Avid Town fan, Arun who was nine on Thursday, is celebrating with his family and nine of his friends at the match today to cheer on Town. Enjoy your day Arun!
The squad has been together for three seasons now. We initially had a mixed group of U11/U10 (as they are now) girls, but within a short period we had enough numbers to split the group into two separate teams so we now have an U12, U11 and U10 representation (all with squads or circa 16 girls). As of this season we also have U9 and U7 teams and the club is going from strength to strength supporting the women’s game.

THE GAFFER
SIMON WEAVER
Good afternoon and welcome to the EnviroVent Stadium for our match against Carlisle United and also our Fan 'Thank You' Day, which is an opportunity for all of us to celebrate the achievements and progress we’ve made over the last couple of years which supporters have unfortunately missed out on. 2020 and 2021 saw us achieve promotion to the Football League via Wembley, win the FA Trophy at the National Stadium and retain our EFL status at the first attempt. They were all big moments for the club that supporters couldn’t witness in person and that was such shame as the Town fans have been so important to us and continue to be so. Today is about us showing our appreciation to all the fans, whether they’ve been to one home game or every one of our fixtures across the country. To explain what the continued loyalty and backing means to us all is hard to put into words but what I can say is that we wouldn’t have made it this far without you, so thank you to all of you. Following results in the division last weekend, we come into today’s game with our place in League Two guaranteed for next season and that’s an absolutely massive thing for us and so necessary in the first two years of being at this level. We’ve gone to a lot of big grounds with big atmospheres this year and learned a lot from that. We’ve seen some great individual performances and some real

team displays which can give us so much optimism going forward, and although I know now with results being how they’ve been it’s harder to reflect and take joy from those achievements, I think we can all be excited for what’s to come. We’re already excited by the plans in place for next season and we’ll sure give it everything we’ve got in our final three games this season. Mathematical safety will take a bit of weight off everyone’s shoulders, and I want the players to really go out there and express themselves on the pitch today. It’s a chance to really get the ball down and play and enjoy what’s left of the season. Once again, thank you for your support this season and enjoy the afternoon.

THE SKIPPERS'
SEASON REVIEW The 2021/22 season is nearing its end and in our penultimate game of the season against Carlisle, I thought it would be a good time to reflect on what’s been a challenging but memorable second campaign in the Football League for the Club. We’ve seen record attendances at the EnviroVent Stadium and a record away following, we’ve had Yorkshire Derby success (which is always a personal highlight) and of course we had some unforgettable moments in the FA Cup...
I
f we go way back to the July 2021 which marked the start of preseason, the Gaffer brought in some new faces which makes for an exciting time for the players and fans. Straight away during our training sessions we were seeing the obvious attacking talents of Alex Pattison and Luke Armstrong, and the defensive experience of Rory McArdle and Mark Oxley. It added to a real sense of optimism going into the season and also the excitement to play in front of the fans again. That was a massive thing for us in that it felt like football was returning to normality, if you like. We were going to be seeing some bigger crowds at the EnviroVent Stadium and also experiencing some big away days that we missed out on in our first year in the Football League.

Touching on the preseason games, we had some tough opponents in Sunderland and Rotherham to name a couple and although results didn’t go how we’d have liked, I always had a sense that the confidence was there and we were seeing that in training and in glimpses during the games. Our first fixture of the EFL season was at home against Rochdale and we went into it looking to get off to a fast start and we did just that. Everybody wants to start the campaign off with a win and we’ve always started that way pretty much since I’ve been at the club. The sun was shining on the opening day, lots of families were at the game including mine - and it was the first time my little girl got to see me play in person. For her to be there

