THE BOSS’S NOTES

T HE M A N AG ER

SIMON WEAVER I WOULD LIKE start by wishing everybody a Happy Easter and by welcoming Darrell Clarke and the staff and players of Port Vale to the EnviroVent Stadium this afternoon. With only eight games remaining it is imperative now that we finish the season as well as we possibly can. Individual performances will help decide the squad places for our FA Trophy final next month and beyond into next season. We are looking for the group to continually perform in training and games with a drive to succeed. We’ve learnt so much this season and whilst most games have been decided by such fine lines there are recurring themes that crop up and we have to get better at both sides of the game. We aren’t massively short in any area but then we aren’t in the top three either and we are hungry to improve. We were disappointed to lose Simon Power last week to a hamstring injury that will now keep him out until pre-season. It’s a real shame for Simon as he’s been excellent for us since arriving at the club. We will look after him however and ensure he returns stronger than ever.

Today we face an experienced Port Vale team and Darrell Clarke, their manager, has made an instant impact since joining them from Walsall. This game will be another tough encounter. Every game is hard fought at this level. Not many games have been technically well above what we saw in the National League but fewer mistakes are made by teams and even more percentage football is played. As a result of this war of attrition, you have to be focussed throughout and be prepared to grind out results. It’s a really interesting time as there’s still a lot at stake in the final month of the season. We will work hard today to gain a positive result and make every Town supporter’s Easter that much better. Enjoy the game!

Simon

T HE C A P TA I N

JOSH FALKINGHAM FIRST OFF, on behalf of everyone at the club, I’d like to say a big congratulation to Rebecca Welch who today becomes the first female referee to be appointed to an EFL match. She’s worked incredibly hard for this and fully deserves the role.

We have to finish the season strongly and make sure it’s enjoyable from now until the end of the campaign. If we finish in the top 10, we can then definitely say it’s been a good first season in League Two.

If we focus on our last few results, there’s no denying it’s been a disappointing period for us and not a run we predicted or felt was coming. It’s just been frustrating as we probably haven’t done enough to win the last few games but at the same time on a whole, we probably haven’t done enough wrong to lose them.

We want to finish on high and the trip to Wembley is another thing to look forward to. We want to improve, we want to get better and win games and competitions. The aim is to keep moving forwards.

From the recent good run of form, we felt we’d put ourselves in a position to be within touching distance of the play-offs and we were looking to take the opportunity. After the last few results though, maybe that’s one step too far. It does feel like some of the hard work we’ve done in the last couple of months has now come undone, that’s the honest and general feeling in the camp. When we’re sat in the dressing room, we’ve not been pleased as the whole group wants to keep getting better and achieve more. Many might say that to stay up or finish mid table would be enough, but this team has been in playoffs season after season and I think that’s made the last few results even more frustrating.

We know first-hand how beneficial momentum can be and if we can finish this season on a high, then it can only help us going into the campaign next season. We have Port Vale today and it was a tough point that we picked up against them earlier in the season. Like every game, we know we’re going to have to work extremely hard and do our jobs properly to come out with the right result. If we don’t concentrate throughout the 90 minutes it’ll cost us. It’s been our Achilles heel this season and it’s something we’re working on to put right.

FROM THE BOARD

SUP P ORT ER L I A ISON OF FI C E R

PHILL HOLDSWORTH SINCE MY APPOINTMENT as Supporter Liaison Officer (SLO) at HTAFC we have had a very interesting season both on and off the pitch. Having gone through and remaining in a series of pandemic lockdowns at a time when making connections with both fans and the club was paramount, it couldn’t have been harder, but not impossible. With the increased use of technology and social media one of my first tasks was to meet with the Supporters Club Committee to introduce myself, the role and ideas for the future. We had a great meeting which has served us well. With the Wembley date for The Buildbase FA Trophy final and Vase final being announced as the 3rd of May - extreme disappointment from fans of all clubs involved on the day, I started a petition asking the FA to consider the following options: a) Make the day a test date, to allow fans in, b) Combine last season and this season on 22nd and 23rd May or c) Change the date altogether to allow fans in. So far, the petition has 1,189 supporters and still rising. It’s been supported by all the clubs’ fans involved in the finals and its reached fans around the world. Who would imagine Vietnam or Kuala Lumpur getting involved. The petition has also reached Parliament and the issue has been raised twice in Prime Ministers Question Times. I met with our local MP Andrew 8

