(The Sheepdog)
Hi, my name is Jack! I live on a farm with Dad, Mum, my sister Sal, little brother Tommy and Meg the sheepdog. I can help out with all kinds of jobs. I just love being a farmer in training.
In the grip of lambing, in the bright spring air, The farm was busy, no time to spare. The cuckoo sang brightly and Jack felt glad, He was happy with life - he could help out his Dad. He was carrying water and hay for the sheep, When his head was turned by the sound of a bleat.

Jack shouted, ‘Hey Dad! Have you noticed that ewe?’
‘She’s pawing the ground. I think that she’s due.’
Away from the flock, paced around the ewe ,
Dad said, ‘Keep watching - when it’s time she’ll lay down.’
It may have been minutes but it seemed to take longer, The ewe lay on her side as her bleating
Dad pulled the lamb, just at the right time, As he eased out his hand it was with slime. Jack helped and tickled its nose with straw, The lamb spluttered and gulped. It breathed, greedy for more.

“I know what to do.”
“Remember, I’m a farmer, just like you!”
‘I’ll check that new lamb,’ Jack said, later that day, The barn was alive with sheep chomping hay.
Then the skies grew dark with pelting rain, And Jack heard the lamb bleating – an unhappy refrain. There in the pen, a sad cry and cough,
The lamb was stuck in the water trough.
The new born was cold and began to shake, Its little limp eyes were hardly awake. The lamb wrapped in his coat, Jack set off on his mission, The warmth of the kitchen and some milk his commission. As the rain fell, Jack grew wetter and wetter.
How lucky, he thought,
to have such lambing weather!
Mum had been feeding Jack’s new baby brother, When she was called to the porch to look after another,
‘Mum!’ he cried, ‘this lamb is soaked to the skin!’ ‘It needs milk and some warmth. Can I fetch him in?’ ‘Well done, Jack,’ Mum said, ‘You knew just what to do, That’s a little life saved, and it’s all thanks to you.’
Jack went back to help Dad, even though it was raining, Time doesn’t stop for a farmer in training.