and for us to win the game with a 90th minute winner, it made for a great day and the perfect start to our season. Obviously we would have then liked to go into the next few fixtures and really get the ball rolling but what followed was an unexpected two week break from action when Covid well and truly hit the squad. At the start of the season everyone is fresh and ready to go so it was frustrating for us to stop so soon after starting but the priority had to be the health and wellbeing of the squad and staff. Two weeks later, we returned to action against Barrow at home and reacted just how we expected. A 2-1 win was deserved and we followed it with a Tuesday night trip to Leyton Orient and we put in a really professional performance against them. It was a place we’d gone to many a times but never picked up the three points, so to do that, keep a clean sheet and play really well was a great feeling for the group. At that moment, we felt we were more than capable of being right in amongst it and that stayed with us for a little while. The first month of the season was soon upon us and with it and the transfer window ending, the manager added one final player to the group and that was a familiar face, Jack Diamond. Jack was so influential in our National League promotion season and so to have him with us was a massive boost and we felt lucky to have him. He’d had a good year with Sunderland and was very sharp in the preseason game against us, so we felt getting someone with that quality on the left hand side was going to be huge. He hit the ground running straight away as he proved to be heavily involved in our 3-1 win away against Mansfield, who had a terrific support behind them. It had been strong six or so opening games for us and we were excited going into the Friday night clash with Newport County at the EnviroVent Stadium. Friday night football always seems to have a different feeling to it and it was no different for our game. It was a great evening weather wise and over 2,500 fans cheered us on for the full 90 minutes.
The next noticeable game of the season was against Newcastle u21s in the Papa John’s Trophy. The game is a memorable one as we saw some of our Academy players feature for the first time and that was great to see and really exciting for the future. I know the Club really want to give our youngsters a chance and from seeing their attitude and performances in training, they deserved it. We won the match 2-0 and it meant we progressed into the knockout stages of the competition, which was important for us as we wanted to give ourselves the best opportunity to play at Wembley again. Just four days after securing our progression, we were back at the EnviroVent Stadium for what turned out to be a great afternoon and one of our best results of the season. We hosted Scunthorpe United which meant it was one of the more local games we have in this League and so it had the derby atmosphere to it. As well as that, we had a record home attendance of 3,180 and the build-up throughout the week all added it to being a big game for us. You could feel it was going to be an important afternoon to help build the fan base and we needed to go out there and put in an impressive performance. To be 4-0 up after 30 minutes was incredible and the lads were electric. Our identity is to start fast in games but no one was expecting us to do what we did. It was one of the best atmospheres we’ve had at a home game and just a taste what we can create and achieve together. Football, however, is an ever changing game and the high of a 6-1 win was followed by the deflation of a 1-0 defeat away at Colchester, where we didn’t deserve to come away with anything. Those are really important moments where you can continue the momentum from a big win but we just never got going and found it a sticky afternoon. As much as we hadn’t played great, a point would have left us happy and that’s something we have to get better at getting on tough days.
Although Newport didn’t have the best start to the season, they’re side with real Football League pedigree and their early goal proved that. I felt it was a very end to end game in the first half and it helped the contest live up to the occasion. It was an enjoyable game for everyone and both teams probably thought they could have left with the three points, so for the final score to be 2-2, I think we could be happy with the outcome.

