THE GAFFER

SIMON WEAVER Good afternoon and welcome to the EnviroVent Stadium for today’s Sky Bet League Two contest with Colchester United. We can expect a really tough encounter against a side who have picked up some impressive results in recent weeks, including victories against Port Vale and Tranmere who both currently occupy play-off spots. After a poor performance and result against Leyton Orient in our last home game, it was a relief to get back to winning ways last Saturday and I thought the lads put in a really honest shift. We showed the required energy and graft needed at this level to be competitive and to also come away with the maximum points. There’s no easy game in this division but we had a lot at stake to win that game and I’m glad for the lads that we got through. It's been a hard time for everyone in the last few weeks but response from the group leading up to the Scunthorpe game was superb. We’ve lost key players to injury and things haven’t gone for us at times. We’ve had performances where we’ve played so well but come away no points or one point when it should have been three. After a little while of that, it’s expected that confidence will erode a bit as it’s the points on the board which determine our league position. However, I think that result can lift a bit of weight off everyone’s shoulders and the squad deserves credit for keeping the spirits high throughout this period.

4

I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

I understood that it was quite a nervy start against Scunthorpe and when you do take a few steps back, it allows the ball into feet. There were a couple times where they got through on goal and those are the moments when you need your goalkeeper, and the Ox is so good in those 1v1 situations. They’re pivotal moments in the game that probably don’t get the credit they deserve but it was a base for us to grow in confidence. The aim now is to rack up as many points as possible and we need to keep trying to put smiles on faces by scoring goals and playing entertaining football like we have done over the past few years. I’ve said before we’ll have sticky patches in the Football League because of the climb we’ve been on, but I said at half time to the players against Scunthorpe, let’s stick together. A team of moaners gets nowhere, so let’s back each other and have the fans with us all the way. Enjoy the game and thank you for your continued support.

THE SKIPPER

JOSH FALKINGHAM The last week or so of football has been a complete mixed bag for us following a draw, defeat and then victory. First was the 1-1 draw against Walsall where Calum Kavanagh got the last-minute equaliser and his first goal which was great for him and the team. I felt we deserved the three points from that game and were the better side, as in large parts of the game we were mounting the pressure and creating the clearer chances. The following Tuesday against Leyton Orient we were on the receiving end of a tough defeat, and it was a real hard one to take and one of the low points this season for players, staff, and the fans. The less said about that game the better but in terms of reactions, you have to pick yourself up and the result against Scunthorpe was massive for everyone. I was delighted and buzzing to see the lads get the win as going into the game there was a lot of pressure on the players’ shoulders, but huge credit to the lads as they stood up to the task and put in a great performance. As a confidence builder, it can be massive for us. We’ve said we want to kick on and finish the season strong and following the last result at home, we’ll be looking to put things right in front of our home fans.

is good, and they picked up another win last weekend against Tranmere. They’ll be looking to continue their run of results but what we’ve got to do is continue where we left off at Scunthorpe last weekend. The lads are really keen to show the fans the better side of us and we all know that on our day we can beat anybody in this league. Hopefully, the lads can get the result this Saturday that we’re all after and finish the season strong. Enjoy the afternoon and thank you for your support.

Falks

We look to Colchester now and they recently changed their manager and have seen an upturn in form and results. I watched their game against Forest Green just over a week ago and that was a really tough one for them, but their overall form

14 handy tips to help you reduce condensation in your home this winter...

Condensation occurs when warm air collides with cold surfaces, or when there's too much humidity in your home and creates water, water which collects as droplets on a cold surface when humid air is in contact with it. This is especially common in winter, when your central heating system comes on in the cooler hours of the mornings and evenings. While condensation itself isn’t a problem, if you do not treat it, it can cause damp patches to form where mould can grow and this can be bad for your health, as well as damaging the fabric of your home. If you are seeing lots of condensation in your home and are worrying about it developing into damp, a free home survey by one of our local ventilation specialists can help you get to the bottom of your problem.

14 WAYS TO REDUCE CONDENSATION IN YOUR HOME 1. Use pan lids when cooking 2. Close kitchen and bathroom doors 3. Dry clothes outdoors 4. Turn on the extractor fan when your using the shower 5. Ensure washing machine is correctly vented 6. Move furniture away from external walls 7. Install an extractor fan 8. Open windows when it's warmer outside 9. Wipe down cold surfaces 10. Ensure your property has adequate heating 11. Don't overfill wardrobes and cupboards 12. Stop using portable gas and paraffin heaters 13. Install double glazing, loft and wall insulation

NEED HELP WITH CONDENSATION, MOULD OR DAMP PROBLEMS? Adequate ventilation is essential to allow the moisture to escape from a property before it turns into condensation. Installing an energyefficient extractor fan in the kitchen and bathroom can improve the humidity levels and prevent condensation. An alternative approach would be to have a whole house ventilation system installed in your home, ATMOS® can provide a condensation-free environment and can help reduce the moisture levels throughout your home.

