SIMON WEAVER

ABoxing Day match is always one which stands out when the fixtures are released all those months ago and we are all really looking forward to what promises to be a great match up against Grimsby.

Firstly, I hope you and your loved ones had a fantastic Christmas and enjoyed the opportunity to spend time with those closest to you.

For us, we were disappointed that we have been unable to get back out there after a fantastic performance and result against Rochdale, however, player and supporter safety must come first.

Today is our first of three matches in the next seven days and we know we will have to be in peak physical condition to deal with those demands. While we may not have played, we have been training the lads hard to make sure that they do not lose any of their fitness due to a lack of matches. These games can prove to be very important in a campaign. We have a Yorkshire derby coming up and we want to go in to that match with a buzz about the place. The only way to do that is to get another victory on the board.

To achieve that we need to go out and play on the front foot and be attack minded but also be ruthless in our own box to keep the back door shut. We have watched a lot of video on Grimsby and we understand the qualities they possess. I know their manager Paul Hurst very well having been the last manager that I ever played under. He will insist on his team playing with energy and asserting themselves physically. He is an intelligent person who is well aware of what characteristics the fans of the club want and need to see. Grimsby have immense support and we will have to manage that volume of noise from the away support in the best way we can, by keeping calm and composed and

not getting too emotional and losing discipline. With the match being at our home ground we want to make that advantage count and put on a performance for you to cheer about.

As we have two matches remaining in 2022, we want to enter the New Year high in confidence and looking up the table. However, to be in a position to do that, we have to consistently reach the level of performance that we showed at Rochdale. The talent we have throughout our squad stepped up in that match, and with a busy schedule to come, we need that strength in depth for the second half of the season. Undoubtedly we didn’t have that back up strength last season and full credit must go to the Board who have ensured we have been equipped to cope with such drastic injuries throughout this season. At Rochdale we went behind but we showed the character and resilience to bounce back, create some great opportunities and got our rewards from that.

The full week of training has helped us to get some of the injured lads back involved and bolster the options we have available to us. Both Jack Muldoon and Alex Pattison have recovered from their knocks and have looked sharp in training. We also have Max Wright who has re-joined the group. Max is a player who was fantastic for us during the summer and we were really excited to add him to the squad. However, he was unfortunate that he picked up a long term injury which ruled him out of action for some time, so it’s great to see him back and have a player of his quality at our disposal. His energy and personality has really lifted the group.

Happy New Year when it comes!

JOSH FALKINGHAM

Iwould like to extend a warm welcome to The EnvrioVent for today’s Boxing Day action, I hope you and your family enjoyed a very special Christmas Day together. It is time to spend with those closest to you and hopefully you had the opportunity to do that.

It’s great to get back to playing football after what was an unexpected break since our last match against Rochdale. It was disappointing for us to miss out on the two fixtures given how well we played and the momentum we had built from our victory there.

These hurdles are part of football and for us, it’s about getting back to business and having the trying to make it three league wins in a row. While it may be frustrating, we have had a full week to prepare for the challenges which Grimsby bring.

In the Rochdale match, we conceded an early goal which was against the run of play. In times like that, it’s easy for heads to drop. However, we re-grouped quickly and stuck to our plan. We got the rewards from that, but I think the manner of the victory was a huge boost to our confidence.

Due to injuries and suspensions, a lot of lads were given their opportunity in the starting lineup, and I was pleased to see them take it with both hands. Sam Folarin, Josh Coley, Kyle Ferguson and George Thomson were all magnificent.

It was great for us to show the quality we have throughout the squad and with some players returning, the squad is strong going into the New Year.

We have to respect the quality which today’s opponents have across the board. However, with a Boxing Day fixture, at home, the lads are really looking forward to what will be a great occasion. From today, we have three fixtures in seven days, so the squad has been lifted seeing some of the injured lads coming back into training.

In preparation we have put a lot of work in to getting ready for the demands the next week will pose. The lads have looked bang on it in training, and I think we are ready to try and build on our positive results recently. This period is always an important one in the campaign, so going into it high in confidence is a massive boost.

Of course, every team in this league will be in a similar position. We have done a lot of work on Grimsby and their style of play; they are a very good side and it’s always a tough game against them. We will have to defend as a unit and take our chances when they come if we are to get another positive result.

I think it’s important that we enjoy these challenges when they come, we are in a good place as a squad and there is a determination to go into the new year in good form. We have two difficult away matches after this, so we want to make home advantage count with you right behind us.

Enjoy the match!

ISS. #13 - HTFC v GTFC

The opportunity to spend time with friends and family is what makes the festive period so special. This Christmas, for Town winger Tyler Frost the prospect of spending time with his loved ones holds an added meaning.