We reacted well though in the following game against Tranmere and it had a very similar feel to the Newport County game. We were coming up against an impressive side and it was going to be another test to see where we were really at. Were we in the position just because of a fast start or can we actually compete with these big, well established teams? It ended in 2-2 draw and both sides probably walked off the pitch thinking they should have won it in a really high intensity game but we can say that it was a really good point. Next up was one of the most hostile away trips we faced in the 21/22 season. We travelled up to Victoria Park to face Hartlepool United, a place familiar to us from our National League days. We didn’t play our best football in the first half but found ourselves 2-0 up at the break and we’d done a great job of quietening their crowd. However, a seven minute spell early into the second half completely turned the game on its head. On the 51st minute we were 2-0 up, on the 59th minute we were 3-2 down. Looking back on it, you have to take your hats off to the Hartlepool crowd who probably won them that game. The noise they created was incredible and they really drove their team on and pretty much sucked the ball into our net. If you ever needed an example of crowds being important and influential to teams, that’s it right there. Our FA Cup campaign got underway not too long after and we had been handed a tough, tough tie against Wrexham. There’s been some big changes there in the last couple of years with the ownership, signing some big name players for that league and on top of that, every previous experience I’ve had against Wrexham has left me feeling heavy in the legs as they’re such a physical outfit. The FA Cup game did no different to me and the squad. We didn’t play well first half but reacted well to going behind and finished the game the much stronger of the two sides. In the end we deserved to go through and we were delighted to do so as a FA Cup run was something we as a group had yet to achieve. Another big game for us in a cup competition was Sheffield Wednesday as we went to Hillsborough for our final Papa John’s Trophy Group Stage game. The match was a real strange one as we played some blistering football at times and probably some of the best we’ve played all
#ProudToBeTown I www.harrogatetownafc.com
season but came off the pitch losing 4-0. I think it’s one of the strangest games of the season but looking back at the performance, I certainly don’t think we let ourselves down against a quality side and one of the biggest sides in the competition. By the end of November, we had played 19 league games and sat in 7th place on 30 points, which was really promising. We finished the month with a great team performance against Swindon Town in front of over 8,000 fans which was the biggest we’d come up against at that time. Again, they were a side with so much quality for the league but I thought we competed really well and executed the game plan superbly. Jack Diamond got us ahead with a goal coming from a route one kick from Ox but the ref unfortunately then gave a soft penalty late on and we needed to dig deep. We felt it was a good, good point though as we had come under a great amount of pressure from their players and fans late on. Since I’ve been at this club, there’s been some amazing moments. We’ve won promotions, lifted silverware at Wembley and climbed to the Football League. In December 2021, we created another one of those unforgettable memories and this time it was in the FA Cup. We got drawn against Portsmouth in the Second Round and it was probably the toughest tie possible, especially at Fratton Park. It’s a ground with so much history and it’s seen so much

take points from either contest. We were in and around the playoff spots and felt in the Northampton game we deserved something from it. We played well and they were more than happy to sit back and try get their goals from set pieces, which they did.

success including the FA Cup winning run that Portsmouth had not too long ago. We went into that game as the underdogs but played unbelievably well and deserved everything we got. We took the lead through Luke and although Portsmouth equalised almost immediately just before the break, we came out for the second half confident and I think it showed as we dominated the half and deservedly got a last minute winner through Jack Diamond.
Sutton away was a difficult place to go but again, we played well enough to at least get a point from the game. They scored a quality goal to be fair to them and then did what they do best which is defend a lead and take the sting out of the game. I think the last half an hour was all us but we just couldn’t break them down enough to get a goal. To come away with nothing going into the Christmas period was a blow.
I think the stand out moment from that day was with the Chairman after the game. When travelling on the coach with us he never really comes to the back where all the players sit, but after that game he came to the back of the bus to congratulate the lads with a tear in his eye and I think that sums up just how big a moment it was for him. It was a special, special day for someone who has put an immense amount of work into Harrogate Town Football Club. To see him emotional was really touching.
The festive period is usually an extremely busy one with games coming thick fast. However, the whole Football League got hit with Covid just before Christmas that disrupted the fixtures in a big way. It meant we missed out on the Boxing Day fixture against Bradford City at Valley Parade which was a fixture everyone was looking forward to.
As well all know, there’s very little time during the season to enjoy the success and so as soon as we woke up the day after Portsmouth, our focus turned to a very tricky run of games in the league of Forest Green, Northampton and Sutton who all occupied the automatic promotion spots at the time. We came away with zero points which was heavily disappointing and Forest Green was the first time in the season we had been battered. They were on an incredible run and at that moment, I think everyone was thinking they were set to break every League Two record going. They really showed their quality and class against us and deserved the three points.
We got back to action just after the New Year and qualified for the quarter-finals of the Papa John’s Trophy before heading south for our FA Cup Third Round tie against Luton Town. It was a massive day for the club but probably not many on the outside expected too much from us. The game was another really strange one to play in and was similar to Sheffield Wednesday. We played some of the best football I’ve seen from us yet walked off the pitch with a 4-0 loss. Luton’s quality definitely shone through in the closing stages but we had put a lot into the game and it meant there was real deflation afterwards because we had played well, done ourselves proud and if we had got some goals it could have been a completely different story. We didn’t take our chances and suffered against a Championship side.
The following two games were tough defeats to take though and makes us annoyed that we didn’t
It was a heavy defeat in terms of the score line but we went into the next game still confident,