Jones and learned that support is high. Let’s hope that the fans have been listened to and The FA recognise this by agreeing alternative arrangements. As part of my role, I’m required to connect with the SLO’s of other clubs and build connections there. To date I have had conversations with Leeds United, Sheffield United, Doncaster Rovers, Wigan Athletic, Cheltenham Town, Bradford City and Tranmere Rovers. My plan is to work my way through the League Two Clubs so that come next season when hopefully fans can attend matches, we will be able to influence an improved home and away experience for all fans. A further two developments happening and in the process of happening are, writing the job description for and the recruitment of a supporter liaison team, which is almost complete. And the development of a Customer Charter brochure that covers all policies, guidance, facilities, security, information on hospitality and much more for both home and away fans. A one stop-shop for all you need to know that will take time but will be worth it in the end. I would like to end with a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has supported me!

MELVIN MINTER

MELVIN MINTER Becoming a professional footballer but not the traditional way... That’s how Town goalkeeper Melvin Minter has done it. From being a teaching assistant to rubbing shoulders with Jimmy Bullard and Anthony Joshua, this is Melvin Minter’s extraordinary journey to Harrogate Town. By Henry Whitaker Born in Tottenham, Minter was introduced to football by his Grandma who used to take him to his local sports club not too far from Spurs’ old stadium White Hart Lane. He grew up in an area of North London which he describes as “a warzone at times”. It was a case of avoiding the wrong groups of people and doing his best to keep on the straight and narrow. Minter joined his first football team in secondary school and was in between the sticks from the off. He went to an all-boys school that had a heavy focus on sport and it meant Minter was surrounded by kids his age who had that same competitive nature. Although very competent in goal, Minter never had interest from footballing academies until very late on in his teenage years. It didn’t stop his

ambition though and he recalls and careers day talk helping him to focus on what he wanted. “I’ll never forget the conversation I had with a career advisor after finishing my GCSE mock exams. She told me what steps I needed to take to become a pro footballer and that was the first time I realised what was required to pursue what I wanted. Something was telling me football was always the path for me.” At 15-years-old, Minter finally got a trial at a professional team, Oxford United. He joined on an extended school boys contract and it was an opportunity for the London lad to show his skills and earn a scholarship. Unfortunately for the young keeper, he was unable to do enough to earn the contract and instead dropped down into Non-League football.

13

PLAYER IN FOCUS

Minter does however state that the rejection from Oxford was something he needed if he was going to take the next step. “It was demoralising as it was the first time I had experienced a professional environment and trained every single day,” he explains. “I was focused on what I wanted to do and thought I had done well enough to earn a scholarship but sometimes in life, things don’t work out. It opened my eyes to the wider world,” Minter adds. “I was naive when I was younger and just thought things would come to me and I’d get another club straight away. When that didn’t happen it opened my eyes.” Minter joined at the time Conference South side Hayes and Yeading and did a very good job for the London side. He played for the under 18s and reserve side which earned him a call up to England’s School Boys team where he travelled to Italy for an international tournament and played against the likes of China and Romania.

14

This was a confidence boost for Minter and he was now “solely focused” on making it as a professional. It was all going to plan as well, as Brentford then snapped Minter up, joining The Bees as a third-year scholar. However, it was a unique scenario as Minter was too old to play in the youth teams and so instead played with the under 21s, a team of players who all had professional contracts. When his scholar contract came to an end Minter was released and that made it two releases in three years for the goalkeeper. “It was the hardest time for me as my mentality wasn’t where it needed to be,” Minter admits. “It was a wake-up call. I needed to realise what I really wanted to do and how was I going to sustain it. At that time, I was more focused on getting there and then once I had it, I didn’t do the things which had gotten me there. I needed the mentality that I’d never want to stop working and wanting to get better.”

