THE BOSS’S NOTES
T HE M A N AG ER
SIMON WEAVER GOOD EVENING and I hope everyone at home is safe and well. I would like to extend my welcome to Jobi McAnuff and the staff and players of Leyton Orient who have made the trip up from London to The EnviroVent Stadium today for this rearranged fixture. Over the last few season’s we’ve had a number of games against Leyton Orient both in the National League and in League Two earlier this season at their place, and it has always been a tough game. They play an attacking style of football with a lot of threat going forward and a lot of creativity in the centre of the park, so we will need to concentrate throughout and play with energy and intensity. I unfortunately missed the trip down to London in November and although the 0-3 result would suggest it was very one-sided, we did control large periods of the game, but they were just very clinical in front of goal and at the end of the day, that’s what wins football matches.
Saturday’s defeat was really frustrating. After a really pleasing first half display in which we outplayed Bolton with some fantastic football and caused them a lot of problems, we needed to maintain that standard and keep that intensity going in the second half. Unfortunately we weren’t able to maintain those levels and a couple of poor goals from our point of view, ultimately cost us the game. It was a great pitch to play on and we were able to play the brand of football that we want to, but we need to be able to sustain it for the entirety of the game and again, work on cutting out the crucial defensive errors. As we all know, in the EFL, games come thick and fast and April is and has already been a particularly busy month for us as we reach the final stages of the season and we want to finish the campaign on a high, so will dust ourselves down and be ready to go again tonight. Enjoy the game.

FROM THE SKIPPER
T HE C A P TA I N
JOSH FALKINGHAM Looking back on Saturday against Bolton, although we were on the wrong end of the result, the performance in the first half especially was outstanding. We went there to compete against a real in form team and we completely outplayed them for 45 minutes, that can be a real positive to take going forward. However, mistakes were the difference in the second half and it does feel like we’re repeating ourselves at the moment. It’s become a recurring theme and something we need to iron out because we want to keep picking up the points and finish the season on a high. We’ve got the chance to get back to winning ways this evening against Leyton Orient, a side who we’ve played a fair few times in recent seasons but not yet had the right result against.
They’re a good side that have been on a really good run recently and have some good players, especially up top. They’ve always had really good threats in the attacking third so we’ve got to make sure we get on top of them and nullify those threats. That comes along with doing the basics right and putting in a really competitive performance. When we do that, we get something out of games, so that’s what we’ll be aiming to do to get back to winning ways this evening. I hope you’re all keeping safe and hope all those that are watching on our live stream enjoy the game today.

Sew they think it’s all over…
The Club teams up with Harrogate Scrubbers to provide scrub bags DURING THE FIRST LOCKDOWN last March a group of volunteers got together to provide over 2,300 scrubs for staff at Harrogate Hospital and were affectionately known as the ‘Harrogate Scrubbers’. Amassing a team of over 850 members and achieving their goal in just six weeks, they continued to provide PPE for local hospices, GP Surgery’s and Dentists.
be great to link up when it came to sorting kit bags for the team. Instead of paying an online company we have had an amazing response from the scrubbers who jumped at the opportunity to support the club. We have provided all the materials they need, and to repay their support, we will make a donation to the Harrogate Hospital Charity. It’s a winner all round!”
The most recent lockdown however has been very different as group member Claire Strachan explains. “The team spirit of the scrubbers was amazing last year, it gave people a purpose and a means of helping the NHS. It didn’t just provide the PPE it helped people’s mental health and overcame loneliness for many shielding or stuck at home. We still have sewers asking for something to do, so have helped charities locally needing sewing support, but we still have more volunteers than work to offer.”
Local companies Showtime Fabrics and White Rose Sewing are supplying the materials needed, and PG Branding in Hornbeam Park have offered to print the team numbers on the bags for free.
Harrogate Town MD, Garry Plant saw the work the group had done and when it came to providing the team with kit bags approached them for help. “We had seen the amazing achievements the scrubbers had done last year and thought it would
Founder of the Harrogate Scrubbers, Fran Taylor said the group were delighted to help the club. “It was brilliant to be asked to support our local football team and has given a real boost to some of the group members. Supporting local companies at the same time is what our group was all about. It is a brilliant collaboration and one we are excited to support. Knowing it will boost the mental health of a number of the volunteers by giving them something to do in lockdown is an added bonus.” Images courtesy of Gerard Binks / Yorkshire Post