The 23-year-old moved North alone to sign a six-month contract with Yorkshire’s yellow and black during the summer transfer window. While this presents its challenges, Frost is delighted to be living the dream as a professional footballer.

“I have a young boy at home, that’s been tough. He is at a great age just now and has a bit of a personality. The way our schedule works, I am not back at home too often so I am missing out on little things like taking him to see Santa. However, playing professional football was the dream I had since I was young, it’s all about balancing the footballing side and the family side. It isn’t easy but a lot of people will be in the same situation where you have ups and downs but we have a great environment in training. That gives you a great opportunity to throw yourself in to work and forget about being away.”

Despite having signed for four clubs, Town is the first club for which the winger has had to relocate. This learning experience is a challenge which he has enjoyed.

“Coming here, I was moving a long way away from my family. I have never experienced that before and it has been challenging. However, I have been working hard to earn opportunities to play. That comes down to applying myself Monday to Friday and hoping the manager sees something in me.”

Despite his desire to play every week, Frost is determined to play a role in the team’s success in whatever way he can.

“I have a responsibility in this squad, if I am not playing I want to help where I can to prepare the players for the game that weekend. Everyone has to play their

part in some way and I am prepared to do whatever it takes to help the team. It’s great to be a part the squad, even if you aren’t playing. I just want the team to do well at the end of the day. If it is only to be six months or further, there are great lads here and good coaches so I want to see them do well.”

After signing a six month contract in July, Town’s number 19 has revealed he is not focused on his future, with the squad looking to build on their impressive performances in recent months.

“As a team we have more important things just now. We were in a run of bad form but we have really turned it around recently which is fantastic and I am focused on playing my role to help the team continue that. When I have played I think I have done okay but it’s just about being consistent. I am very grateful to be given the opportunity here. This is a league club and it gives me another opportunity to show what I can bring to a team.”

With a young family of his own, Frost paid tribute to the efforts made by his own family, in allowing him to pursue his dream.

“My family are really proud of me and they show that all the time. They have taken me here, there and everywhere while I chased the dream of being a professional footballer. My Mum, my Step-Dad and my Nan have been huge influences on my life.

harrogatetownafc.com

“My mum didn’t know how to drive and she learned how to drive so she could take me to football. It is a massive commitment to the parents as it is to the kids. The parent is left standing for 3-4 hours a week while the kid goes and does what they enjoy.”

At the age of nine, the winger was given an opportunity to represent his boyhood club Reading. Despite being unable to make an appearance in the club’s first-team Frost believes the club gave him a magnificent platform both on and off the pitch.

“I was at Reading from the age of 9. That was the club I supported growing up, I was a season ticket holder and it was a dream. I look back on my time there with fond memories. It definitely means a little bit more. A lot of people in my family supported the club and they were pleased for me. I would have loved to play for the club’s first-team but it’s gave me a great opportunity to become a professional footballer.

“When I was 14 the club moved me to a different school. I had to make a decision to leave a school where I was comfortable, in pursuit of becoming a professional footballer. My mum knew that was my aim but it was still a big decision to make. The

integration between the footballers and the school pupils was difficult but I was fortunate that I got on well with both groups. I actually met my best friend at that school. So the decision is definitely one which worked well for me.”

After signing a scholarship with the club aged 15, Frost joined both first-year and second-year scholar’s vying for positions within the squad. While previously, the aim of academy football was to improve players now there was a pressure to win. Reflecting on his time with the squad, this is an expectation which he enjoyed working to meet.

“Looking at the football, becoming a first year scholar was a massive step up. You are in a squad with the second year scholars as well and in that environment with that pressure it helped me to kick on. There was a pressure to win. Development was important but results are more so. If you weren’t good enough you are told and that was my first real experience of that passion to win. It was a great group to be a part of and the gaffer David Dodds helped me massively. We managed to put a run together in the FA Youth Cup and got to play Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. I’d say with the memories I made, that year is one of my favourite years as a footballer so far.”

@HarrogateTown harrogatetownAFC #ProudToBeTown HarrogateTownAFC 12

However, as Frost continued his rapid rise up the ranks within the Reading academy, it was his first match for the club’s U23 side which helped him realise the importance of first-team football.

“In my second year I made the step up to play U23s football. My first game at that level was against Portsmouth first team at Fratton Park in the FA Trophy. There was around 5,000 people watching, it was my first taste of anything close to first-team football and I loved it.”

Shortly after this occasion, Frost was given the opportunity to experience first-team football during a month loan spell to Havant and Waterlooville. The club handed him his senior debut and was where he scored his first senior goal, these memories allow the winger to look back with happiness.

“I went out on loan for a month and loved it, I scored on my debut and was playing first team football every week. At the time Havant were in the Conference Premiership and as soon as I heard of the possibility I was desperate to go and experience it. It was the next step for me (playing first-team football). I started against Hartlepool and scored after 12 minutes so it was the dream start. I felt on top of the world, there was a possibility I could have stayed there for longer but for whatever reason it didn’t happen. I look back on my time at the club with fond memories.”

