MANAGER’S NOTES
T HE M A N AG ER
SIMON WEAVER GOOD EVENING and I hope everyone is safe and well at home. I would like to welcome Michael Duff, his staff, players and officials who have made the journey up to North Yorkshire from Cheltenham today for this rearranged fixture from early January. Cheltenham are another really good team who were one of the pre-season favourites and who have been in the upper reaches of the table all season. They have had 10 days without a game and will be keen to get back out on the pitch this evening, so we need to be ready for another big challenge tonight. We know about their threats and that they are a very hard side to break down, so we all need to be on it, play to our strengths and be patient to get the result we want. Saturday’s win at Crawley was hugely deserved and a great three points. We knew it was going to be a battle as they’ve had some fantastic results at home this season. We came out the blocks fast and won the game in the first half and produced probably our best 45 minutes of football in the EFL so far, looking dangerous every time we went forward and very exciting to watch. We made it
harder for ourselves in the second half but you can’t expect to go away to Crawley and expect it to all go your way for the full 90 minutes. Will Smith’s sending off was really unfortunate, especially so soon after his return from a injury, but these things are sent to test us and we coped with it pretty well. We had to make a few points to the lads regarding the second half, but at the same time didn’t want to take the shine off the first half performance when we were exhilarating and so exciting. There’s lots of positive energy and a growing belief in the camp and we felt that spark in training with the boys gelling really well. We need that to continue as no-one wants it to be a lacklustre second half to the season. We’ll take what we’ve learnt from the first half of the season with a better squad of players, more energy about us and move forward very positively. Enjoy the game!

CAPTAIN’S NOTES
T HE C A P TA I N
JOSH FALKINGHAM TONIGHT IS ANOTHER TOUGH FIXTURE with Cheltenham Town making the trip up to The EnviroVent Stadium. They’ve been up at the right end of the table all season and we saw how they played against Manchester City in the FA Cup, they were really impressive. We know how hard it’s going to be to get the three points but we hope to put in a strong collective performance and continue the good little run that we’re on at the minute. Our performances have been getting better week by week, and when we do start performing how we want to, results will come like they have done. The wins are vital but it’s great to see the performance levels at a really good standard as well. Everybody is really pleased and we’re just looking to build on that. Throughout the season, we’ve tried not to put ourselves under too much pressure. We know what it takes to win games in this league and we’ve never been too far away when we haven’t picked up the three points. It’s about believing in getting results. Back to back wins is something I’ve mentioned before and it can
make a big difference in moving up the table. The win at Crawley last time out was a really good performance, particularly in the first half. We’ve had some good displays and Crawley were a side who had beaten Leeds United in the FA Cup, a game I watched with great interest. They have really great individuals who caused Premier League players problems, so to get the three points on the road was a great feeling. I’ve said before how getting that first goal can help so much with confidence, and the first half especially, was a really solid team performance and it showed. Part of those improved performances have been down to the January arrivals. It’s given us a huge lift in training and in games and the new lads have all done a great job. When they put the performances in like they have recently, it helps everybody and helps us get those cruscial wins. Long may that continue.