knowing we’d played some great football. We had Newport away in the early Saturday kick-off at an empty stadium due to Covid regulations in Wales and I think the performance was our worst of the season. We just didn’t turn up that day and looking back now, that game was probably the catalyst to how we’ve been since. We’ve had two or three good results since but the overall form has been nowhere near good enough and that’s the brutal honesty of it. As players, we’ve let the staff, fans and club down because it’s not what any of us has been used to. Since that defeat I’ve talked about reigniting and kickstarting our season, which we looked like doing straightaway after a 3-0 win against Oldham but we then had a tough Tuesday night at Sutton in the Papa John’s Quarter-Finals and then lost to Stevenage 3-0 when they were in no form whatsoever. Myself and others made mistakes in that game and we found ourselves 2-0 down out of nowhere, and it was that feeling of deflation again as we were right in the mix for the play off spots at that moment. The league table was so tight and it was just a case of putting a string of results together but we failed to do so. The manager had brought in new faces in January with the likes of Brahima Diarra really exciting the group, as well as young striker Calum Kavanagh who was creating a fair few great chances. Reactions from those iffy couple of games were positive though as we got a good point at home against in form Mansfield Town and we then won the Yorkshire Derby against Bradford City in the early kick off at the EnviroVent Stadium. We’ve had some great results against Bradford in the last two years considering the size of their club and I thought the crowd was fantastic and it felt like a proper derby game with tackles flying in. To get a 2-0 win at that point of the season and to finish the game strong, we we’re thinking again that it can be the catalyst to really challenge going into the final quarter of the season. However, we just haven’t been able to get back to back wins which can make such a difference. We blitzed Rochdale not long after and looked in command but ended up conceding late on to drop two points and we were disappointed with that. But like I alluded to earlier, a point from any game in this league can’t be rejected, especially away from home.
12
I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
We were away from home in the following game as we made our longest trip of the season when travelling to face Exeter. They were in incredible form at the time and it was some performance from us in terms of how we played and blew Exeter away in the first half. Unfortunately, we allowed them to come back into it in the second half and the goal at the end which won it for Exeter was so hard to take and made for a quiet journey home. It was a proper sucker punch and we felt that defeat bad. Having thrown away a two goal lead the week before as well, it made for a challenging period. Our third away game on the spin was Bradford City and it was an opportunity to forget the last couple of results and really get at our Yorkshire rivals in the derby. Bradford had just sacked their manager and you could tell there was nervousness within the stadium but they got ahead with a great goal that settled them and got the crowd on their side. What we did do well that night though was stand up to that challenge and not let our head drops. Woz scored just before half time and that was huge for momentum going into the second half, as we took the lead through a Lewis Page free-kick and then Jack Diamond’s late goal killed the game. From a personal point of view, it was one of the best days being at this club. I say that because when I signed, we were up against teams in the National North and with a few handful of supporters travelling to games but against Bradford, we had over 700 fans in the away end and it was a new record for us. The celebrations