While an extension to the loan was not agreed, the 23-year-old was keen to add to his first team experience. However, a serious injury sustained at the beginning of the following season meant that the wide-man was unable to achieve that aim.

“The next season, there was potential for me

to go out on loan within the Football League. However, in the first game of the season I picked up a really bad MCL injury. That injury stopped the loan move from happening and meant that Reading never really got to see me play first team football. That really set me back because before I was fully recovered Reading told me they wouldn’t be renewing my contract at the end of the season. It definitely came at the wrong time but that was something out with my control.”

However, the wideman paid tribute to the club’s medical staff who helped him to fully recover and begin to prepare for life after his boyhood club.

“Football is definitely impacted by timing and luck. You have to be at the right place at the right time but I was lucky that the physios helped me to recover and get a few games in to leave with a bit of game time under my belt. I scored two goals against Sunderland in my first game back and got invited to go up for a trial there. For me at that time it was about trying to find my break in to first-team football. Sunderland were interested in signing me up to U23’s football but that wasn’t what I needed to develop.”

After choosing to pursue first-team football once again, Frost left Reading during a period of uncertainty as the country exited a national lockdown. However, the pacey winger was delighted when the opportunity to join Crawley Town arose.

“I was lucky to get a couple of trials in before Covid hit. However, I was out of contract when we were coming out of lockdown and the finances in football took a massive hit so it was a bit of uncertainty on what would come next.

“The assistant at Crawley was the manager I had played under at Havant who knew me well. I went down there for a trial but after my first day we were already working on the contract. For me that was just what I needed. It was men’s football, I started very well, dipped and dropped out the team because of my performances. I had a lot going on personally, I had a child and probably took my eye off the ball a little bit. It’s probably the side that people from the outside don’t realise. We are real people with real lives and that is part of men’s football. I had to learn how to deal with that.”

“I managed to get between 40 and 50 appearances under my belt at first-team level which was pleasing for me. Looking at those performances, I want to improve my contributions in attack but that is part of growing and an aim which I want to achieve during my time at Harrogate Town”.

THE MEN IN CHARGE

Denis Metcalf 1988/89

In April 1988 Farsley Celtic’s manager, Denis Metcalf, was in line for the job at Town. He had good credentials having lead Farsley to runnersup in the NCEL Premier Division in 1986/87 and fifth in NPL Division One and West Riding County Cup success in 1983/84.

Current Town manager, Alan Smith, was to continue his role as General Manager but Metcalf demanded he would be coming with Coach Mervyn Beck or not at all. Town already had Graham Shepherd as Assistant Manager and Fergus Donaldson as Coach and the question was whether they could all work together. As he was unable to bring his coach, Metcalf eventually rejected Town’s offer.

For 1988/89 former Farsley Celtic manager Metcalf (player motivator) finally decided to join NPL Division One Town in the Summer with former Town player Gary Watson replacing him at Farsley. Alan Smith, however, began the season as ‘boss’ and Town opened with a 9-1 victory over Winsford United at Wetherby Road (after going behind) to head the table. As a result of the good start Smith won first manager of month for August but would now assume

the title of General Manager as Denis Metcalf took over as team manager at the start of September for the visit of Stockton in the F.A. Cup.

Unfortunately, it was a bad start for Metcalf with five out of six league defeats (his worst ever run in management) and Town plummeted from first to fourteenth position. However, after Metcalf brought in Mind you he had recently brought in Graham Gilderdale, Paul Stevenson and Glen Brazier from his former club, Town secured five wins in seven matches up to the end of November 1988. In early December, after a 3-0 victory over Alfreton Town, Metcalf quit after a short, turbulent 103 day spell in charge, leaving Town in tenth spot.

Players and officials were stunned by his resignation especially after results had improved but Metcalf said, ‘I was employed to manage the team but never had full control’. Donaldson stepped into the breach after Metcalf’s departure working alongside Smith. Metcalf managed Town for 23 games, winning 11, drawing two and losing 10.

ANOTHER ENGLAND CALL UP WITHIN OUR WALKING FOOTBALL TEAM

A huge congratulations to Steven Fort who has now played in 3 international tournaments representing England. With the highlight of his achievements playing in Malmo in November beating Sweden, Norway, France, and Denmark along the way.

At the age of 72, sport had always been high on the list of priorities, playing for numerous amateur football teams right up to the age of 50 until a ruptured Achilles tendon led to a brief break from activity.

Just over 20 years ago Steven was diagnosed with prostate cancer and after a period of recuperation, decided to get fit again and took up cycling, running and fellwalking. Football seemed all but a distant memory until some impromptu drinks in the garden with one of our members Paddy. Suggesting a way to become back involved with the beautiful game.