MELVIN MINTER Now 20-years-old, Minter went on to join Hendon FC who were in step three of Non-League football. It was his first experience of playing the men’s game and it was a case of play well or get dropped. Minter explains how it was a “cut-throat experience” as he was in a changing room with grown men who had mortgages to pay. It was, however, also an opportunity for Minter to observe and learn from his older and wiser teammates who helped him manage the highs and lows of playing men’s football. It was a season where Minter didn’t play as much as he wanted and as he wasn’t prepared to sit on the bench, he opted to move onto Farnborough before Hanwell Town at 21-years-old. He made a half-century of appearances at Hanwell, became a fan favourite and won supporters player of the season. A season later, Minter moved up a division to play for Harrow Borough. In that campaign, he kept 15 clean sheets, won player of the year and supporters player of the year. The recognition earned him a trial with Yeovil Town but once again, he failed to earn a professional contract and it was yet another setback for the keeper.

of Nike, Puma and PlayStation in their four-year existence. With nearly half a million followers on Instagram and over 3.8 million likes on TikTok, they’re becoming a giant in football’s social media world. When Minter first joined in 2018, Rising Ballers were in their primitive days but it opened door after door for the goalkeeper. It started with Minter captaining Rising Ballers FC as they played against pro teams with scouts and agents all watching. During an in-house game, Minter was picked up by Soccer AM who were after a new goalkeeper to feature on their live show. He went on to do a shoot with Glen Murray, Adebayo Akinfenwa, Tubes, Wayne Bridge and Steve Sidwell and did well. Soccer AM then offered Minter the chance to feature on every live show. On top of this, he was involved with EA Sports who asked him to partake in video shoots playing FIFA with Anthony Joshua.

As well as playing Non-League football, for two years Minter had been working a full-time job as a teaching assistant as he could no longer afford to live just playing football. However, at 23-years-old, Minter gave himself one more shot at becoming a pro. “I told myself I had three years to make it and if it doesn’t work out then I stabilise myself,” he says. “It was a big risk but at 23, I felt like I still had something to offer if I gave it my all.” What happened next for Minter changed everything and put him in a spotlight he hadn’t been exposed to before. He was contacted by a brand called Rising Ballers. They’re a media platform and agency that give a huge amount of exposure to the next generation of footballers. They’ve worked with the likes of Phil Foden, Callum Hudson Odoi and Bukayo Saka to name a few, and partnered with the likes

15

PLAYER IN FOCUS Minter was ready to give up his work with Soccer AM but thankfully for him, a change of manager at the Watford club allowed the keeper to continue his new role. “I was trying to become a professional but the cards I was being dealt weren’t working for me,” Minter says. “Soccer AM wanted me on a full-time basis and at that moment, I was thinking maybe I would become an influencer on social media, like the F2 Freestylers but a GK version. That became my plan if football wasn’t to work out.” It was now March 2020 and Minter was set on working full time with Sky until a trial with Stevenage came about and they said they would sign the keeper on a pro deal. However, this happened just weeks before the first national lockdown and when that came into effect, it ended Minter’s hopes of that deal going through.

It was all happening for the young keeper from North London. He was now getting his big break but not how he expected. “I thought what was happening was an amazing opportunity. Meeting Anthony Joshua was a crazy experience. He was so humble and supportive. It was the same with Jimmy Bullard. He gave me a lot of love and support and he’s the same on and off camera, lots of energy and very supportive.” Minter was still playing Non-League football at this point, being Kings Langley’s number one. With the club located just outside of Watford, it was ideal for Minter who could do the gig with Soccer AM in the morning and then play football in the afternoon. However, King Langley’s manager had decided to not allow Minter to continue this routine. The keeper still had the aim of making it pro and knew being on Soccer AM wasn’t going to get him there.

16

“Something changed during the summer and they didn’t go through with it,” he explains. “That left me very disheartened and I thought to myself maybe that’s my last chance gone. I had now pretty much decided to go down the route with Soccer AM and when it was set to restart in September I’d be ready to do it. There were a lot of options in the National League South but I wanted to play full time. I didn’t want to have to juggle football and Soccer AM. It was to be one or the other.” The start of the 2020/21 season is now just around the corner and Minter gets calls from three clubs, Yeovil, Boreham Wood and Harrogate Town. At the start of the campaign, Town’s number one James Belshaw was out injured, leaving just Joe Cracknell as an eligible keeper. The Harrogate coaching staff got Minter and other keepers in for a trial to determine who would act as cover.

MELVIN MINTER With Covid regulations in place, Minter needed a negative test to train and a delay in getting his result nearly meant he missed his chance. Nonetheless, he managed to make the trip up to Yorkshire and was chosen to be Town’s new keeper.