ARRANGE A FREE HOME SURVEY TODAY One of our local experts will contact you to learn more about your problems, offer free expert dvice and make recommendations for a permanent solution. During the free survey we will: • Assess any condensation, damp or mould problems in your property • Take readings of the relative humidity levels • Identify any underlying problems and make recommendations for a permanent solution Contact us today to book a free home survey.

Harrogate fundraiser Harry Wickham

Our last Saturday home fixture saw us welcome a very special guest to the EnviroVent Stadium in Harry Wickham, who at the end of 2020 raised £15,000 for Candlelighters, a charity who have been helping children with cancer and their families since 1976... by Henry Whitaker For Harry and his family, the charity holds a special place in their hearts as they’ve been hugely supportive for Harry’s 3-year-old cousin, Rosie, who was diagnosed with a spinal tumour in 2020. Two surgeries were needed to remove the vast majority of her tumour and Rosie has since undergone an intense 18-month chemotherapy regime. Harry told us why he wanted to run to raise money to help Rosie… “My mum asked me if I wanted to raise any money for charity and a few weeks after, I decided I wanted to do some running for Rosie, who has a poorly tumour. I was all prepared for the first few runs but got more and more tired with each run. I ran just short of 50km in December and January and raised £15,000. My target was £500 so I did a lot better than I expected. When I got over £500, I just said ‘wow’ because I was really surprised and every day the number was getting bigger.” The final of Harry’s 20 runs came in January 2021, and it saw the TV cameras, as well as people from all over the Harrogate support and congratulate him on his extraordinary achievement. It was a moment that made his family very proud of him, as his dad Philip Wickham explained. “There were a lot of family and friends there and it made for a really special day and made me and Sarah (Harry’s mum) very proud. We ran with

#ProudToBeTown I www.harrogatetownafc.com

Harry and that meant running on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day as well, it added up to a lot of running. What was nice about raising money for Candlelighters was that the money raised then helped fund family holidays to Centre Parcs for children currently undergoing treatment. Rosie and her brother Toby got to go with their mum and dad, which gave them such important family time together, which they otherwise would not have been able to have.” Candlelighters is a Leeds based charity and are so important for providing emotional, practical, and financial support, as well as hope for children with cancer and their families. The charity uses donations to invest in vital research to improve the outcomes and lives of children with cancer and on top of that, have a great presence in the Leeds Children’s Hospital, being on hand to provide crucial front-line support for the families. “Candlelighters have been amazing with Rosie and her family. For example, she was in hospital for the day recently and had been poorly over her clothes. Just like that they were able to give her box fresh PJs with ballerinas on, which made her so much happier,” Philip explained. “It’s the little things like that which Helen (Rosie’s mum) tells us about that relieves a lot of pressure that a parent feels and makes such a difference to their experience. The charity is truly amazing and to

know that Harry has raised quite a bit of money to help families going through such an awful experience is really nice. On Saturday 19th March, Town’s fixture at the EnviroVent Stadium was an opportunity for the Wickham family to get together and give Harry the day he deserved following his fundraising efforts. Harry got to play on the pitch with his teammates from Beckwithshaw, walk out with the Harrogate Town first team, have a kick about with Jack Diamond and Alex Pattison, and then had the big pressure of choosing the Man of the Match award. “I thought in the first half we played pretty well and dominated but in the second half we gave away a penalty,” Harry analysed. “We scored in the last 10 seconds to equalise though and me and my family celebrated like crazy. I gave man of the match to Mark Beck because he’s really tall and won the ball in the air a lot. He did everything but get the ball in the net,” Harry continued. “I really enjoyed the day, and I was really surprised that I got to have a kickabout with Alex Pattison and Jack Diamond." "My favourite moment though was walking out with the players. I walked out with Warren Burrell and we both waved at my family who were all sat in the main stand. I’d give the day 100 out of 100 marks.” For Philip and the family, they were blown away with how welcome they were made to feel and also the generosity, as the hospitality staff informed the family that 25p from each transaction would be donated to Candlelighters. “The whole day was awesome, and we all loved it,” Philip said with a big smile. “The way Harry was treated was out of this world and it couldn’t have gone any better. The biggest thing and the moment that got James (Rosie’s dad) was when the ladies behind the bar said they’d donate 25p from every transaction to Candlelighters, that got us all quite emotional, to be honest.