at the end brought out a real, raw emotion from me as I feel a true connection to this club, something I think a lot of players can struggle to find anywhere. The uniqueness of here is that I feel it’s where we belong. That Tuesday night at Valley Parade was an unbelievable night and to do it in front of the fans who travelled, it felt like a promotion winning feeling and win for the fans. It was such a high after that game and a shame that we haven’t been able to give the fans more to cheer about in the closing stages of the season. We as players have to take responsibility for that form as we simply haven’t been good enough in the past couple of months. Going forward, we’ve got to big enough and strong enough mentally to take the hits and the disappointments and use them to our advantage. Yes, we’ve had great success in the past but we have to live in the moment and at the moment, we’ve struggled. I must stress that the mentality within this squad and me personally is that we want to take this club to the next level. The last couple of months has shown we’re short of where we want to be but all I can say to the fans is that the ambition to reach that next height is very much still there and I have full belief in us achieving that. We’ve seen that division defining moments occur from January onwards. We saw it last season with Bolton who kicked on after the New Year and we’ve seen it this season with Bristol Rovers

and other teams as well who have steadily climbed up the table and into promotion contention. We have to learn from these experiences and know that when it comes to this time next year, we have to have a good run if we want to end up at top end of the league table. The tightness of the league will never change and I think it’ll always be one of the strangest leagues to play in because of that. Everybody can beat everybody and it’s clear how big back to back wins can be for confidence, momentum and league position. We’re all super ambitious at this football club but the really important thing is to stabilise the Club in this league and last weekend’s results secured our place for another season. It means we can all enjoy the last couple of games and play with a sense of freedom and also use it as a chance to build momentum and a good feeling going into the next campaign. I’d like to finish my season review with a tribute to the fans. We as players always appreciate the support we get home and away as we’re one of you at the end of the day. We feel the wins just as much as you do and with the family and tight knit feel that’s been created at this club, we feel the hurt of defeat just as badly. Today’s game against Carlisle is dedicated to all our fans who have been amazing this season and in the seasons prior. You’ve missed out on some massive moments and it’s almost felt like we haven’t had a proper chance to celebrate that together. Hopefully, this Saturday will be that chance to really enjoy the occasion and make the EnviroVent Stadium feel like a party venue. It’s a true honour to captain of this football club and it’s so important that everyone has belief and stays positive. When that happens, fans and players feed off each other and that’s what makes this such a special family club. Our aim in the last couple of games is to finish on a positive note and we’ll go into next season as absolutely flying.

Season 1966/67 Yorkshire League Div One Here we see a brief Harrogate Advertiser report of a first ever league game at Wetherby Road which took place on Sunday 19 March 1967 against Selby Town. Scorers for Town were Keith Flatman, Clifford and an own goal. A Whitworth Cup game took precedent on the Saturday so Town had to play the league game on a Sunday which did help keep down the backlog of fixtures. Town: Barry, Corr, Davies, Langlands, Lister, B. Sunday football began the season before and Town played in a Yorkshire league fixture on 17 April 1966, a 2-0 defeat at Hallam, the oldest club ground in the world.

NCS CHANGEMAKERS BRING EASTER JOY Over the Easter period, our NCS Changemakers have been busy putting smiles on people’s faces with their ‘Action Day’ project.
After identifying a cause they were passionate about the group decided to contribute to New Beginnings Easter project. New Beginnings are a local charity within the Harrogate area that supports families following domestic abuse. After getting in contact with the charity, the young people were made aware that they required 35 Easter Eggs for them to donate, however, they needed them as soon as possible as the time for them to be delivered was fast approaching. The imminent deadline could’ve deterred the group and put them off but this was not the case and it in fact did the opposite. The young people became even more inspired and motivated to

ensure that they received these donations. Within 48 hours, the group had collected 35 Easter eggs from families and friends as well as neighbours to make sure no one missed out at New Beginnings. After the eggs were collected the young people didn’t stop there, they wanted to help the charity even further and were able to go and support the charity by contributing to the development of the care packages. Furthermore, they were also able to fill up the van ready to go out for delivery that evening. The group has received some amazing feedback from the charity and those that have benefitted. The young people are continuing to look to help New Beginnings as they continue to leave a lasting impact within their local communities.