JOSH MARCH
JOSH MARCH Town striker Josh March is the man in form at the moment. Having joined the camp at beginning of January, March has made a strong start to his Town career with goals and assists coming aplenty. Now 23-years-old, the frontman took Non-League football by storm just over a year ago and is now looking to do the same in the Football League. By Henry Whitaker BORN IN THE WEST MIDLANDS town of Stourbridge, March grew up loving football and is a self-proclaimed “massive” Villa fan. He and his dad were season ticket holders at Villa Park, watching the likes of Ashley Young, Gareth Barry and James Milner rip up the Premier League. It gave March a passion for the sport and it created some great memories, including a trip to Wembley for the 2010 Carling Cup Final against Manchester United. It was a game which Villa lost but a day March remembers fondly. “It was the first time I had ever seen Villa be close to winning a trophy. I’ve seen them in the playoffs but not in the big cup trophies. I remember Milner scoring the penalty and I thought we’d win it. It didn’t turn out like that but it was still a great day.”
It was Wayne Rooney who scored the winning goal that day, a striker who March had a lot of admiration for and one he tried to base his game on. “Rooney was aggressive on the pitch when he was young he was a bit wild and I used to love that fiery side about him. That volley against Newcastle when he was annoyed and he just banged it in the top corner summed him up.” By 2010, March had already spent time with the West Bromwich Albion and Wolves’ academies, but he failed to remain with either club, despite the striker being the top scorer in his age group with the Wanderers. March didn’t have height on his side as a kid and that hindered his chances with academy clubs looking for bigger players to develop.

AASS SOON AS I HEARD THE INTEREST WAS REAL, MY MIND WAS SET ON THE MOVE... I WANT TO ESTABLISH MYSELF IN THIS LEAGUE - A BIT LIKE HARROGATE - AND I FEEL LIKE ME AND THE CLUB ARE ON THE SAME PATH SO THIS MOVE FEELS RIGHT FOR EVERYONE... EVERYONE ...
”
16
JOSH MARCH However, March would then join Aston Villa up until under 13s football but was once again released. This time though it wasn’t due to his height but more so his ability, with the striker admitting he was “just nowhere near good enough” to earn another contract. He left the academy scene and went on to join Stourport Swifts, a team with a good standard of players in the Midlands Junior Football League. It’s where he’d stayed up until 16-years-old before moving onto Tipton Town. At that age, March didn’t know what he wanted to do in the future but went to college to do a course in heating and ventilation, a job he would end up doing until just a year ago. Professional football was a long way off and certainly more of a dream, with March admitting that you have to be “quite lucky” to get the break. His first season with Tipton Town was on and off with the striker not taking it as seriously as he needed to make noticeable progress. However, in his second year, that changed. “I knuckled down a bit in my second preseason and made sure I was the fittest in the team, March explains. “Tipton would regularly put players from the academy into the first team just to see what we were about. I got a training session and the manager seemed to like me and I took my chance. It was tough though as I still wasn’t physically built yet. I was a skinny kid and I had to learn how to use my body because I wasn’t going to out muscle or outpace anyone. It’s helped me though, as I was having to play against fully grown men from a young age. I had to win and buy fouls and I think it’s become one of the strongest parts of my game.”
third year brought joy though as March was part of the team to win back to back promotions. March played on the left-wing for the majority of his time at Alvechurch but still managed to win top scorer in three of his four seasons at the club. It was a successful period for the goalscorer and he puts part of his success at Alvechurch down to one man, his manager Ian Long. “He was very harsh on me,” March admits. “He was always on to me about things away from football like dieting and drinking. He picked on me almost but looking back, I think that was because he thought I was one of the better players. At that point in my career, I think the approach gave me the foundations to build on.” Being one of the standout talents of NonLeague Football, March earned himself the move to National League North side Leamington FC. He signed at the start of the 2019/20 season and took the division by storm. Playing as a number nine, March thrived on being the main man to get the goals and by January 2020, he’d played 27 games, scoring in 24 of them. Confidence was sky high with March saying “every half-chance felt like a full chance to me”.
A change in manager meant March and his teammates left Tipton Town, with March briefly joining Causeway United before moving onto to Alvechurch in 2015. He signed for the Church at 18-years-old and was there for four seasons, making over 150 appearances and scoring more than 50 goals for the Southern League Premier Division Central team. Alvechurch challenged for the league in his first season but were runners-up to Hereford despite winning 101 points that campaign. The second and