In Steven’s own words he wasn’t impressed by the idea but agreed to be polite and accept the invite, Steven duly arrived and was surprised by the energy, skill levels, enthusiasm and friendliness and was immediately hooked. Spending a lot of time in Spain these days, Steven plays for Calahonda but still represents Harrogate whenever he can.

It is such a pleasure to have members like Steven, knowing he is Proud To Be Town and flying the flag in Spain. We wish him the very best for his International call-ups in the future.

YOUTH ENGAGEMENT ROUND UP

National Citizen Service (NCS) this Autumn has seen young people from Harrogate take part in lots of different outdoor challenges, allowing them to bond with new people and create lasting friendships whilst gaining skills for the future. It was great to see them all braving the cold and pushing themselves outside of their comfort zone!

Also, over the past couple of weeks, we have been in and around our local community completing our exciting Christmas projects. It was great seeing so many familiar faces participate in festive games and activities at our Christmas Hut. Furthermore, we have been working alongside multiple charities such as Supporting Older People and Young Carers where our NCS Changemakers have been fundraising and collecting donations.

James Pocklington explains, “To see the change in the young people is truly amazing. They have taken responsibility, co-ordinated activities and can be extremely proud of themselves”.

Everyone at Harrogate Town AFC Community Foundation would like to wish you all the very best for the Festive period.

Dr Jason Jones will be seeing patients at The Duchy Hospital, giving time for concerns to be discussed. We also offer a comprehensive GP led Health Screening service.

I’m very happy and excited to be joining the team at The Duchy and providing some Primary Care services. Being based within the hospital will also give me access to all the hospital’s facilities, services and consultant colleagues. This should improve the patient journey if any secondary care referrals are needed.

Dr Jason Jones, General Practitioner

After a long break, Town U18s returned to League action on Saturday at home against Huddersfield Town and went down to a very frustrating defeat.

Town made the early running, testing Terriers stopper, Francis Hurl with a 20-yard drive inside the seventh minute before striker Elijah Samuels headed another effort wide moments later, and was then denied again by a full-length save. Town finally got a deserved opener in the 12th minute when a misplaced defensive header fell to Josh Brodella who passed to Finn O’Boyle who took one touch before firing past Hurl at close range.

Two efforts from corners were cleared off the line as Harrogate continued to make the running and then the flow of the game changed after the 20-minute mark.

Huddersfield found the equaliser on 22 minutes when a cross to the back post, reached Conor Falls who cushioned a volley into the far corner.

That goal gave the Terriers a foothold, and they scored the second minutes before the half time interval when good work down the right ended in a pull back from the dead ball line for Falls to finish into the corner for his second.

The second half had far fewer chances as both sides made substitutions, however the referee frustratingly waved away two very valid penalty shouts for Town – one after a collision between Hurl and Samuels and the second surrounding a poor challenge on Brodella.

Town continued to search for an equaliser and but for a great save right at the death by Hurl from an Alasdair Kerr shot – pushing the ball against the post - they would have got it and what would have been the very least they deserved.

Town: Mooney, M. Wilson, Moorby, Birmingham, Smalley, Taylor, Brodella, Lee, Samuels, O’Boyle, Liddle

Subs: Kerr, Nicholson, R. Wilson, Robinson

After hanging up his boots, he took over at Ilkeston Town alongside former Millers teammate Rob Scott, winning promotion to the Conference North. The duo took over at Boston United in July 2009, winning promotion to the Conference North before they left to join Grimsby Town in March 2011. The Mariners reached the play-offs on four consecutive occasions, before gaining promotion back to the EFL in 2016 with Hurst having taken sole charge.

Hurst moved on to Shrewsbury Town in October 2016, and saved the club from relegation from League One in his first season, before taking them to the play-off finals in 2018. He left to join Ipswich Town in May 2018, but left Portman Road in October after a poor start to the season. He joined Scunthorpe United in May 2019 but parted company with them in January 2020.

After joining Grimsby, he couldn’t save them from relegation to the National League, ending a five-year spell in the EFL but engineered the Mariners immediate return to the EFL last season via the play-offs.

‘LOVE FOOTBALL. PROTECT THE GAME’

To mark the new season, we want to make you aware of new measures being taken across all of football to ensure everyone can have a safe and enjoyable experience. We are supporting strong action from the FA, Premier League and EFL to tackle anti-social and criminal behaviours that put all of us at risk.

This reflects the seriousness of the risks to fans and staff – pyros can burn at 2000 degrees Celsius and cause lifechanging injuries, while entering the pitch endangers players, managers and match officials.

We know those who commit these illegal acts do not represent the majority of supporters. #LoveFootball #ProtectTheGame