SCOUTING REPORT
Three key men in the Blues' squad to look out for this afternoon...
▼
Rod McDonald
James Marsh/Shutterstock
Joining the Blues in August 2020, 30-year-old McDonald started in academy football with Stoke City and Manchester City, then having a spell at Oldham before dropping into non-league with Colwyn Bay, Hereford and Telford. The 6ft 3in defender earned a step up to Northampton Town in 2015 and made 37 appearances in two campaigns for the Cobblers. Coventry then signed McDonald and he was a 41-game regular for the Sky Blues in 2017/18 before joining Wimbledon in 2018. He clocked up 46 appearances in his two campaigns for the Dons before moving to Cumbria. Since then he has racked up over 60 appearances for Carlisle in two seasons.

Omari Patrick
▼
Signing in May 2019, the 24-yearold Gateshead College graduate, came through the U19 system with Gateshead. After making his first-team debut in 2017 , he went on to make a total of 58 appearances for the Heed and picked up the National League’s ‘Young Player of the Year’ award for the 2018-19 season before joining the Cumbrians. Then Blues manager, Chris Beech converted him to a midfield role, a move that reaped dividends with Mellish top scoring with 11 league goals last season in all competitions. Almost ever-present for the last two seasons, Mellish has racked up over 100 appearances already for the Blues.

CLASSIC CAMPAIGNS Football historian LEIGH EDWARDS selects ten post-war Carlisle United 'Classic Campaigns'... 1961/62
Carlisle United won promotion for the first time in 1961/62. New signings Terry Caldwell, Les Dagger, Hugh Neil and Sammy Taylor made their debuts as Carlisle kicked off with a 2-1 victory over Aldershot and later surged up the table with five straight wins. They beat Darlington 4-0 and Barnsley 2-1 before losing 3-1 at Wolves in the FA Cup third round. Billy Stark arrived from Crewe and Geoff Martin from Darlington, helping Carlisle overcome inconsistent results to remain in the promotion race. Ivor Powell's side won 2-1 at Doncaster, then beat Chester 2-0 in front of 12,660 at Brunton Park to clinch fourth place.
1963/64
Carlisle scored a club record 113 League goals as they regained Third Division status at the first attempt in 1963/64. Alan Ashman swapped Alan McBain for Luton pair Jack Lornie and Allan Ross, with the latter setting the club appearance record. Ace marksman Hughie McIlmoyle spearheaded the attack as Carlisle slammed 13 goals past Hartlepools in two meetings, also trouncing Lincoln 5-0, Darlington 6-1 and Doncaster 6-0. They progressed to the FA Cup fifth round before losing 1-0 at Preston and despite just one defeat in their last ten games, were pipped to the Fourth Division title by Gillingham on goal average.
1964/65
Alan Ashman managed Carlisle to the Third Division championship in 1964/65. Stan Harland made his debut as newly promoted Carlisle kicked off with a 1-0 victory at Colchester but won just two of their next ten League games. Hughie McIlmoyle was sold to Wolves, while newcomers included Frank Large, Willie Carlin and Ronnie Simpson. Carlisle smashed four goals past Barnsley, Colchester and Bournemouth, then gained seven wins in eight matches before being held to a 0-0 draw by Bristol City. They lost 2-0 at rivals Mansfield but bounced back to beat the Stags 3-0 in the title decider at Brunton Park the following day.
1969/70
Carlisle United reached the League Cup semi-finals in 1969/70. Summer signings included Bob Hatton from Northampton and Tot Winstanley from Newcastle, with Carlisle losing just one of their first five Second Division games. They defeated Huddersfield Town 2-0, Blackburn Rovers 2-1, Chelsea 1-0 and Oxford United 1-0 in the League Cup before losing 4-2 on aggregate to West Brom in the semi-finals. Bob Stokoe left to manage Blackpool and Ian MacFarlane replaced him in charge, with Carlisle defeated 2-1 by Middlesbrough in the FA Cup fifth round. Chris Balderstone was everpresent as they finished mid-table.
34 I HARROGATE TOWN AFC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
1973/74
Alan Ashman achieved a minor miracle by taking Carlisle United into the top-flight in 1973/74. Frank Clarke scored on his debut as Carlisle started with a 1-1 draw against Cardiff but then crashed to a 6-1 defeat at Luton and failed to win any of their first six games. Chris Balderstone returned from cricket duty and Carlisle lost just three times in 21 Second Division matches, also beating holders Sunderland in the FA Cup and taking eventual winners Liverpool to a fourth round replay. Top scorer Frank Clarke netted four goals as they beat Swindon 5-1 and Carlisle pipped Orient to third place with a 2-0 win over Aston Villa.
1974/75
Carlisle United sat proudly on top of the First Division after winning their opening three games of the 1974/75 campaign. Record signing Bobby Parker made his debut as goals by skipper Bill Green and Les O'Neill gave Carlisle a 2-0 victory at Chelsea, then Les O'Neill scored twice more to secure a 2-0 win at Middlesbrough and Chris Balderstone's penalty beat Spurs 1-0 at Brunton Park. Carlisle slipped down the table after this and were relegated but thrashed eventual champions Derby 3-0, completed the double over Everton and defeated the likes of Arsenal, Ipswich and Wolves. They also reached the FA Cup sixth round.