It was a big moment for March. It meant quitting his job and dedicating his life to playing football, something which six months earlier was just a dream. After putting pen to paper at Forest Green, the striker explains how for the next week, his phone had to be on silent. “My phone wouldn’t stop buzzing for about a week,” he laughs. “People were just wanting to congratulate me on the move as they knew how hard I had worked to get there. It was chaotic and to be honest, the whole process was so full on I didn’t really enjoy it, I just wanted it done with. On my first day, I remember warming up and realising that this is me now every day, this is my job now whereas before, I was waking up at 6.30am to go into a cold factory, getting all dirty. It’s what I use as motivation every single day, I don’t want to go back to what I did. I want to stay in football as long as possible.” March made his Football League debut in a 4-3 away win at Mansfield, then scoring on his home debut next time out. Although not the pictureperfect goal, it’s one March won’t forget. “The goal was more luck than judgement if I’m being honest. The ball came in and took two deflections before falling at my feet and I just tapped it in, a poacher’s finish,” he chuckles. “I still ran off like I had scored a 30-yard screamer.” Ten games were all March got before Covid-19 forced an end to the 2019/20 season. However,

JOSH MARCH properly ready himself for professional football. Training every day and playing at a much higher standard wasn’t something he was used to. March spent 2-3 hours a day working on his fitness, losing When this season did begin, March returned looking sharp and had a strong pre-season. But starting the campaign well meant he struggled to break into the team. March admits he’s someone who can’t stand being on the bench or in the stands week in, week a loan move would be the best option. Cue Harrogate Town… The loan move to North Yorkshire came about after the striker was talking to his old Leamington manager, who knows Simon Weaver well. Word quickly got around and not too long later, March was on his way to Harrogate. “As soon as I heard the interest was real, my mind was set on the move,” March states. “I want to establish myself in this league - a bit like Harrogate - and I feel like me and the club are on the same path so this move feels right for everyone.” March has come into the squad and made an immediate impact during his first month. A goal against Tranmere was followed by more against Newport County and Crawley Town, making it three in three appearances. It’s added a new dimension to this Town team and the striker is now looking forward to continuing that form as the season goes on. “It almost feels like I’ve become a professional footballer all over again moving here. I’m just taking each game as it comes and I want to get as many goals and win as many games as possible. Long term, I hope I get the chance to play in the Premier League at some point but if not, I just want to give football my all and have no regrets.”