Minter was on loan at Darlington earlier this season before being recalled by Town as cover for James Belshaw

“When I came for the trial, everyone was welcoming and cool. I noticed straight away the culture here that everyone is in sync in terms of being humble and hardworking. This was an environment I wanted to be part of. The first time having the name on the back of my shirt and signing that first deal were big, big moments. “Maybe a month or two prior, I never expected that to happen. I was grateful more than anything else.” The deal Minter signed was originally for a month and although the keeper describes that as a “bittersweet” moment, it made him more determined to have that contract extended. In October 2020, that hard work paid off as the Gaffer told Minter that he wanted him to stay for the remainder of the season. A moment of “relief” for the keeper. He now had security for the rest of the season and he could now focus on finding a loan move to play some first-team football. Two weeks after signing his extension, Minter made his way north to Darlington, joining on an initial month-long loan. Once he got his chance in the first team, he impressed and got his loan extended for a further month. A man of the match performance then followed against Telford in the FA Trophy and it got the Darlington fans excited as they could see the potential in their new keeper. However, football is a funny old sport and just as Minter was finding his groove, his loan was cut short following a knee injury to Joe Cracknell just after Christmas.

Since returning, Minter has been an integral part of Town’s goalkeeping union, part of a family within the Harrogate Town family. Minter has aims of becoming a number one at a Football League club in the future, as well as representing Ghana’s international team, something he’s had early discussions about. With a cool head and a belief in the process, the keeper is optimistic about what the future holds. “Goalkeepers can play until 40 years of age so I feel like I’m at the start of my career. I’ve got a lot to learn and the aim for me is to play professionally and represent my country of heritage. That, and to play as high as I can. I’ve just got to keep on working.”

TODAY’S OPPOSITION

PORT VALE Formed in 1876, and the prefix ‘Burslem’ was added to the club’s name when they moved to the town in 1884. They were founder members of Football League Division Two in 1892 and after failing to gain re-election in 1896, they returned two years later before Burslem Port Vale resigned in 1907 due to financial problems. The ‘Burslem’ was dropped and they returned to the Football League in place of Leeds City in 1919 after which Vale established themselves in the Football League winning the Third Division (North) Championship in 192930 and finishing fifth in Division Two in 1931 which remains the club’s best ever finish. Port Vale hold the record for the most years spent in the Football League without ever playing in the top flight. Relegation back to the Third Division came in 1936 and Vale were moved between the North and South divisions for the next 18 years due to their central location in the Midlands. In 1950 the club moved to Vale Park, and in 1953-54 Vale were promoted to Division Two but were relegated three years later straight down to become founder members of the Fourth Division. Then followed many years of yo-yoing between the bottom two tiers, until in 1989 they won promotion via

the play-offs to Division Two, competing in the second tier for the first time in 32 years. That lasted until 1991-92 when they were relegated. Promotion was achieved again in 1994 and in 1995-96 they reached the Anglo-Italian Cup Final at Wembley losing 5-2 to Geona. In May 2000, Vale were relegated to the Second Division (League One) where they stayed until dropping to League Two in 2007-08. Despite going into administration in 2011-12, Vale were promoted at the end of the 2012-13 season and remained in League One until 2016-17 when they were relegated on the final day. After an eighth place finish last season, hopes were high this campaign and it started well with the Valiants sat in the play-off positions until a disastrous November in which they lost all five of their league games and then six wins since, has seen them drop to the bottom half of the table. John Askey was relieved of his duties in January, with Danny Pugh taking interim charge before Darrell Clarke was brought in from Walsall as manager on 15th February. After two draws and a loss in the first three games under Clarke, Vale have picked up three wins on the bounce to relieve any relegation fears and are preparing nicely for next season.

LEAGUE TWO ROUND UP

WEEKEND ROUND-UP

A LOOK OVER SATURDAY’S GAMES IN LEAGUE TWO by Mark Walker, PA Media

Adam May celebrates his last-minute winner at Carlisle

Adam May’s last-minute goal sealed Cambridge United a 2-1 win at Carlisle United and sent them back to the top of the table. Substitute May snatched all three points for the U’s after Carlisle striker Lewis Alessandra had cancelled out Paul Mullin’s first-half opener. Mullin set a new club goalscoring record for Cambridge as his 25th league goal of the season eclipsed their previous best set by David Crown 35 years ago.

Gary Bowyer’s first game in charge of Salford City ended in a 1-0 defeat at Exeter, City who halted a run of three successive defeats thanks to Matt Jay’s solitary first-half strike.