There is also positive news regarding Rosie. A message from Helen (Rosie’s mum) read out to us by Philip said: “Rosie has just completed week 75 of 81 of her 18-month chemotherapy regime. Rosie is due to finish her treatment in May and we’re looking forward to the break. We’ve had good weeks and really bad weeks from the side effects of the treatments, but she is such a resilient little girl, and the chemotherapy is working really well.” The family plan to have a big party in May, and then a first holiday abroad for Rosie in the summer, which Philip says will be a “really special” time. For more information on the incredible work that Candlelighters do, visit www.candlelighters.org.uk

“It was a phenomenal day, and all the staff were amazing. Joanne Towler and Sarah Barry were unreal, we couldn’t have asked for anything more. It was the day Harry deserved. It all started two years ago, and it’s been a long journey but a wonderful thing to do. There’s a photo where he walks out with Warren and he’s just looking up at him, it’s really nice.”

This was the first time Town had reached this far in the competition in their history and were disappointed to go out 2-0 in the replay at ‘Kingsway’ before a crowd of 672 after a 1-1 draw at Wetherby Road with a John Dembickjy goal in front of 705 fans. HARROGATE TOWN PARTNER WITH HARROGATE DISTRICT ‘WALK TO SCHOOL’ CAMPAIGN

Pupils, parents and staff from Willow Tree Primary School were joined by Harrogate Town, club mascot Harry Gator as well as Zero Carbon Harrogate for their Harrogate District Walk to School on Friday 25th March. Nearly 100 people took part in the walk from The EnviroVent Stadium to Willow Tree Primary School, arriving to the applause from parents, teachers and the Mayor and Mayoress of Harrogate. With carbon emissions in Harrogate 28% above the UK average, both Harrogate Town AFC and HTAFC Community Foundation want to play a key role in reducing air pollution in the district, as PE and School Sport Manager officer, Tom Blackburn, explained.

“We are very keen to raise awareness of environmental sustainability and to assist using the power for the football club. In seeing so many pupils, parents and staff get on board with the Walk to School initiative we hope habits can be changed. We’re really excited to be collaborating with Zero Carbon Harrogate and the Harrogate Climate Change Coalition. The Walk to school day marks one of the first events in our environmental sustainability plan that will see a number of community activities and events aimed at raising awareness of the effects of climate change.” Local environmental charity Zero Carbon Harrogate have been a key organiser in the district Walk to Schools and are keen to help lower the Town’s carbon

emissions by bringing together local businesses, community groups, individuals and politicians to work collaboratively in order to “transform the district”. “This is our fifth walk to school Friday that we do once a month and it’s great to see no cars in the school car park. Children are the future and so it’s so important we get them inspired,” Pete Turner from Zero Carbon Harrogate said. “It’s all about the future and it’s great to see so many participating in this event, including Harrogate Town. I know how important it is for the football club and they’re a key part to this town.” For Willow Tree Primary School, environmental issues are something that the staff and pupils are passionate about, with

each class having an “ecowarrior councillor” who pushes initiatives they want to get involved with. Ditching the cars and walking to school instead is just one example of how they’re aiming to play their part. “It’s been fantastic getting involved in the community and the Walk to School initiative is one that is really important to children,” Willow Tree Primary School Deputy Head Teacher, James Hughes, said. “Our children have become little activists and wanted to do their part by getting people walking and they were really keen for the teachers to make an effort as well.

The Deputy Head Teacher was also keen to highlight the impact that these events have on the mental and physical health of their pupils and also their involvement in the community. “There’s been a big push on the well-being side of things as well as them wanting people outside chatting and talking. You could see the smile on the kids’ faces being able to have a chat and enjoy the sunshine. For the children to see their place in the local community, it’s really important. With an initiative like this that is so important to the children and that has the backing of Harrogate Town and the Mayor and Mayoress,

SCOUTING REPORT

Three key men in the U's squad to keep a close eye on today...

Luke Chambers

Joe Toth/Shutterstock

The U's captured the signature of experienced defender and former Ipswich Town captain Luke Chambers over the Summer. Leaving Portman Road after nine years there, 36-year-old Chambers has made more than 800 professional appearances in a eighteen-year career. Beginning his career at Northampton Town, Chambers played 149 times for the Cobblers between 2003 and 2007, before making the switch to Nottingham Forest. While at Forest, Luke helped his side to promotion from League One, then into the top six of the Championship in a five-year spell at the City Ground, switching to Ipswich Town in 2012. A regular in the team at Portman Road, Chambers spent many of his 396 games for Ipswich Town as captain, and entering the top ten appearance makers for the Suffolk club before his departure.

