SELMA COMMUNITY MAGAZINE - MARCH/APRIL 2019

Hello

Remembering

Ken Harris

Buying or Selling? We’ll get it done for you!

The City of Selma is beyond saddened to announce the passing of Councilman Kenneth Harris on December 20, 2018, at the age of 64. Councilman Harris was an excellent Councilman, a great family man, and especially, a good friend. His dedication to his community was surpassed only by his devotion to his faith, and eternal love for his family. We wish to extend our deepest sympathy to the Harris Family upon the passing of Councilman Harris, which has caused a deep void of sadness in our community. Councilman Harris was the longest consecutively serving member on the City Council, having been elected to the first of ten consecutive terms in May 2000. However, his public service did not start in 2000. Councilman Harris served as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and Firefighter for the Selma Volunteer Fire Department from 1991 to 2000 and as a member of the Selma Planning & Zoning Commission from 1999 to 2000. Most importantly, Councilman Harris demonstrated in countless ways his dedication to the best interests of the community and his family, earning the respect and affection of people from all walks of life. We grieve for the loss of Councilman Harris, but our feelings are secondary to the fact that Selma has lost a staunch advocate for safety, economic opportunity, and community quality of life. Councilman Harris’ dedication and long-standing commitment to making Selma a better place for not just his family, but all families, is evident in his selfless service. We are forever grateful for the time we were granted with Councilman Ken Harris, both on a professional and personal level. He will be greatly missed by the entire Selma community. A New Tradition - Selma’s historic Harrison House was the location of the annual Morris family Christmas gathering. On December 22, 2018 Amy and Michael Stevens sponsored the Morris family gathering for the second year and are already looking forward to a third event for Christmas 2019. Amy and Michael are residents of the Forest Creek neighborhood. More than 40 family members came out for the event to enjoy beautiful weather, food and family fellowship. When asked why they picked “The Harrison” for the second year in a row, Amy didn’t hesitate, “It’s never too late to start a new family tradition. As cousins began to get married and start their own families, and great-grandchildren became a norm, we realized the regular ol’ dining room just wasn’t going to cut it anymore. After a post-Thanksgiving meal stroll one year, we happened upon the Harrison House. Light Bulb. For our next big family gathering, why don’t we see if we can rent this place? This led to our first family Christmas at the Harrison House in 2017. We no longer had to fear how to strategically place tables in nooks and crannies of a

family member’s house so that everyone had a place to eat, nor be afraid of over inviting extended family members as our family grew. When Christmas 2018 was approaching, the Harrison House seemed like a no brainer. Our group grew even more this year, with inlaws upon in-laws upon in-laws. No one had to worry about leaving at a certain time or rearranging celebration days to see another side of the family. We were all in one place. As it should be.” We look forward to having the Morris family back for Christmas 2019.

Easter Egg Hunt The City of Selma Historical & Parks Commission is hosting an Easter Egg Hunt at the Stage Stop Park on Saturday, April 13th at 11:00am. There will be two separate “hunts”. NOTE: The Stage Stop Park playground will be closed at 9:00 on April 13th in preparation for the event. Volunteers and donations (plastic eggs, candy, and prizes) are welcomed. ANNOUNCEMENTS SEASONAL WATER RATES

Seasonal Water Rates in Effect Starting in May – Just a reminder that every year from May through September, summer water usage rates go into effect. The average residential water consumer can expect a slight increase in their water utility bill during this time. We thank you for your support in prudent water conservation measures during this high demand period. SEWER RATE INCREASE

The Cibolo Creek Municipal Authority is raising the sewer rates by 7%, or $0.25 per 1,000 gallons of water usage. This will equate to approximately a $1.28 increase per month to the average wastewater user. The increase will be reflected on your upcoming utility bills. REVERSE 9-1-1 SYSTEM

As you may know, the City of Selma uses a reverse 9-1-1 system to keep our residents and businesses informed in cases of emergency or upcoming events. This tool is very useful in relaying information to everyone in Selma, as was the case during recent water outages caused by telecommunications contractors damaging water lines in Selma neighborhoods. Please be sure to inform the City of Selma if you have changed your phone number or if you intend to do so in the future. The Reverse 9-1-1 System is a great tool for the citizens of Selma, but can only benefit you if the City has your updated contact information. WATER RESTRICTIONS

Selma is currently not under any water restrictions. We ask that all residents continue in to be wise in your water use and conserve where you can. Best management practices for conserving water include prohibiting watering lawns and other landscaping between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 8 p.m. unless such watering is by hand-held bucket, hand-held hose, or a properly installed drip-irrigation system. Water runoff from property is also prohibited. CHIPPER SERVICE

The Titan of Selma Many of us complain about the most minor, basic inconveniences, whether it be an illness, traffic, or issues at work. But when you think about it, how many of us can honestly say that we have experienced an event so life-changing, that it would completely alter our goals or life trajectory. Well, that is exactly what happened to Sgt. David Reid in 2010. As part of the elite 75th Ranger battalion, Sgt. Reid served three tours of duty: one in Iraq and two in Afghanistan. On his final deployment in 2010, Sgt. Reid was severely injured while clearing an enemy compound after stepping through a booby-trapped doorway, losing the lower part of his leg from an IED blast. Overcoming ten surgeries and extensive therapy is an inspiration in and of itself. However, Sgt. Reid used this life-changing event to make an even more indelible mark on those around him. Determined not to let his injury define him, Sgt. Reid decided to use his injury to help other service members overcome their struggles and inspire hope and determination in everyone he meets. He has become an active bodybuilder and motivational speaker. Currently, Sgt. Reid serves as the executive director of the Robert Irvine Foundation, whose goal is to support veterans, active service members and their families. For his efforts, Sgt. Reid was rewarded with a mortgage-free home from Pulte Homes and Operation Finally Home right here in Selma. Despite receiving his new home, Sgt. Reid did rest on his laurels. Instead, he continued to work tirelessly to help his fellow service members and provide support for those in need. In January, it was announced that Sgt. Reid was one of 64 individuals from across the nation to be selected as part of NBC’s “The Titan Games”. According to NBC, “The Titan Games will offer everyday people the oncein-a-lifetime opportunity to compete in epic head-to-head challenges designed to test the mind, body and heart”. The show, hosted by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, puts contestants in one on one challenges that will test every facet of human endurance. Sgt. Reid was one of thousands who answered the call to be a contestant on the show. Sgt. Reid knew that his story may set him apart from others. However, he knew that he could use this platform, and his story, to show everyone that despite your limitations, you can achieve greatness if you set your mind to it. The City of Selma is extremely proud of Sgt. Reid, not just for his involvement in a hit television show, but for his continuing efforts to help his fellow service members and their families. His willingness to share his personal story in an effort to help those around him is the epitome of what it means to be a Titan. We are forever grateful for his service, both in and out of uniform. We are proud to call Sgt. David Reid our very own “Titan of Selma”.