coaches at Wednesday. Kevin Fogg coached me at United and Wednesday and he’s really close to my family and still rings me now. He’s been massive in my development.” At 16, Kirby signed a two-year scholarship with Sheffield Wednesday but it only took a couple of months for the midfielder to show he was worth more. After playing a few games for Wednesday’s u21 side, Kirby had won himself his first professional deal at the age of just 17, in what came as a “surprise” to The Owls new addition. At the time, Carlos Carvalhal was the manager and he led Wednesday to the playoffs in back to back seasons between 2015 and 2017. Kirby was occasionally involved with the first team, training with the likes of Gary Hooper, Steven Fletcher and Barry Bannan to name a few. It was a big step up for the Barnsley lad who was almost in awe of those around him. THE YOUNGSTER’S first memory of football is when he was five years old, a game in which he scored his first-ever goal, albeit in the wrong net. Although a comical moment, it showed a trait in Kirby from the start. A desire to kick a football. “I loved football as a kid, it was what I was thinking and doing every day,” Kirby says with a passion. “Phones still weren’t a big thing when I was a kid so I’d go out with my dad and just start passing it around, doing tackles etc.” Kirby looked at the likes of Roy Keane, Paul Scholes and Steven Gerrard for inspiration, seeing them as the midfielders who could “do it all”. Like many professional footballers, Kirby went through the academy process at a young age. He was scouted by Sheffield United at the age of eight and spent five years with the Blades before being released. However, there was no time for the youngster to get down as he was very quickly snapped by The Blades local rivals, Sheffield Wednesday. It was at Wednesday where Kirby settled and stayed for nine years. Kirby admits that although he had done well in his academy days, there were times where he didn’t have the confidence to match his technical ability. “There were times I didn’t really believe in myself, especially at Sheffield United. That’s probably been one of my biggest downfalls. When I was released I had to rediscover my confidence in my ability to get a contract elsewhere. I had some really good
“For a 17-year-old to go into training with players like that, it was nerve-wracking,” he confesses. “I had to grow up fast being in that first-team environment. When you make a mistake, they’re on to you. It’s not like in the under 18s where you go and try again. You had to be brave and show what you had about you. I did score a half volley right into the top corner which was a standout moment in training but I don’t think it went down too well as they just played on.” As well as mixing with the first team, Kirby was a prominent figure in both the under 18s and 21s set up, captaining both sides. Although still far away from his senior years, Kirby already has aspirations of one day becoming a first-team captain and looks forward to one day being able to help develop the next generation of talent. “I see myself as a leader and although I’m not the most vocal, I feel like I lead by example in other ways such as hard work and energy. When I’m older, I want younger players to be able to learn that from me.” At Harrogate, he has the perfect role model to look up to in Josh Falkingham. Kirby explains how he’s already benefiting from playing alongside the Town skipper. “When you’re the captain of a team everyone looks up to you. With Falkingham, he’s helped me a lot already. He puts his arm around me and tells me what I should be doing in certain situations and what he’d do.” 15
Before his move to Town this summer, Kirby was still working his way through The Owls’ set up. The midfielder was continuing to impress the right people at Wednesday and after making the first team bench for several fixtures, he made his firstteam debut in April 2018. It was at Hillsborough in front of 25,000 fans in what was a “shiver up my spine” moment. Kirby would go on to make three more appearances before an agreement was made between himself and the coaching staff for the youngster to go out on loan to gain Football League experience. The midfielder went to Macclesfield Town for the 2019/20 season but as the season progressed, financial difficulties mounted for the club and it made for a tough season for all involved. Making over 30 appearances for his loan club, Kirby had become a popular figure with the fans with his passionate performances standing out. However, many of his teammates faced an uncertain future with Macclesfield unable to pay wages during parts of the season. With an unhappy dressing room, it put Kirby in a difficult position. “It’s not something I’d want to experience being on contract with a club in that position,” he says. “It took its toll on the changing room. The lads knew the money would come but it was a matter 16
of when. It was hard. It got to the stage where lads didn’t want to train, which affected me and lads didn’t want to play which cost us points. What went through my head at times was ‘What am I doing here?’. I wanted to be in a team where all the lads were up for it and in fairness, they were up until it got really bad. You never knew what you were going to get from the team with their minds potentially elsewhere.” It got so bad for Macclesfield that at one point, the club named a side with five loanee players and six from their college set up for an FA Cup tie against non-league outfit, Kingstonian. Kirby captained the financially stricken club in what was a miserable day as The Silkmen lost 4-0. At the end of the curtailed season, a point deduction saw Macclesfield drop into the relegation zone and they were relegated to the National League. The bad news kept coming as by September 2020, Macclesfield had been expelled from the National League and was wound up by the High Court. When Kirby heard the news that his former club was to dissolve, he was devastated. “I was gutted when they folded. It was a proper community club which the fans got behind. It was heartbreaking to see the supporters lose their club.” For Kirby, when the 2019/20 season ended he
CONNOR KIRBY
headed back to Sheffield Wednesday, although he had no idea what was next for him. Kirby explains how he was invited to a Zoom call, where he was told the news that he was set to be released from the club he had spent almost a decade with. Understandably so, it hard Kirby hard.
something the midfielder is wanting press on with.
“It sent my head all over the place. It was the middle of the pandemic and I didn’t have a club. I thought I’d done enough on loan to get a decent move so was in contact with alot of teams. However, they’d say they were interested but then it would just go silent. Mentally for me, it was quite tough as I started questioning whether I was good enough.”
As one of the few Town players with Football League experience, Kirby knows how competitive this division is and he believes the realistic goal for the club should be to retain status in League Two.
Fortunately for Kirby, the offer from Harrogate was one he liked the look of and he “snapped up” the opportunity to join Simon Weaver’s side. Kirby had seen Town play so well in the National League Play-Offs and he was keen to be part of the club’s next chapter. A gruelling first training session was made harder for Kirby as he hadn’t played football for over five months but once up to speed, he was able to compete with his new teammates. As a new signing, Kirby wasn’t expecting to go straight into the starting XI, especially since the squad had done so well. But in recent weeks, however, Kirby has started to get more game time and began to nail down a spot in Weaver’s line-up,
“It’s tough to break into the squad straight away. I just wanted to play games and it was tough not playing as much as I’d have liked at the start. I’ve been patient, kept my head down and carried on smiling which has got me a run in the team now.”
“The league can go any way,” Kirby explains. “It’s a very competitive league and more so than it was last year. It was spread quite quickly last campaign but this season, one win or loss can move you quite far in the table at the moment. Because of that, we need to be at it every game.” Football is an unpredictable sport and results across all the divisions have shown that yet again this season. However, for Kirby, he can give one certainty to Town fans. “I’ll work hard every time I put the Harrogate shirt on. It’s a club on the rise and I want to have the success the lads have had in the last few years. I want to move up the divisions and I think it’s definitely doable with Harrogate. If you look at the table, we’re not too many points off the playoffs now. A good run with back to back wins can make a huge difference and we should be aiming high.”