TONIGHT’S OPPOSITION
LEYTON ORIENT LEYTON ORIENT were founded in 1881 by a group of boys who played under the guise of Glyn Cricket Club. In 1888, the club was re-named Orient FC after the Orient Steamship & Navigation Company who then player, Jack Dearing worked for. The club became professional in late 1903 and in 1905 were elected into the Second Division of the Football League along with Chelsea, Leeds City and Stockport County.
Hearn sold the club in June 2014 to Francesco Becchetti, but Orient were relegated from League One in 2014-15 and even worse was to come when they were relegated from the Football League in 2016-17. With that Becchetti sold the club to Nigel Travis, but they stabilised and Justin Edinburgh led them back to the EFL in 2018-19 after winning the National League title, beating Town twice in the process.
The club won it’s first promotion in 1955-56 after topping the Division Three South with a club record 106 goals in 46 games. In April 1962 Orient won promotion to Division One, however their stay lasted just a year and the O’s were relegated with another relegation to Division Three following. Orient were Division Three Champions in 1970 and missed out on promotion back to Division One in 1974 by a point. 1982 saw a return to Division Three, and 1985 ended in relegation to Division Four.
Summer 2019 was a very difficult time for the club with the passing of Justin Edinburgh, and so soon after them returning to the EFL, but the club continued remarkably. Ross Embleton who worked with the squad under Edinburgh took over and lead the O’s to a 17th-place finish in their first season back in the EFL last season.
The mid-1990s were a period of financial difficulty with Barry Hearn taking ownership in March 1995 but he couldn’t prevent Orient being relegated to the fourth tier. In 1999 the O’s lost the playoff final to Scunthorpe United and again to Blackpool in 2001. Promotion was finally achieved in 2005-06 when Orient finished third. A period of near-success came under Russell Slade who led Orient to seventh in 2012-13, and third in 2013-14 to reach the play-offs but they lost the final to Rotherham United.
This season, the O’s have suffered from inconsistency, where runs of wins have often been followed by runs of losses. Following a dip in form and a run of seven games without a win in January and February, the club parted company with Embleton and placed Jobi McAnuff in interim charge feeling that the play-offs were still within reach. The change has had a positive effect with the O’s going unbeaten in seven including four wins on the bounce, a run which only came to an end on Saturday at Cheltenham and that has seen them close within four points of the play-offs.

LEAGUE TWO ROUND-UP by Mark Walker, PA Media
Exeter players celebrate during their impressive win at Cambridge
Grimsby Town forward Stefan Payne was sent off for headbutting team-mate Filipe Morais in his side’s 1-0 defeat at Bradford City, while Cheltenham Town went back to the top of the table. Payne was sent off in the dressing room by referee James Bell after clashing with Morais at the end of the first half. Bottom club Grimsby missed the chance to close the seven-point gap between themselves and third-bottom Colchester as Bradford’s Anthony O’Connor scored the only goal just before half-time.
early on, but Kieran Lee equalised soon after half-time and Eoin Doyle struck with 12 minutes remaining for the Trotters, who sit two points above Tranmere.
Cheltenham moved one point above closest rivals Cambridge with a game in hand after Conor Thomas’ first-half penalty sealed a 1-0 home win against Leyton Orient. Thomas converted from the spot in the 31st minute following Orient goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux’s challenge on Andy Williams.
Brandon Thomas-Asante and Ian Henderson scored as Salford City edged to a 2-1 win over Stevenage, who had levelled through Luther Wildin, while Walsall beat slumping Forest Green Rovers by the same scoreline. Rory Holden and James Clarke were on-target for the Saddlers, rendering Jordan MooreTaylor’s goal a mere consolation for sixth-placed Rovers, who parted company with Mark Cooper on Sunday having taken just one point from their last six matches.
Offrande Zanzala’s penalty helped Carlisle United to a 2-2 draw at struggling Barrow, who are now six points clear of danger. Jack Armer put Carlisle ahead and although Scott Quigley and Patrick Brough struck to lift Barrow into the lead, the spoils were shared after Zanzala converted from the spot.
Cambridge United slipped to a shock 4-1 home defeat to Exeter City, but remain six points clear of fourthplaced Tranmere Rovers in the race for automatic promotion. Ryan Bowman’s header and Jack Sparkes’ long-range effort put the play-off chasing Exeter Second-bottom Southend United moved to within 2-0 up within quarter of an hour before Joe Ironside four points of safety following their goalless draw reduced the deficit 10 minutes after half-time. Vale sprung out the traps when play resumed and Tom Conlon’s freekick was headed home by Nathan Smith in the 34th minute.