Brendan Wiredu ▼

Freddie Sears

Signing for the U’s on January deadline day in 2021, the 22-yearold graduated from Charlton Athletic's academy made six first-team appearances in cup competitions for the Addicks. He was loaned out to Bromley for the latter half of the 2018-19 season before spending the first half of last season at Colchester, playing seven league games before returning to the Valley in January 2020. After finding it hard to break into the Addicks first team regularly, he returned to the U’s on a permanent basis. Joe Toth/Shutterstock

Top scorer with 10 goals so far this season, 36-year-old Sears re-joined Colchester in the Summer after spending six years at Ipswich Town. His career started at West Ham United, where he scored on his debut against Blackburn Rovers in the Premier League in 2008. A series of loan spells followed before Sears found his home at Colchester after a successful loan spell in the 2011/12 season. Joining permanently in the summer of 2012, Sears was a regular, notching 36 goals before making the switch to the Tractor Boys in 2015. Just over 200 appearances for Ipswich preceded Freddie's move back to Essex.

Colchester United made headlines as a Southern League club by reaching the FA Cup fifth round in 1947/48. Ted Fenton's side beat Chelmsford City 3-1, Banbury Spencer 2-1 and Wrexham 1-0 to secure a third round tie at home to top-flight Huddersfield Town. Bob Curry's goal clinched a 1-0 victory in front of 16,005: Harry Wright, Digger Kettle, Bob Allen, Harry Bearryman, Ted Fenton, Andy Brown, Dennis Hillman, Bob Curry, Arthur Turner, Fred Cutting, Len Cater. Bradford PA were defeated 3-2 at Layer Road before Colchester lost 5-0 at Blackpool in the fifth round. Ted Fenton became West Ham's assistant-boss.

Colchester United narrowly missed promotion to the Second Division in 1956/57. Benny Fenton's side began with a thrilling 3-2 win at home to local rivals Southend United and underlined their promotion challenge by beating Southampton 3-1, then trouncing Shrewsbury Town 6-0. The U's looked promotion certainties after a 20 match unbeaten run but the loss of key players like Bob Dale and Chic Milligan contributed to three successive away defeats and Ipswich Town clinched the Third Division (South) title on the last day of the season. Colchester finished a point behind in third place, their highest League position.

Benny Fenton managed Colchester United back to the Third Division at the first attempt in 1961/62. Summer signings included Brian Abrey from Chelsea and Mike Foster from Leicester City, with the U's unbeaten in their opening nine League games. Bobby Hunt and Martyn King scored four goals apiece in Colchester's record 9-1 win at home to Bradford City at the end of December. Record scorer Bobby Hunt netted four more as the U's celebrated promotion with a 5-3 win over Doncaster Rovers and formed a lethal partnership with Martyn King, while Percy Ames, John Fowler, Ron Hunt and Peter Wright were ever-present.

Colchester United regained Third Division status at the first attempt under Neil Franklin in 1965/66. New forwards included Reg Stratton and former Ipswich favourite Ted Phillips, with the U's emerging as early pace-setters after losing just one of their first seven games. Overcoming a disappointing spell, Colchester revived their promotion challenge with only one defeat in a ten-match run early in the New Year including a 6-3 victory over Bradford PA. Brian Hall was everpresent, while other stars included Duncan Forbes, Mick Loughton and Sandy Kennon. Colchester finished fourth despite losing four of their last six games.

Dick Graham guided Colchester United to the FA Cup sixth round in 1970/71. The U's defeated Ringmer 3-0, Cambridge United 3-0, Barnet 1-0 and Rochdale 5-0 to secure a fifth round tie at home to starstudded Leeds United. Two goals by Ray Crawford plus another from Dave Simmons gave Colchester an epic 3-2 victory at Layer Road: Graham Smith, Brian Hall, Bobby Cram, John Gilchrist, Brian Garvey, John Kurila, Brian Lewis, Dave Simmons, Mick Mahon, Ray Crawford, Brian Gibbs. The U's lost 5-0 at Everton in the sixth round and narrowly missed promotion, but beat top-flight West Brom in the 1971 Watney Cup final.