TONIGHT’S OPPOSITION
CHELTENHAM TOWN
Until recently it was thought that Cheltenham Town was founded in 1892, but recent evidence has suggested the club’s origins are five years earlier. Albert Close White returned from college in London where he had discovered association football, and trials were held at East Glos Cricket Ground in 1887; the birth of Cheltenham Town. The club played for 30 years in local leagues.
Cheltenham’s red and white colours were adopted in the 1930s, gaining the nickname of ‘The Robins’, and in 1932 they moved to Whaddon Road, whilst turning professional and joining the Birmingham Combination. By 1935 the club had reached the Southern League where they would spend the next 50 years. But for one season in the Premier Division in 1968-69, the Robins stayed in Division One till 1977, and in 1979 only just missed out on promotion to the newly formed Alliance Premier League (aka The Conference). It wasn’t until 1982-83 that Cheltenham finally made it to the Conference, spending seven seasons there, however relegation came in 1992. Promotion was finally achieved again in 199697, and Steve Cotterill led the club to second place finish in the Conference. In 1998-99 the ultimate was achieved as The Robins won the division and with it promotion to the Football League for the first time.
Season 2001-02 saw promotion to League One via the play-offs however their stay in the third tier lasted just a season. They returned in 200506 though, again via the play-offs and managed to keep themselves in League One for the next three seasons, but were relegated in 2008-09. They lost in the play-offs in 2011-12 and 201213, before losing their football league status in 2014-15. Despite numerous summer changes Cheltenham won the National League at the first attempt and have since finished 21st, 17th and 16th. Last season they finished fourth on PPG and after a 2-0 win at Northampton Town in the first leg of the play-off semi-final must have fancied their chances at making the Wembley final, but a 3-0 defeat in the second leg saw the dream ended. This season the Robins are flying high again in League Two after the disappointment of not being promoted last season. As a team they are built on a solid defence that is difficult to break down, and they are quick on the attack. Currently lying eighth in the table, Michael Duff’s side have kept 11 clean sheets, and have found the back of the net 34 times. What’s more is those goals have been shared between 12 players, and it is Andy Williams who leads the way with seven league goals.

For more details about Harrogate Town AFC Community Foundation, or to get involved, please email community harrogatetownafc.com
Town players do their bit contacting fans... Over the month of January we set players and staff a task to call up some of our supporters and see how they were getting on. We understand the challenges being faced at the moment away from football and feel that as a Club and Community Foundation that we have a role to play. These conversations weren’t off a script, just a chance to hear a friendly Harrogate Town AFC voice. As challenges continue for everyone in society we will look at more ways to keep the connection with supporters who might be feeling isolated in 2021.
Harrogate Town AFC’s #TeamTalk reminder Just a reminder that our next Team Talk (in partnership with the EFL and Mind) will be taking place on Zoom, 7pm on Thursday 25th February 2021. We are busy booking in our next special guest, if you want join, please email community@harrogatetownafc.com to book a place. The whole purpose is to urge supporters to talk and stay connected and keep the conversation going around mental health. We will feature ways to overcome the challenges we face and how we can increase our mental health.
National Citizen Service (NCS) growth As previously mentioned, we are thrilled to be delivery partners for the Harrogate region for NCS. This is a huge opportunity for the Community Foundation to grow and a chance for the Harrogate Town AFC brand to be seen across the area. Founded on the principles of social cohesion, social engagement and social mobility, NCS aims to make a life-changing difference to young people and how they approach life after school (something that can be daunting for even the most confident teens). We are currently recruiting for an experienced NCS Manager to help us delivery a phenomenal NCS Programme. Iain Service explains, ‘The new role is absolutely key to establishing ourselves as an outstanding delivery partner for NCS in the local area. Made possible by the EFL Trust, this role allows us to grow as a Foundation and add fantatsic experience to our team’. Recruitment is underway, with more details found on our website at www.htafcinthecommunity.co.uk

Leyt on O rient SATURDAY 13TH JANUARY 2021 SKY BET LEAGUE TWO, 3PM
Danny Johnson
After winning the National League title in 2018-19 to return to the EFL after a two-year absence, the Summer of 2019 and the subsequent season last term was obviously a very difficult time for Leyton Orient with the passing of manager, Justin Edinburgh. Under interim manager Ross Embleton, who was given the job permanently halfway through last season, the Club continued remarkably well considering and finished a respectable 17th in what was a very challenging first season back in the EFL. This season Orient sit just outside the play-off positions, but consistency has been a bit of an issue with the O’s losing as many as they’ve won. With a mix of experience and youth in the squad, 38-year-old Jobi McAnuff pulls the strings in midfield, whilst up front, ex-Town trialist Danny Johnson, has scored an impressive 14 goals so far this season including bagging a hattrick in the reverse fixture in November at Brisbane Road.

To date, Town’s 3-0 defeat in London that day remains our biggest league defeat of the season so far on the road. Jobi McAnuff
