having a job alongside football made him a “more rounded” person. Kiernan scored on his debut for Bromley 16

In 2015, Kiernan found himself jumping around a few clubs including Ebbsfleet and Lingfield. It was a period in his life where he felt the footballing dream was beginning to die.

The rebuild for Kiernan began with promotion at Hampton and Richmond in the Ryman’s Premier League before reaching another playoff final, this time with Welling United scoring 13 goals. Performances with Welling had caught the attention of Simon Weaver and it wasn’t too long before Kiernan signed with Harrogate for the 201920 season. However, before joining, Kiernan had to do his research on his new club. “I remember my agent at the time mentioning Harrogate and my first thoughts were the water

BRENDAN KIERNAN

bottles. At the gym I worked at, they had the bottles and that’s what made me think about that,” he chuckles. “I looked into it, where it was and it looked like a nice place. My first thought was that it was too far for me but when thinking again, I knew it was exactly what I needed. It helped me get into a place of focus and to consistently work on my game.” The now Town man started the season well, contributing to some strong team performances and earning the Man of the Match award in front of the BT Sport cameras in the win against his former club, Ebbsfleet. Kiernan describes that award as a “really nice moment” as it was a chance for his family to see him doing well in his new surroundings. Although he didn’t get the chance to feature in the play-off success, Kiernan still classes the moment as “all sweet” as he knew he had played his part in making Town history. The Town attacker has quickly become a real fan favourite, with Kiernan regularly taking time out to speak to fans and ask how they’re doing. He’s supported mental health campaigns and recently took time out during lockdown to speak to fans who needed a chat. Kiernan believes that now more than ever it’s important for people to listen and care for each other. “It’s almost like a golden rule for me. What would I want players to do for me if I was a supporter? Yes, I’m a footballer but I’m a supporter as well. It’s not hard work to see how someone is getting on and we’ve had a crazy year so I think doing even just a small thing can make a difference. It sounds a bit cliché but it’s good to talk to people. You don’t know the battles some people are having and I think it should be a normal thing to want to help people.” This season, Kiernan has had to battle his way into the starting XI and that hard work recently began to pay off as the former Palace academy man scored his first Football League goal in the away win against high flying Exeter. It was a goal that Kiernan himself admits was a “long time coming” as well as it being a gift for his family who have supported him throughout. Highs and lows are to be expected this season but Kiernan is confident the side can have a productive season with this team being full of “fighters”. And for Kiernan, he’s closing in on 50 Town appearances for Harrogate, with his focus on continuing to better himself in the future. “To be honest, it doesn’t feel like 50 appearances, but it’s nice to be part of a club that has done something special. The team has done so well, it’s down to them. In the future, I want to help the next Brendan Kiernan and for now, be the best possible Brendan Kiernan I can be, that’ll make me happy.” 17

TONIGHT’S OPPOSITION

CARLISLE UNITED

Carlisle United’s origins can be traced back to 1904 and the annual meeting of Shaddongate United when members of the club voted to change their name to Carlisle United. In 1905, they joined the Lancashire Combination and four years later moved to Brunton Park. From 1910 they competed in the North Eastern League, winning the title in 1922.

In 1928, Carlisle United replaced Durham City in the Football League. Carlisle’s first fixture in August 1928 saw a 3-2 victory at Accrington Stanley. A week later they overcame Hartlepool 8-0, still the club record victory. In 1962, Carlisle clinched promotion for the first time in their history but twelve months later returned to Division Four. The following year Carlisle were promoted again with a record 113 goals scored. Carlisle were promoted to the First Division (now the Premier League) for the 1974-75 season and in the words of Bill Shankly, it was ‘the greatest feat in the history of the game’. They won their first three games and briefly stood at the top of the First Division but despite playing attractive football, the Cumbrians eventually finished bottom. This remains as their only ever appearance in the top flight. A club steeped in history and drama – none less so than when keeper Jimmy Glass scored with the last kick of the season in May 1999 to secure their

league status. But after just one win in the first 21 games of the 2003-04 campaign, the Blues did drop out of the Football League just nine days before the club’s centenary. Carlisle spent just one season in the Conference defeating Stevenage in the play off final and then twelve months later, became champions of League Two. In 2008 Carlisle reached the Division One play offs, losing to Leeds United. After several mid table finishes, 2013-14 ended with relegation back to League Two and although the Blues enjoyed an upbeat spell under Keith Curle a play-off campaign in 2016-17 ended in defeat to Exeter City in the semi-final. John Sheridan took over from Curle but was tempted away six months later by Chesterfield, and Steven Pressley was appointed during the January 2019 transfer window. He parted ways with the club 10 months later, with Chris Beech appointed at the end of November 2019. After an 18th place PPG finish last season, the Blues have made a fantastic start to the campaign this term, currently topping the table and occupying the promotion/playoff places since mid-October. Their impressive home form has been a major contributor to that as they have amassed 25 out of a possible 30 points at Brunton Park. Away from home, they have four wins from their 11 games so far and five losses.

Joining the Blues in August, Farman started his career on the non-league circuit with Blyth Spartans, but it was his move to Gateshead in the summer of 2009 which really started to put him on the map. He played 64 games for the Heed, and a loan spell with Lincoln preceded a permanent switch to Sincil Bank where he went on to make over 200 appearances for the Imps in a six-year stay. ASK AWAY WE GOT IN TOUCH WITH LIFELONG BLUES FAN SIMON CLARKSON TO GET AN INSIGHT INTO SUPPORTING CARLISLE AND HIS THOUGHTS FOR THE SEASON AHEAD. What was your first Carlisle game? I think it was 21st August 1979 against Blackburn Rovers which was also the game that Peter Beardsley made his league debut. Why do you support Carlisle? I could not consider supporting anyone else. The club is a big part of the community and like a second family to fans. I am proud to be a fan. I have had so many great experiences as a supporter and developed life-long friendships. What is your most memorable game? Without doubt 8th May 1999 and the last kick of the season goal by our goalkeeper Jimmy Glass, to avoid relegation to non-league. Had we gone down then, we may not have got back into the Football League for some time.