Overnight leaders Cheltenham Town slipped to a third league defeat in five matches, losing 1-0 at Morecambe, for whom Liam McAlinden scored the only goal midway through the first half. Cheltenham are two points behind Cambridge with a game in hand, while Morecambe closed to within a point of the automatic promotion places. Tranmere Rovers’ 1-1 home draw against Mansfield Town was enough to lift them into the top three, above fourth-placed Bolton on goal difference. Kaiyne Woolery’s first-half strike for Tranmere was cancelled out by Stephen Quinn’s second-half volley for the Stags. Bolton Wanderers extended their unbeaten run to 13 games as Eoin Doyle’s 16th goal of the season clinched a 1-0 win at promotion rivals Forest Green Rovers. Wanderers climbed above Forest Green in the table, while only five points separate the top six sides. At the other end of the table, Southend kept their survival hopes alive by securing a 1-0 win at Harrogate Town, courtesy of Ashley Nathaniel-George’s second-half effort. The Shrimpers remain second-bottom, but moved to within three points of safety. Harrogate have lost their last three matches, but are 13 points clear of the bottom two. Barrow sit one place and three points above Southend after they went down to a late penalty in a 2-1 defeat at Stevenage. Calvin Andrew’s header cancelled out Elliott List’s second-half opener for Stevenage, but Luke Norris converted an 87th-minute spot-kick as Barrow slipped to back-to-back defeats.

Teenager Kian Scales scored his first professional goal and Andy Cook headed the winner as Bradford City won 2-1 at Colchester United. Scales’ curling finish into the top corner was cancelled out before half-time by Frank Nouble’s header before Cook, on loan from Mansfield, notched his fifth goal in eight games for the Bantams. Tom Conlon, Nathan Smith and David Worrall were all on target for Port Vale in their 3-1 win at Crawley Town, for whom Ashley Nadesan headed a firsthalf equaliser. Conor Wilkinson’s third goal in as many games and Dan Kemp earned Leyton Orient a 2-1 win against Oldham Athletic, who had pulled one back through Alfie McCalmont, while Caolan Lavery rescued Walsall a point at Grimsby, Town who had gone in front through James Hanson.

Leyton Orient

Josh Falkingham challenges Danny Johnson in the game in November

Tuesday 13th April 2021 - League Two, 7pm Summer 2019 was a very difficult time for Leyton Orient with the passing of Justin Edinburgh, and so soon after them returning to the EFL after a two-year absence, but the club continued remarkably. Ross Embleton who worked with the squad under Edinburgh took over and lead the O’s to a commendable 17th-place finish in their first season back in the EFL last season. This season, the O’s have suffered from inconsistency more than anything, where runs of wins have often been followed by runs of losses meaning they haven’t been able to challenge for the top positions. Following a dip in form and a run of seven games without a win in January and February, the club parted company with Embleton and placed Jobi McAnuff in interim charge feeling that the play-offs were still within reach. The change has had a positive effect with the O’s

unbeaten in five including winning three on the bounce going into the Easter weekend and closing within four points of the play-offs. The clubs have met a number of times in recent seasons with Town yet to beat the Londoners and in the reverse fixture in November, the O’s won 3-0 courtesy of a hattrick from former Town trialist, Danny Johnson. To date this is Town’s heaviest away defeat of the season. This is a rearranged fixture following the initial postponement of the match in February due to a frozen pitch.

ON THE ROAD

Bolton Wanderers

Saturday 10nd April 2021 - League Two, 3pm Bolton Wanderers’ fall from the top has been well documented, but the fact that this historic club is still in existence is the saving grace. Back-to-back relegations have seen The Trotters drop from the Championship to League Two, with the club now competing in the fourth tier for the first time since 1988 which was also the only season Bolton had competed at this level in their history. In the summer Ian Evatt left Barrow to become head coach, but it wasn’t straightforward for Wanderers early on and they found themselves 19th at the start of February. There were a few changes off the pitch including Evatt’s job being changed from Head Coach to Manager and a mini overhaul of the squad followed in January, welcoming eight new faces to the University 42

of Bolton Stadium. This has seen a remarkable turnaround over the second half of the season. Since losing to Tranmere on January 23, Wanderers have gone unbeaten and picked up 11 wins out of 13 games, which leaves them just outside the automatic promotion places on goal difference. In early October, Bolton inflicted a first ever league defeat on Town, winning 2-1 at the Keepmoat. Eion Doyle gave Wanderers an early 11th-minute lead before Nathan Delfouneso extended the lead soon after half time. Despite George Thomson’s reply in the 61st minute, Bolton held on to take the points.