1981/82
Bob Stokoe managed Carlisle back to the Second Division in 1981/82. Newcomers Jackie Ashurst, Bob Lee and Pop Robson featured as Carlisle kicked off with a 2-2 draw at home to Bristol City. Gordon Staniforth grabbed a hat-trick in the 3-1 victory over Plymouth and Carlisle soared to the top of the table with six straight wins. Peter Beardsley returned to Vancouver but Tommy Craig arrived as playercoach and Tom Ritchie joined on loan from Sunderland, helping Carlisle to finish runners-up. Pop Robson was top scorer, while other stars were Trevor Swinburne, Jackie Ashurst, Dave Rushbury and Bobby Parker.
from a 2-1 defeat at Northampton to remain unbeaten in their next 19 matches. David Reeves was leading marksman as Carlisle won the title with a club record 91 points. They also reached their first Wembley final but lost 1-0 to a golden goal in extra-time against Birmingham City watched by 76,633.
1996/97
Mervyn Day guided Carlisle to a promotion and Auto Windscreens Shield 'double' in 1996/97. They had been relegated the previous season but new defenders Owen Archdeacon and Stephane Pounewatchy were key figures as they swept to the top of the table
1994/95
Carlisle United were Third Division champions and Auto Windscreens Shield finalists in 1994/95. They had qualified for the play-offs the previous season and Mick Wadsworth signed David Currie and Derek Mountfield. Carlisle stormed to the top of the table after winning seven of their first eight games and bounced back

after losing just once in their first 12 games. Allan Smart arrived from Preston and Carlisle maintained their promotion challenge with a ten match unbeaten run. They also reached the FA Cup fourth round but finished in third place after winning only three of their last 11 matches. Carlisle beat Colchester on penalties after a 0-0 draw in the Auto Windscreens Shield final.
2005/06
Karl Hawley scored 22 goals as Carlisle United won the League Two title in 2005/06. Paul Simpson's side won promotion from the Conference the previous season and new signings included Zigor Aranalde, Danny Livesey and Chris Lumsdon. Carlisle won five of their first nine matches and overcame four successive defeats, with Karl Hawley scoring consecutive hat-tricks against Stockport and Torquay. Newcomers Keiren Westwood and Michael Bridges helped Carlisle go top of the table with a 5-0 win over Chester in February and they lost just one of their last 16 matches, also reaching the Football League Trophy final.