Who should we watch out for? Rhys Bennett is top quality. He oozes class, never looks ruffled and his calmness puts others at ease. He’s weighed in with some big goals too. Who do you fancy for promotion this season? The January transfer window will be significant, so I expect the likes of Bolton Wanderers and Salford City to flex their financial muscles to put themselves in the promotion mix. Newport and Cheltenham Town will have staying power based on continuity from previous seasons.

What are your hopes for the 2020-21 campaign? They are becoming more and more optimistic every week. As I write we are second and playing well. Fingers crossed, I’m hoping for play-offs at least.

What’s your opinion of Harrogate Town? I am gutted that I can’t make my first visit over to the ground. I’ve been impressed with the start and think you will be able to establish yourselves as a league club.

Are you pleased with the club’s transfer business? Delighted! We have modelled our recruitment on mainly young, hungry players with a point to prove. Pace, athleticism and a big work ethic are essential ingredients. Mix in a couple of experienced pros and we have a good team. Who is the fans favourite? If I had to pick one it would be Gime Touré. He can be mesmerising at times when he has the ball at his feet. He generates that sense of anticipation when he gets the ball. You never quite know what will happen next.

What’s your prediction for the match today? A tough game for us but one that we might just sneak by the odd goal.

Girls U16s progress to Cup Quarter Finals West Riding Girls Football League Cup Town Girls U16s 4 v 0 Silsden Dragons

Player of the Match Maddie Ashby

IN BRIGHT SUNSHINE on Saturday 19th December, Harrogate Town Girls U16s entertained Silsden Dragons in the cup. Silsden are riding high at the top of Division Two, scoring on average six goals a game, and they came out determined to produce a cup upset. Harrogate had to work extremely hard to combat Silsden’s attacking prowess and it is testament to the girls’ teamwork that they kept a clean sheet. The first half was a tight affair with few clearcut chances, but Harrogate upped the tempo in the second half and posed more of an attacking threat. The Silsden goalkeeper, Katie Elliot, had an excellent match making a string of fine saves but twelve minutes into the second half Harrogate took the lead. It was a worthy goal to break the deadlock, Lucy Taylor’s clever through ball found Eva Jenkins who held off a defender and slotted home underneath the onrushing goalkeeper. Five minutes later Town doubled their lead when Niamh Tyssen smashed home an unstoppable shot from an acute angle. Town’s goalkeeper Taia Port then bravely smothered a Silsden attack as they pushed forward but Town remained resolute. Harrogate exploited Silsden’s need to attack with Eva Jenkins scoring twice more to snare her fifth hattrick of the season. Manager Nic Streatfield was delighted with how the girls played in what 34

was their first competitive match in more than two months, “I thought it was a really good game of football and credit must go to both teams, but to be honest it is just absolutely brilliant to see girls playing again.” Maddie Ashby was player of the match as Harrogate progress to the quarter finals. A POEM SUMMING UP FOOTBALL IN DAYS GONE BY...

WHEN SATURDAY WAS BY HAROLD BURGESS (1916-1974)

Floodlit blades, lines of lime, 1500 Hours, Kick Off time. 22, half in red, half in blue, the lads in black, the whistle blew. Cold, concrete steps lined with Rome’s finest, thumbs up, thumbs down. Gladiators, 3 lions, you only sing when you are winning. Overalls to wash, slam locked factory gate, Saturday, ale on the slate. Sharp walk, darkness cast aside by a stadium of light, win is the talk. Numbers, 1 to 11, shirts tucked in, black leather boots, dubbing, brillcream. The off side trap, tackle from behind, shoulder charge, clear it, man on. Hot dogs, transistors buzz, half time a bit of bother, here’s the Fuzz. Derby losing to the Magpies, 2 nil down, clock ticking, time flies. The lino is flag happy, the ref their twelfth man, the parrot is feeling unwell. Week in, week out we cough up hard earned cash to see the lads win, bloody win! Long walk home, pennies went on beer not on bus fare, mutter and moan. We need a big lad at number 9, fast buggers down the wings hugging the line. A bob in my pocket, a bag of spice and the Saturday Pink. Tea, Morecambe and Wise, Jimmy Hill, Parkinson, Appointment with Fear.

Exete r City SATURDAY 16TH JANUARY 2021 SKY BET LEAGUE TWO, 3PM

Defeated in the play-off final at Wembley in June, Exeter City missed out on promotion from League Two in 2019-20 but they will be determined to win promotion this season after three play-off final defeats in four seasons. Last season, Matt Taylor’s side finished fifth on a PPG basis and in the play-off semi-finals overturned a first leg defeat at Colchester United to win 3-2 and reach another final, but Northampton Town triumphed 4-0 at Wembley. Over the summer there were nine departures, and Exeter have used youth players to fill CLICK HERE TO ORDER YOUR MATCHDAY PROGRAMME ONLINE FROM THE TOWN CLUB SHOP TODAY

some of the gaps. This season is going well with The Grecians being well in the mix for the majority of the campaign so far whilst they are the division’s top scorers with 40 goals, that’s five more than any other team. Matt Jay and Ryan Bowman are joint top scorers, each finding the net nine times so far this season.

Andy Williams

In the reverse fixture in midDecember, Town came away from St James Park with a very memorable 2-1 victory with goals from Brendan Kiernan and Jack Muldoon either side of a Jake Taylor strike.