Jim Smith managed Colchester United to promotion in 1973/74. The U's kicked off with a 1-0 victory at Barnsley and lost just one of their opening 19 Fourth Division games to emerge as pace-setters. Leading marksman Bobby Svarc scored all four goals as Colchester triumphed 4-0 at Chester and he was ever-present together with goalkeeper Mike Walker and central defender Ray Harford. Title hopes faded with three successive defeats in early March but Gary Moore was signed to replace the injured Steve Foley in attack as the U's finished third with 60 points and had the best defensive record in the Fourth Division.

2006: Colchester United players celebrate promotion into the Championship

Bobby Roberts guided Colchester United back to the Third Division at the first attempt in 1976/77. Young players like Ian Allinson and Steve Dowman impressed as the U's lost just two home League games all season, against Cambridge United and Southend, also taking topflight Derby County to an FA Cup fourth round replay at Layer Road. A thrilling climax to the campaign saw Colchester finish in third position with 59 points and win promotion with Cambridge United, Exeter and Bradford City. Longserving Micky Cook was the sole ever-present player, while Bobby Gough and Colin Garwood scored 44 goals between them.

1991/92

Colchester United won the Conference title and FA Trophy 'double' in 1991/92. Having finished runners-up to Barnet the previous season, the U's regained Football League status at the second attempt. They lost just one of their opening 21 Conference matches but Wycombe Wanderers pushed Colchester all the way and the U's clinched the Conference title on

goal difference after winning 5-0 at home to Barrow on the last day of the season. Colchester beat Kingstonian 3-2, Merthyr Tydfil 1-0, Morecambe 3-1, Telford United 4-0 and Macclesfield Town 4-1 en route to the FA Trophy final, defeating Witton Albion 3-1 at Wembley.

1997/98

Colchester United won promotion to the Second Division via the play-offs in 1997/98. New signings Ian Hathaway and Aaron Skelton made their debuts as they began with a 2-1 win at home to Darlington. Steve Wignall's side were languishing in mid-table when defender Guy Branston arrived on loan from Leicester City in early February. The U's soared up the table with ten wins from their last 15 League games and were pipped to automatic promotion by Lincoln City, but reached the Third Division play-off final with a 3-2 win over Barnet. David Gregory's penalty clinched a 1-0 win over Torquay United in the Wembley final.

promotion to the Championship for the first time in 2005/06. Phil Parkinson's side won just one of their opening seven League One matches but a thrilling midseason run of 13 wins in 15 games, including a 5-0 hammering of Gillingham, catapulted the U's to the top of the table. Colchester also reached the FA Cup fifth round for only the fourth time in their history as well as the Football League Trophy southern final. They maintained their challenge and lost just one of their last 11 matches, clinching promotion as runners-up with a 0-0 draw at Yeovil on the final day. Mike Finn Kelcey/Shutterstock

SIMON MATHER

Currently his first full campaign as an EFL referee, Manchester-based official Simon Mather was in charge of Town's historic 2-1 FA Cup win at Portsmouth in December. This is actually Simon's eighth appointment at the EnviroVent Stadium since the 2018/19 season. Last season he took charge of a single EFL fixture and it just happened to be Town's 3-0 win over Colchester at Wetherby Road.

On Saturday 12 March, Town's Academy hosted Scunthorpe United in their penultimate regular league game of the season, a side Town had lost comprehensively to at the start of the season. The game started at a quick pace with both sides playing good football and pressing each other out of possession. Town had a chance 30 minutes in when the ball was played up to Emmanuel Ilesanmi who flicked it on and Finn O'Boyle went through and shot over the crossbar, in what was an early warning for the Iron. On 43 minutes, a far post header by the Scunthorpe striker drew a good save from Ashley Giles. The sides went in 0-0 at the break.

In the 53rd minute, Scunthorpe opened the scoring when Charley Strouther went through one-on-one and buried the shot, hard and low into the far corner. Within five minutes, Town were back on level terms, and it actually came about after a short Iron corner was counter-attacked, and ended with their Finn O'Boyle drawing a foul in the area, and George Horbury calmly dispatched from the spot for the second week running to make it 1-1.

After taking the game to Scunthorpe, Town unfortunately conceded again on 62-minutes when Tyrell Sellars-Fleming went through and placed the ball past Giles in the Town goal. This did not deter the lads, and soon after, a fine move by Town was finished off in style by Joel Barker who cut inside on the edge of the 18-yard box and fired the ball in at the far post to make it 2-2. After forcing their way back into the game for a second time it looked like the game was heading for a hard earned draw, however, on 89 minutes, SellarsFleming and Ben Franklin curled the ball round the Town wall and into the bottom corner to inflict a cruel defeat on the Town players. Although Town lost the game the lads can take great confidence from the performance and considerable progress is being made.

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.

That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.
