Jack could feel the excitement steadily grow, In the week leading up to the local show.

Who would be champion? Who would be the winner? Jack would try hard, but he was just a beginner. He was hopeful and tense and full of ambition, as he bravely confronted his first competition.

Jack listened to Dad,

They practised at home in the weeks before, Training the lamb until Jack felt sure. He fixed on the halter and tugged on the rope, The lamb followed smartly – they were giddy with hope. Dad said,

“Watch the judge and hold the lamb steady!” Jack listened

The competitors lined up, looking their best, The judge studied the lambs and looked rather impressed. Jack held his nerve as the judge walked along,

His hope of a win was lost without doubt.

The winners were lined up from first to last, Jack’s chance of success had long since passed.

‘You can’t win them all!’, thought Jack, with a sigh. There was always next year, another chance to try.

But, Meg was a champion – she saved the day! In the dog show she put on a stylish display. Meg was chosen as the very best pet,

This was a day Jack would never forget. She won a rosette and wore it with pride, Jack couldn’t believe it - he went home with a prize.

It’s sometimes not easy for a farmer in training, But, just this once, Jack was celebrating.

It’s one of the highlights of the year – it’s the local show. Jack can’t wait to put on his white coat and show off his best lamb to the judge and all of the spectators watching.

Jack listened to Dad, who knew just what to do, He thought, ‘I’ll be a farmer, just like you.’
